Hope will never die : a Fire Emblem Awakening quest

Chapter 1-4: A night to remember (spring 2619)
Okay, so I reworked a bit how character relation work in this quest. Basically, you now a letter value, plus some qualifiers (for instance : Say'ri D (cool teacher). The letter basically indicates how often you are in this character thoughts, while the qualifiers are more indicative of how they think of you (meaning you can have a A with someone and absolutely terrible relations with that person.) It is quite easy to raise your relation to rank E or D, since those basically mean the concerned party remembers you exist. It should be harder to raise links above C and B, though that also depends on the person (easier to raise those parameters with a family member, for instance).

Anyway, I hope this is a bit clear, don't hesitate to ask questions or point out what you think won't work.

[X] Noire, Nah and the sleeping Morgan
[X] Cynthia, Inigo and Brady

[] Cynthia, Inigo and Brady

Deciding to enjoy Brady's music, you move over toward the small group, your sister scooting over to make you some space when she sees you approaching. You sit next to her, letting the violin sounds resonate. While you have heard that Lady Maribelle was growing desperate about the hope of correcting her son's speech (in that respect, he was Gregor's child through and through), clearly some of her lessons were sticking.

When he is finished, he is on the receiving end of three heartfelt clapping hands. You do not think yourself to be a musical expert, but you'd like to think you can recognize quality when you see it. And Inigo should definitely know about those things, and he seems as impressed as you and Cynthia. Your sister lets out a whistle.

"Wow, you've gotten really good!"

Brady simply shrugs off the compliment, though.

"Nah, just somethin' I do fer fun. And since Ma likes it, then why the hell not. Better than all that malarkey that they're trying to stuff me with, I say."

That you can sympathise with, to an extent. While you'd never dream of issuing the same complaints (and certainly not like that), the expectations placed over a scion of nobility could be... taxing. And you suspected you hadn't seen the worse of it yet. Still, you didn't like seeing your friend selling himself short like that.

"Whatever your reasons, you should be proud of your talents, I think."
"Hey, wasn't it dad who said that when..."

You try to shush your sister. So what if you were maybe parroting father? It was still good advice! Brady seems to take it in stride though, simply grunting uncommittedly.

"Why don't you try jawin' that to the guy over here? Heard he got really good at this dance stuff, still won't show me a thing."

Your gaze trails toward Inigo, who instantly blush while looking at the ground.

"Well, it's embarrassing."
"Aaaw, but I wanted to see! I mean, mom and dad aren't very good at this stuff."

You shudders at the memory your sister just awakened. You did recall seeing them on a dance floor once... The results weren't pretty. Shaking your head, you decide to focus on the matter at hand.

"Cynthia, if Inigo doesn't want to give us a demonstration, you shouldn't pressure him. Unless you'd like to sing us that pegasus limerick I heard you sing the other day?"

That gets you an horrified "Lucy!" from her, and a relieved smile from Inigo. He always had been pretty shy, as far as you remember. You can only hope him leaving for Rosanne won't be too hard on him. Now that you think of it, Brady had been the one to try to get him out of his shell the most, and standing by him when the other's teasing went a bit too far. He's probably worried about his friend too.

"Ah, well. Figured that was worth a try. Haven't gave up on you and me doing somethin' together, you hear? You better remember that next time we meet, all right?"

Inigo smiles and give a small nod.

"Yeah. I'll make sure to be ready next time, then."
"That's the spirit! And Lucy and I will be there to cheer you guys up!"

You smile at your sister's enthusiasm. That would indeed be a sight you wouldn't miss for anything in the world.

[X] Noire, Nah and the sleeping Morgan

You then decide to check upon the duo of manakete and Noire. The later seems busy cooing over Morgan, under the tolerant gaze of her elder sister.

"... I'm just saying, she seems nice now, but she's a nightmare when awake."
"O-oh. I'm sure it can't be that bad?"

As you sit down next to them, the two girls turn to you, and Nah immediately decides to take you as her witness.

"Back me up here, Lucina! With Cynthia around, you should know how this is, right?"
"I don't know what to say to you. I have no complaint about my sister whatsoever."
"Bah, you're no fun."

Well, maybe you do have a few things to say. But it wouldn't do for an older sister to disparage her own family in public – and mother doesn't like it much when you two are complaining about each other, not that it happens too often. Next to you, Noire sighs happily.

"Ah, I wish I had a little sister..."

Your answer "It is pretty great" comes mixed with Nah's "it's overrated." You three exchange a glance, before all being caught by a fit of giggles. Next to you, Morgan makes a bubbling noise that you choose to take as an approval. That light-hearted moment comes to an end when Nah's smile begins to fade.

"I wish... I wish I didn't have to leave."

You and Noire exchange a glance, not quite sure what to say. Truthfully, the news had taken everyone by surprise. With Robin being one of father's closest advisors, that his family would remain in Ylisstol never had been in doubt. And yet..

"You really don't know why you're leaving?"

Nah only shakes her head.

"I don't think even mom knows. Father pretty much did everything. I wonder if that has something to do with the nightmares..."
"Nightmares?"
"I don't know, I had some pretty bad dreams these last weeks. Which is strange, because I thought, now that mother and father are here, everything would be okay, right? But I saw that... big, black dragon, and... I think Morgan makes those dreams too, at least he's waking up more at night. But I talked about the dreams to Father, and he seemed to grow worried. Acouple of days later, he tells us we two will leave soon with mother, muttering something about 'plegians spies'. I don't know. I don't understand any of it, and he won't tell me anything, and I'm leaving you all...!"

Noire puts an hand on the young manakete's shoulder, trying to comfort her, while you scramble for words that might help.

"It... it is not the end, though."

The other two girls look at you, and you try to put on a brave face, gazing into the starry night.

"We'll meet again like this, I'm sure of it. We'll look at the stars together, like tonight. So... it is not the end."

Nah's smile gradually come back, a mixture of sadness and hopefulness.

"Ah... I'll hold you to it, then."

The three of you fall in a comfortable silence, content in simply looking at the sky. You don't know what tomorrow will look like, but for now... this is sufficient.

***

As expected, your group of friends is split up in the coming weeks. Still, you don't have much time to miss them, given your busy schedule. As the first days of spring come, you begin to wonder of the things you want to do in the coming months...

[X] Sword training (ylissean royal style) (LOCKED)
[X] History and customs of Ylisse (LOCKED)
[X] Etiquette lessons (LOCKED)

Your lessons continue. While you can now honestly say your sword training is everything you had hoped it'd be, the rest is still pretty fastidious. Still, this is expected of you, and you hate to disappoint. (choose 6 actions)

[] Ask for new teachers
: you don't have anything against lady Armelle and sir Ogham, really, you don't. But those tutors, appointed in your parents absence, have trouble keeping your attention. Maybe you could ask if someone else would be available to teach you?

[] Ask Lon'qu for Chon'sin style lessons : without Say'ri around, the Feroxi champion is the only one you can turn to who's around on a semi-regular basis. Only problem is, you don't think he likes you all that much...

[] Help Libra at Naga's shrine : you saw how much work healing those in need could be for Libra ; and you wonder if maybe you could be of use. An Exalt's duty is to its people, and what better way to help them? You lack experience in that domain, true, but you refuse to make it an excuse to do nothing.

[] Spend time in the library : while books never quite held the same appeal as swords to you, you also know that knowledge is a necessary tool for any ruler deserving of the name. And at the very least, you are decided not to be a disappointment on that front
  • [] Any specific topic in mind? (no extra action)

[] Spend time in the stables : between your mother and Cherche's lessons, you have become more eager to learn about the best ways to care about animals these last weeks. And what better way to learn than to spend time with them? Well, it would be pretty strenuous, probably.

[] Continue your flying lessons : this first taste of the sky makes you want to do more. Mother already proposed you and Cynthia to join her and Cordelia for some aerial exercises. You already know what your sister will answer, and you admit the prospect of learning more is tempting.

[] Studying Wyvere Physiologos : the book Cherche gave you contains a lot of informations, too much to be assimilated all at once. Still, if you want to be serious about this wyvern matter, you'll need to put some effort in. Maybe studying the theory will prove useful someday...

