Oh, hey, was just thinking about this quest recently (or, more specifically, about Fate/Empire of Ants hypothetical oneshot). Glad to see it's back.

So, looks like the Polish couple would be easier to track and probably won't go straight to murder when encountered, but the Assassin is a more direct to public safety and secrecy. Hm.

Eh, what the hell, we can afford to lose a supporting character or two.

I had fun reading this!
Omicron, please be honest: did you find it difficult to describe Lallement only as "secondmost Top Cop" without any, ah, connoted language? Beyond the word "Cop" of course, but that's really the bare minimum when trying to explain WTF a Préfet de Police is.

Actually you should correct that assumption. You have heard of "Magus Killers" who supposedly use mundane weaponry to capitalize on the blind spots of Magi who think they'll only be threatened by magic. A car bomb would be in the wheelhouse of such an assassin.
Y'know, say what you will about Kiri, but if he actually managed to inspire a generation of Magus Killers to follow in his footsteps then honestly good for him. :V

[X] The Polish team. You now have a better idea of their capabilities, but not of their personality or motives, and cannot be sure which class they're fielding. Better to try and fill in the blanks.

I wanna see more'a these two.

Why is that my first thought was that the Polish woman was King Jadwiga? As in, the lady who laid the foundations for the Polish Lithuanian Union?

Well yeah I'm kinda confused why they think the guy is the servant, with a name like that.

Anyway, this guy is the one making trouble, I think we should focus on him.

The real tragedy of this update was when I realized partway through that without Cedric on the scene, there was no one who could possibly shout "ACAB!" at Lallement through the phone

Is there a French expression for ACAB actually

Seems the option more likely to produce actual results.

It is somewhat odd that they don't even consider the possibility that the girl being protected is Caster. Caster servants buffing their master seems common enough that it would be an expected tactic. And it isn't like mages can't pull some rather impressive martial magic even without help.

In the previous update the Swords did consider that they didn't know which would be the Master and which would be the Servant, but Joseph busting out the environmental wrecking moves while Jadwiga did nothing just made the distribution of roles seem obvious in the moment. It'll come up again; they already have Anghelescu as an example of how buff magic can allow a human to perform Servant-class moves.

Joseph being the Master also means that the Assassin doesn't have to be unusually buff by their class standards. A skilled martial-focused magus being able to match an Assassin in direct close combat (which does not appear to be their main strength) would not be unexpected.

(Of course, they can just both be super-buff. I'm not good at gauging intended relative power level of animu fights.)

The good thing about muscle wizards is that stealth is not one of their class skills.

We know more about them now, this seems like a far easier task to accomplish than looking for a ghost which we know nothing about.

Also, Cream is precious and I want to see if her theory is accurate

Jagidwa and Joseph are delightful, and its a terrible pity that they are very likely to die. Almost guaranteed, really.

"I'm partial to Asian takeaway," the man says. His companion lowers her hands, glaring.

"We're in Paris and you want to eat Asian."

"There's actually a long tradition of French-Asian cuisine owing to the-" he starts, and then pauses.

This is a very interesting passage - because it implies that Joseph is not the Servant. His partiality to Asian takeaway is a long term thing that Jagidwa is clearly not familiar with, not a habit he has picked up in a short amount of time since summoning. There is also his evident knowledge about "the long tradition of French-Asian cuisine" which is not something the Grail would be likely to provide information on, unless he were cooking-focused. That said, it could be something that he decided to read up on after summoning, but still.

I will touch on possibilities for what Joseph might be, because he is clearly no conventional magus either.

"I don't know," the man says. "I can't feel them. I only saw them staring straight at us for a second - and then they were gone. I can't find them again."

She pulls closer to him, to the reassuring shadow he casts under the orange-tinged streetlights. "Are you sure it wasn't just a passerby?"

"Certain," he says. "We should move."

"They wouldn't attack us in the crowd, would they?" she says nervously.

Another interesting aspect is the implication here that Jadigwa isn't combat experienced - people are assuming Caster, which is reasonable, but I'm also considering the possibility that she's a magus or the like of some kind, and that the Servant they have simply doesn't come with them - unlikely, given their attacker sensed them (if they weren't remotely tracked or any other possibilities), but still theoretically possible.

It comes from a rooftop, a bolt of light, and the man moves, pushing the woman away. "Jadwiga, down!" he shouts as the bolt strikes the wall behind them, carving a hole in 19th century stone.

Then more come, falling like rain.

Everyone assuming Assassin, but a long-ranged volley of fire followed by a willingness to engage in close combat with an (assumed) Servant suggest that this could be an Archer with a relevant Noble Phantasm or Skill that lets them hide from visual sight -

You can't make out anything about the assailant.

They are, literally, a blank space. A hole in the footage, distinct enough that you can tell they're human-like - four limbs, a torso, a head, and whatever weapon they're using, a long sword or a spear seeming most likely. But that's all. No features can be made out, not even their gender, and even their size is inconsistent from one frame to the next.

Notably, this isn't something Presence Concealment is usually portrayed as doing - once you attack, you're visible and noticeable. Aan Assassin could well have an additional concealment effect of course, but Servants are ever as easily classified or boxed as would be convenient.

"Excuse me the fuck," Captain Whatshisface chimes in at this point, "somebody picked up and threw a car? What the fuck are you talking about?"

Somewhere in London, a member of Policies is feeling a migraine and doesn't know why.

The Cult is kinda bad at hiding Mystery.

To touch on the matter of Joseph - him being the Golem is possible, but his family may also use the Golem as Foundation, leading to this whole thing. Iit would be highly unusual for something in this field to involve being turned into a Golem-analogue, but its not like its impossible.

Chasing "Assassin" seems more pressing, but its also substantially more difficult. I am laughing at the shock about launching "surprise attacks in the middle of the city", though. Given the lack of casualties and actual witnesses, this was impressively restrained.

The Polish team is probably on high alert and more likely to be able to notice being tailed... but they are also very distinctive and got involved in a fight. Not only would Mads and co be able to pick up info on them, it may also involve finding info on other players in the War who are also reconnoitring.

Hrrrm.
arrows, followed by a spear, the short blurb suggests light arrows or something, but beyond that...?
*frowns* Information erasure though...
Part of me is wondering if our Assassin is, yanno, an Assassin, like an Assassin's creed Assassin. Because it feels like that sort of 'in your face' cheek that characterizes Omicron's writing to me. See the passage about Cream and muscle wizard fisting.

Joseph was capital-F Feeling Emotions at the dumb WW2 action movie too, which seems like a clue that he has personal history with the nazis. I feel like golem shenanigans are a good guess in this case, meaning he could be either a more recent servant or a magus from a lineage related to the golem

Or he's inside the golem itself and piloting it like a Kabbalistic clay supersuit.
