#1 Prologue

Within the greater multiverse, the souls are the domain of celestial bureaucracy. Some civilizations vaguely intuiting bureaucracy's existence would consider the entities operating within it variously as angels, demons, fates, gods etc…What celestial bureaucrats considered themselves, however, was bloody overworked.
It was as if the bleedin' stupid dang meatbags couldn't contain from finding new and inventive ways of mangling their souls. And even worse were those blighters who managed to imprint their souls so strongly with their personalities that there was no hope of reusing that soul for a very long period of time and without an equally astronomical amount of effort employed by the appropriate celestial bureaucrat.

Just one such soul was a topic of discussion between two of bureaucrats. For reasons of simplicity, and due to the frankly insurmountable obstacle of their names being not only unpronounceable but also waster and denser than smallish universes, we shall refer to the two entities in question as respectfully Sid and Tad. And further encountered bureaucrat will thus likewise gain a generic name.

"Willya jist look a' it Tad me lad." Sid growled in the tone of someone whose last surviving nerve was only holding on due to polycarbon-tungsten sheeted cybernetic enchantments, and it too was on the verge of violently snapping.
His coworker did not spare him even half a glance but did grunt in an indication that he was listening.

"Not only did da daft twit achieve precisely copperplate shite with its life, just sittin' on its arse chasin' high all day every day, but then it had da sheer gall t' wrap itself so tight 'gainst its soul, I'd need ta stew it in a supernova fer an eon or three jist ta loosen it 'nuf t' make da bloody unravellin' a feasible prospect. I dinne have time for that shit, my backlog is too freaking long already. And da dam'd o'er'ead means I canne even drop it to some hellhole as an ant or a louse or sommat, nor somewhere some helpful demon or other soul devourin' 'tity might lurk, so as to save us the trouble."
Taciturn Tad just grunted once more in acknowledgment, still just as engrossed with his own work. Finally, he unbent enough to gruffly inquire.

"So whatcha gonna do wit'it?"

"Dump it in some misbegotten corner o' some deathworld and do me level best to forget it even exists, 'till someone starts askin' questions prolly. Why? Ya got a suggestion?"

"Well Sid, ya could forward it ta Gilli'n o'er in section 9.19/ψ12. I heard as those daft bastichs be collectin' bleaters such as tha' one fer some madcap project o' t'eir own."
Sid's face shifted into a sneer of deep derision.
"Bloody wankers da lot o' em section niners! 'Even't done a femtosecond o' 'onest work in their miserable existences. T'ey deserves this crap soul, and all o'em like it!"
Saying so, and as close to managing gleeful for an entity whose crankiness predates and overshadows big bangs, Sid spared no time to get the troublesome soul of our future protagonist off of his metaphorical limbs.

"Oy Gillian! Get over here! Those dour duds from section one just forwarded us a new candidate, and I have to tell you, it's an absolute beaut! Almost no dissipation whatsoever" One of the intake bureaucrats of section 9.19/ψ12 hollered cheerfully to his nominal superior.
"Well, what are you waiting for? Send it over! Send it over!" Gillian merrily bellowed right back.
"Or do you need an especially nice solicitation." She finished joking, even as the soul in question reached her.
It barely took her a cursory scan for the gaiety to transform into a genuine excitement.
"Oh, yes! Yes, I can see what you mean. It is almost perfect. Plug it right in! The figures we can gain from it might even prove to be an outlier! Ouh… Better make it isolated for simpler data retrieval. I can barely contain myself, this is going to advance our research, I can just feel it!"
"Are you certain boss? It doesn't really seem like it is as stroppy as our usual genius-loci subjects." Another bureaucrat opined in decidedly more careful fashion.
Gillian instantly deflated.
"Dang, you're right. Wouldn't do for it to fail to provide any worthwhile info, would it…" She muttered disconsolately.

