It was a fairly average day in Canterlot High while the Rainbooms were having lunch. Of course average for these girls is relative, as Sunset Shimmer decided to ask a question that had been bothering her for a while. "So...anyone wonder why we are surrounded by reporters because of the Battle of the Bands?"
"Why would we be bothered by them darling?" Rarity asked, not looking up from her phone while she texted.
Sunset blinked. "Because we made a giant alicorn appear in the sky? Heck, why didn't the Fall Formal get any attention?"
"They weren't the strangest thing I've ever seen darling?"
"What could be stranger than that!?"
Rarity finally looked up from her phone. "Sunset dear, why would any of the incident be that strange? It's practically tame compared to championship duels."
"Duels?" Sunset questioned. Rarity pointed to the end of the table where Rainbow Dash and Applejack were playing a card game. "That card game I see you girls play?"
"Of course, what else?"
"...It's just a card game." Sunset said and the entire cafeteria became eerily quiet. Looking up and around the cafeteria Sunset noticed that every individual person, student and teacher, were staring at her incredulously. "What?"
"Just a card game?" Rainbow Dash asked. "Just a CARD GAME!?" Picking Sunset up by her jacket, Dash began to shake the pony-turned-girl. "DUEL MONSTERS IS NOT JUST A GAME! IT IS A WAY OF LIFE!"
"Ms. Dash, I give permission for you and your friends to leave school early...no one can be expected to survive in this world without knowing how to duel." Vice-Principal Luna said, indicating the door. Dash and the Rainbooms, minus sunset, nodded and dragged the girl outside and into Applejack's truck.
Later, after being dragged through multiple shops, Sunset found herself sitting on the steps of a building in a theme park, the steps flanked by dragons. "Okay, what are we doing in a theme park?"
"Sunset, this aint no ordinary theme park." Applejack said. "This here is a Kaibaland Interactive Dueling Park. It's the best place ifn' you want to duel."
"That does not answer my question."
"Oh that's an easy answer!" Pinkie said. "You're going to duel!"
"Wat?"
After many, many card shops
"I really don't know about this." Sunset said as she and her friends walked into the Kaibaland Arena. A few duelists were milling about, reviewing records on boards, trading cards and generally just hanging out. "Do I really have to do this?"
Rainbow Dash put her hand on Sunset's shoulder. "You apparently haven't watched the news ever. Otherwise you would know that the fate of the world relies on this game."
Sunset raised in eyebrow. "The fate of the world? On a children's card game? You're kidding right?"
Pinkie Pie shoved her laptop into Sunset's face. "Read this and be educated!" Sunset took the laptop away from her face and sat down to read. As she scrolled the tabs Pinkie had selected her eyes widened. And widened. And widened.
Looking up over the top of the computer, she stared at the knowing smiles on her friends faces. "...How are you not all dead? This is like Tirek escaping Tartarus! The Age of Chaos returning! This...!" She held up the screen to show a man with tri-colored hair. "This is like something my Teacher went through!"
"We know darling. Honestly we thought this would remind you of home more!" Rarity said as she took Sunset into a hug, the other girls joining them.
Sunset's eyes filled with tears. "Girls..." Just as she was about to hug them back, an explosion and the distinctive sound of Life Points dropping to zero drew their attention to the arena.
"HaHaHa! Nice try loser!" The victor on the red platform shouted as the platforms moved to their resting position. "Now hand over that card you put up and be on your way, I've got other sucker to beat!"
"Hey!" Applejack shouted. "Ante Duels are illegal!"
"Get with the times cowgirl! We had a ref who approved it." The victor pointed his thumb over to man in a Kaibaland uniform.
"The duel was allowed as the card was not of significant value." The official said. "Had the card been worth more than fifty dollars, the duel would not have taken place."
"Yep! Now hand over that E-Hero Stratos kid." The victor said as he walked over to the loser.
"E-Hero Stratos? Wait a second!" Pinkie said as she started typing on her computer. "That card has a value of one hundred dollars at minimum!" She pointed her finger at the winner and the official. "You set that kid up in an illegal duel!"
"Ma'am, if you keep shouting accusations to a Kaibaland official referee, while using an outdated file, you will be banned from the park. Permantly." The man's smile became akin to a shark's.
At that moment the blue platform had raised to it's ready position, the sound drawing the attention of everyone involved. On the platform, Sunset Shimmer stood with a hand in her pocket, nonchalantly reading the rule book. The alert boards in the room came to life. "Zachet Cruise, A challenge has been issued!"
