[X] [Access] Break the ICE. Let Arisu work her Netrunner fight while you cover her in the real world.
As much as I want to believe in the power of friendship, I think that:
1. Yuuki need to rest from her injuries and not worries about her friend breaking into a megacorp office
2. Yuuki isn't that much a netrunner so her contribution would be limited anyway
3. In case something goes horribly wrong, it would be better if her and the café are not (directly) implicated in this affair.
Your choice of distraction was grabbing a flower pot and muttering a quick apology to Yuuki before tossing it through what was supposed to be a closed door.
Then a pistol barked and their head was no more. Arisu grunted and kicked the corpse down, hands slightly shaking but eyes resolved. She did have a silencer on her pistol, but it was pointless already with shouts and cries of intruders echoing across the office. "Sorry," She mumbled and you shook your head.
[X] [Access] Break the ICE. Let Arisu work her Netrunner fight while you cover her in the real world.
"Remain steady at the task before you," You firmly told Arisu and put a hand over your chest, making a vow. "None shall besmirch you so long as I am here."
She nodded, then reached backwards. At a single thought, a few pistol magazines dropped from her schoolbag into her palm and she held it out to you. "Take my spares. You'll need them more than I."
You picked them up gratefully, slightly thankful that Lycoris weaponry usually shared the same ammunition type. Perhaps it was for these such situations, or perhaps it was just a balm to logistics, but you'd take that now as you checked your Towa 14. Then your leg lashed out to kick over a nearby office desk before you crouched behind it, using it as a form of low cover.
Then you waited, making sure you checked your breathing to ensure your reactions were steady. It wouldn't do to jump at the slightest noise or fail to pick up on a hostile approaching. Meanwhile, Arisu cracked her neck, then slumped slightly when her consciousness plunged into the digital electronic world. Normally, for any regular Netrunner, this was where their body began to generate an immense amount of heat when the host's digital consciousness began to call upon vast amounts of processing power normally only found in bulky supercomputers.
But when the heat came, it was only centered in one of the Lycoris Graduate's arms. It was where her Lycoris Cyberdeck was, an exclusively designed piece of cyberware that packed the processing power of these supercomputers into a lesser but portable form. It could even interface and link directly with bigger processing units for seamless Netrunner integration over the web, but as it was, Arisu believed it should be enough to brute force the door's ICE.
In that world only seen through the eyes of such Netrunners, her avatar formed and examined the overlapping code arrays that barred her way. With a snap of her fingers, Arisu summoned a demon in the form of a crow. It cawed and began to dive in, launching probing assaults to try and find a weak spot. The arrays shifted and Arisu gestured with an arm to form a murder of her demons, eyes narrowing with a small excited smile.
She did so enjoy a good puzzle.
(Security Attack: 71)
Meanwhile in the real world, you could hear it. Footsteps, a heavy sort associated only with fighters, gingerly approaching your location. You listened to the rushed breaths, the slightly fiddling of the belt, the shaky click of a handgun. Even without looking, you had a good idea that this was just office security first on the scene to try and figure out what was going on. They did seem to approach rather warily and so it came down to how good you were with your surprise attack. You sucked in a quick breath, triggered your cyberware, then rose from cover with your pistol blazing away in a full-auto burst.
In a blink of an eye, the bullets left your pistol. In a blink of an eye, you rose, fired, ducked. In a blink of an eye, the guard's body crumpled to the ground, eyes wide, the brain having not yet comprehended it has perished for a brief second before the flow of blood ceased to the neural cortex. You peeked over the top to confirm the kill and slowly lowered back down, mechanically readying yourself for the next ambush.
"Let's see, let's see," Arisu half-hummed, half-sang while viewing the ICE through the eyes of her demons. "Well, whoever did this certainly didn't do the cameras, they're actually competent." She idly tested the theory by ordering one of the demons to divebomb the defenses, making sure to partially disconnect herself from it right before executing.
The visualization of her program screeched and complied, launching a light attack that the array immediately snapped up like a set of chomping jaws. The program was swallowed and rapidly decomposed, likely being ingested for a Netrunner to review in a report. That was, if Arisu didn't still have a direct connection via actual cable access. It was a simple manner to idly activate the self-termination to dissolve her demon back into pixels with one hand wave.
