Lands of Sand and Magi (First Crusade Fantasy CK2 Quest)

come on guys, why beg when we can explore the greatest city at this time? think of all the shenanigans that we can do!:p

edit: plus we can meet new and interesting people... then kill them!:D

While I disagree with talking to the Vindicator, none of the popular plans don't have that

Sadly, we need to get some financial security before we get to the fun stuff. Once we have a steady supply line, then we start branching out.

Chapter 4.1 Results
Chapter 4.1 Temporary Situation (Results)

[X] Plan Powerofmind:

Intrigue:
(Gaucher-only Actions)
[X] Steal from the rich of Constantinople. The Company of Generous Fellows can get back to work while you are in Constantinople, stealing from the rich and giving to the poor. The Poor here being the Pilgrims. (This action may lead to a chain.)

[Gaucer Intrigue Roll: 17 +7/2 = 20. Near Success]

Gaucer and the Generous Fellows have set off into the City to see what contacts they can make. After a bar fight in one of the more seedier neighborhoods of Constantinople, Gaucer has managed to make a contact, one that happens to be another Frenchman. (Chain continued in Chapter 4.2)

High Stewardship: (Abraham-only Actions)
[X] Learn Greek from Abraham. What it says on your tin. Since you've gotten 1/3 of the way done with Latin, it is possible to begin learning Greek. The higher your learning stat, the quicker your progress may complete.

He rolled a 7. You begin learning Greek under the study of Abraham. Due to you studying Latin under Brother Friedrich, you are accustomed to the rigors of studying a language. They will complete at the same time. [2/3 turns]

Holy Actions: (Hospitalier Order-only Actions)
[X] Learn to Read the Bible. You have learned enough Latin to attempt to read the Bible. This will lock out another one of your actions for one of the Brothers.
He rolled a 28. Brother Thomas teaches you how to read the Bible. Your progress with Latin is going well, but you are struggling with the Bible at this stage. [1/2 turns]

Personal Actions: (PC-only Actions)
[X] Find someone to teach you how to read. There are already some people in your Entourage who can do this. If you pick one of your advisors, the both of you will be locked out of taking actions for two camps worth of time. Its up to you to determine how much you need this. You will gain Learning from this process. This Action is Locked in with Brother Friedrich for two more turns.
He rolled a 33. You progress with Latin under the tutelage of Brother Friedrich. He admires your tenacity and discipline under his teaching. [2/3 turns]

+1 to Relationship with Brother Friedrich.

General Actions: (Can be taken by Anyone)
[X] Beg for alms. ???

[Piety Roll: 13 + 34/2 = 30. Success]
You earn 50 fl.

Correspondence Actions:
(PC-only Actions that may be taken every turn, but are of lower quality result because two of these can be taken every turn outside of the five action cap. Specific requests/additions will increase the quality of their results)
[X] Try to talk to Vindicator Gunther. You have no idea what this guy's deal is. Maybe it's time to find out.

[Diplomacy Roll: 18 + 6/2 + 0(Piety Check: Failure) = 21. Near Success]

You approach Gunther. He is found sitting against a tree by himself. He never seems to take off his armor, nor his helmet. You've never seen him eat, drink, or speak. You begin to wonder if there is even anything underneath the helmet.

"Vindicator?" You ask, hoping to garner his attention. You did. The mountain of a man slowly rose, standing before you, at least a head and a half taller than you.

"I'd like to talk to you, if you don't mind. I'd like to know more about you.", you asked patiently. He responded by slowly removing his helmet. It was a pacing, methodical action. He hadn't probably removed his helmet in a long time. You anticipated anything, from there being no head, to that of a monster, or maybe even a ball of light. Anything was possible at this point.

Alas, it was the head of man. Dirty blonde hair, matted down lightly in sweat due to the helmet. His lips formed a straight line, unflinching. He refused to speak. It was as this point that you got a chance to notice his tabard, that of the Order he belonged to. It was a black sun rising over a faded yellow horizon.

"What Order are you sworn to, Vindicator? I've never seen this tabard before.", you asked again. He simply shook his head once, and pointed to his lips. Being around monks this long, you realized the message he was trying to get across pretty astutely. Gunther had taken a vow of silence.

[Relationship Check: Gunther is more Pious than you, +5 to Relations. *6/10]

Gunther pulls out a piece of paper and a semi-dried quill. He scribbles something in basic for you to read.

The Order of St. Lazarus

You'd never heard of this order before. Gunther put his helmet back on and left you where you stood while you deciphered his script. This was all you'd be able to get out of him for now.

[X] Talk to the Varangian guarding your Wing. Alexios has left a pair of Varangian Guards to watch over your Wing. You are inclined to investigate.

[Diplomacy Roll: 17 + 6/2 + 34/2(Piety Check: Success) = 38. Success]

The Varangians noticed your approach as soon as you started to make your way over to them. They positioned in attention to your approach. These men were here to guard you, or at least this was what they had been told to appear to be doing.

"Hello, my name is Anselme." You say, in the most basic Latin you can think of.

"Dearest, cousin, please. Let us speak in our own language." One of the men said, removing his helmet. He spoke in French, and it was a Norman dialect. "My name is Guy de Hauteville. I've been waiting for you to come to me."

