Chapter One - Beginnings
When you start out everyone wants to be a hero. Its only after you've been in the game a while that you realise that villains have higher life expectancies. - Red

"You teach me and I'll teach you.

Gotta catch em all

Gotta catch em all

Pokémon."

Gary smiled as he turned off the TV, humming the theme to the show he'd just been watching as he got ready for bed. He turned sixteen today and earlier he'd received his first Pokémon from his grandfather, Professor Oak. When he woke up tomorrow morning he was going to set off on his journey.

His imagination conjured up images of the adventures he'd go on as he drifted off to sleep. Exploring the Sevi Islands with Eevee, standing triumphant after an awesome battle with Red, catching the legendary Zapdos…

And so he drifted off to sleep accompanied by teenage dreams, knowing that they weren't real all the while wishing they were.

*

Satoshi Ketchum yawned as he walked to Professor Oak's lab. He'd gotten up early today to make sure that he had time to get everything he needed to do in Pallet Town before getting on the road early enough that he'd be in Viridian City by dusk.

As he walked up the path to the Professor's lab he saw a figure coming in the opposite direction. Good, I caught him. "Gary!" He yelled, waving.

The figure stopped, glanced around and then started running towards him. "Satoshi!"

"You're setting out late. You'll have to hurry if you want to make it to Viridian before dinner" Satoshi commented lightly.

"Hah, what about you? From what Grandpa tells me you haven't even collected your starter yet." Gary responded.

Satoshi shrugged "Meh, I live on the edge. Although that reminds me." He pulled a Pokeball off his belt, leaving it empty, and chucked it to Gary. "It's for you. Consider it a setting off present, from both of us."
Gary's face turned solemn. "Thank you. Have you decided on your new name?"

"I'll be going by Ash now. What about you? Did you manage to get Blue?"

"Yeah, I'm not sure how though, colours are really popular. I think Grandpa pulled some strings."

Satoshi smiled, "Probably. Anyhow, I really do need to be off if I want to make it Viridian before dark. So see ya. Oh, and good luck Blue."

Gary beamed. "You too Ash."

*

Ash stared at the test in front of him then looked up at Professor Oak disbelief painted on his face. "Please tell me you're joking."

Oak looked to be smirking "I assure you I am quite serious. In front of you is the Kanto Region test for Pokémon trainer status. It was created after the young trainer fiasco in order to…"

He was cut off by Ash "Yes, I know why it was created. After the intervention of the Elite Four its intended to standardise the tests across Kanto so that there is never another incident like in Vermillion. I understand why it exists, in-fact I agree with it. What I don't understand is why I have to take it!"

Oak was defiantly smirking by this point "But Ash, you're a new trainer just setting out on your Pokémon journey, its part of the regulations that you need to pass this test to receive your starter Pokémon. After all, you wouldn't want me to break Kanto region regulations would you? I hear Lance feels very strongly about this test."

Of course you know that, you taught him. Heck you probably wrote half the test. "Lance doesn't scare me. You know what, I don't have time for this, give me a Pokeball and I'll go capture a wild Pokémon."
"Well maybe if you had come yesterday, like all the other new trainers you wouldn't have to worry about time. But I guess this means you don't want the Pokémon I specially picked out for you."

"Huh? What Pokémon?"

"You'll find out if you pass the test"

Ash contemplated it for a moment. On one hand he really did need to leave if he wanted to make it to Viridian before sun down whilst on the other the starter Pokémon were head and tails stronger than anything he'd be able to catch in the wild with-out support. "Fine, I'll do it. What's the pass mark?"
Oak had a decidedly evil glint in his eye "For most people its thirty percent, however considering your… confidence I wouldn't feel right passing you with anything less than sixty."

Old bastard can get away with it too Ash sighed. "Fine." And got started reading the test.

He'd barley finished reading the test before he burst out again, his voice incredulous. "You've got to be kidding me! There's no way this is the Kanto test."

Oak merely raised an eyebrow "Oh?"

"Ok, so around half the questions are realistic stuff like Pokemon care, survival and relevant legalities, but the rest of it is completely ridiculous."

Oak's eyebrow remained raised and he gestured for Ash to go on.

