It is 1980, and the world teeters over a chasm that is the Third World War. The Soviet Union has invaded Afghanistan, and the US scrambles to respond as domino after domino falls to the enemy of capitalism.
However, something is about to happen that will, however momentarily, remove the two powers from the public eye.
In South Africa, in a small village named Udana, oil is discovered. While not immediately remarkable, a week later, two more oil deposits are discovered, and a diamond vein. Just 3 days afterwards, a trio of deposits, and a handful of smaller diamond veins. Then a gold vein. Then a massive vein of Iron and other metals. Another oil deposit.
Like a wave the discoveries spread up the length of Africa, appearing one at a time or in groups, growing up past Egypt and finally grinding to a halt in the Middle East. The world is stunned, and none more than Africa itself as it slowly realizes that it is now the most resource-rich continent in the world. Even the Soviet Union, who already had soldiers stationed Afghanistan, is slow to utilize them to any effect, so fast came the discoveries.
And where the great powers did not act, the people did.
Western companies raced to grab whatever plots they could, in a modern gold rush. This alone triggered acts of violence all across the area, as angry natives fought to expel these western invaders. In response, western companies began hiring a multitude of PMC's to protect their holdings. This initiated the arrival of even more PMC's hoping for work if any kind in the violence-rich region. With them came arms dealers by the thousands, ready and waiting to supply the bloody regions with bloody tools of war.
Africa and the Middle East have become a land of plenty, and a land of conflict. It is unknown how long will pass before greater powers become involved. Already the UN is up-gearing its peacekeepers, preparing for the inevitable intervention.
How a PMC is run
PMC's today have little trouble finding manpower, and a companies number of employees is often dictated by the number of arms that company has. While an Average PMC could easily pull in thousands of displaced soldiers and glory seekers, if they don't have enough weapons to arm them, they'll be throwing away money.
For this reason, arms dealers are King in this new age, as they are often the only thing holding back a PMC from success. They hold such sway in fact, that they have created an entirely new currency. The GMC or Global Military Currency. A system custom built and balanced for the dealing of weapons and the hiring of Private Militaries.
That said, while a company may have the funds to purchase a jet, they often lack the facilities to care for or even launch the aircraft. The same applies to naval units, and for this reason many employers will lend their chosen PMC their own equipment, wether commercial or refurbished, decommissioned military hardware. Other entrepreneurs will rent out their own private airfields to visiting companies, for a price.
Much of this is dependent, of course, on a PMC's public image. One who often works for terrorists or drug lords, however good the pay is, may drive away some customers, and attract others, while good Samaritans may find a place is the public light, with companies creating merchandise for them, generating additional income. Both paths have advantages and disadvantages, as does favoring one employer over others.

Apaches and Alligators, please! Hinds are nice, but hellstrikes and anti-stinger capability is just so important. I think I'll go for a helicopter/spec ops focus.
EDIT: Speaking of which, stingers are probably a Good Idea.
Apaches and Alligators, please! Hinds are nice, but hellstrikes and anti-stinger capability is just so important. I think I'll go for a helicopter/spec ops focus.
EDIT: Speaking of which, stingers are probably a Good Idea.
Apaches and Stingers haven't entered active service from the countries that made them yet, and the Alligator is so new that it would probably take a good deal of finagling for an up-and-coming PMC to get one. Remember, it's only 1980.
They will likely be available to purchase from arms dealers as time goes on tho, don't worry!
(All of this according to a quick wiki search, so it may be complete BS)
Sure! In fact, I'll go the extra step and provide an example of both:
-Good trait- Scavengers: due to your troops abilities to care for their own weapons and vehicles, as well as make impromptu repairs, your upkeep cost is reduced by 25% every month
-bad trait- Ramshackle: since your vehicles and armaments show signs of so many repairs, employers and arms dealers may see you as amateurs. This may make deals harder or prices higher.
The two traits don't need to relate as closely as those two do.
CEO Desc: short, stout, muscular, bald big red beard. He wears on his left arm a knight gauntlet and pauldron.
Uniform: dark tan color mixed with green and black in a German camo pattern.
Emblem: iron fist slaming down with cracks where it strikes.
First base: Central Africa Republic
Good trait: hand of iron- good at hitting hard and fast with a simple harassing of supply lines or assaults. hits hard and gets out fast.
Bad trait: Traitors whispers- being know to hit hard people try to make a living by selling information of when the iron fists are about to assault
Chance for plans to be sold to the enemy.

Company Name: Blackthorne Group
CEO Name: Lennart Torstein (Birth Name: Lauri Torni, other alias Larry Thorne)
CEO brief description:
Lauri was a Finnish Army captain who led an infantry company against the Soviet Union in the Finnish Winter and Continuation Wars and moved to the United States after World War II. He fought under three flags: Finnish, German (when he again fought the Soviets in World War II), and American (where he was known as Larry Thorne) when he served in U.S. Army Special Forces in the Vietnam War. With his supposed death near the end of the Vietnam War, he was given a check, a fake ID and a mission by the CIA: Raise hell for international communism.

Band of Brothers
With the varied and disparate members of Blackthorne Group brought together by ideology and shared military service rather than simple money, they have unusual cohesion, squad coordination and morale for a mercenary group. Where others run, they stand, outmaneuver, or calmly fall back, leaving traps every step of the way.
-negative-
Unfortunate Implications
The "disparate groups" mentioned in the company brochure include outright fascists, and even if they weren't they would be hated by the second world for their stated goal of tearing down the Communist Revolution. Poor relations with 2nd world governments, and slightly worse relations with 1st world governments
