[X] [Crash] Jade Crock
[X] [Terms] LexCorp will provide Paula and Artemis Crock with safe travel to Vlatava where they will be able to live and escape pursuit in exchange for working for Count Vertigo
And now the update is here. I'm not the happiest with all of the sections here but I have to let go. I am very proud of how I worked in the original Superman movie tagline into a section and I rather like a few other elements in this update. I will say that I think certain sections did get a bit weaker as time went on and a lot of stuff got scrapped and rewritten. I'm content with what I've got and I think it should be fairly solid all things considered.
I'm actually rather looking forward to some of the stuff coming up soon. We're going to get a few more character introductions soon and it'll be interesting to see how people react to that especially the Bruce Wayne POV that I was working on but ultimately decided to cut. It's not all in this interlude but I managed to knock out a solid amount of stuff and soon I'll be able to start wrapping things up and moving on to a little more set-up for what's to come.
I've rambled on for long enough and I hope you guys end up enjoying what I've got for you this time around.
Interlude: Bigger Than What You See
Talia al Ghul
Life was always a gamble. In order to get ahead you had to take risks to remain on top of things and change the course of destiny. Remaining passive would allow one to survive and maintain the status quo but if you wanted to do more than that risks were necessary. That's not to say Talia was reckless, rather she merely understood that in order to earn her place in the world she couldn't rely fully on others. Everyone with enough power, from her father to Lex Luthor, would actively work behind her back and ensure that she could not stand as an equal. And why would they? A subordinate was most useful when they were a subordinate, as an equal they would always place their agenda over your own.
Talia was not disloyal. She had now reason to betray her father and she intended to continue to work with Lex Luthor. That didn't mean she was willing to sit passively by and allow them to control the fate of her own destiny. Instead when the opportunity to help herself presented itself, and she was certain it wouldn't hurt the person she was working with, Talia would advance her own agenda.
Paula Crock was such an opportunity. While LexCorp seemed to be interested in getting the daughter into their custody, Talia quickly determined that it wasn't likely to be the case. Paula would die before letting the child leave her care. Any attempts at negotiating that failed would then be a security risk for LexCorp and herself going forward as when someone else came for them as Paula could use the information of what LexCorp had tried to negotiate with her. Talia could have attempted to silence Paula by killing her and taking the daughter, but the daughter would likely resent Talia and whoever she placed her with, meaning she'd need to kill both of them if the negotiation failed. And LexCorp's terms were going to fail.
It seemed wasteful to have to kill a potentially talented operative and a relatively moldable child to prevent a sword of Damocles from hanging over herself and LexCorp so Talia took the opportunity and decided to build her own powerbase. She deliberately moved to cut her own deal with the Crocks and ensured that she had a new agent immediately and one later on down the line and there was no threat to LexCorp informational security that would need cleaning up later. Some might consider what she did treachery but Talia was merely going behind someone's back to advance everyone's interests including her own. She could have spoken to Lex Luthor about her plan and not gone behind his back but intelligent men rarely enjoyed being told their read on things was wrong and it was both simpler and faster to ensure success in her own manner rather than to chance an argument and a debate and let some other organization close in on them.
Lex Luthor could grow angry at her later on down the line if he discovered this, but Talia doubted he'd jeopardize their alliance over it. And besides if he was so concerned about an ally showing initiative and acting without his knowledge then they likely wouldn't be capable of remaining in an alliance for very long.
Talia did rather appreciate that Lex seemed to trust her. The fact that he more or less gave her free reign to arrange this negotiation on his behalf was rather promising. Trust was a precious currency and Talia very much appreciated it being extended to her in such a manner that gave her carte blanche to act. Talia wasn't going to use this single experience to assume that Lex wasn't conducting his own actions behind her back, but the degree of latitude in completing her goals without any real oversight was nice. Talia was all too used to her father peering over and checking her work, having various servants keep an eye on her to ensure that she was following his instructions to the letter. He'd begun to bend as of late but it was rather pleasant to be given trust right out of the get-go. Talia would be keeping an eye on Lex Luthor but his ability to trust her to have his best interests at heart, even if she was pursuing her own agenda was a rather promising sign of things.
For now though Talia would be concentrating on ensuring that Paula and Artemis made it to Vlatava in one piece and without detection. Talia was confident that Paula would prove loyal enough when the time came and now she had her own agent within Vlatava. The Count was worth keeping an eye on even if her father mostly considered him beneath notice.
