Almost all of them, at least. While you understand the need to learn everything you can to be better prepared for your future role, you also know that there are things that you can't simply learn from a tutor. This is what you explain to Lady Maribelle when you announce her you won't have the time to attend some of her lessons, trusting in the fact that attending the regency council will be a way to learn in itself. The noblewoman clearly disapproves, muttering something about trying to run before learning to walk, but agrees that those decisions are yours to make. Unfortunately for you, she seems perfectly able to display her displeasure by working you to the bone in the classes you still follow with her.

You also meet two new tutors. Sir Duncan, a retired officer who served during the plegian war led by your grandfather, is a tall and imposing man despite his age, his grey hair and eyes giving him an almost steely appearance. His introduction to the art of warfare is solid enough, as far as you can tell, but after being tutored by the late Grandmaster, he has a tough act to follow. The first lessons are mostly about familiarizing with each other, as he tries to gauge what you already know and consequently adjust. You can't pretend you made tremendous progress so far, but you're willing to give it some time.

You're a bit more dubious toward your new finance teacher. Lord Harrowmont isn't unknowledgeable as far as you can tell, and he comes from a pretty distinguished family, but you're not sure you like the way he constantly seems to seek your approbation. Future Exalt or not, he is supposed to be your teacher, and push you hard if needs be, but you suspect he'd be too busy making a misguided attempt to please you to do that. You try to broach the subject with him, and he immediately approves and praise your wisdom in effusive terms. ... Yeah, you're not sure about this.

Also economics are incredibly boring to you. But that's another problem. At least you think you're beginning to make some sense of it.

Your reasons for announcing to Sir Johannes that you won't attend his lessons, possibly permanently, are rather different. Simply put, the past six months with him simply didn't seem to bring much progress, and you have reasons to suspect more time won't help in this matter. You can't blame your instructor for making the attempt, but swordsmanship is simply a domain that you're taking too seriously to stay idle. He takes the news relatively well - you even think he's a little relieved - as you go seek someone you know will be more suitable.

Lon'qu seems glad enough to see you - for someone that never looks happy at least - but you can tell his experience in Plegia still haunts him. He seems even more silent than usual, often lost in his own thoughts. Is he reliving the past battles, or trying to figure out where to go from there? You have a hard time telling. After a couple of weeks, you decide to enlist some help: namely his son, also known as your cousin. Owain is unusually solemn when you talk to him about his father, having apparently noticed the same thing - and presumably more. It isn't hard to convince him to join your efforts: he seems as eager to pursue his training than you. Was it always the case or did the recent events provide a new motivation? You're not quite sure

The Chon'sin, turned Feroxi, turned Ylissean swordsman seems surprised to see the both of you the next day but the approach seems to give results. Owain's apparent sloppiness is enough to rile him up (in fact you're beginning to suspect that at least a few of the errors your cousin displays in his stance were made on purpose in order to get a reaction) while your eagerness keeps him engaged. Slowly but surely, you're beginning to make progress once again, and your teacher seems to be more and more like himself once again.

There is another person both you and your cousin are worried for, however. From what you saw, your sister is in a dark place right now, and you're not entirely sure how to help. Well, wisely points out Owain, that's what the Justice Cabal is for! However, when the two of you come to meet Cynthia for an 'emergency meeting of heroes', all you get is a weak smile and a "sorry guys, maybe next time?"

This time you're seriously worried, and you can tell Owain is too. "What? But never missed a Justice Cabal meeting before! Even that time when you had a fever and mom ordered you to stay in bed!" His tirade is met with a small shrug. Gods, she looks so tired. Part of you wants to leave her be for now and let her rest. Yet you can't help but feel like that would be a mistake. Even your cousin's mask of bravado is gone, his face expressing naked concern instead.

"Remember when we started it? You told be you wanted to be a great hero. Is... is that still what you want?"

Your heart drops when you see Cynthia avoiding your eyes. "I-I did. But..." A sharp breath. "Dad was a true hero. And I know... I know you'll be one too, Lucy."

She looks at you, and you can see the tears. "You told me it was... 'to stand where other breaks'... something like that? But now I think... I think I can't. I... when dad died, you... stayed? Made a speech, and all. I didn't really hear it, but... I know I couldn't have. So... when I think of the times I said that... that... It feels... wrong, you know?" The words are barely whispered now. "I'm not even sure I want to be a hero anymore."

Chapter 2-18: Changes in the air (winter 2623)
[X] "I understand Cynthia and it's okay. People like that, the ones who, as you so aptly said, stand where others break are rare. It's a very rare person who can be a Hero. But there are also little-h heroes as well, still rare and still impactful in their own, sometimes very quiet, ways. I've done that as well, helping at the church. I wasn't the Hero of an entire nation then, I was a hero to whoever was hurt then and there and needed help. Every single day I was a hero to someone."

It hurts. Seeing your sister so miserable like that. The death of Father certainly was the last straw, but you can tell those feelings are older. It's a different fear than the one you grew up with, but no less potent. You want to blame yourself for not seeing sooner, but that can wait. Right now, there's something you must do. Stepping forward, you embrace your sister into a tight hug.

"L-Lucy!"
"Shh. It's okay. I understand. You really thought about it for a long time, didn't you?"

The only answer is a small sniffle, and you feel her head nestling on your shoulder. Behind you, you can hear Owain stepping back a little, giving you space.

"You know... there are a lot of kind of heroes. The ones dad was... the ones I'm trying to be... They're rare, but they're not the only ones." Cynthia shifts a bit in your arms, but remain silent, letting you press on. "There are lots of ways to be a hero. It's not always the ones people talk or write books about either. And you can be a hero for just a few people at a time as well. You know how I help at the shrine sometimes?" The small nod you feel tells you Cynthia is all ears. "In those moment, you can be the hero of just a few. Of those who needed help here and there."

"But" your sister protests "that shows you can be both! I'm not like you! I'm scared of blood, so I can't..."

"Mmm. Do you think you've never been the hero of someone, Cynthia?" Once again, a nod. You can tell she's trying her hardest not to cry, and is probably not entirely successful given your wet shoulder. Not that you blame her, you can feel the tears building up too. "You've been mine."

That gets a reaction. For the first time since you held her, Cynthia raises her head, her eyes meeting yours. "I have?" You can read the confusion on her face.

For a moment, your mind takes you back to the night with the assassin, but that's not what you want to focus upon. "Of course. There were... a lot of times... were I was scared. Terrified to the bone until I couldn't even breath anymore. I know what it is to have a voice whispering in your ear telling you to give up. And in those moments, you were often the one to help me back."

"But- no! I did nothing! You're the one always helping me!"

You gently shake your head, briefly noticing that you too have started crying. No matter. "You did help me. With a smile, with a hug... You helped me facing my fear. You were my hero those times."

Your sister still seems like she can't quite believe it. "I... I know you told me you were scared sometimes, but... I kinda thought you were l-lying. To make me feel better, you know?"

You can't quite hold back a chuckle. You can remember having thinking the same thing about your father once. And you find that you can remember his words that day perfectly. Somehow, the memory doesn't hurt right now.

"I wasn't lying. Even heroes are scared all the time. Dad was, I am, and I'm sure those you read about were too. So now, I'm going to ask you something." Your sister nods. "I know it's hard, but I want you to listen to that fear. To learn from it. And to not let it rule you. You don't have to be a hero if you really don't want to anymore. Don't do things because you think it'll make me or mom happy, or because dad would have liked it.Whatever you decide, I'll help you, I promise. But don't give up on your dreams just because you're afraid. Don't let it rob you of your smile. Remember, I love you, no matter what."

Those words seem to break what little control Cynthia kept. Desperately clutching to you, your sister starts bawling into your tunic, and it isn't long before you join her, your head resting on her own. "I promise!" she manage between two sobs. "I love you too! I'll try! I-"

"Shh. It's okay. You can take your time." You smile through your own tears. "Right now... let's just... stay like this for a bit."

And so you do, your blue hair tangled together as you comfort each other. Somehow, you think you might have needed something like this almost as much as your sister. Those last weeks... have been horrible. But maybe for the first time, you don't feel like it's a burden you carry alone anymore, and you hope Cynthia feels the same. You don't know how long you stay like this. At some point, you remember your cousin, and as you turn around to apologize to him, all you find is a note left behind. 'Due to the dark curse of Akalanor, hero training has been postponed to next week. Rest well.". You can't help but smile at that, and even Cynthia manages to chuckle. The sound is enough to make your heart soar.

The next time you and Owain come to her, she joins you without hesitation. She's still a bit more subdued than usual, her smiles a bit more hesitant than before. You can tell that she is trying hard to sort through her feelings at her own pace. That's not something you can rush. But when Owain manages to make her laugh out loud through his antics, or when she simply comes to your side and silently rest her head on your shoulder, you know she'll get through this. You're sure of it.

The Justice Cabal isn't the only friendly gathering you attend, though. Your meetings with Kjelle and Severa might be less playful, but you're just as eager to attend them. Exchanging pointers with Kjelle on training regimen proves to be enlightening - from what you hear, it seems like Sully's workouts are eerily similar to what Sir Frederick put you through. And sparring with her is always a challenge - even though you think your technique is better than her, the fact that she never slows down ever make for intense training sessions.​

Also spears are definitely a pain to deal with.

But during those weeks, the two of you are mostly focused on helping Severa. It only makes sense, given the fact she started her training a bit later than you. So you and Kjelle decide to help her the best way the both of you know: by following the trusted recipes of Frederick and Sully. By the end of the first week, Severa called you both names that you're pretty sure Cordelia would strongly disapprove off, and you don't think the ever-polite Stahl would have taught her that either. You think Gregor is rubbing off on her. Still she soldiers on, kicking and screaming all the way. By the end of winter, you can tell her physical condition as well as her skills with a sword have noticeably improved. And you can tell she isn't the kind of person to not see things through.

While those moments spent training with friends are great, you're also acutely aware that there are a lot of things your role will ask of you. As such, you make a point of attending the newly formed Regency Council. Until your coronation as Exalt, Ylisse is under the rule of the spouse of the late Exalt, namely your mother; the closest blood relative when one is available, meaning aunt Lissa, and the representatives of the four major dukedoms of Ylisse. Fortunately, the time spent in the previous councils held by your father mean none are completely unknown to you. Lord Themis is probably the one you're the most acquainted with; Maribelle's father have been a regular figure in your father's meetings, and the fact that his lands are under direct threat from a Plegian invasion seems to have increased his work rate despite his age. Duke Lurelin is the younger of the four - though still a few years older than Aunt Lissa - and possibly the richer, his eastern lands being safe from invasion and open to sea trade. Lady Arnelle southern possessions would be in the same situation if not for the constant raids from Plegian warships - as a silver lining, it seems to have turned her into a naval specialist of some repute. And finally, Lord Karan, keeper of the northern borders, and who was instrumental in the making of a first alliance with Regna Ferox, before your father renewed it. All of them show no surprise at seeing you join them, addressing their condolences and offering assistance if need be.

