[X] [Access] Break the ICE. Let Arisu work her Netrunner fight while you cover her in the real world.

"Remain steady at the task before you," You firmly told Arisu and put a hand over your chest, making a vow. "None shall besmirch you so long as I am here."

She nodded, then reached backwards. At a single thought, a few pistol magazines dropped from her schoolbag into her palm and she held it out to you. "Take my spares. You'll need them more than I."

You picked them up gratefully, slightly thankful that Lycoris weaponry usually shared the same ammunition type. Perhaps it was for these such situations, or perhaps it was just a balm to logistics, but you'd take that now as you checked your Towa 14. Then your leg lashed out to kick over a nearby office desk before you crouched behind it, using it as a form of low cover.

Then you waited, making sure you checked your breathing to ensure your reactions were steady. It wouldn't do to jump at the slightest noise or fail to pick up on a hostile approaching. Meanwhile, Arisu cracked her neck, then slumped slightly when her consciousness plunged into the digital electronic world. Normally, for any regular Netrunner, this was where their body began to generate an immense amount of heat when the host's digital consciousness began to call upon vast amounts of processing power normally only found in bulky supercomputers.

But when the heat came, it was only centered in one of the Lycoris Graduate's arms. It was where her Lycoris Cyberdeck was, an exclusively designed piece of cyberware that packed the processing power of these supercomputers into a lesser but portable form. It could even interface and link directly with bigger processing units for seamless Netrunner integration over the web, but as it was, Arisu believed it should be enough to brute force the door's ICE.

In that world only seen through the eyes of such Netrunners, her avatar formed and examined the overlapping code arrays that barred her way. With a snap of her fingers, Arisu summoned a demon in the form of a crow. It cawed and began to dive in, launching probing assaults to try and find a weak spot. The arrays shifted and Arisu gestured with an arm to form a murder of her demons, eyes narrowing with a small excited smile.

She did so enjoy a good puzzle.

(Security Attack: 71)

Meanwhile in the real world, you could hear it. Footsteps, a heavy sort associated only with fighters, gingerly approaching your location. You listened to the rushed breaths, the slightly fiddling of the belt, the shaky click of a handgun. Even without looking, you had a good idea that this was just office security first on the scene to try and figure out what was going on. They did seem to approach rather warily and so it came down to how good you were with your surprise attack. You sucked in a quick breath, triggered your cyberware, then rose from cover with your pistol blazing away in a full-auto burst.

(Surprise Attack: 63 +10 (Mitsu) +10 (Lycoris Surge) = 83)
(Towa 14 (Piercing 0): 49 +15 (Mitsu) +10 (Lycoris Graduate) +10 (Short Range) +20 (Surprise) = 104)
(Office Security (Armor 0): 47 +0 (Office) -0 (Armor) -14 (Hit) = 33)

Mitsu Towa 14 Ammo: 15/16

In a blink of an eye, the bullets left your pistol. In a blink of an eye, you rose, fired, ducked. In a blink of an eye, the guard's body crumpled to the ground, eyes wide, the brain having not yet comprehended it has perished for a brief second before the flow of blood ceased to the neural cortex. You peeked over the top to confirm the kill and slowly lowered back down, mechanically readying yourself for the next ambush.

(Door Probe: 38 +15 (Arisu) +15 (Lycoris Netrunner) +10 (Murderous Eye) = 78)
(Door Security: 51 +0 (Inanimate Security) = 51)

"Let's see, let's see," Arisu half-hummed, half-sang while viewing the ICE through the eyes of her demons. "Well, whoever did this certainly didn't do the cameras, they're actually competent." She idly tested the theory by ordering one of the demons to divebomb the defenses, making sure to partially disconnect herself from it right before executing.

The visualization of her program screeched and complied, launching a light attack that the array immediately snapped up like a set of chomping jaws. The program was swallowed and rapidly decomposed, likely being ingested for a Netrunner to review in a report. That was, if Arisu didn't still have a direct connection via actual cable access. It was a simple manner to idly activate the self-termination to dissolve her demon back into pixels with one hand wave.

The other hand reached for her chin in thought. "Mmh. The type that eats up assaults huh?" She smiled and began to channel her processing power in booting up a proper attack program. "Let's see if we can't overload you."

(Security Attack: 92 +5 (Time Passage) = 97)

Meanwhile, you were on the verge of being overloaded yourself when the next attacker showed up. They still were office security, but they had apparently grabbed an submachine gun from some emergency armory and were approaching at a steady pace. There was quick pause at the sight of the fallen office security guard on the floor, then the footsteps picked up into a rapid advance. It looked like you couldn't use surprise for this one.

It would come down to who had the better draw of the gun. You sharply inhaled and activated your cyberware, then moved the moment you felt your body accelerate into a blur too fast for human eyes.

(Mitsu Initiative: 37 +15 (Mitsu) +10 (Lycoris Surge) = 62)
(Security Initiative: 94 -5 (Unexpected) = 89)

(SMG (Piercing 0): 30 +0 (Office Security) +20 (Short Range) = 50)

Perhaps though they had their own speedware, or they just fired on reflexive instant the minute a blur presented themselves. But their aim flinched for the briefest moment and threw them off, the bullets just barely grazing your body. You remained locked onto them with your eyes and fired, the fear of being shot at long since drilled out of you the moment you became a Lycoris.

(Towa 14 (Piercing 0): 17 +15 (Mitsu) +10 (Lycoris Graduate) +10 (Short Range) = 52)
(Office Security (Armor 0): 45 +0 (Office) -0 (Armor) -7 (Hit) = 38)

Mitsu Towa 14 Ammo: 14/16

Your shots, despite being under fire, were pinpoint accurate and marks appeared on the enemy's arms, chest, and head. They dropped to the floor and you stoically aimed down to put a few more rounds in the body to make sure. Then your aim snapped back up to check the area with intense focus, the time for ambushes totally over now. Now, it really was who could draw a bead first if somebody were to step through in the next few minutes.

