Disney+'s WandaVision

The first fully integrated MCU show starts in a few hours, figured it could use a dedicated thread, with some trailers for those yet unaware.

I admit I wasn't too hyped for this as it seemed like a House of M show where Wanda being crazy is a big twist for non-comic readers, but a recent statement from the showrunner they are planning to stay far away from that and instead make it a hero-building journey for Wanda who will team up with Dr. Strange in his next film as well as introduce the new SWORD organisation and a now-adult Monica Rambeau.

Sword seems like a weird thing to introduce for a series focused on Wanda and Vision. Being the space borne side of Shield and all, neither of whom touching on that aspect of the setting. Maybe they'll be changing it's focus.

That was a great start.

Ok, so I'm pretty sure that Ep 1 is based on the Dick Van Dyke show. I enjoyed the surface level sitcom episode.

Only a couple of weird things here.

Vision has the Mind Stone in his forehead.

Not sure if the date is something important, but there's Wanda and Vision having no memory of their past, or how they got here.

There's Vision having no idea what his company does, and the coworker doesn't know either.

And then there's Mrs. Hart remaining eerily calm, looking at Wanda, and saying 'stop it' over and over as Mr. Heart chokes on a sausage, with a ticking clock in the background.

And lastly there's someone who works for Sword, indicated by the symbol on the monitor, watching the show Wanda and Vision are in.

Oh, and I liked the commercial about the toaster made by Stark Industries :D

I believe Ep 2 is based on Bewitched. Another fun episode on the surface.

Way more weird stuff here.

Wanda finding a toy helicopter, the first thing in the show that's in color, with the Sword symbol on it, which disappears when Agnes shows up.

There's Agnes again talking about her likely non-existent husband.

Everyone saying 'For the children' in eerie synch.

Wanda saying that she doesn't mean anyone any harm, and Dottie saying she doesn't believe Wanda.

The radio freaking out and someone cutting in asking Wanda who's doing this to her over and over.

Dottie cutting herself when the radio shorts out, and her blood being red.

Wanda suddenly being pregnant when she gets up from the couch.

That beekeeper with the Sword logo on their outfit climbing up out of the sewer. I paused the ep when they looked at Wanda and Vision to try to see if i could make out who's inside, and i can't be sure, but it kinda looks like Paul Bettany.

Wanda saying no and rewinding the episode :o

Vision's head being in color after he and Wanda kiss, and then the rest of the world getting color, ending with the rest of Vision's body and Wanda.

The Strucker watch commercial, complete with a Hydra symbol on it, was great too :D

Can't wait for more!

I will admit it was getting a little hard to get through the pure sitcom bits, even if it's intentional cringe it's still cringe, but it does make the moments where things go 'off-script' far more creepy and disturbing.

I dug the cinematography change between the first episode's early-mid 50's I Love Lucy to the 2nd episode being more like early 60's Psycho with the upclose camera angles.
Personally hoping HYDRA won't be heavily involved/the culprits as hinted at by the Strucker watch commercial and just Wanda's memories influencing the commercials like the Stark toaster, I'd prefer a fresh start and new antagonists.

I actually really like the pure sitcom parts, but I watched a lot of old sitcoms on TVLand when I was a kid.

A lot of that is just a reflection of the change in style between 50s and 60s sitcoms. One direct nod to that is bringing the beds together as during the 50s couples on TV had to be shown sleeping in separate beds, often with a night stand between them, it wasn't until the Addams Family in 1962 that a couple would be shown sharing a bed.

First commercial involved Stark Industries, the shell that killed Wanda and Pietro's parents was made by Stark Industries. Second commercial break involves Strucker, who gave them their powers. Will the next one be Ultron themed?

It was actually the second, the first was the blinking red light on the stark industries toaster ad, which I assume is significant, but I can't imagine how

Edit: by the way, was anyone able to recognize the voice trying to communicate with her over the radio?

Edit2: speculation that's Jimmy Woo is floating around

who's the voice on the radio in WandaVision? Well, it sounds a lot like Randall Park, who played FBI Agent Jimmy Woo in Ant-Man and the Wasp and who is confirmed to be part of the WandaVision cast

'WandaVision': Who's the Voice on the Radio?

Who's that mysterious voice on the radio in the second episode of Marvel's Disney+ series WandaVision? We think we know.

Some people on TVTropes have suggested that the ominous beeping and red light on the Stark Industries toaster may have been evocative of the Stark Industries bomb that destroyed Wanda's childhood home.

A fan has assembled a trailer from the next episode from already existing footage from the teasers, trailers, and the making-of featurette:

It appears that we'll be getting more footage of SWORD's view of things (or at least the start of it) this episode...

So far, we appear to have had these influences:
  • The 50's - The Dick Van Dyke Show (the house set is a near reproduction of it)
  • The 60's - Bewitched (the animated opening, the set design (another near-reproduction!), and the transition to color)
  • The 70's - Personally, I think it's being influenced by The Brady Bunch, the set design looks like it was lifted from the show
The 80's will probably pull from shows like Family Ties and Full House (though they may forego directly riffing the latter, given one of their leads is related to two of the leads from that show. :) )
I'm not sure what they'll be pulling from for the 90's, 00's, and 10's, given my sitcom watching fell away once I entered college in the early 1990's.

Is it bad that I actually want a sitcom about an android and a witch marrying each other and pretending to be a normal couple now?

What the fuck did I just saw?

