Heart of Steel Chapter 1: Across Dimensions, a Halo + Kantai Collection Crossover fanfic | FanFiction

A reclaimer more powerful than all the rest.

With the shape of a human, but with a heart of steel.

Monitor 797 Lambent Light pondered these thoughts as he slowly floated through the decrepit and decaying forerunner installation known simply as "the gate".

The cool blue aura that the ancient forerunner ancilla usually emanated flashed an aggressive red as hundreds of thousands of years of inactivity weighed down on the AI's central processing core.

The rampancy was beginning, and 797 knew it.

However, 797 still had a job to do. Without hesitation, Lambent Light purged the corrupt portions of its memory banks labeled "secondary moral guidelines" in order to ensure that its prime directives remained untouched by the decay.

Lambent Light's movement became erratic, and it staggered as its processing core struggled to compensate for what had been deleted with lines of "filler code".

That move couldn't be used many more times. Each time it was done, 797's information matrix decreased in size as code was brutally stripped from it to fill the void of corrupted material. If this procedure was done enough times, 797 would enter the AI equivalent of a vegetative state.

The aging monitor knew that it was running out of time.

797 analyzed the possible candidates. Ideally, it would have transported all of them, but the repair sentinels had stopped functioning millennia ago, and the installation itself had been corroded by the passage of time. The installation could be used once, and only once. Thus, a choice had to be made between the four strongest candidates.

Special Class destroyer, Fubuki.

797 had considered this one, as she had the spirit that was needed for the job ahead. However, though she was fast, she lacked raw power, something that was to be needed in troves for her mission.

Aircraft Carrier Akagi.

At first glance, Akagi looked to be the perfect candidate. Proud, confident, and strong. But again, 797 found her unsuitable. She was too fragile, and a plasma weapon hitting her flight deck would spell her doom as she would be unable to launch planes and retaliate.

Fast Battleship Kongou

She was Unpredictable. That would be a problem for 797 and his plans. Therefore, she was Unsuitable.

Fast Battleship Yamato

Powerful and rugged, Yamato was the pride of fleet. Though she was soft spoken, her combat abilities caused the others to look up to her. She was a natural leader.

She was the perfect candidate.

Had 797's emotional emulator still been functioning, it would have felt a pang of sadness for what it was about to do. For his own use, the monitor was about to rip a being away from her friends and loved ones whose survival depended on her power. However, the monitor recognized that this move was necessary, and thus proceeded with the activation sequence.

Once the final power cores were in place, a harmonic buzzing filled the installation. 797 knew that the installation wouldn't survive a firing, but his prime directives placed completion of his mission higher than all other priorities, self preservation included.

797 went through with final activation procedures, and for an instant, a star in the sky glowed brighter than all the others before being consumed by darkness.

Heart of Steel Chapter 2: First Contact, a Halo + Kantai Collection Crossover fanfic | FanFiction
Hoya POV:

Why let the eggheads have all the fun, thought Hoya as he pressed his gauntlet clad palm firmly on the glowing panel.

Normally, even Hoya wouldn't act so rashly, but he was practically dying of boredom. He had been sent along with Palmer on orders of Capt. Lasky to do a cleanup op on Requiem's surface. Basically, they were to patrol some old forerunner structures and make sure that a grunt strapped full of high explosives wasn't waiting in a corner for a group of USNC scientists to walk by.

Hoya hated patrol duty. His trigger finger itched so much that if the safety of his SAW hadn't been firmly in place, he would have already emptied a mag into the large rock formations looming overhead. He needed to shoot something, and he needed to shoot something this instant. Hoya took this moment to duly recognized that he probably had a condition.

The panel responded to his touch, and a rock covered door slowly opened at the bottom of the cliff face, next to the panel. Hoya peered inside, and saw that the entryway was connected to a long, dark, narrow corridor that stretched on for quite a while. Hoya saw something flash on his motion detector, then gasped as he heard movement.

Something was in there.

It was too dark to see clearly, but Hoya thought he saw the outline of a large gun barrel that was slowly rotating towards him. Then, two crimson eyes suddenly appeared, reflecting what little light there was in the tunnel right at Hoya's visor. That was all the provocation that Hoya needed to start shooting.

Hoya felt the hefty recoil of his M739 LMG as it sprayed whatever was in the corridor with a fusillade of automatic firepower. Tracer fire illuminated the dark corridor with blinding flashes of light as the rounds from the machine gun found their mark.

