I realized that this forum is lacking something. A dedicated thread for KSP.

Of course you can get the game here, for a few bucks.

And to add some images, let's have a look at my current little project, based on an (abandoned) ESA plan to turn the ATV into a Mini Space Station.

Anyone know how to make the stock radiothermal generators or solar panels count as generators for the Brayton cycle converters in the interstellar mod? Trying to get the damn things to work on a solar power station.

I can now into spaceplanes. Your arguments are irrelevant. (really. Might have Mechjeb installed, but I flew her entirely manually)

2:1 starting T/W ratio, goes vertical before I pass the hangar, and can punt me into a 72km suborbital trajectory before I kick it into closed cycle on the Rapiers if I hit the right launch trajectory. Stupidly awesome. Stupidly. Awesome. Trying to see if it can hit a 300 km orbit so I can use it to carry 1.25m struts to a station or something else. Still not big enough to carry 2.5 meter fustek parts... :(

But I'll just have to figure out how to build a fuck-off huge full B9 spaceplane, then! (It can fly in FAR without modification, but the same stuff that makes it fucking epic in non-FAR flight make it squirley as hell. But it'll still fly. You just have to be careful not to flip the damn thing on takeoff.)

Here's my B9 Spaceplane in stable orbit, undertaking refueling (the tank gives an idea of the scale of the stuff):

I fear my arguments are still relevant. ;)

Oh sush. The only reason I haven't built one of those is because I don't have the parts yet. When I do, I'm mounting a 3.75 meter thermal rocket and putting one big enough to loft Fustek parts with an unmanned tug into orbit. I'll use the small one for launching crew (once I get crew tanks), or for launching small communication satalites or ion powered impactors for Minmus and the mun. And if I can find a good 4 meter long truss design, some of those for a space station.

I have heard that mods are needed to make certain parts of KSP playable. Since I just got KSP on steam, are there any recommended mods, or "must-get" mods?

I can try and install them after I finish XCOM:EW and start KSP downloading.

Spaceplane+, Active Texture reducer, possibly Interstellar, B9 (though hopefully not for too much longer), either KW Rocketry or Novapunch (either has their uses), Kerbal Alarm Clock, Ship Manifest (lets you move stuff around inside), Rastor Prop Monitor (Gives you glass cockpits and immensely improves IVA) and that's it as far as I know for absolute must-have mods.

Additional ones can be:

Fustek station modules (lets you build actual stations in late-game)
Mechjeb (can be seen as a 'needed' mod)
ALCOR lander (what RPM was created for and a fucking excellent little pod. You could fly this little fella completely in IVA and make it work)
Deadly Reentry (exactly what it says on the tin. Hope you brought heat-shields)
Proceedural Fairings (can be superceeded by KW/Novapunch fairings)
Near Future pack (pick and choose)
Connected Living Spaces (makes moving around inside a ship/station possible)
Enhanced Visuals (any of this stuff.)
And others that I'm sure I'm forgetting.

You heard wrong. Really, my top two mods are FAR and MechJeb, and I always install them unless I'm specifically going mod-free (FAR for the much improved aerodynamics, MechJeb for the VAB and inflight deltaV numbers) but neither are, strictly, essential in the same way I would class, say SkyUI or the USKP for Skyrim.

EDIT:

Actually there is one mod that's so essential I completely forgot about it because I never, ever play without it and it needs to be part of the core game: Editor Extensions.

There is only a single 'must get' mod.

A parachute mod that don't rip them of if you land during timewarp. There is some others that's nice like kerbal engineer, mechjeb, kerbal attachment or feram, but that is the only one that you NEED.

I'm looking for a mod that let me build ships at other planets. Any ideas?
Extraplanetary launchpads and kethane. I think EPL has kethane as a dependency, and even if it doesn't, you'll still want kethane. AFAIK, you can't get fuel with EPL, just the rocket

Also Alternis kerbol is pretty cool, especially with the asteroids. They turn into satellites of Jool. My current game has like 30 of them all in different joolian orbits that are close to kerbin's orbit around jool.
