An average man is reincarnated in the world of DxD! How do you survive in a world of battle-hungry monsters? With a cheat skill, of course! Devour the competition, becoming stronger with every fight! From the depths of the Familiar Forest, the Beast King will rise. (Harem, Gamer!SI)
Devour New
"Another pillar has fallen, My Liege."

I sat comfortably on my large throne, my eyes gazing across the throne room.

"The whole underworld will be yours soon, Nya~" The near-nude catgirl strewn across my lap mewed.

"The underworld…?" I muttered, staring at the line of soldiers kneeling in front of my throne. I breathed out, steam blowing outward and becoming visible in the cold air.

"No, not just the underworld," I continued, my eyes glowing a slight red.

"THE WHOLE WORLD WILL BE MINE!"

However, I wasn't always the Beast King. In fact, not long ago, I had been…

—----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I groaned, forcing my eyes open as my head ached. My entire body felt sore as I stared up into the dark night sky. I felt like I had been hit by a truck.

…which, I think I had been? My head was pounding, but my last memory was a huge truck speeding at me.

I forced myself to sit up, looking around at my surroundings. Grass cushioning the ground under me, large trees towering around me, and…

"That's not normal," I muttered, staring up at the night sky. Instead of the usually pitch-black sky filled with stars, it was… weird.

Flashing lines crossed in the air, creating a northern-lights-esque effect, and there were no stars littering the sky. Instead of the usual black, the sky was a mixture of colors: some black, a hint of red, some green, and some purple.

I didn't have to be a genius to connect the dots.

"I got isekai'd," I concluded, staring up at the strange sky.

The sky didn't immediately confirm to me what world I was in - there were a lot of places with fucked up skys.

Well, there were worse things that could come from being hit by a semi-truck. At least I wasn't dead. And, hey, maybe I got reincarnated into one of those cheat-skill isekais!

"Stats!" I said confidently, staring at the space in front of me. A second passed, and then… nothing happened.

"Observe?" I asked, less confident this time. Once again, nothing happened.

"Not a game isekai, huh? Damn." I sighed, then jumped as I heard something rustle to the side of me. A bush moved, and then something crawled out from inside of it.

It looked like a wolf - and not a baby one. It was huge, like, absurdly huge. I'd seen some big dogs in my life, but this one looked to be close to 5 feet in height even while on all fours.

It was also thick - a big bushy layer of blue fur covering its entire body. Its red eyes locked onto me and it slowly stepped forward. A tag suddenly appeared above him.

[Dire Wolf] - Level 2

Wait, it is a game isekai? Never mind, no time to think about that.

I glanced down at my body, which looked exactly the same as it had in my past life. I was tall, standing at 6 foot 4 - wait, no, my body wasn't the same. While I had been 6 foot 4, my body seemed longer now.

I couldn't tell how much taller from just a glance, but I seemed more than a few inches taller. The rest of my body was the same, as I was decently muscular from playing sports all my life. I had a casual white T-shirt on and a pair of black shorts.

More importantly, my pockets were still full. I quickly shoved my right hand into my pocket, pulling out my large phone, while my left hand pulled out a small pocket knife that I kept on me.

These two items wouldn't be my first choice to defend myself against a giant wolf, but they were all I had. I flicked open the knife, holding it in front of me as I jumped to my feet.

The dire wolf growled, taking another step toward me.

"I'm not food, alright?" I said, pointing the knife at him. Preferably, I wouldn't like to fight a human-sized wolf, but I didn't think I'd be able to outrun him either. If I can't scare him off, then I'll be forced to fight with just this small knife.

My words didn't seem to reach the beast, and a second later he jumped forward. I stumbled to the side, the wolf's teeth tearing through the air as he landed next to me.

I leaned down, cocking my arm back and stabbing forward with the small knife. The knife shot forward, pushing into the wolf's huge fur coat and… breaking in half. The tip of the blade slammed into his fur, then turned unnaturally to the side as it snapped off, leaving me with just the small handle.

"Well… shit," I muttered, switching to plan B.

I turned around and ran like my life depended on it.

Hey, bitch move, I know, but I don't plan on dying today!

Unfortunately, this plan was also pretty shitty. While I wasn't a track star or anything in my past life, I was still decently fast. The dire wolf just happened to be a lot faster - like, supernaturally fast.