Talia made sure to arrange things properly for the Crocks to take a ship and then a plane to Vlatava, primarily using her own resources, both so as to not implicate LexCorp for being involved, and to not spend someone else's resources on what would be her agents, and to add an easy layer of obfuscation. Talia was quite confident that for now at least everything was going her way. She still needed to be careful and if she calculated the risks wrong she was as good as dead, but Talia intended to be the captain of her own fate and so far this latest move seemed to be paying off.
Jade Crock
Jade was apparently moving up in the world. God fucking knows if she was ready to deal with the consequences but she didn't mind it all that much. It didn't seem like she was being set up to crash and burn and she didn't mind running the new races in Alexandria. Sure her expertise was in assassinations but this at least seemed like something she could manage. At the very least so long as she kept it from being an embarrassment Jade was confident LexCorp would forgive a few growing pains. At least she hoped that was the case.
As the new person in charge of these races Jade decided to rebrand them. "Crash Alley races" sounded like an accident would happen every race. Sure it would get speed enthusiasts invested but the more wealthy clientele wanting to mingle with the underbelly or criminals with pretensions of class would likely avoid it. Jade would instead rebranded it to the much tamer sounding "Wonderland Races". Jade fully intended to keep the criminal element and some of the thrill of seeing illegally modified vehicles race against one another but she knew she'd need to at least keep it palatable enough to people at large and make it a grey operation rather than a black one. The goal was to keep the races legal enough that law enforcement couldn't come down on them.
In addition to the races, the first thing Jade did was install a classy bar and lounge that could easily view the races. From there she could use covert listening devices to pick up conversations and compile information. In addition to that acting as neutral ground for criminal elements in which they could trade and negotiate would provide both safety and a clientele willing to pay more for their services. Jade didn't know enough about business to be certain of anything but she was fairly certain that no matter what she did, the races would be operating in the red for a bit. As such Jade would need to justify the expense to LexCorp.
Jade didn't know races but she did know criminals and information gathering. By being able to provide LexCorp with a solid connection to the criminal underworld and providing them with information, she could justify operating in the red a little bit by providing non-monetary value to the company before she figured out how to make everything profitable and word of mouth generated greater attendance at the races.
In addition to reinventing the venue, Jade would reinvent herself. She wasn't especially fond of being associated with her father and an air of mystery to the person running the Wonderland Races would give it a distinct touch. In addition she could use the persona to hide her age and identity, making people more likely to treat her based off of what they could perceive.
Jade had always liked the story of Alice in Wonderland and so she decided to become "Cheshire" as her new persona. She did need to buy a new suit, the one she'd worn for her father's trial wasn't distinctive enough and wasn't all that great for fighting. Instead commissioning a bullet proof green and black number from LexCorp would do the trick. In addition Jade used her money to purchase a mask in the shape of a grinning cat. From there installing a basic voice changer and a filter for poison gas was easy enough. The last element to complete the ensemble were faux nails, colored green and laced with poison to provide her with an easy way to debilitate a foe without anyone noticing. If a serious fight broke out, Jade would use a knife or a gun or a sword but having an option for something subtle was always appreciated.
Jade rather looked forward to being Cheshire. She was still under the LexCorp yoke to some degree and she needed to prove herself useful enough for them to tolerate but for the first time in her life, Jade was able to choose for herself and she was content with that. Jade had no idea if things would work out but if worst came to worst, Cheshire could always disappear.
For now Jade would enjoy the way things had played out for her. Her father was in prison, she'd managed to slander his name by implying he was a steroid abuser puncturing daddy dearest's ego and making him look even more pathetic, and she was able to be placed in charge of an operation maintaining races. Things were looking up for now.
Wade Eiling
There simply wasn't enough time in the day for Wade Eiling to do everything he wanted to do. He had a war to win and between dealing with lily-livered simpering bureaucrats, twiddly Europeans and whatever metahuman menaces the Reds might come up with, Wade was constantly busy. Normally Wade would've been focused on improving the USA's power but with the Chinamen revealing their own super team and Avruskin being a looming anti-Superman threat, Wade found himself needing to work with the various powers of the world instead of just using force to get everyone into line.
Wade Eiling was being run ragged trying to set everything up but he couldn't relent. This was work that needed to get done. Unfortunately it meant that when Lex Luthor called, Wade didn't exactly have enough time to freely converse with him. Lex was a powerful ally for Wade, a man of scientific, economic and technological prowess that Wade could use to bludgeon his opposition into compliance. The man was loyal enough but he wasn't a soldier nor was he under Wade's command. As such, Wade couldn't blow him off or demand a stirep from him. No Wade had to treat his ally respectfully and with care to ensure that he didn't waver. He wasn't going to bend for Luthor but Wade knew enough about politics to know that he ought to avoid being needlessly antagonistic just because it was easier for himself to be comfortable treating everyone like they were soldiers.
