"Alright class, welcome to Human History 168, History of the Human Sphere from 5000 CE to 8000 CE. As you can probably guess, this year-long class mostly focuses on the Long War era and will not go particularly in depth. As well, due to the nature of human space travel during this era and the technology of the Terran Confederacy and Centauri Union, several key individuals will make repeated appearances in this course. So don't be surprised if someone that hasn't been mentioned in a millennium of history suddenly reappears. However, as you all should have taken Human History 136, History of the Third Age of the Human Sphere this should come as no surprise, especially after covering the Great Arks and City-Ships of the Third Age.

"As your previous professors probably told you, these vessels, particularly the USS Odyssey and FRS Liberty which will be redesignated the CWS Odyssey and UCV Liberty respectively, will play a pivotal role in the Early and Late-Middle periods of the Long War. Yes, you will have to sit through another couple of chapters about the Odyssey and Liberty trying to destroy each other. No, they will not be a major focus. If you wanted to learn more about the history and culture of Human Ark ships and City ships, then you should have applied for Human History 217. They love to talk about those things over there.

"Other notables to keep in the back of your heads are the Alexander and Jiang families. While both the Terran Confederacy and Centauri Union were republics without inheriting successors, both families would see their descendants in major seats of power regularly. Various names from the Great Ships will also make appearances.

"By the end of this class, you should know how the modern geography of the Human Sphere came to be, the social and cultural consequences of the Long War, and the effects on Human technological advancement. There will be a short chapter covering the catalyst of the War, however it is almost certain that the given casus belli was simply an excuse to initiate the anticipated war between the two Human hyperpowers. There will also be a couple of chapters on the various forms of FTL developed in the Human Sphere circa 7600 CE and their impact on the War and beyond.

"Alright, with the overview done let's get into your syllabus for the class..."
