Death and a Second Breath
The house is dark. An inchoate sense of foreboding fills him and Kakashi's feet slow to a stop on white sand and smooth, pebbled stone. Winter is nearly over, the sakura trees coat a well-manicured lawn with petals of pale pink. Decorative stones hide pristine snow in deep shadows. Everything is as it should be. Except. The house is dark.
His father had returned home weeks ago, somehow smaller than when he had left, but he had come back and that was all that ever mattered. The house was never dark when he was home. Had he left again? On a mission? Without saying anything? No, it wasn't that. He had heard the whispers when trailing his father to the market one day. Words like traitor, and disgrace, and worse. After that day, his father had done the shopping alone. Some days at least. Other days, his father would lay in bed from sunrise to sunset. Kakashi had learned to recognize those days quickly, days when there wouldn't be anything for dinner. On worse days, darkness would hang like a cloud around the house and Kakashi would know with a bone-deep certainty that he needed to leave.
Even on the worst of the worst days, when screaming and shattered pottery sent him fleeing, the house was never dark. Foreboding settles deep in his stomach, turning to dread and Kakashi tries to force his feet to move. Tries, and fails. He breathes, a choked off, desperate sound, channels chakra, and tells himself that a shinobi is always brave. It doesn't help. Fear claws at the back of his skull, a hot, tingling sensation that flows down into his stomach and back in a nauseating cycle. Kakashi breathes again. Masters himself, masters his fear, masters his dread, and takes a single hesitant step forward. And then another. And another, until soft-soled shoes whisper against polished wood.
The metal doorknob feels cold under his hand as he moves, by instinct more than thought. The front door, dark wood set with the crosshatched symbol of the Hatake, swings open. Uncertainty fades with the smell of blood, with the smell of meat left too long in the sun. Dread rises and a voice screams in the back of his head. After a time he recognizes that voice as his own. His jaws snap shut and he does the bravest, most foolish thing he could ever imagine doing. He steps forward. Pauses briefly to set his shoes in their place and put on slippers and steps forward again.
Blood calls with clarion notes and his feet trace the well-worn path to the deck overlooking a close cut grass and a single maple tree. A memorial to his mother. His head feels stuffed with cotton. It floats alongside his body like a balloon. Numb. He looks down on the sight he had somehow known he would see. After all, the house was never dark with his father there to provide his light.
Dull, dark brown eyes look at the Maple tree where his mother had been buried. Look down at the... Look down at his father. He moves. Small hands wrap around the hilt of a blood-covered blade. He moves again. Stands in the dappled shade cast by that maple and digs with the sword into the cold earth.
Soon, far too soon the hole is finished. Kakashi floats alongside his body as it drags his father's body to its final resting place. White robes, white hair, all stained crimson lie at the bottom of the grave and Kakashi returns to himself.
"Why?" the word whispers out of him, chokes him with despair and his knees bang heavily against the ground as he collapses.
In a thousand iterations, that question is never answered and a young shinobi is left to go forth and make the best this of life that he can. This iteration is different. This time, a shard of infinite potential, cast through time and space, cast beyond Creation itself floats down to gently land on his soul.
A warm hand brushes lank white hair from his eyes, and Kakashi looks up into the Sun. "There is never an answer for sorrow, young one. All that we are is but a light shining against the void."

The words echo as though a pronouncement, echo in Kakashi's ears as though carved into bone-deep into his soul. The Sun nods, four hands clasped together as He studies him. A single hand unfolds and reaches forward, brushing glowing fingertips onto Kakashi's forehead.

[A/N] Welcome to an homage to my favorite anime character and Exalted 3E. We'll stay pretty close to the core rules and mechanics of the game and graft on Jutsu etc. as necessary. Character creation will occur over the next few chapters as you all have a chance to vote on various a mix of general themes and specific abilities.
With regards to the timeline: Kakashi's father died at some indeterminate point while Kakashi was in the Academy when Kakashi was probably between 4 and 5 years old.
With regards to canon: a lot of things will probably change as a result of Kakashi's exaltation so don't rely too much on it. I don't know how much I'll use from the 4th shinobi war, some of it gets a bit silly. On the other hand, that's over twenty years in the future from the point now.

