Hangar Queens: A Modern Military Mecha Satire

[X] Second Lieutenant Richard "Skywalker" Buck.

Benching Buck just makes sense.

Imagine, you could call him Bucky, and then he'd die on mission, but later it would be revealed that he actually was captured alive somehow and turned into a brainwashed assassin and I don't want to get turned into a popsicle and skip forward into a wholly different setting a lifetime into the future, that would be silly and jarring.

Also, maintenance and bugged targeting system and whatever.

[X] Second Lieutenant Patrick "White Knight" Hansen

IC it makes sense, I don't think the squad leader is keen on taking his hothead into an urban environment with high possibility of civilians being around.

I feel like Clarke will just nap and make acerbic comments about sitting out but buck would be really awful about it.

[X] Second Lieutenant Patrick "White Knight" Hansen.
Base stats: +2 Combat, -1 Leadership.
Squadron role: Pointman.
Modifications: +Ballistic shield.
Very low concern for collateral damage.
Between having the least concern for collateral damage and being the least effective against enemy types, he can be benched first.

[X] Second Lieutenant Patrick "White Knight" Hansen.
Hansen doesn't seem like the best option when we're possibly going to be working with allies to attack a city. Also, more collateral damage could aggro those SAA pockets on us during the battle.

Last night, I experienced a nightmare in which I somehow turned this quest into a super edgy and grimdark version of itself, thereby alienating all my readers. It got so bad that people wrote long screeds in the thread about just how edgy and grimdark it got, and one particularly angry reader sent me a massive PM chastising me for having the narration be overly obsessed with how bloody menstruation was, when there were ISIS fighters exploding left and right.

And, even worse, it was a militarily inaccurate edgy and grimdark version of itself. :o

Thankfully, nothing like that has actually happened in this quest.

Benching Buck just makes sense.

That does sound incredibly silly. I wonder who would write something like that.

Final stat distribution: +3 Maintenance, -2 Combat, -1 Leadership.

So if this is our stay block...

[] Second Lieutenant Ricky Eagle Buster Johnson III.
Base stats: +1 Maintenance, -1 Combat.
Squadron role: Sharpshooter.
Modifications: +Advanced radar.
High concern for collateral damage.

Why are our stats listed like this? Makes us look too normal. Aren't we basically an engineer that joined the airforce because he fucked up in college?

Define "normal". :p

Those are the stats granted to you by your personal background, i.e. by selecting the Unguided Genius background. Presumably, everyone else has their own dark and mysterious past that contributed to their current stat block.

Then those stats are then added to the stats granted by selecting the Air Force as your service branch, which you may recall were +2 Maintenance/-1 Combat/-1 Leadership. Thus you get a total of +3 Maintenance/-2 Combat/-1 Leadership from character creation.

Actually, I really should standardize the display order of the stats. It was fine to display positives / negatives when comparing chargen options, but it makes comparing actual characters confusing.

The reason I chose to display the stats like that was to make it clear they were inherent to the characters themselves, before being modified by being in the Air Force. But in hindsight, it's unreasonable to expect people to add -1/+2/-1 in their heads, so I should go and fix that too.

[] Second Lieutenant Antonia "Predator" Clarke.
Base stats: +1 Combat, -2 Maintenance, 0 Leadership.
Total stats: 0 Combat, 0 Maintenance, -1 Leadership.
Squadron role: Rifleman.
Modifications: +Smoke grenade dispensers.
Low concern for collateral damage.
Mecha previously damaged by IED, subsequently repaired.

[] Second Lieutenant Patrick "White Knight" Hansen.
Base stats: +2 Combat, 0 Maintenance, -1 Leadership.
Total stats: +1 Combat, +2 Maintenance, -2 Leadership.
Squadron role: Pointman.
Modifications: +Ballistic shield.
Very low concern for collateral damage.

[] Second Lieutenant Richard "Skywalker" Buck.
Base stats: 0 Combat, +2 Maintenance, 0 Leadership.
Total stats: -1 Combat, +4 Maintenance, -1 Leadership.
Squadron role: Grenadier.
Modifications: -Bugged targeting system.
Medium concern for collateral damage.

[] Second Lieutenant Ricky Eagle Buster Johnson III.
Base stats: -1 Combat, +1 Maintenance, 0 Leadership.
Total stats: -2 Combat, +3 Maintenance, -1 Leadership.
Squadron role: Sharpshooter.
Modifications: +Advanced radar.
High concern for collateral damage.

Hopefully that's clearer for everyone.

So he's just a better version of us stats wise. Must have taken the bugged target system as a penalty for those stats

It only just occurred to me to look at net stats for our characters, yeah. Ricky Eagle Buster Johnson III gets out okay with a total of 0, but Clarke is at -1, while Hansen is at +1 total and Buck is at a total of +2. Kinda wondering how Clarke's terrible stats happened backstory-wise.

[x] Second Lieutenant Patrick "White Knight" Hansen.

Stats aside, I wouldn't put Hansen near Syrian, potentially allied forces if I had a choice.
He seems too likely to err on the side of "well they might be terrorists and we're authorized to kill them".
Works best on a front where the lines are either well defined, or theres no lines and well...go nuts?

I have absolutely no idea what I'm voting for. I just like to see Tayta suffer.

[x] Second Lieutenant Patrick "White Knight" Hansen.
