Your name is Jacob Anderson and you are a normal seventeen-year-old young man born and raised in the city of Las Angeyoto. Except not really since you're actually a clone of the original Jacob made out of an otherworld energy that comes from some kind of eldritch abomination or something along those lines. Despite being something of a dark magical clone, you have all the memories and skills of the original though you lack the insane amount of physical, magical and spiritual power that Prime Jacob has.

This would normally matter very little since your lifespan is usually about a week long due to Prime Jacob needing to kill you every time to gain your memories. It's a pain but what can a clone do. Technically nothing since you're ultimately expendable. Still, you would rather live as long as possible and by the looks of your current situation, you might get that chance after all.

You last remember helping the living doll mage, Evetta, demonstrate some magical all seeing eye tool that she had been working on. Unfortunately for you, the moment it was activated, it exploded, created a black hole which you got sucked into and everything after that is kinda blurry and - OH GOD THE EYES! THE EYES THAT ARE EVERYWHERE! THAT WHICH HAS BEEN SEEN AND SEES CANNOT BE UN - and then you woke up in a dirty alley on top of a bed of garbage bags.

Gross.

In any case, as soon as you wake up, you get back on your feet and take stock of your current circumstances. While you can't exactly tell from where you are, the designs of the buildings that you are in between are not in the typical American-Japanese hybrid design that usually permeates the near entirety of Las Angeyoto. You're in an alleyway so your view isn't all that great so you could be wrong. Still, something just feels off about this place and it unsettles you.

Nearby are the twitching unconscious forms of about four Ebon Shadows, black vaguely humanoid midgets that usually act as cannon fodder for your Black Army, along with four of the new Shadow creatures that you've been tentatively been calling Denizens, six-inch high beings of shadows that are possibly smarter than the average shadow but definitely weaker.

Next to them is none other than Evetta's Ebon Star.

Sweet.

An Ebon Star was essentially the Black KIngdom's (AKA Jacob Prime's) attempt at replicating the awesome reality warping powers of the Wishing Stone that the Company creates from loot drops of the manifestation of Humanity's darkside to empower their magical girls. It was wholly successful and where a Wishing Stone could only empower one girl, an Ebon Star was capable of either gifting five girls with the standard Company Magical girl powerset or one girl with Ebon Magical Girl Powers.

It could also serve as a massive influx of Ebon Power as well.

Which reminds you that you need to fill up soon on Ebon Power or else you start breaking down. You've seen what happens when a clone breaks down from insufficient Ebon Power reserves. It ain't a pretty sight. You should be fine for a couple of days but after that you'll need to drain someone of their life energy

First thing's first though. You need to find out where the hell you are and luckily for you, there's an old newspaper that looks to be a couple days old at best.

Huh, The Bay Bulletin. You've never heard of this Brockton Bay place before. It's dated the 2nd of April, 2011 so you're not only in an alternate reality but you're also in the past as well.

Just fucking lovely.

Reading through the old newspaper, you learn several facts.

1. You are no longer in the same reality as your own.
2. Superheroes and Supervillains are apparently a proper thing here. There might have been some back in your original world but you aren't really sure.
3. Brockton Bay apparently has a high villain-to-hero ratio
4. Times have been hard on Brockton Bay, no thanks to the high supervillain population.
4. The only other alternate reality that this reality has had contact with does not appear to be your own.

Man, first time in another reality and you just happen to land in what looks to be a pretty shit place. You're probably gonna be stuck here for a long while as well.

Well, you've got a bunch of shadows here already and they multiply are a pretty fast rate so there's that at least.

What are you gonna do?

Well, of course you're gonna go find out more about the city and this world of good-to-honest superheroes and villains.

Well, before you do anything, you should figure out what to do with this Ebon Star. You know that if you could use it to infuse yourself with its immense amount of Ebon Power within it, you could break through the limits restraining your abilities without having to spend days draining dozens of people of their energy. On the other hand, you could make a squad of magical girls/knights that would be inclined to obey your commands thanks to the subtle suggestion magic interwoven into the thing. One Ebon Star equals to five Ebon Star Shards which equals to five somewhat loyal soldiers.

