"I want to star in a movie!"
"My favorite superheroes are The Legionnaires!"
"I wanted to be a singer with Mianna on a live stage!"
"My favorite cartoon.. I always wanted to be in it"
"Can I have my dad back?"
Those were some examples of Wishes that children give at the Grant-A-Wish Children's Charity. Some requests are for their favorite actor or to star in their favorite TV show, small and innocent wishes, easy to grant with the money from the volunteers. When they started out as a small-time organization built on an equally small but generous idea, there weren't many who came to help for the cause as they didn't even have a base of operations yet, just a small apartment crowded with children and medical supplies. Some parents didn't want their child to spend their possible last living moments in such place, others were willing to give it a try.
Donations started out small, often by the sympathetic passersby or those who had nothing to lose. People started filling in. They didn't have enough money to grant some of the Wishes. People started to get disappointed, asking for refunds, saying they weren't using the money on the children, they were stealing, that they should leave it to the big leagues.
But the children never gave up on them.
They had hope that their wish would be granted and so the Genie, affectionately given such a name by the children, also had hope and kept working as hard as they could.
They started to advertise, first with posters on the street, then to the parents to spread by word-of-mouth, however that didn't seem to be enough. But they held on hope.
The scandal started when the first child passed without their Wish being granted.
The parents knew they did as much as they could and kept quiet about it but word slipped out anyways and spread like wildfire. They bitterly thought to themselves how the opposite happened when they tried to spread. Accusations arose. Those corruption and theft rumors were fanned, popular opinion plummeted, parents took their children back. Some didn't want to leave. Things seemed bleak. The Genie's teeth gritted at the hypocrisy.
But the children that were left never gave up on them
"It's okay" they said "Everyone makes mistakes"
And so they endured and kept going, scraping as much money as they could from donations and their own jobs. Until they were able to buy a moderately-sized hospital.
The improvement didn't mean much for those who jeered but it helped lift their reputation, if slightly. Children now had their own rooms, they had enough staff to keep things going and despite all the rubble, got themselves a manager. Things were going relatively well but the failed Wishes were slowly piling up. Sometimes celebrities denied audiences and the Genie had to improvise, other times there were complications in the superhero's schedule, other times there wasn't enough money.
But the Genie had to keep going, for the children.
The world was in for a surprise when the charity was visited by one of the A Ranked Capes, Drakestorme. Their first Cape wish, granted. Little Mabel was so happy she was stuttering. They both did the Stormy Punch together and children wanted to leave their beds to see. The Cape managed to make time for as many children as he could and told them to keep believing in him, other Capes and the staff to keep them safe.
"Because people like them are the real heroes"
Genie found a check for 2 billion among the donations. The children laughed that day. The staff celebrated. Genie cried and thanked Drakestorme, even after they pulled their usual disappearing act.
People expected them to run away with the money but Genie got to work immediately. The Cape's visit made donations increase and parents started to file in once more. Within a few months, conditions for the children were improved, the pile of non-granted Wishes started to dwindle quickly and in a few years they had buildings all over the world and were the number one Children's Charity. Genie won multiple awards for their work and determination. Things were finally looking up for Genie and the charity.
"My wish is to be just like Genie"
That wish was first made by a ten-year-old Elyssa Jones, a girl who was suffering from a lung disease. The staff didn't know what to say to that. Genie was brought before little Elyssa and she repeated her wish.
"Do you know what it means to be Genie?"
"It means to help people and grant their wishes no matter what!"
"Isn't that just being a superhero?"
"Nope, you make it special because you try your super hardest to make us happy! You don't care about what those people outside think even when they say you do bad things! You always do things to grant our wishes even if it makes you tired! You let us stay in a very fancy hospital but you live in a tiny house and sacrifice many because you love us very very much! And we love you very very much too, Genie!"
Genie and the surrounding staff's hearts were moved and Genie spent the rest of the day brainstorming until they got an idea that would change everything. They went back to Elyssa with a smile
"When you get better, would you like to be Genie?"
They made a pinkie promise and crossed their hearts.
The day Genie passed away, the Charity and the world mourned for a paragon of generosity. Questions of who would take up their mantle rose and the question was answered when the Elyssa Jones, now an adult, took on the name of Genie and continued their legacy and it was she, who started the Genie training project.
Meetings with non-Caped, Powered people were made. The staff and children who wanted to 'Be Genie' were taken aside and Genie launched a secret training project for those the new prospect 'Genies' and given top-notch education and training and ran by a code;
'Grant The Wish, No Matter What'
It was standard protocol that the staff was trained in a multitude of skills to meet the children's every need and to handle even the stubbornness of people and customers.
The newer, more challenging Wishes could now be granted. Those that involved seeing a small amount of lava or beating up a supervillain that hurt their parents, wishes like these could also be granted. The public was kept in the shadows about the Genie Project, with them thinking that the Charity was just very good at their job. The name Genie became a rank, for those who wished to help grant the Wishes of these children. The other children were as clueless as the customers and they kept their jobs of simple staff of a charity, albeit one capable of deterring villain attacks to the children, making sure none of the damages from the battles between Capes and Villains got to their area and granting even the most impossible of Wishes.
You were a child from one of the GAW-funded orphanages with nothing to lose. Your disease was incurable and you didn't wish for anything special
"I want to live"
That was your wish. And in a few years, it was granted. Feeling grateful, you signed up as one of the nurses for the children but you didn't expect to be trained in espionage, diplomacy, combat and things worthy of a secret agent or a Cape. Most of the time, you did normal work, taking care of the children among other normal things but when you were called to Grant A Wish, you prepared yourself to deal with the abnormal and things Capes take a long time to do.
"I wanna meet Dr. Beezelbub!"
The most recent wish you were assigned to grant was one of the 'weird' ones; getting an audience with the current greatest supervillain in the world was not going to be easy but you were the Genie in little Mikey's bottle so you resolved to do so.
It was the first challenging task in a while, as there were traps almost everywhere and the henchmen were more than just competent mooks, however Dr. Beezlebub still followed the same unspoken rules and habits of most villains, which made it relatively easier to get to his main headquarters
"No mere mortal could have possibly gotten past all my traps and henchmen unscathed! Who are you? Who sent you?"
"I'm not with any of the licensed Caped groups, sir. I'm here from the Grant-A-Wish Children's Charity. There's been a request for you."

Here's a short story thing I wrote in school based on a writing prompt. Feedback, opinions and such is appreciated! As well as whether or notI should expand this verse or something. I wrote it on a whim during recess so the chance of that happening is pretty low but who knows? Enjoy!