He barreled into my legs, tripping me as I fell flat on my back.

-5HP! (95/100)

Ok, definitely a game isekai. Not the time to think about that though, as theres a giant wolf jumping on me. I shoved my hands up, my hands pressing into the wolf's chest as the giant beast jumped on top of me.

A growl came from the wolf's throat as its teeth snapped down, inches away from my face as I held it back. Drool dripped down onto my cheek, and I grunted as I shoved upwards again and pushed the wolf away a little.

Fuck, what now?

My eyes looked around as my muscles tensed, barely holding away the wolf. The only things nearby were the small handle of the pocket knife and my phone which I had dropped when the wolf tackled me

I pushed my head back into the grass under me as the wolf snapped forward again, its maw inches from my face as its clawed foot tore into my chest while it stood on me.

-10HP! (85/100)

Fuck, fuck, fuck, shit. I just got isekai'd, and I'm already gonna die to some fucking starter mob?! Come on, where's the bullshit cheat skill that activates out of nowhere to save me?!

Oh, there it is.

Suddenly, a burning sensation formed in my chest. I nearly started choking as saliva flooded into my mouth, salivating suddenly as the wolf in front of me looked… tasty. As if a giant sentient steak was right in front of me.

My body relaxed as I went onto auto-pilot, following the quest's instructions as I let my instincts control my next actions.

I snapped my head forward, releasing the force in my hands that was keeping the wolf away. As the wolf's teeth snapped at me, I leaned down and ducked my head under him.

My mouth opened, and my teeth bit down on the fur around its neck. I could see how the knife broke earlier - his fur was hard as if he was coated in a layer of metal. Despite the knife breaking in half earlier, my teeth surprisingly tore through the fur easily. The fur tore away, leading to flesh as I bit into the wolf's neck.

It tasted… strangely good. The mix of blood, metallic fur, and raw wolf meat didn't sound appealing, but I felt like I was biting into a tasty burger as I tore away at his neck.

The wolf didn't just idly let me do it, his claws slamming down into my chest as he let out a pained growl. He tore through my thin T-shirt, drawing blood as he slashed across my chest.

-10HP! (75/100)

However, I barely even felt it. My body felt numb as my mind was filled with hunger. After the first bite, I felt as if I'd been starved for weeks, and a four-course meal was right in front of me.

I wrapped my arms around the wolf, pulling it into my body as I continued to tear away at his flesh. The wolf let out another pained growl, trying to push away from me as his claws cut into my body again.

-5HP! (70/100)

However, its growls slowly became softer, turning into whimpers and then silence as my teeth continued tearing into its flesh.

Blood splattered across my face, burning into my cheeks as I continued to satiate my hunger.

Bite after bite, the wolf's body started to slump. Then, it slumped over entirely, life leaving it's eyes.

A second later, I blinked and pulled my face back as the wolf's body started to glow. A blue light surrounded it, and then the body disappeared entirely.

[Harden] - Harden any part of your body, making it as tough as a rock!

Fuck yeah. I did it.

My breaths slowly became shallower as I stared at the stats, my heartrate going down as I relaxed. Despite having just gone to town on an entire wolf, I still felt strangely hungry.

I pushed my hunger aside, there were more important things on my mind.

I had just gotten a new skill - Devour. Evidently, it seems that once I eat something, I get part of their stats. The dire wolf was huge and strong as hell, but it was still just level 2, so I didn't get that many.

I need to figure out how to view my own stats. I raised my arm, wiping off some of the blood on my face onto my sleeve as I started trying every code word I could think of.

"Stat page!" Nothing.

"Inventory!" Still nothing.

"Skills?" Not a thing.

"HP?" No screens popped up.

I continued saying words softly into the forest, careful to keep my voice down so as to not attract anymore wolves.

After another 10 tries, I finally gave up. Any good game would make its system intuitive, right? I'm sure it'll just pop up eventually like the quest did.

Now, I need to figure out where I am. The weird sky and random dire wolf didn't do much to narrow down what world I was in, but at least I knew it was a fantasy-ish one.

Any normal world wouldn't have a big-ass dire wolf like that, right?

Well, the first course of action should be getting out of this forest. I'll climb a tree to get a vantage point, and see if I see any sign of civilization nearby.