This seemed strange to you, but then it came together. You may not be the smartest when it came to the books, but you did know how to piece two and two together. Alexios wanted your attention, and he specifically put this Norman here to watch you for a reason.

"De Hauteville? My lord." You bowed before him, but he stopped you.

"That may be my family, but I am no lord. Merely a Sebastos in service to the Emperor. I am here to assist you during your stay in Constantinople."

Gained Advisor and Entourage member, Guy de Hauteville.

Chapter 4.2
Chapter 4.2: The Jewels of the City
Event Chain
Gaucher and the fellows wanted to meet up with you at a small clearing inside the city walls one evening, during the week. It was very important, and they didn't want to meet with you in the camp. You thought something had gone wrong. You were half right.

"So, we've got good news and bad news.", Gaucher started, smirking.

"Give it to me straight, Gaucher.", you replied.

"The good news is that we've got a job. Its been a while, and its about time you broke the rust off with your high and mighty routine and got your hands dirty with us again.", He smiled, poking you in your shoulder bushing you back playfully.

"Whats the bad news?" You smirked back, but straight to business.

"We got into a bar fight because the target found out we were eavesdropping. We have to move tonight before they move the goods. They've probably increased the guard, so we'll need you on this one if we want to get it done and get it done right.", He explained.

"Always having fun, aren't you."You shook your head in response. "Who is the target, and what is the take?"

"The Patriarch." Gaucher said plainly.

Your eyes almost bulged out of your head. "The Patriarch? Of Constantinople?!" You shouted back, resulting in Gaucher having to put his hands over your mouth to quiet you down, a huge smile beaming across his face. The Patriarch was basically to the Eastern Church what the Pope was to the Western Church. And Gaucher wanted to rob him.

[X] Join Gaucher and the Generous Fellows in the Job. This choice will most likely result in the highest probability of success. Nothing wrong with taking from a rich, and probably corrupt, religious leader. Besides, they're heretics, right?

or

[X] Do not join Gaucher and the Fellows, but tell them to complete the Job anyways.
Gaucher is pretty smart, and a good thief, but you don't want the stain on your soul of robbing the Patriarch. The Wing still needs the money though, so this isn't hypocritical at all.

or

[X] Tell Gaucher this is not a good idea, and that he shouldn't rob the Patriarch.
This is a bad idea. You've got supplies for the rest of the week, but you'll need to find a source of income fast.

[X] Join Gaucher and the Generous Fellows in the Job.

Fuck it. This is the best of the options available. If we don't take this one, our relationship with Gaucher takes a hit. We just have to make sure we don't get caught, and this one has the best chance of success.

If we let them do it alone, there is a higher chance of failure and if we try to convince them not to then we waste an action and piss off some of them.

I have a feeling even if the bar fight didn't alert them, we would still be stealing from the Patriarch. As this is a chain quest, there is probably some significance to either what we are stealing or the outcome.

Our job as a pilgrim is to make sure this Crusade is successful and secure the Holy Land not mend the Great Schism.

[X] Join Gaucher and the Generous Fellows in the Job.

if the emperor finds out we betrayed his trust we are SOOOO fucked

im talking imminent castration here

[X] Tell Gaucher this is not a good idea, and that he shouldn't rob the Patriarch.

Let's not do something stupid.

...yeah, no clue about what to do here.

[X] Join Gaucher and the Generous Fellows in the Job.

It's in service to the will of God, and they did call for our aid. And we know the emperor wants us to succeed, but supplying men is costly and hard. We're just cutting out some of the middlemen here, while making the eastern church pay its tithe to the real church. So, justification!

I know this is not going to win, but we really shouldn't be stealing from the Christian Church, no matter the branch. Besides, IOTL, relations between the two churches weren't irreparable until the Fourth Crusade. Thus, I doubt it would be in-character to consider them full-on heretics on the same scale as the church would consider the Catharism. In conclusion, to do so would be to steal from God's Church.

...or that could just be in your head and constantinople may very well turn on us and slaughter the crusaders.
They didn't exactly strike me as enthutiastic about us being here, if we start stealing from the Patriarch and get recognized, us one of the leader of the crusade? I can't see it end well.

I'm not going to even try to justify it to anyone outside of our character. It just happens to be an argument for this action still being pious, in that it helps something that was commanded by God, even though it steals from one of His servants. And we'll only be killed if we're caught, so...

I'll let voting go until tomorrow morning, where I'll close, tally, and continue. Hopefully a lot of you will have some spare time tomorrow because its Saturday so we might be able to bang out the whole chain.

God damn this is hard. Normally I'm all for taking risks, but this is practically Bad End level risk... If I knew more about the differences between Orthodox magic and Catholic magic I would have a better idea...

[X] Join Gaucher and the Generous Fellows in the Job.

Let's do it.

Let's do it.

If this quest pans out, you will learn a buttload about Orthodox Magic.

Pragmatism has its place. But come on, stealing would only give a black mark on a holy man

Jesus, this is out of our league man. Even if we succeed, he's gonna be PISSED and the only people around here who're likely to take the blame are the crusaders, being foreign.

Voting is closed. I'll put up the tally here in a sec. This looks like a close one.

6 to 5. That was a really close one. I'll have the next part of the chain up shortly.