In the digital world, Arisu finished form her demon and beheld the result with a laugh. It was a purely garbage program meant to spam nothing but repeated gibberish and took the demon form of a babbling parrot. She swung her arm out and the demon took flight for a scant few moments, cawing obscenity and curses as it soared through the air. Then it fell, right into the maws of the ICE array and was gobbled up without second thought.

(Door Breach: 3 +15 (Arisu) +15 (Lycoris Netrunner) +10 (Echoed Packets) +10 (Probe) = 53)
(Door Security: 36 +0 (Inanimate Security) -10 (EW Attack) = 26)

It belched and began to bulge, the normally clear array beginning to cloud. It was working! Arisu quickly began to form another program instance, making sure to cycle the process to make sure she didn't burn out all of the sudden. Though she had a feeling that even if she pushed herself a little bit more and lost control rather sloppily, Mitsu would be there to immediately pull her out. She could hear the distant gunshots but felt no worry, still seeing her current partner as unharmed based on the biometic link.

(Security Attack: 29 +10 (Time Passage) = 39)

You tensed up, waiting for the next attack, but there was nothing. Either they were delayed, retreating, or worst, readying up for a more serious attempt. You decided to make the most out of this brief window of opportunity and hoped out of cover to drag the bodies to the side, somewhat out of the way as best you could. It wasn't perfect, but perhaps it'd give you an ambush opportunity when the next enemy showed up.

(Door Breach: 82 +15 (Arisu) +15 (Lycoris Netrunner) +10 (Echoed Packets) = 122)
(Door Security: 59 +0 (Inanimate Security) -10 (EW Attack) -10 (Engorged) = 39)

"Polly wants a very dirty nut!" The demon shrieked right before the ICE jaws snapped around it. Then the already bulging cheeks expanded and grew, rapidly collecting useless report information and errors. Pixels began to form and collect around Arisu's hand in response, taking the form of a glowing pistol not unlike her service weapon. She grinned and pointed it at the overfilled array, pulling the trigger on the breach program.

"Bang. ICE, breached!"

Your head snapped around when her body suddenly sucked in a deep breath, eyes fluttering when she returned to the real world. This coincided with the server door sliding open with a neat hiss and your temporary partner grinned, pulling herself out. "All done. Let me grab the data, then we can delta!"

You signaled your agreement with a nod of the head and then focused on the possible avenues of assault.

(Security Attack: 15 +15 (Time Passage) +10 (Preparations) = 40)

There was still no attack and a hand drifted to your katana. At this point, you were sure- they were done sending in office security whose most exciting task was escorting fired corporate workers out of the building. They had to be gearing up with proper corporate security now in the next attack, maybe EGO Security itself. Either way, you made sure your blade of justice was ready to cut down the honorless bandits.

Arisu quickly got to business in the meantime, quickly ejecting the datashard from her neck and plugging it into the system. It cycled for a moment before recognizing the credentials, authorizing database access into EGO Security members. She didn't even need to plug herself in, instead just using the touch screen to quickly flick through confidential personnel files to try and find what they were after.

(Data Search: 23 +15 (Arisu) +10 (Database Authoriziation) = 48)

"Not in active members?" She murmured with a frown, confused for a moment. Then she blinked and began to go through the other files, an idea on her lips.

(Security Attack: 58 +20 (Time Passage) +20 (Preparations) = 98)

You had guessed right when you listened in to the coordinated shouts that echoed through the nearly empty office now. They had brought in the real professionals now, and they were sweeping the place methodically. The moment there were gunshots, they'd almost certainly converge on your location, so you had to make this one as quiet as possible.

Your service pistol was tucked into your schoolbag holster and a hand gripped the hilt of your other weapon. Somebody drew close, their breaths quickening at the sight of the open server room, and they focused on that. It meant that you had the chance to surprise them and you took the opportunity when it presented itself, rising and drawing your crimson blade in one smooth action that coincided with your cyberware activation.

(Surprise Attack: 71 +10 (Mitsu) +10 (Lycoris Surge) = 91)
(Arasaka Katana (Piercing 2): 83 +15 (Mitsu) +10 (Lycoris Ronin) +20 (Surprise) = 128)
(EGO Security (Armor 0): 88 +0 (EGO) -20 (Armor) -20 (Hit) = 48)

The red steel swung horizontally and dug into the protective neck gear, meant to catch perhaps the errant stray rock thrown its way. Meaning that it offered no resistance and was sliced through with ease, the Arasaka-forged steel then meeting skin, flesh, blood, bone. The EGO operative didn't even have the breath to shout in alarm, on account of their entire head being suddenly devoid of lungs to scream as they fell in two pieces onto the floor.

You quickly swung your blade again to try to shake off as much blood as you could, but kept it out, eyes narrowed and ready to strike again if need be. A hand reached back to draw your service pistol and you held both gun and blade prepared for battle if need be. Hopefully, your partner was nearing the end of her search.

(Data Search 2: 66 +15 (Arisu) +10 (Database Authoriziation) +10 (Files Scanned) = 101)

"Aha," Arisu whispered and quickly dragged the file over to the side. The datashard plugged in flashed, then she pulled it out and tucked in a neckslot. Then she winced and lashed out with a foot at the sensitive electronic equipment, making sure to smash circuit and chipboard alike. She made sure no traces of what she had access were left behind before rushing out with a quiet whisper.. "I've got it. Let's get out of here."

"Excellent," You finally said, your tongue finally uncurling from the tenseness of combat. "Let us not entertain them with another moment of our tine."

"Well put." A pause. "What's our exit plan?"

You frowned, mentally listed what options you had, then made a decision.

[ ] [Exit] Out the front door. Guns blazing, eliminate any in your way!