The other hand reached for her chin in thought. "Mmh. The type that eats up assaults huh?" She smiled and began to channel her processing power in booting up a proper attack program. "Let's see if we can't overload you."
(Security Attack: 92 +5 (Time Passage) = 97)
Meanwhile, you were on the verge of being overloaded yourself when the next attacker showed up. They still were office security, but they had apparently grabbed an submachine gun from some emergency armory and were approaching at a steady pace. There was quick pause at the sight of the fallen office security guard on the floor, then the footsteps picked up into a rapid advance. It looked like you couldn't use surprise for this one.
It would come down to who had the better draw of the gun. You sharply inhaled and activated your cyberware, then moved the moment you felt your body accelerate into a blur too fast for human eyes.
Perhaps though they had their own speedware, or they just fired on reflexive instant the minute a blur presented themselves. But their aim flinched for the briefest moment and threw them off, the bullets just barely grazing your body. You remained locked onto them with your eyes and fired, the fear of being shot at long since drilled out of you the moment you became a Lycoris.
Your shots, despite being under fire, were pinpoint accurate and marks appeared on the enemy's arms, chest, and head. They dropped to the floor and you stoically aimed down to put a few more rounds in the body to make sure. Then your aim snapped back up to check the area with intense focus, the time for ambushes totally over now. Now, it really was who could draw a bead first if somebody were to step through in the next few minutes.
In the digital world, Arisu finished form her demon and beheld the result with a laugh. It was a purely garbage program meant to spam nothing but repeated gibberish and took the demon form of a babbling parrot. She swung her arm out and the demon took flight for a scant few moments, cawing obscenity and curses as it soared through the air. Then it fell, right into the maws of the ICE array and was gobbled up without second thought.
It belched and began to bulge, the normally clear array beginning to cloud. It was working! Arisu quickly began to form another program instance, making sure to cycle the process to make sure she didn't burn out all of the sudden. Though she had a feeling that even if she pushed herself a little bit more and lost control rather sloppily, Mitsu would be there to immediately pull her out. She could hear the distant gunshots but felt no worry, still seeing her current partner as unharmed based on the biometic link.
(Security Attack: 29 +10 (Time Passage) = 39)
You tensed up, waiting for the next attack, but there was nothing. Either they were delayed, retreating, or worst, readying up for a more serious attempt. You decided to make the most out of this brief window of opportunity and hoped out of cover to drag the bodies to the side, somewhat out of the way as best you could. It wasn't perfect, but perhaps it'd give you an ambush opportunity when the next enemy showed up.
"Polly wants a very dirty nut!" The demon shrieked right before the ICE jaws snapped around it. Then the already bulging cheeks expanded and grew, rapidly collecting useless report information and errors. Pixels began to form and collect around Arisu's hand in response, taking the form of a glowing pistol not unlike her service weapon. She grinned and pointed it at the overfilled array, pulling the trigger on the breach program.
"Bang. ICE, breached!"
Your head snapped around when her body suddenly sucked in a deep breath, eyes fluttering when she returned to the real world. This coincided with the server door sliding open with a neat hiss and your temporary partner grinned, pulling herself out. "All done. Let me grab the data, then we can delta!"
You signaled your agreement with a nod of the head and then focused on the possible avenues of assault.
There was still no attack and a hand drifted to your katana. At this point, you were sure- they were done sending in office security whose most exciting task was escorting fired corporate workers out of the building. They had to be gearing up with proper corporate security now in the next attack, maybe EGO Security itself. Either way, you made sure your blade of justice was ready to cut down the honorless bandits.
Arisu quickly got to business in the meantime, quickly ejecting the datashard from her neck and plugging it into the system. It cycled for a moment before recognizing the credentials, authorizing database access into EGO Security members. She didn't even need to plug herself in, instead just using the touch screen to quickly flick through confidential personnel files to try and find what they were after.
"Not in active members?" She murmured with a frown, confused for a moment. Then she blinked and began to go through the other files, an idea on her lips.
