-[x] Advocate for bringing him along.
"Nanoha, Sidhe, Mitra, Mom? Your thoughts? I think we should bring him along, but I don't want to unilaterally ignore all of you just because I'm... um, I can't think of a good way to end that sentence that doesn't sound like fake modesty, so never mind. On the end of the sentence, I mean. Not the asking for your thoughts."
"Sigurd's disposition has proved to be unexpectedly passive for an apparent agent of the local gods, Jade. While I initially believed he would continually push you toward actions he considered to be 'good,' a threat posed by many Companions, this does not appear to be the case. I suspect the local divinity may have believed your apparent 'fall' was due to overwork or disillusionment, both of which would be helped by giving you a particularly relaxed Companion. That being said, I do not believe he should be given any significant concrete authority and it may even be worth publicly noting him as an allied agent instead of one of your subjects.
"Why?" you immediately ask. It's not as though you needed to take such precautions with Nanoha or Sidhe.
"His tendency to 'teach through adversity' is a recipe for diplomatic incidents. I encourage embracing your whims and the consequences of your own actions, but that relies on them being your actions, Daughter."
"Also, he's not merely undignified, but lazy," Mitra grumbles.
"You girls don't need to worry about being seen as undignified since your worst sins are still, like, cute and human and everything. He, on the other hand, is an animal. He'll leave shed fur on stuff, claw-marks on perfectly nice floors, and similar sins. People remember when someone brings something sloppy."
"...Doesn't Agneyastra have cleaning bots?" Nanoha asks, sounding as puzzled as you feel.
"Can't we just bring one of those along and have it clean up after him?"
"And really, us being disabled for less time is a pretty big deal," Sidhe adds, her sparkles apparently leaving with their usual inexplicable haste.
"Even if that's all we get from him, that still opens up a lot of options for shorter trips. I feel as though we could just drag him to one of this world's separate dimensions without switching planes entirely, but I'm not sure how willing he'd be to play along with that. Worst case scenario, we drop him on some world he can feel as though he's being productive on."
"Um. I guess that's kinda two in favor?" you hazard.
"Mitra, you had nothing but complaints, and Nanoha, I think you were agreeing?"
"Oh, I would like to bring him along," Nanoha quickly elaborates.
"I think he'll be a troublesome fuzzball, but sure, I guess lower downtimes is a good enough reason."
"I think he'll be more useful than for just that," you defend him.
"Like, I think that one Corruption plane might have dragons and if he can turn into one of those, that'd be pretty cool. Probably not, but I'm sure are some other neat creatures he could become. Buuuut anyway, since we've decided to bring him along anyway, I guess I'll start questioning them on what Karse and the plains are like? I could use a slightly better answer before we decide where to go."
You lean back against the nearest tree, adding Vanyel and Sigurd to your list of message recipients as you do so.
"Okay, so, Karse — oh, you can come along, Sigurd — and the Dhorisha Plains. I think I get that Karse is a religion-dominated theocracy with a side order of corruption, but what about the plains? I know the inhabitants are nomadic, nonmagical, and distrust foreign mages, but not a whole lot more than that."
Vanyel clears his ethereal throat of nonexistent junk.
:I can field this one. There are two major groups who follow the Star-eyed: the Shin'a'in, otherwise known as the People of the Plains, and the Tayledras, or Hawkbrothers. The Shin'a'in send new mages who don't become shamans to the Tayledras, a practice that is seen as a necessary evil. It's not that those particular individuals are distrusted, but that Kal'enel has much less freedom to rein in those who are not sworn to her service. If one of them were to go bad and aim for Urtho's ruined tower, there's not a whole lot she could do. In essence, the mission of the Tayledras is to purify lands corrupted by the last Cataclysm while the Shin'a'in protect the tools which would allow another one to occur.
:Now, while the Shin'a'in do possess perhaps the most impressive mortal horse breeds on the planet, they don't make much use of magic at all. The Tayledras do and harbor multiple pre-Cataclysm secrets passed down through the ages. Most of their members are capable of at least a little magic and all of their older settlements are built within environmentally controlled shelters from the surrounding-:
:Corrupted murder-kill-eat deathscapes,: Sigurd interrupts.
Rather than appearing irritated by the interruption, Vanyel flashes Sigurd a quick grin and continues.
:Quite. A quick rule of thumb for the Pelagirs Forest is that if you don't see something trying to kill you, that's because it's currently crawling up your ankle, slithering through the nearby underbrush, quietly dragging your helpless horse away, or busy chasing some other poor bastard. You really won't be able to interact with the Tayledras without some reliable way to introduce yourself; Sigurd himself would suffice, but in general, it's best to leave them alone. None of them will want to give up their Gifts.:
:They also have recurring problems with foreign mages seeking to attack them and steal their secrets, because again, pre-cataclysm knowledge. If you try to aimlessly wander through their territory, you have a disturbingly high chance of having one of some opportunistic Blood Adept attack you, and honestly, that's not a fight you're guaranteed to win. Best just to leave them alone, alright? Even if you do manage to find them, they won't be telling you anything.:
:And even then, they'll still give you a friendlier reception than Karse. Karse does technically have a king and aristocracy, but they're more of a vault of scapegoats for the priesthood to blame for problems and execute whenever something goes wrong. I imagine you could try visiting them and seeing what happens, but honestly, I'd expect demons to attack you in your beds at least once over the course of your visit. I imagine it wouldn't be the most relaxing experience for you.:
You think back to all the times you smashed Grimm for fun and decide not to comment. The occasional combat break
would actually be kinda fun, especially since your AIs
don't sleep. Rather than being torn apart, you could probably tear apart any demons sent with your bare hands.
"Jade smashes magical abominations for fun," Sidhe traitorously comments in a dry tone.
"That actually sounds right up her alley."
:...Technically, I have to accept that. I can't really go throwing stones on that front; they're just so wonderfully crunchy.:
[] Go to Karse.
-[] Specifically, their court. With a city full of people to search, the odds are pretty good that you'll find someone with an unused Adept-gift, right?
--[] Present yourselves as foreign followers of the God of Fire come to check up on other fire-followers. It's technically true.
-[] Travel through the countryside and stealthily search villages.
[] Head to the Dhorisha Plains.
[] Write-in
