Legendaries Reborn - A Pokemon AU Quest

Thirty-five years ago, the God-Hunters rose to power. Under the command of the Traitor Champion Philip Frescon, they tore across the regions, slaying Legendaries thought invincible, razing towns to the ground for standing in their way, and wounding Arceus himself in the final battle. Philip was slain in that battle, his followers scattered, but the wounds they left in the world would not heal so easily.

With the loss of so many Legendaries, the world's balance fell apart. Wild Pokemon grew bolder in many places, squeezing humans tighter into their cities. It wasn't until twenty-five years ago that Quan Roche started gathering people to try and properly fix things, to find the Legendaries that had gone into hiding and revive the ones thought lost.

Many trainers answered the call to form the organization known as Quan's Hope, but these days the world remembers three of them the best of all.

Nathaniel, the Storm Shepherd. A mysterious young man who seemed to come from nowhere, burn scars covering the left side of his body, a Carnivine constantly hovering behind him. Yet able to stare down the largest, most intimidating Pokemon without fail-and he never flinched first. He's the tamer of the newly reborn Zapdos and Raikou, Zapdos in particular often being found by his side in older photos. In more recent years he's rarely been seen in public at all, though Zapdos is still seen assisting at times.

Gideon Faust, the Firebird's Child. He has even less patience for ceremony than Nathaniel, despite appearing in public more. He is most well-known for his contribution in saving Ho-oh, who'd been irreparably wounded by the God-Hunters' attack. Somehow, when Ho-oh was wounded even more severely and about to die for good, Gideon was able to twist the boundary between life and death to transform the Legendary into a part-Ghost type, freeing him of the God-Hunters' taint and gaining the Legendary's blessing, and a fraction of his power. These days, he mostly travels on his own, hunting down trouble where it rears its head.

Kimber Folchart, the Ice Maiden. Despite the name and her often blunt demeanor, she's the most forthcoming with information of the Three. She has a strong bond with Kyurem, who seems to have fused with her, one of her arms taking the form of his head. She can access his power in a way that surpasses most of those chosen by Legendaries, and even before she merged with him she had powerful Ice elemental powers in her own right. She's still working closely with Quan's Hope, serving as both an advisor and a powerful fighter.

Still, in these days, they're not as needed anymore. One by one, the Legendaries thought lost have returned, or new ones have risen to take their place. The God-Hunter are gone, after all. You've grown up in a time where their presence no longer needs to be feared, where the wilds are safe to venture into, if not as safe as they were before the Devastation.

Yet tonight, as you slip into dreams, you find yourself floating in a starscape, a voice speaking into your mind.

Hello. I'm sorry to call on you like this, when you're still so young. But time is of the essence, and I cannot wait any longer. There are three Legendaries about to be reborn into this world, and I have chosen you and two others to raise them, to find a place in the world for them. Because the God-Hunters are not truly gone. They have plans, and those plans will endanger the world once more if not stopped. You must travel, to first receive your Trainer's License, and then to find the two others. Together, you can stop this new calamity.

(he/him she/her)

You knew it! You always knew you had a hidden destiny, something more you were meant for! The teasing at school, the way your parents tried to stifle you, the fear of your psychic powers-all of that means nothing, now that you've been chosen. You were already saving up your allowance, to buy some things in secret. Now with proper backing, you're going to leave all this behind, and set out with a new name and look. And you'll even have two other friends to travel alongside, once you actually find them!

-Extremely chuuni
-Will leave immediately, no family support
-No Pokemon to start with, apart from the Egg
-Limited funds and inventory
-Psychic sensitivity – remember your dreams more strongly, ??? It's not what you think

[][Character] Cardamom Bliss

You'll have to leave, huh? You love your family and their bakery, but at times it does feel too cramped. Maybe it'll be good to get out, stretch your legs a little. After all, if you're really one of the only ones who can do this, you'll have to stand up, won't you? And whoever these other two are, hopefully you can work together.

-Your family bakery has branches across all regions, they'll be able to deliver supplies to you wherever one of those branches is
-Start with a strong personal team of three
-Will get plenty of food and healing items to start off with
-Magically trained – you've learned both blessings and curses from your mothers, and will be able to both use them in combat and ward your campsites

[][Character] Natalie Berger

(she/her)

…well. You wonder if these other two know just how dangerous the God-Hunters can be. You might have been born long after the Devastation, but your small shepherding village is surrounded by the wilds, and your grandparents have told you much about the early days, when the village had to work together to push back the more violent wild Pokemon attacks, because your mother had just been born then, and it would be too risky to many of the more fragile people to try and flee. Nowadays, things are more at peace, though that might at least be partly because of your traveling uncle's return and his powerful team. And your family is probably going to worry…but this call should let them know it has to be you.

