Future Written In Blood (Character Creation)

"I can tell you what didn't kill him," Jacobson said. Of all of the coroners, he was probably the most arrogant, though also quite good at his job. He had a shock of hair that spiked up as if he were going to a punk rock concert, and he often played loud music while he was working.

And of course he was waiting for a reply. So a reply was given, in a small office in which a decision would be made that would, as it turned out, change quite a few things. "What didn't?"

"Not the stab wounds. The guy died of a heart attack within a two minutes of being stabbed...two minutes before."

That was...unexpected.

The case seemed open and shut, merely a matter of dotting the I's more than anything else. The Middle City Police Department had plenty of murder cases to deal with, and a Mayor who thought he was an ally because he could talk about putting down the trash. There was far too much work to waste, even for a hot-shot homicide detective who didn't have to panic over whether this case or that will break their numbers for the year.

Principal Jeremy Black, a well respected man of the community, at a school not particularly known for violence, a suburban school in other words, had been stabbed to death by one of his students, Larry Stevens. While they hadn't talked to his friends and family, he wasn't known to be violent, or particularly troublesome, and he was in fact a very popular student, and the center of a football team that had gone to State last year. He'd somehow gotten both a gun and knife, broken into the study of Jeremy Black, and...happened to witness his death by heart attack, and then stabbed the corpse thirty-seven times anyways?

Larry had then shot himself in the mouth with the pistol he'd brought, the sound of which, and not, oddly, the stab wounds, had brought in others.

If there was no murder, then there wasn't even a crime.

Yet...something about this seemed off. There had to be some sort of motive, and perhaps it had been the shock of seeing his student there to kill him that had led to the heart attack? It was open and shut, except for all the ways it wouldn't stay shut in their mind.

"I've seen that look in your eyes before. Are you really going to do it again? Look into stuff off the clock? It's not your murder. Heck," the coroner said with a grin, "It's not even a murder."

"Maybe...let me think, please."

What do they do?

[] Do nothing. It's not their case. [Doesn't end the Quest, but does mean timeskip.]
[] Interview the friends and family of the supposed perp.
[] Look into Jeremy Black, his past and what is known about him.
[] Research the school, try to get a feel for the sort of environment that might foster murderous hatred.

Character Creation!

[] Name: Subject to veto.

Gender:
[] Male.
[] Female.
[] Write-in. Vetos, again.

Traits

Talent--Choose 1

[] Dogged interviewer: Where others would give up, you have a real talent for digging into someone's story and trying to find the contradictions, if there are any. Some people think it's annoying, but you think it's only sane.
[] Forensics Fanatic: The evidence, that's where a case is solved. Find out what the evidence points to, gather any and all hints of the act, and it will point you to the solution.
[] Hardy Boy (Male)/Nancy Drew (Female): With a certain obsession for details and constructing narratives, your cases have best been served by your ability to delve into means and motive, constructing elaborate timelines and careful examination of the human heart.
[] I am a Liar: S/he is remarkably good at deceiving people. Playing games with costumes and props, with sympathy that turns out to be nothing more than a ruse. It certainly doesn't make one popular with the criminals, but...what can you say?

Background--Choose 1

[] I was born in the gutter: You are very good at understanding and sympathizing with those who are poor or outsiders, whether children or adults. People like that will trust you more, and be more willing to open up to you and work with you.
[] A little crooked: You aren't corrupt, but you do know some pretty bad people, and you have a decent bevy of what others might call CI's (Confidential Informants). Though, considering that they're junkies and the like...well, it isn't as if they're that different from who your parents were, all things considered.
[] All American Boy/Girl: Born to a middle class family, and living, up until joining the police, a middle-class life, you're able to relate to those sorts of people, getting more information out of them, gathering more clues from them, and understanding their mindset quite well, all things considered.
[] Fortunate Son/Daughter: Born to relative wealth and political connections, your money does sometimes make it hard to relate to other people, but it does mean that you have a few useful contacts, even in the mayor's office.

