[X] Recruits - Any Irishmen present in the capital and close to it may prove useful, if you could get your hands on them. This is Warsaw after all, the capital and while it may be lacking in style, like venerable Cracow, it still is a good spot to look for foreigners present here for one reason or the other. By having a one time only offer to try and enlist them to your cause, you may jump-start your work on the regiment. You have to remember though, this only gives you a right to recruit. Whether anyone will be willing to fight for you is an entirely different matter. Plus, it's still winter and you have to think about feeding your recruits, clothing them and finding them a place to sleep.

This is something we need to get started on ASAP, we decided to pick Irishmen after all, I don't want to risk falling short on recruiting them. Supplies are much less rare than them.

If the pitch is "the unit of Irishmen", this should be the first objective.

[X] Supplies - Ask for a few wagons of supplies, that may help you get an early advantage. Supplies shall be the universal unit, with which you will arm and feed your men. Food, clothing, weapons, ammunition, they all fall under this category. Given the fact, that in Pomerania you may have a problem finding and buying enough supplies to maintain your unit, this can be a lifesaver.

We should probably prioritize stockpiling supplies before we recruit our lads, considering that they would be effectively useless without their equipment (no opportunities for training), and we would be essentially paying them for sitting around whilst we try to arm them.

Choosing Officers would be more beneficial as they're a much more smaller group and as such don't need the considerable quantities of supplies that common soldiery would need; plus some of these officers may originate from noble households, enabling us to make us of their connections if we form a particularly good relationship with our officer core. However, consider that the GM said that these officers may not hail from Ireland, such cultural divides may create a rift between our frontline fighters and our officer core, which as you can probably tell, may not be necessary good in the long term (this could theatrically resolve itself if the officers and soldiers assimilate each others mannerisms and practices, but they may still choose to remain segregated from one another). Additionally, these officers may subscribe to many different doctrines of warfare, and as such they may overrule Liam's strategic decisions and risk needlessly sending our men into a meatgrinder; with Liam having sufficient experience on the field, he could easily ascend his more strategically-minded recruits to the role of officer if needed. (although there will always be alternative sources for finding officers).

Securing the support of the local gentry may be advantageous politically and financially, as many will have prominent positions within the Pomeranian nobility/clergy and as such may send men, money and/or letters of recommendation our way. However, we should definitely consider that Adrian von der Linde of Gdańsk (our creditor which would own 10,000 złotys to) will probably have alot of friends in the local gentry, which he may use to pressure us with, whether that be threatening to refuse our pleas for aid support unless we immediately prioritize paying back our debt, or undermining our relationship with the court (and by extension the king). As such I wouldn't recommend picking this unless option, or even turning to the gentry unless we're in an emergency situation or we've payed back/absolved our debt.

As for doing nothing, I could maybe see ourselves using our favour with the king to absolve/reduce our debt to Adrian of Gdańsk, but whether the king would be willing (or have the time) to summon Adrian and persuade him to forgive our debt is another problem all together; while we made a good impression thus far, I'm sure the king would be displeased to find out we've already gotten ourselves into debt, and as such that may shake his confidence in our abilities to properly manage our regiment.

January 1633 - The Capitulation Part III
[X] Supplies - Ask for a few wagons of supplies, that may help you get an early advantage. Supplies shall be the universal unit, with which you will arm and feed your men. Food, clothing, weapons, ammunition, they all fall under this category. Given the fact, that in Pomerania you may have a problem finding and buying enough supplies to maintain your unit, this can be a lifesaver.

You gave the King's offer a thought.

On one hand, you needed men and you needed them badly. On the other, you required supplies to arm, clothe and feed them. Everything you could receive would be very useful and you knew it.

Unfortunately, you had to prioritise.

