You shouldn't have gone into debt to pay for more gaming time, but you thought you could launch a lucrative gaming career. You thought wrong. How can you get out of this perilous position? And how can you bankroll your virtual adventures?

A single character quest in an original setting (one I've been developing for various purposes for a while now) on Earth at the turn of the 22nd century, and in your choice of fabricated game settings.

When voting for actions, dice rolls will available to be assigned to the actions. (Inspired by Dicey Dungeons, kinda.)

Dreaming in the 22nd Century

09:05, 1/1/2101

You awaken from your standard eight hours, which you pushed later than normal for obvious reasons. You didn't make it a habit of staying up past midnight, but a new century was something which happened only once in most lifetimes. There were still a few people around who remembered 2001, but extremely few who wanted to talk about it. You certainly weren't counting on living to 2201. It was possible - you were only in your twenties! - but a hundred years was a very long time to wait. Sure, the event could be revisited virtually, but it wasn't the same as being part of it, shaping the experience and contributing in some small ways towards the pool of memes which might last a little longer than average. The point was, you'd stayed up being social and had pushed back dreamtime by an hour.

Now you were awake, hungry, and ready to eat. It being a new century and a big day for you, maybe you should splurge on something fancy from the fab to satiate your hunger.

[] Your favourite themed sugary breakfast cereal. (+2 energy and -1 comfort for the morning, cost 5 lux)
[] A big and hearty hot breakfast. (+1 energy and +1 comfort for the morning, cost 8 lux)
[] Fresh fruit platter. (+1 energy and +1 comfort for the day, cost 15 lux)
[] Standard ration portion. (neutral, free, but sufficient)

As you ate, you checked over your personal messages, calendar reminders, and news alerts. Your standard model Reality Extention/Augmentation Lens had only basic motion filtering, so you had to deal with the occasional frustration of news articles scrolling backwards or switching tabs while you chewed or swallowed. Such was life.

Most of the global news was related to the new century countdown (you were in an early time zone, so NYE celebrations were still ongoing) and associated memes, pranks, and artistic creations.

Ready for the day, you headed out of your one-person standard living allotment and into the long straight hallway. The featureless white walls were broken up only by a procession of equally spaced doors to living allotments the same size and shape as your own - at least to the naked eye. As you and everyone else had a REAL connected to the city network, you saw whatever the residents chose to display on their exterior walls (unless you wanted to block it, or felt like switching off).

One of your neighbours had her wall plasted with animated clips from a drunken party she'd attended last night. As your glance tracked from one to another, each expanded and was annotated with sloppily-written descriptive text, dotted with inscrutable iconography and emoglyphs.

[] You thought it rather unsafe that people put so much of their lives on public display.
[] You were annoyed at how people tended to overshare.
[] You liked the sense of community of seeing glimpses into the lives of those around you.
[] You were jealous at her follower count.
[] You were jealous that she went to a party rather than commentating on other people's party streams from home.
[] You were so distracted watching the party clips that your REAL beeped at you to stop you from walking into someone.

Your time display showed you that it was now 9:20, plenty of time to get downstairs to the arena. You had a robot fight to win, and a debt to pay.

City 216 is the cheapest, discounting the luxury trip offers at the end for each city since we're probably never going to try them.
Ironically, 216 also has the more pricey luxury offer out of all the options.

@veekie @hcvquizibo are those intended as votes for eating standard rations, or votes for not eating any breakfast?
Or did you not wish to offer a breakfast related vote at all?

Take Me Down to the Bot Game
Take Me Down to the Bot Game

You opted to save your meagre funds in the face of your little debt problem, and settles for the standard rations available to every citizen of Earth. The food fabber churned out today's combinations of flavoured and texture portions, and you dutifully chewed on your healthy allotment of guaranteed safe substances calculated to keep your body healthy and fit. Well, the fit part was partially up to you. Today's flavour was inoffensive. None of the flavours ever were. The texture was a little sticky, but not so much as to be unpleasant. Whatever algorithm selected the flavours had a fine line to tread, between keeping people content enough not to complain, but not so utterly pleased that no one would want to pay for extra luxuries. The same went for the rooms, and the clothes. Perfectly serviceable, nothing wrong with them, nothing to be upset about, not even deadeningly boring. Sufficient, but with room for improvement.