[] Frederick's Fitness Day : one frustrating thing about being seven : being so small. Yet, in your eyes, that's no reason to slack off. It is only natural, then, to seek the stern guardian of the Shepherds for some early training. Still, you wonder why everyone seems terrified when you tell them about your plan...

[] Double down on your lessons : studying is one thing, but things worth doing are worth doing well.
  • [] Sword training (Ylissean royal style)
  • [] History and customs of Ylisse
  • [] Etiquette lessons

[] Quality time with your sister : Cynthia idolizes you, and you couldn't ask for a better sibling yourself. Yet, you feel like you spent the last months trying to be her mother during your parent's absence. Now that they're back, perhaps it is time to relearn being her sister as well.

[] Find a board-game partner : Virion's gift is magnificent, but of limited utility without someone to play with (though you admit simply lining up the figurines for imaginary battles was quite enjoyable in its own right). Surely someone in the palace would be willing to try?

[] Spend time with the other children : with the world at peace, several of your friends left with their families for faraway lands. Even among those who did not leave Ylisse, some are now in the countryside, which to you could as well be the end of the world. Yet several of your friends are still in Ylisstol, should you seek them out.
  • [] Owain
  • [] Severa
  • [] Kjelle
  • [] Brady
  • [] Yarne
  • [] Noire

[] Write-in : thinking hard about it, maybe there's something else you could do?

[] Special - slack off : some of these lessons are... hard to bear. Surely no-one would mind if you were to take it easy on some of them? Or even miss them? (doesn't take a chice, but instead gives one extra choice or each lesson you pick with this option.)

Chapter 1-5: Growing and training (spring-summer 2619)
[X] Help Libra at Naga's shrine
[X] Find a board-game partner
[X] Frederick's Fitness Day
[X] Studying Wyvere Physiologos
[X] Continue your flying lessons
[X] Quality time with your sister
[X] Spend time in the library
- [X] Study Plegia. You know that Ylisse fought them in war, but why? For what reason? Answer these burning questions, and perhaps learn of some Plegian culture. What is it doing today anyhow?
- [X] Study the mercenary situation in Ylisse. They're swords for hire, but what are the rates? Do they have a code of conduct, and if not, why does the kingdom allow them to run amuck?
- [X] Study Valm. Yet another war fought, but why? You want to know how these people lived, what culture they participated in, the organization of their armies, the works. Rationalize the meaning of war, and...what the heck are they doing now?
- [X] Farming techniques. Yes, you have had a fantasy of working on a farm in slacks once in a while. Don't judge!

[X] Sword training (Ylissean royal style) (LOCKED)
[X] History and customs of Ylisse (LOCKED)
[X] Etiquette lessons (LOCKED)

Your usual lessons continue, and you believe you're making progress at last. Well, at the very least, your tutors seem happy with you, so that's definitely an improvement. It is still hard to really get invested in what they have to teach, but at least you're putting in an effort.

Your sword lessons with father, on the other hand, are going great. According to him, you're a natural, and while your small stature is still a hinder when it comes to learn his style, you have mastered the basics. The rigorous exercises seem to have make you grown stronger as well ; at the very least, the training swords don't seem as heavy as before anymore.

[X] Frederick's Fitness Day

Still, if you're too weak to properly use your father's style, then that's what you need to work on. You remember several Shepherds talking on how sir Frederick's training really helped them grow, so obviously, that should be the way to go, right? Right.

When you ask for his help, Frederick instantly agrees to provide you physical training once a week. However, your parents, who were present when you put in your requests, seem strangely reluctant. Your mother almost look afraid, and your father is starring at his guardian, as if trying to warn him of something. The knight seems unaffected, however, and apparently placates his charge with a promise that he would only subject you to a "light training regimen". This time, it is you who glares. You didn't come here for "light"! You silently swear to show him that during your first training session together.

***

This is hell. This is hell this is hell this is hell. Those are the only words that came to you as the victimiser who calls himself a knight makes you run yet another lap around the courtyard. There is no way this qualify as "light training"! Laps, push-ups, jumps, lifting, you feel like you've been at it for hours, yet Frederick keeps you going. A few soldiers coming through the training grounds give you looks of pity, yet none intervene on your behalf to make that torture stop. And they call themselves knights of Ylisse? Cowards!

Finally, your instructor lets you rest, and you solemnly swear that you'll never again get off the ground and take a single step in your life. Still, you're genuinely surprised when he praises your efforts. As you are when you realize that despite your inner protests, you never even thought of stopping before he told you so. And that feeling of having given everything you have? It's exhausting, but... not entirely unpleasant. Huh. Maybe there's something wrong with you.

The next week, as you stand once again before Frederick, submitting yourself once more to this inhumane treatment on purpose, you no longer have any doubt : there is definitely something wrong with you.

Characteristic : endurance raised to E+
Option unlocked : Training from Hell – Frederick edition

[X] Help Libra at Naga's shrine

The sight of Libra helping others have been an inspiring one. You always knew your duty was to "serve your people", but it was a rather abstract notion until now. Well, you decide, no more. The next time you see Libra, you ask him how you can help. He is surprised, but pleased nonetheless, and start giving you instructions, gently guiding you through the motions. During several weeks, you come regularly to Naga's shrine to tend to the sick and injured citizens of Ylisstol the best you can. The sight of a royal princess in this role is quickly noticed, but in these grounds, you know you're no longer a princess ; you're just a healer, and a novice one at that. Nonetheless, you occasionaly hear some whispers, and a name that seems to often come back : Emmeryn. You never knew your aunt, but from what little father told about her, you know it to be high praise indeed. You are not her, however, nor do you wish to be. You simply follow what you feel is right.
"You are doing well, child."
During more quiet times, you keep meditating and talking to Libra. He makes for a pretty good confident, making himself easy to talk to and enduring with grace your complaints about how Frederick is most likely a demonspawn sent to torture you personally – though he does say it is theologically unlikely. Finally, once he thinks you are ready, he teaches you the use of basic healing staffs. It is a complicated process, entirely different than what you're used to ; focusing your willpower in order to cast healing magic is something you never trained for. However, Libra deems your progress satisfactory.

During those weeks, you also happen to meet two of your friends. As it turns out, Brady is also coming here regularly. From what he tells you, while so far it turns out he's terrible with weapons, he may have the making of a pretty good healer, from what his mother told him. The way he says it seems to lack any sort of enthusiasm, but you can never quite tell with Brady. The second meeting happens in more dramatic circumstances, with the sudden sight of a pale Noire, swaying dangerously as she walk through the shrine. Before you can do anything, Libra catches her, quickly evaluating her condition. As he comes to a conclusion, you can swear his look is a mixture of anger and... resignation? Nonetheless, he carries his daughter away to tend to her, and you never learn what happened that day.

[X] Continue your flying lessons
[X] Quality time with your sister

You decide to continue your flying lessons – you enjoy spending time with your mother and sister, and you are quickly coming to the realization that you enjoy flying. This time, you are joined in your endeavour by Knight-Commander Cordelia, who is also all too happy to spend some time with her best friend and godsdaughters.

While the lessons do not include the use of the spear, you are introduced to a myriad of aerial manoeuvers, under the vigilant gaze of your relatives. You have to admit, you are pretty scared at the beginning, but seeing Cynthia laughing while guiding mother's pegasus in a dive is enough for you to defeat your fear ; what kind of big sister would you be if you showed weakness here? And in the end, the anxiety fades. As you learn to know Cordelia and Sumia's mounts, you feel safer and safer, and soon, you take to the sky with the same aplomb as your sister.

You also resolve to use those moments to reconnect with her. You feel like these last months passed away too fast, and you barely got the time to talk to her, which is something you feel pretty bad about. Yet, you have barely begun your conversation that you remember something you can't believe you forgot : it's almost impossible to feel bad around Cynthia. Learning about pegasi with her big sister is the best thing ever, she claims. She confess she had been a little scared after your parents return ; she knows you had to take care of her a lot before, and now that you didn't have to, she had feared you were tired of her. You hotly protest that this would never happen, and quickly find yourself wrapped in her embrace, without being able to say who started it.

