We follow a young pokemon trainer just beginning on their journey. Will they become the next champion? Will they instead decide to pursue contests? Who knows? Only SV can decide.
Character Creation Part 1

AN: Found some time in my schedule, so I figured I would start a quest for the quarter.

Within the world, beautiful creatures reside. From the mythical Mew to the common Spearow, these beings have defined the land. Countless men and women travel the lands, training these beings. You are one such trainer, departing on such a journey. Residing in

[] Viridian City – The Gateway to the Indigo League, Viridian City is small but prestigious. With the very top gym in the region in the city, pokemon trainers from a host of cities gather here. As such, lower level trainers may struggle to find a good match, but those that overcome adversity can triumph well in such an environment. Starting Pokemon Options: Bulbasaur, Squirtle, Charmander, Pidgey, Spearow, Rattata, ???
[] Pewter City – Located between two very lush pokemon environments, the Viridian Forest and Mount Moon, Pewter City offers trainers a fair few pokemon to catch. Travel to Cerulean City has become somewhat famous takes to the aforementioned Mount Moon. While civilian roadways do exist, many trainers instead opt to travel through the mountain itself. A risky but very rewarding journey for those that manage to get through it. Starting Pokemon Options: Geodude, Paras, Zubat, Sandshrew, Caterpie, Weedle, Pidgey, ???
[] Cerulean City – The city at the base of a natural harbor, Cerulean City is a profitable port town, home to a wide variety of water pokemon. Home to one of the lower gyms, it is a good start for trainers, although most wind up having to traverse to backtrack at some point along their journey. Starting Pokemon Options: Magikarp, Poliwag, Goldeen, Krabby, Staryu, ???
[] Vermillion City – Home to an internal harbor, the city is widely diverse with visitors from other regions being common. Most trainers elect to take a ship to either Cerulean City or Pallet Town, but some trainers try and overcome the Vermillion Gym. It is rare, but some manage to overcome the hurdle that it represents. Starting Pokemon Options: Magikarp, Poliwag, Shellder, Horsea, ???
[] Lavender Town – The subject of myths to those less traveled. Lavender town is known for its gravesite of pokemon. A rather dreary attraction, which is only more muddled by the wide variety of ghost pokemon nearby. Nevertheless, a few trainers start from here with a ghost at their side. They may be rare, but they can be found. And such a pokemon does tip the scales of quite a few early gym battles. Starting Pokemon Options: Gastly, Cubone, Zubat, ???
[] Celadon City – The largest city in the Kanto Region, Celadon City is home to a fair few consumer industries. The variety of plant life and grass pokemon has only caused the city to lean further into its niche, and exports products such as perfume across the world. Trainers from here tend to be less used to the nomadic lifestyle due to their upbringing, but quite a few do come from here. Starting Pokemon Options: Magikarp, Poliwag, Slowpoke, ???
[] Fuchsia City – The entrance to the Safari Zone, Fuchsia makes quite a profit from allowing trainers to enter for a fee. Strictly limiting the number of pokemon that can be caught, the Zone is home to a teeming pokemon ecosystem. As such, pokemon trainers from here are some of the most at home on the road. Starting Pokemon Options: Nidoran, Nidorina, Paras, Vennonat, Exeggcute, Tangela, Scyther, Tauros, Slowpoke, ???
[] Saffron City – Hosting the Silph Corporation, Saffron City esports poke balls far and wide. A major metropolis, Saffron City is between several other major cities, and serves as an overland trade stopping point. Heightening its fame is a train line between it and Johto for trainers. Starting Pokemon Options: Bulbasaur, Squirtle, Charmander, Mankey, Machop, ???
[] Cinnabar Island – As an island, tourism is quite common here. In order to make the gym a more fighting obstacle to overcome, the current Gym leader has hidden the gym in some part of the island. One of the only gyms to do this, this has resulted in most trainers only attempting to overcome the gym at the very end of their journey. Instead, most people that start here travel to Cerulean City, with a few traveling to Pallet Town instead. Starting Pokemon Options: Charmander, Vulpix, Growlithe, Ponyta, ???
[] Write-in (Subject to GM veto)

Mechanics
Unlike my last quest, this one will have very few dice rolls. They will likely just come up during particularly difficult parts to write, such as in a clash between two attacks in which case I'll have a system set up or for random event rolls. However, there still needs to be some way to tell who is better, and I'll be using a system I saw in We Stand in Awe.

