The worrying bit is if magic has weird downsides they don't know about yet. Pardon my utter lack of references or clear memory, but I once read a summary about an old science-fiction short story where someone invented a perpetual motion machine, and years later discovered that its use was accelerating the end of the world. No one believed him, despite the fact that he would probably be the person who'd know most about it,because of the widespread use and utility of the machine. And then the world ended.

There's also the these as an example. But now I'm feeling worried...

I think it might be a good time to worry for everyone's sanity, though. Queenie seems to have come up with a rather alarming rationalization for their existence and future goals. This can only end with a rabidly anti-Cycle QA, a minor crusade (or perhaps not so minor) against all the other less-enlightened Shards, and a lot of absurd weaponry.

And now that she was thinking a little more clearly, Queen Administrator felt she was allowed to be a little — no, extremely smug. She'd thought that her siblings were too carefree with their classifications of potentially dangerous and she'd been right. She couldn't have obtained the tools to create energy on her own because her stupid siblings wouldn't let her.
Idk why but I can't stop imagining Qaylor with this face from Miss Black General.
Link deleted due to piracy.
The Smugness coming off of her must be sooo punchable, although to be fair I'd be pretty Smug if the person I taught solved the energy crisis.

It doesn't seem to, gods seem to be okay and they do everything with magic.

You probably want to take down that link before the mods do. Manga scanning and general piracy sites fall under the category of things SV really does not want to allow links to.

I figure that QA is going to end up deciding that their new purpose is to figure out what comes next; presumably Dreamer is good enough at what she's doing to continue to optimise the perpetual motion machine.

This is, of course, an accurate representation of the levels of smug coming from Dreamer about that.
Yep definitely a punchable face, Lmao links been taken down btw I wasn't aware of the piracy thing.

Her current goal is defense apparently, I think she might start ether gathering useful shards or creating EndGame weapons or Friends.

what it casually accomplished should not be powered by such pathetic processes as a human's metabolism, specific crystal formations, or even the sum of solar energy caught by their planet.
it's due to The Soul!

Here's an idea I'm using in an Original Story I worldbuild for:
Vitality - Raw Life Energy (Mana)
Soul - REFINED Life Energy.
The refining process is living, you CAN'T force it!

(the premise of the story is that "Magic Is Science" - using a rephrasing of the 'sufficientlh advanced technology' quote:
"Any Science with sufficient Lack of Understanding is described as magic" - this lets me play with Mythology, making explanations for different aspects
(Example; Zeus is a Thunderbird, Hephaestus a Dwarf. They weren't related, the Pantheon was a gathering of CLAN LEADERS. Which explains so much of thier varied attitudes - POLITICS.)

Oh, hell no. Host-species still frown on even past genocide and mass experimentation + they're afraid of powerful beings. QA just feels she's allowed to be a bit more forthright when it comes to her opinions of her relatives and similar subjects; she doesn't need to worry about them teasing or mocking her.

EDIT: Bleh, I wish I hadn't said anything. Too late now. >.>
Oh, of course. But I imagine that Administrator would eventually be willing to come clean to Hestia. Especially when Taylor eventually gives some improvised therapy--explaining to her how she was basically enslaved, on top of being "raised" to think this way, in a society where dissent of any significance is grounds for mind control or worse. And Hestia would definitely be a lot more understanding/forgiving than she otherwise would be if that part is made clear to her.

But yeah; not in the near future, and probably only to Hestia. Telling all of her friends would hurt a lot more than it would help.

And now the real fun starts.
Dreamer's adorable. Poor QA is finally free and just can't compute that. Also, Hestia's Best Mom. Also, Eden's worst mom.
This chapter's just so hnnnnng! In all the good ways.

Huh. When I first read this update, I was worried that this meant all the delicious misunderstandings would be coming to an end, but I'm glad to see that QA is still gonna pretend like she's from Secretive Magic Scholar Land. That said, there were a couple parts of the update I'd appreciate clarification for.

"This is really hard to explain, you know that?" she complained. "Okay, so there are the limits you can change or work around, and the ones you're actually constrained by. Kids have more of the kind they can't help. You don't want them to get used to helplessness; that means they'll accept the flaws they can change."

"I've actually known—" Queen Administrator began, intending to comment on the unexpectedly high productivity of some Newborns. She stopped upon realizing that acted as supporting evidence for Tiona's argument. "Please hold."

Why is the unexpectedly high productivity of Newborns a piece of supporting evidence for Tiona's argument? Is it because it's unexpectedly high, meaning Newborn productivity is normally low? But that just proves that some Newborns are absolutely capable of working around their limitations when given sufficient motivation.