An idea to hold on to the favour for a rainy day popped into your head and left it equally fast. If you were going to put it to good use, it had to be here and now, while the King's impression of you was still fresh and when you could maximise the profits. While recruitment in the capital would be a good opportunity, you still had to feed and clothe your men during winter months on your way to Royal Prussia and who knows, maybe this initial hardship shall persuade some of them to seek better luck elsewhere. Some may even end up in their graves due to the conditions. Officers were an idea too, having someone to help you out with all the tasks from the beginning would be a huge boon. But what if you are assigned someone you don't like? Or some bloody idiot, like an Englishman? That would spell disaster for your enterprise. No, while it would be harder to fire up, you preferred handpicked men you could trust. Local support would be nice, but it's not a priority. With some luck and enough hard work they'll come to you, not the other way around.

This leaves you with the only choice left: supplies. Having some wagons of rations, arms and good clothing is a very persuasive argument for any downtrodden, poor Irishman you could find. While such people were abundant on the Emerald Isle, you hoped they'll find their way to you as well. The only thing that did cross your mind is how you will bring those supplies to Pomerania. You had no men, no servants and no friends with you. Fortunately it's not a problem a few coins can't solve. Hiring some helping hands shouldn't be too difficult.

With your decision made, you answered the King with confidence in your voice:

"With Your Majesty's permission, I would like to receive a few wagons of weapons and supplies for my unit. That would speed up my efforts immensely."

"Oh? Supplies you say? A very smart choice. We shall be kind enough to grant your request, Colonel. Dönhoff, send an order to the city armoury and gather what you can from the depots."

"Yes, Your Majesty."

"You shall find your wagons waiting next to the armoury in a couple of days. Be sure to leave a note with Ossoliński informing Us, where you can be reached."

"Of course, Sire, I'm staying in an inn just outside of town. I thank you for this boon, Your Majesty, I'll make sure to use it well."

"We are certain you will, Colonel. You may keep the wagons once you have settled in, Mr. O'Donnell. We are sure they may prove useful for your unit."

"Thank you, Your Majesty, for your generosity and kindness. I shall not fail your trust in me."

"We look forward to inspecting your unit once it reaches our camp come summer, Colonel. Do not disappoint Us and We shall not disappoint you. The Commonwealth always rewards faithful service, We in particular. Is there anything else you wish to discuss?"

"Only details remain, Your Majesty, but I am sure Treasurer Ossoliński shall manage to fill in the gaps."

"Excellent. You shall meet him here tomorrow and see it done. Now then, We wish you a good day, Colonel and good luck."

You then quickly rose from your seat, bowed with reverence once more and promptly left the room. Outside, you could still see the faces of Mattison and Holk, patiently waiting for their turn. That English prick still looked quite cross, probably because of your little chat earlier. You however, didn't care and left immediately as if escaping from the plague.

[Intelligence roll: 88 – more information gained]

Having returned to the Palace the very next day, you quickly found Jerzy Ossoliński and hammered out the remaining details about your unit. He proved to be much less friendly, that the King. A magnate from a wealthy home, he had little patience for mercenaries. You did however, learn a few interesting things from your talk with him. It seems that because you were speaking with him and not the Great Crown Treasurer, technically your unit shall be taken into service directly by the King himself and not by the Commonwealth. While this may mean little from a practical point of view, since you still had to obey the Hetmans and were subject to their judgment, it also means that you were part of the King's private army, since he is paying you from his own purse. Public and private finances have been separated in 1590 and from that moment on, the King had his own budget to cover expenses as he sees fit, while the state had the public treasury. Being directly in the King's pay may mean, that after the war ends, your unit might survive mass demobilisation and subsequent unemployment.

But that's a talk for another day.

