Harry knows he's different. Animals are always frightened of him. A live wire is always running throughout his body making him become stronger on command and when he's emotional it burns like fire within him, causing dangerous and unnatural effects.

Now he has been introduced to the world of magic and he is still different from his peers around him. He has lots of questions and many mysteries to solve;

Why is he like this?

Why did Voldemort come after his family that night?

Why did he survive when no one else did?

AN: Hi everyone! This is my first fanfic so I hope you all enjoy, I've been only reading for too long so I felt it was finally time to try my hand at writing something that will be hopefully decent.

I'd like to thank my gf for reading over the first two chapters to make sure everyone is alright even though she doesn't like the fandoms. If anyone has any advice to do with the story that would be greatly appreciated :).

About the crossover; don't expect a full on fusion. I will only really be using stuff to do with Heroic Spirits and their mythology with a focus on the Arthurian/Western World side of things. Every other part of the setting will most likely use the Harry Potter World as its base.

Anyways hope you enjoy!!

'Ever since I've met Severus, life has been so exciting!! Doing magic with someone else is way better than on my own. Now that I know what it actually is that I'm doing, magic has become increasingly even easier to do; I even managed to turn all of the petals on a daisy different colours today.

I have been wondering though – if magic is real, are legends and myths too? I'll have to ask Sev tomorrow!'

A Forest Near Privet Drive
27th August 1991

'Fshhh'

A whisper of wind -

'CRACK!'

Birds squawked, taking flight as the trees around them lightly shook.

"HA-ha! Finally!" Shouted Harry, sporting a grin on his face as he took deep breaths to recover from the exertion of the day. Faint blue wisps of energy slowly faded from his outstretched fist as he raised it up to his face to wipe away the sweat gathering there.

He knew he could do it! He took a step back to admire the large crack running down the tall birch tree. Maybe he could try something else too, like turning a tree blue; just as he did to that teacher's hair once.

Looking up into the sky he sighed, it was starting to turn dark. He'd better head back. Turning from the tree he walked over to the open book he'd left lying next to his backpack. 'A Young Mage's Guide To Magic' it was titled. He should thank Professor McGonagoll the next time he saw her; he wouldn't mention using magic out of school though as apparently that was a big no-no, though he'd done it before and it was fine.

The book had been a great help in telling him how to properly guide the roiling magic inside of him. He usually just let the magic naturally flow throughout him whenever he needed to be a little stronger or faster. The 'burst' like the one he just performed had only ever happened uncontrollably when he'd been particularly angry, so managing to do it on purpose for once was a welcome change.

Putting away the book and lugging his bag upon his back he meandered out of the forest towards where he lived, thinking about what he could scrounge out of the cupboards to have for dinner; it wasn't like Aunt Petunia would make anything for him after all.

4 Privet Drive
1st September 1991

Looking over his room that he had lived in for the last few years Harry tried to spot anything that he hadn't yet packed for the journey, but it looked like he was in the clear. It was a good thing he had excellent vision. He checked himself in his cracked bedroom mirror, tealish green eyes staring back at him, he patted down his messy fringe trying to cover up his scar. Not that it would help much, considering how much of a commotion happened when the slight whisper of his presence spread throughout Diagon Alley when he got his school supplies.

"BOY HURRY UP! I'VE GOT PLACES TO BE YOU KNOW!" Came an increasingly annoyed Uncle Vernon from down the stairs.

Sighing, Harry shouldered his backpack filled with a few books and other items he might need for the day ahead , while dragging along his quite large and very heavy trunk.

-ba thump-

His heart thumped loudly in his ears and a fiery current of energy flowed throughout his body, allowing him to easily carry the trunk down the stairs with one arm. It was a wonder how kids were even supposed to carry all this weight. but as he thought about it a bit more, being careful not to trip, he realised they probably used a charm; he did read about magic that made objects lighter.

Continuing out the front door, as it seemed his uncle had left it open and was already waiting inside the car. Harry put the trunk in the boot and entered the front seat next to Vernon; not that he wanted to sit next to him but he also didn't want to be sequestered in the back.

"So boy, you're going to be gone all year?" Uncle Vernon said, not looking at Harry as he pulled out of the driveway, his hands gripping hard on the steering wheel.

"Yes Uncle Vernon, I'm allowed to come back for Christmas but I feel like it'd be better to stay at Hogwarts instead." He idly said, side-eyeing his uncle and noticing him having a slight flinch at the word 'Hogwarts'.

"Hm yes good idea boy best stay at that school, you are their problem now." Vernon's left hand unconsciously itched at his right that was still gripping the steering wheel, slightly pulling up the sleeve of his coat and revealing the start of a thick winding scar. Harry quickly turned his head away to look fully out of the window, feeling a conflicted mixture of anger and guilt.