Or you could just dump a whole Ebon Star onto a girl and make them your absolutely loyal subordinate with lots of magical firepower.

Personal Power, magical girls slash knights minions, or super magical girl subordinate.

Decisions decisions.

What will you do with the Ebon Star?
[ ] Consume it for immediate unlocking of some of your Original's power.
[ ] Find some people who are in need of help and offer them power in exchange for helping you.
[ ] Find a girl and give her the whole thing to make her your completely loyal subordinate.
[ ] Hang on to it. Maybe you'll find some other use for it or something.

Ebon Lord Reawakening
Rolling the star-shaped reality warping crystal of power around in your hand, you come to a decision. In this place far away from home, the only thing that you truly own is your own existence. Subordinates and minions come and go but you yourself are your own greatest ally. Thus, there was truly one choice to make. Bringing the Ebon Star up to your chest, you proceed to take in the immense power that is held within.

Immediately, you feel power surge throughout your body as it greedily drinks in the flow of power from the Ebon Star. You hiss in pain as you feel your body quickly reach its limits. You grit your teeth and hold the energy within yourself, letting not a single drop of the veritable storm of power leak out from your body. The false skin of humanity that conceals your true nature as a construct of energy ripples and bulges as imitation bones, muscle and flesh dissolves and are remade repeatedly. It is your power and it shall obey you without exception. Either you adapt or die.

The struggle to control the vast power of Ebon seems to last for an eternity. Such is the pain that your perception of the world seems to fall away with only the agony of breaking through the limit your sole companion. After what feels like years or seconds, your body finally calms down and you feel the familiar sensation of your power simply snapping into place as it stabilizes into proper form.

You awaken from the trance tired from the exertion of elevating yourself to a higher state of being, your clothes soaked in sweat and some random hobo riffling through your pockets.

....

The unwashed vagrant freezes in place the moment your eyes meet. The man opens his mouth to say something but it is far too late for the unfortunate hobo. Your hand grabs the man by the face and you allow your senses to take in the man's existence and soul. You frown as you try and feel of the man's soul yet you can feel nothing. It was almost as if the man had no soul at all which was impossible. Obviously, you were doing something wrong. Hoping to gain access to the man's soul, you inject a shot of Ebon Power into your victim. The man gasps, either in pain or euphoria as your power cycles through the man's body.

You smile as you finally sense the man's soul, hidden deep within his physical existence. Pulling the soul out from the deepest recesses of the man's metaphysical existence, you mentally grasp hold of it and drink deeply your fill of energy.

Life energy and the smallest amount of mana is coaxed out from the man's soul, immediately transforming into the Ebon Power that fuels your existence and power. Draining the homeless man of most of his energy, you let out a sigh of satisfaction before you unceremoniously drop the man to the ground.

You feel much much better and closer to your original self though you are still a far way off. Feeling out one of your more familiar abilities, you flick your hand out and a stylized pistol appears within your hand. Excellent.

Yes, this will do just fine for the time being.

Tossing the weapon aside, knowing that it would soon disappear without your presence, you kick off the ground, launching yourself into the air, gently landing on the roof of the building to your right. While only a few stories tall, it is enough to give you a view of the city you are in. Brockton Bay for all purpose and intent look just like any other American city that isn't an architectural American-Japanese hybrid. It actually feels a lot more...depressing looking with how subdued the colors are in comparison to the brighter hues that tend to make up Las Angeyoto.

Your shadows and denizens rise from a pool of darkness that appears next to you and look to you, awaiting further instruction. Well, time to get to work then. Next stop, the local library.

-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-

Thank god for library computers. Brockton Bay central library was one of the fancier looking places at least on the outside, a throwback to what you assume was Brockton Bay's more prosperous days. The trip here hadn't taken long. An elderly old lady was nice enough to provide you directions to the place and you had arrived shortly after the library had opened so there were plenty of public computers for you to use.

It was both reassuring and dispiriting to find that the internet was pretty much the same despite you being in another reality. It takes you about half an hour to skim through the history of this world. There were a lot of differences in this world like the fact that there was definitely no Las Angeyoto in this reality.