Your Capitulation states, that you shall recruit a unit of dragoons numbering 600 men, with 300 hundred being the bare minimum you are obliged to raise. The regiment will be divided into 5 companies 120 men each under a captain, which shall be divided into 5 corporalships 24 men each under the command of a corporal. Besides the regimental staff, each company will have its own staff as well. Troops shall be Irish, with the regiment aptly named The Gaelic Blacks. You are being named its Colonel and are authorised to recruit and promote men within your unit as you see fit. The regiment shall be formed in Royal Prussia, in the Pomeranian Voivodeship and you may organise it and camp while on crown lands. You cannot do so on private land (at least not without permission) or within land owned by the city of Gdańsk. The regiment may not camp inside royal and private cities like a garrison. If winter quarters are required, villages without a town charter inside crown lands are the places to do so. The document also stipulated pay, regulations and other matters, that are of less importance. What mattered is that you finally had the official permission to form your dream regiment. You did however, notice the unique system of paying your troops, which is based not on per capita rules, but on something called "portions". Basically it means, that a single portion is the pay of a regular soldier, while officers and other higher functions receive a multiple amount of portions. You noticed quickly, that it's quite easy to use and abuse these rules, taking the portions of nonexistent troops.

Ossoliński also provided you with the sum of 5 000 złotys to cover your initial expenses. Since this is the Commonwealth after all, money is hard to come by and your budget will be given to you in installments. While this deal was less, than satisfying, you had no choice, but to accept. After all, they did gave you the supplies you requested free of charge and this amount of money should last you for some time. Having finished your business with the proud magnate, you took your leave.

A few days later, a runner found you during breakfast in the inn you were staying at and informed you, that your wagons have been prepared. Having arrived next to the city armoury, you found three wagons fully loaded with clothing, food, wine and a few bundles of firearms. A quick inspection revealed, that these are old, matchlock arquebuses. Very impractical to use from the saddle to say the least. Nevertheless, you'll have to manage with what you have. With some luck, you shall find a way to arm your men with some proper firelocks in the near future. Ah yes, that guy named Dönhoff was waiting for you along with your wagons. Neatly dressed in expensive Western attire and a large coat. You both exchanged greetings, removing your hats for a brief moment.

"Colonel O'Donnell, how do you do?" said Dönhoff in German.

"I'm fine, thank you for asking, sir. I see my supplies have been prepared."

"Indeed they have, sir. Forgive me, but we weren't properly introduced before. Count Gerhard Dönhoff, at your service."

[Intelligence roll: 83 – more information gained]

You jogged your memory for a moment.

Yes, you recognised that name. The Dönhoffs are an important and powerful family in Pomerania, but this man had some merits of his own. He used to command the garrison of the city of Toruń in 1629 during the Prussian War when, after the Swedish victory at Górzno, your side failed to conquer it. His heroics there won him quite the esteem. Plus, he recruited a few regiments of mercenaries from Saxony for service in said war. One thing's for sure, he was no amateur like most of his kind.

"A pleasure to make your acquaintance, Lord Dönhoff. I have heard much about your exploits in Toruń." you said after a short pause.

"As I have heard about yours at Lutzen, Colonel." he retorted with a smile "But that's all in the past. Right now, we have a bigger problem at hand. Moscow's knocking at our front door at Smoleńsk and a firm respond is needed."

"Yes, of course. As promised, me and my men shall be ready to march by August."

"That I know. Yet, I would also like to know about one other thing. You see, during your meeting with the King you mentioned speaking with that sly fox Oxenstierna."

"I did, but what does this have to do-"

"Everything, my dear Colonel. As you probably know, Swedish garrisons are installed in a number of Prussian towns and their very presence insults our land and honour. A truce is still to last a few more years, yet if your former master intends to remain entangled with the affairs of the Empire, this gives us an opportunity, do you understand me?"

"Lord Dönhoff, I was hired to raise a regiment in the understanding, that it's for service against the Muscovites."

"This has nothing to do with that, O'Donnell! I want to be sure of what you said earlier. Will Oxenstierna fight on in the Empire? Did he say anything else?"

You stood there baffled. This German was beginning to get on your nerves. Did he really think you are some turncoat that readily spills out whatever it is he knows? If he really wanted to know the details, all he had to do was to ask politely.

