Fanfiction.net is down again

Can't reach it for couple of days now. Heard that domain name has expired which is a rather tragic and funny both I think.

Considering site seem to have troubles every couple years according to older threads we can say FFN is rather unhealty. So who is keeping archives?

Also does anybody thinks we should have alternatives that is not AO3 which has a tag system that threthens to give me cancer everytime I look at it? How hard would it be to create a clone of the site? And no I don't mean the content but the site itself for the people to migrate to if they want to same way SV did from SB.

Edit: fiction.live might be an option altought that site is for quests mostly.

Gonna suck if the site really is gone.

Most of the fanfics I read are cross posted here and/or on SB. The Buffy the Vampire Slayer crossover site Twisting The Hellmouth is also has a ton of stuff, and still sees a respectable number of updates. AO3 isn't bad but for some reason I've been more hit or miss on that one.

There's quite a few stories on FF.net that I haven't been able to locate anywhere else though, and at least one story that I can remember that has 20+ chapters on FF.net, while it's got 5 posted on TTH.

If that site goes down and can't be brought back, would there be anyway to put a banner or notice up for various authors that crosspost stuff here? Help make sure some good stories aren't permanently lost, maybe offer some authors now without a place to post a new home.

I've seen that it's a DNS issue, not a domain one. A workaround can be found here: How to Access FanFiction.net During the Ongoing Outage - Techbreeze IT Solutions
That worked for me. Thx.

It still exist thankfully and owners seem to be working on bringing it back. DNS fix above me worked forexample.

Also there is a number of people that keep copies of the stories they like but there is more than a million stoires in the site and if it ever goes down vast majority of it will dissapear. I suggest downloading your own favorites to an offline drive just in case. There are tools for those around the net tough I have not used one since host moved to Cloudflare.

Problem is a search shows me that every 2 years or so site does go down or has a serious issue and it makes me think that the site is limping along more than anthing else.

I would love if we were to create an alternative/clone so SV/SB and its other siblings can use it isntead of reliying on an aging site without working moderation or administration.

How hard could it be to create a clone?

One issue I've seen, which has actually seen some authors leave FF.net, or quit writing entirely, at one point there did seem to be a few sites that did seem like a clone of FF.net. The authors where not happy that their stuff was posted without their permissions, and as it was a copy of the site, I think many of them didn't even have access to their own stuff.

Aside from copying a favorite story to your phone or personal computer, honestly it would just be easier to encourage authors to crosspost elsewhere.

Not what I want to do!. I want to create a site people can use. No copying over unless Author asks same way we copied our post from SB to SV when the forum first went up.

Then just make it known that there is an alternate place they can post their stories so people knows about it if FFN ever goes down permenantly.

Well that's really what AO3 is for. Like one of its defining purposes, apart from just being The main repository for fan works as a whole, the Organisation for Transformational Works has promised for years that they have the whole site backed up continuously in case lawsuits/government ever try to shut it down.

There's other fanfiction sites, too, some dedicated(-ish, ala mediaminer, though it's not exactly active these days), some less so (royal road allows for it). Like, if all you want is some other relatively stable place to post fanfiction, you got options.

You might not have, like, an audience if it's not Ao3 or something similarly sized (which is why things have largely consolidated around that and ff.n in the english speaking fanfiction ecosystem, heh), but do you have options.

But yeah, ff.n's been hiccuping every year or three for, uh, I think as long as it's existed? I'm less certain that's a sign it's dying and not just a "websites aren't eternally stable" kind of deal. Most places seem to go down occasionally for a bit, really...

@FictionPress

http://FanFiction.Net is serving millions of active readers/authors world-wide and a fictional site hosting stories and poetry. We have a very strict policy on sexual content and sexual content related to child abuse. On July 12th,
@GoDaddy
deactivated dns-resolution for our domain due to a dozen links of fictional content they deemed broke their "ChildAbuse" policy. Godaddy sent the dozen links to us on July 9th.

Our human staff between July 10th 6PM-10PM PST time validated every link and removed the content that broke our policies regarding sexual abuse content. The list even contained a link that contained no sexual abuse of any kind. That why we human verify every abuse report. We officially replied to Godaddy on July 12th even though content was removed on July 10th.

Yet on July 12th, our http://FanFiction.Net domain was disconnected from the dns eco-system, with zero notification/communication, causing 100% operational disconnection including email, website, app login, etc.

Our staff called in to Godaddy on July 12th and was assured 24 hour reply. It has been more than 24 hours and we are still getting no response.
@Godaddy
, please expediate the review process so we can get dns back again. Again, we received zero communication on the dns deactivation and our communication is limited to childabuse@godaddy.com email which we have replied to on July 12th, and July 13th via multiple emails.

To our users, please be patient as we work hard to get this resolved but as detailed above, this is entirely out of our control at the moment.

If you personally know anyone at
@Godaddy
, please help us and let them know to expediate this matter and establish bi-directional contact with us.

It's been up for the past hour now, as of this post. No idea if that means it's been restored or if this is just another temporary blip. 🤞

Boy I sure wished they get email notifs to work again because I'm damn sure no one's reading my stuff because of it.

Yes, it was down for a two days, but it's up now.

I do plan to move my stuff to AO3, though it's messaging system is vastly inferior, it has other advantages.