Hopefully the ride wouldn't be too awkward.

Kings Cross Station
1st September 1991

Rolling his trunk along in the direction of the magic pillar between platforms 9 and 10 Harry had been keeping an eye out for any other magical seeming people going in the same direction as him, and the concentration of 'colourful' individuals had picked up quite a bit as he rounded the corner to his destination.

He didn't even need to look around that hard to find the pillar, as there was currently a queue of families taking turns running into the brick wall and disappearing. Looking around as he got in line he noticed that every ordinary person hurrying on their way didn't seem to perceive anything strange about the situation, and seemed to glide around the edges of the scene as if guided by an invisible wind.

It was nearly his turn to go through the wall, though first a large family of redheads were preparing to do so. As the final, tallest –of the probable brothers– went through the wall, he closed his eyes and took a deep breath. He could do it. He just had to get over the idea of running into a solid brick wall, y'know.

-ba thump-

His eyes snapped open as his heart thumped and just like everyone before him he ran into the wall! A slight static tingle went over him as he ran through, it felt familiar somehow. Once on the other side he looked over himself to make sure he was alright and to his relief he was.

"Well done!"A cheerful voice called out to him "Move out the way quickly now before someone comes through!" , as he then quickly moved out of the entrance zone. He placed the voice as a red haired man in a colourful mishmash of threadbare tweed, looking at him with a smile. It was the older man from the group of redheads in front of him.

"Thanks for the warning!" Harry sheepishly exclaimed, as he tried to peer over everyone to spot a more empty area, but the height of everyone and the sea of garish hats made that quite difficult.

"Haha, it's no worries, If you're looking for a clearer carriage look into some at the close end of the train near here. They're left for the First Years so won't be overwhelmed by all the older years. you should be fine, it seems like it'll be a smaller group of First Years this year…" The man trailed off and his cheerful disposition faltered slightly before brightening up again.

"Anyways if you need any help at Hogwarts find one of my boys, you can't miss the resemblance–"

"ARTHUR! Get over here and help out for Merlin's sake!" A shrill woman shouted over the crowd.

"Well that would be the wife. Have a good time at Hogwarts Harry." Arthur turned away with a smile, disappearing into the crowd towards the train.

"Hey wait! I didn't tell you my name… ah whatever" His shout trailed off. Damn he should've expected someone would recognise him, his arm reached up to pat down his fringe as he started to hurry along the train to find a free compartment.

Walking quickly, shouldering his way past families he caused a few different animals to squawk and hiss at him frightfully; it's not his fault okay most animals were frightened of him for some reason. He managed to clamber up into a carriage that was quite free of traffic. The one just further up ahead of him seemed way more busy with what looked like older students shoving each other trying to get in. If he had to do that next year he would be fine… probably. Luckily for him he managed to find an empty compartment easily. it was a bit weird actually, the inside of the train seemed bigger than how it appeared from outside. Moving into the compartment he quickly lifted his trunk up into the overhead storage area before finally flopping down onto the seat.

Snatching open his backpack he randomly grabbed one of the few books he had put in there and got settled for the journey. He hoped the journey would go okay.

Chapter 2: The Beginning of Freedom
'I can't believe I'm finally going to Hogwarts with Sev tomorrow! It's going to be so fun! I've already read all of the books for school, Severus looked at me a bit crazy when I mentioned that, but whateverrr.

I'm a bit sad Petunia isn't able to come with us though, she's become even more distant since I got my letter. I hope she warms up once I come back for Christmas. I miss her.'

Kings Cross Station,
Hogwarts Express
1st September 1991

'-use of swords and other weapons, whether enchanted or not, has died down dramatically since the Statute of Secrecy was implemented; though some small hobbyist duelling circuit's focused on their use do exist. Sometimes a challenger from one such group will make headlines after getting far in an international tournament.-'

'Knock Knock'

The train had just pulled out of Kings Cross Station when his reading was interrupted. Harry peered over his book, (The History of Weapons in Magical Society), towards the slowly opening compartment door. A red haired boy in clothes slightly too big for him, with an anxious expression was standing there.

"Er, sorry, you don't mind if I sit in here do you?" The boy nervously muttered. "Every other compartment is either too full for me or doesn't have anyone in it."

"Of course! Let me help you with your trunk." Smiling, Harry hopped over to the struggling boy, thinking about how this was the perfect chance to make a friend away from any influence the Dursley's might have.

"Oh thanks, I should be okay but if –oh blimey you're strong." Ignoring him, Harry grabbed hold of the trunk, smoothly lifting it up into the storage area. His hair parted slightly as he did so, revealing his scar and making the other boy's already wide eyes wider.