In the coming weeks, you find yourself spending much more time with Cynthia. She actually comes to watch some of your training sessions with father and though she doesn't join in, you can see each advanced move you pull off leaves her awed, which in turn means you get a tendency to show off when she's there, to your father's great amusement. You also find yourself coming to her when you have a pegasus-related question you don't want to bother mother with, and she is all too eager to be able to help you. All in all, you feel like the two of you have never been closer.

Random Event : Kjelle's demand

"... and 'lo and behold, turns out this was the Radiant Hero himself!"

Next to you, Cynthia laughs, and you can't quite suppress a smile at Owain's tale. Your cousin always had a knack for telling stories, and was always eager to share them. That made those "time together" shared by the three of you and scheduled by your respective parents rather entertaining – though sometimes, you wonder if Owain is a good influence on your impressionable sister. Still, you quite enjoy those moments.

This one, however, is cut short when a newcomer barges in : Kjelle, as usual clad in her armour – not nearly as heavy as a knight's one, but still – steps into the room, a resolute expression on her face.

"You."

That rather imprecise designation leaves the three of you uncertain. Owain hesitantly points at himself – it wouldn't be the first time the young knight would have called him like that – but she shakes her head.

"No, not you. Lucina."

Well, that's a surprise.

"Yes? Can I help you with anything?"
"I think so, yeah. From what I've heard, you've been putting on some serious training these last months, am I right?"

You nod, still curious to see where this will lead.

"Then I want a spar."

Oh. Maybe you should have seen this coming.

Chapter 1-6: Sparring match with Kjelle (summer 2619)
[X] Accept

You deliver your answer without an hesitation.

"Of course. Shall we join the training grounds?"

Behind you, you hear an energized Owain calling "Dibs on the winner!" while Cynthia let a surprised "Eh?" out. Kjelle, for her part, only smile. You can't but think that it isn't a very nice smile. A few minutes later, the four of you have found a quiet spot in the palace gardens, each with a training weapons. Your sister and your cousin stand of the side, the later apparently intent on... narrating?

"And so! The two warriors knew only one of them would be standing by the end of the day! A cruel fate, to be sure , but destiny always was a harsh mistress! To live or to die, everything would be decided now!"
"Owain, they're not going to kill each other... right?"

You tune them out, focusing on your opponent for the day. You stand at the ready as Kjelle gives her blunted spear an appreciative twirl, before assuming a fighting stance. You have to admit, clad in her heavy armor, and wielding a shield and spear of your size, she certainly seems impressive. You actually feels a small amount of trepidation at the coming fight ; this should be interesting. The knight's footing shifts, and you choose that moment to launch forward, bringing your training blade against a spear hastily raised to guard.

Strength D vs Strength D+. A fearsome clash!

You quickly learn two things in the opening round of the duel. The first : Kjelle is strong. You always knew it, of course, but it's another thing to experience it firsthand. The clash of weapons almost rips your sword from your hand, and her return strike comes close to knock you off your feet. You quickly jump back out of reach, feint left, before readying another assault. This is when you learn the second thing.

Sword D vs Spear D. A daunting challenge.

Spears are annoying. Your second assault is stopped dead in its tracks by a quick thrust, followed by many others. Kjelle's superior reach allows her to press forward at minimal risk, while you struggle to defend without any chance of counter-attack. Fine, if she doesn't give you an opportunity, you'll create one. Anchoring yourself in the ground, you deflect the next strike, letting the blow continue over your head, before rushing inside her guard, confident that she won't be able to use her spear to defend in close quarters.

In that respect, you're right. The problem is, she doesn't have to, as you quickly realize when you see your path blocked by her steel shield. The retaliatory bash sends you staggering a step back, and you barely manage to avoid the following spear sweep aimed at your feet by jumping ahead of it, before back-pedalling to gain some distance. After only a few passes, you're already breathing hard, while Kjelle seems barely tired.

Endurance D- vs Endurance D+. Defeat is looming near...

"Is that all you got?"

You scowl at the disparaging comment. While Sully's daughter is certainly a fearsome adversary, you have no intention to lose that easily. As she lunges to presumably finish you off, you meet her attack head-on, forcing her to halt her advance. You can see her eyes slightly widening in surprise as your two weapons remain locked against each other, without you giving any ground. Your muscles scream in protest against the strain you put them through, but you only grit your teeth and dig your heels deeper.

Willpower D+ vs Willpower D-. Never give up without a fight.

The both of you finally disengage, and before Kjelle can once again assume her stance, you're already on the move. Your first strike is easily deflected by her shield, but when she retaliates, you already moved on her left, your next blow catching her under the arm. With her armour, it is largely ineffective, but she nonetheless staggers a bit, and you press on.

Dexterity C- vs Dexterity E+. The battle turns.

Kjelle's defence is ferocious, retaliating every chance she gets, using her heavier frame to try to push you back. Still, it is becoming apparent that you are much faster than her, and you're intent to fully exploit that advantage. Avoiding brute clashes of strength that would only exhaust yourself even more, you stay constantly on the move, your blade darting left and right to keep the knight off balance. Finally, when you sense her defences wavering, you explode in a flurry of movements, unleashing everything you have left.

Ylissean Royal Style E+ vs - . A princess' strength.

The familiar moves learned with your father come naturally, as your blows progressively gain in strength. While Kjelle is still physically your better, she seems to not know how to react, her standard style leaving her unprepared for the sudden onslaught. As she moves to catch a blow aimed at her head, you manage to switch your guard at the last moment, and with a two-handed strike, rip the lance out her hands, sending it flying. Before she gets a chance to react, you're already going low, sweeping her legs with your own. In an instant, she is on the ground, the tip of your sword at her neck and a baffled expression on her face.

You quickly withdraw your weapon, and give your opponent a helping hand, which she takes with a grunt, still slightly out of breath.

"Damn. I really thought I had you for a moment."

"It was a hard fought match.", you agree. You feel absolutely exhausted, barely hearing your sister's cheers in the background. Your right arm feel like he's about to fall off, and your lungs are on fire. Nonetheless, you actually feel quite good about yourself. This had been indeed a close battle, and you're glad to see that all these hours of training are paying off. And Kjelle had hardly been staying idle either, you know Sully is working her to the bone. Yes, you believe you can be proud of this victory, even if this was only a sparing match.

"Well fought, both of you! A display worthy of the future defenders of Ylisse, no doubt!"
"Yeah, sis, that was amazing!"

The two spectators bring you back from your thoughts, as they're coming closer. Which is when you notice Owain has grabbed a sparring sword of his own, and flashes you a smile.

"What says you, cousin? Do you have enough energy for one more round?"

Chapter 1-7: Games and books (summer 2619)
[X] Sorry cousin. Maybe later, I have to rest for a while.

Breath still a bit short, you shake your head.

"Sorry Owain, you'll have to wait for another time. I can barely hold my sword as it is."
"Aaaw."

Kjelle can't help admonish him, a scowling expression on her face.

"Challenging an exhausted opponent right after she finished a match? Don't you have any pride?"
"Oh come on, it was just an idea!"

You have to admit, though, Kjelle's words don't sit entirely right with you. Would an opponent on the battlefield give her enough time to rest? You find that doubtful. Still, you're not about to complain not having to fight your cousin right away. You're not sure of his level with a sword, but you know you would have been hard-pressed to produce a decent performance in your current state. Which is why you're pretty grateful to Cynthia when she comes to you with some water.

"That was great, Lucy! Hey, how's your lip?"

You put a hand over your mouth, where your opponent impacted you with her shield. During the match, you didn't feel it too much, probably due to the adrenaline, but now, you had to admit, it did sting quite a bit - and you think it is beginning to swell. Still...

"It should be fine in a couple of days, don't worry about it."
"If you say so. Still, you got very good! I mean, Kjelle is pretty big."

You smile to your sister.

"You know, you could probably learn too. I'm sure father would be delighted if you asked him."
"Nah, I don't think it's my thing. Fighting looks hard!"

You nod. You did train quite hard to get to this point, and you can't pretend every moment had been pleasant - you shudder when the looming image of Sir Frederick enters your mind. And Cynthia always was more... girly? You know she received basic training with spears, but she never really focused on that, being far more interested by riding a pegasus rather than learning how to fight on it. Well, it's quite alright. If you had anything to say, she would never have to risk her life in battle ; all you had to do was to become strong enough for the both of you.

