First of all, this is BattleTech fanfic which is an AU made using this CYOA (https://drive.google.com/file/d/1gsEmnxHUYj8m19aMebrt5GaVJDSEhbHc/view), which I believe was made by Drakensis. If you want to know what I chose on the CYOA, I have put the build I am using below in the spoiler box. When it comes to taking inspiration from gameplay mechanics, I'll be using the HBS game rather than the tabletop because I am more familiar with that and I prefer it to the tabletop.

What is the date? = 3014 - Hanse Davion died on Halstead Station. [-1 Points]
Where are you? = Abbeville - You're linked to the nobility of the Outback worlds. [+1 Point]
What's your claim to the succession? You're the illegitimate sibling of the dead First Prince, but designated as heir. [+1 Point]
What's your academy? = Kilbourne - You're familiar with civil service roles as well as military duties. [+1 Point]
What's your military speciality? = Mechwarrior - The only sensible option for a Davion, really.
Who did you serve with? = A non-Davion Guards Unit of the AFFS - What is wrong with you? [+2 Points]
If you have points left over, you may spend one point each on:
-A close friend who is unquestionably reliable and trustworthy (think Ardan Sortek).
-A personal friendship with someone in the inner circle of the Captain-General.
-A personal friendship with someone in the inner circle of Archon.
-A minister in the government of the Federated Suns is a close personal friend
-You have earned the Diamond Sunburst, the second-highest military award of the AFFs.
You may freely choose:
-Age = 31
-Gender & General Appearance = Female/Redhead with green eyes who is pretty, but no great beauty.
-Military Experience - Four Years of Academy & Eleven Years in the Fourth Deneb Light Cavalry plus two and a half months as Minister of Administrative Services.

Cottonport, Abbeville
Draconis March, Federated Suns
5 February 3014

Victoria Eveline London was fast asleep when she was awoken by the infantrymen from the Davion Guards. Security for her as the Princess Imperial and Minister of Administrative Services, all of which is new to her as those developments only came about mere months ago. Back when her older half-brother Ian died and her younger half-brother Hanse took his place as First Prince of the Federated Suns before appointing her as his chosen heir in the absence of his own children.

Victoria has mixed feelings about that. On the one hand, she gets along with her half-brothers and is finally being brought into the Davion family, but at the same time, her life got overturned and she knows that while Hanse believed she was qualified for the task, he also only designated her as his heir to put another barrier between Michael Hasek and the throne.

Far from the first time in her life and certainly not for the last time, Victoria mentally curses the late Andrew Davion for being a crappy, worthless father.

But Victoria doesn't have time to bemoan her family as she spots the grim look on the face of the man waking her.

"What's the situation, Sergeant?" demands Victoria as she quickly takes in the rank signature of the man.

"Colonel Laurent just received a priority HPG from Captain Sortek on Halstead Station," says the sergeant, "The First Prince is dead."

Damn it, Hanse is dead. The loss of her brother is a tragedy of its own, but it is made even worse by the fact that Victoria is next in line for the throne.

Damn it all.

***

"You sure about taking the throne?" asks Victoria's best friend, Tahmina Singh, a fellow MechWarrior who has been at her side since they were roommates at Kilbourne Academy, "You're never been shy about your feelings on the matter when it comes to the Davions."

"I've been plenty shy about it," retorts Victoria as the soldiers with her shift uncomfortably, "We live in the Suns and it is House Davion that we're talking about."

"Not to me, you haven't," presses Tahmina as the short petite woman of Indian descent stares at her, "So Vic, what gives?"

"I have a duty to the Federated Suns, something I chose when I made the decision to sign up with the AFFS," answers Victoria, "Whatever I think of my father and the rest of his family, that takes second place to doing my duty. Besides, my brothers treated me right once they knew I existed."

God, isn't that a punch to the gut. In less than four months, Victoria has lost both of her half-brothers and the Federated Suns has lost two First Princes. She really hopes that taking out the Kuritan supply depot and stealing a bunch of old books on Halstead Station was worth Hanse's life.

Thankfully, Tahmina leaves it at that, perhaps sensing the change in her mood, and lets Victoria ride in silence as their jeep heads towards the DropShip. She will need to get back to New Avalon as soon as possible to claim her throne. Victoria might be the Princess Imperial and the only surviving sibling of the previous First Prince who has a claim to the throne, but she hasn't got a civil service record and Victoria is an illegitimate half-sibling. That last bit isn't as much of a mark against her as it would be in other nations, not when there aren't any surviving legitimate siblings to stand before her in the succession, but it could be used against her.

And Victoria has no doubt that Michael will attempt to contest her succession. He is a corruptive, ambitious man who fought with Hanse during her half-brother's brief stint as First Prince. Hanse spent the months between Ian's death and leaving for Halstead Station clearing out Michael's influence in the government, replacing those loyal to the Haseks with those loyal to the Davions.

Oh, she does have a Diamond Sunburst that she earnt in battle against the Dracs. That counts for a damn lot in the Federated Suns and it should be enough to seal the deal combined with her sibling status and position as the Princess Imperial. So long as Victoria doesn't get killed before then, which is a real possibility because Victoria is one of those who believes that Michael was behind that assassin who made an attempt on Hanse's life.

The weasel might have avoided leaving any undeniable proof tying him to the deed, but that only counts for the courts and the public. Those of them in Hanse's confidence knew the truth and to Victoria's gratitude, she is counted within that number. Or rather she was as Hanse is dead now.

Pushing the spike of grief aside, Victoria thinks about how to neutralise Michael as a threat to her reign. Hanse had put him in his place, but Michael had to still be smarting from that and with her half-brother's death, Michael will have another shot at the throne via going through Victoria. God knows that her brother-in-law won't pass up his second chance.

The Davion Guards would stay neutral-no, bad Victoria, don't think about military force. Think ministers because they are responsible for running the Federated Suns and hold more power than any individual planetary leader. Even the Haseks and Sandovals draw more of their power from being ministers than they do from being dukes. Speaking of which, Victoria can count on Duke Sandoval to support her. Aaron Sandoval might be as ambitious as Michael Hasek, but unlike the latter, Aaron cares about protecting his people and fulfilling his responsibilities as the leader of the Draconis March rather than advancing his own power.

With the other ministers, Victoria knows she can count on most of Hanse's appointees. Olivia Fenlon in the Ministry of Foreign Relations, Joan Davion in the Ministry of Ways and Means, Mark Butcher in MIIO and especially Mark, who has been a close friend of Victoria even before Hanse appointed him. Not to mention that the Ministry of Administrative Services will be freed up for Victoria to put someone of her own choosing there. She isn't sure how much help the Ministry of Administrative Services will be, but having another minister in her corner will be undeniably to her benefit.

Hopefully the journey back to New Avalon won't take too long.

Avalon City, New Avalon
Crucis March, Federated Suns
20 February 3014

"How bad is it?" Victoria asks as she climbs into the highly secure hover limo that has come to pick her up from the spaceport.

She isn't the only one in the limo. While a pair of drivers from the Davion Guards are up front, Victoria has Olivia Fenlon, Mark Butcher and Yvonne Davion in the back with her. Quite the welcoming committee, but not unexpected given the circumstances.

"Michael Hasek-Davion hasn't shown up yet," answers Mark with a wry grin, "One of the JumpShips in his command circuit blew a helium seal and the last I heard is that the duke is waiting for his replacement JumpShip to finish charging its drive. The best part is that it is completely natural. No involvement from myself or any of my agents no matter what might get said in the future."

"That's-" Victoria starts to reply before pausing as she does the maths in her head, "That doesn't add up. He still should have gotten here before me. Abbeville is further away from New Avalon than New Syrtis and while my command circuit didn't suffer a breakdown like that, it wasn't a full command circuit either."

"I sat on the message," says Yvonne with a trace of smugness and more than a trace of satisfaction, "Ardan sent a priority message directly to me and one to you. I waited most of a week before going public with it and passing the news onto Sandoval and Hasek. All in the name of security and avoiding a panic since we didn't want to release the news of the First Prince's death until we were certain it was true."

"Giving you a chance to get here before Michael does was just a happy side-bonus," adds Mark with false sincerity that Victoria would have mistaken for real if she didn't know him so well.

"Speaking of the Haseks and Sandoval, Victoria, Duke Sandoval was not delayed and arrived a few days ago," says Olivia.

"I'm aware," replies Victoria, "I received a message from him to let me know that he was planetside and that I could count upon his support."

"Aaron is a reliable sort," says Yvonne, "Unlike with Hasek, we can count upon him to remain loyal."

"And he knows full well that Michael is a rat," adds Mark, "Speaking of rats, I have begun to purge my ministry of those who I doubt the loyalty of. It might be a little blatant, but Michael was able to stuff a lot of people into MIIO to the point that I am only able to trust parts of it with sensitive stuff. The way I'm handling things, you don't need to worry about legal pushback, but I would be surprised if Michael doesn't try to make something of it."

"Since we are on the subject of what Michael will be up to, what are the odds of me being able to declare myself First Prince before he shows up?"

"You have the support of a majority of ministers between yourself, Olivia and myself," answers Mark, "Aaron and Joan will also both support you, which gives you five of the eight ministries. Michael costs you the Ministry of the Capellan March, but we should be able to get the last two ministers to support us. Aaron also gives you the Draconis March to counter Michael having the Capellan March on his side and since you are the Princess Imperial and showed up before Michael could start sinking his hooks into things, the Crucis March should fall in line behind you."

"You can also discount any military action taking place unless somebody seriously screws things up," says Yvonne, "Michael might fancy himself the master of multiple regiments, but the truth is that few of them would be willing to follow him in open revolt unless they are given an extremely good reason. The Davion Guards would feel honourbound to sit out of any war of succession between you and Hasek, but you can count on the regiments loyal to Sandoval and the rest of the AFFS would either follow you or declare neutrality."

"But don't be surprised if Michael does try to intimidate you with the threat of military action," warns Mark, "He would be bluffing, but he doesn't necessarily know that you would know he is bluffing."

"I doubt that Michael would go as far as to threaten civil war," protests Olivia, sounding a little uncomfortable at this turn in the conversation.

"Not openly, but if he was in private, where he could deny ever making the statement, I wouldn't put it past him," says Mark, "Either way, Michael won't have a shot at taking the throne unless he gets rid of you."

"Which he would definitely try," mutters Yvonne darkly, "We all know he was behind that sniper even if we could never prove it enough to openly accuse him of it."

"Don't worry, Vic, I will take care of keeping you safe," Mark assures the Princess Imperial, "I'll assign some of my men and women, ones that I know and trust, to your protection. Michael won't find you to be an easy target."

"And you can count on the Davion Guards too," adds Yvonne, "They'll take their duty to protect you very seriously and I'll be using my position as the Prince's Champion to make sure that the reliable sort are in charge of keeping you safe."

It is quite reassuring to Victoria to know that she could count on her brother's government to support her. He might not have finished clearing out Michael's influence, but the Princess Imperial knows that she can count on the other Hanse appointees to have her back.

"So moving on from the scheming weasel and his plots, I have two things on my initial agenda," says Victoria, "First is improving the standard of living outside of the Golden Five, especially in the Outback."

"You can count on Joan for that," replies Olivia, "Part of the reason she accepted Hanse's plea to become the Minister of Ways and Means is to help the impoverished worlds in the Suns, such as those in the Outback or the worlds that have been particularly ravaged by the succession wars. If you want to push some development programs for the poor worlds, you can count on her wholehearted support for that."

"I had hoped that would be the case," says Victoria, "The second item on my agenda is going to be your area of expertise, Olivia."

"Oh?" says the Minister of Foreign Relations inquiringly.

"What is the plausibility of an alliance with the Lyran Commonwealth and the Free Worlds League?" asks Victoria as she looks Olivia in the eye, "I have an in with both the Archon and the Captain General and I want to know if I can turn those into something more, something beneficial to the Suns and reduce the devastation of the Succession Wars."