"Bloody 'ell you're Harry Potter!" He exclaimed, shock over his face. He dropped into his seat, and after taking a few seconds to calm he continued.

Sitting back down Harry sheepishly replied, "Yeah, I am…"

"Coooool," Ron said with a grin, quickly calming down as he noticed Harry's embarrassment. "Oh yeah my name's Ron by the way, Ron Weasley and uh, don't worry though, I won't bother you about anything. I hear enough about you from my sister anyways" He rolled his eyes fondly before kicking his feet up to lay upon the seat.

"Huh. No offence I don't think I know your sister. I might've talked to your Dad earlier though. Arthur, right?" With a slight expression of confusion Harry asked.

"Ohhh, you must've been the one my Dad was talking to earlier. He did say he was helping out someone coming through the barrier for the first time" Ron said in realisation, before he continued with slight mirth,"Well. You'll see what I mean next year about her."

Harry shoved his confusion about what was up with Ron's sister away to ask about something that was, in his mind, more important."Yeah, that was him. Say, do you know much about Hogwarts then? Having a big magical family and all. I've only read a bit about it in books this last month."

"Oh, well I don't know too much other than there's floating staircases that move around and how some of the teachers are a bit mad. Fred and George, my brothers, did tell me that the First Years have to fight a troll to get sorted, but I took that as a lie. The nutters." Ron explained. though he started to seem a bit annoyed once he mentioned his brothers.

Harry made a mental note to watch out for any moving stairways. He did want to know more about the houses though, he hadn't gotten far in 'Hogwarts: A History' as he was too focused on reading about magic.

"What house do you think you'll be in then?" Harry asked, "I heard a bit about them before from some blonde person when I was getting my robes. He seemed a bit snobbish though." thinking back to the moment, the blonde kid didn't seem too bad, but his father that came to collect him looked at him a bit funny and just caused Harry's instincts to flare.

"Ugh. They were Malfoy's I'd reckon, considering what my Dad has let slip sometimes. You'd be best to stay away from them if I were you. After all, they were on the wrong side of the war." said Ron in a troubled tone, scowling. Harry felt a shiver run down his back; he'd definitely keep an eye on Malfoy now. He should probably do some research into what happened during the war that he apparently put a stop to. Pausing to let the moment pass, Ron continued,"Anyways I'd probably go in Gryffindor to be honest, my whole family went in there. I wouldn't mind going somewhere different from my brothers though. It doesn't matter if we're in different houses though we can still be friends. If you want to, that is." Cheeks running red as he mumbled the last part.

Warmth flowed through Harry and he smiled as he said, "I'd love that!" Ron smiled in relief. He also started to shuffle around in his pockets for something.

"Here it is! Wanna play some exploding snap? It's easy trust me, it will make the journey go way quicker." He said with excitement while waving a slightly charred and scruffed deck of what looked like playing cards. Harry nodded. After all, he wanted to get to Hogwarts as soon as possible and learn some magic!

Somewhere Near Hogwarts
Hogwarts Express
1st September 1991

"I can't believe you bought so much from the trolley Harry, by Merlin you ate so much, do you have a bottomless stomach or something?" Ron slurred, groaning around on a wrapper and crumb covered floor, as he struggled to get back up.

Harry though felt fine, he was usually ravenous for food and never really stopped feeling hungry. He giggled in amusement down at Ron whilst reaching into his backpack,"Well I had to try at least everything once, I've never had any of it before." He glanced at the darkening sky outside. "We should probably get changed though; it's getting dark out so we'll most likely be at Hogwarts soon."

"Ugh yeah you're right, lemme just lay here a bit longer." Muttered Ron, who was still groaning on the floor.

Harry rolled his eyes and started getting changed. Soon after Ron got up and slowly did as well.

"Do we really need to wear these hats? They seem like they'd poke someone's eye out." Questioned Harry as he eyed the item on the other boy's head suspiciously.

Ron looked at Harry, smirking,"Don't worry mate, if that happens I'm sure they'll be able to fix your eyes right up." He then looked down to the side.

Following his gaze, Harry looked at the rat Ron had bought out earlier that had just kind of been frozen still the whole time, not moving. "Tch, I'm pretty sure Fred and George did something to Scabbers. He's not usually like this." Ron muttered in a frustrated tone. Harry himself felt a bit worried too. He knows he usually has a 'frightful' affect on animals, but nothing like this. Maybe it was the rats' old age, Ron did say it was quite old.

"Maybe you should ask a teacher in Hogwarts. There should be someone that can treat injured animals right?"

"Yeah that's probably a good idea," As Ron went to pick up Scabbers the train started to slow down as well.

"Oh looks like we're here. I can't wait to see what Hogwarts looks like!" stated Harry, excitement in his voice. He reached up to get his trunk, but nothing was there. He patted around the area above worriedly.