Mastering Jutsu

Fuinjutsu can be learned as techniques as per the rules for learning all other Jutsu. Fuinjutsu may also be learned as components and then combined to create unique effects.

Weakness can be trained away and with the charms dawns can get training people can be fast and easy plus exalted martial arts are op
I think it's called tiger soldier or something either way you can make anyone not an exalt near human max real quick. I think drill sergeant kakashi could be fun lol

I don't think so. I think high level shinobi are in general comparable to younger solar exalt, although I won't rule things out entirely.
Yeah, midnight fits thematically better with specific events (Dawn, Dusk, etc.) than night. The choices are all Solar though.

The dawn rises cold and pale as Kakashi sleeps under thin blankets. Eyes crusted with dried tears and sleep blink open. He sits up, shivers once, and breathes out, a mist of white condensation. Why was it so cold? The thought muddles around his head for a moment until, Oh, it wasn't a dream. His heart clenches and his chest tightens, but his eyes remain dry. He had cried all of his tears last night in front of a four-armed Sun.

His feet slap lightly on cold, polished wood as he stands up, still wearing yesterday's clothes. For a long moment, he simply stands, suddenly unsure and apathetic. Kakashi thinks of his father then. He thinks of the fugue the man would lapse into some mornings when his father couldn't muster the energy to get out of bed. That sad thought sets him moving and he leaves his bedroom. Bare feet slip silently over floors set to sing at the slightest pressure.
Kakashi pauses foot raised in midstep and frowns. He had never been able to avoid tripping that third plank. Curiosity bubbles within him, and his hips twists, and he leaps. His planted foot spinning up in a wheel kick which arcs through the space where an adult's head would be. Completing the wheel kick, he lands, still without sound, and frowns again.

His left foot sweeps out in a low strike, and his whole body twists, bringing his right foot around and up. Two quick open-handed strikes, first to throat and then torso follow and Kakashi flows through the basic kata of the Hatake Taijutsu. Memory flashes with crystalline clarity a memory of his father, limbs flashing through a kata faster than his young eyes could follow. Only, now, in memory, he could. Each move plays in his memory and his feet shift.

Gone were the rigid strikes that characterize the Basic Hatake Taijutsu. Kakashi moves as though water, with the grace of a flowing stream and the force of a waterfall crashing down. He dances with the memory of his father, burning it into searing perfection and feels alive again. The kata finishes with a swinging downward kick, designed to crush the ribcage of a downed foe. Through it all the floorboards remain silent.
Something was different, something had changed. Kakashi knew what the Academy instructors call him, what others call him. Prodigy. He knew the limits of his own abilities. Had known them, at least. Looking inward, he reaches with invisible fingers toward a bonfire raging in his soul and pokes.
Color spills out. Whirling shades of red and yellow and purple illuminate the hallway, and a warmth grows on his forehead. Pushing harder, Light blazes around him, rising in wisps of sunlight off his skin and casting everything around him in brilliant gold. Kakashi grins briefly, sorrow buried under the joyous feelings that burn through his veins. He nearly laughs at a brief, incongruous, thought that floats through his mind. How am I supposed to sneak around with this? Understanding, somewhat distantly, the seductive nature of the power that flowed through him, he pulls back. The comforting warmth of the sun fades from around him and sadness returns, but lessened, muted.
Fully awake now, Kakashi drifts toward the kitchen, hoping there would be food, and fearing there wouldn't. Cabinets open and bang shut, dozens of them, until finally Kakashi admits defeat. Coins jingle faintly in a small leather pouch as he bounces it in his hand. Enough for breakfast? Opening the pouch, he sighs, 10 ryo. Enough to get a steamed bun, but nothing more. Hardly enough for a full day.
As he ponders whether he could make it through the day without eating or trying to hunt down some of the deer that wander throughout the forested areas around Konoha, the seals on the front door chime, announcing a visitor.