You had guessed right when you listened in to the coordinated shouts that echoed through the nearly empty office now. They had brought in the real professionals now, and they were sweeping the place methodically. The moment there were gunshots, they'd almost certainly converge on your location, so you had to make this one as quiet as possible.
Your service pistol was tucked into your schoolbag holster and a hand gripped the hilt of your other weapon. Somebody drew close, their breaths quickening at the sight of the open server room, and they focused on that. It meant that you had the chance to surprise them and you took the opportunity when it presented itself, rising and drawing your crimson blade in one smooth action that coincided with your cyberware activation.
The red steel swung horizontally and dug into the protective neck gear, meant to catch perhaps the errant stray rock thrown its way. Meaning that it offered no resistance and was sliced through with ease, the Arasaka-forged steel then meeting skin, flesh, blood, bone. The EGO operative didn't even have the breath to shout in alarm, on account of their entire head being suddenly devoid of lungs to scream as they fell in two pieces onto the floor.
You quickly swung your blade again to try to shake off as much blood as you could, but kept it out, eyes narrowed and ready to strike again if need be. A hand reached back to draw your service pistol and you held both gun and blade prepared for battle if need be. Hopefully, your partner was nearing the end of her search.
"Aha," Arisu whispered and quickly dragged the file over to the side. The datashard plugged in flashed, then she pulled it out and tucked in a neckslot. Then she winced and lashed out with a foot at the sensitive electronic equipment, making sure to smash circuit and chipboard alike. She made sure no traces of what she had access were left behind before rushing out with a quiet whisper.. "I've got it. Let's get out of here."
"Excellent," You finally said, your tongue finally uncurling from the tenseness of combat. "Let us not entertain them with another moment of our tine."
"Well put." A pause. "What's our exit plan?"
You frowned, mentally listed what options you had, then made a decision.
[ ] [Exit] Out the front door. Guns blazing, eliminate any in your way!
[ ] [Exit] Out the rooftop. Try to slip away by leaping to the next building from the roof, fading into the streets of Hayato Strip.
[ ] [Exit] Out the window. Smash through the window and get a running start to reach the street, where your motorcycle was to make a hasty escape.
Utterly terrifying. Constructs of doom and despair.
Alright lets think about this...
Option one of a loud exfiltration hopefully means we leave after shattering the core of the EGO secuirty forces; they likely won't pursue in that case. (Or it's a run and gun all the way past the reception with a clown caravan of corpo sec following them). Only problem is- we don't have nearly enough combat power to directly run through a corpo response team. They're armored up and we only have pistol munitions. Lycoris seem to be trained as "ambush" predators in a manner of speaking, being primarily deployed for assassination and hit and run interdictions; though Mitsu might put out a longer, more sustained fight. Gunning and running would be an option: only if we had proper long arms and a fully manned frontline squad. No intel on enemy force composition either.
Very dicey. (Pun most certaintly intended)
Finding the way to the room could be a viable option, and admittedly it is the choice I am partial towards. It's kind of contingent on a couple assumptions however:
-EGO armed response is approaching from the bottom up. Generally buildings have security and armor facilities near the ground floor to obviously secure the primary entry exit point.
Maybe.
- EGO employees and office sec are sheltering in place or otherwise disorganized or unresponsive and ineffective on the way up. They might even be evacuating downwards which may slow the assumed response from lower(?) Floors
- jumping away on rooftops sounds like very spy ninja thriller drama mysterious and cool. Which would be sick (insert guitar riff here)
However. More straightforwards would just be busting down a window, leaping(?) and booking it.
We make a few assuptions here that
- we're close enough to the ground and to our vehicle to not need to descend floors to reach a "safe" height for jumping.
- We can mantain stealth or avoid swift retaliation. Retreating under a hail of bullets doesn't sound very Preem.
- it's unsafe to remain in the building for any significant extended period of time, we can hear heavy footsteps trodding from above and below.
- we could also blow up(idk how if we dont have a bomb just ask michael bay(electrical or gas overload? Idk ask Arisu if not then oh well) the building and leap out of a window. Absolutely lit and majestic(???)
Oh yeah and thanks for the chapters. I can't overstate how on edge the story has me right now but it's so very exciting.