I glanced around the dark forest, finding the tallest tree I could, which was very tall. As in, probably 20-30 feet tall. I don't know if I can climb that high.

Luckily for me, it seems like my body got a supernatural buff when I was isekai'd. In hindsight, I should've realized that when I was able to hold back the dire wolf.

It wasn't easy by any means, but in my past life I probably would've had my head bit off by the giant beast.

I climbed the tree pretty easily, my hands instinctively grabbing branches and holds in the tree. Once I was near the top, I looked around.

I couldn't make out much in the darkness, but I could still get a good idea of what was around me.

There was no civilization or sign of humans anywhere. The trees around me led to more trees, showcasing to me that the forest was giant. Looks like I'll be here for a while.

However, that wasn't necessarily a bad thing. I didn't know anything about this world, so I didn't know if any humans I met would be friendly or not. Using Devour to get stronger in the forest was a good place to start.

[Quest Alert!]

Use [Devour] on 5 creatures.

Rewards:

Failure:

Oh, there's a gacha in this game? That's good, I love gambling.

Evidently, the system seemed to agree with my thought process, so I moved out to start finding more creatures to use Devour on.

I quickly scaled down the tree, dropping into the grass once again. I started walking forward, moving through the forest as my eyes were wide and scanning around me.

I tried my best to be stealthy, but it was hard when you're nearly seven feet tall. I stopped in place as I heard some grass rustle in the darkness ahead of me, and two more dire wolfs came walking toward me.

[Dire Wolf] - Level 2

[Dire Wolf] - Level 1

Two more wolves and one's weaker than the other. That one was easy to see, as one wolf was much smaller than the other one, looking to be only 2-3 feet in height.

A sudden hunger formed in my gut, saliva filling my mouth as the desire to eat the two wolves formed.

I tensed my arms, watching the two wolves intently. I had struggled to just take down the one earlier, but now that I know about Devour two should be possible.

The smaller one let out a growl and then lunged at me. I tensed my arm, willing my [Harden] skill to activate. Luckily, it did.

I held up my arm, the dire wolf chomping down on it. I barely felt anything as the wolf's teeth didn't break through my skin.

I raised my other fist, the skin around my fist hardening as I punched the wolf in the jaw. It went reeling back, and the other dire wolf lunged forward at me.

I stepped to the side, letting the wolf fly past me, and then willed my foot to harden. I kicked the wolf in the side, sending him skidding away.

The first wolf jumped at me again, its mouth open as it tried to bite my head off. I ducked under it, my arms reaching up as I bear-hugged the wolf from below. I squeezed the beast, keeping it pressed against me as my head bent down.

My teeth tore into the side of the wolf, tearing off a chunk of meat and fur. I swallowed it easily in one gulp, my arms holding the wolf against me as I continued to tear into its flesh.

I grinned, clenching and unclenching my fist. I wiped the blood off my mouth, a slightly filling feeling filling me as I consumed the wolves.

I must have started with pretty low STR, because even from just gaining 3 I felt nearly twice as strong. I continued into the forest, not being as stealthy as I felt more confident.

I was right to feel confident, as over the next ten minutes I would find two more [Dire Wolf] - Level 2's and easily devour them. As I finished the last one, the quest completion appeared.

Wait, how was I even going to use the gacha pull? I reached forward, tapping on the quest completion screen before it disappeared.

Oh, I'm in the familiar forest. This could be really good, or… really bad. Really good because there are so many different familiars I could use devour on, so I could get a huge variety of skills.

Really bad, because some of those familiars are going to be way stronger than just a dire wolf, and because I could run into devils looking for familiars.

Well, there would have been bodies, but they promptly turned into a blue light and disappeared.

[Dire Wolf] Line Evolution

Failure:

It had only been a few hours since I woke up in the DxD world, and every quest so far had been related to dire wolves. Those were also the only creatures I'd seen so far, which I was happy about.

I also didn't know what 'Dire Wolf Line Evolution' meant, but I had no other leads of what I should be doing, so follow the quests it is!

However, I was starting to feel tired from hunting for so long. Where am I going to sleep? Should I just climb a tree and hope nothing attacks me?

Oh, nice!

The system had been very generous in the amount of quests it was giving, but luckily it had a [Quest Log] feature so I could check them at any time.