"Come on, Cynthia. Let's go back."
"All right!"

As you return to the place, you hear Kjelle calling you out.

"Lucina! You better keep up your training, next time won't be so easy!"
"Very well! I'll await your next challenge eagerly!"

Your relation with Kjelle improved.

[X] Studying Wyvere Physiologos

Your busy schedule don't make you forget Cherche's gift. Each day, you read a few pages of the Valmese treaty, learning all you can't about wyverns. Your mother notices, and while you feared she might feel ambivalent about this project, she is instead surprisingly supportive, pointing you toward books who might help you expand on some informations yours provide. It's a bit frustrating to be only limited to theory - that lack of wyverns in Ylisse is really inconvenient! - but you soldiers on. You don't know when these informations might prove useful, but this is still a fascinating topic.

[X] Find a board-game partner

You also decide to look for a potential partner with the game Virion offered you. Your first attempts are met with mixed success. You first try your luck with Cynthia, but most of the rules seem to fly over her head, and she seems far more interested playing the horses. When she makes an honest attempt, it isn't long before you stand victorious- at which point she knocks out most of the figurines on the board, and proclaims herself Queen of Valha despite your protests that it is not how it works. Your second idea, Owain, isn't much better, him being far more interested in narrating the epic struggle between the armies of Nohr and Hoshido on the board, rather than playing the damn thing. It isn't long until you give up on him as a lost cause.

You're still thinking on others possible options (it would have been so much easier if Laurent was around!) when uncle Robin notices you with the board under your arm. He apparently recognize it instantly as being Virion's, saying he did play more than few games with him on the road. You decide this is your chance, and ask him to play one round with you. He hesitates a bit before accepting, to your delight. He then proceeds to soundly trounce you in the most embarrassing possible way. Once you get over your righteous indignation, you do the only logical thing : you challenge him again. And again. And again. He ends up pointing out that you're usually not supposed to win by making your opponent faint with exhaustion. At this point, you really don't care on how you would win, but still, you're forced to relent.

That is, until the next day, where you try your luck again. The meetings become a somewhat regular occurrence, and while you don't feel closer from scoring a win, Robin does end up giving you a few useful tips on how to better strategize your gameplay. Then he ruthlessly exploit your attempts at using those tips. Jerk. Still, between two moves, you can't help but remember your last conversation with Nah, about her dreams and Robin organizing their departure. You feel that maybe you could learn more by asking him, but is it entirely appropriate? Your father's tactician is a rather private character, and you're afraid questioning him could put him in a bad mood.

[] Ask him about Nah and Morgan's departure and the dreams
[] Remain silent on this issue

Skill : tactics learned

Finally, you decide to hit the library. You have many questions, and you hope books might help you answer them. The first topic is somewhat an idle fancy ; speaking with a few farmers brought to Naga's shrine left you curious about their daily lives, how they work... You are surprised to find out that there are actually many books on those very subjects ; they make for a dry read, but still, you think you have a better understanding on how the inhabitants of the Halidom remain fed.

Your second research topic concerns mercenaries. You only know one - more or less, you haven't talked much with Sir Gregor. Though he has a funny voice - but you were always intrigued about the concept of people fighting for coin. Aren't soldiers usually fighting for their country? As it turns out, it is a profession that seems far more common than you thought. For a long time, Ylisse only had a few within its border, relying on a standing professional armies, but in the wake of the Exalted Crusades (what were those? Something to look up later), the need for more swords, especially from worried merchants and frightful nobles, saw the Halidom a prime market for all kinds of sellswords. Even today, they tend to be seen as a necessary evil, tolerated as long as they don't cause trouble, and even pretty useful to keep brigands in check.

You finally decides to move toward more historical sources. It is however difficult to find decent sources on the most recent events - you suspect it might be a few years still before a comprehensive history of the latest conflict with Valm is written, for once. Still you do find a few chronicles speaking of the rise of Walhart the Conqueror and his quest to unite Valm - though his motives are mostly glossed over - and most stories tend to depict a rather brutal conquest. And from what you remember, he intended to do the same to Ylisse, until your dad stopped him. Their culture, however, is far more documented, and you are quickly lost under an avalanche of details - from the way they dress up to their places of worship - you hadn't even heard of Mila before! You feel like you'd need a lot more time to learn everything there is to it, so you decide to leave that aside for now and focus on your last point of interest.

The war with Plegia is more documented ; the archives speak of the Mad King Gangrel, how he ordered the murder of your aunt and plunged the two nations in a bloody conflict until he was finally killed. But by reading more on the topic, you stumble upon the far more controversial issue of the Exalted Crusades ordered by Exalt Valenor. Finding out that your grandfather apparently tried to destroy an entire country, and that Ylisse followed him in his quest, is a pretty scary thought. Up until now, you had been so sure Ylisse only fought to defend itself, but those authors seemed to indicate that had not always been so. But maybe they were wrong? Only one way to know : you decide to ask your dad.

Chrom is clearly reluctant, but he nonetheless takes your request seriously. Indeed,he says, his father was a frightening man, who did hurt a lot of people in his personal crusade against Plegia. He believed that if left alone, the Plegians would bring back Grima the Fell Dragon upon the world - that's a pretty ominous name, you think - and to avoid that, he was ready to spill the blood of every inhabitants of this country, almost destroying Ylisse in the process. When he died, Chrom admits he hadn't know how to feel ; it didn't feel right to mourn a man who had earned so much hatred, yet a part of him couldn't help it. Still, that left Emmeryn with an heavy burden, one that he now carry in her stead.

You can't help but ask the question who's burning your lips : was your grandfather able to use Falchion? No, says your father, he was not. You don't know how to feel about that ; on one hand, it is a relief that the Fang of Naga wouldn't serve such dark purpose. On the other hand, what would it tell about you if it turned out you couldn't use it either? Would that mean you were like your grandfather, destined to bring misery to the world? You always had wanted to ask your father to be tested to find out if you could wield Falchion, but now you're not so eager to find out.

Severa's request : part 2

By the end of summer, Severa finally comes back, having apparently made her choice for a future sword instructor. Reminding you of your offer, she asks to meet Sir Gregor. You admit, you're a bit surprised by her choice. Still, a promise is a promise.

[x] Ask him about Nah and Morgan's departure and the dreams

You hesitate, briefly taking your mind out of the game.

"Uncle Robin?"
"Hmm?"
"Can I ask you something?"

His face is blank as he stares at you, not letting anything transpire. It's as if he's analyzing you, trying to guess what you're about to say. He finally directs his attention on the board game once again, capturing one of your pieces.

"Go ahead."
"Why did Nah and Morgan had to leave?"

His mask is still on, his voice neutral. Too neutral, you think. And you don't like that he doesn't look at you when answering.

"I believed some change could do them some good. A city can be a stressful place to live in."

But that can't be the whole truth, can it? What about the...

"Is it about their nightmares?"
Kill her.
Robin finally looks up, looking curious.

"You know about those?"
"Yeah" you nod. "Nah talked to me about it a little, just before leaving. Something about a dragon?"
It would be easy. You have that knife in your sleeve. Stab her heart. She will never see it coming.
The tactician tenses, his posture subtly shifting, before he takes a deep breath, forcing himself to relax. You hesitate. Was you knowing that surprising?

"I see. Well, it's true that things haven't been easy for the both of them. I thought a new place to live might help."
"Nah also thought you had bad dreams too. Is that true?"
No-one would suspect you. You could spin any tale you'd want, Chrom would still trust you.
Robin lifts up an arm to massage his temples. Is he having a headache?

"Ah, so Nah noticed. I had hoped she wouldn't."

The way his gaze drifted while saying that makes you wonder if those words were intended for you, or if he simply was talking to himself. You had always heard rumours about your father's best friend, calling him a bit odd. You never thought much of it - he seemed normal enough to you, if a bit distant - but right now, you wonder. Still, he quickly seems to refocus.

"It is true that my position comes with a good amount of stress, and that can lead to some sleep difficulties. Still, there's no need to worry about me. As for my daughters..." He seems to hesitate. "Manakete are pretty rare, you know. And there are some cults who believe the blood of dragons carry magical properties. I feared that having them in plain sight in Ylisstol, when they are so young, could lead to problems. So I sent them in a safe place. Nowi is looking after them, and I still visit as often as I can, but I believe it is better this way."