That was fine by you. As you were occupied reading your news feed, you didn't have attention to spare on a delicious breakfast.

Your main area of interest this morning was the The Game. The one you'd gone into debt to play 8 hours a day, rather than settling for the free daily hour. You'd thought you could do well enough and attract enough attention and fans to easily pay back your debt. You'd been wrong, so far, but maybe you could learn something to turn the situation around before it was too late. (Bonus to in-game strategy, details TBA)

[game][x] The game you'd chosen was...
-[] Phantoms of Fortune - Sorcery of Nightmares
A Lovecraftian Horror themed treasure hunting adventure

-[] Shardstar Spacegate - Moonlight Inferno
Vast intergalactic war, or diplomacy.

-[] Heaventale 3: Case and Angel
A lawyer game set in a world where angels and humans live together.

-[] Knightborne - Barbarians of Hope
A horribly historically-inaccurate 'medieval fantasy' meets Pandemic

-[] Souls of Runes - Demonshift
Unlock runic secrets in the struggle to protect your reality from universe-hopping demons!

-[] Dragonview 2: Dragon Blade
The dragons are returning. Again.

-[] Incredible Heroes 3: Forbidden Rise
Superheroes vs. Supervillains

-[] Brutalsphere - Robots of Conquest
The most realistic bot fighting simulation ever.

Despite having used up 35 of the 40 days you'd purchased, your character was not yet at level 5.
[problem][x] Your progress had been stunted by...
-[] A poor starting location which gave you very few opportunities to advance.
-[] Deleting your character and restarting after accidentally disassembling all your gear.
-[] Recently starting the game, after getting bored of the first game you'd tried.
--[] Choose which game that was, from the list above.
-[] Hackers stole your character
-[] You were permakilled and your character had no inheritors

You also watched some bot fight highlight videoclips, to help you feel a little less unprepared for what you were about to do. (Gained some bot fight knowledge, details TBA.) As you finished the provided tumbler of orange juice, you were pleased to see that your favourite extremely ancient meme was catching on again, as expected. It was only fitting that 'All Your Base' came back in 2101.

Local news for City 216 - known informally to some denizens by the archaic name 'Adelaide' - was not particularly interesting. Just a bit of quickly-quelled violence typical of a significant day of celebration, and run-of-the-mill crimes committed by idiots who were too lazy to put in any effort to earn any luxuries, and too dumb or too self-confident to understand that they would be caught immediately. There was one attempted murder over a romantic squabble, which the city was able to prevent in time. The perp was relocated away from the source of contention and put on reduced priviledge and mobility for a time. Other than that, everything was fine, and normal, just as it had been all your life. One of the main power generators was due for a scheduled overhaul next week. Predicted travel to other cities for summer tourism was high.

You rolled your eyes at that last item. What was so great about real beaches that people would waste their lux and their time, travelling? Virtual waves, virtual sun, and virtual sharks were so much safer, and so much cheaper. Even free, in small doses.

As you walked by familiar virtually-enhanced walls, you left a few comments and upvotes on posts by the neighbours you were most friendly with. It was comforting to feel like you were part of a community, even though you rarely saw any of htem in person. Though from some of the photos it was clear that many of your neighbours did like to hang out together, at least occasionally.

You soon reached an elevator, which you rode down to a basement level. All the levels felt about the same though. Exterior windows were a rare luxury, while lighting and live or recorded views of exotic exterior locations were plentiful. You followed your virtual waypoint a doorway marked as a competitor entrance to your local sector's arena.

Four young toughs were waiting inside. Vent Blast's associates.

"You made it on time," said the tallest, who seemed to be in charge. 'Oilspot' was his chosen nickname. "Shame you couldn't manage that with your debt."

"Uh... I tried. So... you said I'm filling in for Vent Blast?"

"Yeah, VB's on a daily contract to show up or provide an alternate. There's nothin' important on today and VB wanted to leave today open for... party recovery. You owe big, so you're the alternate."

"And this covers my debt?"

"This covers fifty lux, and we hold off five more days on collecting the rest."

"Fifty lux? That's it?"

"Fifty lux and we're not adding any more interest this time," Oilspot said with a sneer. "Count yourself lucky."

