Democracy's Torch (Sky plays Darkest Hour)

I'll say now that we will build a Navy. Leaving out the fact I like naval stuff- clearly :V -there's enough people in the Reichsmarine and Reichstag who would want a navy that it's unavoidable, even if from a gameplay perspective it needs to be behind more important things.

It's worth noting, as I said before, that the historical KM wasn't intended to fight the Brits or Americans. It was intended to bully the French and Russians, and for that it was more than sufficient. And since everyone from Raeder on down didn't think Britain would fight Germany (hello pre-WW1 German thoughts) the KM wasn't built with that in mind.

Though to balance roleplay and gameplay, certain sacrifices need to be made. No chance in hell I'm getting out of building at least one battleship for instance.

*desperately resists urge to propose Große Kürfurst*

Question: How exactly do you stand naval fights? It's always been the part of games where I am weakest. I can never do anything requiring the navy, and I always end up with too weak of one. One time, I even invaded India through the Himalayas with tanks because my navy was way too weak and there wasn't enough time to catch up.

Because I came from HoI III and the navy in there is even worse :V

(no, seriously. It takes a ludicrous amount of IC and time to build any ships in III)

Dude, you're gonna give me 'Nam-style flashbacks. HoI III was terrible. I regret ever buying it. Seriously though, what do you recommend as a composition for a basic navy for a great power?

Carrier centered force with a couple battleships for that odd close in encounter with the enemy and plenty of cruisers and destroyers.

That's why Reinhard von Smalhausen is looking forward to getting a chance to catch up with a younger cousin in the US Navy.

All so Germany actually finishes a version of Graf Zeppelin this time. Not to mention Peter Strasser and Manfred von Richthofen. Yes I want a CV where the entire air group is called the Flying Circus and has red identifying markings on the planes. :D

You still haven't told me if Ronald is acceptable!
Well, here's a character I might go with, assuming he gets approved.
Name: Ronald Bretschneider
Party: ...Technically independent, but tends to orbit somewhere between the SPD and DNVP
Biography: Born in Frankfurt at exactly midnight on January First of 1900, Ronald is undoubtedly an... interesting sort. Despite his youth, he did fight in the great war, enlisting on his eighteenth birthday, and leaving the service when the war came to an end. It's not quite clear what happened during his service due to the building holding his service records receiving a hit from some stray artillery, but he came back from the war distinctly changed.

Today, Ronald is commonly viewed as a delusional nutcase, and for good reason. He insists that he is in fact a naturalized martian from the thirty-first century, and claims to take advice from an invisible pink unicorn. Other outrageous claims of his include being deployed to the north pole in a zeppelin during the war as part of a secret mission to stop Santa Claus from shipping war materiel to the British, as well as having peed on the first draft of Mein Kampf.

Since the war, Ronald has run in every single election that has taken place, for every single position that has been up for an opening. His horribly inept campaigns have been something of a running joke throughout the Weimar years, with 'voting for Ronald' becoming something of a euphemism for doing something completely ineffectual. However, in 1933, with the only opponent for the Reichstag seat Ronald was running for being a particularly despised nazi, Ronald won a seat in the Reichstag by exactly one vote. The vote was going to be re-calculated, which could have seen Ronald not enter office, save for the fact that his nazi opponent was killed in the March Revolts. By Ronald.

Personality:
-Constantly makes outrageous claims that couldn't possibly be true, and seems to believe them wholeheartedly.
--That said, these stories do tend to draw and retain a large audience...
-Genuinely cares about his principles, such as democracy, liberty, and cats
-Can be disturbingly bloodthirsty at times, and openly advocates for executing all nazis by throwing them out of a plane at 35,000 feet.

OOC: because every anime needs a cloudcookoolander.