Yamato POV:

Seeing a flash of light was the last thing Yamato remembered.

What happened? Looking around her, Yamato noted that she was inside of some kind of structure that connected to the outside via a dark corridor. At the end of the corridor was a roughly humanoid shape outlined by the bright light coming from the outside.

Where was she? Yamato's thoughts were interrupted by a loud noise and a flash of light. She then realized that she was being shot. Dozens of bullets hit her all over, but Yamato felt nothing but light flicks where each one hit her. Yamato growled with annoyance. In a show of power she walked straight through the gunfire, not even bothering to evade it, towards whatever was shooting her. It was going to pay.

Hoya POV:

While firing, Hoya checked his motion detector again and that's when he realized he was in deep trouble. His target was actually moving towards him. It was almost as if his rifle fire was having no effect at all!

Confused, Hoya payed closer attention to what was happening down range. To his utter surprise, Hoya saw that the rounds from his SAW were ricocheting off the target and bouncing around the inside of the corridor, causing a noise like metal rain.

Hoya watched his ammo counter tick down.

30... 20... 10... *click*

There it was, the dead man's click. He was out of ammo and the target was still coming towards him, unhindered. Hoya quickly pulled two M9 fragmentation grenades from his belt, pulled their pins, and threw them into the corridor. Two explosions echoed across the ravine, but the target was still approaching him.

At this point Hoya realized that he was going to need some help. He didn't like calling for help, but even Hoya realized that he was outmatched against this unknown foe.

"This is Spartan Hoya, requesting immediate assistance. I'm engaged with an unknown hostile foot-mobile, presumed forerunner in origin. Conventional weapons have had no effect thus far, proceeding to CQC. I repeat, requesting immediate assistance"

Palmer should be here soon, thought Hoya. With that taken care of and no ammunition left, Hoya decided to pull out his knife and charge into the corridor at the target, the thought of retreat never having even crossed his mind.

Hoya aimed a stab at his target, and was surprised to see that the titanium-carbide combat knife that had impaled the skull of many a Zealot simply bounced off. In the darkness, Hoya aimed a blind punch at the target, and was pleasantly surprised to feel it connect. A moment later, he severely regretted his decision as he felt his wrist bone crack and his fingers dislocate. It felt like he had just tried to slug the front of a Scorpion tank! Had he missed and punched the wall?

Hoya flailed in the darkness holding his injured hand. Suddenly a jackhammer blow nailed him in the side of the helmet. With one hit his energy shields had been brought down, the side of his helmet had been crushed, and his jaw had been shattered. Hoya felt his foot break as something incredibly heavy crushed his armored boot. Hoya stumbled, but was given no respite as an incredible impact hit him in the chest, flattening his armor and sending him flying out of the corridor and onto the rocky ground outside.

Lying on his back in a pool of his own blood, Hoya tilted his head up to look back towards the corridor's entrance, where his target stepped out of the darkness and into the light. Hoya took his first look at the mysterious enemy, and was shocked to see what appeared to be a young civilian woman with large cannons strapped to her sides.

Hoya prayed that this was all just a horrible, horrible nightmare, or some drug induced psychiatric hallucination prescribed by a shrink to correct his trigger-happy ways.

As the woman slowly stepped closer to him, Hoya pulled out his pistol in an act of defiance and prepared to meet his maker.

"Fast Battleship Yamato" is basically an oxymoron, since fast battle ships need to make in general, at least 30 knots to be fast.

Also, that SAW LMG is a heavy weapon designed to punch through covenant shields and armor, and is capable of taking down a Spartan in just a few seconds of fire. Said Spartan is in armor "More protective than that of a UNSC frigate." With only a measly few feet of primitive steel as armor, Yamato is dead, no ifs ands or buts.

Lets not forget to, Titanium Carbide knives in halo cut through even Spartan ceramic armor (the strongest material humanity can make) with little difficulty.

Lastly, Spartans can lift a up to a ton without assistance, and in their armor that number goes up to a dozen tons. When a Spartan punches a wall or Scorpion, Spartan wins, I expect it will be no different if that wall is only a couple feet of outdated steel at most.

Really, I like what you have going and where you can go with this, but don't undermine the agency and badassery of Spartans because of 'LoL, Magic.' Have this introduction of Yamato into the Halo verse cause kanmusu and abyssals start showing up from destroyed starships, or something equally awsome like that. Don't make this a fic where Protagonist from magical setting X gets transported to SciFi setting Y and undermine the agency and capability of setting Y's characters, because the author likes setting X better.