That left you 1450 lux in the hole, and you only had 120 to your name. Plus you might earn another 15 or so in the five days grace before you were sunk. "What if I can't..."

"Then you might find yourself in a more active, less safe role in bot fights."

"The city doesn't allow that," you said with false bravado.

Oilspot shrugged. "True. But you can make all that go away. Maybe even come out ahead."

"How?" you ask, failing to hide your eagerness.

"A wager, on the bot you're piloting. This is a four-way free-for all, but you can choose which bot you want, cos we're generous like that. You can bet as much, or as little, as you like. How's that sound?"

"Sure, I guess. What are the bots in this fight?"

Oilspot made a flourish with both hands, and an icon appeared in your inbox. You virtually pulled out a stack of datasheets and started looking through them.

[bot][x] Which bot do you choose?
-[] Cheatah XL
- A fast and agile bot with four light slashing weapons (paws) and a stronger crushing weapon (jaws). Has acute sensors and light armour. 4x wager return on win
-[] Scorp
- A heavily armoured scuttler with light crushing pincers, and a slow charging high powered tail laser. 5x wager return
-[] Grenado
- An immobile many-armed vertical cylinder which spins at high speed, flinging a variety of projectiles including its detachable arms and armour plates. 3x wager return
-[] Mirriad
- A spikey rolling boll covered with mirrors and bristling with low powered but aimable lasers. 6x wager return

Botwise:
Its a free for all, so early advantages means you can be dogpiled.
Gredndo is immobile, costing initiative, everyone gets to attack on THEIR choice, while it has great attack power, Scorp will wipe it out simply because it has no answer to that.

Mirriad is the gimmick play, functionally immune to lasers...which only Scorp uses. Its theoretically capable of annoying Scorp all day but user error will kill it there, because its offense is too weak to hurt anything but Cheatah reliably.

Cheatah is basically the melee specialist, good for dealing with Scorp or Mirriad, but it has to basically fight Gredndo by timeout, because however agile it is closing in on an immobile target with numerous ranged attacks is a nonstarter.

Scorp is sort of the generalist tank, Gredndo is particularly vulnerable to it, Cheatah has the initiative, but can't do serious damage without getting potentially pinned down and lazored. Mirriad is the biggest pain for it, it can't actually DO much to Mirriad...not that Mirriad can do much to it either.

Your First Bot Fight - Round 1
Your First Bot Fight - Round 1

09:25, 1/1/2101

You carefully weigh the options, as well as you can given your limited knowledge of the options. Scorp seems like a pretty good option for surviving the fight while putting in some damage. So long as you don't end up facing Mirriad alone... though hopefully by then there's enough damage to Mirriad's armour that you can hurt it without hurting your own bot in the process.

"I'll put a hundred lux on Scorp," you declare, hoping this isn't a big mistake.

"Done," Oilstain says, making another gesture. A new icon appears, informing you that your REAL has a connection to a new device. You activate it and see a menu showing you Scorp's various subsystems. "The fight starts in five," Oilstain adds, unnecessarily. A countdown timer is prominently visible at the top of the virtual display.

You quickly figure out how to switch to Scorp's on-board cameras, mounted on its head and its tail, and also the overhead arena cameras. You can view any of these side by side or even make one replace your primary vision for full immersion. Like the other bots, Scorp is powered by a hydrogen vortex generator, which could easily run all the motors for movement, or provide power to supercapacitors for charging weapons. It was all fairly intuitive. The hard part was deciding when to attack, when to move defensively, and what part of what enemy was smartest to attack. Also the power output was somewhat unpredictable.

You can route power to:
- Defensive Maneuvers - twice as hard to hit (min die 3)
- Pincer Grab [target] for 2 damage (max die 4)
- Double Pincer Crush [target] for 5 damage (min die 5)
- Charge Tail Battery (any die, max charge 25)
- Pinpoint Pulse [target] for 1 damage (expend 3 charge)
- Megalase [target] for 8 damage (expend 20 charge)
- Defense Stance - Prepare laser to destroy incoming projectiles or do 2 damage to any weapon (expends 5 charge per actual hit)

Prospective targets:
- Cheatah XL: Paw 1-4, Mouth, Eye 1-2, Neck, Generator
- Grenado: Swinging Arm 1-8, Plate 1-20, Generator
- Mirriad: Laser 1-8, Mirror 1-24, Eye 1-6, Generator

You plan out your first 3 turns:
Power output dice:
Turn 1: 1, 5
Turn 2: 1, 2
Turn 3: 2, 3

Plan your turns by assigning the available power dice to actions and targets of your choice.