A gay sitcom about a witch and a robot living the American dream as a quirky yet happy couple in Smalltown USA where no̴͇̝̬͔̜͕̰͚̙̓̿̈̎ẗ̷̢̠̠̰͍̺̲͕̙͇̮͇̜̩͇́̾̀̊̊̊̾́̂͊̉̚̚͝h̵̡̺̬̪͓̯̝̦̟̀̓̏͋̿̀̿̒̚ỉ̶̡͈̪̞ͅn̸̡̥̼͍̈́̎̈́̈̓̓̏̊͗̔͛͘͘͠g̷̨̧̧̜̼̮̙̠̱͉͙̺͋̈́͂͋͒̉̑̑̍̔̍̍̚ ̶̧̟̺̿̊̋̉̈͑͝į̷̢̳̙͉̝͚͎̥͎̠̖͉̻͙̑̈́̾̌̓̇̓̒̀͐͂̐̓̚s̸̢̡̡̛̰͈̺̪͉̱̠̅̔̈́̎̅ ̶̞̂̐̎́͐͒̅̉́̐̊͛w̸̻͈͐͘r̷̨͖̀́͑͐̍̀̍̈̕̕͘͠ó̴̘͕͕̆͒̋͘͝͝ṋ̵̛̍́̿̈̿̑̏͛͛̅̾̒̃g̸͚̳͇̳̱̞̞̠̯͉͉͉̺̭͌̔͊͗̏̄͝...

Yeah, the fact that he's repeating "Wanda, who's doing this to you?", plus Mrs. Hart's "Stop it" and Wanda "breaking character" to rewind time pretty clearly points towards this being a something like a House of M situation - Wanda's having a mental breakdown at some SWORD facility while imagining her "perfect life" with Vision, when she's really breaking down reality and trapping the staff her delusion.

Episode 3

More HYDRA references, the Twins are here, the Westviewers actually seem aware of their situation and Monica Rambeau got outed as a SWORD agent and expelled to the encampment surrounding the town that is covered by a forcefield dome

Damn that was good!

I loved that hard cut when Vision was about to realize what's going on.

And the mention of Ultron from Geraldine :o

A few interesting things I noticed:
Vision's other friend holding a newspaper that kinda said 'two hydra' on it
the doctor's car breaking down when he was about to leave on vacation, and then suddenly not being interested in leaving on vacation after Wanda has the twins
Agnes saying that her husband looks better in the dark
Agnes and Herb were acting out of character with Vision when Wanda was laser-focused on Geraldine. I think that weakened her hold on the rest of the illusion, letting them act out of character. And both of them left probably right when Wanda yeeted Geraldine out of the town, but the illusion wasn't fully back in place, so no laugh track when Agnes made that joke before she left.

I'm convinced now that this is all Wanda doing it, and not someone/thing else.

I love it so far, but there is one thing that annoys me quite a bit.

No, Marvel, u and ü are not interchangeable and no matter what the Metal Umlaut implies, using ü doesn't make a word sound harder or stronger. It does in fact do the exact opposite, with ü sounding softer and often cuter. (or "süßer" if you want ;) )
Compare for example "Drucker" with "Drücker". When you listen to the linked sound files, it's obvious that Marvel intended this "Strücker" to sound like "Drucker", since that is how they pronounce it as well, but it should have been pronounced like "Drücker". And since it is a watch made in Switzerland named after a German, there is no reason for them to use "Strücker".

But other than that minor quibble, it's been really great so far and I can't wait for the next episode.

Okay so after watching the first couple of episodes i was very underwhelmed, but thought it could be a slow build.
Yep, I was right. So an Ultron reference, and Geraldine being kicked literally 'off set' by Wanda into the outside world was a nice touch. Looks like the next episode could get very interesting indeed.

Man I'm really torn...on the one hand this is the goofball genre mashing insanity I want from the MCU (It prints money, go fucking weird!)...but it's hard not to shake the feeling that this is all building towards another Nothing Will Ever Be The Same Again shakeup ending. Basically, I'm having fun now, but once the shoe drops/things come together there's not gonna be a lot of rewatch value.

I dunno, I hope they stick the landing.

I mean there is the fundamental question of how do you stick the landing of a series like this.

You get Wanda back to the real world only for the illusion to to have at least one more layer in the final stinger. (I was a teen in the late 90's does it show? :V)

More seriously make it vaguely internally consistent and give whatever happens to the kids and Vision in the end some kind of emotional punch for people who didn't read Young Avengers. Marvel has proven at least somewhat capable given the public reaction to the Snap in Infinity War, and so far the show has felt better put together than Agents of Shield, so I think they'll probably be able to pull it off at least competently.

As for my 2 cents on the actual show so far, things have been fairly engaging though the 50s+60s sitcom stuff was a bit too much midcentury sitcom for my tastes. The first two episodes felt like they could have been an actual episodes of one of the shows of the time so it was a success in that regard, I just never liked sitcoms from the era. The 70's era worked better in my opinion since the focus of the episode was more connected to the plot of the overall narrative (Baby's coming). While the first two were sort of meandering and generic keeping up with the Jones's plotlines.

I mean, it's def pointing at something like House of M's ending - Wanda's forced to confront her delusions (Vision's dead, the kids aren't real, the whole thing has been a warped coping mechanism, and in her grief she pulls one last super reality bending spell that sets things up for Doctor Strange 2.

House of M ended 20 years ago so you probably don't need the spoilers. Despite all the Hydra name drops I'm still thinking that it is Mephisto (or Chthon) ultimately enabling Wanda to live the world she wants and not her own powers doing it as she wasn't a reality warper or sorceress in the MCU before this.