You frown, trying to integrate that new information. Some people would kill Nah and Morgan for their blood? That's horrible!

"But then, what about the dreams?"
It would be a mercy to kill her now, you know. Unless you want to see what I'll do to her once I'm here?
Robin only shrugs, looking back at the game-board.

"Something to do with their manakete nature, I suppose. I wouldn't know. Oh, and I believe this is checkmate."

You frown, realizing he is right. Usually, that's the point where you ask for a rematch, but after what he just told you, you're no longer in the mood.

"Is there... is there anything I can do to help?"

Your godsfather seems a bit taken aback by your question, before his face starts to soften, allowing himself a small smile.

"You really care about Nah and Morgan, do you, Lucina?" You nod hesitantly. "Right now... right now you don't need to do anything. That is the job of us adults. But if one day I'm not around... Yes, I think I would like it to know you're looking after them."

You feel a pang of fear griping your heart. Why would he talk about not being around? You know, you just know he isn't telling you everything, but you don't think you have any way to get him to say more. So the only thing you do then is...

"All right. I will."
"So much like your father. Very well, I think this is enough for today. I'll see you soon, princess!"
Don't think you can protect her forever, Robin. She soon will be dead, like everyone else you know. And there is nothing you can do about it.

You learned more about what happened with Nah and Morgan (but what was true?)

[x] Introduce her. Gregor seems the type appreciate the direct approach. Just take Severa and ask him to teach her. If he won't do it for free, see if you can convince Father to pay him to do it.

You don't hesitate for long. If this is what Severa wants, then you don't have any right to question it. Asking you for your help was apparently pretty hard for her to do, stalling would be doing her a disservice at this point.

"Okay. Follow me then!"
"Wha-what? Right now?"

Severa's determination seems to falter, but you'd hear none of it.

"Of course! The sooner you start, the better you can become!"

You almost drag her through the palace halls, toward the place where you think you have the most chances to find Gregor at this hour. While he doesn't spend all - or even most - of his time in the palace itself, if memory served you right, this was about the end of Brady's violin repetition. And you knew that his father wouldn't miss them for anything in the world. You're quickly proven right when you see the burly mercenary leaving the auditorium, a content expression on his face.

"Sir Gregor!"

He turns around to greet you, his usual smile widening when he sees you two approaching.

"Oh! If it isn't young princess and her friend! If little girls wanting to hear Brady, Gregor is afraid it is over now. Maybe tomorrow, yes?"
"Actually, we wanted to speak to you."

The mercenary scratches his head, visibly confused.

"That so? Gregor not sure what he can do to help young ladies. Will do best anyway, of course!"

You wait to see if Severa wants to take the lead, but her closed expression and her eyes fixed on her shoes tell you that she isn't quite ready to make that jump. Well, you suppose, that's what she has you for.

"Sir Gregor, my friend Severa has shown an interest in learning how to use a sword. We would be extremely grateful if you were to take her as your pupil."
"Oh oh?"

Gregor rubs his shin, before kneeling in front of Severa, bringing his eyes to her level.

"Hmm. Little girl is Cordelia's daughter, yes?"

That remark is enough to snap out Severa of her timidity, and she immediately scowl at the mercenary, who fortunately doesn't seem to take offense - you're not sure he ever does.

"What does my mother have to do with anything?!"
"Nothing, nothing! Gregor just wanted to make sure. Lots of kids running around, hard to remember all. So, already learned a bit about swords, or is Gregor starting from scratch?"

She hesitates a bit before answering, with a bashful expression.

"Well... I asked my dad to show me a couple of things these last weeks. He told me it wasn't exactly his speciality, but he helped."

That comes as a surprise to you. You hadn't realized Severa already decided to take some steps toward her new goal. Clearly she was quite serious about all this.

"Ah, yes. Stahl not bad, but not a swordsman first, yes. Still, good Severa already know a few things, makes it easier for Gregor! Still curious, though, why ask Gregor? Lots of good fighters around, why looking for simple mercenary?"

You admit, you were a bit curious to know that as well. Severa hesitates a bit before answering.

"The others... the others know my mother too well. I don't want to be constantly compared to her, and I thought, you were the one who would care the less about that." She let out a deep breath, before grinning. "Also I saw you knock Lon'qu flat on his ass a few weeks ago."
"Ah! Young Lon'qu very good, but still a bit green! Not as vicious as Gregor, true! Okay, Gregor will see if can teach Severa, yes? Have to warn, though, swellest of swords, but hard teacher, oh oh!"
"I'd be disappointed if you weren't."

You finally part way with the older man, deciding to walk a bit with your friend, who now has a triumphant expression plastered on her face. You're glad to see her in such high spirits, rather than angry at the world. You can't claim to understand her all that well, but even you realize she went through rather hard times, having her smile is a welcome change of pace.

"Hey, Lucina? Thanks for the help."
"You're very welcome. I didn't do much, though."

You feel like the air between you two is clean once again. Until Severa's next mood swing, at least.

Summer eventually ends, finding you more restless than ever. You learned so much over this past year, yet you have the feeling you barely scratched the surface of what you can learn. (pick seven actions, not including the locked ones)

[X] Sword training (Ylissean royal style) (LOCKED)
[X] History and customs of Ylisse (LOCKED)
[X] Etiquette lessons (LOCKED)

[] Ask for new teachers
: you don't have anything against lady Armelle and sir Ogham, really, you don't. But those tutors, appointed in your parents absence, have trouble keeping your attention. Maybe you could ask if someone else would be available to teach you?

[] Ask Lon'qu for Chon'sin style lessons : without Say'ri around, the Feroxi champion is the only one you can turn to who's around on a semi-regular basis. Only problem is, you don't think he likes you all that much...

[] Training from Hell - Frederick edition : you must be utterly insane for even considering it. Your previous lessons with the knight have been hell, and now that they are over, you would come back for more? Yet the idea is firmly rooted in your mind...

[] Meditate and help at Naga's shrine : you found the practice useful after long days of training. You like the atmosphere of the place, and it is also a chance to occasionally help Libra, which is something you enjoy.

[] The Healer Princess : Libra have come to appreciate your help at the temple, and wonders if you would be willing to accompany him during his rounds in the city itself. He does warn you that this might be a rather exhausting task, but you are getting used to those, at this point.

[] So you want to learn about tactics? : your string of defeats against Robin was expected, but it doesn't mean it wasn't vexing. If you want to pay him back one of these days, you'll need to study his field... and who'd be better suited to teach you than the man himself?

[] Spend time in the library : your first foray in Ylisstol's library had been a fascinating experience, and you suspect there is still a lot more you can learn from its tomes. Who knows how much knowledge you can still dig up from it?
  • [] Any specific topic in mind? (no extra action)
[] Spend time in the stables : between your mother and Cherche's lessons, you have become more eager to learn about the best ways to care about animals these last weeks. And what better way to learn than to spend time with them? Well, it would be pretty strenuous, probably.

[] Call of the Sky : practice makes perfect. In one year, you became pretty familiar with flying mounts, now the only thing left to do is keep training in that discipline. Fortunately, you were born in the right family for that.

[] Spear lessons with Cordelia : your flying lessons went pretty well, but you admit, you'd be interested to learn more about the martial aspect of aerial combat, something Cynthia showed little taste for until now. But you get the feeling aunt Cordelia would be more than happy to help in this matter.

[] Explore Ylisstol : up until now, your childhood was spent mostly inside the palace, with the very occasional excursion outside. But you get the feeling that growing in such a sheltered environment might lead to problems down the line. Getting to know your own city seems like a good first step toward understanding Ylisseans.

[] Double down on your lessons : studying is one thing, but things worth doing are worth doing well.
  • [] Sword training (Ylissean royal style)
  • [] History and customs of Ylisse
  • [] Etiquette lessons
[] Spend time with the other children : you try to keep in touch with everyone still in Ylisstol, but your busy schedule often leaves you with less time than you'd like. Still, your friends are worth the effort, you think. Also, since Miriel came back from her trip, Laurent is once more in Ylisstol. (note : you can pick two friends for one action. Specify if you want to do something in particular)
  • [] Owain
  • [] Severa
  • [] Kjelle
  • [] Brady
  • [] Yarne
  • [] Noire
  • [] Laurent
  • [] Cynthia

[] Write-in : thinking hard about it, maybe there's something else you could do?