Example vote:
[x] Turn 1
-[x] Charge Tail Battery (1)
-[x] Double Pincer Crush Cheatah XL Mouth (5)
[x] Turn 2
-[x] Pincer Grab Cheatah XL Eye 1 (1) //not that it matters which die goes where in this case
-[x] Pincer Grab Cheatah XL Eye 2 (2)
[x] Turn 3
-[x] Defensive Maneuvers (3)
-[x] Charge Tail Battery (2)

(note how the dice numbers in parentheses for each turn correspond to the list above)

For people who haven't done so yet, please remember that [game] and [problem] votes are still available. (See previous update for those details.)

[X] Plan Charging Mah Lazors
-[X] Turn 1
--[X] Defense Stance(0)
--[X] Charge Tail Battery(1)
--[X] Charge Tail Battery(5)
-[X] Turn 2
--[X] Defense Stance(0)
--[X] Charge Tail Battery(1)
--[X] Charge Tail Battery(2)
-[X] Turn 3
--[X] Defensive Maneuvers(3)
--[X] Charge Tail Battery(2)

Think plan is better in this scenario.
Anyways, basic idea is to bank power and see where things fall first, we'd have the easiest time against the Cheetah, but its the best counter for Mirriad.

What exactly are "power output dice"? Are those results of 2d6 thrown somewhere offsite?

What is "max charge", do we need to stack power output?
Edit: apparently yes.

- Cheatah XL: Paw 1-4, Mouth, Eye 1-2, Neck, Generator
- Grenado: Swinging Arm 1-8, Plate 1-20, Generator
- Mirriad: Laser 1-8, Mirror 1-24, Eye 1-6, Generator
What are these numbers?

Does this do anything on Turn 1 if we don't have charge?

I suppose.
Still need a clarification about what the number ranges next to bot bodyparts are supposed to represent.

There's multiples of those parts, so you could choose to try targetting the same part multiple times, or target different ones with different attacks.
What exactly are "power output dice"? Are those results of 2d6 thrown somewhere offsite?
That's right. They represent the variable power produced by the generator.
The other bots will also get such dice rolled for them.
What is "max charge", do we need to stack power output?
Yep, the tail laser has a capacitor which basically lets you add up dice over multiple turns, up to a maximum of 25 in this case.
Does this do anything on Turn 1 if we don't have charge?
It gets charged up in that turn too, so it will have chage. And defense stance (and the other laser attacks) uses power from the capacitor, so it doesn't require dice.

So you might as well put that first (1) into Charge Tail Battery as well. (you still go into defensive stance though)

Don't worry too much, this is the tutorial. :D Questions are expected. I'm figuring out how this works in this format too.

Edit: and I'll go ahead with the plan as specified (apart from adding that extra unused 1 to the laser battery) since there's been no further votes.

You concentrate on powering up your tail laser battery, putting it to 6 energy out of 25. You don't make any attacks right away, but do watch out for any incoming attacks.

Cheatah XL leaps directly at you (3) and swipes at your bot's right eye with its front left paw (1). You nail the paw with a solid laser blast, causing the strike to be mostly ineffective, and greatly reducing the mobility of the paw. This leaves only 1 energy in the capacitor.

Grenado starts to spin faster (3) and faster (6), becoming a blur of arms.

Mirriad starts rolling around the perimeter of the arena (1) and fires what lasers it can bear with individually weak pulses, aiming at your bot's tail camera. A couple of them hit their target, damaging the sensors and reducing the accuracy of targeting things on your left side.

Turn 2:

You continue charging your tail battery, putting it up to 4 energy.

Cheatah XL leaps onto your back (2) and swipes at your bot's tail camera with its front right paw (1). The camera is left useless, leaving you having to figure out your aim indirectly with other cameras.