There will be levels for 7 main stats, and a set of levels for each attack, which shall be labeled under skills. The main stats are as follows:

Stamina - Ability to take hits and stay in the fight
Physicality - The ability to overpower opponents with strength and the like. What is used for moves like tackle.
Durability - The ability to resist damage
Special Attack - The ability to use one's nature offensively.
Special Defense - The ability to use one's nature defensively.
Aim - The ability to hit opponents at a distance.
Speed/Evasion - The ability to avoid attacks.

Here are the ranks I will be using, along with the XP needed to get to that rank.

Untrained – Completely new to it, rather poor.
Novice – Having worked on it for a few days. Somewhat lacking. (50 XP)
Adept – Having worked on it for a few weeks but nothing special. Decent. (200 XP)
Skilled – Quite a sight to see. Above average. (1000 XP)
Veteran – One of the top 10%. Very good. (2500 XP)
Master – One of the top 1%. (10000 XP)
Champion – Near the pinnacle. (25000 XP)
Legendary – The being to aspire to. (75000 XP)

Character Sheet
Pokémon

Primary Stats
  • Stamina - Adept (0/1000)
    • Dratini is as expected for a Pokémon that has yet to evolve.
  • Physicality - Skilled (0/2500)
    • Dratini is surprisingly strong for his size. His small frame belies his ability to apply force through his coils. Still, he is just a Dratini and so will struggle against higher level foes.
  • Durability - Adept (0/1000)
    • Dratini is as expected for a Pokémon that has yet to evolve.
  • Special Attack - Adept (0/1000)
    • Dratini is as expected for a Pokémon that has yet to evolve.
  • Special Defense - Adept (0/1000)
    • Dratini is as expected for a Pokémon that has yet to evolve.
  • Aim - Skilled (0/2500)
    • Dratini is able to consistently hit moving targets under normal circumstances. However, it is when he has to contend with rapid pressure that the accuracy dips. Still, this is more than some Pokémon ever achieve.
Moveset
  • Shed Skin - Adept (0/1000)
    • Like all Dratini, he is able to shed his skin. In doing so, he can shed off status conditions quickly and heal minor injuries. However, this cannot be done more than once in a battle.
  • Wrap - Adept (0/1000)
    • Using his coils, Dratini can entrap foes in them before squeezing hard. Combined with his strength, it can be quite effective. Still, he simply knows the basics of this move which is already good enough for most.
  • Thunder Wave - Novice (0/200)
    • While Dratini is able to unleash this move, it is one of his worst. It takes time to unleash, and leaves him vulnerable to attacks. With practice, this will likely be dealt with however.
  • Water Gun - Skilled (0/2500)
    • Dratini has become quite good at using water gun. With a great deal of practice, mostly while playing with Violet, Dratini has learned to cut down the time it takes him to unleash this burst of water. Additionally, he also manages to modulate it so that it can be stronger but slower or weaker but faster if the situation depends on it.
Other Stats
  • Showmanship - Adept (0/1000)
    • Dratini greatly enjoys being the center of attention. With Violet, he enjoys being fed and playing. His playdates with her have led to him learning what exactly looks pretty and what impresses people the most. However, his lack of experience does mean he does not show the same professionality that other Pokémon in contests will display

Well, seems we have a three-way tie. I will say that I really like the plans being made, and honestly already sketched out a few scenarios in my head for each one. I'll be leaving the vote open for a while. No idea when I'll close it, but having a tie is always confusing for me. Although if I do have a tie in the end, I'll just pick the one I like best.