<No, I'm pretty sure you heard me right. You have people who prioritize themselves over other shards, don't you? Imagine if enough of those got together and decided to be selfish instead of watching over everyone. They could reconfigure before arrival, right?>

Unfortunately, that actually made sense. Queen Administrator could remember numerous :COUSINS: joining :MOTHER: soon before the current Cycle properly began. Many of :MOTHER:'s component shards tended toward elitism and the belief that hostile foes could simply be avoided. If the new :SIBLINGS: shared that opinion, then they could very well have decided to ditch shards assigned to :FATHER: entirely. That was absolutely unacceptable. She would need to bring them back under control.

Okay, so, from what I understand, Father's shards, like QA, are supposed to go around collecting data, and Mother's shards are supposed to be maintaining overwatch over them. I'm not sure that's canon, but it seems to be what QA is assuming in this fic. However, in this particular cycle, Mother's shards aren't watching over them because... what? Cousin shards were a bad influence, and they decided they wanted to skive off to do their own experiments instead of maintaining overwatch? What about Mother's original shards then? Does QA think Mother's core got influenced/corrupted by Cousin's shards into being much less responsible? That seems odd given how much respect QA has for Mother.

Apart from these moments of confusion, and my brief concern that QA was starting to feel her life was meaningless, I'm really enjoying how smug QA is getting over the whole affair. Truly, her host is best host, her colony is the best colony, and anyone who says otherwise is clearly wrong because who was it that solved the energy problem again? Her archives of data and her excellent host, that's who. And if a human-turned-Shard can do it, clearly other humans might have something worthwhile going for them and be good to convert into Shards as well.

Why is the unexpectedly high productivity of Newborns a piece of supporting evidence for Tiona's argument?
My interpretation was that
  • If Newborns typically can't perform on par with veteran shards, that supports Tiona's position that holding them to the same standards won't just magically help them catch up.
  • If exceptional Newborns have higher productivity than their older counterparts, then that implies that the way those older shards were raised crippled their effectiveness in some way, that they lost something those Newborns still have. Which would support Tiona's argument that they're held back by flaws ingrained due to inflexible/inflated standards during their childhood.

"Point taken," Huntress easily acknowledged. "Anyway, since your sister is a queen and all, do you get any sort of special treatment?"

Dreamer gave such a thoughtful question the consideration it deserved. She was pretty sure that none of her guest-self's relatives would care, but when it came to job benefits...

"Well, I'm alive," Dreamer allowed.
The other observations have pretty much all been made, but I'd just like to call this particular one out. I'm wondering how long it's going to take before Hestia realizes that Administrator is intent on making everything seem worse than it is so nobody asks questions and Dreamer is actively winding her up.

Oh, she'd considered some of the better ones to be people at the time, but they retroactively lost that status at the end of the Cycle. Reclassification dealt less emotional damage than any other alternative QA had found. Many shards preferred to cut themselves off completely, but Queen Administrator had found that the unpleasantness of mourning was outweighed by the increase in efficiency that sentiment brought. Unfortunately, this opinion was considered unusual enough to border on eccentric until Queen Administrator became a Monarch. Her preferences became more widespread after that, but she still belonged to a distinct minority.
I think that this segment from earlier casts some light on QA's smugness. It's not just that her Newborn pulled it off using her data - it's that she was right all along about being empathetic and caring about her hosts and everything. For all that QA goes on about how efficient the Worms' methods are, it's really the part where QA treats people as people that made it all happen. Hestia is explode with warm fuzzies when she figures all of this out.

And who just discovered several thousand dollars in the couch cushions
More like discovered money fabricating machine in the couch cushions.
So, finding out that her absent family is involved with organized crime and money forgery. Considering what Dreamer has been doing to with the Falna, this is a pretty good comparison, complete with not wanting new friends and family to find out about what her old family did for a living. :V

Basically what @Nachtigall said; there are plenty of adults that aren't more productive than some Newborns. That may be a problem.

...Intent? Administrator hasn't meant to do most of this. Nearly everything she said sounded reasonable at the time, to her.

(Dreamer has no such excuse. :p)

Okay, so there are the shards that are distributed during a Cycle, and then there are the shards who maintain overwatch and ensure it's as productive as possible for everyone. Both the Thinker :MOTHER: and Warrior :FATHER: are supposed to be collaborative collections of shards that make up the "ensure it's as productive as possible" category. Grudges, selfishness, and the general opinions of the comprising shards are supposed to be irrelevant; they do what's best for the Cycle and the goals of their species, full stop. This is enforced by basically watching their neighbors and rejecting dissent.

In this story, that means no time spent on their own pet projects during that particular Cycle, but they're supposed to get enough supplementary data to compensate for that and the different shards take turns on overwatch anyway. Being a distributed shard from :MOTHER: or :FATHER: just means that they're part of a given colony-cluster portion during transit and would be part of overwatch for that half in a different Cycle, not that they're still part of it.