"An alliance with one or the other is certainly on the table," answers Olivia after a pause, "We have had traditionally good relations by Succession War-era standards with the Free World and they are our largest trade partner. And Ian had been making successful overtures to the Lyrans for closer relations in private before he died. All of that said, I don't think that it is viable to form an alliance with both. Too much hatred and enmity lies between them to come to terms with each other like they would be willing to do so for us."

"Actually, I might be able to provide an opportunity to help with that," says Mark, cutting into the conversation as Victoria opens her mouth to reply, "With the help of House Liao, Anton Marik is going to launch a revolt against his brother in a month or two to seize the Captain-Generalship for himself. I have agents riddled amongst his supporters which Ian and then later Hanse intended to use to support Anton's rebellion in order to destabilise the League."

"Wait, why in God's name would my brothers want to destabilise the League?" demands Victoria as she looks between Mark and Olivia in confusion, "Didn't you just say that we had good relationships with them?"

"They are our biggest trade partner, but they are also a rival Successor State," answers Mark, "Destabilising them could have made them a more inviting target to House Liao, reducing the amount of forces the Confederation would devote to our border. Weakening them could have let us demand more trade concessions from them. If Anton ends up winning, he would be indebted to us for our aid."

"Is that likely?" asks Yvonne, "Anton winning his rebellion?"

"Not at all," answers Olivia while Mark shakes his head, "Anton might have a chance at winning, but I consider it unlikely. He has support from the Liaos under the table, but he cannot openly accept their aid without losing the support he needs within the League itself. I doubt he will be able to get that support, but at the same time, Janos is unlikely to be able to just crush his brother. Most of the provinces will either remain neutral or be more worried about a Lyran or Capellan attack than which Marik sits on the throne. By the same token, Anton will probably be able to keep his seat if he becomes Captain-General by force. Not a respected or listened to Captain-General, but he would be one."

"So how does it tie into getting the Lyrans and Leaguers to agree to an alliance?" asks Victoria.

"We can help ensure that Janos wins, earning his gratitude and proving our good intentions," answers Mark, "It could be used to garner support for your initiative to lessen tensions between the League, the Commonwealth and the Federation."

"Mark is right," says Olivia, "And I could take it a step further if the Archon proves cooperative."

"Explain further, Olivia," orders Victoria.

"If Katrina Steiner proves open to your idea of extending the budding alliance between the Suns and the Commonwealth to the League, then we could persuade her not to attack and take advantage of Anton's revolt to strike the League," replies Olivia, "While I cannot say she would support your endeavour for certain, I do believe there is a solid chance of it. If we could get Katrina not to attack the League, we could leverage our support for Janos against Anton into a ceasefire and peace talks."

"But it is dependent on Katrina and Janos playing ball," concludes Victoria.

"As interesting as this is, I do believe that we are approaching our destination," says Mark, interrupting Olivia as she opens her mouth to speak, "It won't be long before we reach the Davion Palace so anything that needs to be addressed before then should be brought up now."

"Thank you, Mark," says Victoria, "To make sure that I am on the same page, I am going to declare myself First Prince and act like it before Michael shows up. I will have the High Council confirm it, but they are just going to be rubber stamping it. It might be unfair to the council, but I want to get work right away and leave Michael no openings to contest my ascension."

"We should go to the Privy Council first," says Yvonne, "As we discussed, the ministries will fall in line behind you and the marshals. Most of them anyway, we'll know who to replace if they make a fuss."

"Isn't that a bit extreme?" asks Victoria, "We are playing loose and fast with the rules here."

"You're the Princess Imperial with support from the majority of the Ministries and House Sandoval," replies Mark, "Maybe they might be objecting on principle, but most likely than not they are Hasek's people. Hanse started to clean house, but we are still a long way from done. Also, you'll need to start calling yourself a Davion not a London."

"I beg your pardon?" says Victoria.

"Mark is right, Victoria," says Olivia in a gentle tone, "I know that you have completely reasonable and understandable issues with your paternal heritage, but you cannot continue using your mother's name. If you are to lead the Federated Suns, you need to be First Prince Davion, not Colonel London."

"Andrew treated you wrong, no one here is going to argue that, but going down this path, you need to embrace being a Davion," adds Yvonne, "Being the First Prince means being a Davion and it may be hard on you, but the Suns need you to be Victoria Davion not Victoria London."

"Fine, fine," says Victoria as she raises her hands in surrender, "I'll take up the Davion name."

But she doesn't have to like it, she decides in the privacy of her own mind.

***

Here is the first chapter of the story, hopefully off to a good start. In this AU, Victoria London is the third child of Andrew Davion and his second illegitimate daughter. Unlike with Marie, her mother was from the Outback so Andrew was able to cover up the embarrassment by making Victoria keep her mother's name and sending her off to live with her mother's family in the Outback. I also have no problem throwing Andrew Davion under the bus in this story due to how he canonically treated his illegitimate daughter.

She got on with her life, but had a thing against House Davion for understandable reasons. She went to Kilbourne Academy and thanks to her ancestry on her mother's side, Victoria was able to join the 4th Deneb Light Cavalry, where she served for little over a decade. Halfway into that time, she won the Diamond Sunburst in battle against the Combine, which led to her half-brothers finding out about her and accepting her into her family.

While Victoria still has less than kind feelings towards House Davion due to her father forcing her to grow up on the literal Periphery border, where she didn't always have electricity or running water, she has or had built up a good relationship with her half-brothers.She has also developed a bunch of contacts within and outside of the Federated Suns.

Anyway, after Ian died, Hanse appointed Victoria as his heir apparent because he felt she was up to the job and to put another barrier between Michael and the throne. He then went to Halstead Station and died as they were being extracted as Ardan failed to save him in this AU. So now as per the premise of the CYOA that this AU is based on, Victoria is the heir to the Federated Suns.

Finally, I intend to update daily until the entirety of the story is uploaded.

Please point out any spelling or grammar mistakes that you spot. Please quote them in the thread and explain what you think is wrong so I know what you are referring to.

Chapter Two
Davion Palace, Avalon City, New Avalon
Crucis March, Federated Suns
20 February 3014

"Princess Imperial Davion, thank you for agreeing to meet with me," says Aaron Sandoval as the Duke of Robinson holds out a hand to Victoria.

"Call me Victoria, Duke Sandoval," replies Victoria as she clasps his outreached hand and shakes, "And it was the least that I could do when you are showing me the support that you are."

The room that they are meeting in isn't the most grandiose room in the Davion Palace, but it is still far more than what Victoria is used to. Its furnishings, furniture and works of art are all high quality as befitting House Davion's centre of power, but at the same time, the room is modest in what it has in it compared to some of the more opulent rooms in the palace.

And yet it is so far above what Victoria grew up with that it feels excessively lavish to her sensibilities. At least the chairs are extremely comfortable.

"I am only doing my duty, Victoria, and you can call me Aaron if we are going to be using first names," says Aaron with a grim smile, "You are the rightful heir to the Federated Suns and I would be amiss in my responsibilities if I didn't show you the support that you deserve. And you certainly deserve it after all you've done for the Draconis March and the Federated Suns as a whole."

"Nonetheless, I am grateful for it, Aaron," says Victoria as she gives him a grin in turn, "It is more than what I can expect from certain other quarters."

"Michael is a rat, isn't he?" mutters Aaron, "It has been obvious since he didn't just take his wife's surname to his own, but forced his rivals to do the same despite not even being married to the woman."

"I won't comment on my half-sister's choice in men, but I don't intend to give Hasek the chance to disrupt my ascension, not when he has been so fortunately delayed," replies Victoria.

"It was rather fortuitous for you and perhaps the Federation that Michael's command circuit was broken like that," agrees Aaron, "Tell me, is Minister Butcher really free of blame for that?"

"I have no doubt that Mark had something planned, but this wasn't it," answers Victoria, "It seems that it truly was an act of God."

"I for one have no doubts that the Lord would favour you over Michael," says Aaron, "Now, I have not been privy to the plans of certain individuals, but I would have to be a fool to not see that schemes are afoot."

"Mine is to declare myself First Prince and start running the Federated Suns before Michael can show up to contest my claim," replies Victoria, "I'll get the High Council to rubber stamp it later, but I want to hit the ground running when it comes to my ascension to the throne. I was hoping for your support in that. Those that I spoke with on my way to the palace were optimistic about my chances of receiving that."

"They aren't wrong that I'll support you over Michael or his son, but I would like to know what you plan to do as First Prince before I go an extra step," says Aaron as the older man peers down at Victoria, "I trust you, Victoria, but I would like to know your plans as First Prince and some details about them."

"Right now, I have two things I want to achieve beyond the usual business of protecting the Suns from Dracs, Cappies and pirates," answers Victoria, "The first is that I want to do something about the Outback. I am fully aware that I am quite biassed when it comes to Periphery and our less developed worlds, but the state of the Outback is a disgrace and embarrassment to the Suns. There has to be something that can be done about it and I intend to try. I've been informed that Joan Davion is already planning to improve the economic status of the Outback and would support my plans."

"Joan certainly has her opinions on the matter," agrees Aaron, "That is one thing. What is the second?"

"I want to get an alliance with the Lyran Commonwealth and Free Worlds League," answers Victoria before pausing both for dramatic effect and to let Aaron process her statement.

"Good Lord, you do not dream small do you," exclaims Aaron, "Do you have a shot?"

"Olivia says that it depends on Katrina and Janos being open, but the circumstances right now give me a shot at success instead of being borderline impossible," replies Victoria, "Part of the reason that I want to start acting as First Prince as soon as possible is to take advantage of the situation before it slips away."

"What's the situation?" inquires Aaron.

"Anton Marik is going to rebel against his brother with under the table support from the Capellans," answers Victoria, "We have spies in Anton's ranks which we can use to help Janos defeat his brother and earn some gratitude from him. My plan is to try and convince Archon Katrina to not take advantage of Anton's rebellion to attack the League and then use that combined with Janos' gratitude to arrange a ceasefire and peace talks. It isn't guaranteed to work, but if it does, we can ally with the Commonwealth against the Kuritans and with the League against the Liaos."

"You might be biting off more than you can chew, but if it works…" says Aaron, his voice trailing off, "You don't dream small that is for certain, but dreaming big and taking a risk is sometimes what you need to do. Alright, you have my support, but I have one last question."

"Shoot," replies Victoria.

"What if your ambitions don't pan out?" asks Aaron, "If you have to choose between the Lyrans or the Leaguers, which do you go with?"

"In the absence of specific context, I would prioritise the Commonwealth," answers Victoria after a moment's thought, "House Kurita is a bigger threat to us than House Liao so the Suns benefit more from an alliance with House Steiner than we do from an alliance with House Marik. And then there is the fact that Ian has already made headway towards an alliance with the Lyrans. We might have traditionally been on better terms with the League, but right now, we have a closer relationship with the Commonwealth."

"I was already satisfied with your answers, but I am pleased to see that this is a thought out endeavour and not a dream without thinking of failure," says Aaron, "Victoria, you can count on my support."

"Thank you, Aaron," replies Victoria.

***

The Privy Council meets in a larger room than the one that Victoria met Aaron Sandoval in and not only is it larger, but it is significantly more grandiose to the point that Victoria has a momentary worry that she has entered the wrong room. Six of the other seven ministers are also here along with a dozen or so officers, the Field Marshals and regular Marshals currently on New Avalon.

Victoria wishes that she could have Tahmina here for her friend's support and wisdom, but bringing a Leftenant Colonel to a Privy Council meeting will need to wait until she is actually the First Prince. As things are, Victoria will just have to make do with her supporters here.

"Welcome to this meeting," says Victoria, trying to ignore the discomfort that comes with wearing her new skirt suit that Mark insisted she wore to this meeting instead of her service dress, "While I am sure everyone here is aware of the fact at this point, First Prince Hanse Davion died in battle at Halstead Station, slain by the DCMS during the extraction of AFFS forces."

Apparently she needed to emphasise her non-military credentials for this meeting. Colonel of a 'Mech regiment and a Diamond Sunburst to her name were more than enough to show her ability to fight for the Federated Suns, but Victoria needs to convince the Privy Council that she is up to running the Federated Suns. Being the Minister of Administrative Services was supposed to help with that, but with Hanse dying so soon into his reign, Victoria needs to play up her courses at Kilbourne and her foreign connections.