Most of the time Lex Luthor was not an issue at all. Wade rather liked the guy and he had good people working under him. It was only now when Wade was utterly and entirely swamped for time that Lex was even remotely problematic. He couldn't ignore Lex or brush him off but he also couldn't devote most of his attention to what Lex Luthor was calling about. Still at the very least Wade figured he ought to try.
Picking up the video conference out in England was a bit annoying with the time delay but he managed to sneak it into a time that worked out. Lex Luthor himself seemed to be appreciative of the time he did get so Wade at least considered that a success.
"Thank you for your time Mr. Eiling" Lex Luthor began "I'm aware that we don't have much time so I'll keep things as brief as possible"
Good, Wade appreciated that they were getting to the point. It was his third day in this ridiculous conference and if Wade had to listen to one more cheese eating surrender monkey waffling about escalation, he was going to have an aneurism or something.
"I wanted to see if there is any chance you can remove and take into custody a few high profile prisoners. Both Metallo and the man behind the Atomic Skull who rampaged through Metropolis, Albert Michaels, are currently detained. While I am confident that Metallo can be detained as he's just a head and Albert Michaels has no powers, Lois Lane has begun snooping around and I wish to potentially avoid ending up in another Volcana situation if we do decide to make use of these two's talent" Lex calmly stated. "I'd appreciate it if you could handle holding them for a bit."
Wade contemplated this. He wasn't fully aware of the Atomic Skull situation besides it being a rampaging monster. If there was a guy who could make that sort of power on demand, Wade wanted that mind working for the US. Metallo was less useful but Wade could probably find someone who had a use for him. Wade made up his mind as he decided on just the person for the job.
"I'll put Waller on it" Wade answered "She's been looking into giving us an additional mass produced metahuman edge to compete on the world stage. I'll have her pick up Dr. Michaels and Metallo since she'll likely have interest in them."
Lex Luthor looked slightly displeased by this but he still schooled his expression well enough.
"Are you certain that Waller's the best choice for this?" Lex Luthor questioned placidly "She's had a history of being unnecessarily hostile towards LexCorp's endeavors and I'd rather not direct any more of her ire towards me"
Wade frowned. Issues between the two of them would be problematic but he didn't have a safer option to handle this in a timely and efficient manner.
"Waller's a bulldog" Wade responded "But she knows how to keep a secret and she'll follow orders coming from the people in charge. I don't have a better candidate for pick up unless you're willing to wait for a while. I don't trust General Hardcastle or General Lane not to let something slip at the wrong moment so they're off the table and no one else would be as efficient as Waller is"
Lex formulated his answer before shifting to the next topic of conversation. Namely, Lex Luthor was interested in having Wade hire Carla Draper to work for him. Lex was concerned that someone might attempt to use Carla as a wedge to dislodge one of the key security personnel working for him, Carla's father Carl Draper. Carle wouldn't accept a job from LexCorp but she ought to be willing to work for the US government and skilled enough to make it worthwhile.
Wade could agree to this deal easily enough. Admittedly he wanted to put Carla in with Waller but considering the apparent bad blood between Waller and Luthor it probably wouldn't be ideal. That being said he couldn't freeze Waller out of the loop either and give her nothing. As such Eiling made it clear that he could hire Carla Draper but unless LexCorp was willing to turn over something of value to Waller, he couldn't deny her everything she was asking for that he'd be getting from LexCorp without inviting potential hostility and betrayal. Lex Luthor understood and in the end they managed to strike a deal.
Lex Luthor
You were appreciative of how quickly you'd managed to arrange a meeting with Queen Bee. The flight into Bialya and the prepping of the room you'd be meeting in occurred relatively smoothly and Queen Bee arrived at the LexCorp building in Alegab fairly quickly. Now it was time to getto business.
Queen Bee herself looked a touch nervous. You doubted most people would pick up on it but it was there. Her appearance remained immaculate but where before Queen Bee would move languidly and confidently, projecting that she remained in total control of everything, now there was a slight swiftness to all of her actions, a tell that Queen Bee wanted to act and that something convinced her that speed was of the essence. She wasn't quite unsteady but it was enough to show that she was discomfited.
