Dead Space Remake (2023)

You know, Final Fantasy XIII did a thing where if you'd beaten the previous games, the sequels awarded you with an in-universe trophy of some kind.

Do you think the Remakes following this might do something similar?

I also had a fanfic idea. In Dead Space 2, Isaac suffers Bag of Spilling due to a PTSD/Marker exposure-caused mental breakdown landing him in an institution. What if he'd gotten all his stuff back from a holding locker or the like right outside the hospital we start the game in? Basically, start the game with at least one weapon fully upgraded and the Marine Suit(60% Armor) equipped. Does this change much if we take it at face-value?

Man, the fully upgraded plasma cutter is an absolute power trip in NG+. Just shreds the necros like a hot knife through butter.

Incidentally, Dead Space Remake is currently 25% off on Steam. Would you say that it's worth the price now?

Honestly, I'd say it's worth full price. It's a fantastic game. If you can get it on discount, go for it.

If you like Dead Space and/or Action-Horror, then yes, I'd say it's a pretty good deal.
Well, I did find Evil Within 2 and the original Dead Space to be enjoyable, so yeah, kind of. 🤷‍♂️

About how hard would you say that the game is? I'm seeing contradictory statements on Steam between people who found it a cakewalk and people struggling to even keep their guns fed.

A bit on the easy side for me personally. Though I'm personally fairly well versed in titles like the remakes of Resident Evil 1, 2, and 3, and the original Dead Space games.

I'd suggest at least taking a crack at the "hard" difficulty on your first playthough.

People who are struggling with ammo are probably keeping all 4 weapons slots filled, which is actually a slightly odd way to make the game harder for yourself thanks to the way that ammo drops work. You're generally better off just keeping 1-2 weapons equipped and shoving every power node you can find and buy into them. Your loadout should be something like 1 precision/damage-dealing weapon, plus 1 AoE/flesh-stripping weapon. Me, I went with the Plasma Cutter and Flamethrower.

Honestly, a nitpick I have with the remake is that it feels pretty easy coming from the "Zealot" difficulty of Dead Space 2, and the difficulty slider is a rather brute-force "enemies take and give more damage," while the original games also played around with ammo scarcity.

Yes, the original did the same thing. Bit of a shame about the difficulty slider, but eh. It is what it is.

Honestly, I often played the Original Deadspace with literally just the Plasma Cutter for most or all of it. I admittedly wasn't doing the higher difficulties, so that's probably part of it.

Well no, the cutter is just that good. It's probably one of the best weapons to exist with a combat system.

Plus at the end of the day, Dead Space just isn't that hard. Don't be stupid, engage with the limb cutting, and you'll be fine no matter the difficulty.

As someone who played and enjoyed the Callisto Protocol, but has not played any of the Dead Space games yet, what's the reason for the massive difference in critical reception between Callisto Protocol and the remake?

I haven't played the Callisto Protocol, but most of what I've heard regarding criticism is that CP doesn't have a good gameplay loop, with the melee combat being boring and the guns not great, plus some story issues. The Dead Space Remake has a fantastic gameplay loop, possibly the best it's ever been in the franchise, and far fewer story issues.

AIUI, the Callisto Protocol is designed in a manner that makes it very frustrating to play rather than enjoyably scary, with enemies launching unavoidable attacks as you enter the room, melee counters being both mandatory and difficult to pull off due to muddy character design and unclear tells, while guns are limited to two different pistols and two different shotguns and that's it. Which means that the core gameplay loop isn't very good, and the less said about the writing the better. 🤷‍♂️

The Dead Space remake is good.

But after completing DSR, I went and played Dead Space 2 (and completed a Hardcore run, yay!) and it's even better.

Like, a remake of Dead Space 2 wouldn't hurt. I'd buy it and play it. But fuck it, it's kind of perfect already.

I really do wish they'd just skip remaking 2 in favor of giving 3 a do over.

Same. Hell, the way the remake is structured means you can go to DS2 from it and understand what's happening. Everything lines up right. At worst a few of the expanded scenes wouldn't be fully referenced.

But EA will EA, and I'm sure the bean counters figure they'll do better making a remake of the sequel then a remake of the third game.

Nitpick regarding the Dead Space remake:

The suit-changing animation is a downgrade. In the OG trilogy, the animation always looked appropiately creepy and unfomfortable, Isaac being slammed in with some magnetic force. And you're left to wonder about all the grinding machinery working around his fragile body, and wonder what might happen if that goes wrong.

The animation in the remake looks almost gentle by comparison. The oomph is not quite there.

Remake really is kind of easy, disappointingly. Especially for a returning veteran like myself.

Getting the stasis upgrade that flays the Necromorphs alive makes it really easy. New Game Plus is kind of boring - mostly a collect-a-thon for the sake of upgrading all the weapons and getting the skull face space marine suit.

This game needs a Zealot difficulty equivalent.

But they did change the difficulty. There's fewer difficulty modes (easy, normal, hard) and only one challenge mode, Impossible. And all difficulty changes is how tough the Necromorphs are. Higher difficulties back in the day meant the dropped less ammo too. Not to mention Necromorphs are just slower now, and don't charge as often. The only ones that are harder to deal with in the remake are the Spiters.