Hobby--Choose 1

[] I know kung-fu: A black belt, in fact. It hasn't been that useful, since a homicide detective doesn't exactly fight ninja, but who knows?
[] Puzzle Me This: Sudoku? That's easy. Word searches? So last year. Your talents are enough that you have a certain skill for decoding patterns and ciphers, as well as generally having a fun, relaxing hobby for the long, boring stakeouts.
[] Newshound: Every day you read something. Every day you learn something. Nothing that makes the news, whether paper or television, will miss your grasp, giving you more clues if you can sort through all of the clutter.
[] Online Savvy: Unlike so many adults, you aren't square, and more than that you know that your way around the "social medias" as the new Mayor calls them. Unironically.
[] Write-in an idea, and I'd flesh it out!

Odd Traits--Choose 1

[] A Drink In Hand: You admit to having a drinking problem sometimes! For instance, sometimes you can't get the alcohol down fast enough! It does help people underestimate you, among other things!
[] Kinda Fruity: You liked fruit. Bananas, Kiwi...and of course, Apples. If you aren't eating fruit, then what are you actually doing with your life?
[] Fitness nut: Eating well, exercising all the time, you're the kind of person who shops at Whole Foods, eats a salad for lunch, and can personally run a mile and not even be panting at the end of it. Pretty useful for chasing people down, even if people look odd at you.
[] Future Diabetics Association: You eat sugar. And sweets. And more sugar. And more sweets.
[] Odd Taste in music: You listen to and rave about bands that either are A) Obscure, or B) Really, are you sure you weren't born in the wrong decade?
-[] Details, please, if you choose this.

Character Sheet:
Name: Alex
Position: Detective in the Homicide Unit.
Gender: Ambigious/Genderqueer.

Style: Lying, deception, and noting down deceptions. Alex is good at tricks, traps, and more than that, costumes. And their knowledge of criminals, as well as their contact with more than a few shady types, means that they always have grist for their investigations, and they have a certain sense of what kinds of lies they can and can't get away with. They are a master of disguise, all things considered, and they watch people both for what they show, and what they don't.

It's calming, even soothing.

However, they do sometimes drink too much, and their tastes are rather odd. In their mind, a hut and a jeweled pavilion are all the same, and so one day they might drink expensive wine socially, and the next drink cheap vodka alone. It's all about the high, and all about unwinding.

Combining it and people watching is, however, sometimes hilarious to other people.

Dramatis Persona:
Dramatis Persona/Suspects.

Police:

James Morris: Alex's partner on homicide, a thin African-American man who Alex considers a friend. Very good at interviewing witnesses, very sharp and deliberate, sometimes too quick to make assumptions, however. Early thirties.

Frankie Garcia: A twenty-three year old police-officer in narcotics division. She used to go to Mid-Hill, and also used to be a Mathalete. Positive, believes in the job, tries to give it her all, no matter what. Alex kinda likes them, honestly.

Nathan: A police officer in his forties, in Narcotics Division with Miss Garcia.

Sergeant Hill: Homicide Sergeant and Alex's immediate superior, a specimen of Swedish-American manhood, very concerned with how things look, and with keeping up good stats.

High School:

Wendell Adams: A loner, age eighteen, bullied by Larry. Incredibly smart, but with few hobbies to connect him to even other 'geeks'.

Patricia Baker: Larry Steven's freshman year girlfriend, and one of his best friends. She can't believe he'd do it and she's defended his actions, even involving Wendell. Seems genuinely shocked. Eighteen years old, 4.0 GPA.

Jeremy Black: Principle of Mid-Hill High School. In his early fifties, he has held this particular post for almost two decades. He is regarded by some as showing too much favor to athletics, and not enough to academics. Murdered on October 3rd, 20XX.

Damien: A gay teen, age eighteen, who smokes and is in Mr. Sellers class. Has a crush on "Jack" one of Alex's personas, and is providing recordings of Mr. Sellers classes for "Jack."