[] "We can't risk it, while data might be sparse, place it in total isolation…" (easy mode – minimal challenges)
[] "We just have to be careful. If we take extra care with placement…" (lite mode – basic challenges)
[] "No risks, no gains. Proceed as planned. Oh…" (normal mode – normal challenges)
[] Write-in (hard mode – very challenging)

"… and make it a fort or something, that should further abate risks." Gillian finally decided.

[] Pat – genderfluid (default, confers no starting bias whatsoever)

Emily slowly rose up out of an absolute doozy of conk-outedness completely baffled as to what the dickens had happened been going on.
One thing she was sure of though, was that whatever it was she had smoked – or ingested - must have been some strong and probably bad shit because that was the only reasonable explanation for the weird trip she found herself experiencing.
For one Emily found herself feeling completely disjointed from her body, but in a way that felt anywhere close to similar to her previous chemically-induced out-of-body experiences.
For another, she found herself faced with, of all absurd things, I-kid-you-not, nothing but a message screen. A cheerful red one.

Congratulations #insertnamehere#!

Due to borderline unique properties of your soul, you have entered into the phenomenally rare and exclusive group of entities the multiverse over.
Thus you have been chosen to embark on an adventure of a lifetime and experience being inserted into a universe not your own as a genius loci - in your particular case as a burgeoning fortress!
For a long time, Emily could do nothing but stare at the absurd thing.
Well, it was not as if she could even actually stop staring at the blasted thing, seeing as, apparently, beside her own self, the screen was all there was in existence.
Finally, She found herself tentatively vocalizing her confusion.
"Oh...Kay?!?"
Instantly the screen vanished only to be replaced by a rapid series of blue ones.

After perusing the blue screens for a while, Emily finally gave up on trying to reason things out, gave a mental shrug and with a bemused:
"Welp, it seems there is nothing to it. Might as well see how deep the rabbit hole goes." made her choices.

AN

Well, Wellcome one and all to this particular piece of whimsy by yours truly.
The purpose of this quest is to give me a way to drag myself out of the writing stupor I've been wallowing in for far too long.
Thus it behooves me to candidly admit that literally the only plan I have for developing this quest is "try to have fun doing it"

Since I really don't care much for mathematics, by and large, the mechanics of this quest will be reduced to simple resource management.
The exception being a randomizer mechanic I call Fortune die.
See, it goes like this - every post I will roll a d100
if the result is 1 or 2 I will then roll either a d10 (for 1) or d20 (for 2) for mystery results :whistle:
if the result is an odd number (other than 1) you will get a boon of some kind. If the number is prime, you can request what the boon will be (within reason).
if the result is even number (other than 2) I will give you a hint. If the number is divisible by 10, you can specify what the hint will be about.
Now you might wonder how a hint can rival a boon? Well, it very much measures up because I have no intention of going deeper than the bare surface on explaining much of anything. The point is for you players to be as confused and contemplative and prone to mistakes as our poor protag.
But wait! There is more! For you see Fortune die will also be a rewarding mechanic. Basically, if I like some activity in this thread I just might award one or more Fortune die to the poster(s). If I'm in a properly jolly mood I could even be fairly generous with them. Conversely, if someone misbehaves, their chances to get an opportunity to roll go down as well.
This mechanic naturally necessitates discussion periods between posted chapter and voting time.
To start with let's say that we will not start voting for say 8ish hours? 7:00 AM EST. Noon CET

PS: Sory about the slight wonkiness of the tables. I'm still figguring out how to properly format them.

#1.5 Resolution and mini vote
Ok, back and closing the vote.
The winning entries call for normal mode, Emily and Plan Affinity Get.
As for the character, usually I'd either wait for a tiebreaker or flip for it, but just this once I decided to be nice and throw you guys and gals a bone.
See where Pat conferred no starting bias whatsoever, that also meant they offered no bonuses either.
By picking/making a write-in, you now get to vote on our protag's background (aside from being a stoner, that is) which will affect things down the line.