"The other half are insanely obscure questions about stuff which I can't imagine ever needing to know as a new trainer. For instance, question three and I quote" He began reading off the test sheet "'When is the proper time to attack a Snorlax?' Question fifteen: 'What is the proper use of a masterball?' Question thirty: 'What is the proper way in which to go about capturing a Legendary Pokémon?' Up until Question Fifty: 'Describe the correct manner in which to care for a Dragonite with a torn right upper quartile'"

"Well I guess its unfortunate that you need to get sixty percent in order to pass then."

Ash started at him.

"Well shouldn't you be getting down to work. You do have a time limit"

Ash bent down and got to work, muttering obscenities as he did so.

*

Ash was sat in front of Professor Oak scowling whilst the professor marked his test. Eventually Oak looked up, an evil smile on his lips. "Well Ash, 56%. Looks like you aren't getting that starter after all."

Professor Oak knew that Ash had by this point invested far too much time and effort into this farce to come out with anything less than a Pokemon and so he was unsuprised when Ash grabbed the test out of his hands and started leafing through it, looking for places he could possibly pick up a mark. Suddenly his eyes lit up and he shoved the paper back into Oak's view, a triumphant smile on his face. "Question thirty; how exactly is throwing a masterball at it not a correct way to capture a legendary?"

"You're supposed to ask it politely if it'd honour you by traveling with you after which if it says no you can…"

"All of which you can far more safely do if the legendary is in a masterball" Ash cut in.

"Not everyone has your talents Ash."

"Yet that doesn't make my answer wrong does it?"

"Very well, what was the next one you wanted to challenge me on?"

"Question 41; what exactly is wrong with 'become one with yourself'."

"You were too cryptic."

"Professor, that was a quote from your press statement where you coined the term Pokémon Master in which you described that as the method by which one achieved Mastery."

"I fail to see your point. Next?"

"Question 15."

Oak glanced at the respective question. "Ash, no matter how irritated this test might make you, 'catching Pokémon' is not an acceptable answer."

"What else can you use a Master Ball for?"

Oak thought for a second "Fine you can have the mark. But only because I know you'll never shut up if I don't and I happen to have better things to do today, what little of it there is left." He glared at Ash "Congratulations. You pass. Now if you'll follow me I can get you your starter."

*

Ash looked around the lab with distinct interest. He'd never been in this room before so it was interesting to see just what made up the world's premier Pokémon researchers' workspace.

It was a weird mix of a comfy office space, with plush leather sofas and what looked like an incredibly expensive oak desk in front of a bookcase filled with tomes, and a futuristic laboratory, with machines probably configured to do all sorts of things, a coms unit and a giant water dispenser.

I wonder what he uses that last one for. Maybe he just likes it. Nah-Oak's the type of guy who doesn't keep anything if it doesn't have a value, and it certainly isn't there for aesthetic purposes. Maybe its to keep up an aura a mystique. I mean I wouldn't put it past him… The effect's kinda ruined by the big plastic podium in the middle of the room though.

Oak had apparently seen Ash's eye's drifting to the podium and neatly predicted his chain of thought. "The podium's temporary. I use it to give new trainers their first Pokemon. Its part of the ceremony, apparently it's supposed to reflect the actual podium that they use in Indigo."

At this Ash nodded his head. Ahh symbolism, the beginning and the end of the journey. What a load of crap. "I can't help but notice that there seems to be something of a lack of Pokeballs on said podium though."

"Indeed. The last one was picked up earlier today. Too bad, you should have gotten here earlier." Oak said chidingly.

"I call bullshit. Regulations state that you have to provide a starter to any trainer who passes the test. Now I have a long trek to Viridian tonight so can you please just give me the starter." Ash countered in an exasperated tone. By this point he didn't care if it was a bloody caterpie – he could use it as bait for a stronger Pokémon. He just wanted this farce over and done with.

"Fine. Ruin my fun." Oak stated and pulled a Pokéball out from one of the pockets of his lab coat. The hell! He had it on him all along! He tapped the release button. "Ash meet Pikachu. Pikachu meet Ash"

*

"Really old man? A Pikachu? Of all the Pokémon in the world?" Ash exclaimed, once the electric rodent was safely back in its Pokéball.