[ ] [Exit] Out the rooftop. Try to slip away by leaping to the next building from the roof, fading into the streets of Hayato Strip.

[ ] [Exit] Out the window. Smash through the window and get a running start to reach the street, where your motorcycle was to make a hasty escape.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Mitsu really did go full samurai mode now, holy cow. Arisu did well also, but I think your partner really took the spotlight here.

Four hour moratorium to come up with a mode of
egress.

[X] [Exit] Out the window. Smash through the window and get a running start to reach the street, where your motorcycle was to make a hasty escape.

"We fly!" You declared with sharp grin. Arisu blinked confusedly, not understanding when you sheathed your blade. Then she let out a squeak when you suddenly swept her up in your arms and her head turned to follow your gaze to the office windows. "Brace thyself!"

Color swiftly drained from your colleague's face and she croaked. "Wait. Wait! Wait-! Let me prepare my heartttttt!" There was no denying that her cry of panic was rather loud, likely grabbing the attention of whatever EGO Security agents were sweeping the floor. However, it was no louder than the sound of the window smashing into glass shards when your body smashed right through, falling the short distance to the open sidewalk below.

(Window Exit: 8 +10 (Mitsu) +5 (Arisu) = 23)

You grunted and stumbled badly when you landed. It wasn't enough to twist your ankle badly or anything so drastic, but it definitely solidly check your momentum. Arisu also nearly fell out when she slipped out of your arms, nearly slamming into the ground face-first. She had to helped up, but the stumbling had definitely cost you both time, especially when shots began to ring out from the windows above. "Go!" You shouted, shoving at her back as the rounds came your way.

(Handgun (Piercing 0): 53 +10 (EGO Security) +0 (Normal Range) = 63)
(Mitsu (Armor 1): 64 +10 (Mitsu) +10 (Armor) -5 (Hit) = 79)
(Handgun (Piercing 0): 23 +10 (EGO Security) +0 (Normal Range) = 33)

A few rounds manage to hit despite the range, but they landed squarely against your schoolbag which easily absorbed the shots as designed. You stumbled in your step for a brief moment at the impact, but quickly forced yourself to keep moving, pushing yourself out of effective range for those handguns. Even then, you didn't want to linger around for when one of them found a rifle of any kind and kept running, eyes lighting up as you called up your vehicle.

The Ashigaru came to a noisy screech right in front of the two fleeing Lycoris, the engine rumbling and ready to go. Arisu was the first to reach the vehicle and quickly hoped on the back, doing up the straps of a helmet. Her fingers froze when there was the squeal of tires and she looked up to see a van peel out out of its parked spot to turn at the motorcycle. "Looks like we've got followers!" She barked.

You merely grunted in acknowledge and sloppily pulled your helmet on. Then you grabbed the handlebars and kicked off with a hard roar of the throttle. The Ashigaru's front wheel lifted slightly at the sudden acceleration before slamming back down, the smell of burning rubber quickly filling your nostrils when you pushed your steed even harder than it had ever gone before. Arisu clung onto the handles for dear life while you bobbed and weaved at high speeds between other motor vehicles on the road, hoping that you could lose the pursuit on the streets of Hayato Strip.

(Ashigaru: 14 +15 (Mitsu) +10 (Lycoris Samurai) = 39)
(EGO Van: 26)

Unfortunately, the flow of traffic worked against you as well when tightly-packed cars offered no way through and you were forced to swing back more than once to find an alternate route. In the meantime, it seemed that whoever was driving the EGO Security vehicle realized your ploy and detoured to take less congested roads. In the end, just as you came roaring out of a busy road, that damn van screeched and cornered hard to tail you again. You snarled when you caught sight of them in your mirrors and flashed a message to your partner. "We will be unable to return home in triumph if they trail us all the way back!"

"Let me have a crack at it." Beneath the helmet, Arisu's eyes began to glow.

(Van Breach: 72 +15 (Mitsu) +15 (Lycoris Netrunner) = 102)
(Van ICE: 86)

"Don't let those fucking intruders escape!" The EGO Security operative in the back of the van barked at the van driver with a snarl. "We're flatlining them and getting that bonus!"

"What do you think I'm trying to do? I should get a higher cut when all you're doing is sitting on your ass!" The driver growled back. But before the conversation could escalate, the sudden flash of the vehicle's dashboard flickering to show a pixelated white rabbit taking over the screen. "Shit! One of them's a Netrunner! Systems are...holding, but it's an intense assault!"

"Fuck that! Stay on them, I'll put them in their place!" There was a series of clicks when they loaded and checked an assault rifle. "Keep up with them, and get me a steady shot!"

"Easier said than done, especially when it's fighting me hard!"

"Damn. Their van's ICE isn't top tier, but it's good enough to keep my quickhacks from full takeover," Arisu grimly reported. "I'll try to hit it again, but try to shake them off while they're dealing with that!"

You wordlessly nodded, then leaned forwards when you entered the emptier streets of Aira. From here on out, it was a contest of speed and your motorcycle rumbled at the challenge you set before it. If trickery wasn't going to work, then it was time to try raw power!

(Ashigaru: 66 +15 (Mitsu) +10 (Lycoris Samurai) = 91)
(EGO Van: 28)

Bit by bit, length by length, the Ashigaru began to pull away from the lumbering van. You were eventually a full block away from one another, meaning that the moment you found the right corner to accelerate past, you could finally lose them. You noticed the way said vehicle's front wheels seem to slightly wobble, perhaps a symptom from Arisu's digital assault on the van's systems. Then your eyes widened at the sight of a black shape pointing out from within the van and you shouted a warning just in time for the rifle to fire through the front windshield.