[] Special - slack off : some of these lessons are... hard to bear. Surely no-one would mind if you were to take it easy on some of them? Or even miss them? (doesn't take a choice, but instead gives one extra choice or each lesson you pick with this option.)

  • [] Check on Severa's progress : you're pretty curious to know how Severa is doing with Gregor. Unfortunately, her lessons are scheduled at the same time of some of your own studies, meaning that to satiate your curiosity, you'd have to miss a class...

I have no idea how long I'll manage to maintain that writing pace. I expected maybe two updates a week when I started...

Your sword lessons remain the highlight of most of your days. You growing up, slow as it might be, and Frederick's intensive training means that your body is able to handle the physical demands of the royal style better than before. As such, you feel yourself improving by day under the approving gaze of your father.

You wish you'd do as well in your other lessons, but so far, they have become a form of routine. You do what is expected of you, but feel no need to put the same extra effort that you make in your other lessons.

[X] Training from Hell - Frederick edition

After a long hesitation, you finally steel yourself. While Frederick's lessons are anything but pleasant, you feel like stopping them now would be akin to giving up. And you really, really don't like that. So when you go ask Frederick to resume your training sessions, you're actually pleased by his nod of approval. Still, you suspect that it doesn't mean he's going to go easy on you. That, or his "easy" standards are rather unique. You'd be right. This goes about as well as expected ; that is to say, this is plain atrocious. His "light jogs" leave you gaping for air. His "few push ups" give you the feeling that your arms are about to fall off. And at this point, he usually decides that this is enough for a warm-up, and that it is time to begin the training proper. More often than not, it is only pure willpower that keeps you going.

Things take a turn for the better when a new person shows up to watch those lessons. You don't know if she's her because Frederick asked for her, of if your parents put her up to it out of concern, but when aunt Lissa greets you alongside your instructor, you are pretty surprised. Still, you become quickly grateful for her presence ; she knows the best ways for you to recuperate between two exercises, always have some healing salves ready when you take an unfortunate tumble, and doesn't hesitate to reign in the knight when she feels he's going overboard. She also displays a good deal of knowledge on his personal weak points, and does not hesitate to tease him mercilessly when she thinks it is needed. You have to admit, seeing the stern guardian so easily flustered by the princess' behaviour is a sight to behold, and you take a few notes about which button to press with him... just in case.

[X] So you want to learn about tactics?

When you ask your uncle Robin to teach you about strategy and tactics, he seems a bit surprised, but say he'll think about it. The very next day, a messenger announces you that Ylisse's Grandmaster is waiting for your presence in the study room. Indeed, you find your godsfather with a pile of books and maps, looking thoughtful, but determined. Your lessons start immediately, beginning with studies of the two wars he personally fought in. There is... a lot of informations to learn ; apparently, waging war involves a lot more than swinging swords and throwing yourself at the enemy.
Trying to forge another weapon against me, Robin? First Morgan, now this girl? You must be truly desperate.
You prove to be a diligent student, however. It helps that the examples he chose are the ones you wanted to know more about for a long time, and knowing most of the actors makes it easy to pay attention. Through dispassionate and clinical texts, you get to learn about the actions of your father, of the Mad King or of the Conqueror. While the intricacies of Robin's tactics are still way over your head, you think you begin to have a clearer picture of what warfare looks like.

During one of those study session, you end starring at several pages of undecipherable gibberish – at least, to your eyes. When you ask Robin about that, he realizes his mistake ; apparently, he let one of his magic tomes slip through the manuals he intended for you. You give the book a second glance ; this is actually the first time you have the chance to see one from up close. Still, you quickly refocus on your lessons.

[X] Ask Lon'qu for Chon'sin style lessons

While you've been putting it off those last months, you had always intended to seek out Lon'qu. The style that Say'ri used left you with a strong impression, and you are decided to eventually learn it. Still, your first contact with the swordmaster goes poorly. You barely have time to make your demand that he utters a definitive"no" before storming off. That... was not the answer you expected.

Still, you're nothing if not stubborn. For a week, you keep ambushing him with requests, each being met with the same refusal. Damn, he's stubborn too. At this point, you decide to take a page of Robin's book ; if a first approach proves to be inefficient, you need to switch tactics. The next time the Feroxi swordmaster enters the courtyard to practice his forms, he finds you waiting for him. You actually do not talk, remaining at a respectful distance. With a grunt, he decides to not pay you any attention, and starts going through his stances. You simply watch.

He finds you there too the next day, and the day after that. After a week of observation, you decide to make it to the next step, and start mimicking his form. It's far from ideal ; you don't know what you are doing most of the time, simply having the basic teachings of Say'ri as a reference. Yet, you figure that if you keep watching, you might figure it out eventually. Day after day, you keep observing and trying to replicate his moves, with limited success.

Then one day he actually corrects you. It's just a simple instruction about straightening your arm, barked in a gruff tone, but you take it as a personal victory as you comply. With time, those advices become more frequent, and while he still maintains some distance toward you, you finally begin to actually learn instead of improvising.

Skill : Chon'sin style raised to E+
Lon'qu is taking a more active role in your teaching
Option unlocked : The Way of the Sword

[X] Call of the Sky

Your previous flying lessons have awakened a want. You feel more and more at ease in the sky, something you really didn't expect at first. Perhaps you're more your mother's daughter than you thought. Nonetheless, you take turn with Cynthia flying Titania, trying to reproduce the aerial manoeuvers your mother shows you, enjoying the sensation of freedom you get when in the air.

When not flying, the three of you relax by taking care of the palace's pegasi. Your mother uses that time to tell you tales of her experiences with the Shepherds, be it in Regna Ferox, Plegia or Valm. You wonder if you'll have the chance to see those countries one day too – hopefully not in the middle of a war. For now, though, you're content enough with these moments surrounded by your family.

Characteristic : dexterity raised to C
Skill : riding (pegasi) raised to D+
Skill : aerial combat raised to E+
Skill : animal care (pegasi) raised to D
Option unlock : train with pegasus knights novices

Special event : an unexpected gift

Your mother comes to find you one morning, asking you to follow her, a knowing smile on her face. Mildly surprised, you walk with her to the stables, not quite knowing what to expect ; she isn't usually so mysterious, though you learned she do love dramatic reveals – probably something she picked up while reading novels. As she let you go past her, you suddenly see what exactly is the surprise : in one of the box stand a young, but fierce-looking blue wyvern.

As you ask your mother for explanations, she tells you she kept in touch with Cherche by exchanging letters, and pointed out the zealous attention you spent on the book the wyvern-knight left you, as well as your new-found interest in flying lessons. Virion's retainer was able to find a wyvern young enough to be trained, though most of that will be your responsibility, should you be willing. You first job, as her new partner, would be to find her a name...

[X] Cu

"Cu", you decide pretty much instantly. A short name, easy to remember. The newly baptized wyvern emits a low growl that you'd like to think is an approbation. The beast seems nervous, which is understandable given the circumstances, but is watching you intently, as if measuring you up. Remembering Miverna and her uncanny intelligence, you nod to her. Right now, you two are mostly strangers to each other. It will take time to gain her trust, but you know having such a companion would be definitely worth it. You're already trying to recall what you read in your book, what you did to take care of the pegasi here and which would still be applicable...

Right now, though? You have a thank you letter to write to a knight of Rosanne.

Wyvern named Cu acquired

[X] Meditate and help at Naga's shrine

During the last year, the shrine almost became a second home. You feel at peace here, enjoying Libra's conversation or simply being alone with your own thoughts. Even the work asked of you is welcome in your opinion ; training can be an enjoyable activity, but here, you feel useful, not just preparing for the future. And you think you're not the only one feeling that way, if Brady's more and more frequent visits are any indication. The two of you often work side by side, providing aid to those who came on these holy grounds in need of treatment. During your common breaks, You try to learn a bit more about his current life - the shrine is really the only place you see him these days - but he doesn't seem to have much to say - or maybe he's just unwilling? All he tells you is that his father proposed to train him a bit - apparently, having Severa as a pupil now, he might have felt the need to extend the same help to his son - but that Brady quickly gave up. Weapons are not his thing, he says.