Knowing all that and accepting it as true doesn't stop her from wishing she was wearing more familiar attire though.

"I called this meeting because there are opportunities that we cannot afford to let slip through our grasp due to a lack of a First Prince," continues Victoria after a moment when nobody else speaks up, "As the Princess Imperial and next First Prince, I will be taking up the responsibilities of being First Prince until a quorum of the High Council can be assembled and my ascension confirmed."

At her words, the mild tension in the room increases by a few notches. No doubt most of it is due to the supporters of Hasek realising that she intends to take the throne before their patron can show up to contest her, but part of it is from the fact that Victoria is attempting to undercut Michael and everyone here knows it.

"Colonel London," starts one of the Field Marshals, making sure to emphasise his usage of her last name, "I don't believe you have the authority to do that."

"Princess Imperial Davion does have that authority provided we, the Privy Council, choose to support her," cuts in Yvonne as she gives her fellow Field Marshal a glare that he refuses to back down from.

"The High Council is responsible for deciding who becomes First Prince when there is a contested succession," says a Marshal.

"What contested succession?" scoffs Aaron as the Duke of Robinson comes to Victoria's aid, "Victoria Davion is the only remaining sibling of the First Prince who has a claim and is the Princess Imperial. She has done more than her five years of service, during which she earnt a Diamond Sunburst, the highest award available to her given that Davions aren't eligible for the Excalibur."

"Both Duke Hasek-Davion and his son have a claim to the throne," says the Field Marshal from before.

"The succession is clear, Lukas," says another Field Marshal, addressing the first, "The Princess Imperial is next in line. And it isn't like this is the first time that a First Prince has gotten to work before their coronation. The rest of the Sphere isn't going to pause so we can have a ceremony."

"Speaking of which, we have time-sensitive situations to take care of," cuts in Mark as he leans forward, "Hanse would already be dealing with it, but he's dead so now it falls to his chosen heir to pick up the job."

"Duke Hasek-Davion isn't even here yet and we are already talking about cutting him and his own of their rightful claims," protests the Marshal from earlier.

"Michael should have got here on time," retorts Aaron, "I got here just fine and Victoria had to get here all the way from the Periphery with an incomplete command circuit."

"That's because she isn't even a Davion!" shouts someone, but multiple people yell over them and Victoria watches as the Privy Council devolves into arguments.

Thankfully, it doesn't last long as Yvonne starts into the fray.

"Enough!" roars the Prince's Champion in a booming voice that outdoes the current racket, "This is the Privy Council of the Federated Suns and not the schoolyard! Act like it! Victoria Davion was legitimised by First Prince Ian Davion and First Prince Hanse Davion appointed her as his heir apparent. She is next in line for the throne and if you don't like that, you can either accept it and do your job or you can resign in protest. The coronation will take place later and the High Council can confirm it once it is gathered. Until then, the Princess Imperial will do her job because no matter what Duke Hasek-Davion has to say, this is not a contested succession because he doesn't have a leg to stand on."

"You're only saying that because you still hate the Haseks for putting you in your place," says the hostile Field Marshal from before and Victoria makes the decision that he will not be retaining his position under her reign, no matter how competent he might be at his job, "Duke Hasek-Davion and his son-"

"Will not have the support of the Draconis March," declares Aaron as he cuts off the insubordinate officer, "Victoria Davion is the rightful heir to Hanse Davion."

"I also support the Princess Imperial," says Olivia.

"As do I," adds Joan Davion.

"And I," says Mark, making him the fourth minister to support Victoria, which gives her a majority when it comes to the ministries.

"I also recognise Victoria Davion as the legitimate heir to the late First Prince," says Field Marshal Joseph Davion, who Victoria places as being the new Commander of the Royal Brigade of Guards now that Christopher Payne is no longer running the Davion Guards.

Which is why he is only recognising her claim and not supporting her. The Davion Guards wouldn't tarnish their honour by getting involved in supporting one side of a contested succession. No, thinks Victoria bitterly, the vaunted Davion Guards would just sit by and watch as that weasel Michael Hasek undermines her rule and attempts to usurp her throne.

"You should leave, Lukas," says one of the other officers.

"I am part of the Privy Council and you cannot make me leave, Meredith," retorts the insubordinate Field Marshal.

"No, she cannot, but I can," says Victoria as she glares at the man and he glares right back, "I am relieving you of your duties. I'm sure that as the Prince's Champion, you can handle cashiering him from the AFFS on my behalf, Yvonne?"

"Of course I will, First Prince Davion," replies Yvonne with a small grin.

"You cannot do this!" shouts the rebellious Field Marshal and Victoria needs to find out what his name is.

Or maybe she doesn't. The man, wasn't he called Lukas by one of the others earlier, looks around for support, support that is not coming. Some of the faces he sees are angry at his behaviour or satisfied with this turn of events, others are neutral as they reveal no thoughts and a few are even sympathetic, but nobody comes to his defence. A couple of guards step in to remove the man by force if necessary, but their presence proves to be unneeded in the end as the soon to be former Field Marshal stalks out of the room.

"Does anybody else here wish to oppose my leadership?" asks Victoria as she looks around the room, locking eyes with everyone one by one.

The meeting doesn't end after that and she receives more than a few questions that she answers, but nobody is contending her position. They either support her, have fallen in line or biding their time until Michael Hasek finally shows up as Victoria has no doubt that the weasel has more than just a Field Marshal after dominating Ian's government for so long.
***

The second chapter and I'm not entirely happy with it. Filling out the government is harder than I expected because while I know the positions, a lot of them from the old house book are filled with people who only got the job in the 3020s or the late 3010s so I'm basically making OCs for a lot of the positions.

Anyway, Victoria gets the support of Aaron Sandoval and she makes her first step to dealing with Michael Hasek-Davion's men. Hanse started clearing house when it came to Michael's people, but with only a handful of months, he was far from finished when he died in this AU. So it falls to Victoria to finish the job.

Anyway, the next update will be Michael showing up, the Halstead expedition will be completing their return to New Avalon and Victoria might begin her diplomatic outreach. That last one depends on how much of the chapter the first two take up.

Please point out any spelling or grammar mistakes that you spot. Please quote them in the thread and explain what you think is wrong so I know what you are referring to.

Chapter Three
Davion Palace, Avalon City, New Avalon
Crucis March, Federated Suns
21 February 3014

"Hey Vic," calls Tahmina as she walks into Victoria's personal quarters, "Enjoying your new quarters?"

"I am," admits Victoria from where she is working on her computer because she cannot deny that her new quarters are as comfortable as they are luxurious.

Her quarters are massive with the bedroom alone being larger than the apartment she grew up in. She also has an oversized bathroom, an oversized closet and an oversized of everything that royalty could expect. Because she is royalty and that little fact is only just hitting Victoria.

"I'm royalty, Tahmina," says Victoria with a little giggle, "Royalty!"

"Vic, are you okay?" asks Tahmina as she gives her an odd look.

"You're looking at the First Prince of the Federated Suns," declares Victoria as she gets up and steps away from her computer, "Look at me now! Gone from not always having working power or water coming out of the tap to being one of the Successor Lords! God, my old man would be pissed."

"I see you are still upset at him," notes Tahmina.

"I miss Ian and I'm going to miss Hanse because my brothers were good to me, but our father?" says Victoria, "He can rot in hell for how he treated me. I'm the First Prince and I just wish that he was here to see how far I have risen despite his best efforts."

"Really?" inquires Tahmina and Victoria sobers up.

"No, I wish that Hanse, Ian and my mother were also still around for very different reasons," answers Victoria more seriously, "And ruling the Federated Suns is going to be a very different can of worms compared to leading a 'Mech regiment. There's a reason that the heir apparent traditionally leads a ministry for a few years and I am becoming very acquainted with that reason. Thankfully, I have a lot of supporters due to Hanse. The best gift that he could have left behind for me."

"Glad to see that you are adjusting well," says Tahmina as she takes a seat next to Victoria, "Now what about me? I appreciate the rooms you have given me and you're my ultimate boss now, but what's my job going to be going forward?"

"You've been my wingwoman since academy and you make an excellent XO to me," replies Victoria, "I want you as my personal assistant. No specific responsibilities or positions, just working at my side, helping me get things done like you always do. If you want to, that is."

"As you said, you're the First Prince now so it isn't really up to me, is it?" replies Tahmina, but Victoria can hear the teasing in her voice, "But seriously, Vic, I have your back girl."

"Thanks, Tahmina," says Victoria as she gives her best friend a grateful grin, "I knew I could count on your support."

"You've earnt it," says Tahmina with shrug, "So what are you working on now?"

"Familiarising myself with everything I need to know," answers Victoria, "Also crafting an HPG message for Loretta to explain my foreign ambitions and get her onboard."

"You're actually going for your anti-Drac and Cappie alliance then?" inquires Tahmina with a raised eyebrow.

"Mark and Olivia both feel that the current circumstances make it an unlikely possibility rather than a pie in the sky effort," replies Victoria, "One of the reasons I ended up pushing so strongly to start ruling as First Prince is so I could take advantage of those circumstances. Mark and Olivia are handling things with their respective ministries while I am reaching out to Loretta and I have arranged for Morgan to get a command circuit here so I can speak with him personally about the Archon and if it is possible to get her aboard."

"You can do that?" asks Tahamina, "Summon Morgan here, that is?"

"He might be a mercenary and a Lyran citizen, but we are friends so he'll come because I am asking him to nicely," answers Victoria, "There is an argument to be made that he is ditching his post, but since I am his employer, that argument only matters if I'm the one making it."

"Sounds about right," replies Tahmina, "It'll be nice to see Morgan in person again, writing just doesn't cut it."

"Yeah, it doesn't," agrees Victoria, "Have you tried the room service yet?"

"I've been afraid to," admits Tahmina with a slightly embarrassed blush, "It's the Davion Palace and I just feel out of place here."

"I know that feeling," says Victoria before letting out a sigh, "I am First Prince Victoria Davion now, but I still feel like I am just Colonel Victoria London."

"Davion?" repeats Tahmina with a frown, "You're taking up the name now?"

"I kind of have to if I want to be First Prince," explains Victoria, "Going to take a while to adjust, but if duty calls, I'm going to answer and this time duty requires me to start calling myself a Davion and embracing my heritage."

"For what it's worth, I think you are more than worthy of calling yourself a Davion," says Tahmina.

"Thanks, Tahmina," says Victoria, "Want to order some food and drink? The kitchen staff here are some of the best in the galaxy and you don't have to pay anything for it.."

"I might as well," says Tahmina, "Where's the menu?"

"That's the second-best part, there isn't one," replies Victoria with a grin, "The steward explained it to me when he was showing me my quarters. The reason there is no menu is because I get to order something and the chefs do their best to cook it. Obviously this has limits, but we basically just pick what we want. Well, I do. I didn't ask the steward about guests like yourself, but since you're here with me, I'll just order whatever you want alongside what I want."

"The perks of being royalty," says Tahmina, "Give me a moment to think about what I want, Vic."

As her best friend comes up with her desired meal, Victoria can't help but wonder if she could have grown up with this level of luxury had her father been a better person. If she could have grown up with siblings and a family instead of getting by mostly on her own on an underdeveloped Periphery world.

Davion Palace, Avalon City, New Avalon
Crucis March, Federated Suns
25 February 3014

Three days after Victoria stepped foot on New Avalon, the first group from the Halstead Station expedition jumps into the system. Not all of the units involved have arrived, but elements from the Davion Heavy Guards and the 34th Avalon Hussars have jumped into the system.

The majority of their RCTs are staying with their JumpShips, including the entire 10th Deneb Cavalry, but some elements have gone ahead on a pseudo-command circuit on the orders of Major General Ran Felsner. Amongst their number is Ardan Sortek and Dana Stephenson, the best friend and fiance of Hanse respectively.