You learnt stuff about the Protectorate, the PRT, the local heroes in Brockton Bay, villains, gangs and a lot of other stuff.

You were shocked to learn about the Endbringers and you couldn't understand why there were villains when there were these three monsters that were wrecking everyone's shit with impunity.

Man, from what you've read on the news and all the articles online, you did not have a good impression of this world. Still, barring finding some cape that could send you back home, you were going to be stuck here for the foreseeable future. The Original Jacob probably won't bother looking for you since you are a clone of him and an expendable one at that. Best to try and make the best of things, you suppose.

Having finished your research, for the time being, you leave the library and take some time to think deeply about what you were going to do from here on out. Of course, you would like to go home but barring a miracle, that wasn't going to happen anytime soon. What are you going to do?

[ ] Go the hero route. Since you're pretty much functioning on your own without any real purpose other than what you decide yourself, you might as well give being a superhero a try. Go check out the Protectorate since they've been doing this hero thing for some plus going legit might be a nice change of pace for a change. You can always bail if things don't work out for you.

[ ] It's hard to break old habits so you might as well stick to what you know and that's being a morally ambiguous mystery guy with powers. Now you just have to find a place to crash and set up shop. Let's see how Brockton Bay reacts to the presence of the Amazing and Mysterious Mage known as Ebon!

[ ] You've regained some of the Original's power and you're just itching to use them. Go find some criminal scum and engage in gratuitous amounts of violence. Maybe destroy a gang or two while you're at it. Honestly, you really need to let out some steam. Getting thrown into another reality was not on your fucking to do list!

[ ] Gangs, villains, monsters. This world is full of dark forces. Why not join them? There's plenty of fun to be had with robbing banks and beating down super-powered thugs in spandex. Who knows, eventually you could conquer this pitiful, grimdark world. You'd love to see Original Jacob's face then.

Your New (Temp) Home Away From Home
[X] It's hard to break old habits so you might as well stick to what you know and that's being a morally ambiguous mystery guy with powers. Now you just have to find a place to crash and set up shop. Let's see how Brockton Bay reacts to the presence of the Amazing and Mysterious Mage known as Ebon!

It takes you a while to find a good place to hide out and keep your stuff in. Unlike before where you got stupid lucky with your caravan lot that had a secret underground base, you aren't so lucky in this world. Without money or id, and a need for privacy, you reluctantly settle down in a relatively dry location in one of the big container ships that were part of Brockton Bay's Boat Graveyard. It was kinda depressing how all these boats were left to rust away here after a worker's strike backfired horribly, as far as you could tell. Something like this would have been dealt with a long time ago back home.

Still, the Boat Graveyard was not the safest place for a normal person and almost anything of value had long been stripped away by scavengers and the likes, making it the ideal place to reside in for your immediate needs. With your physical strength and agility, you can easily traverse through the broken hulls of long abandoned boats. The room that you have settled down in isn't particularly big and the wind gets in from the outside but thanks to some excess power left from the Ebon Star empowerment, you were able to patch things up nicely enough to make the place semi-livable. For the short term, it will do as a temporary base of operations. Your shadows don't seem to mind, particularly your denizens who have begun exploring the boat you're in with the help of the Shadows.

Having secured a place to stay for the time being, you head back out into the city to familiarize yourself with certain landmarks and locations. You're thankful that you're reacquired your Ebon Power conversion ability since it lets you substitute nourishment with both life energy and Ebon Power. You still like a good hamburger though and you do need resources, mainly monetary ones in order to set up something of a service around this place. Plus it's usually easier to buy stuff instead of stealing it. Less hassle and less chance of shit happening.

You move swiftly and quietly, using a little of the more mundane shinobi skills that you had copied from the ninja captives you held back at your home base back in your home dimension. While not perfect, it's enough to keep people off your back as you move through the streets. Having decided to go do the usual thing, you figured that there was one thing that you needed - a disguise, much like the one you used when you went and did your Ebon Lord duties. Unfortunately, without your magical capabilities unlocked, you can't glamour your appearance into something else.