-Get extra lore information
-Your village gets and sends out deliveries on a somewhat delayed basis, but if you ask for something specific they'll try to get it to you as fast as they can
-Start with a team selected from several options, all of average strength but specially trained
-Get plenty of survival equipment to start off with
-???Perhaps you can gain a blessing too...

You try to speak your acceptance, but find your voice silent.

It's alright. I know you've accepted. Thank you…

When you wake, most of the dream is already fading. But the egg lying next to you in bed lets you know this was no dream.

[][Egg] Pink Egg
The egg is pink, with white patterning on the bottom that resembles a cloud. A brown-and-red spiral pattern runs around it, and when you reach down to feel it the spiral seems to be slightly raised. You can feel a sense of strong emotion and affection from it. Poor child...her brothers haven't even returned yet. Maybe you can help with that.
Resonance: Natalie->Eliza->Cardamom
[][Egg] Green Egg
The egg is a bright green color, with a single red spot. When you reach out to touch it, the spot seems to pulse slightly, as if it's a heart of some sort. You can feel a deep hunger radiating from it. Despite everything, I think he still deserves a second chance. Maybe his hunger can become something better.
Resonance: Cardamom->Natalie->Eliza
[][Egg] Egg Egg
The egg is...an egg. Each time you look at it, it seems to shift slightly, although the main color seem to be a light purple, tan, and black. When you reach out to touch it, you feel something like a static shock. You can feel a sense of deep fear and longing from it. Even at the end, I wanted something better for them. Maybe they can earn a proper place in the pantheon this time.
Resonance: Eliza->Cardamom->Natalie

Hello everyone, and welcome to Legendaries Reborn, a quest based on the old Legendaries Lost PTU game I was a part of! This is of course a heavily AU setting, but I'll do my best to provide explanations of the deviations from canon. In this quest, you'll be taking on the responsibilities of raising a newly reborn Legendary. If you've seen the original version of this in the First Chapter Contest, you might notice it's deviated a lot. I realized I was more interested in writing one of three specific protagonists than a blank slate, so I completely changed the viewpoint character direction. As you might have guessed, all three protagonists and eggs will play a part in the plot, but you'll be following one in particular. The "Resonance" lines under each egg let you know which character is best suited for which egg. In general, though, all combinations can work, although Natalie with her least-resonant egg will be a great challenge.

Setting Information
Quan Roche
Chosen of Arceus
The founder of Quan's Hope, blessed with Arceus' power. While she's getting on in years, she's still just as active in her work. After all, despite everything they've done, there are still many Legendaries who have not yet returned.

Nathaniel Berger
The Storm Shepherd
A mysterious young man who seemed to come from nowhere, burn scars covering the left side of his body, a Carnivine constantly hovering behind him. Yet able to stare down the largest, most intimidating Pokemon without fail-and he never flinched first. He's the tamer of the newly reborn Zapdos and Raikou, Zapdos in particular often being found by his side in older photos. In more recent years he's rarely been seen in public at all, though Zapdos is still seen assisting at times.

Gideon Faust
The Firebird's Child
He has even less patience for ceremony than Nathaniel, despite appearing in public more. He is most well-known for his contribution in saving Ho-oh, who'd been irreparably wounded by the God-Hunters' attack. Somehow, when Ho-oh was wounded even more severely and about to die for good, Gideon was able to twist the boundary between life and death to transform the Legendary into a part-Ghost type, freeing him of the God-Hunters' taint and gaining the Legendary's blessing, and a fraction of his power. These days, he mostly travels on his own, hunting down trouble where it rears its head.

Kimber Folchart
The Ice Maiden
Despite the name and her often blunt demeanor, she's the most forthcoming with information of the Three. She has a strong bond with Kyurem, who seems to have fused with her, one of her arms taking the form of his head. She can access his power in a way that surpasses most of those chosen by Legendaries, and even before she merged with him she had powerful Ice elemental powers in her own right. She's still working closely with Quan's Hope, serving as both an advisor and a powerful fighter.

Reio
An island region, quite minor in all things before the Devastation. After the Devastation, it was one of the few wild areas where Pokemon wouldn't be as aggressive in attacking trainers, and thus quickly became a sanctuary to many. It also became the site of the Trainer Academy, where trainer hopefuls from all over the world came to earn their licenses. Even now, with things having died down, many still come here to get their licenses, although there have started to be accreditation courses in other regions. The guardian Legendary of the island is also named Reio, and takes the form of a young woman made of stone, though in truth she is the combined spirit of all the deceased Pokemon of the island, and the reason why it continued to be peaceful even through the Devastation.