(Assault Rifle (Piercing 1): 32 +10 (EGO Security) +0 (Extreme Range) = 42)

Arisu jerked her head to the side just in time at your shout and the round barely scraped the side of her helmet. Then you leaned hard to the side to throw your weight around a corner, your knee almost kissing the road in the high-speed maneuver. The moment you cleared it, you immediately went the other way to finally lose the trail, trying to maintain your high speed all the while. After a few of these weaves, you risked a look in your mirror and saw nothing. But just to be sure, you asked somebody who could have a look. "Have we succeeded?"

"I actually lost connection to the van, that's how far we are from them now," Your partner replied back, then exhaled noisily. "We should be in the clear."

"Then let us retire back to our castle, so that we might ponder the final strike." You could feel how your hand trembled at the thought of finally exacting retribution for Yuuki. Soon, this all could come to an end, provided that you could figure out a way to eliminate a cyborg.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"He...wasn't a borg?" You numbly repeated, head swimming at that reveal. "He was simply...augmented?"

"That's what the personnel profile says," Arisu told, a swipe of her fingers highlighting the relevant sections on the digital screen the datashard was plugged into. "Both arms and legs are chrome, and he's packing subdermal. It explains why your pistol bounced right off."

You slumped, both slightly dismayed to learn you had been bested by just an augmented individual, but also slightly cheered to know you weren't fighting an absolute monster in metal. "That is both disappointing and relieving. How vexing!" You muttered, chewing your lip. "And already, I had made preparations so, what a bother."

"Preparations?" Arisu questioned, then hummed. "Well, I doubt that they would go to waste anyway. If it can zero a cyborg, it'll certainly zero somebody with a lot of chrome still. It all depends on how we tackle it and thanks to these deets, we've got a location now."

You squared your jaw and nodded. Apparently, your target wasn't even sticking around in the city- he had already been tasked and reassigned to another EGO Security branch. That had been why Mitsu struggled to find him at first in local active operatives, as he had already been transferred around. It meant that there was only a brief window to catch him before he left the city, then it was up to the whims of fate if your paths ever crossed again in the future.

Leaving it up to that certainly felt like a betrayal after all you had done, though it would definitely be the safest option. Your target was no cyborg, but they were still augmented enough to pose a danger, especially with all that cyberware. The location also made it slightly trickier: Old Europa, the western coastline of Kagoshima. Not only that, but a private dock owned by members of the Commandos. Arisu dug that up when going through records of the place- it looked like EGO Security really wanted to make sure the branch transfer went smoothly as possible.

That, or perhaps only one branch wanted it so. The corporation was hardly a single entity and there have been stories about how one branch would be at odds with another for contracts and operatives. Perhaps by choosing non-EGO forces, they'd hope to make sure there was no last minute stab in the back or 'accidental disruption' to the process. It certainly made things complicated.

Though at the same time, it also rather simplified some things. As it was, it meant that the target you were after was no longer part of the Kagoshima branch, but of another one in another city some distance away. That meant that if you flatlined him, the Kagoshima branch could hardly care less about it.

By extension as well, it also meant he was free game for a certain megacorporation to flex a bit of muscle too. This came in the form of a rather conspicuous weapons case sitting on the table, the fruits of both your money and Security Chief Azumi's negotiations to go through. Arisu glanced at it again and you finally decided to tell her the truth about it. "This had been meant to be my slayer of borgs, but it should suffice otherwise. And," You paused and looked at the Netrunner. "I think it best if you were to wield this. You should possess more skill than me here."

"Really?" She asked, surprised. Curiosity finally overcame her and she popped open the weapons case to study it inside with wide eyes. "...holy shit. You didn't pull your punches at all. How the hell did Arasaka actually allow this?"

You grimaced and recited the words from Azumi. "'Arasaka does not intend to let a slap to the face go unmatched. Perhaps unremarked, but never unaddressed in the end.' So we are instruments of a megacorporation as well here."

Arisu was silent at that and ran a hand through her hair. Then she sighed and shook her head. "Fuck it. This is totally going to be preem, so I'll do it. I'll be fire support for you, if you so want."

You nodded, and laid out the plan to finally end this once and for all.

[ ] [Attack] A frontal assault. You'll take the lead to cause as much chaos as possible on the docks, so much so that the target has no choice but to face you.
-[ ] ...and putting himself in the scope of the sniper rifle.

[ ] [Attack] A duel of honor. Even if they are a foreigner, challenges of honor are almost always respected on the streets should the one doing the barking be loud enough. You'd like to face him down directly, warrior to warrior.
-[ ] ...and Arisu hiding on a rooftop far away, waiting for a chance to end the duel prematurely.

[ ] [Attack] A forceful abduction. Sneak in and find the target in the private docks. Drag them off and bind them somehow if you can to capture alive, but you won't hesitate to kill if you can't.
-[ ] ...and you'll make it a show as well with how brutal a weapon made to take down cyberrpsychos can be.

[ ] [Attack] Abandon the pursuit. It's gone on long enough. You've killed others in the name of your revenge, and no matter what, Yuuki's still going to have a missing arm. This isn't the righteous path of justice- it's of brutal vengeance and you don't want to continue down it.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- The sniper rifle is powerful and hits like a truck, but you've got limited shots, so consider if it's really worth bringing along. If you don't want to, Arisu will just join you in Netrunner support if possible.

Four hour moratorium to decide a confrontation.

"...that being said, do you have any questions for me?" You politely asked with a smile. "After all, this interview does go both ways- me getting to know a prospective employee, you getting to know a possible new workplace."

"Hah, just you asking that probably ranks you already higher than most managers I've worked under before!" Hinata remarked through the call. "No, I think I'm pretty good on the deets so far. Gotta say, I really think it's nova that you're going for a flower cafe theme, and if you provide the uniforms, then that's preem in my books. Ah, actually, just one thing if you don't me prodding a little."

"Please, ask away."

"Er, you're not going to drag me into any of that weird...Edgerunner crap, you know?" He warily asked, calling back to why this was a digital interview. "I'm sorry but I really like my two fleshy arms and I ain't going to chip it up. So if you've got anything of that, please, leave me the fuck out. I've got fish that I definitely want to see when I come home everyday."