So with that in mind, you decide a change in your alter-ego's appearance would be good for you.
You decide to go for:

[ ] Simplicity

[ ] Detective Noir

[ ] Death with Class

Fucking Ninjas
[X] Detective Noir

It takes you the rest of the day to procure, create, and modify what you need to create your costume. While you would prefer to use a glamour to hide your identity, lacking the actual ability to do so, you have to make do with an actual costume. Black pants, black turtleneck sweater, black leather gloves, and black military boots accompanied by a mask created from a vintage aviator headgear and goggles make up the base outfit. A long black trenchcoat and a black fedora complete the look. Most of your costume's parts were stolen - mostly from clotheslines with modifications done using Ebon Power. The fedora was taken from some random guy on the street via an Ebon-made fishing hook and line.

All in all, your new look gives off the impression of a dark mysterious stranger and a hardboiled detective from a crime noir film. It's a good look for you.

You do a couple of poses in a mirror made from covering part of your room's wall with a thin layer of silver paint. Yep, definitely styling. Shooting your reflection with your finger and a soft bang, you turn your eyes out toward's the sole window of your room.

The sun has set a short time ago and the city's night life was getting into the swing of things. It would be a little while before the criminals come out to play but with what you so far know about Brockton Bay, you probably wouldn't have to look too hard to find a little trouble on a night like this. For now though, you need to acquire a steady supply of Ebon Power. With more of that eldritch power flowing through your body, you could unlock more powers, more strength, and perhaps awaken new abilities that not even the original had.

The easiest way to go about that would be to kidnap a bunch of people and drain their life energy to convert into Ebon Power. However, your current location, as well as a number of other factors, makes doing such a thing currently more trouble than it was worth. So in the meantime, you'll just have to drain some unsuspecting victim or five of their life energy to help fuel your evolution from being a mere copy of Jacob Anderson to a truly distinct entity. Seeing as it is still early in the night, you decide to check out the nightlife of Brockton Bay.

You move through the city, leaping from rooftop to rooftop. Occasionally, you take a moment to watch the people down on the streets, taking in the general atmosphere of the city, and keeping an eye out for troublemakers and vagrants that people wouldn't care about. You soon begin to make out the different districts that make up the city of Brockton Bay. The Docks, the Broadwalk, Downtown and many other places were burned into your memory.

You think you'll move to the Docks. There seems to be a number of abandoned warehouses and apartments that you could fix up using your powers. Heck, with your powers, you could set up a thing where you give food made from Ebon Power to the low-class residents of the Docks in exchange for draining them of their life energy. A good night's sleep worth of life energy for several day's worths of food - a good deal for those in need.

While ruminating on this possible source of Ebon Power, a ninja promptly appears a short way from where you were sitting.

You stare at the ninja wearing an oni mask as they looked down at the streets below them. The ninja then turns away and freezes on the spot the moment they see you.

For several long seconds, the two of you stare at each other unsure of how to react. Your eyes glance down at the bandoleer of grenades and knives that they are wearing. At this range, you don't need to focus your energy sense to detect another's presence so how the fuck did this ninja get the jump on you. Finally, what felt like an eternity, you decide to break the silence. "Who the fuck are you?"

The moment you feel a new presence materialize behind you, you switch into combat mode. Without a word, a gun materializes in your both hands - a .40 Smith & Wesson M&P - and you aim one of them at the ninja in front of you while the other is aimed at the one behind you. Not expecting your weapons, the ninja at your front takes several shots to the chest and one in the head before falling and disintegrating into a cloud of white ash. The one behind you takes a glancing hit and immediately another ninja with the same appearance as the first one materializes nearby. You hear a click as the behind unpins a grenade.

Okay. You don't know what's the deal with this ninja but you can tell this one is going to be a pain in the ass.

You are already leaping away to a safe distance as the other one blows themselves up. The boom of the grenade elicits a reaction from the few people out on the streets below as drunks sober up and prostitutes feel in terror. You have little doubt that law enforcers and maybe even the heroes of this city will be on you soon. Your guns fire off and take out ninja number three just as ninja number four appears. You heard from Yuudai that while ninjas can do something like shadow clone techniques that you see in comics, it is a high-level technique that isn't easy to perform and has a high cost in ki. This guy on the other hand seems to be throwing them out without much trouble.

God ninjas are annoying!