Coach Isaacs: The coach of the football team, he engaged in very, very questionable and illegal activities with his students. On October 9th, 20XX, he attempted to hang himself, and then died of a heart attack.

Dorothy Isaacs: The wife of the coach, she seemingly saved his life...only for him to die anyways.

Rachel Jordan: A bubbly seventeen year old cheerleader, who puts on some sort of valley girl act, considering she gets a 4.0 GPA. Very, very smart, and also more willing to be critical of how Larry acted to Wendell.

Bob Nathanielsen: An eighteen year old linebacker, huge and muscular. Smart, with a 3.7 GPA. Angry at the death, and how people are dismissing it. Thinks it doesn't make sense. Knows his rights/disengaged with the conversation when it got too personal. Larry's best friend.

Mr. Sellers: Debate teacher, firebrand, potential suspect. Very, very definitely a potential suspect.

Larry Stevens: A large, handsome star quarterback and high school Senior, age 18, at Mid-Hill High School. He seems to have bullied Wendell Adams, and before the supposed murder twice expressed hatred of Mr. Black. He was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound in Jeremy Black's study on October 3rd, 20XX.

Other:

Rick Lewis: A sixteen year old African-American teen, executed in his own home. He was Darius' lover, and according to Darius, he was clean. Dead on the 5th of October.

Darius: A gangbanger and muscle, he's clever, rough, and rather tough. Currently blames the Saints for his boyfriend's murder.

Mayor Buford: A slimy, slimy, horrible slug of a mayor hated by both major parties and in office entirely by a fluke, he's widely protested. In his early fifties. Died of a heart attack on October 15th, 20XX.

Slick Willy: A suspect in the 'Rick' case. Early twenties.

Evidence and Data
Case of the High School Non-Murder (?)

Principle Jeremy Black, of Mid-Hill High School, was seemingly stabbed to death by Larry Stevens, a senior at said school, and a winning quarterback of the Mid-Hill Ravens, who had almost won the state title last year, and were a shoo-in this year. This occured the evening of the 3rd of October, 20XX.

Yet, upon coroners examination, Jeremy Black has been determined to have suffered a heart attack a relatively short time before he was supposedly stabbed to death (but actually stabbed postmortem). Larry Stevens, the prime suspect, stabbed the corpse repeatedly, and then shot himself once in the mouth with a pistol belonging to his father.

There is no evidence of the presence of anyone else in the room at the time of the non-murder.

Throughout the 7th of October, Alex looked into the school, and found that Principal Black was, if anything, too much of a fan of athletes such as Larry Stevens. As well, their research has made them more familiar with the staff of Mid-Hill, allowing another avenue into the school without quite so much unfamiliarity.

Three friends interviewed. They report different things, but all seem to note that he had few direct reasons to dislike Principal Black, that he nonetheless stated a hatred for the man, and that he bullied, to some extent (their opinions varied as to how much) a student named Wendell.

On October the 9th, Coach Isaacs tried to commit suicide and then died of a heart attack when he was prevented from doing so. He had written a suicide note that revealed his numerous crimes, and this clearly means to Alex that the killer somehow controlled him, and then killed him when the suicide failed.

On October 13th, a conversation with Rachel revealed that she knew about the Coach's actions, and had posted, on the second of October, a recitation of his sins on a public-shaming site. This makes it far harder to know who or what is responsible for the murder, because it expands the guilt pool...and yet not as much as one might think, because the special knowledge of Mrs. Isaac's habits is still required.

Despite this, it's certainly frustrating.

On October the 15th, 20XX, the mayor died of a heart attack after a broadcast by a news agency revealing a rather disgusting audio recording of some things he'd said.

Continued investigation into this matter has turned up on a very few clues, and the act continues to seem rash based on the timing of the video and the mayor's death. On October the 19th, Oliver Weeks, one of the other people in the audio, died in a car accident.

