Democracy's Torch (Sky plays Darkest Hour)

"I'm telling you that such policy would be a waste! All we need to do is tighten our belts more, get rid of superfluous funding like Bismark's remnants and our nation should be able to pick itself back up!"

"And scrape the bottom of the barrel? And what funds!? All of its already going to those damn swine over the Rhein! We need this if the nation is going to even have the strength to 'pick itself back up.' And the rest of the party would see you out as soon as you open your mouth about removing their welfare!"

"That's pure horseshit! The party would rally around removing that unnecessary spending if we say it in terms of destroying the last vestiges of that bastard's Kulturkampf."

"It may seem unnecessary for you Herr Schopenhauer considering you are well off but to the thousands without work and forced to burn Marks for heat ... it means a great deal. And I must agree with Herr Weber, I've already heard that Herr Hochstetter and Herr Hoffman will be voting for any stimulus bills much like at least five others in our party at my last count. This is also ignoring all the other parties which we can see as generally 'for' as well such as the ... SPD and even one or two rogues from the DNVP! "

My hand goes through my short brown hair as my matching eyes stare out the window of the tavern my compatriots and I have found ourselves in. I didn't see myself becoming a politician but neither did I see myself being ran out of my home and working as a middle manager. I guess it was my luck that I received enough backing to pass.

Luck. Bah. Krupp needed a voice and ear in the Reichstag and I fit the bill. Someone tied to them due to a debt.

I sigh and then look back to my compatriots. The plump and balding man that is Herr Schopenhauer looks ready to explode. Nobility from Bayern, he was lucky to have loyal enough guards to ride the Revolution out fairly safe. He's also smart enough to actually bother keeping stock with the few companies still selling ... and if rumors are true some outside the fatherland as well. Herr Weber meanwhile just remains calmly sitting while cleaning his glasses. I wait for him to push them back into his blonde hair before continuing.

"Gentlemen. The nation is desperate for something. If we stick with Austerity it is nearly certain that the Republic will remained mired in the mud. If that happens then we might actually see the NSDAP come to power."

Weber scoffs and shakes his head.

"Based on latest happenings, it might actually be more likely the KPD will move in."

My eyes twitch and I can't help myself from growling.

"Don't talk to me about the communists."

Weber flinches and even Schopenhauer is taken aback. Weber gulps before standing up.

"Well ... Herr Schopenhauer, Herr Krähe. I believe I know where you two stand. Herr Krähe, it will be a pleasure to be voting with you to give a much needed boost to the economy."

Weber and I share nods while Schopenhauer grumbles.

"Rubbish."

VOTING FOR ECONOMIC STIMULUS

Name: Wilhelm von Langern
Party: DNVP
Age: 35
Appearance: Tall (6'2"), brown-haired, handsome, wears his Naval uniform.
Brief Biography: Born in Mecklenburg-Schwerin, served as a Kapitänleutnant in the Kaiserliche Marine as a gunnery officer on SMS Roon, spent a lot of time in Britain and sort of idolizes them due to their naval superiority, adapts British mannerisms.
As for the stimulus bill, after much thought and consideration, I have decided to vote
[X] In favor of stimulus.
Because we need more ships!

Name: Theodore "Theo" von Shultz
Party: Zentrum
Age: 37
Appearance: Black Hair and Blue eyes. Scar across his left cheek from when a bullet grazed his left cheek on the Ostfront. You can typically see him wearing his Officer coat from his later years in the Great War.