"Sir," you started carefully "The Chancellor said, during a meeting attended by our senior officers, that despite the King's death, he intends to continue the war and that we should not be discouraged by this unfortunate event. That's all. We weren't exactly close friends, if that's what Your Lordship suggests."

" I see."
Dönhoff responded with a sigh "So you really know nothing. A shame, I must say. I was hoping that someone from the Swedish higher ups might have some interesting information, but I must have miscalculated. Nevertheless, thank you for your time, Colonel. I would be most grateful, if you could keep the details of this meeting private."

"If you insist, sir."

"I do."

"Very well, then."

[Dice roll: 66 - a little something]

"Oh, and here's a little something for your trouble, O'Donnell." Dönhoff handed to you a small wooden box he pulled out from behind his coat "No hard feelings, right? Just a little reminder of your promise. I wish you the best of luck in your new endeavour. Good day, Colonel."

With that, the Count bowed, turned about and left before you could even have a chance to reciprocate. It would seem, that he expected something more form this meeting. You, on the other hand, were glad that it was over. Some things never change, despite a brand new country with brand new possibilities. Damn politics, ugly business. Aristocrats are proud to a fault, thinking everything is theirs by right alone. You will have to remember to keep your mouth shut the next time you meet some big shot politician ruling the country. With a sour mood you took a look at the box in your hands. Nothing too fancy, maybe the size of your palm. After some quick tinkering, your managed to open it and found a beautiful brooch inside. A well made silver frame inlayed with a sapphire gemstone. A prized little piece of jewelry, one you can always put to good use. Or sell it, if you're inclined to do so, when short on coin. It certainly almost rewards the last couple of minutes you had to endure.

Having finally dealt with all the problems of meeting the right (or wrong) people, you could start to think about your trip to Royal Prussia. With 3 wagons worth of supplies, your own personal steed, a chest full of gold and silver and by your lonesome, you certainly made a prime target for any bandit or outlaw, that still roams the highways this time of year. Not to mention the fact, that you'll have to manage to pull through the thick snow covering the land. You can always wait a few weeks, maybe more, for the weather conditions to improve, but that will cost you precious time. On the other hand, you could use this time to browse the local market for some quality goods you could use: either personal or for your unit. This is Warsaw after all. One thing's for sure though: you will needed help in transporting all this stuff.

Fortunately, you had it all planned out beforehand.

+900 ZŁ gained! (personal funds)

+5 000 gained! (first installment of your Budget)
+300 Supplies gained! (universal unit: food, clothing, weapons, ammunition, etc.)
+3 wagons gained! (may transport 100 Supplies per 1 wagon)

+1 Sapphire Brooch gained! (+1 CHA when equipped; personal item)

Where will you get the men needed to escort you and your cargo to Royal Prussia? [pick one; CHA based; a minimum of 2 men required: failure means wasting time in Warsaw; personal funds only]

[X] Hire local nobles – Warsaw and the surrounding countryside are full of poor, landless nobles trying to make a living. You can hire some of them out to escort you to your destination. Most with any wits about them are armed with sabres, firearms, have personal mounts and know how to fight. Unless you're really unlucky and only find some of those unfortunates wearing wooden helmets for protection with rusty old sabres passed down from their grandfathers… at least they are relativity cheap. [10 ZŁ per person hired]

[X] Hire mercenaries – Given the times we live in, Warsaw has quite the population of sellswords, both foreign and domestic. You could tap into this source and hire some professional soldiers for protection on your way to Pomerania. While most of them may find the idea less than ideal, when no jobs are in sight and with good money on the table, they won't be too picky. Most are well armed and well trained, yet very few own any mounts. With a good deal of luck, an Irishman or two may answer the call. [20 per person hired]