Also, STIMULUS

Find a good mod for it. I know sky recommends HPP for it. I recommend BlackIce :V
I prefer adding to the narrrative. From what I can tell, most mods for it modify the nations starting statistics, abilities, techs, and soldiers. Also, the mechanics kinda force everything to go one direction or the other. There's very little flexibility. Darkest Hour is perfect for what I want. Now, enough about HoI III lest we anger the OP or mods for going off-topic.

I'm angling to update tomorrow for what it's worth (provided I don't get swamped by something).

First though, since Kaiserreich released a new version I've been trolling around on it a bit. Because their releases are rare enough that I need to try them when they come up :V

Since Australasia (Australia+New Zealand) was completely revamped, I decided to try them. And well...

Canada is the leader of the Entente and the seat of the British Empire in KR-verse. They also happened to get eaten by Red America in this playthrough (I didn't have enough troops to send to support them). As the next most powerful nation in the Entente, I ended up inheriting their fleet...

Which is a thing in DH, by the way. Next most powerful nation in an alliance inherits whatever is left of the leader's fleet if they're forced to surrender. This can lead to such amusing situations as Nepal with the Royal Navy

...and well, that happened. That poor cruiser (and Mount Logan) had to have sailed across the entire Pacific, being chased by Syndicalist (Communism failed in KR since Germany helped Russia against the Bolsheviks. Syndicalism, that historically died out in the '30s or so, took it's place in France and Britain among others) forces. And done it in a condition that would have made Enterprise blush. Like, 1 strength. That's a ship held together by nothing more than sheer determination and the hopes and prayers of her crew.

She was promptly (in RP terms) turned into a museum. Mount Logan was modern enough to be returned to duty though.

Next:

:V

That is all.

ADVANCE AUSTRALIA FAIR

(there's an event to take Indonesia from the Dutch)

And finally:

Right now the von Wittelsbachs have the prestige, respect and sanity to be the best choice for the position of Kaiser. And even then, the monarchists are fairly convinced that the best they can get is more a British style constitutional monarchy.

Not a bad choice, but it terms of noble rank, at this time Bavaria is still considerd a kingdom, with Rupprecht von Wittelsbach as the current king. So Albrecht of Wurttemberg would be work out, but it most likely would occur if Rupprecht declined the job.

Did someone mention a Bavarian Kaiser? :p

Red France can split Germany up if they win. Prussia can then have a military revolt, whereupon they have the options of staying under the dictatorship or moving back to a monarchy or (the rarest option) a Republic. They managed to pick the rarest monarchist option here. Constitutional instead of Absolute, and with Rupprecht instead of August of Hannover or a Russian duke.

I just found it hilarious because of the discussion in here. That and a Bavarian in charge of Prussia allied with Russia reuniting Germany and thus having a Bavarian Kaiser.

(why did I post these? As a sort of 'sorry it's taken so long to update' thing)

That is pretty hilarious Sky. I know that in my playthrough in Victoria 2 as Bavaria and thence to German Empire, I've absorbed as much of the German speaking parts of Austria I've could. Cuz southern Germany is best Germany. :V

Part 3: Economics for Dummies
Right, let's get going...

Passing with an overwhelming majority in the Reichstag- even many Nazi party representatives voted for it, in the interest of maintaining their failing support among the populace -the stimulus plan was quickly implemented by the Wels Chancellery. Suffering German citizens found the government pouring money and resources into improving their lives instead of pulling away from them. Factories were reopened and construction began apace on roads and bridges. German civilians who found it difficult to find work or even warm homes in the worst of the Depression were given new jobs at a pace quicker than any other European nation.

The economic effects would be hard at first. Germany would need to print more and more money to make up for the rapid spending of the new plans. However, the stimulus had great impact on stabilizing the torn and tattered support for the Republic. Many a German still bore great discontent and suspicion for their government. But the sight of Reichsheer soldiers moving through towns and handing out food and other supplies to destitute civilians did much to change this. Furthermore, the increase in public works improved both the livelihood of German citizens and their ability to find a paying job to support their families.