[]Rich idiot with no day job
[]Eternal student
[]Hapy-go-lucky landlady
[]Aimless artist
[]Erudite
[]Modern guru
[]Enterprising urban botanist

This will probably be a short vote 8-12 hours unless we get a lot of people, or RL takes me away again.

And Fortune Die gives you a chance to ask for specific info/clarification - I'm giving you next 5 hours to debate what you want to know. If there are no questions until then, you'll get a generic hint.

Sorry for the delay. All of these tables killed me. I must have been crazier than usual when I decided to use them. Luckily this should be the last time I have to do so many.

There are no words that could describe the sensation of being incarnated. One instant it was just her and the screens, and the infinite, claustrophobic void.
And then she WAS.

She was beaten ground and the ditch that had provided the earth for the short hardened earth embankment that was her rampart.
She was a rickety and drafty wicker longhouse and the blackened fire pit with few sorry-looking skinny green logs piled in front of it, that gave her an indescribable crackling sensation.
She was the deep and narrow hole into the hill she was situated upon, and the dozen feet of gathered artesian water of her well, that felt as it should weigh more than the rest of her new self combined.
She was the steep, narrow, low-ceilinged, tunneled incline near the lowest part of her walls that dug deeper into the hill and the small room of beaten earth with airwents digging up into her well shaft at the back, that seemed somehow ponderous.
She was the incongruous lone tree, over sixty feet tall, whose roots broke into her well, and the wicker nest woven into its boughs, flowing and moving and alive, as well as half a dozen tall rough boulders arranged into an outward pointing horseshoe formation beneath the leafy spread, and boy-oh-boy did those sones feel all kinds of fizzy.
She was a long mound of rock and earth, covered by grasses and weeds, with long narrow shelves of stone and wicker, smaller than even her cellar, and yet feeling deeper than her well.
She was a stack of relatively flat rocks, somehow stacked taller than two man's height, erected on the tallest promontory of her hill, that felt as nothing so much as an eye of an invisible storm.

Suffice to say, she was more than a bit overwhelmed.
"Whoo-o... I can feel everyth..." Unfortunately, her blissed-out revelation was suddenly broken by a whole deluge of different screens, accompanied by a cacophony of different sounds all played at the same time.

As those final ominous nasty red message screens (not even close to the nice cheery one she had first encountered in the void :sour:) /Emily started to hyperventilate in panic.
SHE. COULD. DIE!
No one said anything about dying, thank-you-very-much. She did not sign up for this. For that matter she did not sign up for anything! She was quite read for the trip to end. Unfortunately, she was darkly certain there would be no waking up from this particular nightmare.

After panicking for enough time for the sky to change from the grey of predawn to the rosy pinkness of the rising sun, she finally managed to calm and collect herself enough to at least begin thinking with any semblance of reason.
Gods how much she felt the need for some nice, calming, sweet smoke from her bong.
And with that thought she came crashing back into panic mode.
She was a Fort. She had no mouth, no nostrils, no digestive system, no bloodstream, no actual body parts required for the holy and ubiquitous experience of enjoying that sweet, sweet high that came from availing oneself with certain chemically derived or naturally occurring substances.
That thought made her curl herself into tiny little ball - until she dropped dead right into her core and experienced another screen
You withdrew into your core.
That snapped her back real quick.
With gritted teeth, and unusually steely bout of determination, she forced herself to concentrate on the most pressing issues right now. Like avoiding dying.
Luckily, now she knew exactly where her core was, and she remembered from that endless row of message screens that she had received a 'Move Core' skill so she could at least start on the most pressing problem.

Unfortunately it seemed that nothing in her new life was going to be easy, for as she exited her core, another white screen awaited her, this one with a message she was quite unhappy to see.