During quieter times, you keep meditating in the inner sanctum, and for the first time, you're wondering if you're not feeling another presence. Ironically, despite being in a place dedicated to Naga, you never thought too much about her. Her existence never had been in doubt - you read enough to know the role she played in Ylisse history - but you probably thought yourself beneath her notice. Yet as you feel the peaceful feeling that surrounds you, you can't help but think it might not only come from your mind. Is Naga watching you? Is it a good or a bad thing? Either way, the thought is humbling. when you talk to Libra about this sensation, he admits anything is possible. Naga always had been closer from her worshippers than most deities, he says, and she might extend some extra attention to one from the Exalted line. He recommands you to net overly anxious about it ; whether it is Naga or a figment of your imagination, it doesn't have to change the way you live.
Prepare your heart, child. Dark times are coming.
At the end of winter, you have the unpleasant surprise of seeing a pale Noire once more, feeling apparently very weak once again. This time, you refuse to leave your friend alone, and Libra accepts your help in treating her. As you keep her company, providing moral comfort at the very least, you can't help but notice that most of the symptoms plaguing Noire are unknown to you. When asked, Libra eventually admits this is the work of dark magic. When you ask who would do such a thing to your friend, he doesn't answer, simply stating that he'll do his best to make sure that this situation never happens again. Even Noire tries to reassure you, which actually worry you even more.

[X] The Healer Princess

You know that Libra's duties aren't only to officiate in the shrine, and that he spends a lot of time touring the city to heal who can't or won't come directly to him. Now that you're feeling more confident in your abilities to help, you offer him your assistance, which he gracefully accepts (though getting your parents approval a bit more time - and you notice that Libra is now taking an axe you were pretty sure he didn't carry with him before). The experience is... enlightening. Even in a nation as prosperous as Ylisse, poverty still exists, and in the aftermath of two wars, invalids are numerous. Libra warned you it would be a tiring task, and he didn't lie ; you're constantly moving from one side of the city to the other, seeing family after family.

Things get a bit awkward when some people recognize you as the Exalt's daughter. While the reactions are overwhelmingly positive, it doesn't feel right to you that some might be this grateful for your presence, when Libra is the one doing most of the work - though to be fair, he does get his fair share of thanks. In fact, many in Ylisstol seem to know him by name, and he clearly has a reputation among the people. Yours, however, seems to be growing. While Emmeryn did repair most of the damage to the Exalted line's image caused by your grandfather, and your father is hailed as a hero for saving the country from foreign occupation twice, the presence of the infant princess helping to heal those in need is noticed. Some are sceptical, seeing here simple propaganda, but your name is the talk of the day in many places.

[X] Explore Ylisstol

Those recent experiences made you realize one thing : you really didn't know your own city, let alone your own country. Well, no more. You decide to ask for your parents the right to visit the city. Their first reaction is to assign you an official escort, but uncle Robin points out it would rather defeat the purpose of your exploration if you can only see Ylisstol from behind a wall of knights. Chrom is visibly pretty unhappy about the whole thing, but seems sympathetic to your request, and is willing to hear his tactician out. Which is why you find yourself at dusk, dressed in an anonymous cloak and with an eyepatch over your left eye, escorted by a rather unfamiliar individual, but that Robin deemed the best possible choice - and that your father accepted, but only after threatening him with a Falchion-induced death if anything happened to you - isn't that an abuse of the Fang of Naga? - that is to say sir Gaius.

"Well, I got to say, Little Blue. That's a strange idea Bubbles got here. Yours too, for that matter. I could have sworn I already had a conversation with your dad about a similar thing. Oh well."

You're not quite sure why he calls you 'Little Blue' - just because your hair are blue, your eyes are blue, and you usually wear blue doesn't mean it's an opportune nickname!- and you have no idea who 'Bubbles' is, but you feel obligated to respond.

"I'm sorry for inconvenience, sir Gaius, and I'm grateful for your help. This... this something I feel I need to do."

The thief only shrugs, waving away your apology.

"Don't worry your pretty head about it. Just... don't get into troubles when I have my back turned, okay? I like keeping my head on my shoulders, thanks. Speaking of which, I certainly hope you won't have to use it, but, just in case..."

He slips you a small dagger. This is no sword, and you only have the faintest clue on how to use it, but you suppose it is better than nothing. Even if you have trouble imagining someone attacking you in the streets. The two of you step out in Ylisstol streets, illuminated by the setting sun. Gaius is apparently considering his options.

"Let's see, I know a few good taverns with... wait, no, can't bring you there. Maybe the Song of Altea. A bit classier than what I'm used to, but hey, it will do. We could also go the market place, always a busy place. I'd tell you to watch your purse, but you don't have any - and it would be pretty shameful if that sort of things happened under my watch. Talk about my professional reputation. Or we could always wander at random, see what we find. Sometimes you get lucky. Anything that appeals to you, Little Blue?"

Chapter 1-11: Robbery in progress?
[X] You're getting a strange feeling from the outskirts of Ylisstol... Investigate

As you take the time to ponder on Gaius' options, your eye gets drawn in a specific direction. Your time at Naga's shrine made you more sensible to strange phenomenons, and while this isn't quite the same feeling, you still feels something there is... odd. You'd have trouble explaining it with words, but the need to check this... anomaly is almost overwhelming. As you point out a general direction, Gaius seems surprised.

"Eh, that way? Not much in that direction, from what I know. But sure, why not."

The two of you start to make your way through the streets of Ylisstol, seemingly at random. Yet you still get this... strange feeling that refuses to go away. Behind your eyepatch, you can feel your Mark throbbing - it's not quite painful, but now that you're focusing on the feeling, the sensation is hard to ignore. Behind you, Gaius seems to be a bit confused.

"Erm, Little Blue, do you have any idea of where you're going?"

Truthfully, no, not really. You don't even know what you're looking for exactly. You can only hope you'll recognize it when you'll see it. After a fifteen-minute walk, you find yourself reaching the outskirts of the town, a still perplex Gaius on your heels - he seems to have given up on getting an explanation, thugh, simply going along with your hunch. You finally stop in front of a shoddy wooden house - really, "house" was a kind word to describe the ruined residence in front of you. Yet you get the impression the source of your unease might find its source here.

As you approach, your hear voices coming from inside. The first seems to belong to an elderly, and is laced with indignation.

"... want? You ruffians already took everything! I suspect you don't even know the value of what you stole, do you? Pah!"

The answer comes in the form of a rather loud, and if you were to judge, obnoxious tone.

"Well, all I know is that we're getting paid for those things, and that we apparently missed one. Now, do you really want to do it the hard way, old man?"

You can now see the two speakers. One is a burly man with a shaved head, no more than forty years old, carrying a mean curved sword ; standing in front of him is a bald old man with a white beard, and seemingly more annoyed than scared at his situation. Gaius is by your side, listening intently, his hand already on his short sword. You can see the hesitation in his eyes, wanting nothing more than to jump in, but reluctant to leave you without protection. You are yourself hesitant over what to do now...

Chapter 1-12: On razor's edge
[x] Tell Gaius to intervene on the old man's behalf

You exchange a look with your unofficial bodyguard. While you can understand his reluctance to leave you alone, you could never forgive yourself if keeping you safe meant someone else got injured. In light of that, it isn't a difficult decision, as far as you're concerned ; as you mouth off to him "go help him", you can see Gaius scowl. Still, he complies, drawing his blade in complete silence, before jumping through the broken window. You can't help but be impressed by the fact that he somehow managed to land without making a sound, the bandit entirely unaware of his presence. Only a few more steps, and he would...

"Oooh! Are you a brave hero here to rescue an old man from molestation?"

... have his presence revealed by the would-be victim. Gaius only has time to let out a swear before dodging a sword swing from the now very aware bandit. The two men ends up staring at each other, naked blades at the ready, and you can't help but feel a knot in the pit of your stomach. This is the first time you are watching a real fight, and sir Gaius' opponent is considerably larger, more muscular and with a longer reach... The old man's cheerings are not reassuring you one bit either.

