You ask to move this conversation into the living room. The doorway was not the place for this sort of talk.
You tell her everything, the theft, , the family, and the ghoul's death. After some intinal worry she seemed to take everything in stride, calmly nodding along to everything you said.
"Do you regret killing this man?" She asked evenly
"Only that it had to happen." You replied, resolute about your actions. "He would have killed me and that entire family had I given him the chance. I defended myself, simple as that."
Mom put a sympathetic hand on your shoulder "Good. You can't regret self defense, taking a life is horrible but when you have to do it, you cannot let it burden you afterwards."
You were surprised, you had feared mother would think you were becoming some sort of monster for what you did. Instead she was okay with it. You killed someone and it was okay.
"Now about this family." She said cautiously.
"I made sure the daughter's camera didn't have any pictures of me and I let them go." You explained
"Did they get a good look at you?" Mom asked
"I don't know. It was dark , but we did talk. Maybe. It's not like the police will go after someone based on a brief description."
"I know I know." Mom looked hesitant, biting her lip nervously "I'm not saying you should have killed them, I'm not. I probably would have in your position but that's just me."
You stared at her with shock, mom had always been the pragmatic sort but that was extreme.
"You're a ghoul." She said defensively "If they reported you to the police and the police went after you, you would be killed without mercy. Imagine if a normal person was put in a room with another person. They're handed a gun and told there's a fifty percent chance the other person will kill them. Most people aren't going to take that big of a risk. Conventional morality becomes rather complicated for someone like you."
"But that was a family, they didn't do anything wrong." You said quietly.
"I know, and if things were fair we would not be having this conversation." She explained "But things aren't fair, for you more than most. But honestly, you did good. You made sure they had nothing on you and acted maturely. Next time probably won't be so simple but for now, I think you made the best of a bad situation."
"Thanks." You weren't quite sure how to feel about what mom said but her support was very welcomed.
"Not to be morbid." She asked "But what did you with the body?"
Now came the awkward part.
"I stuffed it in a dumpster, after eating some of it." You admitted. No sense lying about it.
"You ate the corpse of a hobo ghoul?" She looked more than a little stunned
"Well two bites of it, then I removed the partially eaten arm and stuffed it in my backpack." you explained
"Please tell me you put in a bag first." She looked a bit ill at the thought.
You nodded, couldn't have it leaking on your textbooks after all, those things cost a lot of money.
"Well I suppose it's important you don't always depend on me for food, and I'm hardly one to judge on the um, let's say quality of the meat. Curious though, was it different?"
"It was foul tasting, not like human food foul tasting, but just rather unpleasant. It was coarse and tasted spoiled."
"That's interesting." Your mother's scientific interest was peaked "You always hear cannibalism among ghouls is high. If it's not a matter of taste then is it just simply desperation?"
"Well I'm not that desperate." You replied
She nods. "Well... I'm sorry your evening was so crap. Pathetic I know but I really can't figure out what to say right now, besides maybe don't wear the ring like that anymore."
"So you're not upset?" You asked hesitantly
"I'm terrified out of my mind that something nearly happened to you." She said, her voice wavering. "But no, I'm not upset with you."
She grabs you in another hug. Holding you as tightly as she could, her voice shaking with fear "I wish I could tell you that tonight was a one time thing, that you won't have to put yourself at risk like that again. But in truth, it will probably only get worse from here. Things like this have a habit of escalating once they start. You will find times were you will struggle to stay alive, to make the right choice. Just remember that you have just as much right to live as any other person on the planet, ghoul or human. You're not a monster, no matter what the world says. Just promise to be more careful next time."
"I'll try." Was all you could manage.

The weekend arrived. Life had to move on. Homework was surprisingly light all things considered and you found yourself with a bit of free time. Normally you had a routine but after the attack things felt different, you felt like you should do more.
Weekend Plans
(Pick Two)
[] Learn to fight (You can't safety practice with your Kagune, but you can at least start learn how to fight conventionally)
[]Ghoul Research (You know shockingly little about your own kind. The Internet is fully of rumors, lies and half-truths. Perhaps the Library might provide some more insight.)
[] Track down Jess (The human thief is a bit of a loose end, loose ends are dangerous)
-[]Give a description of the girl to Mom's friend Richard
-[]See if anyone in the area knows about her and Alex
[] Attempt to socialize (You're rather lacking in the Friends department, perhaps the time is now to change that.)
[] Go Shopping with Mom (Hey, something might happen)
[]Write in.