"I see. I'll definitely keep that in mind," You promised with a nod. "If that's all, then please look forward to my decision sometime soon. Likely after I finally get some new chrome."

"Looking forward to it and I hope you're back on your feet soon enough!" With a little wave, the call disconnected and you leaned back in the medical bed with a satisfied sigh. Your first ever interview had gone well, and you now reviewed the notes you'd been jotting down on a little text document via your opticware.

Morales Hinata was a veritable veteran of the service industry, owing to the rather tragic fact that he had to first start taking up jobs while he was still a secondary school student. He had struggled juggling the two aspects of his life but somehow managed to pull through with a barely passing grade and siblings he managed to help send off to college when they qualified for scholarships. Unfortunately, he hadn't met such criteria and was thus rather stuck in life.

But yet he didn't let that drag him down and managed to carve out a little bubble for himself in the city through working in the service industry. If he really decided to, you were sure Hinata could probably find some nice customer service job in Tokyo or something higher up, but he liked Kagoshima far too much to try to move out. He did hint that had you not appeared, he maybe would have reconsidered that line of thinking and started prepping to move out. He didn't have faith that anybody but you in the area could handle his rather lax and easygoing attitude to the job. His boundaries and his experience were a complete bundle, through and through.

It meant that you could only lean on him for the public front of Kagoshima Fragrance, and could really not pull him into the other Fixer aspect. You supposed that was fine, if just a bit disappointing. But not everybody was willing to work with the darker aspects of the city, even if there was a mix of eddies and street cred to gain from it. You recalled how you yourself wanted to help provide guidance to individuals in need of such direction, hence why you had chosen to get involved.

Even now, you reflected on how much more active and focused you were despite being stuck in a medical ward now. Maybe it was your biases from previous incidents coloring your perception, but compared to the first time when you felt nothing but pointless despair, this was certainly not just sitting around and bemoaning life. No, you were focused on trying to make sure your new business was going to be the very best it could be when it finally opened up while keeping an eye on the city's happenings via the tablet provided by Pauper.

It was a definite far cry from feeling like just a failed child soldier. All that could make this better perhaps would be a little nice vase by your bedside, with a flower perhaps grown by your own hands providing a lovely fragrance-

Your thoughts were suddenly interrupted with a notification of an incoming call in your vision. You blinked at the ID and immediately accepted with a concerned look. "Mitsu? Everything okay?"

"I am indeed. You need not worry," She responded and it was quickly verified when the video connection was established. You let out a relieved sigh and shifted, slightly mindful of your missing left arm. "How do you fare? Sick of eating corporate fare yet?" Your partner softly teased and you laughed.

"It is a little bit too dense for me, so I'm really looking to getting out of here. How are you doing? Oh, did you manage to pick up Arisu?" You pretended to lean around, as if you could see her over the shoulder. "Please pass on my well-wishes to her."

"I shall." Then she hesitated, a clear conflict in her eyes. You said nothing, letting Mitsu fight her own pride to discuss whatever had been bothering her. "...Yuuki, I...that is, me and Arisu, we have tracked down he who had harmed you so. Who had claimed a piece of your body from you." You couldn't see it, but you could imagine her hand balling up into a fist in anger of that thought.

You considered your next few words carefully. "I see. But it sounds like you've got something on your mind."

"Because it's so much more complicated than what I had originally envisioned," Your partner somberly told, clearly frustrated. "I had always seen myself a hero of justice. That had been what I told myself on those patrols, when we eliminated any that posed a threat to the order of Kyoto. We were heroes, I had thought, and it would come so simply to me when we graduated.

"But now, without a voice in head giving me orders on who to slay, I find myself doubting my own choices. My own judgment." She swallowed and her head dipped down. "I had gone after your attacker in thinking it would be so simple, but in the process, have I not sown greater evil along the way? Or is it all righteous in the name of honor, for both me and you?"

"Ah. It really is so different out there," You sighed and closed your eyes. This was...difficult, and you felt like staying in bed like a slug was absolutely not appropriate for the moment. You gently pulled back the blankets and stood on your own feet, speaking all the while. "It's one thing to be told you're doing the right thing, but now that we're adults, we don't have that guidance anymore. Not as long as we don't want a leash back on us."

"One that we slip on willingly at least," She mumbled and noticed your movement with some concern. "Should you not be resting?"

"My legs are going to start withering away if I don't get the blood flowing now and then. But I'll keep it brief." True to your words, it was only a few strides to the side of the sealed door that led in and out the medical ward. You blandly realized that there wasn't a chair nearby to drag, then decided the ground was good enough to sit on, leaning your back against the block of steel that separated you from the rest of the building. "I'm curious though. Did you dig up anything on the who nearly flatlined me?"

Mitsu flinched slightly at your wording, but nodded and wordlessly forwarded a personnel file you were quite sure she wasn't supposed to be able to access. But you focused on the history of the individual themselves, wanting to know more about the one who nearly punched your ticket. It wasn't like you could go back and ask about the other ones who had nearly done so, making this a rather interesting exercise.

The individual in question was a man who seemingly only knew how to fight to live. His personal history made brief mention that he had been orphaned early in life, his entire family unfortunately losing everything in life due to a religious cult they had given themselves into. He drifted on the streets and eventually learned, rather straightforwardly, that might was how one could find a name for themselves in this world. From there, he was scouted by EGO Security and the rest was a history of being one of their more reliable operatives. Not necessarily the best, but the one who at least could be trusted to decide to shoot first, get paid later, and never ask the questions afterwards.

You let out a rueful chuckle. "Huh. This guy's actually almost like us when we were younger."

"So you noticed the similarities too," Mitsu soberly observed. "Were he a she and a few decades younger, Lycoris would be overjoyed to have the model soldier. One that even doesn't ask questions."