"Yes Ash a Pikachu. I know they have a bad reputation, but really. That should be no issue for a trainer of your calibre."

"A bad reputation! That's a fucking understatement if I've ever heard one. I honestly don't know why you keep them on as starters-"

Oak cut him off. "Because they make extremely powerful Pokémon even without training; typically we give them to idiots who need a trial by fire or people with oodles of potential. You happen to fall in the latter category. Although 'potential' may be a misnomer…" Oak trailed off. "Besides, I have a feeling that you'll need the firepower."

Ash sighed. Oak made a good point. With my luck… "Fine. I'll trust you on this. So is there anything about this particular rodent I should know?"

"He's young. Less than three years old, so don't expect him to evolve for a while. However this one has higher than average electrical potential. It's already equal to that of a fully grown Pikachu. He was originally bound for a lab in the Orange Isles but due to some misfiled paperwork he ended up here instead." Ash's eyes widened slightly, he didn't believe for a second that it was an accident this particular Pikachu got re-routed. Oak must've pulled quite a few strings to get his hands on this particular Pokémon. Not that it would've been hard for him or anything, but still…

Ash nodded. "Could you call Surge and let him know I'll be dropping in within the next month or so?"

Oak nodded. "Well if that's everything then I'll be heading out." Ash started walking out of the lab only to be interrupted by Oak's voice.

"Actually Ash, there is one more thing…"

OOC: AN: Ugh, too much time writing quests. So yeah, found some notes based around this on my hard-drive and I wrote them up. Any and all feedback is welcome as is speculation. Also if any of you care I havn't dropped Tartarus or Luna Quest, I'm working on both (if rather slowly), this was/is a Catharsis fic.

Hmm, I normally don't like pokemon, in fact I normally hate it, but in this case, just this once, Watched.

First snipet of the next chapter. I estimate there'll be maybe 2-3 more snipits after this one. One dealing with Ash and one with Gary and maybe one other depending on how it works out. Any and all feedback is apreciated.

"Ladies and gentlemen of the press, today Professors Elm, Ivy and myself have come before you to announce a discovery on the level of Gunpowder. A discovery that will allow us to push the boundaries of science out further than ever before and lead humanity to a new Golden Age. We have through countless hours of experimentation and research discovered a way to bestow upon humanity the extra-sensory powers previously thought the exclusive domain of Pokémon…"

Clip from the press conference hosted by Profs Oak, Ivory and Elm in which they announced the discovery of the mastery method.

"I don't like this." Oak stated, talking to his coms module.

"Believe me Sam, you've made that plenty clear already" Replied the person on the other end, a middle aged man with spikey maroon hair.

Oak sighed. "Don't get me wrong. I understand why we're doing this, I even get that it needs to be done. Agatha and Sabrina are stretched to the limit, Surge is in critical condition and we can't trust Brock or Blaine. The moral boost alone we'll get from this makes it worth it, I still don't like it."

They both sit in silence momentarily, contemplating their situation before the other man stated. "Its worse."

"Pardon?" Oak replied, hoping he'd misheard the red haired man.

"The situation, its worse than what you outlined."

"How so?"

"We lost Cerulean two days ago."

Oak's façade of calmness shattered "I'm sorry. Did you just say that we lost Cerulean? As in the city." The other man nodded. "But how? Did Misty snap? Was it that Red Gyarados? Did Cyrus manage to sneak something past Agatha and Sabrina..." Oak trailed off. "What do we know?"

"At the moment? Not much. The city's been sealed off. But from what little Giovanni's managed to scrounge up it looks like Misty's sister Violet somehow managed a coup d'état."

The shock evident on his face, Oak tried to gather his thoughts. "That makes no sense. Misty was one of the greatest of the lost generation, she's not at our or Red's level but she's close. Violet on the other hand? Calling her an immature brat is overstating her importance, there's no way she should have been able to succeed in a coup. Unless…"

"She had outside help." The red haired man had apparently followed this line of thought already and come to the logical conclusion.

"Shit. You don't think Surge was a one off do you. You think it was a signal for a new offensive. That's why your recalling Red."

The other man nodded. "Not just Red. I'm bringing back everyone I can. Saber, Sheild, Loss, Ether. Heck, even Bruno and Lorelei. If it gets much worse I'll intervene myself."