Ron piped up behind him,"I wouldn't worry about that mate: the Hogwarts Elves would've taken our stuff into the castle by now." Harry's head shot around. this was the first time he'd heard of Elves existing.

"Elves are real?!" He exclaimed in wonder.

"Well house elves are real -they help around homes and such. Most rich people like the Malfoy's have one." Bemused, Ron added, "I don't think any other type exists; apart from in legends and stories though."

'Knock Knock Knock'

A rapid knock interrupted them, and the door flew open. Behind it was a young girl with unbelievably frizzy brown hair and a raised eyebrow.

She spoke up in a hurried tone, "Good, at least you're ready. Come on then we need to get off the train." As quick as she came, she spun around and left.

Harry and Ron looked at each other, shrugging in bewilderment before hurrying off as well.

A loud voice boomed over them as soon as they stepped off the train and out into the chilly night. "-RST YEARS, FIRST YEARS, over here now quickly!" The boys caught sight of the giant of a man waving over towards them, he continued in a hurried but cheerful tone. "Come on now, onto the boats ye' all go"

Seeing as everyone else was getting into the boats, Ron and Harry quickly followed, managing to find one with enough space for them. Two girls were already in the boat, one with brown hair tied into pigtails and one with a somehow darker shade of black hair than Harry.

"Hi there! I'm Tracy and this is my friend Daphne, she doesn't talk much so don't worry if she doesn't say anything haha." Came the cheerful voice of the brown haired girl. Daphne, who was sitting opposite Harry, rolled her eyes; they were a shade of pale blue.

Harry replied with a smile, "Hiya, I'm Harry this is Ron, nice to meet you both!" Ron did a slight wave at his name. Both the girls intensely looked at Harry , their eyes darting to his forehead where his scar was just slightly visible through his fringe, they both let out a slight gasp. Daphne tried to hide her reaction composing herself quickly, as she did she also preemptively poked Tracy stopping what looked like a shout.

As Tracy flinched back, rubbing at her side, Daphne quietly spoke up. "Well it's nice to meet the both of you too." The boats started moving as she finished and the giant's accented voice started ringing out over the collection of children,

"Alright now you youngsters, keep your limbs inside yer boats so you don't fall. If you do, don't worry my friend Gary will help you out." A large shadow suddenly moved underneath the boats, but for some reason steering slightly clear of Harry's boat. The commotion caused someone to scream and fall out of their boat. Luckily a large green tentacle shot up from the water and grabbed them before placing the now very terrified child back in their boat. "See now you'll all be fine ye 'ave nothing to worry 'bout; we'll be in the castle in no time"

The boats started to speed up, as they got to the middle of the lake the castle came into view no longer hidden by fog that previously obscured it. He was filled with wonder as he saw it for the first time; it was beautiful. A strange tingle that he had felt before, at the platform entrance, suddenly came over him. This time it felt stronger, it felt like being dunked in an ice water bath.

-ba thump-

His magic thumbed through his body in response causing what felt like fire to flow through his body, he flinched in surprise.

As he did so he felt a hand on his shoulder, Ron was looking at him in slight concern.

"You alright there mate?" He whispered.

Recovering quickly and noticing no one else saw, Harry whispered back, "Yeah thanks, I'm fine, just felt a chill." Ron nodded and let his shoulder go with one last reassuring squeeze before looking back at the castle.

After admiring the view of the castle for a few minutes they arrived at a large mossy dock that was lit by some blue floating flames. Standing upon the dock was Professor McGonagall in a fancy green dress robe and witches hat. Harry smiled and waved at her. She did a slight nod in return, her lips pulling into a small smile.

As soon as they docked all of them scampered off the boats, glad to be on dry land again and away from the giant tentacle creature. Professor McGonagall turned towards the giant, who was in the process of getting off his larger boat, and in a warm tone, "Thank you Hagrid for guiding them safely. Make sure you don't arrive at the feast in the middle of the sorting ceremony."

"Ah ye' know it was no problem, and I'll start making my way over now heh." Hagrid replied as he lumbered off into the castle.

As he walked off the Professor turned towards them "Quickly now children, no tardiness and follow me!" The First Years hurried along to keep pace with her quick strides that were leading them deep into the castle. The patter of their shoes echoed through the halls until they came to a stop in front of a large wooden door. Harry examined the door and saw strange writing glowing with a faint silvery blue glow that flowed all over it in strange swirling patterns. Every other child also had a visage of wonder as they looked around and saw the ethereal magic that seemed to emanate from every object of the castle. After giving them a slight time to look around, McGonagall's stern voice rumbled over them, silencing any chatter.