Victoria hopes that they'll support her like they did with Hanse. All three of them are capable individuals in their own right and Ran Felsner is a rising star in the AFFS who comes with the Davion Heavy Guards at his back. And then there is the prize that they have brought with them, the majority of a Star League library, something that her brother died for. Victoria really hopes that those books will be worthy of Hanse's sacrifice.

The following day as the Davion Heavy Guards and 34th Avalon Hussars burn for the planet, Morgan Kell shows up as the command circuit that Victoria arranged for him arrives at the capital. It will take some time for the Lyran mercenary to land, but he and Victoria have already begun to catch up now that they are in the same star system.

And then on the twenty-fifth, Michael Hasek-Davion finally arrives, a full five days after Victoria has taken up the position of First Prince with the majority of the Privy Council backing her.

***

"Michael is here so what are he going to do?" asks Victoria to the small council she has gathered.

She has Olivia, Mark and Yvonne, but Victoria also has Aaron and Joan Davion joining their little band of conspirators. The Princess Imperial has also invited Tahmina to the meeting though she doubts her oldest friend will contribute much and her presence is more to help her get more experienced with this sort of thing more than anything else.

"Make a play for the throne, of course," says Yvonne, causing Mark to roll his eyes at her.

"Of course he is," says Mark, "Victoria was looking for the specifics so we can come up with a way to counter them."

"He'll go for the High Council," says Aaron as he looks around at the others in the room, "He has to as it is the only viable avenue left to him. It is a long shot option for him, but we have closed off the Privy Council and Michael doesn't have the support for a coup, something he is fully aware of."

"Going to the High Council won't work for him either," says Olivia, "He might have the support of the Capellan March, but the Draconis March will support House Sandoval and most of the Crucis March will default to you. Not to mention that by all accounts, the members from the Outback are looking to support you rather than remaining neutral and score some tit for tat support for their worlds."

"What about assassination?" says Tahmina with confidence that Victoria can tell is to cover up her nervousness, "He tried that last time around and if he has no other options…"

"Surely, Michael wouldn't go that far," protests Olivia, but nobody else in the room seems to agree with her.

"It is an open secret to those who care about such things that Hasek-Davion was behind the sniper on Emerson even if no proof was ever found," says Mark, "The question would be if he is willing to risk it because if he does get caught, the blowback from that would be disastrous for him."

"He will risk it," says Yvonne, "The man is ambitious and being given another chance to claim the throne mere months after his first? God knows that Michael won't turn his nose up at a second chance to fulfil his ambitions."

"As much as I would rather not speak ill of my fellow March lord, duty and honesty compel me to acknowledge that Michael will not pass up this opportunity," notes Aaron, "And the same also compels me to note that Michael is likely to resort to unsavoury tactics to seize this opportunity."

"And so we are back to the High Council and assassination," says Victoria, "Alright, Mark will worry about that second one and the rest of us will worry about the High Council."

"I'll be open in my support for you," replies Aaron, "I am the best counter to Michael in the political arena as the Draconis March supporting House Sandoval matches the Capellan March supporting House Hasek."

"Aaron is right," says Olivia, "To win the High Council's support, Michael needs to turn this into a Davion on Davion affair using his wife or son. Using Duke Sandoval to turn this into Hasek versus Davion who has the support of Sandoval is the best way to sink a legitimate bid for the Throne."

"The representatives from the Outback and the Periphery will also give their support to Victoria," says Joan Davion as she speaks up for the first time, "I've spoken to more than a few of them since we received news of Hanse's death and they view Victoria as one of their own. They see her becoming First Prince as their best chance to get support for their worlds and people and they see Michael claiming the throne as that support getting redirected to the Capellan March."

"That leaves Michael failing with the High Council," adds Yvonne, "Back to assassation, how much of a serious threat is that?"

"More than I would like," admits Mark unhappily, "Michael was in a position of extreme influence during Ian's reign and Hanse only began the first steps of purging his influence and people from the Federation's government. Doing a clean sweep of the ministers and the First Prince's immediate advisors is a step down that path and something easily done because it is expected of every First Prince at the start of their reign, but it is only one step and limited to only the highest level. I'm not saying that each ministry is rotten except for perhaps the Ministry of the Capellan March, but not much has been done to remove Michael's influence yet."

"We have been working on it," says Olivia, "I've cleared out the worst offenders from the Ministry of Foreign Relations."

"It isn't the worst offenders that we have to worry about, Olivia," Joan tells the younger woman, "It is those who are actually competent at their jobs and have the wrong loyalties, but know how to keep their heads down."

"Joan is right," says Mark, "I've been doing my best to clear out those I can't trust, but the problem is that not all of Michael's people are blatant about where their allegiance lies. The people who I know I can trust and the people who I know I can't trust are both massively outnumbered by the people who I don't know if I can trust or not. And because I don't know that I can trust them, I cannot use them, but because I don't know that I can't trust them, I cannot just dismiss them out of hand."

"How soon can we solve this problem?" demands Yvonne, looking frustrated.

"With time and hard work," answers Mark with a nod from Joan, "In the meantime, my domestic assets are going to be limited. I can trust that regardless of political loyalty that my agents will do their best for the Suns against the other states of the Sphere, but I only have so many reliable people within the Suns. If you are willing, Duke Sandoval, I would like to burrow some of your personnel. Just as the Ministry of the Capellan March is the most corrupt, no, the most compromised due to having the most of Michael's influence, the Ministry of the Draconis March is the least compromised due to having the least of Michael's sway. Right now, primary loyalty to House Sandoval is an acceptable substitute for primary loyalty to House Davion."

"I would be happy to," replies Aaron before frowning, "Though I must find it a cause of distress that we reached the point that we are plotting against one of our own. I understand why we must, but it is a shame that we have come to this."

"Michael's ambitions have gotten the better of him," says Joan distastefully, "The man has decided he deserves the throne and that greed exceeds his sense of duty and loyalty."

"I'll be keeping an eye out for assassination attempts, then," says Victoria, "Now enough about that weasel Hasek, what do we do with the Halstead Station expedition?"

"All three RCTs involved will need time to recover and rebuild," says Yvonne, "All of them took a pounding at the hands of the DCMS. I might suggest rotating out the current garrison to the frontlines and keep the Heavy Davion Guards, the 34th Avalon Hussars and 10th Deneb Light Cavalry as part of New Avalon's garrison until they have been rebuilt. The 1st Davion Guards and 3rd Davion Guards could do with some action to keep them sharp."

"They would be appreciated in the Draconis March, especially if the DCMS was hurt as badly at Halstead Station as the AFFS was," adds Aaron, "We could have some opportunities to exploit and the Davion Guards would be excellent help for that."

Victoria feels that it might be too blatantly favouring the Draconis March as the weaker Liaos could have opportunities of their own to be exploited, but Aaron Sandoval has been a loyal and faithful supporter while she is literally holding a meeting to discuss how to stop Michael Hasek from overthrowing her. It might not be the most militarily optimal choice, but from a perspective of rewarding loyalty, there is only one option for her.

"That can be arranged," replies Victoria, shooting Yvonne a look and the Prince's Champion gives her a nod of understanding.

"That leaves to discuss the Star League library books that they recovered," says Mark, "I'm sure everyone here understands the value that those things hold. Even Michael wouldn't be foolish enough to do anything to target them."

"You'll want to set up a secure research or education site using them," says Joan, "Obviously this is more the Ministry of Education's area than my own ministry, but these books could be used as the foundation of a new university, one built upon a Star League library."

"The remnants of a Star League library," warns Mark, "Hanse wasn't able to recover everything and while he got most of it out, some portions of it were destroyed to keep House Kurita from recovering them."

"A regrettable if necessary action," says Yvonne, "Hanse did what he had to, but I'll be damned if the thought of destroying such valuable treasures doesn't pain me."

"Hanse would be one of the most pained by such a decision," says Victoria solemnly, "God knows that he would appreciate their true worth more than I do. I'm willing to go ahead with the idea of building a new university around the recovered library though I'll need to speak with Minister Patel about the details."

"It would be a good use of competent, but unreliable agents in my ministry," says Mark excitedly, "Even those loyal to Michael wouldn't dare harm the recovered library materials and he wouldn't let the Federation's enemies damage them either. There is no benefit for him to do so and even when he fails in his bid for the throne, he still stands to gain from the Federation making use of them."

"You have a higher opinion of the Haseks than I do then," mutters Yvonne.

"I agree with Minister Butcher," says Aaron as he looks thoughtful, "Michael might be treasonous enough to make a bid for the throne and go so far as to resort to assassination, but he stands to benefit from being successful in those actions. I don't see him benefiting from targeting the library cache or letting harm come to it and so I don't see him doing anything to damage it or let it be damaged."

"I would also like to raise the possibility of using copies of the library as bargaining pieces, Victoria," suggests Olivia, "If you want to get the Lyrans and the Leaguers to agree to an alliance, then offering them copies of the library or at least parts of it would go a long way to sweetening the deal."

"I'll consider it," says Victoria.

***

So things are coming together and the arc of this story is reaching its climax as Victoria is going to finally face off with Michael for the throne. Additionally, Victoria is adjusting to the culture shock between her childhood and her new lifestyle, which of course brings up resentment of her father for not letting those be the same thing.

Chapter Four
Davion Palace, Avalon City, New Avalon
Crucis March, Federated Suns
2 March 3014

"Thank you for agreeing to meet with me," says Victoria to Ardan Sortek and Dana Stephenson as the three of them along with Tahmina sit in a meeting together.

Being the soldiers that they are, all four of them are in service dress and Victoria has picked one of the more spartan rooms in the Davion Palace for this little meeting. Victoria is hoping it will go more easily than her other meetings these days. It feels like half her time since coming to New Avalon has been in meetings, either dealing with the ministries, the AFFS or all of the nobles who want to meet her.

"You're the First Prince now," replies Ardan, earning a reproachful look from Dana and an annoyed one from Tahmina.

"Nonetheless, I am grateful for you coming here," continues Victoria, "It cannot be easy for you after Hanse's death."

"It has been almost a month now," says Ardan wearily, "Plenty of time to come to terms with it and we have to move on at some point."

"Grieving takes time and while you can get back to work, that doesn't make the grief go away," says Victoria, "But if you are insistent on going back to work, then I would ask if you are willing to support me like you intended to support Hanse. I know we don't have the same friendship, but if I am going to lead the Suns, I'm going to need every bit of help that I can get."

"I'll do my best," answers Ardan with an approving nod, "You might not be Hanse, but you are my First Prince. Though I would like to request that I remain as a MechWarrior in the AFFS. I'm not quite ready to become a desk jockey yet."

"Don't worry, Ardan, I'm not cruel like that," replies Victoria with a chuckle, "I will be transferring you to the Davion Heavy Guards. I haven't checked if it has gone official yet, but they, along with the 34 Avalon Hussars and the 10th Deneb Cavalry, will be rebuilding here on New Avalon as the new garrison while they recover from their losses."

"What about the 1st and 3rd Davion Guards?" inquires Dana.

"Being sent to the Draconis March for the official purpose of exploiting any weaknesses left by the losses the DCMS took at Halstead Station," answers Victoria, "And unofficially, I am sending them to repay Aaron Sandoval for the loyalty and support that he has shown me."

To Victoria's surprise, that earns a look of disapproval from the man, who then blushes slightly when she raises an eyebrow at him.

"You disapprove?" inquires Victoria as she stares at her brother's best friend while her own best friend is glaring at Ardan again.

"I just feel that military deployments shouldn't be based on politics," explains Ardan firmly even as he squirms in discomfort, "The soldiers place their faith in us to do what is best for the Federated Suns."

"In this case, supporting a loyal vassal for the support that they have provided is in the best interests of the Federated Suns," replies Victoria, "And it isn't like their talents would be wasted in the Draconis March. Not to mention that pulling the 34th Avalon Hussars and 10th Deneb Light Cavalry back for rebuilding leaves something of a gap in the Draconis March."

"And yet you are justifying your decision on politics not those military merits," points out Ardan, sounding a mixture of distaste and confusion.