They are however a bit more surprised to see you come in the company of Yarne. Convincing the taguel had not been an easy task, your friend almost having a panic attack when you shared your plans with him. After hours of cajoling and reassurances, he eventually relented, but it's clear that his instincts are screaming at him to hide under the table. You're sorry to put him on the spot like that, but you hope that those meetings can help him fight his nervousness, and since he manifested his intentions of helping you when he could, you figured this should be a nice, non-threatening way to start.

You kind of forgot politics could be pretty threatening in their own ways.

At the very least, there is no time to take things slowly. All thoughts are on the war effort. How to feed the standing army, which provinces can afford to mobilize more men to compensate for the recent losses, how to compensate for the lack of manpower... Week after week, new difficulties seem to crop up. You often have trouble to follow - though you do try your best, and your mother and aunt are always willing to talk to you afterward to answer the question you still might have - so you can imagine how lost Yarne must be. Still, he keeps accepting to escort you, so that must mean something, right?

His presence, though, seems oddly appropriate when an unexpected topic is brought before the council. You can hear his short gasp when Frederick is announced to come before them. The knight appearance is once again immaculate, but his face still seem haunted. And when he offers his resignation as Protector of the Royal Family, you're not the only one being surprised. Still his voice is calm as he exposes his reasons.

"Two Exalts already died on my watch. The royal princesses could have met the same fate not so long ago. And I do not believe a man who was unable to protect his own family should be trusted in such an important role."

You desperately want to protest, but you're not sure how. He doesn't intend to retire from service, he reassures. He would appreciate the opportunity to be given a command on the frontlines - you can feel Yarne's shudder at the thought - but would understand if he was tasked with an instructor position instead. When asked about who could replace him in his previous role, he puts forward Cordelia's name, though he does not doubt several Shepherd could be suited for the position.

Lissa is adamantly against the idea. Your mother, though, believe you are the one who should have the final say on it - after all, you are the Exalt-to-be.

If Yarne had trouble fitting in on the regency council, Laurent seems to have no such problem when you invite him to the war meetings. You two studied under Robin, after all, it only seemed natural for him to be there at your side. Miriel's son remain silent for the most part, but you can see him paying constant attention to the matters at hand, no doubt trying to figure how to apply his lessons to the current situation. Right now there is little he - and you - can do beside learning, though.

As for the war itself, Ylisse seems safe... for now. While many feared an immediate invasion following the death of the Exalt and the retreat of the army, it seems Plegia too was unable or unwilling to press forward. Only small bands of raiders crossed the mountain range during the fall, and the coming of winter make it all the more difficult. Still, those small bands proves to be pretty elusive and have an alarming knack to slip through the lines of a tired and demoralized Ylissean army, leaving them free to terrorize the countryside.

The threat is answered by the pegasus knights. Your mother, alongside Aunt Cordelia, lead several sorties to repel the marauders. You know enough about tactics to realize this comes with serious risks - the pegasi are few in numbers, and have to operate entirely unsupported from the rest of the army. Each time you see your mother leave Ylisstol, you do your best to convince yourself that this won't be the last time you see her. Still, you're proud of her, and you know Cynthia is too, despite that constant fear. And fortunately, winters end without the worst coming to pass. The knowledge of having the queen-regent leading the charge to protect Ylisse's citizen is even a small boon for the morale of the troops - at this point, every bit helps.

At the very least, the army is given enough time to reorganize and refill their ranks. Still, there is a fear that when the Plegian offensive come - and it will come, there is no doubt about that - their Risen-bolstered numbers might overwhelm the defenders. Fortunately, Ylisse isn't without allies. Letters are dispatched to Regna Ferox and Valm asking for support. The answers are swift: everyone seems willing to answer Ylisse's call. Khan Flavia is already mustering her forces; Queen Say'ri and Duke Virion are gathering an expeditionary force and are apparently coming in person. You can't help but wonder if that means Inigo and Gerome are coming too. You'd be glad to see them... even if you had hoped for better circumstances.

But maps and plans can only tell you so much. In many ways, your time at the shrine paint a much more vivid picture. Injured soldiers are aplenty, most of them being part of the failed offensive that ended with your father's death. While the sight never fails to stir painful memories, you can't run away from this. Libra would need all the help he can, even with the assistance of Brady. And maybe you could bring someone along? You know Noire is somewhat familiar with a healing staff - given her father, it's hardly surprising - and she had shown a desire to assist in the past. When you make your offer, you can tell she's hesitant, but she comes nonetheless. Libra seems a bit surprised to see his daughter following you when you offer your services, but accepts it with a smile.

To your relief, Noire seems to grow quickly into her role. Her calm and quiet disposition are appreciated among the injured, and even her sudden bursts of temper seem well-timed, often shocking more difficult cases into submission. As for you, you fulfil your tasks with practised familiarity. It's also a good opportunity to talk to the soldiers about their experience. It does provide a closer, more personal image of the war... but also often bring back your thoughts to that day.

You still can't decide if you should ask about your father's death. Part of you really don't want to know. Would it really bring you peace anyway, or just give a new shape to your nightmares? And still the thought is always there. You doubt the wounded soldiers at the Shrine could tell you much, but your entourage is full of people who would have been with him during his final moments.

Finally, what little free time you have left is spent on the sole memento of your father you carry: Falchion, the legendary blade forged from Naga's tooth, passed down the Exalted line. The blade that vanquished the Dark God Grima once. It only answers to those of Exalted blood, and even not always - you remember your father telling you neither your grandfather nor Aunt Emmeryn seemed to be able to use it, though in the later case the effort had been minimal, from what you knew. As for you... You felt something the day you received the sword. Did it mean the blade deemed you worthy? Only one way to find out.

You spend time in the palace courtyard, testing the blade against training dummies. First impression: the blade, who fitted your adult father perfectly, is still a bit large for your taste. It wasn't heavy per say - you were becoming quite strong, even by adult standards - but rather unwieldy due to its size. Oh well, you were still growing, so you hoped that problem would fade this time. As for whether Falchion had chosen you... The results were somewhat mixed. At times, the blade went through the wooden mannequins without any trouble, and sometimes it would bounce back harmlessly. The inconsistent results were somewhat surprising, but at least it worked some of the time, right? If only you could ask Father...

And then you remembered; even without your father to guide you, you could ask someone who did wield the sword for most of his life. Pulling out your einherjar card, you focused on summoning the Hero King Marth. Its ghostly silhouette manifested into existence, still a fragile presence, yet real enough for your needs. If he is surprised to see the blade in your hands, he shows no sign of it, instead listening to your dilemma.

While he doesn't know all the exact mechanisms himself, Marth does provide some useful insight. From what he says, Falchion is somewhat tied to the user's willpower. The blade can feel the intent behind a strike, and respond accordingly. At first, maintaining its edge might require concentration, as the blade and its wielder are still familiarizing with each other. With time and training, this should become second nature. In general, Falchion tend to grow stronger with time, as long as the one wielding it remained resolute in its commitment. Meditation with the blade could also go a long way toward understanding its potential - something he seems all too happy to guide you for.

Time and training then. Like most things in your life, you supposed.

Fixed event

It is during one of those meditation sessions that your concentration is suddenly broken by cries of alarm. You don't need a long time to determine the cause, as you feel a large shadow flying above you. Raising your head, you see one, no, two dragons? You barely have the time to collect your thoughts that the two creatures, losing altitude dangerously fast, literally crash into the palace's garden. Is it an attack? Clutching Falchion, you decide to rush forward and see for yourself. It isn't long before you found their point of impact, marked by a downed tree and devastated flower bed. But instead of finding two creatures of legend, you see... two girls? And as your eyes widen, you realize you know both of them.

Morgan seems to have grown a lot since the last time you saw her, her white, wild hair not quite hiding the pointy ears marking her manakete heritage. But as she looked at you, what struck you the most was the utter exhaustion mixed with fear on her face as she eyed you warily, seemingly not recognizing you. Nah, on her hand, seemed more put together, yet her traits showed trace of the same exhaustion, and to your horror you noticed her left arm is bloodied. Still, she managed a weak smile when she saw you running toward them.​

"Oh hey, Lucina. It's been a while."

Anyway, that was exhausting. And I suspect the quality of writing plummeted mid-way through. Corrections are welcome.

In the end, there really isn't any choice, is there? You want to argue, but can't help it'd be selfish of you. to ignore Sir Frederick's wishes in favour of your own. On the other hand, you're wary about sending him in the front-lines. Given his current state of mind, you'd be afraid he would end up doing something reckless. Clearly Yarne thought so too, if the relieved look he sends your way when you announce your decision is any indication. Frederick, for his part, remains impassive, simply bowing his head in thanks before taking his leave. It's hard to focus on the council for the rest of the day after that. As long as you could remember, Frederick had been a stalwart rock, seemingly impossible to shake in his duty. Having him resign, even if only to assume a different position... Is there anything certain in the world anymore?

After a conversation with Lon'qu a few weeks later , you are forced to conclude that 'non' seems to be the only answer.

In the end, you can't run away from the truth. You simply have to know. All that's left to decide then is to find the right person to ask.

The easy answer would be your mother, but you can't quite bring yourself to do it. It would make the whole thing even more painful, you fear. Similarly, Frederick doesn't seem to be in the best place right now to revisit what are clearly painful memories. For a moment, you consider your magic mentor - you're sure Henry would probably have no trouble telling you what happened - but then you realize that maybe there's such a thing as being too blasé. You don't dislike his usual detachment and worry-free attitude, but in such a matter, you fear it might make you quite mad. In the end, you decide sir Lon'qu is probably your best bet; you know he respected your father as a swordsman, and his no-nonsense approach might be the best way to go about such a painful topic.

You ask the question at the end of one of your training session. The dark-haired blademaster stares at you for a while, before grunting his approval.

"First. What I'm going to tell you cannot become public knowledge. You can tell people you trust if you want, but as far as Ylisse is concerned, the Exalt died in battle, and that's all there is to it."

You can feel your heart beating faster. Meaning there was more to it.

"... that day, we invaded the Dragon Table. Main Grima sanctuary, or something like that. But it was a trap. As soon as we entered, your father and Robin got separated from us, and ended up facing King Validar while we were swarmed by Risen and Grimleal."

That certainly seemed like a tough spot to be thrust in, but from what she heard, your father had beaten tougher odds, especially with Robin at his side.

"For a while, it seemed like they had the upper hand. Then Robin stabbed Chrom through the heart."

You blink, half-convinced you misheard something. But Lon'qu doesn't continue or correct himself, instead staring at you as if looking for your reaction. This is absurd. That can't be right. Robin was one of father's most trusted friends. His tactics led the Shepherds through countless battles, never failing to deliver them victory. He taught you the basics of strategy himself. There was no way what Lon'qu just said was true. He must be lying, or mistaken!

Except... you knew your chon'sin instructor would never lie about such a grave matter. And you doubted he'd speak with such certainty if he had any doubt over what he saw. Yet how is it making any sense?!

"How?" you manage to choke out. "Why?"