A click indicates that your guns out of bullets. Seeing that you are out of ammo, the masked ninja creates more clones and sends them to attack you, several of them pulling the pins of their grenades out. Throwing away your handguns, you call up bigger guns. Two MAC-10 appears in your hands and you proceed to gun down several of the ninjas while you shoulder charge another off the rooftop. Luckily for you, it appears that if these clones take enough damage, they just disappear in a cloud of ash without exploding. Several clones throw grenades but you simply shoot them out in the air.

Knives are thrown but you simply ignore them as they simply bounce off your reinforced outfit. For the next few minutes, you're playing a cat and mouse game with the masked ninja who continues to make clones after clones to distract and attack you. The rooftop becomes littered in spent guns are you create and discard them at high speed in order to combat these shadow clones. Your accuracy and speed ensure that any grenades are taken out before they could explode. While you have little experience with firearms, your strength ensures that the recoil is a non-issue and your reflexes are more than enough to make up for your inexperience.

As you throw away your latest guns, the ninja stops his attacks as the two of you hears the sound of police sirens incoming.

The two of you look at each other and you get the feeling that this ninja has no desire to fight the police and will probably try and run.

What do you do?

[ ] Time to bail. You've wasted enough time trying to shoot down this slippery ninja. And you don't want to get involved with the authorities just yet.
[ ] Fuck the police. Continue the fight. You refuse to retreat just because the feds are here and you won't allow a ninja to leave without you getting a few hits in.
[ ] Stay where you are and wait for the cops to show. Might as well introduce yourself to the police, PRT, or whoever shows up.

End Of The First Day
[X] Time to bail. You've wasted enough time trying to shoot down this slippery ninja. And you don't want to get involved with the authorities just yet.
- [X] Disperse or dematerialize all spent Ebon made guns before going if can. No evidence
-[X] "Next time"
-[X] You think it was one big misunderstanding. Offer your services, give him your Ebon Business Card, then disappear.

"Tch," As much as you'd like to stick around and continue fighting, you weren't too keen on meeting the cops just yet. Pointing to the ninja, you make your intentions clear. "Next time, ninja. Next time."

The ninja seems to mull over your words before giving you a nod. "I am Oni Lee." He speaks slowly in monotone, as though not use to introducing himself.

You nod back and goes through the motions of reaching into your trench coat. In reality, you're creating a business card to give to the ninja. While you're a bit annoyed by the fact the ninja attacked you first, you can't really blame the guy for taking the initiative, especially when confronted by a dark mysterious stranger. The card is simple - just a white piece of cardboard with the name of your current persona and the e-mail address you made this morning at the library.

The name you put on the card was:
[ ] Ebon Noir
[ ] Troubleshooter
[ ] Shadow Tracer
[ ] Problem Sleuth
[ ] (Write-in)

You toss the card to Oni Lee who catches it without issue. He glances at the card and gives you what you assume to be a questioning look. Masks make it hard to tell. "My card." You simply say, letting Oni Lee decide what you mean by those words.

He nods before another Oni Lee appears on another rooftop. five seconds later, the Oni Lee before you disintegrate into a cloud of white ash. Wait, you're confused. Did he make a clone and switched places with it or did he somehow teleported while leaving behind a clone?

Well, whatever. Giving the scene a look over, you realise that you should probably clean up all the empty guns that you'd dropped during the fight. With a snap of your fingers and a mental command, the guns and bullet shells immediately dissipate into fading black smoke. You can't do anything about the bullet holes but you can't have everything.

With that done, you quickly leave the scene.

Within the hour, you're on the other side of the city. Downtown Brockton Bay was a much nicer place than the Docks. Wider streets did make it a bit harder to leap around the place and the skyscrapers did get in the way a bit but all in all a lot livelier than the Docks. While the fight didn't use up much Ebon Power, it was still imperative that you topped off your reserves. The PRT Building was also located Downtown as you quickly discovered when you saw the building with the shield logo bearing the letters 'P.R.T.' attached to the front.

The Parahuman Response Team - an organization made up of non-powered people to police the super-powered part of the population. Without having any meaningful contact with the PRT, you can't really judge whether they are effective or not. With how bad things are with the villains in Brockton Bay though, you believe that the PRT could probably use a helping hand dealing the gangs.