As soon as the pleasantries were knocked out of the way, Queen Bee began to discuss two burning issues she felt you ought to be informed of. The first was relatively simple even if it was problematic. Queen Bee had been looking into Kobra's movements and she'd discovered that the terrorist organization was abducting as many individuals as they could in order to attempt to create as many metahumans as possible to serve as soldiers for them. In addition she'd discovered that the vast majority of the organization seemed to be operating in and around India and moving outwards from there to other countries in Asia and the Middle East. She wasn't quite sure what was going on with Kobra but she figured this ought to be brought to your attention as the organization was a lot larger than initially presented, and their attempts to build up a metahuman army hinted that they were looking to do something even more dangerous later on down the line.
Surprisingly enough, in a few key ways, that was the simpler of the two issues that Queen Bee had informed you of. The more complicated beast to deal with is what Queen Bee had discovered about HIVE, while Queen Bee had been able to hide her own theft of HIVE assets, including a few key metahumans, she had not been the only one to do so. Notably both some cult in Europe and Kobra had both managed to pick up a few resources and cells of the criminal organization and Queen Bee was confident that while Amanda Waller had shattered the organization, remnants of the group were still active and operating independently of one another. The most concerning thing that Queen Bee had discovered was that there were strong signs that HIVE had some kind of connection to the American government.
Whilst the government at large was almost certainly unaware of things, a key figure in HIVE who had previously provided funding and information to the group had shaped the organization into a tool for subterfuge. Key secrets from the DEO, the predecessor organization to the DOMA and ARGUS, had been given to HIVE and the organization was using the work of Dr. Benjamin Love and Amos Fortune to produce metahumans. While you were unaware of the reputation of Dr. Benjamin Love, Amos Fortune was the man who had created the Royal Flush. HIVE was using that information to create metahumans and in exchange for the funding, the metahumans they produced would be used to destabilize nations hostile to the US government and provide a justification for greater security from the USA while acting deniably as independent supervillains.
While you found the espionage game needlessly convoluted, as there were likely easier ways to create deniable assets and to provide justification for harsher security measures, whoever was behind this was competent enough to cover their tracks and play the game well. Whilst Queen Bee had become aware of the fact that HIVE had access to the work of Dr. Benjamin Love and Amos Fortune, she had been utterly unable to find any files containing concrete information on their work, only being able to confirm that it had been used via oblique references in secondary files. Queen Bee considered this unknown player to be a potential danger, especially since they still seemed to both be at large and to have completely fooled Amanda Waller. Queen Bee wanted to notify you in person as soon as possible, as while she was confident she hadn't been discovered and she hadn't left any evidence, the person behind all of this had outsmarted her once so it was best to ensure that LexCorp could take steps to ensure nothing unsavory got out.
It was an irritating dilemma and one that would need to be dealt with, but you were glad that at least Queen Bee had done her level best to reach out to you immediately as soon as she even considered that there might be a problem that would affect you. Now all that was left was to take the appropriate steps to prevent further problems from forming later on down the line.
Leslie Willis
It was almost funny how easy it was to get into S.T.A.R. Labs. Maybe Leslie was a little too used to the LexCorp standard but what they did have in place felt rather piddly overall. True most people couldn't switch up their looks like Leslie did but still people should have been way more careful about this kind of stuff. For a bunch of eggheads they sure seemed to be stuck in the past unable to keep up with the fact that they were now living in world in which either you'll believe a man can fly or you're a crazy person.
In a lot of ways Leslie found it kind of hilarious how nobody questioned who "Dr. Sophia Sage" was. She didn't have a working keycard but a little social lubricant and confidence and she got enough people opening the doors to get her into the building and into their systems. Honestly with how easy this all seemed to be Leslie felt that she should be checking if there were any fires in Bavaria with how smoothly this had all gone.
And so Leslie got to work. She made her way to a few different labs and checked on some different systems. There was phasing tech, improved material sciences, some egghead working on an improved power generator that sounded positively delectable and more. But what really drew Leslie's attention was the work of one Emil Hamilton. He was working with with the big blue boyscout himself. That was a problem. Superjerk would try to silence Leslie and as such Leslie couldn't trust him. The fact that stealing this information would also count as sabotage for LexCorp and help them help her was merely icing on the cake.
And so Leslie slowly but surely worked towards her goal. She called Hamilton on a burner phone and pretended to be someone else, masking her voice with shapeshifting while hiding in the bathroom. Then once she'd gotten confirmation that Emil Hamilton to go on a wild goose chase, Leslie promptly walked up to the lab and used her powers to override the door locks and force them open. Now it was time for Livewire to play.