You withdrew out of your core
-5 Will
After a few minutes of fumbling, she finally managed to call her status screen back, and found to her dismay that her suspicions had born true for her Willpower shoved 95/100.
Damnation all, that was the resource stat responsible for actions. And she had just wasted a full 5% of it.
Pushing down another soul deep pang for a single wiff of Pot, she tried to use her 'Move Core' skill, and to pleasant surprise immediately intuited without the need to use it that would cot her another 5 Will to use. With a small mental prod she even intuited that it would cost her another 5 Will to learn more about any of her other common skills, but that examining the higher? stronger? rarer? skills would exact more cost. Some further mental gymnastics showed her that similar principles applied to the list of materials she 'owned'.

"Ok, let do this!" She cheered herself on, as she tried to deal with the mess she found herself in.

Omake 1 - Fey Delights
Okay, missed that prompt. Hmmm... Hope you don't mind me snagging most of your idea @Umi-san for my attempt at something that fits the prompt.

Note: The following is definitely a case of 'Unreliable Author' as I tried to write it as if written by an in-universe Author. And we don't know exactly how knowledgeable the author was, or if there were flaws in the information he read to put this together.

Aka, I'm not the QM here, so don't expect what results in-universe to exactly match what's in here.

Fey Delights
Known Sub-species include: Blossom of Pleasure, Mead-flower, Nectar of Wine, Moonshine's Beauty, Haze of Cider, Pulque's Blessing, Sake-leaf and Ale's Thorn

Fey Delights take the form of a mass of constantly flowering thorned vines either winding around each other until they have the form of a small humanoid or wrapped around another plant or structure. Scholars are still unsure whether they are best described as a plant-aspected species of lesser Fey, or a species of plant that has taken on many of the traits of a lesser Fey. Other scholars argue that the two are basically the same, so just call them a Fey Plant already!

This confusion is due to the artificial origin of the Fey Delight. Namely at the 946th (Usually) Annual Wizard's Moot, after a presentation on (relatively) breakthrough research of a species of lesser Fey closely related to Pixies and Dryads, a conflict occurred between several groups of Wizards over whether drugs or alcoholic beverages, and also over which alcoholic beverage in specific, were the better form of intoxicating pleasure. Said argument escalated as most Wizardly arguments do and at some point over the rest of the day the lesser Fey specimens brought for the presentation, the plants from which either alcohols or intoxicating drugs are extracted and significant amounts of magic became involved.

The result was that when they came to their senses (as much as Wizards ever do anyway) the next morning, they discovered that the presentation hall was completely infested with thorned vines covered in flowers of many different shapes and colours. They then attempted to purge the flowering plants which started to emit massive clouds of pollen, uproot themselves and either run away from the Wizards, or towards them to entangle the wizards in their vines. It is most unfortunate that this all meant that though the surrounding area was purged of all plant life over the next few days, the affects of the various Fey Delights on the Wizards had allowed at least a few to escape into the wider world, where they've been a constant problem ever since.

This is due to the fact that the Fey Delight, no matter it's sub-species, produce pollen, nectar and poison from their small but sharp thorns that closely simulate the effects and taste of an intoxicating substance, whether it be wine, opium, marijuana smoke, mead or something more exotic, with many affected saying that it is superior to the original substance. The problem lies in that said pollen, nectar and poison are much more potent and affect the mortal body much more easily, such that an unprotected mortal who lacks an innate ability to resist poison spending mere moments in the haze of pollen that the Fey Delight emits when threatened is equivalent to having consumed enough of the mimicked intoxicant to be thoroughly affected, a small glass of their nectar making one feel severely affected and being stabbed by the thorns rapidly inducing a state of unconsciousness.

It is fortunate then that as a Fey Delight gets older, it becomes more and more inclined to remain in it's stationary form unless it needs to relocate. A further piece of good news is that the younger, more active Fey Delights have a noticeably weaker intoxicating effect, such that it may take three or ever four times as long to have the same level of effect as a mature specimen, though research is currently being conducted as to whether or not this is due to the plant itself absorbing and being affected by it's pollen, nectar and poisons. As young specimens are frequently observed when walking around, or waving their vines in their stationary form, to appear to be acting similar to a mortal who is either thoroughly drunk or high on a drug.