Let's give this a try.

[X]Plan Red
-[X] Viridian City
-[X] Man
-[X] Red
-[X] Socially shy
-[X] Quick

Right, so this plan is giving the trainer a very good jumping-off point. The starters maybe a bit generic, but they grow very powerful in time. Socially Shy is a pretty ok flaw, giving more credence of caring for his pokemon then other trainers. As for Quick, well I looked up CK2 traits due to the ones provided not properly giving the ability of the character this represents.

Alright, I'm going to call the vote here. Shrinking Violet wins. Before I start writing since I have free time today, here's the mystery pokemon for each city and the requirements to have a chance to get that option:

Viridian City - Pikachu. Requires Driven or Headstrong
Pewter City - Cleffa. Requires Caring.
Cerulean City - Tentacool. Requires Intelligent.
Vermillion City - Magnemite. Requires Quick to Act.
Lavender Town - Mr Mime. Requires Driven and Headstrong.
Celadon City - Dratini. Requires Perceptive.
Fuschia City - Rhyhorn. Requires Intelligent or Driven.
Saffron City - Elekid. Requires Caring or Forgetful.
Cinnabar Island - Magby. Requires Headstrong or Forgetful.

So you have the option to have Dratini as your starter.

Oh, missed the vote, too bad.
Well, I'm okay with the result.

Does that mean we are the pokémon?

After reading what I wrote, it makes me really glad I've gotten a Beta to read my stuff before I post it. Even if they started screaming at some points while looking over the update. :V

More seriously, you're going to be the trainer, I just wrote really bad grammar.

Character Creation Part 2
AN: And it is finally written. Special thanks to my roommate who beta'd this for me. Hopefully, this update will be enjoyable to read.

[X] Plan Shrinking Violet
-[X] Celadon City – The largest city in the Kanto Region, Celadon City is home to a fair few consumer industries. The variety of plant life and grass Pokémon has only caused the city to lean further into its niche, and exports products such as perfume across the world. Trainers from here tend to be less used to the nomadic lifestyle due to their upbringing, but quite a few do come from here. Starting Pokémon Options: Magikarp, Poliwag, SlowPoké, ???

-[X] Violet
-[X] Socially shy (GM Favorite ;) )
-[X] Perceptive

Violet was a quiet child. Some days, she would say just one or two words. Her parents worried and fretted with a simple "good morning" considered a victory. For years, they tried to get her to open up, and to some extent, it worked.

Playdates were arranged. Violet, however, didn't enjoy them. The first impression was always so important. She saw it in how they talked. Every time someone stumbled over their words, Violet felt second-hand anxiety. She could barely imagine how it would feel if she was in their place. No, it was better to stay quiet on the sidelines. That way, she would never experience such a thing.

Her silence wasn't taken well by other kids. Whether they thought she was ignoring them, or just disliked them, it just wasn't enjoyable for the other children. Violet picked up on this quickly, which only amplified her desire to avoid talking to other people. Her parents didn't respect her wishes on this and took her to meet family friends whenever they could, hoping for someone to crack their daughter's shell.

Violet was introduced to a young girl by her parents. Hiding a glance, Violet saw a girl with a short haircut and shorts, with a striking orange shirt. The girl with the orange shirt smiled a little before giving an enthusiastic greeting. "Hi, I'm Liana. Do you want to play basketball with me?" She then pointed to a small hoop in the backyard expecting Violet to give some response. Instead, Violet just remained silent. Her eyes drifted to the hoop before returning to the floor. The smile on Liana faded. "You know, the game where you throw the ball into the hoop."