"Used some sort of lightning spell, from what I could see" shrugged Lon'qu. "Can't tell you much more about it, magic was never my thing. No idea about the why."

Suddenly you think you understand Frederick's attitude a lot more. If that happened, did that mean he missed something crucial about Robin during all these years? But then, why now? He could have betrayed the Shepherds at any point during the first war against Plegia, or during the Valmese campaign. Why wait until now to make a move? Unless...

A horrible thought suddenly strikes you. The fact that Robin was from Plegia was not widely known outside the Shepherd circle; but had it been just that? Lucina knew he was an user of dark magic, which was something that she never thought to question until now - after all, he wasn't the only dark mage she knew, and was even training to master that discipline now. But the group most closely associated with that sort of magic was the Grimleal. Had Robin been one all along?

It made a twisted sort of sense, you realized with a pit in your stomach. From what you read, the mad King Gangrel had kept the Grima cultist at arm's length, using them when convenient but more often than not keeping them on a short leash. And Walhart the Conqueror never hid the contempt he had for religion and divinities, the needs for humans to break their divine shackles being a leitmotiv of his crusade. When you looked at it that way, every action Robin took led to the rise of Validar, head of the Grimleal, to the throne of Plegia, and the main threat from Valm all but crushed. All he had to do...

You have to bit your lips to stop yourself from screaming, ignoring the faint taste of blood in your mouth. Had it been a lie all along? Robin had always seemed somewhat distant, almost haunted at times. Had it simply be a way to mask his treachery? Signs of regrets for what he was about to do perhaps? Unforgivable. Absolutely unforgivable.

"And... what happened to him?"

Lon'qu expression darkened, which had hardly seemed possible a few seconds ago. "Still in Plegia, as far as I know. W couldn't get to him through the Risen. We had to pull back. Panne covered us."

One more death due to this betrayal. Shaking with rage and grief, you can't help to make one wish. That you'd have the chance to confront your former mentor sooner or later. It is a selfish thought, but it's the only thing providing comfort in this moment. And Naga willing, you hope that one day, you'll get to return the favour and drive Falchion through his own black heart. Surely Father would approve.

From that day on, the face of the white-haired grandmaster is never far from your thoughts. But you didn't expect to receive an even more vivid reminder so soon after that conversation.

Meeting face to face with Nah and Morgan certainly comes as a surprise, and comes with a lot of mixed emotions.

On one hand, you genuinely missed them. After more than four years apart, you can't quite suppress the sudden surge of happiness at their sight. You always got along well with Nah, and while Morgan had been quite young the last time you saw her, you remember thinking she was absolutely adorable.

On the other, their sudden appearance, their tiredness and Nah apparently having been injured is worrying. You don't know what happened, but you can't be sure it was nothing good. Also, where is Nowi? Does she know about this?

And finally, you can't quite erase the instinctive thought of your father killed mine.

You're spared the need to pick up a reaction by the rushing attendants and guards coming to investigate the crash. You do your best to defuse the situation - it's clear the sight of so many armed people put the two sisters on edge, with Nah protectively standing in front of Morgan despite her obvious exhaustion - and fortunately it isn't long before Lady Cordelia shows up to restore a semblance of order. As things begin to settle down, you can see the two half-manakete relax a bit. Morgan in particular seems fascinated by her new environment, before giving her sister an hesitant smile.

"Hey, we finally made it, right?"

"That we did" pleasantly answered her sister. "Great job."

Well, that was both vague and potentially worrying. But before any question can be asked, the first order of the day is to feed two starving manakete. You can honestly say you were not ready for the sight, as you watch the two girls tear through anything the cooks managed to cobble together without giving any sign of slowing down. After a while though, fatigue seems to overcome hunger for Morgan, Nah agreeing to provide answers while her sister is given a chance to sleep. After a quick, yet heartfelt promise to be there when she'd wake up - another worrying sign concerning their recent experiences in your opinion - Nah find herself surrounded by your mother, aunt Lissa, Lady Maribelle and aunt Cordelia, while you, Cynthia and Owain hang in the background, listening to her tale.

As it turned out, you were right to fear for the worse.

Apparently, a team of Grimleal managed to infiltrate Ylisse's borders, and went straight for the foster home that was taking care of Nah and Morgan. Nah has no idea how they found the place, or why they came here to begin with, but given what you learned a few weeks ago, you think you can hazard a guess. In the end, they only escaped thanks to the timely intervention of Nowi, who had been back with them for the last weeks. The two sisters escaped while their mother stayed behind to cover their escape. The fact that she gave no sign of life since then isn't lost on anyone, but Nah manages to keep her composure during the whole tale, though you don't miss the way her fingers are literally digging into the wooden table she's sitting to as she recall that night. After that, the two sisters walked for a while under the cover of the woods to avoid pursuit, before flying straight to Ylisstol as soon as it seemed safe enough to do so.

... it's hard to resent her for her father after that.

Cordelia orders an immediate dispatch to check on the site, but that will take some time. In the meantime, you volunteer to escort back Nah to the quarters prepared for her and Morgan. The walk is made in an awkward silence, both of you seemingly unsure of what to say after four years, not to mention the dramatic circumstances of your reunion. Finally Nah settles for an awkward "We heard about your dad. I'm sorry."

You weakly nod. "Yeah. I am too. About your mother..."

"We can't be sure yet." Her denial is only half-hearted though. You don't know if the way she manages to stay strong even now is admirable or painful. Probably both. Just as you're about to usher her to her room with Morgan, Nah interrupts you, an uncertain expression on her face.

"Lucina, I just wanted to ask... did you hear anything about dad?"

Your eyes widen.

Chapter 2-20: Standing together (spring 2623)
[X] "We don't know what happened to him, not really. He betrayed us for Plegia, but everything I know about him just makes that make next to no sense. What happened to both of you makes it make actually no sense. If he was planning to betray us and take you with him he would have set something more foolproof up well in advance."
-[X] "I'm sorry Nah, take care of your sister and get some rest if you can. There's more that needs to be talked about, but... not today."

It's hard to come with something that wouldn't be needlessly hurtful. Whatever your thoughts about Robin right now, Nah doesn't deserve your anger.

She also doesn't deserve a lie.

"I'm... unsure of the details. But from what I heard, he betrayed us to Plegia."

The young manakete's shock is visible on her face.

"What? But... Are you sure?"

You sigh. "I am not certain of anything these days. I can only tell you of what I heard."

Nah is visibly trying to take the news in, looking lost. "But then... the way the Risen found us... are you saying..."

"Probably?" You pause. "Though now that I think about it, that does sound unusually sloppy for him." At the very least, if Robin had wanted to get his children back, you'd have expected him to make a move immediately after his betrayal instead of waiting for nearly six months. Another question to ask him if you ever got the chance, you supposed.

That is however of little comfort to Nah. "Gods. Is that why mother danced around the subject for days? I thought he died, but this-"

You put a hand on your exhausted friend's shoulder. "Hey. Right now you need to rest, and be there for your sister. We... we will talk later, okay? You're not alone."

"Right." she weakly nods. "Right. I need to take care of Morgan first. I'll try to get some sleep and... I'll ask around later."

It's clear she's still reeling from the revelation, but all in all you're impressed by how well she seems to roll with the punches. Is that the same feeling you gave to your sister when father died?

"And, Lucina? It's... nice to see you again. Even though I kinda hoped for different circumstances."

You find yourself smiling without thinking. "Likewise, Nah."

Given the recent events, you're sure that both of you can use one more friend.

The patrol sent to investigate the recent events comes back a few days later. The farm that housed the two manakete was now a ruin, and multiple Risen corpses were found torn to pieces, smashed under rocks or burned to a crisp. No sign of Nowi, of their foster family or of any living Grimleal though. It might mean that the Shepherd is still alive somewhere, but you have trouble believing it. Nah shows no sign of distress over this uncertainty however, instead seemingly devoted to watch her little sister like a hawk at almost any hour of the day.

As for Morgan, she's... oddly cheerful. She seems to have immediately taken a liking to your sister and your cousin, and have been thrilled to learn of her prearranged membership in the Justice Cabal. In that respect, if Nah inherited her serious disposition from her father, it seems Morgan got her playful and carefree attitude from her mother's side. You're... just not sure how she can smile and laugh so easily given the circumstances. Though you're not sure of what she knows to begin with. She's happy at the very least, and her presence also seems to lift Cynthia's spirits, which is always good in your book.

Spring comes, and with it Ylisse's allies. Khan Flavia shows in Ylisstol with hundreds of fierce feroxi warriors, visibly itching for a fight. Queen Say'ri leads three thousand spearmen and archers, alongside a coterie of chon'sin swordsmasters. And uncle Virion and his wife arrive with the levies of Rosanne, with Lady Cherche and a contingent of wyvern knights as its most striking element. You also barely recognize the face of Sir Vaike, a figure you haven't seen in years, and you're surprised to see that apparently Inigo and Gerome have made the trip too.

Both have grown since the last time your saw them. Inigo still looks like the boy you remember, his light-blue hair framing a timid face as he seems to take in the familiar image of Ylisstol. By contrast, Gerome seems harder to read, his closed expression not letting any emotion through. Still, for the first time in more than four years, all of the friends of your early childhood are here in one place. It's almost tragic, you think, how war seems to reunite all of you when peace split you up.​

You really hope that it will change one day. But now you realize that future won't simply be granted to you. You'll have to fight for it.

By now, your lessons with Sir Johannes have been permanently put on hold; the general consensus around the palace is that you're unlikely to let your sword skills rust, and that you reached a level where you can be trusted to know what is best for your continued improvement yourself. Still, your lesson agenda is still as packed as ever.

They might refuse, or external circumstances might prevent them to attend, but there's a chance the one picked will be present, and might help and/or benefit from the chosen action. Lon'qu taught you most of what there is to know about the chon'sin style, with nothing but the most advanced techniques eluding you still. But in order to master it, there is no secret: swing, and swing again. Repetition is key, insists your mentor.

[] Harder, better, faster, stronger: of course, you could also work on your physical condition on your own. More is always better, right?
[] The Coming Storm: with Ylisse's trusted allies here, you expect the war discussions to significantly pick up, especially given the general suspicion that the end of winter might come with a plegian offensive. Now more than ever, your place might be in the war room.

[] A country at war: but the conflict isn't just fought in the planning rooms or even on the frontlines. By now its shadow looms over the whole land, and is behind every decision the regency council takes. One day you will be the one expected to take them; for now you can observe and learn.

[] Talking to the dukes: beside your mother and your aunt, you can't say you know much about the other members of the regency council. Yet those people might be the ones you'll have to rely on later as an Exalt. Spending some time to start knowing even one of them better could be a precious boon, and perhaps it could also be an interesting learning opportunity.
-[] Duke Themis: the father of Maribelle is an eminent lawmaker and politician, wielding a considerable influence among his peers. He is also accutely aware of the situation on the frontlines, his lands being threatened directly.
-[] Duke Lurelin: his wealth might end up a decisive factor in Ylisse's survival should the war be there to last. He is also well-travelled, and from what you heard always eager to talk about his foreign trips.
-[] Duchess Arnelle: while it is likely the fate of this conflict will be decided on land, her experience of sea battle makes her a valuable ally to counter plegian raiders... and to maintain contacts and supply routes with Valm. Though you're likely to be out of your depths here.
-[] Duke Karan: the grizzled veteran has recently been appointed as commander of the ylissean forces, though it remains to be seen what the status of the allied armies will be. Nonetheless getting to know the one tasked to win a war for you can't hurt.