It took a little time for Oak's brain to catch up with what the other man had just said. "You plan on… That's a very bad idea Wataru. You and I both know that there is a very good reason why the Indigo Plateau is never left undefended."

"Just what do you expect me to do then Sam? We're running out of cards that we can play. And you can't get involved, that'd be seen as a declaration of intent by the other Professors and you know how much Rowan would love an excuse to rain hellfire down upo our heads. Fact of the matter is that if it comes to it I can take Cynthia in a fight and she knows it if she sees me moving she should realise that she's gone too far this time and yank on Cyrus' chain." The red haired man sighed and for a moment he looked as if the weight of the entire world was resting on his shoulders.

"Maybe. I don't hold much hope for that though." Oak replied after a couple of seconds thought. His tone almost ominous.

"Neither of us are ready for total war. She'll tug him into line. Giovanni estimates that there's at least two years before she's ready to deploy her endgame. We'll be ready." The other man glanced at his wrist. "Sorry Sam, I've got to go. I'm meeting Clair in five minutes for an update on the situation in Johto. Lance out." The screen blinked out, leaving Oak alone in his labratory, his thoughts his only company.

Well, in the Pokemon Special Manga, Oak did whoop ass and go all the way to the finals with nothing but a Spearow iirc. In fact I think he wasn't actually beaten so much as stepped down when he satisfied himself that the new crop of trainers knew what they were on about.
Special is pretty damn special, though.

Hey guys, have a snippet this is somewhat out of order being in chapter three:

Ash looked around the office he'd been shown to by his erstwhile guide. There were paintings on the walls depicting dragons in flight, a view over the plateau that was likely unrivalled and, most damningly of all, the Indigo sigil embroidered into the carpet in front of a somewhat gaudy mahogany desk. He'd been here before.

Which was why he was totally unsurprised at the middle aged man who came striding in through a side door, his hair was flame red and he wore an indigo cape. Somehow the ensemble didn't clash horribly. "Lance, I should've guessed. Well you can have your records." Ash said before slinging them on the table.

"Ash." Lance said the word slowly, as if savouring it or, making a point. "Have a seat, we need to talk."

Ash took the hint for what it was and sat down in a chair in front of the desk before raising an eyebrow as Lance instead of sitting behind his desk instead strode over to the other side of the room and grabbed a spare chair before dragging it in front of his desk and sitting on it.

"Before you ask, I'm not joining the Rangers, IDL, Section 42 or Rocket." Ash said, pre-empting the question that he knew was coming. "I just want a nice peaceful journey, travel around, make friends, collect badges. That sort of thing, you know?"

"I wasn't actually intending to ask you about that, I have a different request to make. In just over a year Cynthia will be holding a tournament called the Lily of the Valley. Cynthia has been building up to this for almost a decade; the best of the best in the Region will be attending. She intends to use it to herald a new age of Sinnoan dominance over the region, you can of course understand why I find this problematic can't you?" Lance asked.

"Ok. I can see why you might find issue with this but I don't see how it affects me. Besides, couldn't you just not send a Kanto representative? Sure you'll lose face but how ba-"

Lance cut him off. "Because Ash, right now we look weak. Johto is in the middle of a fucking civil war because the Goldenrods can't keep their dick in their pants, Hoenn is pretty much owned by Teams Aqua and Magma because Steven is an incompetent jackass and to top it off Cynthia is making a power play." He stopped and took a breath. "Sorry Ash, my point is that if she pulls this off it doesn't matter how true it is, the other powers will assume that the League is weak. The Orange Islands will try to claim the Sevi Isles, Unova will start prodding us and that Orre'n invasion force that we all have nightmares about will become a reality."

Lance waited to see if Ash had registered what he said before continuing. "As for why you should care? One of the Sinoan trainers who'll be taking part possesses a Darkrai." Lance smirked, knowing that with that one sentence he had Ash hook line and sinker.

Ash on the other hand was barely restraining himself from hitting Lance. "What exactly are the requirements for entry?" He ground out through his clenched jaw.

"Mastery" Lance watched as the word took the wind out of Ash's sails.

"I'll do it. Now there anything else Lance or can I go?" Ash asked no longer wanting to punch Lance but still wanting to leave.

