A New Beginning
A New Beginning

The atmosphere at Hogwarts changed drastically. It seemed gloomier - there was significantly less open conversation and more whispers and glares, directed by everyone toward everyone else that wasn't a part of the particular friend group. It seemed the drama existed even among the Hufflepuffs. Every student was more cautious, and Harry kept receiving a number of hostile stares and even the occasional sneer, often followed by its giver making as much distance between themselves and him as possible. It was almost as though he was a source of leprous blight upon the world, only approachable by his actual friends.

As foretold by Draco Malfoy, Harry experienced some light and unpleasant bullying. It was rather conventional - before the Sorting Ceremony, a group of Gryffindor boys approached and cast a few Sticking Charms on his shoes. He'd simply removed the spells.

As they approached to perform their second attempt, Harry casually fired a single hex at their feet, in the exact moment when Professor McGonagall turned away to whisper something to Professor Flitwick. It made them stop and go away, glaring at him from across the Great Hall.

After the Sorting Ceremony, the Headmaster approached his golden owl podium. Headmaster Dumbledore's arm was in a sling, and though his expression remained typically jovial in his greeting of the students, there was an occasional flicker of watchful caution that slipped out now and then.

"I welcome everyone to yet another year at Hogwarts," the Headmaster said. "As always, before we begin what I'm sure is going to be an excellent repast, I must perform a public service announcement - as some of you may know, the Wizengamot has recently passed the MWADTAH Act."

Harry's eyebrows arched slightly. It was mentioned in last week's Daily Prophet. The Mandatory War Against Darkness, Terrorism, and Hazards Act. It put the country in a state that was basically only a couple of steps removed from martial law. It made Harry consider what kind of benefit the Azkabanite derived from shaking up the hornet's nest.

It's obviously a method of forcing the Ministry to waste its manpower. A quarter of the Aurors and most of Azkaban's personnel are going to be concentrated here, in a shitty school in Scotland, instead of fighting the Death Eaters or protecting the Ministry. If I was in our unknown actor's shoes, I'd be aiming to strike London next.

"As a result, you may see Aurors and Dementors patrolling on the school grounds with some regularity. It's requested; and indeed, potentially crucial for your continued well-being, that you do not approach or speak to them, and continue about your day normally. Henceforth, Hogwarts students are also no longer permitted to be outside of their quarters after dinner. The Prefects of each House are going to ensure that everyone gets back. Astronomy lessons are going to happen under mandatory supervision."

The Headmaster spent a couple of minutes laying down the usual - such as the concept that entering the Forbidden Forest was forbidden, that students were not permitted to attach magically fireworks to one another then activate them, and so on. Near the end, they were greeted to an unexpected surprise.

"And finally, I'd like to introduce a new member of our custodial staff - Ms. Artemis Nettlebane. She'll be assisting Mr. Filch, at the very least for the duration of this year, as he's still in the process of recovery from his wounds."

There was some polite clapping among the students, as the woman in question stood up, and Harry noted that most of the male students were clapping with considerably more vigor - their new custodian was pretty and young, with streaked strawberry blonde hair, appearing to be a recent Hogwarts graduate. She also possessed a figure that was best described as flattering. A minor fortune that she wouldn't be teaching them, as most of the boys wouldn't be able to maintain their focus in the same room as her.

"Hm, I get the feeling this is going to be an interesting year," Neville muttered, jaw resting on a hand, its elbow itself placed on the table.

"Definitely will be," Harry agreed.

[ ] Write-in
[ ] Maintain Standard Coursework
- A balanced spreadsheet of skills.
[ ] Astronomy OWLs - At last, the Ordinary Wizarding Levels; lodge your request with the Deputy Headmistress.

At the moment you have 10 Gnosis.

[ ] A Song of Forever [5 Gnosis] - Increase your Skill with a chosen discipline of magic instantly, up to a third of a stage higher, though with modestly decreasing returns past the level of Adept. May be purchased multiple times.

[ ] Aermora Bravus [17 Gnosis] - Any of your Great disciplines that are not yet Master-level are raised to Master instantly. It'll require a commensurate amount of time sunk into studying the subject, but you'll find yourself catching onto its principles with a rare instinct and hunger, achieving the work of several years in several months. Allows you to write the OWLs for the subject in question as well, should you manage to purchase this before the year is out. It may be something of a gamble, though.

[ ] Guardian-Repelling Middle Finger [25 Gnosis] - A Unique Improvement. Allows you to deliberately suppress your Magic Power to any level below the one you actually possess. In theory, it would've allowed you to become a Muggle or Squib, and derive any of the potential benefits of such depowered states; however, in practice, Singularity Attainment interferes with this; it's not possible for you to drop below Magic Power 3.5, no matter how much you attempt to suppress and choke your inner excellence. Its benefits are uncertain and probably not as great as you imagine them to be, especially now that its entire point has been shattered into figments.

All higher Improvements are barred from your sight at this time. Maybe invest in eyes that don't require glasses.

[X] With the other Chosen, find the secret passage used by the potion thief, and take a look at their base if possible. Geist helped narrow down its location last year, and with the Chosen's abilities, it should be relatively easy to find.

[] Reputation Cleansing Plan
- [] Practice runes with friends
- [] To visit Dumbledore. Explain to him everything that has happened so far -tell him about your Atlantic dreams and the mysterious warnings of the ghost. Tell us about your experience with Azkaban and ask him to share with you what he knows. Offer to make horoscopes for him and those he wants every month. Offer him your skills in runes to strengthen the defense of Hogwarts.
- [] Actively communicate with Hufflepowers and the inner circle
- [] Ask the inner circle and your friends to spread rumors that Harry is a genius in astronomy and that's why he was able to find out about the danger and warned Dumbledore, but Harry did not know what kind of danger awaits, so the incident could not be prevented. In order for the tragedy not to happen again, Harry and Dumbledore arrange monthly divination sessions.