This could hardly be understated in the impact it had on the Republic.

(those convoys o_o)

The still-recovering German industry was primarily focused towards consumer goods production. This, part of the stimulus, had the intention of securing the livelihood of the average German before increasing the military or anything along those lines. With the specter of Versailles looming over the Republic's fragile coalition-government, this was even more true. As a result, the only military projects undertaken in the stimulus were the continued construction of the Panzerschiffe and the light cruiser Nürnberg.

What remained available of the dilapidated industry was committed towards rebuilding and refurbishing factories. New construction took place as well. Chancellor Wels was far more interested in constructing workplaces for the German people than in building weapons that could only be used against other nations.

The DNVP lodged formal protest over this course of action, of course.

Deustchland at sea. The newest warships in the Reichsmarine, they are unique in the world for their firepower and speed combination on such a small hull.

In any case, the German population was not willing to support runaway military growth either. Very few men were willing to don the uniform of the Reichsheer, and it was difficult enough merely replacing the few losses taken during the attempted Nazi coup. Increasing the size of any part of the military would be impossible for the foreseeable future because of this lack of willing manpower. Leaving alone the question mark of how an increase would be viewed by the nations that had imposed Versailles. France loomed large in the minds of every German politician.

This combination, of course, left few happy. The more militaristic parties were upset that Germany would not return to her former military glory. At least for the moment. And the Socialist wing felt that there could be more done to reinvigorate German industry without a need to build more military units of any kind. There were those who crossed party lines to either side, but it did little to change the simple fact that Germany was not- and likely would not be for some time -ready to begin recruiting more men into the already limited-by-treaty Heer.

The efforts of the German economy to recover did not just center on the military or on industry. While further austerity measures had been rejected- vehemently so in fact -the government still found cause to print more money. It was a certain risk to take. The German industry would take a temporary downturn due to the inflation this caused, in an already inflated economy. However, printing money not tied to American loans or English banks would at least provide for funds to push into the stimulus plans. It was in large part this new money that, in fact, went into revitalizing the German industrial sector.

A risk to be sure, but one that needed to be taken to restore Germany to where the nation should have been.

However....

In October of 1933, as the German economy continued to pick its way off the ground, the former Entente powers called for a meeting in Strasbourg. The formerly German city- now a center of French culture -had been chosen for clearly symbolic reasons. A formerly German-owned city, on the border between the demilitarized Rhineland and France. A city near the occupied Saarland. One that, in calling the Germans to it, was a very clear indication of what the meeting was likely to entail. It would not be one about the German economy or the unseating of the Nazis.

It could only involve the Versailles Diktat on some level...

I did say this would be the first major test, didn't I? :V

Clearly, we've got two options to take here. Sign the treaty and make the Allies very happy...or don't sign it. In the original mod that was about all there was to it. You'd sign, get some money and dissent, and make the Allies happy. Or you'd not sign, not get your money, and lose dissent. While spitting in France's eye for good measure.

For something this major, that always struck me as relatively...iffy. It doesn't demonstrate just how big a thing that this would be for Germany. As such, I've added in new event paths for both options. Which are:

Sign the Treaty:

Dissent, money, happy Allied Powers...and my new events.

Do not sign:

No money, Germany looks hostile (though +1 belligerence doesn't mean a whole lot), annoy the Allied powers- France more than Britain -and my events.

To make this a bit simpler on me, when you vote do it in the quest style. i.e.

[x] Vote

That way I can use the quest vote counting tool instead of digging through the thread :V

Still roleplay if you want- I encourage it actually, those are always nice to read! -but roleplay or no roleplay, vote like the above.

"My fellow Germans! We cannot bow to foreign aggression. Germany is still a nation of Europe, not a backwater province or African colony to roll over when Britain and France speak! We must reject this clear violation of our sovereignty! As such, I call on all the members of the DNVP, and all Germans who wish to see our great nation restored, to vote..."

[X] Do Not Sign