[] Dark arts for dark times: Henry is back, so you're now able to throw his unreadable notes back at his face. But more importantly, he can resume his magical teachings.

[] House of healing: by now, the shrine is becoming crowded from the wounded, and you expect the situation to worsen when the fighting will resume in earnest. You think opening up a palace wing for Libra to work with might be a significant help, albeit a time-consuming project (and probably a security risk).

[] When all else is lost, the future still remains: you are exploring Falchion's powers. At the very least, giving it an edge must become second nature for you, not something that you consciously think about. And the spirit of Marth suggested there might be more under the surface...

[] Spend time in the library: it seems absurd to waste time reading when there are so many things you should train for. Still, your tutors often impressed upon you that knowledge was a weapon in itself. You usually prefer yours to be sharper, but maybe they have a point.​

For the first time, there are other wyvern knights in Ylisstol, and you're sure that Cherche at the very least would be glad to check your progress and see Cu for herself. You don't know if that would help much when it came to sword-fighting mid-air or flinging magic, but even having someone point out what you could have been doing wrong all this time would be a boon.

[] Magic of the card: while the speed at which you can summon the einherjar and its duration are reaching the limits of what you believe to be possible, you never know what extra training can provide. Also you think there's room for improvement on the consistency of the spirit; its ghostly appearance suggest a lack of durability in the summon.

you now have a spirit holding most of the Hero King memories as a potential conversation partner. And it's hard to suppress your morbid curiosity when you think about the hard times he went through, and how they would compare with the current days.

[] Swordsman of legend: the idea comes to your mind like an evidence. Marth was renowned as perhaps the best swordsman of his time, able to slay the Shadow Dragon Medeus. More than that, it is said he was the one who established the basics of the ylissean royal style that your family trains in. Making him perhaps the last person able to guide you further on this path.

[] The long road: Cynthia has regained some of her spark since your last talk, and the addition of Morgan to the Justice Cabal certainly makes for an interesting dynamic. Spending time with them might give you the opportunity to learn to know the young girl, be there for your sister as she seems to be at a crossroad, and maybe see if you there's something to be done with the exuberant energy the three Justice Cabalists seem to ooze.

Uncertain future


Your twelfth birthday finds you in no mood to celebrate. You have to show a strong front however. In those uncertain times, the Ylisseans need to know that despite their Exalt's death, his heir is ready to step up. The public speech you give, reasserting the oath you made the day you learned of your father's death, is attended by thousands of your people. In return, the palace is drowned under the many flowers, letters and gifts brought in as a mark of affection or as a statement of shared grief. Your father was popular, and your own actions over the years earned you a lot of good will too. The times may be dark, but at the very least the Ylissean people stand with their Exalt.​

Of course, that display of good will is one more reason to not let them down, and that means work. As always, your lessons are demanding and time-consuming. Those you attend, at least. After your poor introduction to the lessons of Lord Harrowmont, leaving that behind is no hard decision. It's not like trade would be high on the agenda if the war went poorly anyway, right? Similarly, you feel like you learn more about the state of Ylisse at the regency council's table than in a classroom.

Unsurprisingly though, people begin to notice your repeated absences. After years of dutifully attending every lessons assigned to you, you suppose it was only a matter of time. You can't help but frown at some of the whispers that manage to reach you. The gossip seems mostly charitable, attributing your recent ditching to grief, but you don't like that it sometimes come with the implication that you may be neglecting your duties as future Exalt. You don't pay it too much mind - clearly the only ones who could believe that are those not familiar with your timetable these days - but the insinuations sting nonetheless.

Plus, Maribelle alone is enough to work you to the bone. You didn't think it was possible for her to pick up the pace of her lessons, yet somehow she manages, challenging you at every turn and settling for nothing but your absolute best. Her focus on the rule of pat Exalts, their deeds and their flaws, is enlightening - and a little intimidating. It isn't just your father you have to live up to - and the handful of tales about your ancestors who really did make a mess of things are a healthy reminder that your bloodline isn't infallible.

On the other hand, things move much more slowly in your military lessons with Sir Duncan. The old knight is meticulous and knowledgeable, but seems overly cautious in his teaching methods. In a way, you fear Robin taught you too well. Still, you have good hopes that those lessons will pay off... eventually.​

But while you don't neglect the academic portion of your studies, training your body is at least as important as training your mind. There is a war going on, and you know from experience that even the palace's walls aren't as safe as one might believe. Also, swordplay is one of those few activities that you genuinely enjoy. And you think you know just the perfect teacher to make due progress once again.

You have little reason to smile these days. Yet the prospect of being trained by the Hero-King himself - or at least an almost perfect replica of him - makes it hard to not feel at least a little giddy. You're pretty sure your cousin would be green with envy if her learned about that.

Also you try to not think too hard about the fact that this may very well be your last option to learn more about your family's sword style.

The method has its downsides. The summon's duration doesn't allow for extended training sessions. That the spirit doesn't keep any memories of your previous interactions after each calling takes some time to work around - though fortunately, Marth seems to adjust quickly each time. And the einherjar's presence is somewhat frail, making sparring a delicate prospect.

All of that doesn't prevent you from being in awe of the sheer skill on display. This was the reflection of the one who slayed the Shadow Dragon for good. And this was the level you aspired to reach one day. You do wonder, how would your father had compared in his prime? You suppose you will never know. But watching Marth demonstrate his craft is like rediscovering something you thought you already knew. Week after week, the two of you work on refining your style, focusing more on speed and fluidity rather than the ridiculous raw strength that your father displayed. Not that the concept of hitting someone really, really hard lost its appeal to you.

Your heart skips a beat when the spirit idly muses about teaching you Aether. That, you decide, is something you won't let him forget.

This time with Marth also serves another purpose. In between lessons, your attention turns on Falchion. Up until now, you kept thinking of it as your father's sword. But if you intend to wield this blade, it needs to become yours. In that respect, seeing its ghostly copy at the spectral Hero-King's side is a good reminder that the Tooth of Naga changed hands more than once. And more than once, it allowed heroes of old to save mankind from destruction. And you can feel it: this is what is at stakes once again.

So there's no choice. You will master Falchion, because you can't allow not to. If you can't do it, that burden would fall on your sister or your cousin, and that is not something you wish for them. You spend hours swinging Falchion, or simply meditating on the blade. After several weeks, the feeling of awkwardness you had when wielding it is entirely gone; its height is no longer a hindrance, and by now taking it with you has become second nature. More importantly, the sword never seems to lose its edge in your hands anymore.

Still, there's more to it, you can tell.

You do not neglect the training sessions with Kjelle and Severa either. It's really nice to train with people who share your drive, you think. Seeing Severa improving by the day or having to match Kjelle's monstrous strength and endurance makes you only more determined - especially since you know that they too are working hard on their own. Severa complains about Frederick and Sully rubbing on you two far too much, which in fairness might be true, but she's still keeping up the pace. And by training with her, you begin to pick up a few things of the more unconventional sword style Gregor taught her. You probably don't have time to really train in it - you have your hands full as it is - but this might be useful down the road, especially if you end up facing opponents proficient in this form.

The only issue this training regimen have is when you decide to spar together. Your uneven numbers means someone is standing by the wayside, and while it's not a huge problem, it is enough to make you all considering adding a fourth person to your training group. Of course, who to add proves to be a source of disagreement. You suggesting Owain is met with two scowls. Severa at least seems willing to consider it, but Kjelle warns that she might end up knocking him out if he insists on being... well, his usual self. She in turn propose inviting Nah, which seems like a strange choice until you realize she probably just want to fight a dragon. Severa says she talked with Inigo a bit, and that he did mention trying to learn swordsmanship, though his meek attitude might give him a hard time. Gerome is an unknown, but may be willing to join, and you even consider Yarne - though even mentioning the idea to him might be enough to make him run for the hills. In the end, they agree to leave the decision to you.

You make the suggestion to Severa after one of your joint sessions. Two and a half year after your trip to Chon'sin, you have the opportunity to meet Say'ri again, the one who inspired you to learn a brand new swordstyle to begin with. Severa seems almost as eager at the prospect, not even bothering to feign disinterest. And while the foreign queen spends most of her days planning for the war, or in more informal discussions with the other Shepherds, she makes a point of making some time for you.

The two of you are officially invited to chon'sin encampment, where Say'ri and her inner circle are preparing for the battles to come. At first the queen's guards are curious - and maybe a little bit sceptical - but after being given a chance to demonstrate what Lon'qu taught you under the approving gaze of their lord, you are quick to win them over. One of them even jokes that if this what ylissean children can do, perhaps they really aren't needed here. You weakly smile, wishing things were that simple.

For several weeks, you train with the swordmasters of chon'sin, sometimes with Say'ri herself. It's always fascinating to observe how practitioners of one style can differ from one another. You were already aware that Lon'qu and Say'ri swordplay felt different, and training with Marth had been a bit of an eye-opener when it came to your own royal style, but you couldn't help but marvel still at those subtle variations making for a truly unique approach. Training under Say'ri is a mix between physical exertion and zen-like meditation, each move flowing one after another while your head is free of any iddle thought. A dance of steel, you always thought. And maybe for the first time, you think you truly understand its rhythm.

As you went back to your room after yet another training session - a common occurrence these days - you end up literally running into a familiar figure.

"Blood and thunder! Who dares- oh, it's you Lucina. Sorry, I didn't see you there."

Noire offers you a sheepish smile as she gets back on her feet. Truth be told, you're rather glad to meet her like that, your hectic schedule left you with little time to go see her these days.

"It's okay, I wasn't looking either. Are you well, Noire?"

She simply shrugs. "I guess? I was just coming back from some practice." You watch as she picks up the training bow she had been carrying.

"So you managed to continue archery? That's great! How is it going?"

"It's... okay?" She hesitates a bit, seemingly embarrassed. "I mean, I managed to have Gaius show me a few tricks. Still, I don't think I'm very good at it."

"Oh. Can I help?" Truth be told, you're really not sure what you could do. You know nothing of archery, after all. Perhaps ask Uncle Virion some tips?

"Oh, no, I'll manage. Though..." She looks at you hesitantly, looking nervous. "Actually, there might be something. Can we talk for a bit?"

You wordlessly invite her to follow you. You're not sue what this is about, but you're not going to leave her hanging. If Noire needs your help, she'll get it.

"So, I've been thinking. How to become more useful, I mean. Archery's a start, and I'm not too bad with a staff, but...I think... no, I know there's something I can be better at." She takes a deep breath. "I watched mother a lot, you know. When she's experimenting with spells, or conducting research, or-" She interrupts herself, as if recalling an unpleasant memory. You can't quite suppress a scowl yourself, as you remember your last interactions with Tharja and what led to it. Eventually though, Noire continues.