Kalos
Shortly after the Devastation, Kalos was erased from the memories of everyone, as part of a plot by Zygarde to devour and usurp the other Legendaries of the region. While he succeeded in this for the longest time, eventually his downfall came when he started sending corrupted Trainers and Pokemon out into the world to conquer further, which led to him being tracked down and defeated for good by the Three.

Unova
Team Plasma had been defeated years before the Devastation, but in time they started to rise again, this time seemingly kidnapping wild Pokemon in large droves. However, it was eventually revealed that while most believed Ghetsis was back in power, in truth Mewtwo had survived the final battle with major injuries, Mew sacrificing herself in his place. His goal was to reform the organization into one where Pokemon and humans were truly equal, and the supposed kidnapping was closer to a large recruitment drive. These days, while many places have Pokemon and humans working side-by-side, Unova is the region where you're most likely to find Pokemon living and working independently.

In general, this setting is based on the Pokemon Tabletop United system, with all the classes therein, meaning that humans can develop combat skills on par with those of Pokemon, as well as supernatural powers. I will not be using this system in and of itself, and might add additional supernatural abilities or allow for combinations not present by tabletop rules.

Known NPCs
Coriander Bliss
Your mom, the current head of the Bliss family, who's determined to see the family name go down in history. She's quite sweet and friendly to almost everyone, although you can tell when she's putting on a facade in order to soothe customers you know she'd rather curse out. She's the most talented in your family magic, able to sing up blessings and enchanted items with ease.

Kenta Bliss
Your dad, a big dork who you love despite everything. He's the one who does most of the financial number-crunching for the bakery, since he seems to enjoy it the most. While he can be stubborn at times, he always backs up his statements with evidence and is always quick to change his mind if presented with conflicting evidence. As someone who married into the family, he's still got some magical talent, although his natural Aura abilities are much stronger, and he uses those the most.

Viktoria Goslin
Your mother, who is mostly quiet and contemplative, especially around people she doesn't know well. While some might call her gloomy or pessimistic, she's mostly trying to keep everyone grounded when she brings up potential worst-case scenarios. And she's not as much of a worrier as your grandmother is. While she married into the family, she's also got powerful talent, mostly in curses. When she and your mom work together, they can set up powerful disruptive wards.

Luke Goslin
Your big brother, who's officially taken your mother's last name as a sign that he doesn't plan to succeed the Bliss family business. He's quite cheerful most of the time, although he gets a darkness in his eyes when his loved ones are threatened. You think he inherited his sense of humor from Uncle Basil. While he's quite skilled at the family magic, most of the time he prefers to use his animated shadow in combat.

Basil Bliss
Your uncle who lives at the bakery with you. He's a friendly and easily excitable man, with a love for jokes. You've never seen him get mad at anyone, ever. He's okay at the family magic, although from what your mother says he could be much better if he focused on curses more than blessings.

Rowen Bliss
Your other uncle, who lives in Castelia and manages the branch of the Bliss family bakery there. You've visited him on occasion, but he's usually too busy to come visit you guys in return. Still, he's always mentioned having a position open at the Castelia branch if you ever want to experience city life. You're not sure about it, but you appreciate his offer. From what Basil says, he's the least magically-talented of the family.

Marjoram Bliss
Your grandmother, who's always fussing and worrying over everyone in the family. You know she has good reasons for this, and sometimes you enjoy being pampered a bit, but a lot of the time you think she could relax a bit more. She doesn't have much of the talent for magic most of your family does, although she still wears the charm your great-grandma made.

Fennel Bliss (Deceased)
Your great-grandmother. According to what you've overheard, she sacrificed her life casting a ward to protect her family during the God-Hunter attack, making it so that all her family members and their livelihood were spared. You're not sure if she could have lived if others had contributed or not-it's something your mom and grandma argue about, when they think no one's listening.

Chapter 1.1 - Mama, Daddy, Don't You Cry
"Obs?" growls a worried voice from your side. You turn, to see Half-Moon crouched next to your bed, head tilted to the side. While most people would be intimidated by the Obstagoon's resting snarly face, you're close enough to know that she's simply concerned. Tilting your head slightly, you realize just how late it is. With a shriek, you leap out of bed.

"Oh shit! It's way past six! Why didn't you wake me?" you ask.

