Earth Defense Force games thread.

I decided to make a EDF mega thread because it seems that SV doesn't have one.

EDF is a game series that started back in the 2000s. It has the players fighting against giant insects and robots with a arsenal of weapons that would make Cable feel inadequate, and has a fully destructible environment. Just recently the DLC Golden Storm has released for EDF Iron Rain. While Iron Rain isn't the best game in the series it is still a fun one, and the DLC re introduces some very tough enemies.

EDF 5 is typically considered the best in the series, with over 1000 weapons, well balanced classes, and more enemies than ever

It also allows you to punch multiple not Godzillas repeatedly with a giant robot so there is that.

Oh hey, EDF. I've played Insect Armageddon and Shadow of New Despair, and I have to say that SoND is awesome. Sadly, the series is rather obscure. There was another game that was released in Japan recently, but it was never released in the west to my knowledge. Pity, really. What I've heard about it makes it sound really interesting.

I haven't heard of any game that hasn't been released in the US as well recently. EDF 5 took a while but has been released in the US, and EDF Iron Rain released simultaneously in all countries. Also, EDF 5 basically takes the SoND formula and makes it better in every way. The weapons are more balanced, the enemies smarter, and now you can get equipment that improves your character. Ranger gets a sprint that can out run cars and Fencer can get the ability to boost 10 times in a row. It is insane.

Sorry, I was thinking of EDF 5, and while I do like what I hear about it, it doesn't seem to be available in Europe. More's the pity.

Oh, this. I've played 4.1 SoND a bunch with friends, and while I'd not classify it as a great game, it is gut-bustingly hilarious and so hilariously over-the-top it's hard not to like.

Playing with friends helps, of course, but it's hard to be grumpy when goomba-stomping ayys and giant bugs with huge-ass robots. I'd not looked at the other titles before now. I should really do that.

No physical release outside of Asia is the biggest reason I haven't gotten it yet, even though I really... really want it.
It is worth it, go for it. If you can get your hands on the South Asian disc it has full english voice acting, but you will have to pay more. Play Asia has one for $50 right now.

So I took the plunge and bought it on PS4... and now they've announced it's going to be releasing on Steam this month. Gaddamit.

Whoa what the hell? It does have a Steam page, but this seems a bit sudden.

...I do like that it's going to get a PC port. I hope it'll be as polished as 4.1.
I never actually expected them to release on PC.
Yeah, me either. Glad to see them do so, though.

That fanart looks good, where did you find it and who's the artist?

On the EDF discord server, not sure what the sources are, most are probably Japanese.

The articles on the missions are pretty good, as are the ones on the vehicles. The 4.1 mission articles are pretty funny.
Quite, but there are still noticable gaps in the coverage. Like the latter half of the campaign for the mission articles. And yes, whomever wrote those articles really does have a way with words. :)

Really loving the over the top nature of this game. I have only played 5 on PC and never tried any of the others before now, but this series is a hidden gem. Michael Bay would be proud.