"I did manage to learn a couple of things on my own. I really, really think that I could be good at it. But when I ask mother, she refused to teach me more."

You blink. She' not thinking of asking you to teach her instead, is she? You're barely a novice yourself! As if reading your mind, Noire quickly protests.

"Wait, I know you can't help with that. But, there's this book in mother's study. I did manage to learn a couple of spells from it before she took it away. I... maybe you could help me retrieve it?"

Your eyes widen. This... seems like a very dangerous plan that could easily backfire. On the other hand, you can't begrudge Noire for wanting to know more - who knows what you would have done if father had refused to teach you the sword? But surely there were less risky ways to go about it?​

Well, for a straightforward chapter where not much happen, this was surprisingly difficult to write. And yeah, I know, Aether is an Ike thing, not a Marth thing. Let's chalk it up to quest-induced canon disturbance.

It's a good occasion to see who'd be interested, you think. You're sure at least a few of your friends would be eager to join, and you might as well make the offer to everyone while you're at it. No need to have someone feel left out. Soon, you begin your tour of the various Shepherd children, leaving Morgan aside for now, being four years your junior and all.

A few of them refuse, which was to be expected. Laurent shows little interest in such a strenuous activity, and Brady outright laughs before stating you really don't want to have him swinging any kind of weapon near you. Apparently, the last time he tried under his father's guidance was an unmitigated disaster. He'll stick to healing staves for now, thank you very much. Yarne seems on the fence for a while, until you mention Kjelle would be there, at which point he runs for the hills. You're really going to have to do something about that. More surprisingly perhaps, Gerome turns the offer down. You don't know much about him or what he likes to do - it's been a while since you saw him, and even then you weren't that close - but it's clear from his appearance that he does train, so you had expected him to be at least interested. No such luck, it seems.

Then there are those who remain ambivalent. You can tell Cynthia is uncertain, but would probably do it were you to insist. Inigo seems rather shy at the prospect, apparently more intimidated by social interactions than by the training itself, but you can tell he's seriously considering it. And Noire... Noire seems to not like the idea much, yet doesn't turn you down, simply saying that if you think it's a good idea, she'll do it. At this point, you're becoming rather worried for her.

And then there's Owain and Nah. Owain is rather enthusiastic when you talk to him about it, even more so when you mention Kjelle and Severa, mentioning the need for someone to make them smile once in a while. You have a bad feeling about this. Nah is more subdued, yet respond positively almost instantly, focusing instead of the ways to make it work. Clearly her recent experiences and feeling responsible for her younger sister serve as powerful motivations, though you're worried she might end up overdoing it.

All in all, that leaves you with a few candidates. Now all that remains is to decide what to do.

You hesitate. Doing nothing isn't an option, but Noire's plan seems particularly risky. Your first instinct is to propose Henry's help instead, but in the end you suggest talking to Maribelle instead. While she never was in charge of your magical education, you value her teaching experience and if all Noire wants is to learn magic, she's probably a safer alternative. If your friend is dead set on dark magic, there'll be time to talk to Henry later. In the end, Noire listens to your advice, and the two of you go to expose the situation to the noblewoman. Maribelle listens patiently, eyeing Noire inquisitively the whole time.


"I believe I have a good grasp of the situation" she calmly states. "You were right to seek me out."


"Then you'll teach her?" you ask hopefully, as Noire seems to perk up at the positive comment.


"It depends."


You blink. Depends on what? Instead of answering the question, Maribelle calls for a servant.


"Please inform lady Tharja that I need to speak to her urgently. Mention the fact it concerns her daughter if she seems reluctant to come."


Your eyes widen, and Noire seems ready to faint on the spot. A meeting with the dark mage was something you'd rather have avoided, especially in this matter. Maribelle seems sure of herself however, as she lightly admonishes your friend.


"Don't look so alarmed. This isn't something that could simply be done behind your mother's back, not unless you're prepared for the reckoning that would inevitably follow. Lady Tharja and I aren't especially close, but I believe we have enough of an understanding for me to intercede in your favor."


Her confidence is reassuring, even though you can't help but worry. At the very least, you wouldn't want to be the messenger having to deliver the news. For half an hour, the three of you patiently wait over a cup of tea, until Tharja comes bursting in, a dark expression on her face. Noire shrinks back in her seat at the sight, and you can't quite suppress the shiver that goes down your spine. The invitation to sit down is entirely ignored.


"What's this about Noire? And how is she involved?"


The last part is directed at you, her glare showing that she did not forget the last time you talked. You do your best to return it, refusing to be intimidated - or at the very least to show it. Maribelle however seems unfazed.


"Straight to the point then. I would ask you to reconsider your refusal to teach your art to your daughter."


Tharja snorts. "Hmph. I would have thought you of all people would agree with my decision. Was that your idea, Noire? Hoping that I'd say yes to another person when I said no to you? Or maybe this was your friend's plan?"


Noire is once again spared the need to respond by your teacher. "I assure you your hostility toward princess Lucina is misplaced. In fact the current situation might have been worse had she not brought the current situation to my attention. And my personal distaste for the dark arts aside, I believe you'd be better served by teaching Noire yourself, rather than simply wait for her to take the matter into her own hands."


"And why" sneers Tharja "would I even entertain that thought? You should know better than most the risks dark magic carry out for the user, healer."


"It isn't something I'd wish for my son" Maribelle easily agrees. "However should he ever display such... zeal toward those sorts of things, and were my initial warnings disregarded, I believe my duty as a parent would be to make sure he learns in the safest possible conditions. Simply forbidding it would be heavy-handed, and worse, inefficient. Noire is already at a point where she looked for outside help in order to pursue a path you forbade her to take. How do you think this will end, should you persist in your refusal?" The sentence is met with silence. "Perhaps you believe Henry would be better suited to educate your daughter on the many dangers of the discipline?"


The very thought seems enough to make Tharja physically ill. Henry isn't that bad... right? You think at the flippant tone he used when he described how to use dark magic, the vagueness of his descriptions when he talked about potential after-effects of casting a hex, or how little concern he showed when offering his own life force for you to train with. Okay, maybe he was that bad.


"Is this really what you want, Noire?"


Your friend does your best to straighten up, despite her body language showing she'd rather be anywhere but here under her mother's watchful gaze.


"Y-yes! I'll work hard, and listen to everything you say! I think... I think I could really be good at it!"


Tharja doesn't smile at her eagerness. "Of course you'd be good at it" she sighs. "You'll regret it, daughter of mine. Tomorrow at dawn, in my lab."


With those words, the dark mage takes her leave, leaving behind a stunned Noire. That... went a lot better than what you feared, an opinion that your friend definitely seems to share.


"I... Lucina, lady Maribelle, thank you! I don't... thank you."


Noire leaves in a daze, visibly still shocked by what happened, leaving you alone with Maribelle. The noblewoman finally allows herself to relax a bit, refilling her teacup.


"That could have gone worse, I suppose."


On that, you can agree. "I didn't think it'd be that simple."


"Lady Tharja isn't someone to approach carelessly" she nods. "However I believe having more than a decade of experience knowing her gives me an advantage over you in that domain."


"Is Noire going to be okay though?" You can't help but voice your worry. You don't have a lot of trust in Tharja, given what happened the last time you interfered in her family affairs.


"I do hope so. I do think Tharja cares for her daughter, even if she is deplorable at showing her affections. At the very least, I choose to believe sir Libra would not have married an entirely heartless woman." She hesitates. "I would not expect her training to be particularly pleasant though. Next time you see your friend, tell her she can go see me if she feels the need to learn safer material. I might not be the most knowledgeable among the Shepherds when it comes to magic, but I'm reasonably confident in my ability to teach, at the very least." She hesitates. "Gods, what if she had went to Henry? We should count our blessings that this didn't happen."

In a rather hectic schedule, the time spent with Cynthia, Owain and Morgan is a breath of fresh air. Nah isn't hard to convince - in fact, you suspect she wouldn't had been far anyway, given how she rarely leaves Morgan out of sight these days - and the five of you spend more than one afternoon together, enjoying each other's company.

Morgan seems a little skittish around you, but has an easier time bonding with your sister and cousin - something you try not to take personally, even though it is a little vexing. Her ability to turn into a dragon is however met with delight by Cynthia and Owain, and in turn the younger manakete seems pretty happy to show off. You aren't entirely sure of how she can be so cheerful given the recent events, but you're not complaining. Even Nah is brought into it, and though she protests each time, you do not miss her small smile each time she's called over for double dragon fun. You join in for a few games of tag, or the occasional mock battle against Owain - who more often than not turns into an epic saga with more time spent updating his latest backstory than actual fighting.

You kind of wish he'd stop calling you a demon queen during those times though. You understand the need for an antagonist in any good tale, but why are you always the villain?

Cynthia, on her hand seems to be doing better. She's more subdued than before, and you can still catch her starring at nothing from time to time, but her smile and her laugh haven't changed. Her mood reaches new heights when she shows up one morning with a pegasus foal in tow. A gift from your mother, who deemed Cynthia ready to take care of her own mount - and probably believed it couldn't hurt her morale. For the following weeks, it's almost impossible to separate your sister from the newly named Morrigan, who she shows off to basically everyone. You're happy for her - and relieved now that Cu is probably safe from being stolen away.

"I... I thought about what you told me that day," she tells you one morning "and I wanted to tell you... I still want to do it. I still want to be a hero after all. Not just yours, one for lots of people. I don't know if I can do it, but I want to try."

Offering her a supportive smile, you ask if there's anything you can do to help, but your sister simply shakes her head.

"Don't worry, you already helped me plenty. i already asked aunt Cordelia, she agreed to train me alongside the youngest pegasus knight recruits in the fall. Also, you gave me an idea for something else."

Your attempt at asking what could that something be is only met with an impish smile and a "it's a secret!". Well that's new. You do notice she has a couple of conversations with Owain afterwards who seem more serious than usual, but when you try to interrogate your cousin, he only deflects the question in the most awkward fashion. You suppose you'll have to wait to see what your sister have in store; for now, you'll trust her newfound resolve.

Cynthia's new disposition comfort you in your plans to bring her with you to see Cherche. While wyvern and pegasus knights are rather different, you know from experience that there's a lot one can learn from the other. Your sister is enthusiastic at the thought, and together you go toward the Rosanne training field.

Cherche is delighted to see Cu, positively commenting on her growth and giving you a few additional tips to better care for her - as well as to deal with the sometime fiery temper drakes can go through during their maturation, which is hitting your companion fast. Then come the flying lessons. For the first time, you now have a frame of reference from genuine wyvern knights, instead of trying to mimic pegasus flyers and see what works and what doesn't. You have to admit, seeing several drakes charging together make for a fearsome sight - a worrying thought when you remember that Plegia fields more than a few of those units. Still, you welcome the experience to fly as part of a formation. Cynthia mostly watches from the ground, but you can tell it left an impression on her too.

