Hundred Night Blade (A Magical Girl Quest)

Hiya.

Since the puzzle failed so spectacularly (really sorry about that) we're gonna be changing up the votes.

[] Skip the puzzle
[] Keep attempting to try it.
-[] Input answer here

I'll tell you the answer if you chose to skip it so don't worry.

[X] Keep Attempting to try it
-[X] The Horn needs to stop playing, so beat it down until it goes silent! The Saxophone, Trumpet, and Trombone all need to be playing specific series of notes, so I'll try and get them to line up with the menu!
--[X] Hit the Saxophone until it is playing three quarter notes, then resting on the fourth beat. If it stops playing that from getting hit again, hit it until it playing the afore mentioned series of notes.
--[X] Hit the Trumpet until it is playing on the second half of each eighth of a beat. If it stops playing that from getting hit again, hit it until it playing the afore mentioned series of notes.
--[X] Hit the Trombone until it is playing on the first and second beats out of every four. If it stops playing that from getting hit again, hit it until it playing the afore mentioned series of notes.

The journey is not done, until the destination is surpassed.

Here, let me answer for Daze:

Daze: "Still too specific cat."

Pretty sure we've already been told that the instruments alternate between two sets of notes/beats/whatever. And that killing them makes them have nothing.

If you'd rather, I could write out a vote for them systematically trying all 81 different combinations of the various tunes being played.
Because there are three states, melody/harmony/dead, and 3^4=81.

Edit: Or, I could write out a vote for killing the Horn and then trying out all eight possible combinations of the three remaining instruments, and make a vague attempt at using the information provided.
Edit 2: I'm also not seeing any votes that are not in support of this one.

Fuck it, QM fiat. Puzzle was a bad idea and we're skipping it.

(This is a whole new low for me really)

That being said. Here's a quick overview of the puzzle's solution. Spoiler alert: It's bad.

Let's get this out of the way first, you wouldn't have been able to solve the puzzle without a background in music. That seems obvious when I say it outloud but I've got like four years of experience with Guitar and my beta is an active chorus goer. It kinda slipped our mind. Whoops?

So the goal of this puzzle was to find out which instrument had the song piece you needed. In this case, the theme for Ska was "Harmony without Melody" while the classical floor was "Melody without Harmony". Out of the four brass instruments, one of them had the necessary piece and the menu would tell you which one. Now let's take a look at it.

TODAY'S MENU: SKA

Special offer for every fourth customer!

Key: C

Time: 4:4

Saxophone: (1+3+5) = 4

Trumpet: 8 - 8 = 16

Trombone: 4 + 4 = 2

Horn: REST

We'll go over the obvious answer first. The Horn? Silence it. How? Kill it. Beat the ever loving shit out of it until it can never play again.

Now as some players have figured out, the numbers for Trumpet and Trombone aren't numbers but rather notes. Eighth note minus Eighth note equals sixteenth note, quarter note plus quarter note equals half note, you get the picture. This is going to be relevant in a bit but only after we discuss what the hell is up with the Saxophone.

So to begin with that, need to go over what a harmony is. Basically, a harmony is when you combine a couple of notes and play them at the same time to create a pleasing sound. I put the Saxophone numbers in parentheses to try and communicate these were meant to be played at the same time. Meanwhile a melody is just a series of notes played in a sequence. If this is setting off alarm bells in your head, you probably know where this is going. (1+3+5), what could that mean? Well it's not eighth notes or quarter notes, but rather it's the set off notes needed to play a triad or three notes played at the same time. The root note, third note, and fifth note, all played together to create a C chord. Aka, a harmony.

That's right. The Saxophone was the correct instrument here.

In conclusion, what the menu was trying to convey and the answer to the puzzle is...

Saxophone: Harmony.

Trumpet: Melody.

Trombone: Melody.

Horn: Dead.

And that's basically the puzzle in a nutshell. Feel free to be mad at me, I deserve it.

I'm going to summarize my feeling on this in one sentence:
Clever puzzle, neat idea, wrong medium for implementation.

Edit: Daze also provided us the Brass Stats in Discord. Here is the current list of enemy stats in the ensemble.

Apologies for the double posting. Anyway, wanted to separate these thoughts from the post reflecting on the puzzle.

At the moment, Demon Blade would lose a fight against the Brass if she didn't Arts, due to their significantly great health pool. Since the only other floors have singular, even tougher foes, here is my personal choice for an experience plan using our remaining 74 experience from the last segment, whenever Daze opens up exp spending again.

[] Exp Plan: The Fire Burns With Hunger (70 exp)
-[] Emblaze The Fire Level 3->4
-[] Muramasa's Blade Level 4->5

300 Base Resilience and 100 Magic Modifier with 250 base damage let's Demon Blade win a battle of attrition against any single instrument so far, and getting Muramasa's Blade up to level 5 gives a common threshold for new or upgraded abilities on weapons.

Another option would be:

[] Exp Plan: Forgotten Wax (70 exp)
-[] Purchase Missing Moment
-[] Mold The Wax Level 2->3

Getting Demon Blade an actual spell, even with only one ApT to use it (grumblegrumble) would be another tool in her and Momohime's arsenal, but it kinda locks out options other than bumping up her health, which does not come with a full heal. There's a chance it could help Demon Blade's endurance though, so it's not terrible.

Hiya everybody! So if you haven't already guessed it yet I gotta rejigger how everything's going to account for my stupid mistakes. Which means we're going with another vote!

Good news is I can in fact confirm this trial has no more puzzles, thank god.

The bad news is BOSS FIGHT TIME.

You have two options here, you can either go to the third floor for a bonus boss or you could go to the seventh floor for the big bad main boss. You could also use the SUPER DUPER TOILET ART to take out the bonus boss before heading to floor seven but remember, that would mean Hanako is busy for the rest of the trial!

[] Floor Seven - ???
[] Floor Three - Jazz
-[] Use the SUPER DUPER TOILET ART to take him out

Good luck!

[X] Floor Seven - ???
Let's focus on the goal and go straight to the main boss.

Also as a note to the QM, please make sure any important posts, such as votes, have enough words in them to trigger alerts. I missed the post about whether to skip the puzzle or not as well as the post giving the answer to the puzzle since both were too short. I believe a post needs at least 100 words and things in spoilers don't count.

Roger roger. Is that how that works? I've been on this site for years and it's still a mystery to me.

[X] Floor Three - Jazz

Bonus boss? Bonus Boss. And let's not cheese it. I believe in Momohime and Demon Blade.

[X] Exp Plan: Power As Plot Demands
- [X] Purchase Missing Moment (50 exp)

... The entire point of this magical girl system is to exploit and cheese as hard as you can.
Be that as it may, and I'm not denying it, Kei and Hanako are not Magical Girls. Hanako is what let's Kei do his things without having to spend health on Deathly Bound, and locking him out of using Hanako just to take down a boss more easily? And likely putting Kei below where he can safely activate Deathly Bound? No, that's not a good team move. Working with what we know now, while I believe that we can take the Bonus Boss, I don't agree with using the super duper toilet art.

Oh, that's what you meant by cheese.

I wouldn't call that cheese, that's just weighing resources, "Is it worth not having them later t auto-defeat this boss? Y/N" and then go on from there.