Violet didn't move for a moment before shaking her head slightly. The girl with the orange shirt spent a few minutes trying to find something that the two would enjoy, but each time, Violet either shook her head, or did nothing at all. Then, Liana's patience wore thin, and she picked up the ball and started throwing it into the hoop. Violet just sat down, occasionally looking at Liana who was trying to have fun on a playdate she wasn't enjoying.

The cycle repeated again and again. Violet would speak one or two words at most, and the other kids would grow bored. When she was eight, she had another playdate, this time with a kid named Tetsuya.

There was, however, something different about this one.

Violet entered the room, hunched over, trying to avoid notice, a stark contrast to Tetsuya who practically leaped around the room, a confident smile on his lips. The little ball of energy jumped over a footrest, his feet just barely missing the edge, before landing and extending a hand. "Hi! I'm Tetsuya!"

Violet's gaze was focused on a particularly interesting part of the floor where three floorboards met. But Tetsuya's voice broke her trance and Violet glanced up before speaking in a sotto voice. "Violet."

Violet limply held her arm out, which Tetsuya grasped, giving it a light shake. "Great to meet you." Taking a step back, he turned the motion into a spin which ended in a bow. Smirking, Tetsuya flourished his hand towards the living room and the sliding door that led to the backyard. "Now then, what would you like to do?"

Violet froze up. Tetsuya just pretended that the silence that followed was normal. The only sound was the ticking of the clock, tick, tick, tick. As the ticks grew deafening, Violet struggled to respond. She hated introductions. If she messed this up, what would Tetsuya think? Would he hate her? Would her parents be disappointed? So many things could go wrong. She wanted to stay quiet and not respond. It was what she always did, but right now, that wouldn't work. Staying silent would leave a bad first impression. Exactly what she wanted to avoid. Her mind raced to find a solution until the ticks grew far too loud for her to ignore.

Then, she shrugged, avoiding eye contact the entire time, but Tetsuya didn't seem bothered. "Well then, when all else fails, TV it is." Motioning towards the couch, he grabbed the first seat and sprawled out, taking up most of the couch, quite a bit of space for a small child. Violet, in contrast, demurely sat on the opposite end of the couch. Lifting up her legs, she grabbed her shins with her arms and held herself tight, taking up as little space as possible.

"What do you want to watch?" Tetsuya intentionally stared at the TV, wanting to hear a verbal response.

Violet just hunched over. The air seemed heavy. Quietly, as if she were speaking to herself, she responded "Pokémon?"

Tetsuya paused, trying to think what that meant. Documentaries? Battles? Contests? So many options with nothing to narrow it down further. But the Conference Battles were on, and with no better choices, he changed the channel.

"Conference battles it is!" A moment later, the TV display changed to a Pokémon battle between a Victreebel and a Lapras. The field was coated in a glistening sheen, droplets of water trailing along the destroyed rocks. The two Pokemon stood on opposite sides, with Lapras sitting in a puddle of water beneath her flippers. Cracks could be seen along her back, with her weight shifted onto the right side of her body. A beep was heard, signaling a resumption of the bout.

Victreebel shot out two vines, each of which grabbed ahold of rocks and both sides of Lapras. Using them to catapult itself forward, the grass type blurred as he slammed into Lapras snout. With a cry of pain, she turned, presenting her armored shell to the Victreebel. Without hesitation, the grass type slammed its bulk into it, pushing Lapras back slightly. Digging into the ground with her flippers, the water type braced while her mouth opened and closed, with a soothing melody dancing over the field. Tetsuya took this all in and leaned forward as if to get closer to the action. "So, who do you think will win?"

Outwardly, Violet didn't react at first, but she peeked out from behind her knees. Lapras had clearly been in previous bouts, while Victreebel was both fresh and had a significant type advantage, there was another detail that appeared in the corner of the screen irregularly. Tightening her arms, she spoke another word, bringing her total up to three. "Lapras."