I continued walking through the forest, looking around for a good place to set up my territory. Eventually, after running into another dire wolf, I found a small open area.

It was a decently sized plot of grass without any trees in the middle, so I'd have room to sleep comfortably.
"Now, how do I claim it?" I muttered, looking at the floor.

Claim?

[You have claimed a plot of land!]

[You will be alerted if anyone enters your land!]

I blinked as the ground under me changed, glowing a faint green light in a small square. It outlined a 5-foot by 5-foot square.

[Territory Newbie] Title

A safe place to rest.

Nice! What does the title do?

I tapped on it.

[Territory Owner] - Those with this title can claim land in a 7x7 radius.

I watched as the land under me glowed green again, expanding outwards another 2 feet in every direction.

I walked into the middle of the square, sitting down and making myself comfortable. It still wasn't a safe place, as it would just notify me instead of actually keeping anyone out of my land, but it was better than nothing.

I had to get some sleep somehow.

I laid down, the grass feeling like a soft pillow to my exhausted body, and fell asleep soon after.

—----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

[ALERT!] [Dire Wolf - Level 4] has entered your land!]

I shot up, jumping to my feet instantly as I was ripped out of my sleep. I still felt pretty tired, so I estimated that only a couple of hours has passed.

I glanced around, quickly spotting the wolves. Yes, wolves.

[Dire Wolf] - Level 4

[Dire Wolf] - Level 1

[Dire Wolf] - Level 2

[Dire Wolf] - Level 1

[Dire Wolf] - Level 4

[Dire Wolf] - Level 2

The dire wolves looked the same as usual, aside from the two-level four ones being a bit bigger. However, there was one that was glaringly different.

[Rena] [Dire Wolf Pack Leader] - Level 10

This one was a lot bigger than the other wolves - standing at around six feet tall with long legs and sharp claws. It's fur was a deeper tinge of blue.

A different type of dire wolf, and a named one at that. I tensed my arms, looking down at the closest one and waiting for it to strike, but it just stood there growling at me.

"You dare to try and take land from the Great Wolf King, human?!" A growl came out, sounding like a mixture of a deep-voiced female with a tinge of monster.

I blinked, looking at where the voice had come from.

"Did you just talk to me?" I asked bluntly, staring at the dire wolf Pack Leader. Every dire wolf so far had done nothing but growl, bark, and howl at me.

"Will you not answer the question, human?!" Rena growled out again, taking a step toward me, "Then you shall die! Kill him!"

Damn, not even letting me get in a word to defend myself? Whatever.

I used [Harden] on my fist as the nearest wolf, a level four one, lunged at me. I flung my fist directly into its face, sending it flying backward. Luckily, the dire wolf's weren't very smart.

Two more came lunging at me, a level two and a level one, but I jumped to the side. The level two one flew past me, and I reached my arms out to catch the level one in my arms.

-1 HP! (178/179)

The wolf's claws dug into my chest, but they barely did anything now that my END was raised a lot from killing dire wolf's.

I leaned forward, my teeth tearing through its fur into the wolf's neck. Since my STR had increased so much over the previous day, it only took a quick bite to take down the wolf completely.

I raised my hardened fist, swinging it around as the wolf that had lunged past me tried to jump on my back. I slammed my fist into its face again, sending it skidding away.

It stumbled for a moment, dazed by the blow, and I lunged at him. I landed on his back, pulling to wolf into a bear hug as my teeth tore into it.

I shot up onto my feet again as the first level four wolf came running at me. I swung my leg outward, slamming a hardened foot into his face and sending him stumbling away.

A second later, my feet were thrown out from under me as a level two barreled into my legs.

-3 HP! (177/180)

I barely even felt the impact, putting my hands on the ground under me to break my fall. I pushed myself up again, spinning around and lunging at the second level four wolf as it charged me.

We met in the middle, it's body slamming into mine as I grappled it. It's teeth bit down into my shoulder, causing me to grunt in pain.

-10 HP! (167/180)

Blood flowed down my side, but I ignored it as I leaned forward, my own teeth tearing through its fur and flesh. It didn't go down instantly like the level one, and that gave opportunity for one of the other wolves to help.

-5 HP! (162/180)

I grimaced as a claw cut into my back, the first level four barreling at me to try and help his comrade. I ignored it, intent on finishing the one trapped in my arms.