Sometimes you can see Gerome from afar, but even then he seems to be keeping some distance.

But while your training is taking most of your time, you don't forget your main duty. Yarne continues to follow you to the regency councils, even if he desperatly looks out of place, while Laurent dutifully attends the war meetings.

The first weeks are mostly spent solving the logistical challenges posed by the allied reinforcements. While their help is more than welcome, reorganizing the supply lines to accommodate their presence proves to be a daunting task, though one that is apparently solved by calling upon a group of merchants that apparently all share the same name? From what you understand, they were already a big help in the Valmese campaign, even if Ylisse's treasurer can't help but suppress a groan at the thought.

One other issue is to solve the somewhat fragmented chain of command. With no less than four sovereign nations represented in the alliance, there's a need for someone to coordinate between the various forces on the field. Ultimately, Virion is given the overall planning, despite his protests that a duke leading khans and queens is all sort of backward.

His nomination doesn't come a moment too soon. As it was feared, Plegia's assault start at the beginning of summer, sending everyone in Ylisstol into a frenzy. Many Shepherds join the front once again; Sully and Stahl are dispatched to lead the ylissean knights, Gaius departs alongside a scouting squad, while Say'ri and Flavia leads their troops toward the battle lines. More will follow, Virion himself only staying in the palace a few more weeks to organize his rear lines. Your mother, alongside Cordelia, is once again flying into battle.

As for the fighting, the news are somewhat mixed. At first it seems like Plegia is launching a general assault, large swathes of infantry and cavalry crashing into Ylisse's defenses all along the border, forcing your troops to withdraw in several places. Yet it soon becomes apparent that their attack isn't as strong as initially thought. Despite committing large numbers to the attack, there's a suspicious lack of support from their air forces and dark mages, with only a few grimleal spotted to lead them, and no risen to be found. Command seems to be assumed by young officers, highly motivated but lacking experience. After two weeks of furious fighting, the Plegian offensive falters, before being slowly driven back.

The western provinces remain a battlefield. But successfully halting the Plegians, as well as witnessing foreign reinforcements, seems to have given some morale back to the Ylissean troops. Naga be thanked for small blessings, you suppose.

After managing to speak with her prior to the war, you'd have expected to have the chance to talk to her some more, but your visits to the shrine didn't produce any results. But perhaps her hand can be seen in more indirect ways. As summer comes to an end, you dream...

As she navigated through the Valmese mausoleum, Tiki couldn't help but stifle a yawn. As far as she was concerned, she had been awake for far too long, and all this darkness surrounding her was making her sleepy. Still, she had a job to do today. And recently, feeling some of the friends she made among the Shepherds dying made it unthinkable to simply rest.

Sensing Nowi pass away had been especially hurtful.

"My lady, are you alright?"

Her reverie was interrupted by the voice of one of her escort. Namely, the Chon'sin guard Say'ri had entrusted her safety to. It was easy to see why her dear friend had picked her in that task; hand near her weapon's hilt, eyes scanning every corner for a possible ambush, she was the very picture of vigilance.

"Ah, it's alright, Kan'ei. Just some dark thoughts."

The dark-haired young woman nodded, as their other companion chimed in.

"Well it isn't surprising. Tombs have that sort of effect on many people."

In contrast, the man seemed a lot more at ease, if overly deferential at time. The ageing Valmese guide (he had introduced himself, but Tiki immediately forgot his name. Farlon-something? She probably should feel bad about this) was leading them through the place, torch in hand (not that she really needed it, but she supposed not everyone was blessed with her senses) and seemingly delighted to be in the company of the legendary Voice of Naga.

"Your grace, I must reiterate what great honour you're bestowing upon us by being here today."

Tiki couldn't help but sigh. This was really something she could do without. "Ah, it's nothing, really."

The remark wasn't even acknowledged. "To think you would bless us with your presence so soon after the war!" he marvelled. "Also, I wanted to take the opportunity to apologize on behalf on my people for the... troubles... our previous sovereign might have visited upon you."

Well, troubles was one way of putting it, she supposed. Still, she didn't blame Valm, or even Walhart, for what happened a few years ago. And in a way, the Conqueror had been right in his rebellion against the divine. Had he won, would the world be safer today? It was impossible to know. In the end, she made her bet on Chrom and Ylisse. Despite the worsening odds, she'd stick to it.

Still, betting was all well and good, but she wasn't above trying to stack the deck in her favour. Which was why she was here today, far away from her home in the Mila Tree, and instead walking down the galleries of the grandiose mausoleum of the ephemeral Valmese Empire, now once again a simple principality among others. And her objective-

"Is it still far?" Kan'ei called their guide. "I feel like we've been here for hours."

"It has been merely fifteen minutes. Do not worry, the resting place of our former lord isn't far away."

- was the sepulture of the late Walhart the Conqueror. More specifically, a certain gem that had apparently been buried with him.

She probably should have done it a long time ago. Though in retrospect, maybe it was a good thing she didn't. Had she remembered to take Vert when the Valmese emperor was defeated, and offered it to Chrom then, the gem would probably be in Plegia's hands by now. In that respect, it was also a small blessing she still had the Star Orb, Azure, in her possession. Without the Shield of Seals, their use would be greatly diminished, but they would have their uses nonetheless. And if - when they managed to retrieve the Fire Emblem from Plegia's clutches... then maybe, just maybe...

"Please, be more vigilant, my lady. It wouldn't do for the Voice of Naga to trip in a dark hallway." Kan'ei lowered her voice. "I also don't trust that man who's leading us. Have you noticed the way he looks at you?"

"I swear, you fret as much as Say'ri sometimes."

Silently though, she couldn't help but agree with her bodyguard assessment. While the Valmese tone and body language was calculated to project obsequiousness, his gaze when he believed she wasn't looking was almost predatory. If this turned to be a trap, then it was quite possible Vert was already gone from this place. Still, she had to be sure. And if worst come to worst, well.

It wouldn't be her first battle. Nor her last.

The group continued their progress, before finally entering a vast room, statues of imposing knights standing guard over an open sarcophagus. There was no trace of a body, or the gem.

Unfortunate, if not entirely unexpected.

"I have to say," announced their guide, all trace of deference replaced in his voice by a triumphant tone "when I heard you delivered yourself at our doorstep, I couldn't believe it. But here we are. Master Grima will reward me greatly for this."

The man produced a dark tome from his robes, as Kan'ei drew her sword, assuming a defensive stance to protect her. The eye of Grima was displayed on its cover for the world to see, while plaintive groans coming from the nearby hallways told Tiki quite a number of Risen were on their way too. Strangely enough, her first thought was that Say'ri would never let her heard the end of it if she ever learned of today. Her second was to wonder how many Grimleal found their way in Valm. Did they come right after Walhart's defeat? Questions for later.

"Now, give Azure to me, and I'll make your deaths as painless as possible. This deep underground, there is no hope for you to fly away, oracle of the false goddess."​

That much was true, Tiki supposed. Then again, the large room gave her more than enough space to assume her draconic form. Good enough, as far as she was concerned. As the Risen began to enter the funeral grounds, her mind turned to her friends. Was this how Nowi died? Chrom? Panne?

... could she have saved them, had she been there?

She would never know. All she could do now was to avenge them, even by proxy. Play her part, and make things right, one way or another. And think of them the next time she'll gaze upon the stars. Her whole body began to glow, as she was bathed in Naga's essence.

"Well."

A divine light engulfed the room as her appearance began to change, and the unmasked Grimleal recoiled in fear, the false sense of security his reinforcements gave him all but shattered. A humourless smile formed on Tiki's lips.​

"This might get unpleasant."

Chapter 2-23: A divine omen? (autumn 2623)
You wake up drenched in sweat. Was that... a dream? It felt nothing like the images that usually haunted your sleep though. Did you just have a vision of Tiki? And if so, was it from the past, the future, or was it happening right now? Was she in danger?

You take a few minutes to gather your thoughts. It is hard to recall the details of the dream, but it didn't feel like an omen of death. Whatever trouble the Voice of Naga found herself into, you have to believe she'll be able to overcome them - and if that vision came from Naga herself, you certainly hope she wouldn't be so cruel as to show you a fate you'd have no hope of changing. But while your memories of the dream are blurry, there is one thing that seems imprinted in your mind.

The Fire Emblem.

Truth be told, you don't know much about it. It was one of the treasures of Ylisse, gifted to the first Exalt by Naga herself, but it was stolen before you were born, that night when your aunt Emmeryn was murdered. You never felt the need to ask about the relic; in fact you're not entirely sure what it looks like, though you think it might have the shape of a shield. Yet your dream seemed to stress its significance. Or where the gems the important part? You hold back a groan. As if you didn't have enough things to worry about.

Still, you may have to look into it. Hopefully your schedule won't disagree too much. On the plus side, this dream seems to have invigorated you. You are wide awake despite the early hour, and brimming with energy. You're just not sure how to use it.

[] Try to find out more about the Fire Emblem. If this artefact is truly significant, you have to at least learn the basics. You're sure there must be some books in the library covering the subject, and aunt Lissa probably knows something as well. The end of summer is deceptively quiet. The mood have been improved after the Plegian offensive was halted, but the same thought is shared by everyone: this is a reprieve, not the end. Virion moved his headquarters toward the frontlines, bringing many Shepherds with him. Henry, Libra, Vaike, Ricken, Cherche and Kellam go join those already holding the line. Even the regency council is fragmented. Mother is constantly in and out of Ylisstol alongside Cordelia, Duke Themis went back to his war-torn lands to organize a relief effort, and Duke Karan remains in Virion's council. Caught between hope and despair, all of Ylisse holds its breath.

Yet those people might be the ones you'll have to rely on later as an Exalt. Spending some time to start knowing even one of them better could be a precious boon, and perhaps it could also be an interesting learning opportunity.

Urgh. Hope I didn't forget anything.

While I'm at it, I wanted the opinion of the voters. @Prodigal Knight reminded me that due to the way I set up this quest, it's often hard to interact with different characters when they're not part of the "endless training montage" I've got going. Now, some of them manage to break through from time to time (and the training montage isn't actually endless) but it's a limitation that can be hard to overcome nonetheless.

Right now, a potential solution that could be implemented would be that each turn, the voters get to put forward the name of a character they want some interaction with. While there wouldn't be any mechanical gain from it, it'll help bring some forgotten characters into the story... or just a way to have a fan-favourite show up, that works too.

In the end, you decide that learning more about the Fire Emblem itself would be pointless as long as you don't know where it is. And by learning about its theft, you hope to find out the motives anyway.

The obvious person to interrogate first is Aunt Lissa. You remember Father mentioning she was in the palace that night, and you doubt she'd have forgotten such dramatic events so easily. Though the memories are clearly unpleasant for her, she still answers you the best she can. Unfortunately, she cannot tell you much. Most of the assassins managed to get away after killing Emmeryn and injuring Chrom, with the Fire Emblem nowhere to be found. At the time, they had suspected the item to have been brought to the Mad King Gangrel - she recalls a border incident where he made a specific demand for the artefact in order to appease the tensions between the two ocuntries - but after he was killed and Plegia Castle occupied, the Fire Emblem was nowhere to be found.