I was wondering when giving Mitsu a second person PoV would lead to a mix up. Perhaps they truly are one heart and soul. That could be why the dice needed this long to catch up with the fact she ought to be the blessed one. Yuuki even sounds similar to "you."
That aside, yeah, it's good to see Mitsu getting to take some names. Let's hope that keeps up during the main event. I think we've killed enough EGO goons for now though, so cool guy exit it is.

Honestly, when you consider their job, it absolutely makes sense. Their main advantage is secrecy of their organization so few doubt an ordinary looking school girl passing by until it's too late. It also plays into how they minimize any sort of chaos from affecting public order. Very few do get involved in drawn-out firefights and note that even the best of them all (Chisato) ain't so hot after some time.
Meaning that you can only beat the dice so many times before snake eyes roll up.
Alright, we've gone loud. EGO's bringing the hammer down, and blunt force trauma is not on our agenda. Running up a couple flights of stairs with armed response on our heels to try and salvage any amount of the stealth we no longer really have seems pointless.
Corpo security is already on deck with us, so we'll have to bail with all deliberate haste. Such a shame we can't just seal club our way through these mercs. It would be really funny if we gunned it for the front door and it worked- just a trail of bodies in the wake.
Alas~
Cross your fingers and hope they're too slow to notice!

"We fly!" You declared with sharp grin. Arisu blinked confusedly, not understanding when you sheathed your blade. Then she let out a squeak when you suddenly swept her up in your arms and her head turned to follow your gaze to the office windows. "Brace thyself!"
Color swiftly drained from your colleague's face and she croaked. "Wait. Wait! Wait-! Let me prepare my heartttttt!" There was no denying that her cry of panic was rather loud, likely grabbing the attention of whatever EGO Security agents were sweeping the floor. However, it was no louder than the sound of the window smashing into glass shards when your body smashed right through, falling the short distance to the open sidewalk below.
(Window Exit: 8 +10 (Mitsu) +5 (Arisu) = 23)
You grunted and stumbled badly when you landed. It wasn't enough to twist your ankle badly or anything so drastic, but it definitely solidly check your momentum. Arisu also nearly fell out when she slipped out of your arms, nearly slamming into the ground face-first. She had to helped up, but the stumbling had definitely cost you both time, especially when shots began to ring out from the windows above. "Go!" You shouted, shoving at her back as the rounds came your way.
A few rounds manage to hit despite the range, but they landed squarely against your schoolbag which easily absorbed the shots as designed. You stumbled in your step for a brief moment at the impact, but quickly forced yourself to keep moving, pushing yourself out of effective range for those handguns. Even then, you didn't want to linger around for when one of them found a rifle of any kind and kept running, eyes lighting up as you called up your vehicle.
The Ashigaru came to a noisy screech right in front of the two fleeing Lycoris, the engine rumbling and ready to go. Arisu was the first to reach the vehicle and quickly hoped on the back, doing up the straps of a helmet. Her fingers froze when there was the squeal of tires and she looked up to see a van peel out out of its parked spot to turn at the motorcycle. "Looks like we've got followers!" She barked.
You merely grunted in acknowledge and sloppily pulled your helmet on. Then you grabbed the handlebars and kicked off with a hard roar of the throttle. The Ashigaru's front wheel lifted slightly at the sudden acceleration before slamming back down, the smell of burning rubber quickly filling your nostrils when you pushed your steed even harder than it had ever gone before. Arisu clung onto the handles for dear life while you bobbed and weaved at high speeds between other motor vehicles on the road, hoping that you could lose the pursuit on the streets of Hayato Strip.
Unfortunately, the flow of traffic worked against you as well when tightly-packed cars offered no way through and you were forced to swing back more than once to find an alternate route. In the meantime, it seemed that whoever was driving the EGO Security vehicle realized your ploy and detoured to take less congested roads. In the end, just as you came roaring out of a busy road, that damn van screeched and cornered hard to tail you again. You snarled when you caught sight of them in your mirrors and flashed a message to your partner. "We will be unable to return home in triumph if they trail us all the way back!"
"Let me have a crack at it." Beneath the helmet, Arisu's eyes began to glow.