It's not your problem at the moment though. Putting the PRT aside for the time being, you move away from the PRT building and begin searching for suitable sources of Life Energy to drain. Eventually, you come across a pair of random neo-nazi punks - possible members of that racist white supremacist group, Empire Eighty-Eight, if you recall. Nazis were always acceptable targets in any place so nobody will care much if you drain the punks dry.

Silently, you tail the punk as he stalks through the dark alleyways, looking for some unsuspecting victim. Unfortunately for them, this is their last night out on the town. The moment they are beyond the public's eye, you dropped down behind them. Without given them time to even utter a word, you grab both of them by the mouth and immediately begin draining their life energy.

Before your eyes, they seem to visibly age as their bodies undergo the heavy strain of having their Life Energy ripped out from their bodies. In left than half a minute, they are decrepit withered husks that are barely hanging onto life by a thread. With one last effort, you drain the last of their life force. The moment you do so, your victims break apart into nothing but dust, leaving behind only small fragments of bone, their clothing, and effects. After spending a few seconds basking in the fair amount of Life Energy contained within you, you convert it into Ebon Power.

It's not much considering the poor Life Energy to Ebon Power conversion ratio but it's a start. Combined with what's left after using up the EBon Star, you could probably unlock one of your original abilities if you tried. Shifting through the remains of your victims, you find a couple hundred dollars, as well as a pistol and a knife. Taking the cash, the clean up the remains and dump everything into a nearby bin.

Dusting your hands off, you head back to your temporary home at the Boat Graveyard. Arriving home, you find that your Shadows and Denizens have somehow found a bed roll along with a matching set of pillows and blankets. Giving your minions a quick affection pat on the head, you head off to sleep.

Tomorrow, you will go looking into the city's situation more seriously as well as find a proper place to set up shop.

...

You have 400 EP to spend on upgrades. You may spend them towards unlocking a new ability or upgrading a pre-existing one.

[ ] EP Spending Plan

Tomorrow is a new day and there are many things to be done. What do you do after you wake up in the morning?
[ ] Write-in a plan of action

AN: I hereby declare that I am accepting omakes for this quest. Good omakes will be awared EP which can be spent however the Omake Writer wishes.

Just A Typical Morning for an Ebon Lord Incognito
[X] Plan Ebon

You wake up to an unfamiliar ceiling. It takes a few seconds to remember that you are no longer in your own world and that you are sleeping in an abandoned cargo ship. It's six in the morning according to your phone which reminds you that you pick up a charger or a USB cable to charge your phone's battery.

Wait. Shit. Since your phone is here with you, your replacement that the original will have already made will be in trouble with your parents for losing his phone. Well that sucks for him. You broke your phone once before during a fight with some idiot punk and you caught shit for doing so. It took ages to get everyone's contact details and apps redownloaded as well.

You suppose it's no longer your problem. You wonder if your phone could work in this world. Cellphones can't be too different in this world. Leaving that thought aside for the time being, you prepare for your second day on a parallel Earth. Cleaning up is simply a matter of transforming the dirt, sweat, and grime on your body into minute amounts of Ebon Power. It's no substitute for a nice warm shower but it's good enough for your current circumstances.

After you've freshened up with some ebon-made water, you head back out into the city. Being early morning, it's fairly easy for you to slip out from your temporary base without being seen. It's imperative that you find a new place soon. You're sure that sooner or later, someone will realise you're living in a boat. For now though, you make do going out in your Ebon Noir identity and carrying your normal clothes in a reversible backpack. When you've found a place away from any spying eyes, you change back into your civilian clothing and no-one is none the wiser.

On a slight whim, you seek out the local prisons in Brockton Bay. It takes you a good chunk of the morning to find them. There are a couple of prisons to be found in Brockton Bay. You had bee thinking about how to secure a steady supply of Ebon Power and the idea of draining prisoners in their cells had seemed promising. However, with your current capabilities, you most likely wouldn't be able to pull off something like sneaking into a cell without being caught. If you want to go draining prison inmates, you'd have to send your Shadows or learn how to go invisible and phase through iron bars.