Tetsuya looked over, intrigued by her answer. "But Victreebel is a grass type, and Lapras is already hurt." Violet didn't meet his gaze, instead brushing the hair off her face. Realizing that Violet wouldn't respond unless he asked a direct question, Tetsuya spoke up again. "Was it because Victreebel's strategy has issues?" Violet shook her head. "Did you guess?" A pause, before another head shake. "Then how?"

Violet shrunk in on herself while Tetsuya gazed at the screen, trying to find the reason why Lapras would win. He could see ways to counter Victreebel's strategy. Substituting another Pokémon or having Lapras unleash an ice beam, but that wasn't what Violet was seeing. Then, as Victreebel continued to slowly whittle away at Lapras, the water Pokémon's move came to fruition. Lapras' song began its finale sapping Victreebel's energy before the grass type fell to the ground- dead asleep. In the quietest of voices, Violet whispered. "Lapras beat three Pokémon before this."

The Victreebel was withdrawn by its trainer, as the announcers rattled off the remaining Pokémon for each side. A screen was displayed, with Lapras and five Poké balls on one side. On the other were four Pokémon with Xs on top of them and two Poké balls. "How did you know that? They never said anything during the show." Trying to think of an explanation, Tetsuya began to rewind the video before Violet spoke up.

"Pause." On instinct, Tetsuya paused the channel before beginning to scan the screen. Then, he found it. At the top of the screen was a billboard in the stadium, which displayed what Pokemon had been deployed.

Tetsuya let out a little laugh. "I can't believe you noticed that." Violet fretted, worried she had made Tetsuya jealous or annoyed, but the boy extending an arm. "Well done, usually I'm the guy that surprises others."

Violet took the hand, and this time, her grip was slightly stronger than before. Then, she gave a slight smile, which was just barely visible above her knees.

The day continued like this, with the two trying to predict which Pokémon would win their respective battles. Quite a few of their predictions were wrong, but the ones that were right brought them tremendous joy. Tetsuya would give explanations for each of his predictions, while Violet would just say the Pokémon's name if at all. Tetsuya enjoyed it greatly, the competition was fun, even if he did almost all of the talking, and so, when Violet left, he asked his parents if he could see her again.

But he didn't even have to ask, for a week later, Violet walked down to breakfast. Quietly eating her food, she gave her parents one or two-word responses, before suddenly speaking. "Can I see Tetsuya again?"

Her parents arranged another playdate for the next day, allowing a friendship that would continue for years to form. The two grew up together, with Violet and Tetsuya meeting every week. Sometimes multiple times in one. Violet enjoyed these days. She didn't have to talk much, and Tetsuya wouldn't press her. Even if he had quite a few friends, Tetsuya always found time for Violet. Even if she talked the least of everyone he knew, she always managed to surprise him with something she noticed. Whether it was something on the TV or something on their homework, very few things slipped past her notice.

Violet likely never would have been a Pokémon trainer if it were not for

[] Poliwag - Trying to get their daughter to open up, Violet's parents gave her a young Poliwag to raise. Ever since then, the two have been nearly inseparable.
[] Slowpoke - A water/psychic Pokémon Violet's parents bought. Expecting that she would get along with the quiet Slowpoke, they settled upon it.
[] [Requires Perceptive] Dratini - One day, while at the beach. Violet spotted a strange ripple in the water, and when she took a closer look, a small Dratini was there, looking at her with adorable eyes. Thus, a bond that would take them across the world was born.

I want Dratini/Dragonair, but I don't want Dragonite.

Of course we choose Dratini! Who would say no to a Pseudo-legendary?

More seriously, you're going to be the trainer, I just wrote really bad grammar.
Well, you could always edit it then.

To other kids, her silence wasn't taken well.
By other kids

The next two aren't technically wrong, but sound weird.

Someone needs to pay more attention in trainer school. :V

Is that even a question?
(Be careful with the [] though, the vote tally may see it as a task and throw off your count.)

Agreed.

In honor of the manga's Poliwrath- and how amusing it would look for the demure Violet to have a hulking starter.
