In the year 2010, The zombie apocalypse began. Not quite as described in fiction, this virus was airborne, and infected Everyone, activating upon death. But as lncredable as it seemed, it happened. You are a survivor, one of the few thousand human beings still alive on the planet Earth. This is the story of how you struggled to survive in this new world, where the dead rule, but you learn to Fear the Living.

AN: Alright. Just letting everyone know, so far this is spur of the moment, and all I have are vague ideas of where it could go, but this initial stage really decides your situation and resources. For example, starting later means lower chance of encounters with the living, but also lower chances of food, water and ammo to keep you alive. So, off we go!

So, since we had a tie in ages, I'm going to vote myself, and I vote 16.
So, let's get onto it.

You ran, sprinting through the trees. A low, distant groaning of the dead coming from all sides. You turn your head, looking behind to see if anyone is chasing you. Thankfully, it seems not. You sigh in relief, knowing if they were following you, you would have heard them by now.
Suddenly, a loud crack rings out as your foot steps on a rotten branch. You stop and freeze in place, listening intently for any sign the dead heard it. After a minute, the distant groans don't seem to be getting any louder. Once again you praise your good luck, and start walking off, making sure to actually look where you are stepping this time.
The forest is silent, as most places are these days. Animals hide from the dead in their holes, even the birds are reluctant to leave their nests. You shake the thoughts from your head as you hear the crackling sound of running water. Making your way over to it, you soon find a small brook running through the undergrowth. You kneel down and take a few sips from the stream, then stop to look at your reflection.

You hardly recognise yourself. It's been, what, a few months since the dead started eating people? You thought it'd take more time for everything to go to shit. Your parents; Dead, little sister; Dead, Your best friend, the one you have been surviving with for the past few months?.... Dead. All thanks to those fuckers back there. You swear! You'll get your revenge! You swear it on your name!

You sigh, taking once last glance at yourself in the water. Never as much as in the last few months have you praised your decision to wear long baggy pants and jumpers. It's saved your life from a bite more than once. You pull off your beanie and run your hand through your black hair, cringing at the oiliness of it. That's what happens when you don't take a shower for months on end. Good thing it's short, only down to your shoulders.
"C'mon Salem. Keep moving." You mutter to yourself, shaking your head. You stand up from beside the stream and look around. You notice some moving forms on the edge of your vision. Most likely the dead. Resolving to get away from them as fast as possible, you keep moving away from the camp those assholes set up. You make sure that your booted feet don't step on any more branches, and try to stay quiet.

Success
After a while of walking you stop, hearing a scream ring out through the forest. It's male, and coming from your right if your ears work properly (which they do). Looks like you have a decision on your hands.
[][ACTION] You have no supplies and no ammo. Your last human contact didn't go so well, though this time you're sure it will end better!
Chance of Success: 40%
[][ACTION] You really should just keep moving. After last time; you don't want to go out of your way to find people. That seems like a baaaad idea.
Chance of Success: 70%
This decision made, you move off carefully, hiding stock still behind trees when you see one of the dead walking towards the scream. It looks like it used to be a woman, scraggly bits of hair attach to an almost bald head, pale and milky eyes look out to the world almost blindly, and one of her arms seems to have either been cut or fallen off. You look upon her rotting face and you feel... something.
[][FEEL] Anger. These things have taken your friends, family, your whole life! You wil kill them all!
[][FEEL] Sadness. These poor people don't know what they're doing. It's the virus that's purporting them that killed your loved ones. It's to blame.
[][FEEL] Apathy. You don't really care about them. They're dead, you're alive. They will try to kill you, you kill them in return.
[][FEEL] Fear. You never managed to get over your initial fear of these things, and whenever you see one your flight instinct kicks in, either having you sprint away as fast as possible, or freeze in place.

AN: A cookie for the people who can guess where we are, and a 10% bonus to any action for the first one. Both options have benefits, and the easier action is not always the best. Though, I will say that a fail on either action will get you an encounter with the living or dead, and a success is a friendly encounter, with greater success = better encounter.