"Don't let those fucking intruders escape!" The EGO Security operative in the back of the van barked at the van driver with a snarl. "We're flatlining them and getting that bonus!"
"What do you think I'm trying to do? I should get a higher cut when all you're doing is sitting on your ass!" The driver growled back. But before the conversation could escalate, the sudden flash of the vehicle's dashboard flickering to show a pixelated white rabbit taking over the screen. "Shit! One of them's a Netrunner! Systems are...holding, but it's an intense assault!"
"Fuck that! Stay on them, I'll put them in their place!" There was a series of clicks when they loaded and checked an assault rifle. "Keep up with them, and get me a steady shot!"
"Easier said than done, especially when it's fighting me hard!"
"Damn. Their van's ICE isn't top tier, but it's good enough to keep my quickhacks from full takeover," Arisu grimly reported. "I'll try to hit it again, but try to shake them off while they're dealing with that!"
You wordlessly nodded, then leaned forwards when you entered the emptier streets of Aira. From here on out, it was a contest of speed and your motorcycle rumbled at the challenge you set before it. If trickery wasn't going to work, then it was time to try raw power!
Bit by bit, length by length, the Ashigaru began to pull away from the lumbering van. You were eventually a full block away from one another, meaning that the moment you found the right corner to accelerate past, you could finally lose them. You noticed the way said vehicle's front wheels seem to slightly wobble, perhaps a symptom from Arisu's digital assault on the van's systems. Then your eyes widened at the sight of a black shape pointing out from within the van and you shouted a warning just in time for the rifle to fire through the front windshield.
Arisu jerked her head to the side just in time at your shout and the round barely scraped the side of her helmet. Then you leaned hard to the side to throw your weight around a corner, your knee almost kissing the road in the high-speed maneuver. The moment you cleared it, you immediately went the other way to finally lose the trail, trying to maintain your high speed all the while. After a few of these weaves, you risked a look in your mirror and saw nothing. But just to be sure, you asked somebody who could have a look. "Have we succeeded?"
"I actually lost connection to the van, that's how far we are from them now," Your partner replied back, then exhaled noisily. "We should be in the clear."
"Then let us retire back to our castle, so that we might ponder the final strike." You could feel how your hand trembled at the thought of finally exacting retribution for Yuuki. Soon, this all could come to an end, provided that you could figure out a way to eliminate a cyborg.
"He...wasn't a borg?" You numbly repeated, head swimming at that reveal. "He was simply...augmented?"
"That's what the personnel profile says," Arisu told, a swipe of her fingers highlighting the relevant sections on the digital screen the datashard was plugged into. "Both arms and legs are chrome, and he's packing subdermal. It explains why your pistol bounced right off."
You slumped, both slightly dismayed to learn you had been bested by just an augmented individual, but also slightly cheered to know you weren't fighting an absolute monster in metal. "That is both disappointing and relieving. How vexing!" You muttered, chewing your lip. "And already, I had made preparations so, what a bother."
"Preparations?" Arisu questioned, then hummed. "Well, I doubt that they would go to waste anyway. If it can zero a cyborg, it'll certainly zero somebody with a lot of chrome still. It all depends on how we tackle it and thanks to these deets, we've got a location now."
You squared your jaw and nodded. Apparently, your target wasn't even sticking around in the city- he had already been tasked and reassigned to another EGO Security branch. That had been why Mitsu struggled to find him at first in local active operatives, as he had already been transferred around. It meant that there was only a brief window to catch him before he left the city, then it was up to the whims of fate if your paths ever crossed again in the future.
Leaving it up to that certainly felt like a betrayal after all you had done, though it would definitely be the safest option. Your target was no cyborg, but they were still augmented enough to pose a danger, especially with all that cyberware. The location also made it slightly trickier: Old Europa, the western coastline of Kagoshima. Not only that, but a private dock owned by members of the Commandos. Arisu dug that up when going through records of the place- it looked like EGO Security really wanted to make sure the branch transfer went smoothly as possible.