[X] Ask the King for an escort – You can always try to go back to the Palace and get yourself some men to escort you to Pomerania. While this idea may seem like a good choice, since you won't have to pay for anything (royal soldiers are paid by the King obviously), it may have other consequences. You ask for help at the very beginning of your work, even though you had a royal favour to spend. Not to mention the fact, that you still need to win an audience… again. [gain escort free of charge courtesy of the King; lowers personal opinion]

[X] Ask Dönhoff for an escort – While you hoped not to meet that German Count any time soon, you may be forced to do so. He does seem to have some things to say regarding the local military and if you manage to locate him and ask nicely, he may just help you. Yet you have this strange feeling, that he will ask for a favour in return. What if that favour has too steep a price to pay? [gain escort free of charge courtesy of Gerhard Dönhoff; will require something in return][+1 RAGE]

Speaking of the German lordling, what should you do with that gift of his? [pick one]

[X] Keep Sapphire Brooch - While its former owner is not a man you would be glad to see again anytime soon, the brooch seems nice enough to keep and use. [+1 CHA while equipped]

[X] Sell Sapphire Brooch - Nah, you don't want anything from that Dönhoff douchebag. Best to sell it and forget about the whole thing. [+50 ZŁ gained]

Will you travel to Royal Prussia right now, despite the weather conditions and danger? [pick one]

[X] Yes, we move out immediately!
– No time to waste, you have to reach Pomerania as soon as possible to start working on your regiment if your are to reach your quota on time! You have to find a place to camp, suitable officers, soldiers, drill your men, get a hold of more supplies… all this takes time! [move out of Warsaw immediately provided an escort of sufficient quantity is present; locks out permanently all other options below]

[X] No, we shall wait! - The roads are full of snow and who knows, maybe brigands as well. Traveling with wagons full of supplies invites danger now more than ever. Worse, something might happen along the way and you will be forced to abandon one or all of them and that could spell disaster. Better to wait out the current weather for a more opportune time to travel. [you shall spend the rest of January in Warsaw]

If having chosen to remain in the capital for the rest of the month, there are a few things you may do in the meantime. [pick two]

[X] Browse the local market - It may be winter, but merchants of various provenance are still very much present. You may use this opportunity to see if they have anything interesting to buy for your own personal use. Who knows, maybe you you can get yourself some new clothes or a shiny new weapon? [STE based; look for various items for personal use; personal funds only]

[X] Buy more Supplies
- You may search the market for Supplies to benefit your future regiment. Even though you have 3 full wagons of them, you can always use more. Do keep in mind though, more supplies means more wagons are needed and thus, more men are required for the escort. [STE based; 5 ZŁ = 1 Supply; 100 Supplies or less need a wagon and a horse +50 ZŁ; every wagon needs at least one man to drive it; Budget funds only]

[X] Recruit Officers - While technically you can't barge into a tavern or town square announcing a recruitment drive with drums playing, it doesn't mean you can't look for qualified help among the locals. You are certain that there are officers or good candidates for them somewhere around here and given the fact, that this is the capital with a whole host of foreign soldiers present, it would be a shame not to take a look. [CHA based; search for officers of random descent]

[X] Recruit Irish Officers - While technically you can't barge into a tavern or town square announcing a recruitment drive with drums playing, it doesn't mean you can't look for qualified help among the locals. You can try and focus your attention towards your own countrymen, hoping that there are some Irishmen with the knack for leadership present. Of course, this will be much harder to achieve. [CHA based; search for officers of Irish descent]

[X] Improve your Skills - You can use this time for some personal improvement. By reading, studying and practising what you know, you can achieve better understanding in your chosen field of expertise. [pick one Skill from the Sheet: it gets improved by 1, more if Crit]

[X] Gamble - One thing you did learn while locked away in garrisons during the long winter months was to play cards and roll the dice. While you're far from proficient in the art of gambling, you could spend your free time risking your hard earned coin in a game of chance, hoping to win some more money. Or losing it all, who knows? [INT based; risk money to win more money; personal funds only]