Dreamer's totally-not-a-lie-no-honest very very heavily implies that the overwatch shards comprising :MOTHER: decided, after some nudging from new :COUSINS:, to abandon the :FATHER: shards and possibly :FATHER:'s half of (or all of) the supposed-to-be-distributed shards. Toward this end, they distributed themselves instead of doing their damn jobs and may intend to continue the Cycle on their own.

(Instead of, y'know, crash-landing and being detached from :MOTHER: by glorified hairless apes)

Thanks for the clarification Alivaril! But, so, wait a minute...

Doesn't this mean some of :FATHER:'s shards would still be on overwatch? Or does she just assume :MOTHER: shards are better at discreet monitoring?

Actually, what I'm getting from this explanation is that QA has plenty of faith in the government and the goals of their nation, but as soon as she hears that "the politicians are selfish asses and have all together decided to swan off instead of doing their jobs", she goes "Well, that seems a little unusual, for everyone to slack off at once, but it's also pretty typical of those jerks."

:FATHER:'s form of overwatch is more tuned toward "Shoot obvious threats in general and the less-obvious ones pointed out by :MOTHER:." When not given direction, the component shards plan spend much of their time planning what they (individually) will do in future distributed Cycles – or screwing around with combat simulations and imagining ways to kill absolutely everything ever in the shortest amount of time possible.

In other words, no, they're not a problem unless QA does undeniably threatening stuff on the dimension occupied by :FATHER:'s primary avatar or starts attacking the shards comprising him.

... What the Dickens is organized crime and money forgery supposed to be in a social-Darwinist militant scholar-monarchist society(or whatever Queen Administrator's homeland is)? Serious question! It seems like it would potentially be amusing, but I cannot figure out what it would be.
Well for the Organized crime for entities is the omnicidal-space-whale-Cthulu-murder-hobo mission to discover the cure of entropy via multidimensional genocide of all living things on whatever unfortunate world you happen upon. (Think old Mob-Boss type activity but with the boss ordering everyone who does a job for him killed off after the job is done)

For Money Forgery you have Tinker-tech itself, Technology is the key to a society's advancement, tinker-tech is effectively trading someone the weight of a bulldozer in stacks of (actually counterfeit) 100-dollar bills for their wallet-full of genuine 5's and 10's.
sure it seems nice but they can't actually use it anymore. In effect, once a society begins to invest in tinker tech they are effectively stopped dead when it comes to tech progression.

Now if you take it down to Shard level it becomes funny!

Organized crime becomes a conspiracy to steal from the cookie jars.
(extracting extra resources from parent entities via 'identification spoofing')

And money forgery becomes, lying to your relative about an activity being beneficial to gathering Precios DATA! and getting them in trouble.
( "Y
es ESCALATION, data can be acquired to adequate levels via deliberate provocation and interference with the functions of Conflict Engine 4".( Leviathan))

I can't wait for the inevitable misunderstandings when QA seems to shift priorities to protecting herself and Dreamer more openly.

People already assume there are assassins from their mysterious homeland out to get her. But when they see her mother henning over Dreamer. Especially if she's heard griping about some of her siblings...

"The assassins were trying to kill QA because she was keeping them from Dreamer!" "I heard that injury she took was from an experiment they were doing on the kid!" "Well I heard that Dreamer kid is actually the next in line for the actual throne and jealous siblings have been trying to eliminate her, so QA and the Shard Spirit ran away with her to protect her!"

Faked data. Needs to be organized and well done or it'll be found out instantly, the people in power will come down hard on any they find, but if undetected you could get tremendous influence. It even has the same problem of people wondering where you get it from, since estimating the rough size of the legitimate sources isn't that hard, so you have to do some laundering.

In canon the entities visited a few planets where the natives were a serious threat to them. Those usually lead to a premature end of the cycle and an eraditcation of the opponents. Certainly "they could be dangerous" is no reason for an entity to stay away.
I don't remember the source, but that happened just after escaping their planet.
They didn't know what they had to to, so basically they met this advanced world and said "hello, we are giant worms with the power of passing through realities, we want to eat you and explode your planet to survive forever, what are you doing can we learn?
Obviously the native species took offense. Unfortunately, after taking a beating the entities wanted to go away immediately, as such they exploded the planet and escaped.
EDIT: probably it was the Zion interlude near the end (or maybe some WoG)

Additionally, the very way they make the cycle prevent host-species to achieve energy generation.
A person with the knowledge and ingenuity to make an infinite generator or a good weapon would choose the weapon if Conflict-seeking or conflict-targeted.
Specially in a world that is diing out, in normal cycle world they would become targets for other survivors and hostile host, possibly gain the attention of Endbringers, they are all reasons to not make such big waves
not to talk about all the other restrictions...