"I was hoping that your 'nice peaceful journey' could take you through Cerulean in the next couple of days."

Ash considered it, "I suppose it could, it's not like I have much of a plan. You'd have to get one of your Rangers to give me a lift though, set me down just off route four." Ash said, not having a flight capable Pokémon, something he realised he should probably fix. "Still why do you want me to visit Cerulean? Misty's a loyalist." Ash asked, fishing for information before he made a final decision.

Lance's face showed surprise for a second before it cycled through emotions faster than Ash could read before settling on pity. "I suppose you haven't heard yet, not surprising given you'd have been on the road when it happened. The Bloody Mist fell two days ago. Misty is missing in action." He paused before continuing. "I'm sorry, I know you two were close." He said, his voice sounding genuinely concerned at the end.

Ash sat silently, digesting what he'd just found out before deciding. "Fine. You have me for this one investigation." He stood up, saying "I expect my lift to be waiting when I get outside." Before walking out of the room.

Lance merely sat there watching satisfied, knowing that despite Ash's oaths and promises he had him right where the Dragon Master wanted him.

Huh........this is interesting.
so pokemon conquest in modern times?

Also, yeah I can see Giovanni and the Rockets working with the league in this kind of situation. There is no point in being economically and politically powerful if there is nothing to be powerful of. Out of all the teams the Rockets always had the most sensible of goals.

Indeed.

Okay, so after reading through all of the old stuff and the new snippet I'm going to go out on a limb and speculate that Ash is Red - he was part of that "Lost Generation" which is to say that group of trainers talked about in one of the earlier snippets that had oodles and oodles of fatalities when all these kids ran off helter-skelter into the wilderness with nothing but youthful enthusiasm and a single monster that may or may not have had all the killer instinct of a particularly dumb and lovable mutt.
You've pretty much hit the nail on the head regarding what the Lost Generation is. The Vermillion Incident that I mentioned in Chapter One is pretty much the definitive example of it; basically each gym gets a grant of money for each trainer that they send off on their journey in order to recoup the costs of providing starter Pokemon. At the time when the Young Trainers Act was passed the Vermillion Gym was bankrupt, so one person had a wise idea: Lower the requirements for trainer status and hand out low quality starter Pokemon that cost next to nothing to produce so that they make a large profit off each trainer. End result is that Vermillion Gym makes thousands and escapes bankruptcy and over five hundred eleven to sixteen year olds are sent out with a weedle as their starter and no idea how to use it. Almost all of them died. That was pretty much the death knell for the YTA.

At this point in time Team Rocket is some weird combination between an organised criminal group and a semi-legitimate espionage organisation. But yeah, that's essentially why they're working with the league. They'd rather that Kanto stays dominant.

Be honest.
This was 'inspired' (ripped off) from The Game of Champions, wasn't it?
Whilst I have read that and I can see the similarities I'd say that there are far more differences. Unless of course if your commenting on it being a slightly darker than canon fic in which case I'll point you towards the Sun Soul. Besides, when I started this back in June I hadn't actually read TGoC.

As to what I have taken influence from, the Young Trainers Act is stolen from some one chapter fic that I read over a year ago, and the other two fics that I've taken ideas from are The Sun Soul and Pokemon Master (AKA the first dark Pokemon fic). Moral of the story? Just because something shares some common themes (something which I'd debate anyway given how TGoC is about Red's quest for Mastery and this is... decidedly not that story) don't assume that one is 'ripped off' the other.

I'd encourage anyone who hasn't read The Game of Champions to go read it by the way, its an awesome story and Lamora is a great writer (way better than me).

Goodbye…

The word stayed with Ash as he strode out of the deserted clearing just off Route One, his last job before he set out finished. Well his second to last job, he still had to deliver Oak's forms to Indigo, why he couldn't just send them digitally escaped Ash though. Probably some security reason, after all there aren't many digital systems that a Porygon would fail to get into…

"Spear!"

Ash froze. That single noise jolting him out of his thoughts, barely moving a single muscle he slowly moved his head to look around. Around twenty paces to the left of him he saw a group of Spearow feasting upon some dead animal and above them circling was a single, predatory Fearow.