"Sta-goon! Goon!" she protests, holding up her claws and gesturing. She tried, but she couldn't. Turning her head, she also notices the egg for the first time. Immediately, she lets out a growl, pointing at it with one heavy claw.

"It's okay, Moony!" you cry, placing a hand on the back of her paw. To be fair, you understand why the egg would be worrying. Even now, staring at it, you can't quite pinpoint its exact shape or color. But your dream is flowing back to you now, at least part of it.

"…it's part of a quest I've been given," you say. "I should…probably tell the whole family about it, when I have time."

You wash and dress quickly, grabbing some hairgel to shape your hair into its masc form and layering on some looser clothes. You look in the mirror. Yeah, you look boyish enough, though maybe you'll spend the morning in the back instead of with customers. Most of the locals are knowledgeable enough, but with everything going on you don't want to deal with being misgendered by out-of-towners on top of everything.

As you're about to head downstairs, you take another look at the egg. Will it be okay up here? You know it's fine to keep Pokemon eggs in a specialized hatching spot, but what if this is a special egg of some sort?

[][Egg] Bring the egg with you.
[][Egg] Leave the egg upstairs for now and get it before lunch.

As you head downstairs, Half-Moon right behind you, you can hear the hustle and bustle of the bakery in full operation. Already your mom is at the counter, smiling pleasantly as she packs up the customer's order. You take a quick glance to make sure it's not too crowded out front before slipping into the back.

"Ursa!" Immediately, Shin hops down from the counter where's he helping to mix a glaze and immediately runs up to you. You scoop the Teddiursa into your arms, chuckling as he lets out a series of upset growls.

"Hey there, sorry I didn't wake up properly this morning," you tell him, stroking the crescent shape on his forehead the way he likes. "But I had a really cool dream, and I'll tell you all about it over lunch, okay?"

"Hey, Shin! You can't just leave the bowl like that!" calls your mother. She mutters as she brushes her long black hair behind one ear, already reaching out to take over the stirring. "Edward, dear, can you watch the oven for me?"

The Dusclops fades into view, giving her a quiet thumbs-up before focusing his large red eye exclusively on the oven.

"Sorry, mom," you say, rubbing the back of your head. "I've just…got a big story to share. It kind of has to do with why I'm up so late."

"As long as you're okay, son!" calls your dad. He's in the middle of moving some boxes along with your older brother, Luke. "Share it with us over lunch, okay?"

"That's the plan!" You set Shin back on the counter, patting him on the head. "I've gotta help out too, okay?" you tell him. "So can you keep helping Mom with the stirring?" He crosses his arms, but quickly acquiesces after some fake reluctant mumbling.

"Where do you need me?" you ask.

"Hmm…Half-Moon can help knead the dough. Her siblings are doing their best, but she's got the right figure for it. And can you help with adding the filling?"

"Of course!" you call. Half-Moon walks over to one of the counters where several Linoone are doing their best to push around a piece of dough. She makes a "rolling-up-sleeves" gesture, shooing them out of the way before picking up the dough and slamming it down. Chuckling, you walk over to the station next to hers that already has some dough rolled out, and start brushing on the filling and rolling it up.

The morning passes, and finally in the afternoon you can take a break, putting up the closed sign and heading out into your private backyard. Your family's personal berry bushes are kept here, and several of the larger Pokemon spend their time out here. Speaking of…

"Banana Bread!" you call to the Tropius lying by the picnic table. He's already laid out several of his bananas on the platter in the middle. "Aw, you prepared these for me?"

"Tro…" It's nice to know he was worried for you too. He, Half-Moon, and Shin are pretty much "your" team, even if you don't have a Trainer ID yet and they can't be registered to you.

Your family gets settled around the table. Your mom and mother, your dad, your big brother, your Uncle Basil, and your grandma. You take a deep breath, then pick up your satchel, opening it to reveal…nothing?

Just as you're about to panic and wonder if you dreamed up everything, Half-Moon lets out a "Goon!" and wanders over from under one of your berry trees, holding the egg. She glares down at it, letting out a quieter "Goon…" as if she's warning it to be on its best behavior.

"What kind of egg is that?" asks your mom. She squints, murmuring something under her breath, before letting out an "Ow!" and grabbing her eye.

"Cori!" your dad yells, reaching out to her, his hand already glowing with light blue Aura. She waves him off.

"It's-ow-it's okay. I don't think it actually did any damage. I just…tried to divine something about it, and I don't think it liked that. Or, well, something didn't like it."

Uncle Basil is frowning, tapping at his phone. "Aw, I wanted to send a pic to Rowen," he says. "But it's all messed up and the connection's gone fuzzy."