"Now children, take one last look at yourself to make sure you are presentable and take a deep calming breath." She made the motions of breathing in and out as she did. She was about to continue when a sea of eclectic voices interrupted her. Harry turned around to see a group of transparent flying people.

"-Now yes of course I remember when that king came here to go through our libraries looking for anything to do with Arthur-"
"Say Baron fancy doing a haunting at a local muggle village, could be just like the old times!"
"-I remember when a good old wyvern hunt was-"

'POP'

A loud weird sounding pop echoed through the entrance hall and what he now realised were probably ghosts quieted down seeming to realise what was happening.

"Oh so so sorry Professor didn't realise it was that time of year again. Time goes by so quickly, you know. It is excellent to see all these young faces, I hope the sorting goes swimmingly and I'll be sure to see some of you later!" Apologetically exclaimed a large humble looking ghost in a monk's attire as he smiled down at everyone. "We'd best all be off then toodaloo~" The monk waved farewell and started to fly off, the rest of the ghosts following.

As they did a singular ghost was unnervingly staring at Harry, his expression was muddled with a look of despair and shock . He was wearing what looked like armour barely hanging onto its last thread, missing sections in many places, an empty sword sheath at his side. A young woman of a ghost paused briefly beside the figure to whisper something in his ear that knocked him out of his stupor. He took one last glance at Harry then sped along towards the other ghosts.

"We're already late enough as is, come now children line up nice and orderly." Professor McGonagoll uttered in a hurried tone a nearly hidden frown on her face. Everyone was quick to line up, mostly as they wanted to sit down and eat. Well Harry did anyway.

The Professor twitched her right hand causing a refined wand to appear, glancing back to see everyone ready she flicked her hand. The still doors started to glide open. As the other side revealed itself Harry let out a quiet 'wow'.

He glanced around the enormous room he and his fellows were being led into. 4 long tables ran most of its length each filled with hundreds of students in different colour uniforms on each. At the end of the room on a raised table he could spot a diverse group of older figures; he spotted Hagrid shuffling his way into his considerably bigger seat at the end of the table. His gaze continued to the walls around him, glancing at the large stained glass windows at the sides of the room showing a variety of different creatures, magic wielders and knights in a large array of animated scenes. Finally he looked straight up seeing the clearest twinkling night sky he had ever seen; everything was so amazing.

Centering himself he came back into the moment, the frizzy haired girl from the train was in front of him muttering what he realised to be whole paragraphs from 'Hogwarts: A History'. Professor McGonagoll had
continued forwards towards a small wooden stall with a large frayed hat on it. Taking out a large gilded scroll from underneath the hat she cleared her throat.

"The sorting ceremony will now begin. Please remain quiet. Hat, you may begin." She turned towards the large hat and small groans could be heard throughout the room. Harry wondered why she was talking to the hat but then it suddenly started talking in a gruffled voice.

"Well well, another lot huh. Lemme sing a song to mark this occasion." Then it started singing.

Harry didn't have this scenario in mind when he was thinking about coming to a magic school. Sure he knew he'd see some weird and mind-boggling stuff, after all the some of the bits he read in the magic books mentioned some strange things but they never mentioned a magic singing hat. The singing wasn't that bad though, at least not as bad as Aunt Petunia's shrill voice whenever she sang.

As the Hats last note to ended a smattering of claps echoed through the hall, the loudest being from the pair of red haired boys on the red table and an old professor with the longest beard he'd ever seen who was sat in the centre of the Professors table. Professor McGonagall then spoke up as the claps petered off, unrolling the scroll as she did.

"Now I will say your names in alphabetical order, you will come up and sit on the stool as I place the Sorting Hat upon your head and allow it to sort you into your future house. Let us begin, Hannah Abbot." Harry watched as a small freckled blond haired girl walked up and sat under the hat, after a few seconds it shouted.

"Hufflepuff!" The yellow table let out a huge cheer welcoming their new member as she ran up to them.

The sorting continued, with each person taking around 5-10 seconds. Harry started to pay attention when the frizzy hair girl, Hermione, was called up. The hat was on her head for at least a minute, maybe two before it suddenly shouted.

"Slytherin!" There were a few quiet gasps from the room before a few claps started that quickly died down as the girl walked stone faced and confident to the end of the table and sat down. The other first years there shuffled slightly away apart from Tracy who shuffled closer with a smile. Professor McGonagoll spoke up again calling the next person, which happened to be Daphne who also went to Slytherin.

As the sorting went on he kept half an ear out for his name and other on what the muttering older students were saying.