Bio:
Born to a minor agrarian noble family in a town outside Königsberg East Prussia, and one of the minority of Catholic Prussian noble families, he followed his father's footsteps and served in the Imperial German Army as a lower cavalry officer and saw service in the Great War on the Eastern Front against the Russian Empire. In the First Battle of the Masurian Lakes Theo managed become a local celebrity in his home town after managing to lead a company of Cavalry in a surprise charge which routed a force of Russian Infantry twice their size. That same Battle he would also be inflicted with a notable scar from when a Russian bullet just barely missed him, grazing him on the cheek. As the war progressed, his company would abandon the traditional cavalry tactics and would adopt the style of mounted infantry. Over the years on the Ostfront he whitnessed the Russian war effort fall apart as the Romanov Dynasty, and eventually the Provisional government fall amidst social turmoil and Communist uprising. This left a deep mark on him, as he from then on held a deep suspicion towards populist politics, and an even greater revulsion for Communists. After the war he would return home a bitter man, seeing the same forces that tore apart Russia setting their sights on the country he loved. He continued to fight against the Spartakist revolts in one of the numerous Freikorps which formed in the aftermath of the war, but would become disillusioned with such militias after his own unit began acting in a manner befitting of thugs, harassing civilians and killing aimlessly in the name of right wing populism. He would his career in politics with the Zentrum hoping to fight against far left and far right populism on a national level. A promoter of the idea of Constitutional Monarchy under one of the Hohenzollern Princes or one of the other German dynasties. He hopes to try to reach a compromise with the more moderate members of the left to bring back the monarchy after the end of President Hindenburg's term, seeing such a restoration as a means of pulling away more of the Right away from coalesceing around the Fascist NSDAP.

Personality:
A cool level headed man, with a love for beer and cigars. He is incredibly straightforward and honest. He is not afraid to speak his mind and defend his beliefs, which has resulted in numerous bar fights in his younger rowdier days. He fights for his allies, and for those who have kept their their end of any agreement with him.

Theodore von Shultz [ZENTRUM] sat at his office in Berlin, having just finished a letter from his family in Königsberg. Thankfully, the city was far from the area of the heaviest fighting but had yet suffered damages from some of the lighter SA activities in the City. The Heer, numerous militias, and the spirited individuals had done their part in putting down the fighting, and he planned on writing a public statement honoring their work.

That aside, there was a pressing matter at hand which needed to be attended too. The economy was in shambles, certainly not helped by the damage caused by the numerous Right Wing uprisings which had to be put down.

"Fucking animals..." he muttered, lifting his cigar to his lips and breathing in a long drag of tobacco. It reminded him too well of the turmoil after the Treaty of Versailles, and the Spartakist revolts.

Before him lay details of two options present on the table to rectify the economic situation. One of Austerity, and the other detailing proposals for a stimulus package. He studied both hard and made his decision. "Tightening out belts will do nothing to rectify the crippling state of our economy. We need to start fixing this nightmare, and we needed to start doing this years ago."

He put down his cigar and went to work. He would have to coordinate with other members of his party, such as Mr. Hoffman (@Cornuthaum) and a few he knew in the DNVP to bring as many people on board as possible. He would also try to bring the idea of an increased military budget and soldiers benefits to the left, which he knew would sway more minds among the righter leaning ministers in the government. He knew a SPD colleague, Diana Schee (@Always Late), who could help coordinate such. She was a renowned Feminist and potentially offering support in opening up military roles for women would certainly incentivize her. He would have to write a few letters.

[X] VOTED STIMULUS

So, curious here Sky, have you also modded in a different events chain to lead to WW2, given that a democratic Germany probably wouldn't be very inclined to kick things off? And if so... what is it? Stalin gets expansive in '42? Japan goes crazier? Mussolini wants more Sphagetti? Heads up that, with the possible exception of the Soviets, you'll have to give these countries buffs for things to work out...

There's an existing event to kick off alt!WW2. Will become relevant later, but if I actually say what it is, it'll influence votes with future!knowledge.

...so to speak.

And here I am having already gone through said mod and scenario. Lucky for you that I don't remember much nor did I worry about things such as "cheating is bad" or "challenge." Not so much lucky for me ...

Huh... now I'm intrigued. Could you PM me a link? Even if that means I'll have to download DH again and get it working on my new computer...

You know what that means!

I couldn't resist the obvious reference.:D

Well, that was pretty inevitable...

So you don't want me to tell what the event chain is that kicks off WW2 in this mod. Got it. Too bad only the Mixed Mod's integrated version of Democratic Germany has an event to recreate the Central Powers. That would have been cool to do.

I just don't want to say what it is, because then it will influence votes to go in a certain direction towards the inevitable kick off of the war. Alliances and all that stuff.