The vicotr of the previous duel looked at the board in shock. "That's me?" Turning his head towards Sunset he shouts "What, you want some rookie?"
Sunset lazily rolled her eyes in his direction. "I put up my Skull Servant for your E-Hero Stratos. Pretty sure that's less than fifty dollars, right ref?"
The official stepped back as if struck. "W-Well y-yes b-but..."
"Oh come off it!" Zachet shoved the official aside. "I ain't playing no rookie for a lame one star card!" Zachet took the E-Hero Stratos from his victim's hands and stomped to the exit.
"Coward." Sunset's voice echoed through the room, through Zachet's very being. He turned back to see Sunset slowly turning the pages of the rule book.
"That's it! You're goin' down!" Zachet said getting onto the red platform. They both drew five cards from their decks.

"Since I am the challenged, I'll start first!" Zachet said drawing a card. He smirked. "Well well well, it's my lucky day again! I summon Axe Dragonute (2100/0) in Attack Mode!" A black, bipedal dragon wielding a giant axe appeared on the field. "Next I play two cards face down on the field. That ends my turn." Two of the squares behind the monster turn yellow.
"Right, ...my turn." Sunset reaches for her deck. 'The hell am I doing?' She drew a card and looked at her hand. Making a decision she selected one of her cards. "I summon a monster a defense mode!" A horizontal card back appeared on the field. "That's all for now.."
"What? You playing defensive? You really are a rookie." Zachet said drawing another card. "I attack with my Dragonute! Take out her pitiful defense!" The dragon struck the card and destroyed, before falling back to it's side of the field and falling to it's knees. "Because he attacked, he has to go into defense mode. But I'll give him some backup!" Zachet said pulling a card from his hand, but was stunned when he saw the card fragments hadn't vanished. "Wha?" The fragments of Sunset's monster reformed into two flying squirrels, and her life points rose.
SS: 5000 ZC: 4000
"You destroyed my Nimble Momonga (1000/100). When it's destroyed in battle, I gain one thousand life points and I can summon two more of them if they are in my deck, provided I shuffle it after." Sunset picked up her deck and started to shuffle it. "Now, you were saying?" She smirked a bit, enjoying the thought of pulling one over someone.
"Don't get cocky rookie! I summon Shield Dragonute (0/3000) in Defense Mode!" A blue, bipedal dragon kneeled with a large shield designed like dragon wings. "As long as there is a monster with Dragonute in it's name on the field, he takes the attack meant for them! however if he is alone on the field or in attack mode, he is immediately destroyed." Zachet smiled cruelly. "Even if you can get a high enough monster to destroy Axe Dragonute, his partner makes him invincible! Your turn."
'Okay, focus Sunset. What do you have?' Looking at her hand, Sunset could not find anything that could help her. Sighing she drew a card and picked two from her hand "I place two cards face down. And summon Skull Servant (300/200) in defense mode. That ends my turn."
"Wow, you really have no idea do you?" Zachet said before he started laughing. "Hahahahahaha! All that cool when you challenged me and you don't even stand a chance! I summon Lancer Dragonute (1500/1800) in attack mode!" A green bipedal dragon wielding a halberd appeared on the field. "And now I activate my face down card!" A trap card bearing a massive armored being looming over the viewer from a throne rises. "Emperor's Decree prevents the activation of any monster's Effect for as long as it's on the field! Next I chain a card!" Another trap card rose from Zachet's back row, bearing a kneeling woman before a throne. "Plea of the Empress allows all monster's on my side of the field to retain their effects, as long as I discard one card from the game every two turns." Zachet raised his arm and thrust it forward. "My Axe Dragonute returns to attack mode and I use him and Lancer Dragonute to destroy your monsters!" The Lancer Dragonute strikes first, destroying one of the Nimble Momongas. "And since my Lancer attacked a monster in attack mode, his Effect allows him to deal the difference to you in damage!"
SS: 3600 ZC: 4000
"Next my Axe attacks, destroying your other Nimble Momonga!" The axe cleaved through the squirrel with a terrifying scream. "I don't think you'll be using them as defense anymore. I play a card face down and end my turn." 'What am I going to do?' Sunset thought to herself as she drew a card from her deck. "I place two cards face down and end my turn." Zachet drew a card and Sunset activated one of her cards. "I activate Emperor's Holiday!" A trap card depicting a king in his underwear walking down a street rises. "This card prevents you from attacking this turn!"
Zachet stepped back in shock, but then a smirk appeared on his face. "Not bad rookie. But not good enough. I summon Mage Dragonute (500/500) in defense mode!" A yellow, bipedal dragon holding a book and using it's wings as a cloak sat on the field. "As long as he is on the field with one other monster with Dragonute, I gain five hundred Life Points."