Your grandma is also frowning, staring at the egg intently. At least she doesn't seem to be trying any divinations.

"Um…so, I think that's a Legendary egg?" you speak up.

"WHAT?"

After you've explained about your dream the best you can, your family is now in the middle of…well, call it a heated discussion. The egg is now sitting on your lap, surprisingly still. You give it a slight pat, and you feel a vague sense of mixed curiosity and appreciation.

"This is so cool! I wish I was chosen!" exclaims Basil.

"Can I come with you?" asks Luke. "You'll probably need a bodyguard out there, and now you're, like, a big VIP, even more important than the Champion, probably."

"Is it really safe out there? Didn't that dream say the God-Hunters aren't really gone? You should stay here where we can defend you and the egg!" exclaims your grandmother.

"Mom…" your mom says, shaking her head. "…you know the Bliss family doesn't do things by halves! If our Cardamom was called for this, we can't just let it pass by."

"There's a reason I didn't let you leave to fight those God-Hunters the first time!" replies your grandmother. "I'm not letting my own grandchild do something just as dangerous!"

You feel a strange twitch from the egg each time the God-Hunters are mentioned. It doesn't feel quite like fear, but there's still a sense of nervousness to it.

"Is it really dangerous, though? Maybe we could even ask Quan's Hope to help!" suggests Basil. The egg twitches again, this time with a sense of…anger?

"But you don't have to leave immediately, do you?" adds your mother. "At least wait until we know more about what this new Legendary is like!"

"That's true, Vicky! We need to prepare a proper meal for it before you go!" agrees your mom, turning away from where she was arguing with your grandmother. It's an old argument, you know, and one that rarely comes up these days. You should have expected today to be one of those.

"What about those other two the dream mentioned?" notes your dad. "Did it tell you where to meet them?"

You shake your head. If it did, you don't remember.

"That's a problem," he notes. "I'd be way more assured if we knew who they were and you could all look out for each other."

"I mean…" you say quietly, "you've got Bliss Bakery branches all over Unova, right? I can always check in with you guys there. Grandma, I know you're worried, but…I want to do this! I know that things used to be bad after the God-Hunters attacked, so if they're doing something else evil I want to stop them!"

"You know, that does sound like a good idea," agrees your mom, looking over at your grandmother. "That should be safe, right Mom?"

Your grandmother sighs. "I suppose," she says. "But before all this, let's have lunch first."

As if on cue, your stomach growls. Oh…right.

After eating, your family returns to their previous discussion. It's eventually pointed out that you'll need a trainer license if you're going to be travelling more-"and who knows, you might meet those other two there" adds your mother-so completing the test for that should be the first thing you do, before you make any other plans.

The next license test will take place at the Aspertia City Gym/Trainers' School, in about three months. It's a good thing your family lives in Driftveil, since that means you can commandeer one of the boats making deliveries to Virbank. Quite a few of the delivery boats are familiar with your family, after all, and even the ones that don't take passengers are willing to make exceptions for the Bliss family. Of course, there's plenty to do before you set out.

Vote by plan for three things to focus on over the three months.

[] Practice your white magic with your mom. Right now you can mostly assist with rituals and know how to activate and refresh existing protective charms. You'll pick up more skills and be better able to cast protective spells independently.
[] Practice your black magic with your mother. Right now you mostly know minor curses, more like inconvenience-causers really. You'll pick up stronger and more immediate curses and be able to add more clauses to your curse activations.
[] Take the egg exploring. It seems to enjoy experiencing new things, even if you're not sure how it senses that. But you do want to bond with it more.
[] Train more with your team. You're going to bring Half-Moon, Banana Bread, and Shin to the license exam. But while all of them have some combat experience, they don't really have combat experience working with you.
[] Research more on Legendaries. As far as you can tell, your egg doesn't match any existing Legendary. Then again, there are lots of rumors and speculation about Legendaries that no one has seen before. Do some deep diving to try and learn more.
[] Practice your cooking. Sure, you're a deft hand at helping out in the bakery, but having to cook on your own is very different. Get some lessons on cooking on a more limited budget and with portable tools.
[] Go camping. Head out onto the local Route and get a better idea of what wilderness survival is like. Of course, you'll have a family member come with you.
-[] Your dad
-[] Your mom
-[] Your mother
-[] Your uncle
-[] Your big brother

Whew, sorry for being so late with the update. I got most of it done in a day and the last bit just did not want to come out. Hopefully the spot it ends on is good enough. I'll be making an Informational post for your family members soon, hopefully.