"Similar arguments could be made for the military value of sending the Davion Guards to the Capellan March," explains Victoria, "At the end of the day, sending them to either March is a military sound choice so I am using politics to make my decision. And I won't be dishonest by pretending otherwise."

"You sound like Hanse," says Ardan wistfully.

"I hope to be a worthy successor to him," replies Victoria, "Ian, too."

"Better you than Hasek-Davion," says Ardan.

"I think we can all agree to that," adds Tahmina, "I don't know much about the guy, but I feel like he has been our biggest pain in the arse since we got to New Avalon."
"That certainly sounds like Michael," agrees Ardan.

"Hasek aside, I need to know something," says Victoria as she looks Ardan in the eye, "Can I count on you to publicly support me and carry out my orders? I don't mind you questioning me in private, in fact I welcome it if you think I am making a mistake or doing something wrong. But I will not be able to tolerate you questioning me in public. It would undermine my authority and I couldn't afford that even if I didn't have to worry about Michael snapping at my heels."

"Of course," answers Ardan and to his credit, he only lets a little of his indignation show, "I know how to be professional."

"Thank you, Ardan," says Victoria before she shifts her attention to her other guest, "Dana, so it is confirmed?"

"Yes, I'm pregnant," answers Dana Stephenson, "The doctors here on New Avalon confirmed what the MedTechs were suspecting."

"And you are certain that Hanse is the father?" asks Victoria, which gets Ardan's hackles up.

"That's-" starts the captain as he lends forward, but he stops as Dana places a hand on his shoulder.

"She has to make sure, Ardan," Dana tells him before turning her attention back to Victoria, "Yes, we were doing the deed prior to setting out on the mission and it is the right time frame for my pregnancy. Hanse is also the only person that I have been having sex with so he has to be the father."

"I'll accept that for now, but I'll have to order a paternity test to make certain," replies Victoria and she quickly elaborates as Ardan's reaction, "Not because I don't trust you, but because others won't and I'll have to answer them. If we can prove that you are having Hanse's child, then it will help smooth over some otherwise ruffled feathers."

"And what happens to me?" asks Dana.

"You can either accept an honourable discharge or take a transfer to a non-combat position, at least for the duration of the pregnancy," answers Victoria, "Also, I'll be giving you a security detail."

"Am I in danger?" asks Dana as the other woman frowns.

"Bluntly, yes," replies Victoria, "You all remember the sniper who took a shot at Hanses on Emerson?"

"You suspect Michael will try to kill Dana?" demands Ardan, sounding incredulous, "I can see why he would target Hanse or now you, but Dana?"

"Hanse's child will be my heir apparent unless I have kids of my own," explains Victoria, "Now, I'm not saying for certain that I think Michael will make a move against them, but I'm not willing to rule it out or take a risk. He has solid grounds to make an argument that Morgan has an equal or greater claim, especially once Morgan does his five years in the AFFS, but he might try cutting the knot like he did on Emerson."

"I appreciate the danger that I may be in," says Dana, "I didn't know Hanse for long, but he made sure I knew about the big threats. Not just the obvious ones like the ISF or Mask, but also internal threats like Duke Hasek-Davion's ambitions."

She really didn't know Hanse long in Victoria's mind. She knows that it is none of her business, especially now that Hanse is dead, but she always felt that Hanse and Dana had a rushed relationship. They had known each other for around forty days before her half-brother decided to make his proposal. That isn't a sign of a bad relationship and to their credit, the two of them did get along very well, but little over a month of dating is just too little time in Victoria's opinion.

The more cynical part of her is relieved that one of them is dead because they don't need to worry about the fallout should their rushed relationship break down.

"I would offer you a room in the Davion Palace, but Michael had his hooks deep into Ian's administration," Victoria tells the woman who would have been her sister-in-law if things had played out differently, "Hanse did a clean sweep of the ministers, but the ministries themselves and who knows what else are still corrupt as ever even if we have begun making some headway."

Victoria just hopes that Mark is doing a better job as the Minister of Information, Intelligence, and Operations than she did in her short tenure as Minister of Administrative Services. She did what she could, but Victoria spent her days just getting caught up with her responsibilities to even think about clearing out Michael's people let alone get started on actually doing so.

"So what do you suggest, sorry, what do you want me to do?" asks Dana.

"For the meantime, I would recommend staying with your unit," answers Victoria, "I can get you a trustworthy security detail and the people that you have trained, fought and bled alongside should provide a safe location for you to sleep and relax. Once you get far enough along in your pregnancy that you need to transfer to the desk job-actually, forgive me, I assumed you would be staying with your unit."

"It was an accurate assumption," replies Dana with a smile, "I would like to stay with the Avalon Hussars for as long as I can."

"Then I shall let you keep your current position until you are far enough along in your pregnancy that you will need to discharge or get a transfer to a non-combat position," says Victoria, "Once we get to that point, we'll reassess your living and security arrangements at the time. Hopefully we will have cleared out enough of Michael's people that we will have some degree of safety and security."

"I have no objections," says Dana.

"In that case, I would like to call this meeting to a close," says Victoria, "I would love to get to know the two of you better, but that will need to be at another time. Perhaps we could have dinner together."

"I would like that," replies Dana.

"As would I," adds Ardan and he pauses before saying, "Sorry about not retrieving Hanse's body. The Sword of Light was overrunning us, especially once Hanse's defence failed. We had no reasonable opportunity to retrieve his BattleMaster and the call was made-"

"Ardan," interrupts Victoria, speaking in a gentle, but firm voice, "You don't need to justify the decision to me. I read the reports myself and I concur with the decision and the reasoning behind it. It is highly regrettable, but no more so than Hanse's death itself and there was no benefit to suffering even greater losses for something that had minimal chances of success."

"We still should have brought him home," says Ardan morosely.

"I know and I'll make the Kuritans pay," declares Victoria, "Just another reason to send the Davion Guards to the Draconis March."

Davion Palace, Avalon City, New Avalon
Crucis March, Federated Suns
3 March 3014

"Morgan today and then I finally meet with Michael tomorrow," hums Victoria to herself as she and Tahmina walk through the corridors of the Davion Palace, "I am certainly looking forward to one of those than the other."

"It'll be great to see Morgan in person again," says Victoria wistfully, "He's a great guy to have around both on and off the battlefield."

"Do you think he'll be willing to play messenger to the Archon?" asks Tahmina, "I know it is a bit late to ask this now that he is already making landfall, but you think he will?"

"He will," answers Victoria, "Morgan is close to Katrina Steiner and he knows that I know that. It isn't part of his contract, but Morgan has delusions of achieving peace and an end to the Succession Wars. I'm certain he'll be willing to help my efforts with making peace with the Lyran Commonwealth at the very least."

"You know him better than I do so I'll trust-" Tahmina starts to say when it all happens.

Victoria thought nothing of it at first when the palace staff walked by, carrying something in her hands. The next thing the Princess Imperial knew was happening was the woman in the uniform of the palace staff firing a pistol concealed within the item she was carrying at her. It is too close for Victoria to dodge and she can only cry out in pain as the flechettes from the needler pistol rip through both the fabric of her dress and the flesh of her body.

The next thing Victoria knows is that she is falling to the ground in agony as Tahmina shoves her to one side. She hears the commotion, hearing footsteps as she watches her bodyguards tackle the would-be assassin to the ground while good old Tahmina is leaning against the wall, clutching her blood-soaked arm as tears of pain well in her eyes.

She hears more footsteps and a lot of yelling as the world begins to go black. The last thing that Victoria remembers before falling unconscious is someone shouting about a doctor whilst someone or somebodies begin to touch her unconscious form.

***

When Victoria wakes, she is laying down in an unfamiliar room and in a lot less pain. Wincing in dulled pain, she looks around the room and tries to sit up. Victoria appears to be in some sort of infirmary or other medical facility. Not exactly a surprise when she thinks about the last things she can remember.

"Please stay still, your majesty," says an unfamiliar man's voice, "Your injuries are still fresh and you need bed rest to recover."

"What happened?" demands Victoria in a raspy voice as someone gently pushes her back down.

"You were attacked in the Davion Palace of all places, ma'am," says the man again and this time, Victoria spots him, a middle-aged man in a military doctor's uniform with the insignia of the 1st Davion Guards, "An assassin dressed as one of the palace staff attacked you with a hold-out needler pistol, but I'm afraid that is all I can tell you right now. The investigation is still ongoing, you see."

"What about Tahmina?" asks Victoria as she remembers her best friend with her bloodied arm and then as an afterthought, "And Morgan? I was going to meet with him."

"Leftenant Colonel Singh was also injured in the attack after taking a shot meant for you," answers the doctor, "Thankfully, her wounds were less severe than yours as the majority of the flechettes which struck her only hit her left arm. With the medical technology and expertise here on New Avalon, she is expected to make a full recovery. As are you."

"As for Colonel Kell, he is waiting nearby," says someone else, but this time Victoria recognises him as someone from the security detail that Mark handpicked for her, "A judgement call was made that you would still want to speak with him. Speaking of which, I have made sure that this room is free from any bugs and secure from anyone listening in. You just need to receive the doctor's say so before we can send him in if you still desire to speak with him."

"I would," replies Victoria before shooting a look at the doctor, who sighs.

"Let me do some checks and potentially some additional treatment," says the doctor, "I must warn you that a full recovery will take at least a few weeks. Don't expect to go gallivanting about in the meantime."

"I won't," promises Victoria as she lets the man go about his work.

It has to be Michael behind this. No matter what the investigation officially turns up, Victoria knows that it has to be her brother-in-law and rival for the throne. The timing is too confidential for it not to be him. She wonders if this is how Hanse felt after the sniper missed their shot on Emeron. Maybe though she suspects he was in much less pain given that his attacker outright missed instead of merely scoring a non-lethal hit.

On the one hand, Victoria hopes that they can prove it is Michael's doing and nail that weasel to the wall. On the other hand, the man is popular enough that even with proof, acting so decisively against him would lead to, well, not a civil war, but an uprising that the Suns can't afford. Not to mention the blow to the Federation's unity. Victoria remembers Hanse telling her that was important, something about his investigations into the corruption of the Capellan March being undone if he caused a civil war.

Not for the first time and certainly not the last, Victoria decides that politics are a pain.

It isn't long before the doctor is done and she can have Morgan sent in. She spots her old friend as he walks into the room, pausing to speak with the doctor as the other man makes his exit. Victoria is too far away to overhear their hushed conversation, but she assumes it goes well from how both of them look okay with its outcome.

Morgan Kell looks the same as ever, a strong and fit man who is filled with confidence. Not arrogance or overconfidence, but someone who knows their value, where they belong and what they can get done. The sort of man that Victoria would want under her and now that she thinks about it, she does have him under her command. At least within the confines of his contract and until it ends.

"Morgan," says Victoria as she gives him a smile, "Good to see you looking as good as ever."

"I wish I could say the same, but when we were meeting today, I didn't expect you to be in a hospital gown," replies Morgan with a frown, "Do you know what happened? Everyone is being coy with me."

"Michael," growls Victoria, "Don't go around repeating that because I can't prove it yet, but he wants my throne and has no legitimate chance of getting it."

"So he is resorting to under the table methods," concludes Morgan, "Sounds like your own version of Aldo."

"He's worse than that because unlike your Free Skye problem, Michael is competent," replies Victoria, "Well, more competent than Lestrade. The matter is only made worse by the fact that Ian had Michael running the government for him whilst he was busy on the battlefield. Hanse took the first step towards clearing out his influence, but unfortunately, he only got to the first step before he…well, before everything that has happened recently."

"I can appreciate that," says Morgan sympathetically, "This is why you called me here? Because I figured you had something else in mind, but I'll help you where I can."

"No, Michael is an internal problem that I need to deal with internally," Victoria tells him before sighing, "No, what I want is-look, you still have those big dreams of yours? Of freedom, stopping destruction and bringing peace by being so good that nobody wants to fight you?"

"They haven't been crushed yet," answers Morgan with a sardonic voice and a grin.