"This year's a bit small aint it?"
"Well you know the war and all that-"
"-Potter is in this year isn't he? Do you see-"
"Did you see that Muggleborn go into Slytherin? I hope she will be okay in th-"

"Harry Potter." His name rang out throughout the hall silencing any conversations. Ron patted his back with a whispered 'Good Luck'. Harry took a deep steadying breath and squared his shoulders. Not focusing on anything but moving forward, even as the volume of the hall suddenly shot up. As he made it to the stool and sat down the Professor gave him a kind smile and a nod. The Hat then flopped down over his head and blocked his vision. An old voice suddenly spoke in his mind.
'Well what do we have here, you're an interesting one aint you lad.' The Hat's voice echoed in his head. 'You certainly take after both your parents don't you?'

Harry spoke up for the first time, eagerly wanting to hear about his parents, "What were my parents like? How am I like the-"

'Slow down a bit ha,' interrupting Harry's question the Hat let out a chuckle. 'You're parents well, I wasn't surprised when Albus told me they got together I'll tell you that. They were both determined and stubborn, but very smart, especially your mother. You take more after your father though he had a very instinctive way in how he thought. Now where to put you. You don't have any preference do you? You just want unhindered freedom in life, I can see why you'd want that. Hmm you would do well as a snake, you would be great in fact, but well you can't stand the kind of mental games they play there you're a bit too honest and forward for that.' Harry let out a slight half-hearted grumble at that.'The badgers and ravens would give you a steady time here but that's not what you need, your Dragons-Blood needs some excitement therefore the only true answer is-'

"GRYFFINDOR!" The Sorting Hat was yanked off his head as thunderous cheers, hollers and clapping rang throughout the hall. Slightly confused by the Hats last sentence Harry still made sure to remember the words 'Dragon-Blooded.

He stepped forwards towards the Gryffindor table, smiling wide as he sat down. Harry was met with pats on the back and numerous welcomes. Was it weird that it already felt like home to him?

'Hogwarts is better than I ever thought it would be, it's so big as well! I wonder how they hide it from everyone. The Library is the best one I've ever been to, me and Sev have been looking through as many different magical fields as we can between our differing lessons.

It's quite difficult to search for specific books though the library is just so big. If only they had a searchable catalogue like what some of the big non-magical libraries are getting these days…'

Charms Classroom, Hogwarts
8th September 1991

Excited chattering filled the hallway before the charms classroom. Harry himself was buzzing because they were finally going to be taught magic!

The previous week Professor McGonagoll had guided the Gryffindor first years around the castle, showing them where their future lessons would be held as well as other spots such as the library and Quidditch stadium. They were also given introductory lessons for each of their subjects. Ron's brothers were right though, some of the teachers were barmy. Now though was their first actual lesson which would be with Professor Flitwick, who had given Harry quite a good first impression.

Suddenly the noise started to die down as the students noticed the classroom door begin to slowly emit bright sparkles around the edges. As the rate of sparkles increased the door began to fade in and out of existence until suddenly with a wet-sounding pop it disappeared.

A cheerful voice then came within, "Hello students! Please make your way in and take a seat."

Harry stepped into the classroom, sharing a grin with Ron. Taking a seat he once again admired the countless moving pictures that decorated the walls showing snippets of the small Professor's history as a duelist. Looking upon the desk he noticed a large white feather in front of him and every other student, inferring it had to do with today's lesson he eagerly leaned forward as Professor Flitwick spoke.

"Seeing as you are all now settled, we will get started. As you all undoubtedly know I have the honour of beginning your practical education here at Hogwarts and getting to teach you your first spell, luckily I start with my favourite Ravenclaws and Gryffindors this year!" He clapped his hands with a smile to the classroom before continuing," Now today you will be learning the Levitation Charm, a handy charm that will allow you to move objects around at will, a multipurpose spell which will serve you faithfully for years to come I say. To perform this spell simply move your wand with a 'swish' and a 'flick' while saying the words, Win-GAR-dee-um Leh-vee-OH-sa. As you perform this spell on the feather in front of you, remember to intently picture the effect of levitation you wish to achieve whilst letting your inner magic flow naturally through your wand to manifest your intent and will upon the world. I believe all of you will achieve this feat by the end of the term, let us begin." The students were all riled and ready by the time the Professor finished explaining.

Holly wand now in hand, Harry started to focus intently on the feather. He blocked out overlapping voices of his class and started to picture the feather floating in his mind. As he performed the motions and incanted the words, (a swish, a flick, 'Wingardium Leviosa'), he touched that ever-present thrum in the back of his mind and pulled it through his body and into his wand.

-Ba Thump-

Broiling fire ran through his veins.

'CRRRRRACKK'

The sound of wood being torn and broken echoed through the room like an ancient oak being split by lightning. Screams rang out as a wide part of the table underneath Harry's feather was torn from its base and started to float up in the air.