Grenado spins faster still (4) and releases one of its arms (2), trying to nail one of Scorp's pincers. It hits the body instead, denting an armour plate.

Mirriad rolls at high speed (5) into Grenado with an almighty crunch. Mirriad is batted backwards even faster, losing a couple of mirror plates from the hit, and losing another three plates and two lasers when it rebounds off the arena wall. The hit also immedately detatches two of Grenado's arms, which sail away through unoccupied parts of the arena and clatter against the walls. But the damage is not over, and Grenado tips over and makes violent contact with the arena floor while still spinning wildly. It is launched directly towards Scorp, but is bounced up by its arms and instead crashes into the side of Cheatah, denting its body and knocking it off you.

Grenado flops untidily on Scorp's left side, lying on it side with only two arms and ten armour plates remaining attached. Cheatah XL landed on its back on Scorp's right side.

Mirriad collects its bearings and trains what minilasers it can (3) on Scorp's left eyecam. None make solid hit, but a couple slice into the mechanism of its left pincer, reducing the damage it can deal by 1.

Turn 3:

You prepare Scorp for defensive maneuvers (3), being reading to avoid attacks from both sides. You also put some more power into the tail battery, bringing it up to 6 energy.

Cheatah XL struggles back to right side up (1), which leaves it close enough to try biting Scorp's right pincer (3). You manage to swat it away without too much trouble and only cosmetic damage.

Grenado releases a grenade (5), which plops down between it and Scorp, rather than flying out since it's not rotating. Then it tries using its motors (2) to flip itself away from the potential blast, but doesn't get far.

You can't move Scorp far from the grenade either, and Cheatah XL is in the way.

The grenade detonates, throwing Grenado a little further away and damaging its internal mechanisms through its missing armour plates. Grenado can't spin, and thus it can't fling any projectiles. It's essentially out of the fight.

Scorp is knocked against Cheatah XL, and its left pincer is damaged in the blast, reducing the damage it can deal by 1.

Mirriad rolls itself towards the pair (2) firing all of its lasers (5) as they are able to be directed towards the closest foe, which happens to be Scorp.

Laser fire rakes Scorp's left side, leaving some patches of the armour on its body glowing. The range of movement in its left pincer is reduced somewhat. But you manage to raise Scorp's tail enough that it is unscathed, and the remaining shots nail Cheatah XL in the back left leg, leaving it useless.

Summary:
Both Scorp's pincers have their damage reduced by 1, and the left one is less mobile. Its left armour is somewhat vulnerable and dented, and its tail camera is disabled, making aimed laser shots harder. Capacitor is at 6 energy.

Cheatah XL is to Scorp's right. Its front left paw is sluggish and its back right paw is inoperable.

Mirriad is to Scorp's forward left. It is missing a laser and 5 mirror plates.

Grenado is to Scorp's far right and is missing more than half its armour plates and most of its arms. Also it is lying on its side and it's spin-motors are inoperable.

For people who have not voted for them yet, remember that [game] and [problem] votes are still open. Don't miss out on shaping your character's past and future!

-has 1 vote so far

-[] Shardstar Spacegate - Moonlight Inferno
Vast intergalactic war, or diplomacy.

-[] Heaventale 3: Case and Angel
A lawyer game set in a world where angels and humans live together.

-[] Knightborne - Barbarians of Hope
A horribly historically-inaccurate 'medieval fantasy' meets Pandemic

-[] Souls of Runes - Demonshift
Unlock runic secrets in the struggle to protect your reality from universe-hopping demons!

-[] Dragonview 2: Dragon Blade
The dragons are returning. Again.

-[] Incredible Heroes 3: Forbidden Rise
Superheroes vs. Supervillains

-[] Brutalsphere - Robots of Conquest
The most realistic bot fighting simulation ever.

Despite having used up 35 of the 40 days you'd purchased, your character was not yet at level 5.
[problem][x] Your progress had been stunted by...
-[] A poor starting location which gave you very few opportunities to advance.
-[] Deleting your character and restarting after accidentally disassembling all your gear.
-[] Recently starting the game, after getting bored of the first game you'd tried.
--[] Choose which game that was, from the list above.
-[] Hackers stole your character

Would recommend reposting the options every round. Its all on the same page for now but later it'd be a pain in the ass.