"But as we know now, it's good to have those questions sometimes," You finished with a shake of the head. You dismissed the file with a blink and hummed thoughtfully, your gaze drifting to your schoolbag resting on your bedside table. "So then. What are you going to do?"

"I wanted to ask you-"

"Stop that." The words came out a bit harsher than you anticipated and you winced, quickly adding, "Stop trying to follow orders from a chain of command we don't have anymore. We're our own people now, and we can live our own lives unlike Mister EGO over here. He won't even have a life outside killing others, and I know that you're better than that. You can be, if you want," You ended gently, tensing up for a moment in anticipation for Mitsu's response.

There was a long moment of silence when your partner tried to formulate an answer, one that had you glancing again at your equipment. Well, it wasn't like you needed two hands to use a gun…

[ ] [Mitsu] "If you think I can be better, then...I think I need to show so by leaving him behind. Let him wander his paths and us ours- they intersect only a mere once, and if they cross again, then that is life. Let us measure then who has truly lived in comparison."

[ ] [Mitsu] "Being better...it means that we have to show appropriate retribution, but nothing more. Chrome for chrome. Let's settle it, then be done with it all, regardless if he walks away or not. That's true justice."

[ ] [Mitsu] "When we strike...it really is for the better. It makes the world a better place if we decide it so. People like him, they cheapen life into eddies. We can't let that stand. We need to show that if you wield the gun, you must be prepared to die by the blade, that taking a life should never be so cold."

[ ] [Yuuki] Sit there and let Mitsu handle it.

[ ] [Yuuki] Grab your bag and join your partner.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Choosing appropriate retribution (the second option) means looking for an honorable duel to settle things. Choosing valuing life (the third option) means taking the threat seriously and looking to end him as practically as possible (drawing him out to snipe).
- Yuuki's choice will decide whose POV you want to go through for the final showdown here if applicable.
- I did not know the background at all until the time came for me to toss die at it. Make of it what you will.

[X] [Mitsu] "If you think I can be better, then...I think I need to show so by leaving him behind. Let him wander his paths and us ours- they intersect only a mere once, and if they cross again, then that is life. Let us measure then who has truly lived in comparison."
[X] [Yuuki] Sit there and let Mitsu handle it.

"If you think I can be better, then…" She hesitated through the call before lowering her head. "...then I think I need to show so by leaving him behind." Her hand was visibly clenching, clearly at conflict within herself, not sure if this was the right choice at all.

But it was one she made by herself, and for that, you wanted to respect it above everything. Maybe you disagreed, maybe you agreed. Either way, you still spoke up in an understanding and patient tone. "We're not following orders anymore. We can live for ourselves now."

"You're right. Let him wander his paths and us ours- they intersect only a mere once, and if they cross again, then that is life. Let us measure then who has truly lived in comparison." Mitsu paused, her eyes flicking to you on the call screen. "Is that...acceptable? That this slight goes forgiven."

"Don't get me wrong, I'm still upset about losing an arm, but I think it'd be even worst if I lost you too. It's fine if he walks away so long as you do as well," You declared with a head nod before resting it against the wall. "That's all I care about in the end. Forget about vengeance or any of that, at least not unless we get paid to do so. Then that's just a job benefit."

"Hah," Your partner snorted through the call and seemingly leaned her head back as well. "So the moment there's a bounty, I've free leave to go after him. An acceptable arrangement, I would say."

"At that point, it's a gig and I'm getting involved. After all, I'm your Fixer now," You lightly teased with a smile and held out your fingers, like wanting to grasp her hand. "I have to become rather meddlesome and pay you to do annoying jobs."

"Haha!" Now it was a full laugh, cheer finally restored to her face. "If you insist, then I'll guard you on the job, for the right cut."

"I wouldn't have it any other way once I get out of here." Your hands grasped the empty air and unknowingly, on the opposite of the wall, your partner mimicked the expression where she sat resting in the hallway outside the medical ward.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You cast a critical eye on the pictures of your garden and nodded, sending a little thumbs-up emoticon to Mitsu who was diligently caring for them in your absence. You had chosen to stay in the medical ward just a little bit longer to make sure you healed up properly, though you were fairly sure you were well-enough to be discharged already. The missing arm would be annoying, but you did know how to reload a pistol with your teeth if need be.

An assault rifle though, that would be more annoying, along with whatever other goodies Mitsu had been mentioning she had acquired. You blinked, then sheepishly added 'operating a coffee machine' to the list. It spoke volumes how you still immediately gravitated to combat practicality over daily necessities and living. Maybe that was why people usually didn't leave until they got new chrome.

Of course, that was when the door to your room slid open and Security Chief Azumi showed up with a small nod of the head. She notably didn't step through until you waved her through, her shoulders slightly relaxing the moment she was inside and the door sealed shut behind. "Good morning. How are you doing?"

"Well enough." You amicably told and discretely turned off the tablet Pauper had provided. "Is it finally time?"

"Aye, I finally managed to sit down with my bosses and ferret out an answer from their lips." She scowled. "It really didn't have to be that annoying, they just had to tell me what we could offer you. Maybe it was just a power play to make me approach them. Bah."

"Must be rough in Arasaka," You bluntly told and Azumi coughed.

"Well, it's just the life I chose." She then gave you a curious look, eye lingering on the schoolbag at your side. "When your partner returned the Barrett-Arasaka 20mm rifle without any signs of wear and tear on the barrel, I was a bit surprised. Just a little bit disappointed as well, I was going to pay top eddie if you could record a BD of what that little puppy would do on a body. But I suppose that she's made up her mind about stepping away from the mess."

"It's for the better that we just walk away from spilling more blood when it's not going to do anything but cause more trouble," You explained with a sigh. "It's frustrating, but I think that Mitsu has become better by making a clear-headed choice instead of acting on instinct."

