BTW does anyone know if using a side charater in the main missions improve one's stat or only medals does that function

Only medals improve your side character's statistics. One medal may be earned per character by doing enough main missions with that character (I think it's 3 missions if you A-S rank them).

The *same* medal can be earned through combat deployment, if they go out enough.

There are two other medals you can earn:
1) A medal for being rescued (characters who are "unlucky dogs," "wandering mother base soldiers" or "skull-unit puppets" on side-ops missions who are successfully extracted)
2) Defending a FOB invasion

You can only earn each of the three medals one time. Gaining a medal does not guarantee gaining a letter rank. They simply give a chunk of morale points that can cause a rise in rank based on invisible numbers you're not allowed to see for some reason.

So do they basically just raise their stats so it has a positive effect on your unit levels? I can't really think of any other benefit unless I missed something.

Correct.

There's very little incentive to go out of your way for it. The bonuses are quite small, especially as you get late into the game and the difference between S and S+ and S++ gets more geometric, and just finding people with S-ranks is a lot easier than grinding up a single commando.

Mostly I did it because Flying Buffalo had a flirty ponytail, and I loved watching her kill people before sitting in the ACC having uncontrollable facial ticks while plastered in blood.

QTs are the only soldiers you're justified in grinding up on the basis of how rare they are.

Too bad you'll never have an efficient all gril army like the FROGS.
It's strange how they never explained that in MGS4. I mean, I've got nothing against female soldiers, but even I raised an eyebrow at a personal army made ENTIRELY of women. Like... was Liquid trying to tell us something? o.0

It's Kojima. I think we already know the answer.

Because ONE HUNDRED BILLION DOLLARS IN VIDEO GAME BUDGETS SPLIT UP AND HIDDEN ALL OVER THE WORLD, I HID MINE IN THE FOX ENGINE WHERE YOU'LL NEVER BE ABLE TO GET IT

Well Liquid Ocelot is both Liquid Snake and Revolver Ocelot so he spent a lot of time around Sniper Wolf. I guess he picked up some of her opinions on female soldiers.

Also this is the guy who put Mount Snakemore on his giant undersea battleship.

that last part was all Ocelot, the most insane person in the series, counting Rising, too.