"Yes! Teach that insolent rapscallion a lesson he'll remember!"

If you haven't talked before, it would already be over! you want to scream. Given Gaius frown, you think he must have something similar in mind. The other man, however, seems mostly angry at the interruption.

"Huh? What are you doing here? Get lost!"

His injunction is carried with another sword swing, and just like that, the battle begins in earnest.

Very quickly, you feel your worries diminishing. The thuggish swordsman is indeed quite strong, but nothing quite like your father or lady Say'ri. And on his end, sir Gaius is fast. You don't recognize his sword style, but his blade is almost a blur, constantly keeping his opponent off-balance, taking advantage of his wild swings to exploit openings in his guard. After a few passes, the bandit sports two slash wounds, one across his torso and the other on his right arm, forcing him to rely more on his wrong hand. Gaius, on the other hand, remains untouched, allowing himself to take a brief pause in his duel.

"I must say, I did a lot of things I'm not proud of in my life, but robbing an old man blind? That's messed up. Why don't you drop that sword and leave before I'm forced to hurt you more?"

The suggestion only manage to make the other man angry.

"Shut your trap! Why are you even here, anyway?"

The shepherd only offers a shrug.

"Not entirely sure, to tell the truth. Oh well, doesn't matter. Hmmm... Wait. Don't I know you? I think I can recognize your face..."

The man seems to ready a response, before stopping. He is now starring past Gaius... at you? No, that's not it... behind you! You don't have time to react until a strong hand grabs your shoulders, while another produces a sharp knife.

"Well, Victor, I told you it was a good idea to keep watch. This mean man is giving you trouble, darling?"

You freeze. Stupid, stupid, stupid! You were so fixated on what was going inside the house you didn't take the time to watch for a possible accomplice outside! Actually, now that you look at the man taking you hostage, not just an accomplice, if his strong resemblance with the man inside is anything to go buy. Same muscular build, same tanned skin, same shaved head with only a few patches of hair remaining... Siblings? The dagger near your stomach reminds you that this may not be the best time to think about that. On his hand, saying Gaius is not happy with that new development is an understatement : the man is livid.

"Oy, mister! If you don't leave my baby brother alone, I'm going to stab girly here. You wouldn't want that, do you?"

This is bad. You do your best to push back that pang of terror you feel rising inside you. For all your training, this is the first time you're actually threatened, and you don't know how to react. There must be something you can do, surely?

[] Reach for your dagger : your kidnapper is almost entirely focused on Gaius, and not watching your hands very closely. It is quite possible you'd manage to reach the dagger Gaius gave you and free yourself.
[] Talk this out : physical confrontation is too big a risk right now, but surely those men can listen to reason? Or, if not, maybe you could trick them?
- [] What would you say?
[] Let Gaius handle this : he's the adult, he must know what to do in those situations! ... right?

Chapter 1-13: First blood
[X] Reach for your dagger
My, we are feeling bold today...

Note : while it isn't the winning vote, Space-Multiply write-in is close enough for me to include part of it in the coming scene. Obviously, I'll only do that if the result is a net positive for the players.

You take a deep breath to calm yourself. Fear cuts deeper than swords, your father once told you. The man holding you hostage is still fixated on Gaius, confident in the fact you will be a docile prisoner. And you still have the weapon the thief gave you under your cloak. You can do this. All your muscles tense in anticipation, while you're trying to wait for the most opportune moment. No, wait, this won't do. Even without paying attention, his grip on you is too strong. Simply waiting for a chance might not be enough... what you need to do is create an opportunity.

"Hum... mister bandit, sir?"
"I'm busy, brat."
"Sorry, sir, it's just... I couldn't help but notice, you have... a wonderful... voice?"
"Huh?"

Charisma D (base D+, no bluff skill) vs Intelligence E+. Cuteness is the deadliest weapon.

If you could have, you would have slapped yourself. Of all the things to say... Yet no choice but to soldier on now.

"Yes! I mean, I'm sure you could charm even nobility with such a singing tone! Not that I know anything about nobility's taste, of course."

What are you saying?! Stop it, stop it! At this rate, this is going to... work? You can feel the grip slacken a bit, as the man direct a beaming smile to his accomplice.

"Hear that, Victor? Always told you that..."

Now.

Dexterity C vs Dexterity D (base C, surprised). A flawless escape!

Your whole body twist, taking him by surprise. His weakened grab is no longer enough to hold you, and in an instant, you are free. Almost instinctively, his armed hand swing towards you, with the intent of sticking his dagger between your ribs, but you're ready for that. Putting your two arms in direct opposition to his own, you do your best to counter his hastily given blow.

Strength D+ vs Strength C- (base B-, surprised). A close call.

Despite your advantageous position, the strength of the blow sends you tumbling on the ground. Still, you avoided the blade, which was your main objective all along. Before the bandit can press the attack, your hand flies toward the dagger at your belt, drawing it before he has time to reacts. From your position, you can only aim at his feet. It'll do. Almost blindly, you take a swing toward his left tendon. If you can injure him here, then escaping should be...

Swords E+ (base D+, unfamiliar weapon) vs Unarmed Combat C-. This isn't good...

It is, by all account, a rather weak attempt ; you are unfamiliar with this type of weapon, you strike at an awkward angle, and your strength is too low to inflict a deep wound. The blade only slashes across his ankle, causing him a painful but superficial wound, not nearly enough to really handicap him. He roars in anger, before lashing out with his good leg, hitting you directly in the gut. The impact sends you rolling on the floor, gasping for air. You barely have time to get back to a crouching position, doing your best to ignore the pain in your ribs when your opponent comes right back at you, weapon raised.

"Why, you little..."

He doesn't have any time to say more before Gaius rams into him, sending both of them to the ground. The two of them briefly struggle before your kidnapper goes limp. The reason quickly becomes apparent when you see Gaius sword sticking through his neck. The sight of the blood pouring through the wound is nearly enough to make you lose your dinner.

"No, Vincent! You bastard, you'll pay for that!"

Despite his fighting words, Victor decides the time is right for an hasty retreat, running through the door before your guardian can get back on his feet. Gaius hesitates a bit, considering giving pursuit, before thinking better of it. His gaze fall on you, and you can tell he is not happy.

"Little Blue, what the hell?! What in Naga's name possessed you to do something so... so...!"
"I couldn't do nothing!" you instantly retort. "If I hadn't freed myself, we might have all been killed!"

Your heated response is almost instinctual. In a way, the anger - directed at whom, you're not sure - is a better feeling than the fear you know isn't far from your heart. You almost got killed. You almost got Gaius killed. If you think about it too long, you'll...

"I would have thought of something! Don't just... you're a kid! You shouldn't..."

The words have trouble coming out. The thief certainly seems angry, but his eyes... It is at that moment that you realize he is probably feeling as afraid as you are. That revelation is enough for the dam to break.

"I... I am sorry, uncle Gaius. I..."

This time, the tears start to come, as your whole body begins to shake. The events of this evening... this is too much. As you sniffle, you can feel two arms embracing you, as the thief kneels next to you.

"Hey, it's okay, Little Blue. Just... don't scare me like that, okay?"

You can only nod, not trusting your voice to provide an intelligible response. For a moment, you stay there, letting your adoptive "uncle" - your father insistence that every Shepherd is family really means you have a lot of those, doesn't it? - calm you down. That moment of tranquillity is eventually broken by a heavy cough. Oh yes, you almost forgot the one you were so intent on rescuing...

"Ahem. Splendid, splendid, brave heroes! Clearly those ruffians were no match for your might and..."

Standing back up, Gaius send a glare toward the old man.

" And it would have been a lot easier if you didn't warn him! Who even does that?"
"Ah. Erm. Yes, I suppose I got... carried away?" At least, he's sounding properly contrite now... though not for long. "Anyway! Let me thank you for your timely rescue! Who knows what cruel fate would have befallen me if not for your fortuitous intervention?"
"If you want to thank someone, thank the girl" he answers, pointing at you. "Don't know how she did it, but she led me straight to this place."
"Ohoh, indeed?"

Suddenly finding yourself at the center of the attention, under a surprisingly focused gaze, you shift uncomfortably.