Seasoned eyes of a duelist flickered over the room, wand instinctively twitching to cover the students around him in an ethereal shield. His eyes looked into ones of green, slightly different to the ones he last saw so long ago; (of a brilliant student, a genius, a friend). His wand was already partway through the motions as his voice commanded.

"Finite Incantatem." The dispelling charm washed over the room causing some barely floating feathers to drop but as it encountered the overcharged spell of the student it faced resistance. Flitwicks eyes widened and he could feel the power behind the spell, it was…. Overwhelming. He tugged deep on his magic causing it to surge and try to break the bonds making up the student's spell but it simply seemed to slide off, he shouted out to Harry realising that the only way to force the spell to stop was for the student to cancel it himself.

"Harry release the spell quickly now!" The Professor shouted urgently.

Hearing Professor Flitwick's words and seeing the slight chaos that had overtaken the room, Harry pulled his magic back. The broken table dropped to the floor.

'Clapclapclap'

The quiet students turned their attention from the now floor-bound table to the Professor standing beside it.

"Oh my, Oh my never in my years teaching have I seen such a destructive first casting, how exciting!" Said Professor Flitwick with a wide smile, before continuing in a gentle tone, " Well done Harry, though next time do remember to let your magic gently glide through your body towards your wand, there's no need to force it. Remember this students, your magic will always naturally flow towards your bonded wand when casting. Now with that excitement over, let's continue!" With a twirl of his wand the broken table part seamlessly reattached itself and disorganised feathers glided to their original positions.

Harry felt a pat on his back. Turning his head he saw Ron with a massive grin.

"That was wicked!"

Library, Hogwarts
10th September 1991

Muttering under his breath in annoyance Harry rapidly scribbled out the last of the potion notes. The only reason he was doing this was because of that awful Professor who had hammered him with relentless questions for absolutely no reason! He had gone back through his potion book for this year and found the material all the way at the back of the book, it's not his fault he hadn't gotten that far, he'd been busy reading the books more focused on practical magic.

The lesson had gotten even worse when Snape paired him with that Granger girl who wanted everything to be in exacting perfection when making the potion. Sure the potion had turned out so well that the Professor had looked like he had sucked a lemon when it was given to him. But still, she could've been nicer about it.

Done with his self-prescribed task Harry shovelled his supplies into his bag and went deeper into the library. He'd been much too busy recently and was quite excited for the chance to finally do some personal reading.

As he walked through the quiet library, only slightly filled by those who were overly studious, the natural light of the sun dimmed as dusk started to settle in. Above him, small pale yellow balls of magical light began to slowly appear throughout the library to halt the encroaching darkness. Softly strolling he came to the aisle of books that called to him, he peered at the colourfully bound books. He moved past the sections containing the Akki, Boggart and Cat Sìth. For the only thing on his mind were Dragons.

However, on looking at the 'D' section he felt a slight bit of trepidation as comparing it to the other alphabetical sections it seemed quite a bit larger. Flickering his eyes over books such as, (How the Founder Effect Shaped Today's Dragons, and 'A look into the Mystery of Red Welsh Dragons'), Harry was at a bewildered loss at how he was supposed to search through all these books.

An unimpressed voice suddenly came from behind him. "Looking for something are you?" Turning around in surprise Harry saw Hermione standing there arms crossed with various books and slight bags under her eyes.

He replied somewhat defensively, "Well excuse me if I find it hard to find books in this place, there's just so much here." In return Hermione let out a 'tut' before manoeuvring the few books she had into one arm and using the other to offer Harry a small brown book.

"This is a Personal Library Catalogue, PLC for short, it can find and guide you towards any book in the library. Just tap your wand on the PLC's front cover while closed and say the specific title or subject you wish to find. Then open the book, it will list down what books match what you want, tap with your wand again on any of the titles and it will tell you what section of the library it is in while also making the book glow to your eyes." She impatiently explained.

"Eer, thanks? How did you-" Harry's reply was interrupted mid sentence.

"I asked Madam Pince if there was a way to search for books and she gave me a copy. Now please use it quickly. I'll need it back, you can ask for a copy afterwards." Hermione cut in.

Staring at her in resignation Harry took the closed book and tapped his wand on its golden filigree cover while saying, "Dragon Blood".

The book faintly glowed blue in response. Taking that as confirmation and opening the book he was met with a page of various titles. Looking back up at an increasingly impatient Hermione he sighed. He might as well get started with the first one then, (A Treatise on the 12 uses of Dragon Blood by A. Dumbledore).

DADA Classroom, Hogwarts
12th September

"Tch. I can't believe we've got to be with this lot again." An aggravated Ron muttered to Harry as he nodded in the direction of the Slytherins standing on the opposing side of the hallway.

Harry rolled his eyes and replied with a yawn. "They're not all that bad, y'know. Anyways, this is our last lesson this week, just soldier through it and you'll be fine."