This was why the [Devour] skill wasn't just overpowered, but a complete cheat-skill. In a situation like this, where multiple enemies were trying to take me down, I could heal off of each one I defeated.

The skin around my shoulder glowed, repairing itself as I spun around at the other level four. The wolf lunged forward, it's teeth bared, and my hand shot up.

I shot my hand at his mouth, wrapped my large palm around both sides, and forced his mouth shut. It struggled as I forcefully held his mouth shut, my other arm punching into its chest.

The wolf stumbled, and I shot forward. My teeth tore into his fur, ripping through the metallic-like layer and into his flesh.

The already-injured wolf didn't last long.

"Y-You useless mutts!" Rena growled out, her voice echoing in the small open area, "I can't believe I, Pack Leader Rena, chosen by the Great Wolf King himself, need to get involved for a mere human!"

Arrogant much?

Rena lunged forward, and my eyes widened in surprise. I threw myself to the side, barely dodging the wolf.

She was fast. Way faster than the other wolves, and I hadn't gained any AGI so far. dire wolf's only gave STR and END.

Rena lunged at me again, and I hastily threw my hardened fist at her. Her claw ripped past my side as my fist grazed her face.

-20 HP! (168/188)

Damn, that actually hurt!

I shook off the pain, seeing that my punch had barely fazed Rena. She ran at me again, lashing out with another claw. I tried to lean out of the way, but it still grazed me.

-10 HP! (158/188)

I grunted as a cut appeared on my arm. I couldn't keep going like this - she was too fast. I glanced around, looking for something to help me.

Luckily, I found it instantly.

I sprinted forward, running not at Rena but at the level one dire wolf, who had been watching as he let his pack leader fight.

The wolf was taken by surprise, not being able to dodge as I grappled it and my teeth tore through its fur and flesh.

I lunged forward, wrapping the wolf in a grapple as she slammed her teeth into my arm.

-15 HP! (148/188)

Even with [Harden], Rena's teeth still tore through my flesh. As her back slammed into the floor and I was pinning her down, my mouth shot forward and started tearing into her flesh.

She didn't just let me eat, as her claws tore into my chest and her huge fangs cut across my arm.
-15 HP! (133/188)

-25 HP! (108/188)

Fuck, that hurts. Hurry up and die, damn wolf!

I continued tearing my teeth into her flesh, but she finally slammed both paws into my chest and flung me off. I grunted, blood dripping down from my mouth as Rena shot backward, creating space between us.

"You… You annoying human!" Rena growled. She wasn't unscathed from the exchange, as red blood coated her fur and her legs shook slightly.

I jumped to my feet, ignoring the pain from all my cuts, and started sprinting forward. However, instead of at Rena, I went toward the final dire wolf.

It was just as unaware as the first one had been, and I was able to take it down quickly.

I spun around again, lunging forward and wrapping Rena in another grapple. This time, she put up less of a fight, as she was already near death from the previous exchange.
-15 HP! (115/190)

I ignored her claws tearing into my chest as she struggled, tearing into her fur and flesh with my teeth. I was filled with a satisfied feeling, as if I'd just had a large meal.

[Devour] has been used on [Rena] [Dire Wolf Pack Leader] - Level 10.

You have gained:

+100HP (190/190)

+10 MAX HP (200/200)

+3 STR

+4 END

+2 AGI

+1 INT

+10 XP

+ 10 [Harden] Skill XP!

+ 1 [Devour] Skill XP!

+ [Global Communication] skill!

[Global Communication] - Communicate with all intelligent beings from any race!

Note: [Global Communication] will only work on [Named] beings!

I grinned, looking at the list of stats I gained and the new skill. I didn't know there was anything intelligent enough to talk in the forest, but hey, being able to make some friends in the future wouldn't be bad.

Another quest completion popped up a second later.

[Quest Complete!]

[25/25]

Reward:

[Dire Wolf] Line Evolution

[Dire Wolf] Line Evolution - You can now acquire more skills from [Dire Wolf]'s, and can evolve them!

I don't know what the means exactly, but it could only be a good thing.

All [Territory] owned by the Great Wolf King

+500 STR

+500 END

+500 AGI

All [Wolf] related skills will be raised to level 10!

Well, at least I know what my next goal is.