Having said all that, two further pieces of information remain. The first is that several noble families make fortunes due to careful cultivation and harvesting of the pollen, nectar and poison for sale as drinks. This is due to the previously-mentioned observation that many believe said substances to be 'superior' in effect and taste to their mimicked substance. They also have been found to have no long-term effects unlike the original substances, except for being just as addictive. Provided that is, that the pollen, nectar or poison weren't obtained from a mutant variant as some have been discovered to either retain said negative effects or possess worse.

The second piece of information is that rumours continue to spread that there exists variants of this species that mimic the heavenly substances known as True Nectar and Ambrosia. If these rumours prove to be true, such a plant would be a cause for many wars as nations fight over access to them, and religious orders attempt to eradicate them by orders of their deities... or to spread the delights involved. Depends on the deity in question really. Either way, whoever possesses such a variant has the key to endless wealth, or great disaster.

----------------
@yannoshka This work and any better? ... Anything in it that I need to fix? If we get any, I see them being either 'Young' or 'Seedling' versions, to represent that they're the youngest and weakest version of the plant.

Also? Holy shit, that became a lot more than I thought it would be when I started...

Aaand, I'm back. I'm so, so sorry for the delay. I'd like to say that it was RL or something, but nope. With the exception of three-day-flu at the very beginning of it, the delay was mostly caused by my laziness and an inordinate amount of time playing Xcom EU, Xcom2 WotC & Civ VI. And the char sheet was an even greater bitch to craft than the tables - what was I even thinking? - But, well, I think it has turned out quite nifty, so I hope you folks will like it.
To make it up to you, I threw in some nice stuff for your perusal.

Moving the core to the bottom of the well was a no-brainer. As far as Emily could determine, that was the single safest location in her domain. It was as far from the surface as she could get, rather inaccessible, and the darkness and water should hide the core quite nicely.
The system, or whatever the thing controlling the windows seemed to agree for, the moment she exacted her core transferal, she was once again bombarded by tables.
You have moved your core -5Mp, -5 Will

The total removal of the dangerous, time-limited clause from the problem notification made her sag in abject relief. It took up so much of her attention, as a matter of fact, that she had not even paid any attention to the white tables, beyond acknowledging them out of her way.
And thus all unknowingly accepting the prompt for additional modifiers.
It is said, not without some merit, that fortune especially favors the foolish.

That brought her euphoria down to a screeching halt.
"Wha? Wait.. huh? Grgh! Bwuh... Bah!" She spluttered incoherently for a few long minutes at the new development, that hammered in, with the metaphorical equivalent of industrial grade sledgehammer, just how far out of her depth she found herself in.

And once again she cursed her lack of a nice calming draw from her bong. Life was ever so much easier to deal with when she was running a high.

After finally restoring her equilibrium somewhat, she gave one last huff and affirmed her earlier decision to just concentrate on the pressing problems, and deal with all the rest a best she could.
But even there she immediately hit a snag. Namely, she had already fixed the sole pressing problem that had an immediate, obvious solution.

'Well-p, where there are no immediate solutions' she reasoned with herself, 'expansion of the knowledge base might just present some new ones to me.' she mused eying her remaining 90 Willpower speculatively.

It took her a surprising amount of time to analyze and absorb the knowledge about her skills and available materials, for all that the actual usable results were rather sparse.
all the unlocked info is on the character sheet. I didn't want to bother with copying it over here, but if you people don't like that just tell me, and I'll fix it

As she got down to 15 Willpower, and an early evening settled around, a sudden, strong gust of wind howled down from somewhere outside her domain and hit her fort...
...Or was it that the wind hit herself? since she WAS the fort?