"I want to make peace with both the Lyran Commonwealth and Free Worlds League," says Victoria, "An alliance with the Commonwealth against the Combine and an alliance with the League against the Confederation whilst getting the Commonwealth and the League to stop shooting each other. I know it is a bit of a long shot, but there are some unique circumstances right now that my advisors feel I could take advantage of to make it viable. Not likely mind you, but something that is within the realm of possibility rather than being a pipe dream."

"Well, I can't speak for Katrina, but I would be willing to help with that," says Morgan slowly as he gives Victoria a considering look, "If you don't mind me asking, what are those unique circumstances?"

"It is two-fold," replies Victoria, "One is that Anton Marik is about to start a civil war in the League with under the table support from the Liaos. The second is that we recovered the majority of a Star League-era library from Halstead Station, which wasn't worth Hanse's life in my opinion, but it is extremely valuable. I figured that I could-ugh, this hurts."

"You okay?" asks Morgan worriedly.

"Honestly, no, someone tried to kill me earlier and did a decent job of it," answers Victoria, "Anyway, I hoped to, for lack of a better term, bribe Katrina into not attacking the League during its civil war and leverage that into getting Janos into peace talks. I was thinking of offering copies of some of the data we recovered from Halstead to sweeten the deal, but it won't matter if neither one goes along with it. With Anton's upcoming revolt, I have some options to get leverage or goodwill with Janos, but I don't have much on Katrina. I understand that I am maybe overstepping here, but-"

"You want me to reach out to Katrina on your behalf," concludes Morgan, "Don't worry, I'm willing to help you out. It isn't the total peace that I desire, but getting three of the Successor States to stop fighting is something I am willing to help work towards."

"I'll draft a message for you to deliver to Katrina," says Victoria, giving him a relieved look, "Sorry about the circumstances, but I really wasn't expecting to be attacked by assassins in the Davion Palace of all places."

"It is as unthinkable as the Archon getting attacked by assassins in the Triad," says Morgan before pausing and adding, "Scratch that, it is more unthinkable with the Davion reputation for military professionalism while the Commonwealth has social generals."

"Right, we probably have the Commonwealth beat in some forms of corruption," mutters Victoria unhappily, "God, I'm worried about how Michael is going to rope this to his advantage."

"Well, I can't help you with that, but I will do what I can to plead your case to Katrina," says Morgan, "I won't go all out for the Suns like you Feddies would, but I consider this to be to the benefit of the Commonwealth. An alliance with the Federated Suns against the snakes and then getting the League off our back? I'll argue for that."

"Thanks, I'll arrange for some quick travel to Tharkad for you," Victoria tells him, "Speak with Olivia-that's Minister Fenlon of Foreign Relations, actually no, I'll organise a meeting between the two of you. She has the details on what I am willing to offer Katrina and I'll let her know that you're going to be my messenger to Katrina. Well, she already knows my plans, but I'll tell her that you've agreed to them."

"I'll let you sort that out then," says Morgan, "Best of luck dealing with Hasek-Davion. I have a feeling that you're going to need it."

Okay, reaching the climax of the first arc is taking longer than expected. We have Ardan, Dana and Morgan covered in this chapter and by the time I was finished with that last one, I realised this chapter was getting too long. Anyway, Victoria is establishing a relationship with Ardan, Dana is pregnant with Hanse's kid, Victoria is attacked by one of Michael's assassins and Morgan agrees to be a messenger to the Archon.

Next chapter will be Michael making his play and I am hoping to wrap up this first arc in the next update or two.

Chapter Five
Davion Palace, Avalon City, New Avalon
Crucis March, Federated Suns
5 March 3014

When Victoria wakes on the third day of her injuries, it is to her half-sister Marie waiting at the side of her bed. Marie Laura Hasek-Davion, the wife of Michael Hasek-Davion and someone who Victoria has some very mixed feelings about. Especially since she doesn't know why her sister has betrayed their family or if she has actually betrayed them in full.

Why does she support Michael? Did she know about the sniper on Emerson? Did she know about the attack three days ago? That last thought sends Victoria's heart pounding and she glances at the reassuring presence of her security detail, standing discreetly out of the way, but still ready to leap into action if needed. That reassurance is stifled by the presence of Marie's own security, men that, to the best of Victoria's knowledge, were handpicked by Michael to protect his wife.

"How are you, Victoria?" asks Marie softly.

"Someone tried to kill me in the Davion Palace of all places and did a decent job of it so I'm rather upset," Victoria tells her bluntly, "Where do we stand, Marie? Because I'm rather pissed about the attempt on my life."

"I am also unhappy with your injuries," says Marie and Victoria frowns at her words, "And I have expressed such sentiments to my husband. I would rather not lose my last sibling, especially not so soon after losing the rest."

"How is Morgan?" asks Victoria in a blatant change of conversation to buy herself some time to mull over her sister's words, "I was informed that you and Michael brought him with you."

"Still sleeping," answers Marie, "I thought I would come and visit you before he woke for the day. I can come back and bring him with me later if you wish to see him."

"I might take you up on that," says Victoria, "So where do we stand? We're sisters, but this is the second time we've met in person. We've exchanged letters via HPG, but…"

"You are my sister even if we haven't been that close and I don't want to lose you after losing so much of my family so recently," says Marie.

"How does that play into Michael trying to usurp my throne," grumbles Victoria.

"I make a point of staying out of politics," replies Marie, "I have never been one for it, especially when it is family playing politics against each other."

"And yet you married Michael," snaps Victoria, unable to keep her tongue in check between the frustration from the recent attempt on her life and all the stress from the work dumped on her shoulders with Hanse's death.

"It was for love and the politics of later years had yet to come," answers Meek Marie wistfully.

"I'm going to call our conversation short, Marie," says Victoria, "Not that I don't want to talk with you, but I don't want to do so right now, not with everything that is going on. Feel free to come back with Morgan later, but I would rather reassume our talk once everything is settled."

"As you wish, Victoria," says Meek Marie and Victoria feels a pang of regret before crushing it as she reminds herself that Meek Marie is de facto aligned with her enemy.

Oh why is her only surviving sibling married to the man who is trying to usurp her throne and attempted to have her killed?

***

"How are you feeling, my Prince?" asks Aaron Sandoval as the Duke of Robinson makes his visit to Victoria.

"Eager to get out and about again," answers Victoria, "How bad is it out there? I know it can't be too bad because I haven't been swamped, but Michael arriving on the surface the day after I was attacked."

"Michael has certainly been busy making a nuisance of himself," says Aaron with an unrestrained scowl in the relative privacy of Victoria's private medical room, where the only other people around are their respective security details, "He's made a big show of his arrival to the public and media about how he regrets that the Princess Imperial was attacked in the Davion Palace whilst making subtle remarks about how you are overstepping your place and being presumptive about your status."

"And then he went to the High Council," concludes Victoria with a grimace.

"Effectively so even if he didn't officially," confirms Aaron, "He met with a few people first, making backroom deals and getting a feel for the land. Almost certainly a continuation of what he had already been doing from his DropShip since he jumped in-system. Things have been going about as well as can be expected. He has been making some headway, especially with widespread support from the Capellan March, but he is fighting an uphill battle. I've been doing my best to push back against him on your behalf and as expected, the representatives from the Outback are seeing the choice between you and Michael as a choice between support for their worlds and support for the Capellan March."

"I presume that means things are going in my favour," says Victoria.

"They certainly are," replies Aaron, "The Capellan March supports their duke for the most part, but without the Draconis March and the Outback, Michael can't win. Even the undecided representatives are inclined to side with House Davion by default and right now, that means you. It was good thinking to get my involvement in this. I have no doubts that Michael would have tried to use his marriage to your sister to turn this into a Davion versus Davion affair, but with my resistance, the optics is myself representing House Sandoval and the Draconic March, him representing House Hasek and the Capellan March while you represent House Davion and the Crucis March."

"That's some good news and music to my ears," says Victoria as she gives Aaron a grateful smile, "Thank you for your support, Aaron. I don't know what I would have done without it, but I would be far worse off."

"I am glad that you appreciate my support," says Aaron before his face grows grimmer, "I could hardly do less than be loyal, especially after Michael has…I should let you know that I fully agree with your assessment that Michael was behind the attempt on your life. I must admit I wasn't fully sure that Michael was behind Emeron and I was just giving you and Hanse the benefit of the doubt, but I can't see how Michael isn't behind what happened a few days ago. The Davion Palace is supposed to be secure and the First Prince protected in it. For someone to get so close, I fully believe that it is a result of Michael using his influence over the government that he acquired in Ian's time to eliminate a rival he could not hope to legitimately defeat."

"Me too," agrees Victoria, anger tinging her voice, "The usurping weasel tried to have me killed. I hope that Mark or someone else finds evidence of his wrongdoing, but I'm doubtful they will. Michael has always been a thorough planner who avoids leaving anything leading back to him. Maybe he slipped up with the short time frame that events have given him, but I'm not going to get my hopes up."

"On the subject of Michael's attempts to usurp you, would you like to know the sort of arguments he is making against you before the High Council?" inquires Aaron and Victoria sighs.

"Not particularly, but if I am to fulfil my responsibilities to the best of my ability, I ought to," replies Victoria, "How bad is it?"

"Thankfully, he is publicly staying within the confines of civility, but he is resorting to everything short of direct ad hominem attacks," says Aaron, "Just minor things that he can justify as concerns. Such as your legitimacy as a Davion, but with Ian legitimising you, Hanse declaring you his Princess Imperial and you having served your five years in the AFFS, he isn't making much headway with that outside of anyone who already supports him. However, he has been claiming that we need a Davion for a First Prince and you are just a London."

"Annoying, but I had expected that line of attack given his limited options," says Victoria, "Let me guess, he is also going after my lack of administrative experience."

"It is the other obvious line of argument against you so yes, he has," replies Aaron, "He is fully acknowledging your combat record, but he is pushing himself as a superior candidate based on having both military and civil experience while you are limited to just the former. To the rat's credit, he is acknowledging that you've spent a couple of months as the Minister of Administrative Services, but he is dismissing it as insignificant compared to the responsibilities of running the Federated Suns and him having run three ministries at once in the past."

"Unfortunately, we don't have much way to refute that," grumbles Victoria.

"I have been pointing to how you've been doing since arriving here and assuming the duties of the First Prince," points out Aaron.

"And I appreciate that, but at the end of the day, facts are facts and not all of them favour us," says Victoria, "Okay, what is Michael's end goal here? Setting himself up as First Prince directly or becoming a regent for Morgan?"

"He is being noncommittal about it," answers Aaron with another scowl, "Michael is trying to leave it open to go either way and he has been annoyingly wiggly about it. I have tried to pin him down and get an answer one way or another, but it is proving easier said than done even when I directly question him on the subject."

"Wiggling out of trouble is Michael's expertise," notes Victoria sourly, "Once again, thank you for the support, Aaron. It is gratifying to know that I can count on at least one March and its leader to have my back."

"I'm only doing my duty," replies Aaron and from there, their conversation turns to less grave topics than who the future First Prince will be.

***

"My ministry is rotten," says Mark as he walks up to Victoria's bedside, those being the first words to come out of his mouth, "I don't know how that assassin got close enough to you for their attack, but I do know that Michael couldn't have pulled it off without help from inside my ministry. Even if it wasn't Michael, I would bet my life that they had people from MIIO aiding them."

"Hello, Victoria, how are you?" replies Victoria sarcastically before switching to a false cheery voice, "Hi, Mark, I'm going fine apart from my injuries and my brother-in-law trying to usurp me, thanks for asking."

"Jokes aside, I need to prioritise cleaning house more than I realise," continues Mark with an eye roll at Victoria, "That assassin shouldn't have been able to get a needler pistol into the Davion Palace let alone get close enough to you to use it."

"That bad?" asks Victoria.

"Someone just tried to kill the Princess Imperial who might as well be the First Prince in the Davion Palace!" exclaims Mark, "You can be such a Periphery hick at times, Victoria. Yes, this is an extremely big deal. Heads are going to roll over this, literally so."