There are some optional choices you have to take into account: [pick as many as needed or none at all]

[X] Pay double – Offer the nobles or mercenaries double their regular pay, increasing your chances of finding help and getting better quality soldiers hired. Plus, it lowers the likelihood of them stabbing you in the back while you sleep. Your cargo is a tempting target after all. [nobles and mercenaries cost two times more; increases loyalty; better chances at recruitment in both quality and quantity]

[X] Hard cap on recruitment – Set a hard cap on the number of nobles or mercenaries you intend to recruit. This doesn't mean you will reach the target given, only that if you have a large number of potential volunteers, they won't cost you a fortune. Without a hard cap, you will try and recruit as many men as possible, regardless of costs. [set hard cap, pick a number]

[X] Hard cap on Supplies
– Set a hard cap on the number of Supplies you intend to buy. This doesn't mean you will reach the target given, only that if you have a large amount of potential cargo, it won't cost you a fortune. Without a hard cap, you will try and buy as many Supplies as possible, regardless of costs. [set hard cap on number of Supplies, pick a number]

@Sertorius this option is for the escort we are planning to hire or the recruitment of officers?

Edit- Included double pay so hopefully we get some quality escorts. And the cap at 20 meaning the most we should pay is 400.

Only the escort is covered by this option.

Hmm... Are we really allowed to recruit officers in Warsaw? We didn't choose that royal favour before.
It's not like that.

The favour would grant an officer (or more) already in royal service right off the bat, free of charge or any effort.

Here you are simply binding your time, looking for any suitable candidates without employment while waiting.

All right then!

Better hire local nobles, right? At least that way they won't be Englishmen.

[Rolls 1]
"Haha, I'm both a local noble and an Englishman! Me, and 19 friends."
"RAAAGE."

@Sertorius can we look for items in the markets that increases CHA? Also do they stack or do we have to pick the highest i.e. a feathered hat CHA +2 or billowing cape CHA +2?

[X] Lets go Shopping!
-[X] Hire local nobles – Warsaw and the surrounding countryside are full of poor, landless nobles trying to make a living. You can hire some of them out to escort you to your destination. Most with any wits about them are armed with sabres, firearms, have personal mounts and know how to fight. Unless you're really unlucky and only find some of those unfortunates wearing wooden helmets for protection with rusty old sabres passed on from their grandfathers… at least they are relativity cheap. [10 ZŁ per person hired]
-[X] Keep Sapphire Brooch - While its former owner is not a man you would be glad to see again anytime soon, the brooch seems nice enough to keep and use. [+1 CHA while equipped]
-[X] No, we shall wait!
-[X] Recruit Irish Officers - While technically you can't barge into a tavern or town square announcing a recruitment drive with drums playing, it doesn't mean you can't look for qualified help among the locals. You can try and focus your attention towards your own countrymen, hoping that there are some Irishmen with the knack for leadership present. Of course, this will be much harder to achieve. [CHA based; search for officers of Irish descent]
-[X] Browse the local market - It may be winter, but merchants of various provenance are still very much present. You may use this opportunity to see if they have anything interesting to buy for your own personal use. Who knows, maybe you you can get yourself some new cloths or a shiny new weapon? [STE based; look for various items for personal use; personal funds only]
-[X] Pay double – Offer the nobles or mercenaries double their regular pay, increasing your chances of finding help and getting better quality soldiers hired. Plus, it lowers the likelihood of them stabbing you in the back while you sleep. Your cargo is a tempting target after all. [nobles and mercenaries cost two times more; increases loyalty; better chances at recruitment in both quality and quantity]
-[X] Hard cap on recruitment – Set a hard cap on the number of nobles or mercenaries you intend to recruit. This doesn't mean you will reach the target given, only that if you have a large number of potential volunteers, they won't cost you a fortune. Without a hard cap, you will try and recruit as many men as possible, regardless of costs. [20]
