:They're often called "Black Heralds" by those who are familiar with them, so there's that, but they don't quite have the same strict standards as that lot. Any Shin'a'in can swear themselves to Her service as a Swordsworn, becoming clanless, sexless, magicless, and earning the right to declare blood-feud. You really don't want to fight any of the older ones; many deceased Swordsworn will go on to become dream-teachers for the living, so if a Swordsworn has had enough time to learn the lessons of past generations, they're fairly close to unstoppable by lone targets. A group of them could effectively challenge you, flight or no flight.:
Not that I think we'll ever get in a fight with the Swordsworn, but pretty sure Sigurd is underestimating Jade here. I'm sure they're tremendously skilled, but it's hard to imagine a group of magicless warriors seriously threatening her, unless they can also casually cut through steel and shoot giant exploding laser beams.
If they have a way to deal with flying enemies, then they just about have to have some magic ability.
Well I don't feel like explaining. I look forward to his jaw dropping in the future.Maybe, but I'm betting he thinks Jade needs to be relatively close to fight effectively with her magic. Or else needs to periodically dive down to attack in melee. Enough to give the Swordsworn openings, especially if they have archers.
In reality though, any serious fight against a group of ground-based opponents like that would involve simply bombarding the area with Celestial Lances, far outside their maximum range. Yet as SWB said, Sigurd likely has no idea Jade can do stuff like that, because he's never been told about her combat capabilities. (No doubt intentional on Agneyastra's and Mitra's part.)
While on the ground side the ideal is to not identify themselves as Celestial Lance targets, then stab Jade some time after she lands. Agneyastra's local omniscience is a more complete defense against scary sword people than flight is.In reality though, any serious fight against a group of ground-based opponents like that would involve simply bombarding the area with Celestial Lances, far outside their maximum range.
I'll admit I've only read the Griffon series, which is a looooooooooong time before the Heralds of Valdemar series, but my impression is that a "gribbly thing" encountered in the Heralds era could easily just be a lost bioweapon from the mage wars - the equivalent of a D&D gorgon or chimera. How intelligent was it? What were its capabilities? How did it wipe out the clan in question? Were the Swordsworn using enchanted blades - hell, were they even using blades at all, or was the key to victory doing something like using hammers to smash its chitinous shell, or setting its jellylike flesh alight?...as a rule the Swordsworn fight crazy BS stuff. Like, there's a song about how one of the canonical Swordsworn's guides became both Swordsworn and guide, and it basically goes like this "crazy gribbly murdered nearly the entire clan with only me and one other getting away, we swore to Kal'enel and trained up, then we went and two manned the gribbly and I threw myself on it's claws to create a faster opening, so I died so now I guide people, also unthinking generosity is bad mm kay."
So frankly, while it would probably be pretty bloody in a theoretical "Jade vs a bunch of Swordsworn" and certainly an uphill fight for the Swordsworn... both of those things are Tuesday for Swordsworn.
She's the kind of goddess who likes quiet respect and philosophical debates between followers, not giant temples in Her honor.:
Can we have her talk to Agneyastra about this?
:You'll need to ask Her that question yourself, but I can't imagine she'd turn you away without even a little help.:In fact, question: Would Kal'enel be willing to talk to us about divinity, how to be one, and our relative semi Devine state as a godling?
:No, I mean... ugh. Yeah, I'm not touching that argument with the longest limb I can make.:
Sigurd pauses and appears to consider his own statement.
:Huh. I don't even know how long that is anymore. Don't freak out if you catch me playing with them later, got it?:
...Why do you have a bad feeling about this?
Take this opportunity to show sig some of the more... Exotic animal species. Why do I have the feeling that we'll be seeing a white giraffe at some point in the future?
*Googling for a bit*
Or possibly a giant white squid, if he's considering limbs rather than legs?
I'd be kind of weird to see a squid on land though.
Ya, Jade has no reason clue of how good she might be in a fight because in most cases it makes more sense just to walk away. Also she has so many OOC's that if she wins it is hard to say that it was because she is more powerful. More then she took them by surprise.Heck, even we don't know the top end of our own range. We have a number of extremely powerful techniques that we've never tested and can't use in simulation, starting with Unison+Equip and Overchanneling.
If we do get into any fights, most likely in the pelagirs, do they have any information about common threats and recommended tactics? Going back to that pessimism thing, it's better to go in assuming a fight will find us and we'd be better off being at least a bit ready.
