Since we still don't have a follow-up to the Reignited Trilogy, I was wondering how SV would do it?
Obviously, this would be in the style of the Original Trilogy, with anything from Legend let alone Skylanders best kept to quick shout-outs.
Insomniac reportedly wanted to move on from Spyro due to how him being a quadruped meant he couldn't grab things (other than in his mouth), limiting how much they could do with him. This is probably the first thing we should address, and I have two solutions:
I had the idea to set this hypothetical game inside Spyro's own mind. With there being a whole dragon clan in the first game based around dreams, there is precedent for such an idea in the series. I wanted to limit it to Spyro's mind to keep him the focus of the game's story (to counteract Year of the Dragon) and to contrast with Psychonauts where you mostly go into others' minds until the end of the game anyway.
As for why we're in Spyro's mind, I'll keep it simple for now. Say a mysterious curse has given Spyro amnesia, which going inside his own mind can help fix. I like this idea as it could help newcomers relate to Spyro more.
Then again, a problem with setting the game inside Spyro's mind is it'd make it hard to introduce new characters, ones who aren't just figments of Spyro's imagination anyway. Hence why I'm still open to other story pitches besides this one.
So, how would you make the next Spyro the Dragon game?

- Give Spyro a new 'Vacuum Breath' that lets him suck up and hold things he otherwise couldn't carry, and/or
- Have multiple playable characters that, unlike Spyro 3, you could switch between whenever you wanted (though with a much smaller roster than Skylanders, about five total). This should probably come with some sort of limiter though, so I'd propose you use up 'spirit particles' with each switch. This lets the bipedal characters handle what Spyro can't.