Other Characters
Living
Lee: Seems to be one of the three leaders of this group. He is a tallish black man wearing a purple shirt, white undershirt, and grey pants. He seems to be able to make the hard decisions, as shown by him cutting off the leg of the teacher, David Parker.
Kenny: Quick to violence and with a foul word every other sentence, Salem doesn't know much about Kenny, other than the fact his wife is Katja.
Katja: A kind woman who has some experience in the medical industry, she worked with Salem to save David Parker, but their patient sadly died of blood loss.
Lily: Seems to be the self-appointed leader of the group, and is in charge of handing out the food rations. As a result, not many in the group are fond of her. Her dad Is Larry.
Larry: He is extremely confrontational and quick to violence, no good for a guy with a heart condition. He seems to back up his daughter Lilly in everything. He had his legs cut off by the St Johns, and is currently Bleeding out.
Mark: Mark is an unknown. He asked for Salem's help in he forest, but she doesn't know much more about him. He tried to help when David resurrected and attacked Salem.
Ben Paul: One of the two high school kids Salem met in the woods. His original group was devastated by tragedy, and was recently attacked by the same group who attacked Salem and killed her best friend. He and Travis revealed to the group that you come back no matter how you die.
Travis McCarthy: The other high school kid Salem met, he described the tragedy of his original group. His dad was special forces, but it is unknown if he passed on any skills to his son.
Clementine: A young girl, she seems to be holding up well in these dark times. She has a certain resilience that you think will keep her alive.
Kenny Jr (Duck): A young boy who seems to not let the apocalypse get to him. He is always happy and laughing. Got his nickname from the phrase "Like water off a duck's back"
Carly: A woman who is handy with that pistol and has good instincts. If she hadn't noticed the two St John brothers walking under the highway, who knows what would have happened.
Andy St John: The taller of the two men who are offering to trade food for gas. He is very eager to get the group to the dairy. A cannibal who eats people. Sick fuck.
Danny St John: The shorter of the two men who are offering to trade food for gas. He is very eager to get the group to the Dairy. A cannibal who eats people. Sick fuck.
Brenda St John: The mother of Danny and Andy. She is also a Cannibal. Sick woman.
Dead
David Parker: One of the teachers of Ben and Travis' school. He died of blood loss after losing a leg.

[6][ACTION]You have no supplies and no ammo. Your last human contact didn't go so well, though this time you're sure it will end better!
[4][FEEL] Wariness. The best zombie is a dead zombie, but one wrong move, one unlucky break, could spell the end for you or anyone, so you'll watch carefully and stay prepared; after all, if the everpresent threat of being devoured by or turned into one of the undead can't inspire the will to fight to live, then what will?
--------------
You take a deep breath, you can't wait for the dead woman to move on. You have no weapons, so you're not going to risk attacking it, and it seems to be going in the same direction, so it looks like you're going to have to outrun it. Easy enough, you smirk to yourself. They can't even jog.
So, with one last steaming breath, you burst out from behind the tree and sprint forwards, towards the scream. Who cares if they want to hurt you. They're people. Not many of those left. And hey, maybe you'll get lucky and they'll be nice people? Who knows, but you need some good luck balance out then bad stuff from earlier.
You were hanging out with your friend, Amy, in your camp. Not a big place, just a small temporary shelter for the night, before you moved on. You were laughing together and roasting some marshmallows you found in the back corner of a grocery story back at the last town. Of course, this meant you weren't paying attention to your surroundings.
It all happened so fast.. one second you were loosing your shit over the name of Amy's crush back at school, the next she was lying face down in the ground, a bullet hole in her head. After that... it's all a blur, filled with tears and anger. All you remember is running through the forest all night, and most of the morning.
But you can't think of that right now. You need to be strong. For Amy. This break from memory lane comes just in time, as you soon find yourself approaching a clearing.

In this clearing is a group of guys. Two look like college kids, unarmed, wearing matching school jumpers. Two older guys with rifles are searching the tree line, one wearing a cap with a handlebar moustache, the other wearing camo pants and military boots. The last two guys are a black man in a bluish shirt looking over the leg of the fourth man, which seems to be caught in a bear trap. Ouch. You wince in sympathy for the guy.
They aren't being quiet, and you're close enough to hear their conversation.
"Hurry up Lee! Get his Leg out of that thing before the walkers show up!" Moustache shouted.
"It's got no release latch," Military, " You're gonna have to find another way to get him out."
"Please! Help our teacher!" The gangly college kid.
"Ben shut up!" The other college kid. "I can handle this!"
Looks like two groups. The kids and their teacher, and the three guys. The guys are willing to stop and help this group, so it looks like they're nice enough. But they aren't being quiet, and they're gonna bring the dead down on them, if all the walkers you sprinted by are any indication.
Taking a deep breath, you walk out from behind the tree and start slowly, and calming walking towards them. Military spots you soon enough, and points the gun in your direction. "Hey! Stop right there! Put your hands up!" With no reason not to do so, you slowly raise your hands, and speak.
"You guys want to be quieter? The Dead are all coming this way, and I don't think we want to be around when they do." You manage to keep your voice steady, which you silently congratulate yourself for.
"Thanks for the late fucking warning, kid." Moustache said, looking behind her. "We got company, Walkers!"
"Fuck," Military swore, "Look kid, I don't trust you, but it doesn't look like you have anything on you. Just get behind us, help Lee over there or keep these kids calm. I don't know, just get behind us!"
And so, with tentative contact and incoming dead, what are you gonna do.