"Okay, the attempt on my life is a big deal, I get it," says Victoria, "What news have you got me, Mark? Good or bad? A mixture of the two?"

"Good news is that unlike you, most people realise the severity of an assassin almost killing the Princess Imperial and future First Prince in the Davion Palace," says Mark, "Because of that, I have a lot more latitude to clear out MIIO. As I said, this is bad enough that heads are going to roll and a failure of this magnitude makes people more forgiving when I go on a purge."

"You're purging your ministry?" exclaims Victoria.

"It needed to be done at some point, this just speeds things up," answers Mark with a shrug, "I was always planning to rid MIIO of Michael's supporters, this incident just gives me the grounds to do so in a more open manner and provides an alternative motive and reasoning for removing them. While it will be years before I truly rid myself of Michael's legacy, I am feeling confident enough to say that the Ministry of Information, Intelligence and Operations will be more mine than Michael's"

"That certainly sounds like good news," says Victoria, "I'm going to guess that there is a catch."

"I'm confident that I'll be able to prevent another attack from happening, but I have low hopes about catching everyone responsible," answers Mark, "I have caught those immediately responsible, but they have had helpers who have covered their tracks to slip away and I am certain they had help from others. Or maybe I am just being paranoid. Between this attack and Michael's presence, I've been acutely reminded that Michael still has more influence over MIIO than I do. And I'm not the only one."

"How bad is it?" asks Victoria, her mouth going dry.

"You have the very top in your corner and I'm sure plenty of people are just going about their jobs, but Michael is attempting to turn the ministries against their ministers and yourself," Mark tells her before giving a shrug, "It is a mixed situation. On the one hand, we are getting push and resistance, but on the other hand, we have the authority at the end of the day and we serve at your pleasure. If Michael takes the throne, then things will work out for them and badly for us, but until then, it is just giving us grounds to clear out the troublemakers."

"What does this mean for me?" asks Victoria, "How screwed am I going to be?"

"Your government is going to be hurting for a bit as the ministry transitions from being Hasek-Davion's to being yours," answers Mark bluntly, "Things will recover in the long run, but the short term is going to be painful. One of those situations where things are going to get worse before they get better. Well, not worse, but you're going to be reorganising the central government and that'll be disruptive. Think of it like having to replace half of your officers and some of your enlisted, where you'll recover from it, but the adjustment period is going to be difficult. It isn't quite the same, but you get my point."

"I do," says Victoria before she throws herself back down into her hospital bed, "God damn Michael for all of this. Why does that arse have to be an ambitious traitor?"

"On the bright side, you have one dependable March lord," says Mark, "I doubt the man has mentioned it himself, but Aaron has been going to bat for you. That attempt on your life lit a fire in the man and he has been waging war for you in the High Council. He's been meeting Michael low blow for low blow. Michael questions your right to call yourself a Davion? Aaron brings up his own right to call himself a Davion and how his extended family has even less right to call themselves Davions than you. Michael brings up his civil record and your lack of one? Aaron has been retorting with how the Capellan March's situation has deteriorated under Michael's leadership. It seems that the Sandovals are stepping up to make up for where the Haseks are falling short."

"Well, I know which March to favour," jokes Victoria, but Mark doesn't laugh.

"Please don't make jokes like that," asks Mark, "I know you aren't serious, but if you got overheard by the wrong people, it would cause you trouble. Michael would certainly latch onto your words to use them against you, even if meant cherry-picking them and conventionally ignoring the context."

"Right, right, the First Prince can't afford to make flippant jokes," says Victoria, "It's going to be an adjustment."

"I'll send Tahmina over," says Mark, "Spending some time with a friend will be good for you. Oh and I'll see if Morgan is willing to pay you another visit before he leaves."

***

So the next chapter is definitely going to be the confrontation with Michael and the finale of the first arc. I don't feel it is a spoiler at this point to say that Victoria is going to emerge as the First Prince, not Michael.

Anyway, I wanted Marie and Victoria to have a sisterly moment, but when I was writing it, I realised that it shouldn't work. Marie is married to the man who is trying to usurp Victoria and did try to assassinate her. The fact she isn't willing to act against Michael as far as Victoria is aware is something she isn't willing to put up with right now so any sisterly bonding is being put on hold.

As for the rest, Michael's influence is still running strong in the ministries whilst Aaron Sandoval is now one of Victoria's biggest supporters. The old House Davion sourcebook says that Aaron is ambitious as Michael except he cares more about his power than his people. Because of that, I am treating him as a good counterpart to Victoria. Since Aaron has decided that only Michael could be behind the assassin in the Davion Palace, he is going on a warpath against Michael's political ambitions.

Chapter Six
Davion Palace, Avalon City, New Avalon
Crucis March, Federated Suns
6 March 3014

"You know, this is going to be the first time that I will meet with Michael since he arrived," says Victoria to Ran Felsner as she limps down the back corridors of the Davion Palace, towards where the High Council is gathered for yet another of their meetings.

Said meetings have been taking place daily since the High Council gathered on New Avalon following Hanse's death and Victoria intends to put an end to them today. Her doctors have declared her fit enough to leave her bed behind though she is still barred from anything strenuous or exciting. Her current plans are definitely a violation of those medical orders, but the needs of the Federated Suns require her to take the risk to her health.

Both of them are wearing their dress uniforms as they walk with an escort made from a mixture of Victoria's MIIO security detail and her bodyguards from the Davion Guards. Victoria has her Diamond Sunburst displayed proudly on the right side of her chest while Ran is doing the same with his Medal Excalibur. Both medals are bound to command respect within the martially oriented Federated Suns even if the High Council is a civilian organisation as you don't get far in Federation politics without gaining a respect for the AFFS and those who have served in it.

"Hopefully you'll catch him by surprise then," says Ran and Victoria is grateful to have the support of the commander of the Davion Heavy Guards.

If-no, when she emerges as First Prince, she will promote him to Marshal. He is fully qualified for it and Victoria remembers Hanse mentioning he was considering doing it after he got back from Halstead Station. More cynically, promoting their CO as one of her first acts as First Prince would be a good way to garner support and loyalty from the Davion Heavy Guards.

God, why does she have to think so mercenary these days?

"I doubt he expects to win at this point barring my death, but I do hope he isn't expecting me to intervene like this," replies Victoria as they approach the chambers of the High Council, getting close enough to hear the not-quite shouting of Aaron Sandoval and Michael Hasek-Davion, "Alright, here we go."

With Ran at her side, Victoria limps into the chambers, drawing the attention of everyone inside. Not instantly before conversations begin to trail off as they realise who has entered the room and after a few seconds have passed, everyone is watching them. The Princess Imperial and the CO of the Davion Heavy Guards walk towards the podium, where Michael Hasek-Davion stands, having been speaking up there when Victoria made her entrance.

Michael doesn't move as they approach, earning himself a disapproving look from Ran. For her part, Victoria ignores her brother-in-law. She knows what she is doing and she knows that Michael doesn't have the influence to stop her. If he tries to make a fuss, she'll just go ahead with forcing the contest between them.

"Colonel London," says Michael as Victoria and Ran join him on the podium, causing some gasps from their audience.

"Leftenant Colonel Hasek-St. Claire," replies Victoria, earning a red glare from Michael and even more gasps from their observers and a chuckle from Ran.

Michael starts to say something else to her, but Victoria just ignores him as she turns to face the audience.

"You had your time to talk, now it is time to vote," says Victoria in her best commanding officer's voice, her own words drowning out her brother-in-law's more softly spoken words, "I am the Princess Imperial and it is time to decide whether you will honour and respect my status as the heir apparent."

"That is-" starts Michael from behind her whilst a multitude of people in the crowd begin to talk, but all of them are interrupted by Ran.

"Victoria Davion for First Prince!" roars Ran as he raises a fist into the air, "All those who say aye!"

"Aye!" shouts Aaron.

"Aye!" seconds Olivia.

"Aye!" thirds Yvonne and after that, it is too much for Victoria to individually track.

The ministers, with the exception of Michael himself, support her and so do the majority of those from the Draconis March, almost everyone from Outback. The support from the Crucis March is less clear, but Victoria thinks there were more of them saying aye than remaining silent. Unsurprisingly, she didn't receive much approval from the representatives originating from the Capellan March with next to none supporting her, but that was to be expected.

She has a majority, not much of one, but that majority is all that she needs. As a few people change their minds and shout some last-minute ayes. A bit fair weather.

"All those who say nay!" calls out Michael from beside Victoria, "Nay!"

"Nay!" shouts someone else who Victoria does not recognise at all and soon the crowd is yelling out their nays.

And while they are louder and more numerous than Victoria would like, the nays are still quieter and fewer than Victoria's ayes. She shoots a glance at Michael, who seems…not angry or frustrated or anything to Victoria's eyes. In fact, Michael seems to be calm and accepting as far as the new First Prince can tell and while she thinks she might see some brittleness in his smile, she might just be imagining what she wants to see.

"All hail our new First Prince!" shouts Ran to a thunderous, but not total applause from the crowd, "All hail First Prince Victoria Eveline Davion!"

***

"Congratulations on your victory, Victoria," says Marie and she seems to be sincere enough that Victoria decides to give her half-sister the benefit of the doubt.

For now, at least.

"Thank you, Marie," says Victoria as she sips her cup of tea, "Where do we stand now?"

The two of them are holding their meeting in Victoria's personal quarters with their respective bodyguards standing outside. It is a bit of a risk, but Marie isn't packing any weapons and Victoria can't imagine Meek Marie daring to attack her. Even if she did, Victoria is confident in her hand-to-hand combat skills to take on someone who failed out of Albion and hasn't served in a military role since.

"You're my sister and I would like for us to have a relationship," answers Marie, "How are you faring now that everything is over?"

"It has been a weight off my shoulders," admits Victoria, "To formally and officially be First Prince. I already have been bearing the responsibilities of the position since I arrived here so not having to fight to keep it is a great relief. My injuries are still frustrating, but I am expected to be fully recovered in a couple of weeks and by the end of the month at the latest. I'm also enjoying the luxuries of the Davion Palace though it can be quite the culture shock at times."

"In what way?" inquires Marie.

"The service for one," answers Victoria, "To have people available to just carry out my personal requests as soon as I make them, I often forget that it is real. Not to mention that there are people who take care of doing my laundry, making my bed and other basic stuff that I had to take care of whilst I was growing up and in the military. And the food here is great. I don't have to worry about menus or whatnot, I just make a request and the chefs will just get to work on it. It's great, but it can get a bit overwhelming at times. You have no idea how much easier having a fixed set of options is when making a choice."

"I'll admit it isn't something I think about much except for when I am travelling on a DropShip," replies Marie, "Between growing up here and living with Michael on New Syrtis, I haven't wanted for much."

"Except for the affections of family," notes Victoria, "That is one thing that both of us lost out on thanks to that overrated arse."

"You seem to have overcome it," says Marie, "I'm ashamed to admit that is more than I have done."

"You are closer to me in that than you are willing to admit," replies Victoria, "I don't know how much of it is an act and how much of it is true, but I do know that you are playing it up for the public. You chose to fail out of Albion and you have more spine than you publicly let on"

"I suppose it was too much to hope you would be fooled," admits Marie, "Hanse never fell for it either once he was old enough to realise what was going on."

"Back to my earlier question, where do we stand?" asks Victoria, "I beat your husband for the throne so where does that leave us? Are we just going to go on politely pretending that this never happened? Or are we going to address the fact he tried to have me killed just like he did with Hanse?"

"I don't approve of either of those things, but I am not in a position to just leave Michael," replies Marie before letting out a resigned sigh, "I would have to leave Morgan behind and Michael hasn't lost his good qualities, just gained bad ones. I know it is no excuse, but Michael was once my knight in shining armour, arriving to take me away from the dismissive and bullying Davion to a life of happiness on New Syrtis, And for a while, we did have that and is why we had Morgan, but then things changed. I don't know if Michael was revealing his true ambitions all along or if he had acquired them there and then, but his aspirations grew into what they are today."

"And you still love him," says Victoria.