Random Power Rolls for enemies:

2,2
5,4

Grenado dice:

6,5

Mirriad dice:

Turn 4:

You quickly decide Cheatah XL's grasping jaw is the greatest threat to Scorp, and conveniently it is on the side with the less damaged pincer. Fortunately you remember seeing a similar move in a video clip during your breakfast viewing. The memory inspires you to make Scorp aim its pincer at the corner of the jaw, avoiding the nastiest teeth and bending the hinge all out of skew. Closing the jaw should be quite a strain after that. But since Scorp is still caught in the middle of multiple foes, you prepare to take quick defensive action.

Cheatah XL's controller doesn't even bother with the jaw attack after the damage you dealt. Instead it swipes at the offending pincer with each of its front claws in turn (2,2). The slashes are perfectly aligned to pry apart an armour seam in the claw and sever a vital electrical conduit, putting the pincer entirely out of commission.

Grenado rests helplessly where it landed.

Mirriad rolls past the front of Scorp (2), peppering its eyecams with flashes of fire from its minilasers. You manage to keep Scorp away from the worst of it, and block a few potentially blinding flashes with the left pincer, leaving scorch marks on the armour.

Turn 5:

While Mirriad is close by, you have Scorp lunge at it for a Double Pincer Crush (5), hoping to reach through its missing armour plates to rip out its generator or at least the surrounding cables. But only one pincer responds to your commands, and that one is sluggish, so the crushing isn't so effective. But Mirriad's rolling motion causes a couple of its lasers' power conduits and data lines to become wrapped around the pincer, pulling them loose of the corresponding laser emitters and cameras, and leaving the two bots entangled. You put Scorp's remaining energy into the capacitor, taking it to 10 energy and preparing the tail laser for defensive action.

Cheatah XL springs at Scorp with all the force its remaining working legs can muster (4) in an attempt to claw-punch Scorp in its weakened side-armour which is now exposed to it.. You have no difficulty in following its obvious flight arc and directing a spicy-hot tailbeam into the outstretched paw. But as effective as that is at defanging the punch, the full mass of Cheatah XL still slams into Scorp's bad side, making the armour buckle even further.

Grenado continues to do nothing, as ominously as possible. You pay it only the barest attention.

Mirriad's controller quickly determines that Cheatah XL's front end poses little threat to it, while Scorp's working pincer is uncomfortably close to its vulnerable parts, and the powerful tail laser looms dangerously overhead. Mirriad tries rolling around (2) to get a better angle on Scorp's weakest armour points, but when another camera data line is pulled free its controller thinks better. Instead, it fires what lasers it can (4) at Scorp's remaining semi-functional pincer, where it connects to Scorp's main body. There's nothing you can do about that with Scorp's tail laser but watch as some critical pincer components are converted into blue smoke.

Summary:
Scorp's pincers are out of commission, and it's left armour is badly damaged. It's front eyecams are still functional and its tail laser is fine. Tail laser battery is at 5 energy. With the pincers gone you find a way to reroute some power and get a bit more out of the generator! You saw something like that in a highlight video too.

Mirriad is in front of Scorp with most of a detached pincer inside it, with only a few working minilasers and a lot of its innards exposed by missing mirrors. Grenado remains fallen and jammed.

Cheatah XL is now on Scorp's damaged left side, with one side of its jaw somewhat jammed and only it's back left paw functional.

You can route power to:
- Defensive Maneuvers - twice as hard to hit (min die 3, once in a turn)
- Charge Tail Battery (any die, max charge 25, can be done more than once per turn)
- Pinpoint Pulse [target] for 1 damage (expend 3 charge, uses no dice, can be activated more than once in a turn)
- Megalase [target] for 8 damage (expend 20 charge, uses no dice)
- Defense Stance - Prepare laser to destroy incoming projectiles or do 2 damage to any weapon (expends 5 charge per actual hit if activated, uses no dice)

Prospective targets:
- Cheatah XL: Paw back-left, Mouth, Eye 2/2, Neck, Generator
- Grenado: Have a good shot at the generator as plenty of armour plates are missing
- Mirriad: Remaining lasers 5/8, Mirror 17/24, Eye 2/4, Generator