As for why Plegia wanted the Fire Emblem, Lissa can only guess. She does remember that it played a role in Grima's defeat a thousand years ago, so maybe it was a way to make sure it couldn't be used in that capacity again? You guess it is plausible, but the implications are terrifying - there would be no need for it unless Grima was slated to return. Still you refuse to jump to conclusions. There might be something else behind its disappearance.

"Hmm. Well if you want to learn more, maybe you could ask Gaius."

You blink. Gaius? What does he have to do with this story? Aunt Lissa awkwardly deflects your question.

"Weeeeell, he had a... colourful past. He really should be the one to tell you about it though. But I guess since he's at the border right now, you'll have to wait for the next time he's back in Ylisstol."

You stay silent.

"I mean, it's the only solution unless - oh no."

You stay silent.

"... please don't tell Sumia I was the one to give you the idea."

When you announce Mother your desire to visit the frontlines, you expect having to argue for your case. Instead she seems to have expected it, simply asking you your reasons. Truth be told, talking to Gaius is only part of it. Staying stuck in Ylisstol as people fight and die for Ylisse feels wrong. You are still too young to join in the fight, but at the very least, you need to see the situation with your own eyes. Mother doesn't object, though you can tell she doesn't like the idea of you being so close from Plegian forces one bit. All she asks is to wait the beginning of winter before making the move, at a season where both armies should be less active, and to have some time to try to divert Plegian attention. As you watch her beginning to plan for your travel, you're struck by a realization.

During this last year, Mother had rarely been on your mind. You were grateful for the comfort she provided in a time of grief, and felt fear each time she went out with the pegasus knights on the front, but you never really stopped to consider how she was feeling. Your own grief and trying to help Cynthia kept you busy enough. Still, as you watch her now, you realize how much she has changed.

You know better than most the weight of expectation. You're still in training, but you can already feel the pressure your future role as Exalt will ask of you. At the very least, it was a role you knew from the start that would end up entrusted to you, if maybe not quite that soon. But what then of Sumia, second daughter of a minor noble house, who now found herself queen-regent of Ylisse despite the odds? You know she did her best to support Father when he was still alive, learning about politics and trade and diplomacy despite having no natural inclination toward those, just so she could be of help to him. And now it has come to this.

You cannot help but ask. "I thought... I thought you'd be against it."

You're answered by a tired sigh. "I don't like it, but I understand" Sumia says. "I wish I could just protect you, that I could end this war before you ever have to fight in it. But I know some wishes don't come true."Her tone grows wistful. "I was blessed with a wonderful husband. I am still blessed with two incredible daughters. Asking for more would be greedy, I think. I'll just keep doing my best, and hope it makes a difference. And I know you're doing that too, so I'll try to help when I can."

You were always told you took a lot more from Father, and that is an assessment you never disagreed with. Yet as you watch Mother push aside her own grief and worries day after day, in order to support both Ylisse and her family, you realize you might have inherited something from her after all.

On an impulse, you throw yourself in her arms, and allow yourself to be a twelve year old again. The people of Ylisse need an Exalt, not a child. But you don't need a mask in front of Mother. And while the sudden embrace surprises her, it is readily returned. And while the last year made her more silent, more sad... her warmth and her smile is still the same. After all that happened, it's a comforting fact.

Your departure for the western border is still in a few weeks, meaning your lessons with Maribelle are still on the table. And apparently the noblewoman has decided that if you're going to leave for a time, it just means she has to up the pace to compensate. Still, since that episode with Noire and Tharja, you feel like the two of you are closer. You have always respected her of course, and you think she was already happy with you as a student, but now there's a certain complicity between the two of you that wasn't there before.

She tells you that Noire did come to visit her a few times to get some pointers, or simply ask questions she didn't want to bother her mother with. Maribelle is a bit worried about Noire's health - and doesn't hide her distrust for dark magic in general - but so far nothing really bad happened, as far as she can tell, and she managed to get Brady on board to regularly check on her now that Libra is away. Though she does wonder about those 'fits of temper' that crops up sometimes.

In return you talk to her about your experiences while attending the regency councils. She's not unaware of the specifics of course; apparently Aunt Lissa often seek her advices, and with her own father being a part of it, she tends to have all the details. Still she seems interested in your own opinion, and is definitely supportive of you attending when you can.

Also she doesn't seem that fond of the various dukes beside her father, but you wonder if it could just be a family rivalry thing.

Maribelle also tells you that starting next year, she's thinking of modifying the format of her lessons. Now that she believes you have a solid foundation in most topics expected of a ruler, it might be possible to turn the three classes she gives you into a single broader one. In an ideal world, that's the opposite of what should be done, but given the urgency of the times - and your occasional propensity to sometimes make your own, she wryly adds - it might be a better idea to lighten up your load when it comes to your timetable. It's not like you'd use the extra time to slack off anyway.

That, you think, could definitely be useful.

Maribelle isn't wrong, time is something you often lacks off. And you know that you'd make little progress with just a few weeks in your slow-paced military studies, before they'd be inevitably cut short once you leave. Sir Duncan quickly surrenders to your arguments that given the circumstances, you'll be better served attending Virion's meetings, and promises to use the time to prepare more material for you to study afterwards.

The conciliatory approach isn't always the most appropriate however.

You decide to give Lord Harrowmont a second chance. However, this time you make your displeasure at his previous attempts of flattery obvious. Maybe you are getting used to high standards when it comes to your tutors, but given the circumstances, you can no longer afford to be patient with incompetence. The man turns white at your words, but seems to comply, simply covering Ylisse's internal market without superfluous comments. You probably didn't make a friend, but that wasn't what you needed in the first place.

You eventually managed to convince Severa and Kjelle to let everyone interested come. Which means your next session will be a lot more crowded than usual. You expect things might get a bit chaotic at first, but hopefully nothing to bad, surely?

You quickly begin to wonder that maybe you've done a terrible mistake.

"Ahah! Your spirit is commendable, fiery maiden, but know that the great Owain Dark won't be so easily vanquished!"
"Oh my gawd shutupshutupshutup!"

Well okay sure. You knew putting Owain and Severa together would not be easy at first. What was really worrying you now though was that despite the constant bickering, name-calling and even occasional hair-pulling... they were maybe the only ones getting something done. Probably because Severa was now ready to rip your cousin's head off, which in turn made him double down on the theatrics, making for a rather intense sparring session.

Meanwhile, your sister and Kjelle had... troubles.

"For Naga's sake! How?! How do you trip on thin air?! And what's with this way to hold a spear? It's not a magic wand!"
"I know that, you meanie! And it's just those boots, I'm not used to them yet! There's no need to shout!"

On one hand, Kjelle was the only one in your group who could help Cynthia with a spear. On the other hand, she wasn't the most patient toward beginners. At the very least the fact that your sister didn't take the verbal abuse lying down showed she was in good spirits?

Then you had Noire and Nah. The general idea was to have the archer aim at the manakete, making one work on their accuracy while the other would train her flight and dodging skills. The only problem was that Noire was rather intimidated by being faced by a live dragon, making even nocking an arrow a challenge, up until frustration took over, which wasn't much better because at that point, she just threw the bow at a bemused Nah's face. So yeah, that was a work in progress.

You'll get on that later. For now, you wanted to focus on Inigo. You were probably the most qualified of the group to help him and it was an occasion to engage with him after that long time away from each other. He seems a little intimidated, but Severa had been right: there's a certain eagerness when it comes to learning sword-craft. He simply needs to relax a bit. When you tell him just that, he offers a shy smile.

"I know. Dad always tell me to show more confidence. It's just... it's not easy, you know?"

You can imagine. For now, you'll take what you can get and evaluate his level. Your first assessment is promising. He doesn't seem to have a fixed style yet - you notice he has a basic understanding of Chon'sin style, you recognize a couple of moves that Owain uses, and he has some notions of a more academic school of fighting - probably something used by the knights of Rosanne? Nonetheless, he doesn't seem to have really committed to one yet. In terms of physicality, you can tell he might benefit from a few work-outs; there's little power behind his strikes, and he seems to tire easily. That being said, he is rather fast, and his footwork is excellent. Yeah, you think you can work with that.

It's also nice to reconnect a bit. While still shy, he seems to make more of an effort to get out of his shell than four years ago. He is rather enthusiastic when you get him to talk about his life in Rosanne, and confess a love for novels. When you bring up his old passion for dancing though, he closes up once again, visibly embarrassed. Ah. Too soon then. Well, there's no need to rush.

On the other hand, your training sessions with Lon'qu go a lot better. With Say'ri's lessons fresh in your mind, and seemingly a good deal of energy to burn through, you tackle your lessons with enthusiasm. By this point, flowing from one stance through another is almost second nature to you. Soaring dragon follows roots of the mountain, before ending with eight step lotus. You tirelessly practice the strikes Lon'qu taught you, while he's watching with a critical eye. That he doesn't make any comment is a point of pride: if you're at a point where he doesn't find flaws to correct, clearly you're doing something right.

"Hm. I don't think I have much left to teach you."

The admission takes you by surprise. You're happy with your progression, but surely there's more to it? Your master simply shrugs.

"Training helps, but it can't replace real-life experience. You know the steps, you know the strikes. Now what matters is remembering them in the midst of battle."

You suppose that makes sense. Still...

"Maybe there's one last thing" he grunts. "Not sure how to go about it though." You wait patiently as he explains. "I was born in Chon'sin, but most of my teenage years were in Ferox. It's something no-one explained to me, I had to figure it out on my own after watching others in the arena."

That would certainly explain his rougher and more pragmatic approach to the Chon'sin style. If he had to learn most of it from scratch, he had to pick up what worked for him and what did not on the fly. That he managed to reach a level where he could be considered one of the best swordsman on both continents was a testament to his resourcefulness, though you could see how it'd make teaching you more difficult.

"No choice then. Come at me."

You don't even discuss it. "Should I stick with Chon'sin style, or-"

"Use whatever you feel like. In a fight, only the result matters."

How very much like him. You can't quite suppress the grin on your face. Testing yourself against your teacher is something you had been looking forward. You don't expect to win, but you're determined to give a good showing. The two of you grab a training sword, and without a word the match begins.

Lon'qu is incredibly polished. He might have taught you everything he knew, but his swordsmanship was refined by dozens of battles, making it as natural as breathing to him. Also, he is blindingly fast, having you outclassed by a decent margin in that department. And you were hardly slow! Combine that with his greater size and reach, and you're in for a world of troubles. To make matter worse, he is clearly quite familiar with your own royal style, seamlessly adapting to the variations in your swordplay.

Still, as you grit your teeth against his onslaught, you do your best to leverage the few advantages you have over him. It's clear that you're a bit stronger than him, and while fighting in three wars gave a wealth of experience, the various battles left their mark on the veteran. If you manage to turn this in a contest of endurance, then you might be able to prevail. You focus on defending, parrying the strikes you can't dodge while trying to maintain your blades locked to slow his constant barrage, pushing back every time you can to break his momentum. And for a minute, your plan seems to work, as you feel Lon'qu slowing down.