"Like the instinct to immediately purchase the biggest anti-cyberpsycho weapon we could offer to blow the brains out of somebody who hurt somebody she cared about," Azumi dryly remarked with a raised eyebrow. "You sure you two aren't input and output?"

You blinked and frowned. "I've heard that term before, but what does that mean?"

Azumi cackled and shook her head. "Oh, I'll let you two figure that out yourself, it's more fun that way." In-between her snickering, she withdrew a small datapad from her jacket and handed it over. "Anyway, here's what the suits and I managed to work out could go missing from the backroom stocks that nobody would miss, and nobody would care if you walked out wearing. As mentioned before, don't worry about the surgery costs, I'm footing that bill entirely. Only thing you need to do is cover the purchase. Oh, speaking of which."

Her eyes lit up and you nearly gasped to at see the numbers in your bank account finally rising. "It's been a long while coming, but here's your first paycheck from Shinohara Security. I hope that despite everything, you're still open to working with us to keep the streets safe," She firmly told when you beheld your first ever payment.

+1200eb (14950 +1200 = 16,150 eb)

You opened your mouth in shock and Azumi firmly interrupted. "Don't give me any of that 'it's too much' bullshit. You earned those eddies, go and blow it on whatever's nova these days."

"...thanks," You weakly said, not used to now being paid for services rendered. You shook your head and had to remind yourself that this money would definitely be going to whatever new chrome you decided to purchase and install as a replacement left arm. You activated the datapad now, taking a look at your options.

(Arasaka Stock: 23 +10 (Shinohara Security) = 33)

With every tap of the finger, your brow drew closer and closer together until you let out a disappointed sigh. "Just generic corpo cyberware, huh?" You drawled and Azumi winced.

"Unfortunately so, sorry. Apparently even though you literally lost an arm in service, HR decided to play the 'just a contractor' card and so my hands are tied unless you actually sign up with us." The woman let out some very colorful language for what she thought about upper management. "I've wiggled a few interesting options in there as well, but if none of them appeal to you, I understand if you just want to walk away."

"Give me a moment, let me think," You sighed and went through the options again, narrowing them down to what you found particularly worth considering.

The first, the Model 6b, was definitely the most boring option of the lot, being just a regular cyberarm replacement with all the necessary functionality such as data access ports and cords. It would be closest to what you had before, including the part where it looked almost like real blood and flesh. The option surprisingly wasn't the cheapest, pricing in at a hefty 3200eb.

You had to remind yourself that surgery fees, especially by professional Arasaka MedTechs could easily double the price if Azumi hadn't already volunteered to cover those. It still was a bitter bite and you gritted your teeth to check the other possibilities.

The next option, the Comet Z, was one that fully discarded the notion of regular human appearance and instead went for going maximum chrome, maximum functionality. You could even see the circuits and wriing behind a plastic covering, leading all the way up to a detachable hand of all things that could be swapped for different purposes, the included option being advertised to a hand that could shoot out on a cable to latch onto things a distance away. You could see the versatility of the option, but it definitely would be slightly unnerving to others along with a hefty price tag of 3800eb.

The last option that caught your eye was one that had you looking up to Azumi with a deadpan expression. "Really?" You asked with an incredulous expression and the corporate groaned, raising her arms and quoting an infamous individual who had apparently been inspiration for this replica model.

"'Mindless fucking consumerism wins again.' Seriously, it sells, and Arasaka rolls with the cash from it. Who would've thought."

You were definitely sure that had to be a Samurai quote from somewhere and idly wondered if you could text Momiji to see if she knew where. But either way, it definitely was, well, the preem option of the entire lot. Even if it certainly wasn't the original, the silver chrome arm was notorious in appearance alone, definitely adding to people's first impression of you. But it definitely came at a real preem price and you had to remind yourself that Arasaka was certainly drying away the tears of the Night City Holocaust if they sold these at an exorbitant 5000 eb each.

But it certainly had all the functionality of a regular cyberlimb and it was, well, nova as all hell. The question was if you wanted to spend the eddies on it now. You considered the three options and made your choice.

[ ] [Cyberlimb] The Model 6b, the straightforward option. Effects: None (3200eb)

[ ] [Cyberlimb] The Comet Z, the versatile option. Effects: -1 Empathy. Variety hand grapple options.
(3800eb)

[ ] [Cyberlimb] The Silverhand, the rebel option. Effects: +1 Empathy. (5000eb)

[ ] [Cyberlimb] None, you'll walk out today and find a new RipperDoc to carve you up.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- For those who don't know, Silverhand's arm was indeed Arasaka-made. You can make out the logo he purposefully scratched off. Now that he's a rebel rocker legend, what better way for Arasaka to subtly insult his memory than by turning it into a consumer fad?
- It is possible to modify your cyberware down the line if you're curious, but you really do need expertise in that or find some cyberware that can slot in. It likely won't happen for a while unless you purposefully go looking.

[X] [Cyberlimb] The Model 6b, the straightforward option.
[X] [Cyberlimb] The Silverhand, the rebel option.
TIE

"So in the end, you couldn't decide between two models and need our opinions to make a proper decision," Arisu summarized with a hum. "Because as it turns out, you can't just buy them all with your current bank account."

"Not if I want to be able to pay rent at the end of the month," You grumbled and moped slightly about in your medical bed. "I'm burning eddies real quick, and I'm not making them back anytime soon without both arms to work with."

"Do you require monetary aid?" Mitsu slowly asked, pressing her lips thinly. "I did get some funds back from returning the sniper rifle, so if you need some cash…"

"It's fine, so long as I just keep to buying one of these things." You gestured to the two boxes on the bed, each of them containing your possible new left arm. "But only one, and that's why you're all here. I need help in figuring out what I should buy."

