Italian Quest: A Mercenary Boot

Well it seems that despite the city having walls it will be a relatively good contract for us. And if we mange to get more money from the contract negotiation(Plunder) it will be very lucrative for us.

You have 2 Swiss units of Pikemen, 1 Italian Crossbow and 3 Baggage Trains

Looking at this, we only have enough Arms/Food/Support for a single Fortnight, though we've got enough Coin for ten.

How much is Arms/Food/Support to supply our whole company for a Fortnight going to cost? If it's expensive, we may want to lean more heavily on upfront pay.

Coins convert to resources at a 1:1 ratio - they're basically 1 coin's worth of unit.

[X] The Pisan Contract

I'll be honest, I have no idea why so much enthusiasm for Urbino. Am I missing something important?

Well I can't speak for others but for me personally its various reasons.

The first is my fascination with the location and its history. Urbino as we know it in 1503 was basically built by Federico da Montefeltro, our employers father. Through his mercenary work he built Urbino from a relative backwater to one of the centers of the Renaissance.

The second is the connections the job could bring. Our employer is a well connected man. His mother is a Sforza, former rulers of Milan, and while they don't control it anymore they are still a family to be respected. He also has ties to the De la Rovere family and the future Pope Julius II comes form that family. Along with having ties to the rulers of Mantua, the Gonzaga by way of his wife. Doing well here could open lots of doors.

Third is that choosing this job doesn't rule out working with any of the other factions that offered us jobs. We will be retaking Urbino form the Borgias a family widely disliked by Italy at this time, and getting an opinion boost just for doing our job seems like a good plus.

If we were to take another job say Florence, it would pit us against Pisa and vice versa. And if we take the French offer its pits us against Venice. The Venetian offer doesn't have any specific targets but we may very well face of against French forces. So the Urbino offer is the only job offer that leaves us free to pursue jobs with any faction we like afterwards without any repercussions. Sorry for the long post.

I'm quite amused by the nearly unanimous vote total. It's sorta like the returns you'd see coming out of an oppressive dictatorship where the "dissent" exists just to give the election some semblance of legitimacy..

Early September, 1503 Pt.2 - City of Milan, French-occupied Milan

Milanese coin depicting the Duke of Milan, Louis XII of France

Before the negotiations begin, you and Johannes sit down for a meal with the representative the Duke has sent, Giovanni is an amicable and stylishly dressed man. His permanent semi-scowl and straight-mouthed demeanour makes him seem somewhat intimidating. You can see how the contrast might throw some people off, but you find it more amusing than anything else.

The negotiations begin and his Sicilian accent makes him sound unreasonably smooth. He drives a hard bargain but you get the kind of deal you want out of it. The Duke is not an unreasonable man, and his offer seems to be more or less as advertised. Giovanni makes it clear that the Duke would look very poorly on any plunder in Urbino, but the Sicilian also agrees to raise your share of the plunder should Cesare Borgia's forces decide to engage you, as well as the severance pay at the end of the contract.

The Final Contract is…

1) Duties - The Duke will relieve you of foraging duties, giving you -30% food cost while in Urbino
2a) Upkeep Pay - 978 Coin per Fortnight (pay begins after the 4 fortnight march to Urbino)
2b) Upfront Pay - 6090 Coin
3) Fulfilment Pay/Plunder - 20% more shares of Plunder (in case of battle) and 2348 Coin
4) Contract termination: The contract will end should the city be held safely for 6 months (12 fortnights), the employer terminate the contract, or should the unit go without pay for 2 fortnights.

[X] Accept the Contract (Gain 6090 Coin)
[X] Decline the Contract, find something else (You will receive no pay this Fortnight)

Having finished the negotiations, you now need to prepare for the days to come…

Alright, so, as I understand it, we need to pack enough supplies of various types for 4 fortnights, before we even get to our destination.

Food, if I understand it, we can afford to only buy enough for 4 fortnights, since it'll be cheaper in Urbino. Will we be able to reliably buy Arms and Support in Urbino as well, or would it be best to stock up heavily on those here and now?

I am of the opinion that its better to stock up on supplies now rather than later. Supplies enough for 4 weeks, maybe 5 just to be on the safe side.

@KlinkerKing what happens if we dont manage to supply our men with arms or support. Do they desert/mutiny?

Well, they won't like it if they don't have clothes or have to drag wagons. In terms of likelihood to cause desertion, Food is obviously the most important, followed by Support. Arms is unlikely to cause desertion unless the situation is dire.

EDIT: Updated the Supply Table to actually make sense. Accidentally gave you guys 5000 pikemen carrying stuff

For a total of 1680 gold leaving 1466 gold in reserve but with the injection of gold from the contract we should be fine.

Edit- So if we accept the contract and purchase everything above we will have 7556 gold left. A nice sum I think.

Support you can get in most villages, after all, clothes and shovels are found just about everywhere. Arms is a little trickier, but any city and most towns can supply it.

With the updated supply table we can carry a maximum of 1560 units of supplies, so we're going to have to buy some along the way.
How much food can we buy along the way?
