[ ] Visit Doof's Childhood Home
If there was one thing you'd have to avoid while on this trip, it was your horrible old childhood home. You idly wondered if the place had burned to the ground in your absence but you doubt you'd ever get that lucky.
"Where are we going?" Norm asked cheerfully. The Drusselsteinian peasants around him were giving him a wide berth, many of them backing into doorways and closing windows as you came down the street. Monogram actually winced as a woman got one look at his green outfit and scampered down an alleyway instead of having to deal with him.
"Great googly moogly, are they always like this?"
"Yeah, pretty much. They don't like outsiders. Or insiders. Or much of anything, really, outside of doonkleberries, lawn gnomes, spitzenhounds, and a rousing game of Poke the Goozim With A Stick." you explained, passing into the outer reaches of the town, hoping to cut down on your travel time to Castle Doofhawk. You rounded one last corner and… "...aaaaaawwwww crap."
It seems like the decades you spent in the States did quite a lot to your memory of the old place. In your efforts to avoid it you actually ended up walking right up to your childhood home.
"Where are we, sir?" Norm asked, the chipper grin never leaving his face.
Well. You already stuck your foot in this and could hardly pull back now. "This is the home of my awful parents! Wow, it's looking considerably more ramshackle than I remember!"
A mustachioed man in a mismatched ugly viking helmet poked his head out and swore at you in German. "Bah! Another American! Go away back to the country with my failure son!"
"But he's…" Monogram starts to say.
"I am referring to Roger!"
"Roger?!" you and Francis ask at the same time, exchanging a brief look and shudder of revulsion that you're on the same wavelength even temporarily.
"If that failure could not even hold a position of power, then he is not worth my time. Now begone!" he slams the door in your face. Oh well, you've had that happen dozens of times before.
This thing with Roger, though, you...have no idea how to respond to this! Nothing in your life has prepared you for this moment, what should you do?!
[ ] Think about reconciling with Roger. (Sure, Roger might've had it easy for most of his life, but in the end he had the same awful parents as you did. Maybe you can empathize over this?)
[ ] Think about rubbing this in Roger's face. (Roger always has been a smug jerk, acting condescending to you nearly every time you interacted in the past. Now you can have the high ground for once!)
Francis has a faraway look in his eyes… wait! You recognize this! "What is it?"
"Nothing! It just…. You reminded me of… the Academy." the long-distant look returns to his eyes.
"Oh! Oh, you're having a backstory, aren't you?!"
"What?!"
"I can tell! Come on, now you have to share your traumatic backstory, that's just how it's done!"

Success!
"Oh, fine. I've already heard everything about yours." He clears his throat. "Back in Britain, in the days of my youth…"
"Hey!"
"Cut it, you! It's my backstory and that's how I'm starting it!"
"Fine, fine, go ahead…" you grumble.
"Ever since I was a young boy, I always wanted to join the circus as an acrobat, but my father insisted that I follow in his footsteps in 'fighting evil'. I even asked for a circus pony for Christmas when I was five, and Santa never bothered bringing one!" You nodded, knowing as well as Francis did that Santa was real, no matter what other adults might say.
"At a young age my father... I think it was my father, he always denied it due to security reasons... forced me to move off to… the Academy. When I said I didn't want to go, he said 'I'm not your father and it's already been decided.', and I never saw him again. Oh, the years at the Academy were miserable. Me and Ray Liotta were roommates for the fifth year, and ever since I did him that favor he said he'd owe me someday…"
You listened to Francis talk for a few more minutes before you realized that he had a tragic backstory too! Sure, it wasn't quite as childhood-encompassing as yours, and he wasn't abandoned to be raised by wild ocelots, but getting disowned couldn't be easy. You should know, you've gone through it yourself! At the end of it, you have… you'd hesitate to call it an 'understanding', but maybe a better grasp of what each other are like?
Oh well. Your awful parents' home lies behind you and the fields of Drusselstein in front. What will you do?