SS: 3600 ZC: 4500
"And even though I can't attack this turn, doesn't mean I don't have a surprise for you! I summon Knight Dragonute (2800/2000)!" A red, bipedal dragon with a large sword descended from the sky. It's sword looked like an eastern dragon head breathing fire.
"What? But you already summoned this turn!"
Zachet chuckled. "Yes, but Knight Dragonute is a special summon. He can only be summoned as long as the other Dragonute Warriors are on the field, and is destroyed when one of them is." Zachet's smile became maniacal as the Knight Dragonute pointed it's sword at Sunset. "I discard one card for Plea, and end my turn. It's been fun, but next turn you lose!"
'I'm done for! I was fool for challenging him! I can't do this!' Sunset closed her eyes in pain and slowly reached her hand to the top of her deck.
"Sunset!" "Don't give up darling!" "Keep fightin' till the end!" "We believe in you!" "Come on Sunset, get him good before you lose!"
Sunset looked up and turned towards the audience, seeing her friends cheering for her. She smiled at their support.'Okay, if I'm going down, I'm going down swinging!'"My turn, I draw!" Sunset looked at her hand and smiled. "I activate Giant Trunade, sending all of our Spell and Trap cards back into our hands!" She raised one of the cards in her hand. "Next I sacrifice my Skull Servant to summon Divine Knight Ishzark (2300/1800) in attack mode!" A knight clothed in angelic armor, wielding a giant sword rose from the ground. "Now I activate three spell cards and place one card down! Divine Sword - Phoenix Blade increases my Knight's attack by 300!"
DKI: 2300 ->2600
"Next I equip my Knight with Dark Pendant, further increasing his attack power by 500!"
DKI: 2600->3100
"Next I activate Severing Strike! This spell allows me to deal piercing damage for one turn!" Sunset pointed to the Shield Dragonute. "I attack your Shield Dragonute!" Ishzark leapt forward and slashed through the monster, creating a wormhole that sucked it away. "When Ishzark destroys a monster in battle, it is Banished!"
SS: 3600 ZC: 4400
"And since I destroyed one of your Dragonute's, Knight Dragonute is destroyed as well!" Sunset said and the red dragon warrior seized up like it was having a heart attack , then broke into pieces.
"What!? How did you do that!?" Zachet demanded.
"Read the rules, simple as that." Sunset responded smiling.
"Yeah...well...It ain't gonna happen again!" Zachet said. "I dr-"
"Did I say it was your turn?" Sunset questioned with a smirk on her face. "Since I declared an attack, my Duel Strike activates! This card allows me to declare a second attack with the monster I just used." Sunset made a show of tapping her chin, then pointed at Mage Dragonute. "I target Mage Dragonute with my second attack!" Ishzark destroys and banishes the dragon. "And thanks to Severing Strike, you lose the difference between their points!"
SS: 3600 ZC: 1800
Zachet held himself over his play area, gripping the sides of the platform and panting. His pupils had shrunk and he looked as though he had been through a painful ordeal. "W-What are you?" He asked Sunset, who merely shrugged.
"I'm just rookie remember? Luck of the draw I guess."
"No rookie could pull that off so easily! I'm done, I aint being hustled!" Zachet said grabbing his deck and deactivating the duel in a surrender. He headed out of the arena until he was stopped by Applejack.
"A surrender is a loss, ya know?" She said with her hand held out. Zachet hesitated but eventually put E-Hero Stratos in her hand. Rarity stopped the official who had been trying to sneak away, having called security and informed them of what he had done.
Sunset came off her platform and took the card from Applejack. She walked over to Zachet's victim and gave him the card back. Then she was besieged by hugs from her friends, congratulating her on her first real duel and win.
Dear Princess Twilight, It turns out that our friends were so accepting of the truth about us because it's not uncommon here. They have this thing called Duel Monsters, a trading card game for kids that's treated as possibly the international sport. Almost all of the advances in science they've had for a while seems to come from the game. Apparently stuff like me and the Dazzlings are regular occurrences here. The game's pretty silly, but pretty exciting too. I think I might keep playing, even though Pinkie has been researching mythology for some reason. She says 'we need to be prepared'. I'll never understand that girl. Talk to you soon. Your friend, Sunset Shimmer
I know it moved to quickly and is nowhere near ready for posting beyond the forum format. This thread exists so that peopl can help me smooth it out, add reactions from onlookers, make cards/scenarios, and maybe help it not be a surrender but an actual victory.
