Working from a phone is so dreadfully slow, but my old computer was apparently littered with viruses. Two hours and it's only 17% done purging them. ARGH!
Heh. What are you using?

And in the future Avira is a good anti-virus and firewall for free (make sure not to have two firewalls active at the same time), and malwarebytes for malware (ignore how it says it and Avira don't get along, that's only if you have Malwarebytes premium). Spyware Blaster is good for, well spyware. Get them at majorgeeks dot com, those guys are good. Just make sure to scan with both, Blaster is a blocker rather than a scanner, every couple of weeks and you should be golden.

I'm still sold on the "be a dragon" idea, if anyone has other arguments for or against that...

Really though, after everything we've been through, is it even possible for us to accumulate grief any other way than through use of our powers?

We need to wish for poison based cooking powers. It's what mom would have wanted.
And every time we use them we get flashbacks to our mom trying to kill us. Trauma Ho!

If we're still traumatized by it instead of in the "I can't even give a fuck" stage, then yup.

Exactly one month after your father died, she deliberately poisoned herself, you, and six other people. Four people, including your mother, died. You only managed to survive due to prompt medical attention and quite a large amount of luck.

You're not sure if you'll ever look at curry the same way again.

...her name wasn't 'Bianchi', was it?

My antivirus is fine now, it was "just" about six years out of date. But thank you for the suggestions; I'll keep them in mind.

I laughed, but it hurt a little.

No relation.

How about you go and find out? Trauma ho!

"- by becoming a red-hot Pepper Dragon with a pure capsaicin breath weapon!"

Maybe not.

Okay, this is getting kinda silly. Could I please get some feedback on the story proper? I'm managing to get more ratings on the backstory posts than the actual story itself. I'd like to know what I'm doing wrong with the story before we get too far into the quest.

Better I fix them now than have the problems fester. Unfortunately, I can't fix specific problems if I don't know what they are. (Help?)

Well, speaking for myself, I actually forget the ratings function is there alotta the time.

The backstory bits are complete in themselves, while story parts are necessarily open ended. That means you can end on a punch, which generates more pop.

WRT the actual vote that's open, how about this?

I'm not too terribly opposed to going to the meeting if she presses it, so adding a contingency to that effect isn't out of the question, but but what do the rest of you all think?

Edit: I am shocked to discover that this is a double post, with how fast the thread usually moves. Eh, I'll merge 'em in a minute.

And done.

Character sheet updated

You used to be happy and enthusastic. Each new day was bright and full of adventure. You didn't worry too much about long-term planning and just tackled each situation as it was presented to you.

"Used to be" being the key phrase. Watching your dad die changed you. Many of the activities you used to take pleasure in reminded you of your father; they no longer gave you any joy. Your friends quickly got tired of your eternal aura of depression and stopped inviting you to spend time with them.

Things only got worse when your mother tried to kill you both. Moving to the orphanage, and changing schools in the process, should have been a fresh start. It wasn't, not really. Somebody decided to spread word of what your mother had done and pointed to your blank expression as a sign that you were planning a repeat performance.

It was total nonsense, but it was nonsense they could believe all too easily. You became a social outcast within days of transferring.

Even when the other students weren't avoiding you, they still didn't want an outsider intruding. The same held true for the other teenagers at the orphanage. They had already formed their own social groups and weren't interested in any additions. Your halting attempts to interact with them were ignored, or worse, mocked.

It wasn't at all fair. Did they care? Nope.

"I wish you were my toy, to do with as I please."

wonder what that would do...

or even:

"I wish you would be my friend, who will always care about me and help me like a true friend would."
Kyubey does care! Friends manipulate one another all the time, don't they? They don't hurt each other, and telling us the lichbomb and the witch bomb would hurt.

After all, he's only giving us the power to protect ourselves from witches. That's a friendly thing, right? And friendship is a give-and-take relationship. He gives power and support, and he only asks that you do your part to protect others. Why, he even provides a convenient receptacle to dispose of grief seeds, to prevent them from hatching!

What if we wish to be able to do whatever we wanted? Should prevent options from being limited, allow us to achieve what we normally couldn't and is pretty red, right?

Lots of ways for that to be interpreted...lets you break human limits, makes people more likely to let a faux pas or rulebreaking slide, gives something like Freedom of Movement from D&D. Or just reality-warping, but too much for our potential. I'd buy it.

Is it ever clarified at all how the Kyubey are supposed to be averting entropy? It occurs to me that perpetuating the mage -> witches cycle may be the whole of their involvement, and they're counting the explosions etc. of magical battles as adding point sources of energy to the universe... Assuming they aren't just some kind of demon that thinks grief-filled souls are particularly tasty and are obscuring it with that kind of possibly-technically-correct justification without actually caring about it.

Such thoughts are probably a bit on the deep side for Jade as presented, though, especially when the PR spin has been overwhelmingly positive.

Or maybe they really are doing their calculated, emotionless best to do good, applying the principle of the good of the many over a few self-sacrificing heroines, and just don't understand why emotional life forms get so worked up about it. It's not like they're doing something bad, so why do the contracted magi keep grief spiraling when they find out? Better just to leave it unsaid unless they ask; they'll be further from falling to grief that way.

And we should wish to be a dragon as powerful as our potential will allow, to get around overwishing. Either that or the aforementioned good witch wish.