Ah, the other downside to shitty sight.
First time I see one, honestly. Though I need glasses as well, so perhaps I should go get them.

No way in hell there isn't some, say, Dark Alchemy means of changing our eyeballs. Perhaps noticeable and risky, but hey- it's a solution.

Do we have reason to think the potions' thief is still active just because we didnt catch them last year? And even if so, why are they relevant and worth pursuing when last year they were dismissed as unimportant?

It's a chance to flex Harry's investigative abilities but that seems like the main benefit beyond potentially attracting Dumbledore's attention for *spy stuff.*

The shrieking in the dungeons and the pet disappearances seem connected to them, for one thing.

[X] Plan New beginnings
-[X] Visit Dumbledore at the earliest opportunity. Explain to him everything that has happened so far - tell him about your Atlantean dreams and the mysterious warnings of the Wraith. Recount your encounter with the Azkabanite and ask him if he can share with you about what they have uncovered so far. Offer to make horoscopes for him and others every month, under his guidance about the involved people in the divination. Involve aid of relevant personale like the Divination professor and others.
-[X] Visit the Chamber of Secrets with the Chosen. Pick up Book of Dark Law if it's there, have everyone start using the resources. And the Secret of the Oceans. Get Ron to talk to the Basilisk about the Founder's era and listen in with Geist translating for potential discrepancy by Ron - to gauge if he trusts us. Also, make careful use of the map to make sure you guys don't getting caught and set up alibi.
-[X] Request the inner circle and your friends to help reign in the rumor mill about the attack last year. Disclose with proof that Harry being a prodigy in Astronomy was why he was able to portend the omens and warn Dumbledore. He was still unclear about the exact nature of the danger other than the strong sense of premonition just before the fight began. Ask Dumbledore if you should make a public address in the great hall to the bereaved.

I'd like to modify the discord plans so they're shorter if that's okay. So we can focus on action economy..

Patronus would need a lot of Gnosis to select the animal guardian though.. There is a Dementor taming spell Geist knows. Perhaps that would be more useful? I'm all for a Patronus vote though. But we should save up to get the Dementor Patronus.

[X] Start learning the Dementor taming spell under Geist. Research Patronus (but don't invest Gnosis on a form)
[X] Plan Groundwork

Edit: It would have been better to get started on the Diary Network for infospec to boost our Horoscope abilities (like we did on the Gilded King) But we have low PR now..

Edit: - A spell that lets you bind a Dementor to ignore you completely and weakly direct its attention towards other, particular targets. Obviously, useless without a Dementor, but Geist claims it'll be completely priceless once you inevitably end up in Azkaban.

Ah. Visiting the Chamber with the other Chosen is great. Ron could use some buffs.

And Hermione and Neville too. We need to get these people start talking about Dark Arts. Then Hermione would bring up her Ravenclaw circle. She'd also be able to apply her Sage abilities on the two books and helping bring Ron and Neville upto speed on DA. The Alchemy primer book would be useful for Ron and Hermione too. The main thing is to start playing the game like a Hufflepuff and getting everyone to work together from the start synergizing all their talents and abilities.

We might also have a stronger exploration roll with four people and the actual Heir present. Having an actual parseltongue speaker would make communicating with the Basilisk easier too. We'd be able to ask questions about the Founders era. Picking up the Secrets of Oceans might be prudent too - it might offer clues about the Atlantis doom mystery.

-[X] Approach Dumbledore with the offer of creating Horoscopes for him, the faculty, your friends, and any other people of interest (raise Geist's points regarding a possible attack on London and ask if Dumbledore knows anyone who might benefit from your help). Request the aid of relevant personnel such as the Divination Professor and, to a lesser degree, the Astrology professor. Inform your fellow Hufflepuffs of such arrangements and ask them to pass that knowledge along as something that did not at all originate from you (Hopefully this will help you establish some credibility)
-[X] Enlist the help of the inner circle in your Occlumency practice, up to and including bringing in inner circle graduates to provide you with extra training and lessons, assuming that such is possible. While you are at it, share the Nightmare-Dissolving Solution with the Inner Circle's Apothecary Division.
-[X] Use the Marauder's map and your rats to spy on the Castle's new security and the students to observe patterns, gatherings and possible security flaws (for example, poor coverage of Aurors around areas with hidden passages). Proceed to anonymously tip Dumbledore of your discoveries.

I'm not sure if we should reveal the map to Dumbledore or not.

@Birdsie When will we get a vote about what Geist will be teaching us this year?

Only comment I have is that I don't see why we're anonymously tipping Dumbledore, the secrecy seems unnecessary and also after last time he probably suspects Harry anyway.

No need to inform him of Harry's methodology, if that's what you're worries about. Harry can always act the inscrutable diviner.

Harry having inside knowledge over the security patterns around the castle, up to and including the usage of the marauder's map, could be considered a security breach and handled accordingly should anyone find out.
For example, if they dig deep enough they might piece together that we can talk to rats and then do something about it, limiting our own ability to gather knowledge within the castle.

I'm unsure as to how much I trust Dumbledore over this issue, and I am uncertain if I want him to know about the Marauder's map in the first place, or more precisely that it's in our possession.