I'm not sure where mindshields get there.: Don't use magic until after you've said hello. It should be fair game afterward.:
At least the limits seem to be the limits of a creature, or something around those linesAt one point I was wondering what the requirements for his shapeshifting was, with the idea that Agneyastra could provide engineered organisms for him to copy. Did we ever figure out if that would work?
"Can you turn into creatures if you haven't seen them before?"
: No. :
"Can you scale them up?"
: Only to the limits of any given animal. I need to be careful; if I don't get everything perfect, I start breaking and that hurts. :
Are you framing it as a [X] question? Last I know Vaynel and Sigurd may not know about Agneyastra's avatar and her being another souled object like Mitra. (Agneyastra previously recommended not to mention abilities from outside this plane at them, but in the other hand they saw us leave to Eternity and maybe arrive from there too)Do we need to conceal specifically mana magic until we're more trusted, or do we need to conceal all apparently supernatural abilities? Does Sigurd count as magic, or his telepathy? Our artificial vessels? Agneyastra's avatar or the Stalker? Our mind shields?

If Kal'enal and Vkandis are in a relationship, would Kal'enal be able to extend useful influence or information-gathering into Karse? For example, if the highest-quality undesired Gift available is in Karse, would she be able to guide us to the owner? If we have to enter Karse to search, would she be able to offer any notable assistance? Or would she be limited to cryptic advice regardless of the circumstance?
:Mana magic, I feel. You can't exactly conceal most of your other abilities.:Do we need to conceal specifically mana magic until we're more trusted, or do we need to conceal all apparently supernatural abilities? Does Sigurd count as magic, or his telepathy? Our artificial vessels? Agneyastra's avatar or the Stalker? Our mind shields?
Are there any natural disasters we should keep an eye out for in case our usual luck continues and some city ends up in danger while we're there?
:Oh, good heavens, no. That's the sort of thing you should light some incense for, pray, and let the gods take care of it with extreme prejudice. Not even the evil gods want that shapeless garbage in our universe.:Do we need to worry about devoid mana? If we encounter devoid mana, how should we go about dealing with it? Last time something like that came up we claimed authority and took charge of a joint purification effort; would a similar approach work here?
:I really don't think you're going to stumble across something like that; don't worry yourself searching for problems where there are none.:What do we do if we do somehow manage to stumble across something nasty hiding among the Shin'a'in? Because, again, low-probability but still within the scope of our luck.
: Vanyel here is clueless and I only know about the surrounding countries, sorry. Hardorn is to the east of Valdemar and the land will literally eat you if you hurt it enough. Iftel is to the north and Vanyel here is the one who helped set up its magical barrier in the first place; you might be able to fly over that one, but you honestly shouldn't. That's a good way to get an enchanted arrow in your neck. Apart from that, I'd just keep your senses peeled for gigantic magical arrays when you're traveling; Valdemar's is the only nation-sized example I can think of that's even remotely subtle. I mean, I don't know about any of the others, but I knew about Valdemar's before coming because its hidden nature was such a huge topic of discussion. Smaller wards will always be a concern, of course, but again, you should be able to sense those if you're careful.:We appear to have been given passes for Valdemar's anti-mage system, but are there any other strategic defenses to steer clear of on this planet?
Is this one of the planes on which Agneyastra has deployed an orbital survey constellation? Either way, might be a good idea to put up a drone and see how high it goes.Iftel is to the north and Vanyel here is the one who helped set up its magical barrier in the first place; you might be able to fly over that one, but you honestly shouldn't. That's a good way to get an enchanted arrow in your neck.
If Agneyastra hasn't put up a survey constellation, this is a pretty good reason to do it. Might also want to confer with Vanyel to make sure her book-scanning got her a good idea of what the magical arrays in question would look like.Apart from that, I'd just keep your senses peeled for gigantic magical arrays when you're traveling;
Huh, interesting.Hardon is to the east of us and the land will literally eat you if you hurt it enough.
Right, active deities, and the evil gods here are self-interested evil rather than nihilist omnicidal evil. Good.:Oh, good heavens, no. That's the sort of thing you should light some incense for, pray, and let the gods take care of it with extreme prejudice. Not even the evil gods want that shapeless garbage in our universe.