'A doobie! A doobie! My kingdom for a single joint!' she cried to herself as her meta-musings gave her another meta-headache

But, the wind presented another problem to her. A rather prominent one, even if no message screen informed her of it.
Namely, while she was aware of anything and everything within her domain, everything beyond her ditch was a total, absolute, unknowable, impenetrable mystery to her.
It was as if there was a.. a... A veil, or maybe a thick curtain, of some sort bordering her edges that blockaded all her senses.
Her confusion was just starting to turn into fear when something akin to a thorny bush flew windborne out of the oblivion belt, hit her eastern wall, flipped over it to finally land and still in its lee side. And then started wriggling until the bush resolved into four small, thorny ambulatory plant-things. If one squinted they might even consider them vaguely of hominid shape, what with having two longish, thicker primary root stems, two long thorny limbs about two third of the way up the stem, and leaves and flowers only sprouting at the very top, somewhat reminiscent of a head.
More importantly, with the arrival of the creatures, four more white screen prompts came.

Fay Delight entered your domain.
It is placid.
Do you want to try to claim it as your minion?

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Due to finding your nature supplementary to its own, you can claim it without a fee

"Well now... I do need some minions, according to the warning notifications, and apparently these little plant dudes..."
'well, not really dudes seeing as their flowers had both the staminates and carpellates, her inner botany geek fussily corrected.'
'Ach, who cares, it was doubtful that the things... Fay Delights was it?' yes, a quick check confirmed that that was their name, even if the slightly larger, thornier one was apparently of a Thornrosé variety, whatever that meant... 'Anyway, it was doubtful that these Fay Delights were all that concerned over proper, politically correct terminology, so dudes they were...'
"Dammit Emilly, stay focused!" she berated herself crossly as she went on another - well her first one since she became fort - tangent bender.
"The point is, I need minions, and these dudes apparently come for free. It's a win-win!" she cheered herself and blithely accepted all four prompts.

And then her awareness absolutely exploded, and she lost consciousness due to information overload before even the first of the new slew of notifications could appear.

Regaining consciousness was a slow and laborious process. Mostly because a) Emily had never been what one might consider an early riser - which had only been reinforced over the last dozen years or so, by her rather specific lifestyle; b) Emily was hoping against hope that the whole fortress thing HAD been nothing more than a result of... well not exactly a bad trip, but a weird one for certain; and c) that sensory overload that had sent her to la-la land? yeah, she was still suffering having the area her awareness covered effectively increased by something around a factor of ten. Nine for sure... Ok, it was probably closer to eight...

Having grudgingly dealt with factors a) & b), she found to her delight that while, yes her awareness now did stretch a few kilometers in every direction away from her domain, the details gleaned were much, much sparser when compare to the absolute cognizance she enjoyed over her own turf. And, the farther her 'sight' extended from her ditches, the fuzzier the info she received was.

Going quickly over the notifications that she received, this time she nonetheless made every effort to pay attention to each and every one of them, no matter how banal they might be.
The first four were individual confirmation for every one of her minions being minionized, than the two problem resolutions informing her that her health regeneration was back to 100% and her mana generation was unlocked, a purplish-blue screen informing her that with minions she gained the ability to detect lands outside her domain, than two more white screens informing her that two red chestnuts had apparently sprouted, a brief warning that a flock of pheasants was approaching her domain, another that they had entered it and a final one that informed her that they left it having stayed for a total of 1.3 seconds.
After those came the screen informing her that she had entered into a new day, followed by ones that informed her that she had regenerated 100 Hp, and that she had generated a whooping 12 Mp. But it was the final one that held most of her attention.

Your Willpower has been refilled!
5 Will detected banked in your core.
5 Will added to your daily pool.
That was interesting. Moreover it was very interesting, though she was as of yet uncertain as if how useful that particular discovery might be.

But, well, she figured she was bound to have plenty of time to get to the bottom of that, and myriad other mysteries she was bound to encounter.
Right now, she had to concentrate on day to day matters.