"Yeah I know, some of them are pricks though." Ron sighed in resignation before gaining a cheeky grin and continuing, "Hey maybe we'll learn a sick duelling spell today that you do your thing on and cast at Malfoy."

Harry let a chuckle out at the joke. Not that he would do that, it'd probably tear Malfoy's arm off if he tried doing that. It was a good thing Flitwick had given him the advice he did, as he was able to cast the spells now without overpowering them. His thoughts were interrupted by a harried shouting coming from down the hall.

"S-so sorry children, had a b-bit of a run in with a pesky s-spectre." Stuttered a slightly unkempt Professor Quirrell as he rushed towards the classroom doors. He flicked his wand causing them to swing open before continuing, "C-come follow me now and t-take a seat."

Some of the first years shared a confused giggle as they all rushed in. Upon entering Harry wrinkled his nose as at the smell of garlic wafting from every corner of the room. He looked around in bewilderment, as he took a seat next to Ron at the front, around the room he spotted several hanging bundles of garlic as well as what seemed like at the openings of the room lines of white powder. He felt the decor of the room was a bit grizzly, with anatomical dissection pictures of what looked like various humanoid creatures. There were also several bones, horns, feathers and other magical creature parts placed along shelves or pinned in frames.

"Well it's a bit weird in here isn't it mate," Ron said to his side looking a bit wary as he looked around.

'Cough' "Uh-huh, you got that right." Coughed Harry. He looked up at the Professor who had his back to the class as he flipped through a book before tapping a page with his wand and flicking it to the blackboard behind him. Chalk suddenly floated up as he closed the book and began writing as he turned back to the class.

"W-welcome everyone. T-today for your lesson in Defence Against the D-dark Arts we would usually start with the most i-important part of defence, Identification. H-however I find that some invigorative s-spellcasting will always get students interested and ready to l-learn more." The Professor looked at the growing grins in class before continuing. "S-so today I will be teaching all of you t-the Sneezing Jinx, a m-mild jinx at best that causes the target to uncontrollably sneeze, excellent at stopping a p-persons' incantation." Professor Quirrell then moved to the side, revealing the blackboard that now had the incantation and wand movement for the spell written upon it.

"I-I now will now choose one student from each h-house to show off the spell to their peers." Harry sat up in his seat as Quirrell scanned the students, some such as Hermione and Malfoy had immediately shot their hands up. A strange painful itch started to blossom on his scar, as he reached up to scratch it the Professor spoke up in a strangely eager sounding stutter-less voice.

"What a room of eager students we have, how delightful. I feel like the two best students for this task are Mr Potter and Miss Greengrass. If you both would please come up?" Ignoring the itch Harry stood up as Ron gave him a nod of good luck. He made his way up the classroom with Daphne to stand with the Professor in the clear rectangular zone that was in front of his desk.

Grinning, the Professor looked at them both with a gleam in his eye as he instructed them both. "Lovely, would you both please stand on the opposing black crosses here and there please." Harry and Daphne moved to the spots, both their wands in hand as they turned to look at each other with a narrowed look of determination in both their eyes.

"I'm sure you have already both got the jinx memorised if what I've heard from the other professors is true. Mr Potter you will go first, you may now begin."

Harry nodded and took a deep calming breath. His vision tunnelled onto Daphne who stood poised and unfazed. He raised his wand. With a clear voice he spoke the incantation, letting his magic naturally glide through to his wand.

'Fzztp!'

A faint yellow light tinged brown beamed from his wand, hitting Daphne square in the chest. She flinched back and her head snapped down.

'ACHO!'
Groans and giggles were heard around the room. Harry wiped some sweat from his brow, glad his worries about accidentally overpowering the spell didn't happen.

Professor Quirrell spoke up, smiling at Harry and then nodding to Daphne. "Well done Mr Potter. Miss Greengrass you may begin."

Putting the fancy napkin back in her pocket, Daphne looked at Harry, red with slight embarrassment before narrowing her eyes in retributive anger. Gracefully she went through the motions before shouting the incantation. A faint warning prickled inside his mind, but he was too slow to react.

'Fzztp!'

The same light that left his wand flew at him, hitting him on the shoulder. But as he looked at it impact him. It just… washed over him like a stream against a boulder. Nothing happened.

He looked up, Daphne was looking at him in confusion and hurt pride. His scar ached as he looked into Professor Quirrell's eyes which were filled with a gleam he didn't like the look of before the Professor suddenly lost it and gained a slouch before addressing the class.

"W-well done students, e-excellent show. P-please go and take your seats so I can start teaching you on how to identify a d-dark wizard." He stammered.

Filled with confusion Harry sat down next to Ron. What had just happened?
