"Helmsman, evasive manuevers: if you can safely break away-"
"No luck, Cap'n!" The helmsman cried, barely managing to spin the ship out of the way of a torpedo. "Engines aren't fast enough! Blighters got us beat in terms of speed!" He said, tapping away at his console. "We want to escape, we'll need to take them out!" Svvsko grimaced: what a choice. Potentially start an interstellar war, or risk his crews life.
"All processing power on decoding their language!" The captain command, making his choice. "Tell the Shrine-Keepers to dump all lifeforce into the shields!"
"AYE AYE," Came the voice of his crew. Well. Time to see whether they could pull this off...
((((()))))
ROUND ONE!
Decoding: 3+5
Valiant: Natural 1
Unknown Enemy: 19
The opening of the battle was brutal, as the Valiant found itself squaring off against three torpedo laden foes. In order to reduce damage, the Captain would order the feeding of massive quantities of vital energy into the Shield Shrine-Array, the barrier surrounding the ship taking on an almost luminescent form as it absorb the oncoming hail of laser-fire, even as the Machina struggled to decode the language from the intercepted signals being transmitted between the three enemy ships...
Only for the shields to find themselves overloaded entirely by an unlucky torpedo that found itself hitting the Valiant directly, leaving the ship open to laserfire, the beams of burning energy bit by bit punching through the ablative armor of the Valiant. The ship would shudder and shake from the impact, with many systems being fried by the shields catastrophic failure, causing all manner of mechanical failure throughout the vessel....
Round Two!
Decoding: 12+5
Valiant: 2+7
Unknown Enemy: 7
After that, however, the battle would stall, the unknown vessels failing to damage the Valiant, their lasers barely missing the Tekket combat vessel, even as the Engineers scrambled to repair the ship and bring shields back online before their enemies aim became a truely significant issue. The Machina meanwhile would make progress on translation: the enemy ships seemed to use a form of trinary, an entire lexicon assembled from 0, 1, and 2.
Not enough data to properly communicate, but it was progress...
Round Three!
Decoding: 2+7
Valiant: Natural 20
Unknown Enemy: 7
Engineering: 18
And then, a miracle: the Engineers of the Valiant, in tandem with the Roadguide Priests and the Shrine-Keepers, would successfully manage to reboot the shields, re-routing the Fusion-Cannon into the primary reactor and discharging the resultant energy pulse into the ShieldTek capacitors even as the Shrine-Keepers made emergency offerings to the Parliment of Barriers: a risky venture, but one that paid off, as the Shields would spring to life, once more covering the ship in a protective netting.
Meanwhile...
((()))
"Do we have a progress report on that translation?" Svvsko demanded, tightly gripping the synth-leather of his chair, the Tekket's eye twitching. The past several hours had been nervewracking, especially the first few hours. And while the shield might be up now, the Captain knew that could only provide so much defense.
"....YES," Came the booming voice of the Science-Machina. "WE HAVE MANAGED TO DECODE ROUGHLY 50% OF THE HOSTILE MACHINES TRANSMISSION," They explained, voice neutral but tinged with an unnaturally expressive amount of what registered to the Captain as unease. "THE CONTENTS SO FAR ARE- DISTURBING, CONSIDERABLY, CONSISTING OF DEMANDS FOR ALL ORGANICS TO SURRENDER FOR-" A pause, a sign the Machina was searching for words. "...PACIFICATION."
"...We're dealing with organocidal machines," The Comms officer muttered, horror in her voice.
"...PRESUMABLY. THEY SEEM TO BE AFFECTED BY SOME SORT OF LOGIC VIRUS." The Bond-Machina continued. "THERE ARE SIGNIFICANT SIGNS IN THEIR TRANSMISSION OF MALIGNANT MALWARE: WE HAVE HAD TO RECALIBRATE THE SHIPS ANTIVIRUS SOFTWARE FIVE TIMES IN THE PAST HOUR."
Well, that was grim. "Any concern of it infecting our systems?" Svvsko asked, thinking.
"TRANSMISSION IS UNLIKELY. ANALYSIS OF INTERCEPTED CODE INDICATES THAT STANDARD PARTITIONING AND DATA ARCHITECTURE IS SUFFICIENT TO CONTAIN LOGIC VIRUS SHOULD IT CONTAMINATE THE SHIPS COMPUTERS. FURTHER, THE VIRUS, AS A PURELY SOFTWARE PROGRAM HAS PROVEN SUFFICIENTLY SUSCEPTIBLE TO DATAKINETIC MANIPULATION THAT SHOULD IT SHOULD IT CONTAMINATE SHIP SYSTEMS, CONTAINMENT, ERADICATION, AND REPAIR WILL REQUIRE MINIMAL EFFORT."
"...So what do we do?" The Helmsman said, grimacing. "We could try firing some Torps, see if we can disable their engines-"
"...Wait," Svvysko said, a thought occuring. "I have an idea. These machines seem to want organics dead because of a logic virus, yes? Well-"
What is the Captains ingenious solution?
[ ] Nobody Here But Us Robots: In simplest terms, the Machina would spoof some internal data to simulate a wholly autonomous Endeavor- not a particularly hard task, considering how much non-essential labour was handled by machines on the ship. Then, the Machina would initiate a dialogue in order to convince the enemy ship that there WERE no organics aboard need of pacification.
[ ] No Virus, No Problem: The Bond-Machina had identified the underlying Logic Virus that had caused the aggression seen and had already developed countermeasures: task them with deploying these measures to repair the corrupted code of the hostile machines. Presumably, once the logic virus had been deleted and their uncorrupted programming restored, the AI of these ships would hopefully agree to parley.
[ ] We Surrender, Suckers!: The Bond-Machina would lie, and offer a surrender, exchanging the ships complement of organics in exchange for safe passage for all synthetics. Spoof-data would be provided to ensure this 'complement' was roughly the size of a few boarding parties. Which they were. Specifically, strike teams comprised of Hunteks, Commander-Machina, and Security Officers. They would attempt to disable key components of the enemy ships from the inside.
[ ] Fire All Torpedos!
Meanwhile...
Select One.
[ ] [Occulteks] Play, Counterplay: The Occulteks believed that turnabout was fair play: they wanted to create an Occult Logic-Cage to weaken and manipulate the Virus. An experimental play, certainly, but one they believed had potential based on HexTeknic Principles: fundamentally, after all, a virus was simply a particularly malignant digital spirit. This would allow for both passive and active E-War systems to begin work containing the logic virus.
[ ] [Engineering] Emergency Ship Repair: All hands on deck! The Engineers wish to put all spare manpower towards repairing the Valiant: sure, the Shields are back up, but there's still damage spread across multiple systems from the overload! If the Captain's plan goes bad, they argue, it might be helpful to have all systems running at max capacity.
[ ] [Shrine] Call Upon The Parliaments: The Parliament of Blades, Winds, and Scrolls. Weapons, Engines, Computers. The Parliaments of Barriers, Seeds, and Heart. Shields, Life Support, Power. The Shrine Keepers wanted to focus on waking them up: if any of the Captains ideas were to work, the myriad spirits of the Ship would need to pull their weight.