Opening up Dr. Hamilton's computer wasn't all that difficult and once she'd transferred all of the data to an appropriate drive she promptly deleted all of the data and then wrecked his computer via overheating it. Superman's medical records were interesting, though someone smarter could figure out what they might want to do with the data regarding how various villains had injured him, or the effects of kryptonite on him that Dr. Hamilton had discovered, or even Superman's dental records. Leslie knew her limits and she sure as hell wasn't going to get much out of a xenobiology report. The thing Livewire could get info out of was the specs for Superman's new custom suits. Apparently Dr. Hamilton had built three suits for Superjerk, a spacefaring suit, an underwater suit and a radiation suit. Knowing what he had at his disposal would enable LexCorp to effectively develop counters. Heck Leslie could already thing of ways to sabotage and counter them from what she'd gotten.
The next step was to steal physical evidence. Livewire stole all of Emil Hamilton's physical files on the alien in blue that were present in the room, and put them all into a single folder. From there she went and acquired a vial of Superman's blood. The storage container for them was biometrically locked but Livewire could brute force it open with her electrical powers. Leslie figured it was fine to merely take the one vial instead of multiple and hopefully hide that aspect of the sabotage.
Lastly was dealing with the big man in the sky's suits. Leslie initially wanted to steal them but she quickly realized that there was no way she wouldn't get caught trying to take one of these massive suits outside. As such Leslie settled on a little slightly more subtle sabotage. Frying the circuitry of the space and underwater suits wasn't much sabotage but it was hopefully not likely to be noticed until Superman needed to call on a critical function. She could have gone for something flashier but she figured that subtlety would be better for now as Hamilton and Superjerk might not catch the suit sabotage while preoccupied with all the other damage she had done.
Livewire then morphed back into her Sophia Sage disguise and walked out the door with a vial of Stuperman's blood and extensive notes on his biology and the blueprints to all of the suits Emil Hamilton had made for him, as well as various design notes and scrapped iterations and ideations. The funny thing was that if S.T.A.R. Labs had just installed cameras to spy on Dr. Hamilton, Leslie's work would've been much much harder. Still she couldn't complain too much, they made all of the work so much easier for her.
Emil Hamilton
Emil was not prepared for what happened to his lab. It had been a normal day like any other, or perhaps more accurately, as normal as any day in which you were sharing a city with a powerful benevolent alien, an advanced homicidal cyborg, a body-swapping mad scientist in an albino gorilla body and more could be. Nothing had signified that his lab would get ruined.
If this were an attempt at sabotage, Emil would've at least felt a small sense of vindication, it would've been tangible proof that his efforts to help Superman were yielding results and that others were taking notice. Emil didn't need the validation of others but it still might be nice to get some recognition for the work he put in behind the scenes. Emil had already begun putting in work developing counters to Parasite's touch, Commander's mind control devices, Ultra-Humanite's body swapping technology and the caustic touch of whatever the creature that had managed to burn Superman during Brainiac's invasion. He could conceivably see one of them or some other criminal being frustrated with his efforts and seeking to stymie it through sabotage.
Instead this appeared to be a freak power surge that had destroyed most of his equipment. One of his colleagues must have inadvertently produced more power then expected in the experimental fuel lab and the ensuing spike had ended up doing a surprising amount of damage to his lab. His computer, with all of its records on Superman's biology and the various notes on the limits of his powers, was completely fried. The cooling unit in which he kept a few blood samples from Superman had been wrecked and the samples were ruined. The electronic locks to his lab were completely fried and now the doors hung ajar. This meant everything needed fixing and fast.
Emil didn't know how he was going to explain this to Superman. The kryptonian had placed a good amount of trust in Emil by providing biological samples and working closely with him. Emil now had to explain that a lot of things were damaged or gone due to negligence on the part of himself and his coworkers. At least the various suits he designed to help Superman in more extreme environments and situations seemed to be intact.
For now Emil was going to concentrate on getting back to where he once was and once more logging all of his information to ensure that the damage from this incident was as minimized as possible.

HIVE Protection subvote
Queen Bee's discoveries about the nature of HIVE are disconcerting. You've long had suspicions and hints that there was more to meet the eye when it came to that organizations ties to the US government but now beyond a shadow of a doubt, Queen Bee has confirmed that some unknown player with access to confidential information from a now defunct secret organization in the US government was involved in their creation and helped shape them. Queen Bee is especially concerned about what next steps should be taken as while she's confident in what she has done, she's uncertain of how to approach this since there's always a chance that this unknown individual has done more that's gone unnoticed and she prefers to proceed with caution rather than assuming the best when a previously unknown factor is revealed. The plan you take on how to proceed with things from here will shape what you can do to combat HIVE as best as possible. Please pick your favorite option from the list below.