And suddenly his blade is everywhere.
Technique activated: Astra. A storm has come.
You're flat on the ground before realizing what happened, your hard breaths echoing those of your master. You hurt everywhere. Did he hit you in the stomach? The shoulder? The leg? Probably all of the above, and more.

"What was that?" you manage between two gaps.

"Don't know the name. Just saw it once, so I decided to reproduce it. What do you think?"

You stay silent for a moment before getting back on your feet. "Show me again."

By the end of it, you're covered in bruises, but you don't feel like you've made too much progress. after seeing it a couple of times, you managed to understand that the technique relied upon five consecutive strikes, with barely a hairbreadth between each other, the first attack opening up your guard and leaving you exposed to the following blows. Yet even after being on the receiving end of it a couple more times, you can't quite figure how to perform it. There's no warning in Lon'qu's posture, no telltale sign to look out for and that you could try to replicate. Just him suddenly unleashing an attack too fast for the eye to follow, and you ending up on the ground as a result. The best you can manage is to doge the first strike and block the second, which still leaves you at the mercy of the next three.

Lon'qu seems to notice your frustration. "Once you're on the border, find Say'ri. Maybe she can help."

You nod. That had been your intention all along, but now you had an extra motivation to do so. Still, as you replay the previous bouts against Lon'qu in your head, trying to understand what you have been missing, you don't notice the strange glance directed at you.

"You're a scary kid, you know that?" That snaps you out of your thoughts. "Didn't think someone could reach that level of skill this fast. And you hit almost as hard as your father. For a moment I thought you were going to break my bad arm once again."

His tone is as dry as ever, but you can hear the approval in his voice. The realisation that you pushed your mentor to his limits is... heartening. Thanks to him, to Say'ri, to Father, you've come far enough that getting to their level is no longer a simple childish dream, but a goal that seems to be within reach. And you don't intend to stop.

"Okay. One more time then!"
"Tss. Give me a break."

Most of your free time, however, is spent among the regency council. With two members missing for the foreseeable future, and Mother only occasionally able to attend, the room almost feels empty. The amount of work to do, however, remains the same. While Ylisse as a whole hasn't suffered too much from the war yet, the western provinces are in a sorry state. And should more men be needed in the army, there might be worries for the next harvests. In that respect being able to call upon allied nations has been a pretty big relief.

However after a few days, you begin to notice a certain tension in those meetings that didn't seem to be there before. At first you simply chalk it up to the ongoing war - who wouldn't be tense in that kind of situation - but after a while you can't shake the feeling that there might be more to it. Aunt Lissa seems to be in a perpetually fool mood these days, and Dukes Lurelin and Arnelle seem pretty dissatisfied themselves, though they do a good job of hiding it. Minor disagreements, that would hardly matter under normal circumstances, seem to multiply.

Yarne, of all people, is the one to give you a clue on what could be going on. Your taguel friend is now a common sight around you when you go to these meetings, his presence hardly noticed by the others due to his withdrawn nature. And as such, it appears the adults might sometime overlook his presence when yours is sure to garner some attention. Apparently, he witnessed a pretty big fight between Aunt Lissa and Duchess Arnelle over the opportunity to open negotiations with Plegia.

On an intellectual level, it makes sense to you. This war wasn't one Ylisse wanted, Plegia doesn't seem to have a clear objective, and with the two armies in a stalemate right now, any chance to end it should at least be explored.

But that voice of reason is drowned by your instinctive disgust at the idea of having to sit down and talk with those who murdered your father.

Also, Yarne tells you he saw Arnelle and Lurelin in pretty intense talks both before and after the councils. That isn't abnormal in itself, but if there's a rift growing between them on one side and Aunt Lissa on the other, this might spell real trouble down the line. Until now, you remained an attentive observer, but now you wonder if maybe you should try to throw your weight in the balance? You're not sure it'd work though, and it might even make things worse.

You remember Father expressing frustration at having to engage in politics since he became Exalt; you think you're beginning to get it now.

In contrast, your new plan to walk down the streets of Ylisstol is almost relaxing in its simplicity; with a single guard serving as escort - a necessary concession - you are allowed to meet the local citizens, this time not while hiding like you did with Gaius a long time ago, but in your quality as princess of Ylisse. You listen to their worries and their fears for the future first-hand. More than one already lost a loved one in this war, or even in the previous ones, which is something you can unfortunately relate to. Yet almost all of them seem to trust you. More than once, you hear them singing the praises of your late aunt or your father. Even your mother is mentioned, her recent battles on the border giving hope that despite the ruinous battle at Plegia Castle, Ylisse can still prevail in this war. And as far as they are concerned, your actions already proved you would follow in their footsteps.

It is both humbling and terrifying. They are all counting on you; you cannot afford to betray their trust.

Morale in Ylisstol seems to be improving a little.

Random event: secret admirer - redux?

As the planned day for your departure grows closer, there seems to be a shadow following your footsteps. At first you think it might be Yarne back at his old antics, but you are disabused of that notion when you catch a glimpse of blonde, almost white haired head diving behind a pillar as you turn around.

"... Morgan?"

No answer. You're pretty sure you heard a 'eep' though. And now you're not sure what to do. It's not the first time you have to deal with an overly skittish person, but contrary to Yarne who was (is?) basically scared of everyone, Morgan seemed only timid toward you, as far as you could tell, which might make an attempt at direct interaction difficult. Then again she's apparently following you now, which means... something? Maybe you should go through Nah instead? Still, you admit you are rather curious about Robin's youngest daughter...

Chapter 2-25: Morgan
[x] Go talk to Morgan directly.

For a moment, you hesitate to simply go to Nah and ask for advice. But in the end, you've always been in favour of the straightforward approach - except sometimes when Tharja is involved. Since the eight year old manakete is quite a bit less intimidating than the dark mage, you might as well see what she wants right now.

As you thought, Morgan is the one hiding behind the pillar. As she realizes she's been discovered, the young girl seems to consider potential escape routes, apparently settling down on the nearest window - making you slightly panic until you remember she can fly - and is in the process of going through it when you gently put a hand on her shoulder.

"Please wait. Can we talk for a bit?"

The girl freezes, but doesn't try to bolt, which you take as a good sign. Slowly turning around, Morgan does her best to appear innocent, a guilty smile on her face.

"Um. Hi?"

She's clearly nervous, and by now, you have observed her enough to know you seem to be the cause of that, even if you're not sure why or how. Unlike Yarne, who always seemed to struggle with his fears, Morgan seemed to be a naturally cheerful girl with a somewhat reckless side, as long as you didn't enter the picture. Meaning you have to be careful to not spook her off now. Removing your hand, you make a point of taking a step back to give her space not let herself feel cornered - sometimes you think your interactions with Yarne might have given you too much experience at those kinds of situation.

"Don't worry, you're not in trouble" you reassure her. "Am I scaring you?"

To your surprise, Morgan immediately nods. "You've a scary face."

Huh? Well, not quite what you expected. You're not sure if that's the whole truth, but you suppose that compared to someone like Cynthia or Owain, your more stern demeanour might come off as intimidating to an eight-year old, not to mention the size difference. Still, it kind of stings.

On the plus side, your dismayed expression is enough to make the young manakete giggle. Progress, you suppose?

"I... see. I'll... try to work on that then?" No idea how to do that, but that'll be a question for later. "Still, if you think I'm scary, why did you follow me?"

Morgan seems to consider your question seriously, looking at you as if you were an enigma to solve. Given the previous comment on your face, you can't help but feel a little self-conscious. Finally, she answers with disarming honesty. "I wanted to find out why dad likes you more than me."

"... What?" If her first answer took you by surprise, this one seems to come out of nowhere. "I... I don't understand. Why would you think-?"

It's hard to sort out the emotions you're feeling right now. Having a little girl thinking her parent favored you more than her is a rather depressing situation, but it doesn't quite match up your own experience with her father. And of course, the fact that she's talking about the one who ended up killing your own father leaves you less than happy with the declaration either. Taking a deep breath, you do your best to compose yourself and try to find out what she meant.

"Okay. Why do you think Robin likes me more than you?"

"Well, dad spends most of his time here, right? And he told me once he was teaching you stuff. Tactician stuff, I mean. So if he's here more than with me, that means he likes you more."

She seems almost proud of her reasoning, and you can't really fault her internal logic. Of course, that Robin stayed in Ylisstol had little to do with you, and him teaching you was only a tiny part of his week, but for Morgan, the facts she knew could only lead to that conclusion.

"But your father didn't stay here just to see me."

"Eh?" Morgan seems doubtful. "When he's home, he says it's just to see me! And big sister." she adds almost as an afterthought.

"Well, you are his daughter" you do your best to explain. "But he had work to do here. He only taught me when he had a little time and wasn't too busy."

Come to think of it, why did he? Given what happened later, it didn't really make sense that it'd take some time in his schedule for you, if he planned to betray you all from the start. Was it a whim? Was there a hidden purpose to it? You suppress a groan; it's usually hard enough to think about Robin without your vision turning red, but right now it's even harder due Morgan being here. You don't think that 'by the way, I want to kill your dad for what he did' would endear yourself to her.

"Oh. That makes sense. You're sure it's not because he likes you and Laurent more?"

"Certain." Well, that's a lie - you're not certain of anything when it comes to Robin - but that's the only answer you can give right now.

"Yay! Okay then!" And just like that, Morgan seems to cheer up. How she can be so carefree given the circumstances, you have no idea. But then again, what does she know of the circumstances? You doubt Nah simply told her 'by the way, our dad is a traitor now'.

You decide to test the waters. "You know your father isn't here right now?"

"Yup!" Morgan proudly answers. "Big sis told me he couldn't come home right now. It's okay though. It happens a lot with him! I'll just study hard and show him what I learned next time I see him!"

You try hard not to scowl. Of course she doesn't know. And since she seems used to not having her father around for long periods of time, him being missing won't strike her as unusual. For now at least. "And... what about your mother?" Even just asking makes you feel like a bully, but you want to understand where Morgan is coming from.

"Oh, it was so cool! She helped us by fighting bad guys! She turned into a dragon and grawr! She breathed fire and all! I can't even do that! Yet."

You feel a cold shiver going down your spine. What?

"It'd be cool if she was here... But she always forget the time. It's because she's veeeeery old, you know? It's like, a month later, and she thinks it was yesterday! I hope she comes soon."

That... feels wrong. Morgan is a lot of things, but you don't believe she'd be that oblivious, not after witnessing at least part of what happened. And you don't think Nah would lie to her - though obviously she wouldn't say Nowi was dead either, not without definite proof. This situation was a complete mess, and having this young, happy girl in the middle of it was the epitome of unfair.

"Anyway, thanks! I guess I was worried for nothing. See ya!" All traces of her earlier apprehension gone, Morgan cheerfully waves at you as she begin to walk away.