Though it does make you wonder what they do for supervillains. From what you can see, the prisons around here aren't much different from the ones back home if with somewhat better security measures but with what you know so far about parahumans, you doubt these prisons would be able to hold a supervillain for long unless they were particularly weak or their powers were ill-suited for escape. Having memorized the address of the prisons, you have a quick brunch at a small cafe.

After paying for the large meal, you start looking for a pawn shop. With you ability to create non-complicated material, something like gold is rather easy to make for you. In the privacy of a public toilet, you create several different gold necklaces to pawn. A couple of minutes and suddenly you're carrying around what is probably a couple thousand dollars worth of bling. It doesn't take you long to locate a pawn shop and thanks to a fake driver's license courtesy of those punks from last night, you were able to get some usable cash without much issue. You had to make a big show about how you inherited these gold chains from your rich uncle who passed away recently but eventually you leave the shop with a small bundle of cash hidden on your person.

You now have 3000 dollars in cash.

With that done, you head back to the library to continue your studies of this world and Brockton Bay.

For the rest of the morning, you search up news articles, history sites, forums, and Parahuman Online. As you learn more about this version of Earth, you find yourself getting increasingly annoyed and horrified at the terrible state of things. Brockton Bay was a pretty terrible place to live in if you didn't have cash or influence. With the city practically in the hands of gangs run by supervillains as well as several other smaller but nonetheless dangerous crooks and villains, it's little wonder why the poorer areas of the city are in bad shape.

You also find out that the ninja that you fought last night, Oni Lee, was a member of the Asian Bad Boyz, ABB for short. According to what you found, the ABB was controlled by a powerful cape known as Lung who had once fought the Endbringer Leviathan to a standstill. You are honestly confused to why someone like that is running a gang in a city like this when he could obviously do so much more with that kind of firepower. Still, you suppose it had to do with the fact that after that particular Endbringer battle, Japan had been demoted to a third-world country with millions dead thanks to the hydrokinetic monster.

Those punks that graciously donated their life force to help fuel your powers were part of Empire Eighty-Eight. Empire Eighty-Eight was a gang of white supremacist or neo-nazis as far as you can tell. It was a powerful organization with possible connections to other racist and white supremacist groups all around North America. In your books, Nazis were always acceptable targets for violent testing and fight practice. With about a dozen capes on its roster though, Empire Eighty-Eight was not to be underestimated. You could probably take them but it would take time and probably most of your strength and there's a good chance that you could actually get badly hurt. Something to put on your to do list, you suppose. It's fine to be a little bit racist since everyone was a little bit racist but to make it your guiding ideology was just stupid.

There was a number of smaller minor gangs like the Merchants but you didn't really care about learning more than where they tend to be based around. The Merchants sounded like a group you could probably take over within a day if you were lucky.

Man, with how things are in this city, you could probably go around draining negative energy and make a huge profit in Ebon Power. Of course, draining too much negative energy was likely to make people reckless, arrogant, and suicidally overconfident. Lack of fear and the likes tend to do that. Gotta keep the balance after all.

After checking up on the villains of Brockton Bay, you switched your focus to the local heroes. There was the Protectorate, the Wards and there was New Wave.

The Protectorate was government-sponsored superhero team and the Wards were their...sidekicks? Heroes in training? Whatever. New Wave was a group of heroes consisting of two related nuclear families formally known as the Brockton Bay Brigade, who changed their name after deciding to reveal their identities to the world. They believe in superheroes without secrets and full accountability, though the movement stalled upon the murder of one of their members in her civilian identity. Frankly, you have to say that New Wave dropped the ball there.

Life isn't a comic book and superheroes tend to be able to do their thing because nobody knows who's behind the mask, especially villains.

You were reaching the limit of your attention span and decided to get off the computer after getting the basic idea of who and what the heroes were able to do. You also take a bit of time to memorize the whole PRT rating systems they used to describe the threat levels of a cape's superpowers.

You wonder what rating people would give your current self.

Leaving the library, you take a seat on a bench nearby and think about what you were going to do for the rest of the day.

What do you do to fill in your afternoon?