"I see. Well, let's pop open the boxes and take a look at the chrome first then," The Lycoris Netrunner suggested. You agreed easily and the Arasaka-branded containers were cracked open to pull out your possible replacement arms. They were gingerly handled with care, though you were sure that according to the specifications they could both take a bit of wear and tear. "Hm, looks like this is the 6b one. It's already even got RealSkinn coated on, with the proper interface to adjust the color to whatever skin tone you prefer."

"And this must be the Silverhand!" Mitsu declared, restraint barely keeping her from holding it up triumphantly like a war trophy. "A replica arm of an infamous rockerboy, now turned into commercial product! Hm, the quality is rather extraordinary I must say!"

"Surprisingly so. Makes me wonder if it's another snub at the legend, some say that his arm was so bad that it drove him insane." You fell quiet for a moment and studied both arms before glancing at the stump of your shoulder. "I hope none of these push me over the edge like so. Cyberpsychosis is always a worry to take into consideration."

"It is definitely," The Lycoris Netrunner instantly sympathized with a head nod. "I've already seen so many of my classmates go a little too metal, trying to chip in everything to deal with the stress and anxiety from the academic standards. Luckily as their implants were usually of the academia fashion, they couldn't do much, but there is a reason why EMP turrets are installed in libraries to stun possible outbursts."

"Chrome is both a blessing, and a curse," Mitsu gravely intoned and gently placed down the fashionable arm. She looked at you with a slight tilt of the head, trying her best to imply a question without giving away sensitive information. "But for those of your class, you were gifted more than us no?"

You reflected that in fact, you did when you were a part of Lycoris. Being a Lycoris Second, you were augmented with more cyberware compared to the Thirds, but less than the extraordinarily rare Firsts. It was tied to how experience or talent often indicated a greater ability to handle more cyberware, so it was only natural to put the most useful cybernetics in those who had the greatest ability to make use of said implants.

That, along with them being usually affixed in a developing body, usually warded off the most extreme cases of cyberpsyhosis among Lycoris. Perhaps that was just yet another reason why agents had to be taken in at a very young age, so that they could grow and adapt to cyberware as if just another part of their bodies. Hell, you rarely really thought of your special opticware and the programs stored within as anything unnatural- they had been wired in at the right time for your brain to naturally adapt to as just part of your adult body.

However now, adding a cyberlimb was certainly going to feel unnatural as you didn't have the benefit of adolescent youth to swallow the changes on the go. You had to carefully figure out if adding new chrome would mess you up mentally. The Arasaka MedTechs had said that it was very rare that anybody would be driven to such means from just a simple cyberlimb attachment, but it was still something worth considering.

"For what it's worth, according to studies, cyberware with RealSkinn coating n show demonstrably less chance of inflicting lasting cyberpyschosis," Arisu mentioned with a hopeful pat on the limb she held. "So if you just want to play it safe, go with the Model 6b. It even is the more commonly available model, so I think you might have a better time trying to fiddle about with it."

"But this one is superb as well," Mitsu pointed out and ran a finger along the chromed cyberlimb. "It is more than just admiration of a Night City legend- it is a declaration of fashion, and of style! Something that marks you unhesitatingly out among a crowd as being not like common folk. Something rebellious and free, which we never could have been before. A statement that you walk your own path, perhaps making a new legend with said chrome."

"You'll only happen to be possibly mistaken as a poser for said figure, that's all," Arisu dryly countered with a shrug. "But I'll admit that chrome skin is preem, no matter what. Maybe I should get some chrome hands, how's that sound? It'd certainly reduce the chance of carpal tunnel from all the typing for programming."

"Just so long as you don't make them rocket fists," You joked with a laugh, remembering that discarded option. "Even that was just a bit too much for me."

"But imagine a punch of justice!" Your partner immediately whined. "That would be nova!"

"Lots of nova things you can do with cyberlimbs, and honestly? Both the 6b and Silverhand do have universal ports for such things. Worst comes to worst, you're handy with a screwdriver, right?" She made a spinning gesture. "Crack open that chrome and get modding. Change the color of your skin, add some little threading, or even cram a weapon inside. That's the real preem stuff where you do it yourself."

"Just like how you make your own programs?"

"Nothing can compare to seeing your labors finally bearing fruit," Arisu firmly insisted and it was easy to agree with that. Her eyes then trailed over to the cyberlimbs with her brow scrunching up. "Speaking of which…"

Her wrist bent at an angle and your fellow Lycoris pulled out a cable out of her arm. She jacked it into both replacement arms with a considering hum, eyes glowing. Mitsu frowned and voiced her suspicions. "You think they're bugged?'

"No harm in double checking." After a moment, Arisu shook her head. "They're clean, but they're filled with that typical 'anonymous data collection' junk. It obviously won't record your voice, but it'll record how much pressure and force is being applied at times. Probably stuff that could either useful research datapoints, or legal proof for revoking warranties."

"In short, practically ordinary corporate trickery," Mitsu flatly summarized with a roll of the eyes. "I say purge it all."

"I could, but I don't imagine Arasaka is going to be happy about that if you return the spare limb and they have to redo all that. Probably just best to only purge the one you plan on buying, so that they can at least just wash their hands of the matter." Her glowing eyes turned towards you. "So, which one will it be?"

You hummed, then made a final choice on the matter.

[ ] [Cyberlimb] The Model 6b.
--[ ] Change the appearance

[ ] [Cyberlimb] The Silverhand
--[ ] Change the appearance

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Looks like with the help of Xon, we got tallies back and working. Absolutely preem.
- You'll notice that this vote helps subdivides into appearances, so if you decide you want to spice/alter the cyberlimb appearance for free, now's the time. It should hopefully help so that if you want, you can recolor the Siliverhand to not be so Poser and just go for the mechanical effect. Or perhaps you want to actually make the RealSkinn arm some demonic color for style points. Remember, half of Cyberpunk is doing things stylishly, even in failure.

Four hour moratorium to consider style points.