I do agree with your points about Yamato not being a fast battleship. Regardless of speed, she wasn't classified as one historically, so she shouldn't be classified as one now.

I am however, I am a little confused about how MJOLNIR is more protective than a UNSC frigate. I remember something about it costing as much as a frigate, but not being more durable. I'm a little out of touch with the Halo lore, not having read the escalation comics and other EU stuff, but I don't recall this ever being the case.

Also, the SAW fires a 7.62x51 mm AP round. This is actually very similar in use to mid-high caliber contemporary small arms in use since the 1950s. There isn't any evidence to suggest that the 7.62 rounds fired from the Halo SAW are significantly more powerful than those fired from say an AK variant, and I will treat them as such. Also, while Yamato's armor may just be plain old steel, there is a lot of it. Definitely more than can be punched through by mere small arms anyway.

According to Halo Nation, The knives are coated in titanium for rust resistance, but the blade itself is composed of high-carbon steel, which is similar to what Yamato's armor is made out of. Hitting Yamato with a combat knife is like taking a thin wood sword and trying to chop down a tree with it. It's not going to work.

Also, Spartans are 2-3 tonners at most. This has been debated to death on factpile, as well as here.

What I'm trying to do here is explore the implications of the impact that a battleship compressed down to the size of a human would have on the Halo universe. Please do note that I'm trying my best to remove any magical elements that Kancolle brings with it for this fic. Yeah she wiped the floor with Hoya and Palmer, but that's because they both had no idea what they were dealing with and severely underestimated her. Also, they're Spartan IVs, who are known for their cockyness and rashness. Someone like the Master Chief (who will be important in this story) could probably fight Yamato on equal terms given the right weaponry. I'm a huge fan of both Halo and Kancolle, and I am not intentionally trying to overpower one faction over the other. If anything, the Halo universe completely stomps over the Kancolle one with their Super-MACs, Halo Arrays, and NOVA bombs. In short, I'm just trying to realistically portray what would actually happen given the scenario that I have set up.

Anyways, I don't want to argue over who *should* have won in a fight, or if attack X could hurt character Y. That's not what this thread is for. I welcome all feedback, but if you want to debate whether or not Spartan IVs could defeat shipgirls in combat, there are other places for that.

Halo, like a number of other franchises, isn't exactly known for consistancy. I think…

I was basing how protective Mjolnir is compared to a UNSC starship's armor, by the fact that a Spartan in mjolnir A. More advanced protection, and B. Better protection to size ratio, since both have a couple inches of advanced ceramic. The fact that if you drop a Spartan from orbit alongside any UNSC ship, the Spartan will be picking up the pieces, with MAYBE a small limp. Thus, a Spartan can survive bigger and more hits relative to his size, than a UNSC frigate.

You're probably right about only being 2-3 tonners, but Spartans can bend high quality, five inch thick steel as if they were peeling an orange, unarmored. (Fall of reach.) Armored, their strength is multiplied to be 4-5 times stronger, so it should be somewhat easy for an armored Spartan to dent a 15 inch steel wall.

For the knife and SAW your probably right, but in a fist fight a Spartan should at least have a chance. But that's the problem, when I read the current snips, I saw some fun scenes exploring those implications, but they were completely overshadowed by the fact that Protagonist X completely curb stomped the major badasses of setting Y, and the author outright saying only Protagonist X when armed with heavy antivehicular weapons and enough time to prep an ambush has a chance against protagonsit X. It just completely ruined the SoD required for this fic.

It's not about who should have won, its that you're not giving enough justice to important characters, and favoring one side of this crossover.

Point taken. I guess it was kind of a manifestation of the worf effect as detailed here:
The Worf Effect - TV Tropes
IMHO Spartan IVs are just too inexperienced to deal with and adapt on the spot to a unknown threat like Yamato. If Hoya hadn't just blindly charged into the tunnel thinking that he could overwhelm whatever was in there with brute strength, then he very well could have come out on top using his superior speed/reflexes and CQC training. It's just that Yamato's unexpected toughness caught him way off guard and gave Yamato an opening to land easy hits that she otherwise wouldn't have been able too. In a fight where they knew each other's capabilities, Yamato would have a very, very hard time catching Hoya. There will be plenty of badassery from Spartans coming, rest assured (just not in the next few chapters).