I'd prefer that votes are done in as much of a 'vacuum' as possible, since it makes them more fun. Maybe that's just me.

Name: Bertold von Kirtin
Party: DNVP
Age: 42
Appearance: Short (5'3"), black hair, stout, glasses, with a seemingly permanent scowl and a colonel's uniform.
Brief Biography: An aristocratic infantry officer who served proudly in the Weltkrieg on the Western Front and briefly in the Freikorps, Kirtin had defined himself by a burning resentment of the decadent west for their humiliation of Germany and an utter hatred of communism, having spent far too long fighting against Communist uprising after the end of the Weltkrieg to have anything but fury towards the left. Ironically this last point has made him an opponent of the National Socialist Party, with him considering them no more than socialists hopped up on nationalism and childish Anti-Semitism. While he may resent his coalition partners in the SPD they aren't delusional madmen and he is willing to work with them to save the Fatherland. Ultimately he seeks the restoration of the old order and the defeat of the Communist plague to the east in the name of God and Fatherland, the only cause a German officer should need.

Also he is begrudgingly voting [X] Stimulus solely in order to avoid more uprisings.

Well, I'm not a voting dude so it doesn't matter much for me. If it makes you feel better, I promise not to spoil it, I just wanna take a gander at your mod.

Sword & Shield: A Compedium History of Soviet Secret Police and Espionage Networks

Of the multitude of links that reached maturation under the NKVD, none has garnered more fame and attention then the spy ring famously known as the "ON Network", operating out of Germany. The fame of the network mainly stems from two sources: it's longevity and the breadth of information it provided it's Soviet masters. The nickname of the ON Network came from the codename of the OGPU/NKVD agent who had been placed at the head of the Ring, Agent ON (OH, in the native Russian Cyrillic Alphabet). For all the legend that has built up around Agent ON, the simple reality is that he was merely the chief organizer and go between of the ring's lower network of actual agents and couriers on the one hand and the analysts within Moscow on the other. For the longest time, the Abwehr believed that Agent ON was a member of the Soviet embassy staff due to the bulk of initial messages sent by him emanating from the Soviet embassy. The same assumption would lead them to believe he had ceased operations in the late-1930s, when intercepts abruptly dropped off, only to be proved dreadfully wrong when a chance intercept revealed he was from in fact operating throughout Germany, moving with each transmission of information...

Transcript of Abwehr Records from April 5th, 1933. First Known Partial-Intercept of Message by Agent ON, of the then OGPU*, to Moscow.

... specific document copies dispatch as per... provide summary as follows...

... Hitlerite uprisings largely subdued... judge prospects for KPD as... situation is in flux...

... debate among bourgeoisie as to deal with... recommendation of so-called "Stimulus Package" favored at current time...

... live our socialist motherland...

*The OGPU was incorporated into the NKVD as the reorganized GUGB in July 1934 following the elevation of the NKVDs mandate from the level of the RSFSR to the USSR as a whole.

Apologies for the delay. Been pretty busy lately. As soon as I have these chapters I'm working on done, back to this. That said, since I forgot at the time:

Because we need more ships!

Until I get dissent down, we will have no manpower. So Germany cannot have more waifus warships right now, sorry. Need to get the dissent down so I can fire the first level of mobilization and get some manpower and MP growth going before I can build anything. We're going to literally be at zero by the time all the military units are fully reinforced.

So no tall Germanic beauties battleships or battlecruisers yet.

Well, I was gonna make a Hitler = Trump joke, but then I remembered that Hitler actually had things like intelligence and long-term goals...

Long term goals yes, but both are sorely lacking in intelligence.

No, Hitler was very much a genius... an evil genius, and a lazy one at times, but a genius nonetheless. If you read any decent history of the German leadership in WWII, it's full of instances were Hitler cut right to the heart of the matter and asked the most important questions or raised the most important issues. That kind of penetrating intelligence is a good hallmark of genius. It pays to keep in mind that men we do think of as military geniuses like Manstein and Rommel were initially in awe of Hitler's military and political acumen... at least until the bloom came off the rose in the later years.