"Well Shit." He muttered. He'd been careless, not expecting to bump into anything remotely dangerous this close to pallet. Still, the odds of running into a flock of Spearow this far south were negligible at best, it wasn't even migration season!

Besides that, there was no way he was getting into a fight with that entire flock. It didn't matter how overpowered his Pikachu apparently was, taking on an entire flock of Spearow with a Fearow backing them would be suicide. With that in mind, Ash began to slowly move towards the trees that bordered Route One, hoping to Arceus that he wouldn't be spotted.

Step by step, he moved away from the flock, each nervewracking movement taking him closer to the safety of the trees.

Ten meters away.

Now five.

Three.

At two metres he jumped for the treeline, ignoring the stealth that had served him so well up to that point. As soon as he hit the ground he slipped out of his backpack and scrambled up and hid behind a tree, leaning on it whilst waiting to hear if the Spearows had noticed and gotten excited.

Nothing.

Ash almost collapsed in relief; that was far too close.

He waited for around ten minutes before wearily re-shouldering his pack and setting back off, far more carefully this time and being careful to skirt the Spearow pack. Maybe he wouldn't make it to Viridian by Sundown…

*

The entry into Viridian was nothing to be talked about. He got some rather piercing questions about why exactly he was out in the middle of the night but once he handed over his Trainers License thereby identifying himself as one of the handful of prodigies that the Professor endorsed each year the questions slowed in favour of understanding and understated awe. After all, it was expected for Oaks elite to perform far more insane things than merely travelling in the night.

Ash let them know about the Spearow flock and moved onto the task of finding a place that was open, let alone had places left for me to sleep, at 1am in the morning. It was easier said than done. He could've slept with the guards, they'd have likely been more than happy to give him a bunk in return for some stories, but he didn't have any that he was willing to share.

The Gym, supposed to be open twenty four hours, was closed. The Pokémon Centre didn't have any spare beds and besides 'who did he think he was coming in in the middle of the night and demanding a place to stay'. He was standing in a park debating the pros and cons of sleeping under a tree for the night when he heard it.

"Psst" A strange sound, like someone was trying to subtly get his attention, though why they'd be bothering with subtle was anyone's guess. It was the middle of the night, there was no-one else around.

"Psst" There it was again. He looked around the park and saw a man in a dark coat standing beside a tree trying to look inconspicuous and failing.

"Psssssst" Deciding to find out what the man was so enthusiastic about Ash started walking over to him, his hand drifting down to the Pokeball in his belt ready to let out his unnamed Pikachu in case the stranger had less than good intentions.

"You were calling?" Ash said.

"Not so loud" the man whispered loudly.

"I'm sorry, what were you calling me for?" Ash asked softly, he was getting the impression already that the man was either crazy or intoxicated.

"What are you doing in the park so early?" The man asked again at a whisper.

Ash deciding to play along replied "I only just got in from the road; I can't find a place to sleep so I was debating sleeping under a tree."

The man didn't reply for a second before muttering under his breath. "No, no, we can't have that." Louder he said, "Well I suppose I can put you up for the night if you're that desperate" before wincing at his own voice. He started walking off before turning back upon noticing that Ash wasn't following him, "Well what're you waiting for? Come on."

Ash shrugged and followed behind the man. He might as well see what the man was offering.

A/N: So yeah, chronologically this is somewhere inbetween the previous two snippets. Kudous goes out to Keeper whose acting as a sortof semi-beta for this chapter.

Right, Misty is a Gym leader, they must be utter badass's in this world. So I somehow doubt it.

So is Ash Red? Or his clone? Sons? Long lost brother? Time Travel Red? Because Ash and Red share to many traits, for that not to be a trait. And well Gray is Blue.

My understanding is that he wanted to get the name "Red", but had to settle for "Ash"

So I just found this and as I was reading, I had a thought in my mind:

Game of Thrones: Pokemon Edition.

Game of Champions and From the Ashes run along the same general lines with political intrigues and looming conflicts interspersed within battles between superhumanly dangerous animals and their obscenely young Trainers, and for that reason alone, I will watch this with great interest. Great interest indeed.

This is interesting. A bit darkish but interesting. I wonder where this will go.

Thank you for writing,
Beyogi