Now all of them but Abramson are dead, but there is in fact a lead! Mr. Sellers, a teacher!

The murders are escalating in fact, and are now international in scope, and that means that, increasingly, there are thirty-one suspects.

The Dead Teen

A sixteen year old African-American boy, Rick Lewis, was shot to death in his own living room.

His mom claimed that he was not involved in gangs, and Alex suspects that there might be a connection between him and "D", aka Darius, a hardened gang-banger of 18.

Darius claims it might be revenge for him threatening some of the Saints, and has all but demanded help in solving this, and offered to do what he could. CI's are definitely needed beyond this point.

Consultation of the CIs, as well as Narcotics, has narrowed it down to 3-4 main suspects, and revealed that it was probably at least two guys involved, since you never go in solo, anyways.

In fact, it was three, and two of them are identified, as is a potential piece of physical evidence linking them to the scene. The case is progressing at lightning speed, actually!

WOOHH!
...

...Thinking of a character now.

Edit:

I don't know if the plan name gets the idea across well enough. It's meant to be the idea of someone who is heavily focused on getting information from the most prolific source around (common), and distilling it down to find the hidden gems of evidence that most people don't even realize exist (connecting the dots).

[X]Plan Common Connections
-[X]Write-in:

-[X]Hardy Boy

And someone tell me if I'm messing up the Plan formatting, I don't usually start them.
(Edit: Oh god I'm either messing up the formatting or NetTally doesn't show plans in the way I'd like, what is this)

You still need a name. Also, just to understand this: I don't know much about Deathmetal, so it might be hard to do good at that part, but if it wins, I'll try it.

Hahah, woah, what the shit? A Death Note quest? That actually harkens to the actual format and plot?

The craziest fucking thing about this is I think you might actually be able to pull off this fuckery.

Current plan is essentially 'Refuge in audacity' where we display ourselves as nonthreatening and/or incompetent, until we are close enough to the killer that they can't kill us for fear of exposing themselves.

Kind of like Light Yagami, except not evil. (Social manipulation and all that)

Edit:

I'm conflicted; Whilst that would be a fun play style, it seems way too suicidal for my tastes...

Should have a plan name to tie it all together. Even if it's just.

Also, separately from that, everyone should vote on the first action done, but separately from the plans. Think about the pros and cons of each one.

I can really see drink being viable if we go social manipulator rout - make them think 'There's no way this bored, lazy, incompetent alcoholic can be (X letter)'

So, basic background that stays the same no matter what.

You, whoever you are, are a somewhat hotshot homicide detective in the Mid-City Police. Mid-City is a middle-American city, not as bad off as Detroit, but still with plenty of crime, poverty, and violence, though also plenty of startup businesses and the like, right in the middle of a Biomed corridor, among other things.

It's a little slice of Americana, which means there's racism, poverty, wealth, inequality, apple pie, traditional high schools, gangland violence...

And you're a homicide detective. Last year your clear rate for murders was CRAZY GOOD and so you're in no danger at the moment from low performance, and everyone knows it's the solving statistics that matter.[1]

[1] Clear rate basically means, you go up on the docket, you have and work a case, and if it gets sent to trial (conviction is a separate thing, for obvious reasons) it's counted as cleared. Reputations, bonuses/etc, etc are all based on how well you can pull cases together, and YOUR NAME, however they do it (so each style is effective, at least for ordinary murders), is very good at this. They are not, however, world famous or anything like that. Hiding your identity will be more difficult than with, say, L.

You need a background, though. Also, preference would be for the 'action' vote to be outside of the Plan Vote, or something! :p

Not sure if it matters to the tally.

Do we want to gather as much evidence as possible whilst remaining unknown to the death note wielder, or should we be as upfront as possible, giving off the image as someone unimportant?

Edit:

If we go for social manip, we would be less able to gather info, but if we go for evidence collection, we will be in danger the moment they discover our name.

I'm currently favouring social because of how interesting that would be to play.