That, or perhaps only one branch wanted it so. The corporation was hardly a single entity and there have been stories about how one branch would be at odds with another for contracts and operatives. Perhaps by choosing non-EGO forces, they'd hope to make sure there was no last minute stab in the back or 'accidental disruption' to the process. It certainly made things complicated.
Though at the same time, it also rather simplified some things. As it was, it meant that the target you were after was no longer part of the Kagoshima branch, but of another one in another city some distance away. That meant that if you flatlined him, the Kagoshima branch could hardly care less about it.
By extension as well, it also meant he was free game for a certain megacorporation to flex a bit of muscle too. This came in the form of a rather conspicuous weapons case sitting on the table, the fruits of both your money and Security Chief Azumi's negotiations to go through. Arisu glanced at it again and you finally decided to tell her the truth about it. "This had been meant to be my slayer of borgs, but it should suffice otherwise. And," You paused and looked at the Netrunner. "I think it best if you were to wield this. You should possess more skill than me here."
"Really?" She asked, surprised. Curiosity finally overcame her and she popped open the weapons case to study it inside with wide eyes. "...holy shit. You didn't pull your punches at all. How the hell did Arasaka actually allow this?"
You grimaced and recited the words from Azumi. "'Arasaka does not intend to let a slap to the face go unmatched. Perhaps unremarked, but never unaddressed in the end.' So we are instruments of a megacorporation as well here."
Arisu was silent at that and ran a hand through her hair. Then she sighed and shook her head. "Fuck it. This is totally going to be preem, so I'll do it. I'll be fire support for you, if you so want."
You nodded, and laid out the plan to finally end this once and for all.
[ ] [Attack] A frontal assault. You'll take the lead to cause as much chaos as possible on the docks, so much so that the target has no choice but to face you. -[ ] ...and putting himself in the scope of the sniper rifle.
[ ] [Attack] A duel of honor. Even if they are a foreigner, challenges of honor are almost always respected on the streets should the one doing the barking be loud enough. You'd like to face him down directly, warrior to warrior. -[ ] ...and Arisu hiding on a rooftop far away, waiting for a chance to end the duel prematurely.
[ ] [Attack] A forceful abduction. Sneak in and find the target in the private docks. Drag them off and bind them somehow if you can to capture alive, but you won't hesitate to kill if you can't. -[ ] ...and you'll make it a show as well with how brutal a weapon made to take down cyberrpsychos can be.
[ ] [Attack] Abandon the pursuit. It's gone on long enough. You've killed others in the name of your revenge, and no matter what, Yuuki's still going to have a missing arm. This isn't the righteous path of justice- it's of brutal vengeance and you don't want to continue down it.
- The sniper rifle is powerful and hits like a truck, but you've got limited shots, so consider if it's really worth bringing along. If you don't want to, Arisu will just join you in Netrunner support if possible.
Ah, Mitsu got us a wonderful present. I know why I wanted Yuuki to have some training in using this kind of beauty. I'm not sure how much use we're going to get out of at this point though. There's just been talk about how frontal assaults are just asking to go sideway eventually, the duel is definetly the most practical option in that regard, but it'd also be pretty dishonorable by Mitsu's standards and for a sneaky abduction the netrunner support might very well turn out more useful.
Or we could just skip out now. I'm not sure if that flows properly, or if there's just a bit of a sunk cost feeling now that we're several updates in, but the less we offer Mitsu up to the dice gods, the better. Maybe I'll change my vote to the abduction or something, if live and let live doesn't catch on.
[X] [Attack] Abandon the pursuit. It's gone on long enough. You've killed others in the name of your revenge, and no matter what, Yuuki's still going to have a missing arm. This isn't the righteous path of justice- it's of brutal vengeance and you don't want to continue down it.
It depends, it's technically Mitsu's to decide. It might make for good "payment for services rendered" for Arisu if she really likes it. Imagine coming back to the Arasaka Academy with that.
[X] [Attack] A duel of honor. Even if they are a foreigner, challenges of honor are almost always respected on the streets should the one doing the barking be loud enough. You'd like to face him down directly, warrior to warrior. -[x] ...and Arisu hiding on a rooftop far away, waiting for a chance to end the duel prematurely.

I don't want her to disrespect being a Samurai for revenge. It will damage her character.