"It is more of a fondness these days than the passion we used to have, but yes, I still love Michael despite everything," admits Marie, "Even if I could have the same sort of lifestyle here on New Avalon as a Davion, I don't want to leave Morgan or Michael behind."

"Sounds like a crappy situation, you are in," says Victoria, "But it is still going to cause us strife in the future. Even if I don't find proof of his involvement, if Michael keeps up with the assassins and other attempts to undermine me, it will impact our relationship. I want to remain in touch with you, Marie, but there is only so much I can put up with before you continuing to stay with him isn't something I can overlook."

"Then I will tell him that you found evidence that he was behind the assassin," says Marie and Victoria gapes at her, "That you are keeping quiet out of a desire to protect the unity of the Federation and avoid a costly civil war. That this meeting between us today is a discrete way of letting him know that you know using me as a messenger. It won't get rid of his ambitions, but it will check him and make him think twice about moving against you."

"What the 'ell, Marie?" demands Victoria after a moment of stunned silence, "Where in the name of the Lord is this coming from?"

"You were right about me playing it up for the public," replies Not So Meek Marie, "We might not know each other well, but we are sisters and we are the last two survivors of our siblings. I would like to maintain that bond and if that means bluffing my husband into not committing further treason then so be it. Speaking of which, you should use me as a middleman between you and Michael. Your ability to hide what you are really thinking isn't good enough to fool my husband and would give the game away."

"Right, don't speak with Michael directly because I'm not a good enough liar," replies Victoria, "Wow, this has just blown my mind. I'm not sure about what to say."

"How about a change in subject," suggests Marie, "What part of your new lifestyle are you enjoying? I've always enjoyed going to the library and learning new things from books though I always made sure to keep that private. I never wanted to reveal how smart I really was so I could stay under the radar, but reading away in a library is one of my favourite things to do."

"I'm enjoying the dresses," admits Victoria, "Not the impractical fashion-based things, but the practical and comfy gowns that both make me look pretty and feel good to wear. It might be a little vain of me, but looking good is something I enjoy. Not to bash on wearing a military uniform and all, but there is just something nice about wearing a skirt or something that shows my curves."

"It is a perfectly normal thing to enjoy," says Marie as she smiles at the younger woman, "In fact, I don't believe that I've met a woman who doesn't enjoy dressing up."

"Yvonne doesn't," points out Victoria.

"Yvonne just dislikes the politics of attending formal events," replies Marie, "I can assure you that she likes to dress up for a special occasion as much as any woman. Don't worry about being vain, Victoria, just get a nice wardrobe of comfy dresses that look good on you and then wear them when you can get away with it. God knows that most of the nobility takes it to greater extremes, even here in the Suns."

"I don't like those formal events either," says Victoria, "I just enjoy the dresses."

"I'm afraid being First Prince means you will be attending a lot of those formal events," says Marie, "I can get away with my persona of being afraid of attention and being withdrawn, but the First Prince has no such luxury."

"I know, I know, but if Ian could survive it for a whole decade, then I can certainly cope," replies Victoria.

"Ian spent most of his time on the battlefield, leaving running the Suns to Michael," warns Marie.

"I know that Ian's style of ruling won't work for me, but I'll get by," says Victoria, "I'm good at making friends and forming connections. I can handle small talk and buttkissing at some dances."

"I suppose you have a good track record at that," agrees Marie, "Michael has been complaining about Duke Sandoval and Minister Fenlon bringing your foreign connections during the High Council debates."

"I have a good set of ministers," says Victoria, "Something I inherited from Hanse and I am very grateful for that. Things would have turned out very differently if it wasn't for them having my back."

"Using Aaron Sandoval as a counter to Michael was a very smart political move," says Marie, "If that was your idea, then you'll do fine. And if it wasn't, just keep listening to whoever came up with the idea."

"You can count on that," says Victoria before sighing, "Will you be staying on New Avalon long enough to do some dress shopping?"

"Hmm, I don't think your security will allow that," points out Marie as she gives a slight frown, "No offence to you, Victoria, but I'm afraid that our positions of power don't allow for such casual acts. We are too important to just be allowed out like that. Any shopping trip would need to be pre-planned with our destination and journey being secured ahead of time. You won't be doing your own shopping anymore and it will be delegated to servants to go shopping on your behalf if they don't get someone to just make whatever you want."

"Ugh," grumbles Victoria as she puts her head in her hands, "That's going to be another bit of culture shock. No more going shopping while off-duty with Tahmina, I guess."

"I'm sure you'll find alternative ways to spend time together," says Marie comfortingly, "And speaking of alternative ways of spending time together, let's discuss what we can do together before I return to New Syrtis."

***

And here is the end of the first arc of the story. I'm not entirely sure about how I handled Michael and Victoria interacting, but I think that their lack of direct interaction works as Victoria uses intermediaries and subordinates to fight Michael's attempts to seize the throne. Anyway, Victoria won and now Michael is going to slink on back to New Syrtis and sulk about someone else becoming First Prince for the second time in less than a year.

We also have Marie and Victoria confronting their differences and being sisterly. I'm going with Marie being smarter than she lets on, but secretly sabotaging Michael when he goes up against her family when it comes to what Marie Hasek-Davion is really like. Also she is in a messed up situation while Victoria likes pretty dresses and continues to suffer from culture shock.

The next arc will be looking at the effects of Victoria's foreign outreach and canon will be thoroughly derailed as even more butterflies start to flap their wings.

Chapter Seven
Hilton Head, North America
Terra, Solar System
23 April 3014

"How has this been allowed to happen?" demands Precentor Dieron as the man looks around the table where the rest of the First Circuit is gathered, "Three of the five Successor States have declared ceasefires with each other and are now engaged in peace talks!"

"Now, now, it isn't quite that bad," says Julian Tiepolo, Primus of ComStar, "The Lyran Commonwealth, Federated Suns and Free Worlds League have only agreed to peace talks and given the grievances and outright hatred between the former two, anything coming from it is far from guaranteed."

Of course, Julian is downplaying things even if every word he said was true. Yes, it is true that the peace talks are unlikely to be fully successful, but there is a strong possibility that the Commonwealth and the Suns will come to an accord against the Draconis Combine. The groundwork had already been laid by First Prince Ian Davion at the start of the decade and there is a very real chance of a military alliance between the two nations emerging. It would be unpleasant, but hardly the downfall of the Blessed Order.

Unfortunately, it isn't the only thing to have gone wrong. While it cost them their First Prince, the Federated Suns had retrieved a library dating back to the time of the Star League. Those works of invaluable knowledge threatened to undo the work of Operation Holy Shroud as the Federated Suns now had the potential to begin undoing the technological regression of the Succession Wars. A danger compounded by two things, the first being that ROM had proven unable to get anyone close to the library cache as the First Prince had put an excessive amount of security on the library cache.

Though Julian concedes that given that the disproportionate protection around the books had proven sufficient to keep them safe so maybe it wasn't all that excessive. On the other hand, the First Prince didn't know about ROM's actions or its existence so while there might be a real threat, Victoria Davion had no knowledge of it when arranging the security of the Halstead Station library cache.

The second thing increasing the threat of the Halstead Station cache was the First Prince's willingness to share it. It was one thing for a Successor State to acquire some knowledge of the past and guard it jealously, it was another thing for them to offer to share it with two other Successor Lords. Yet Victoria Davion had no problem using copies of the Halstead Station library as bargaining chips in her diplomatic outreach to the Archon and the Captain-General.

And then there is the disaster that was to be the Marik Civil War. It was a simple enough idea to destabilise the growing economy of the Free Worlds League whose Eagle was acquiring too much value compared to the Blessed Order's own C-Bills. Anton Marik and Maximilian Liao had already done much of the work on their own and it was just up to Precentor ROM and ComStar to ensure that things played out according to Blake's Vision. Everything was going as planned until Victoria Davion rose to power within the Federated Suns and decided to act completely out of character for a Scavenger Lord.

Oh, it was admirable in some ways for one of the Great Houses of the Inner Sphere to take a break from the pointless destruction for selfish gain to make an earnest attempt at peace. Or not so earnest and not so admirable since the First Prince was very much aiming to get allies against her neighbouring rivals. Who knows how long Victoria Davion's desire for peace would last once the Draconis Combine and Capellan Confederation were out of her way.

Perhaps Victoria Davion would revert to type in time, but now the Primus and the rest of the Blessed Order had a set of minor crises combining into one major crisis. For everything that ROM had predicted and planned for, the First Prince deciding to inform the Captain-General of his brother's treachery ahead of Anton openly declaring his revolt had not been something that they expected. Instead ROM had been blindsided by it as Janos Marik had his brother arrested for treason and secured his position within League politics.

Perhaps worst of all was that Vesar Kristofur had been arrested alongside Anton and they had yet to identify the fate of the Precentor ROM. A very troublesome prospect given the amount of trouble that Vesar could cause the Blessed Order. At least there was a silver lining that Vesar's hands-on approach to his work left the Primus with the perfect scapegoat. After all, dealing with all of this was Vesar's job and it wasn't Julian's fault that the Precentor ROM had failed so terribly.

"I am more concerned about how our plans for the League had been completely annihilated," Precentor Atreus, "We set up House Marik and the Free Worlds League to have a civil war and now it is completely averted with minimal fighting. And thanks to the Davions of all people."

"I am more concerned with the loss of Precentor ROM myself," says Julian in lieu of directly addressing Aliz's point, "As much as I would like to make Vesar explain his decision making to us, the bigger issue is that our Precentor ROM got captured by one of the Successor Lords! Does anybody have an update on Vesar's current status?"

"He is still in SAFE's custody," answers Aliz, "I don't know much about his current state, but I can infer from how I am still being treated the same that he hasn't talked. Yet. I recommend in the strongest possible terms that we do something to address this security breach waiting to happen."

"I agree," adds Precentor Tharkad in an instant, "We cannot allow the former Precentor ROM to reveal our secrets and given the state of affairs that he has left us in, I am not particularly concerned about getting him back in one piece or even alive."

"I agree that keeping Vesar from talking about the Blessed Order's true goals and activities is of the highest priority," says Julian, glancing at the new Precentor ROM as he adjusts his glasses, "What options do we have to ensure that your predecessor remains silent for good?"

"I have a Delta/Epsilon team on standby," answers the newly appointed Precentor ROM, Tojo Jarlath, "Using P12 Tornado power armour, I have a strong confidence in their ability to reach Vesar Kristofur and eliminate him. However, retrieving them is a different problem so we should consider this to be a suicide mission. A public, messy suicide mission where we tip off the existence of our Tornado armour to the Successor States, which could impact the Blessed Order's ability to operate in the future."

"A lot worse will be done to our ability to operate if Vesar talks," says Precentor Sian, "I vote that we approve the mission. The sooner this is dealt with, the better."

After a quick vote, the result is unanimous as the entirety of the First Circuit is fully away of what will happen if the Free Worlds League gets the former Precentor ROM to talk. The meeting remains on the subject of Vesar and how to avoid a repeat incident until Julian decides to get the meeting back on track.

"I believe that we have spent enough time discussing the failings of our old Precentor ROM for now," says Julian, "Jarlath, could you share what has become of Anton's failed revolt?"

"Janos showed up with enough force to seize New Delos and has crushed his brother's Ducal Guard regiments," answers Jarlath, "The captured war material has made up for the losses and then some. The Third Marik Militia and Eighteenth Marik Militia have had their officer corps arrested and their remaining members are undergoing a purge for traitors. The 12th Atrean Dragoons are undergoing a similar fate except it is being performed by loyal members of that regiment against those who were going to side with Anton. The Fourth and Fifth Regular Hussars have quietly remained loyal and due to the political difficulties of moving against Regulus without clear proof of their disloyalty, the Captain-General has let it go though he is certainly going to remember it."

"So any chance of a civil war in the League is gone," notes Precentor Sian bitterly.

"And House Davion is responsible for it," says Aliz, "We decoded the messages too late to act on the information, but First Prince Victoria Davion is responsible for tipping off Janos Marik to his brother's treachery and arranged for proof of her claims to be delivered to the Captain-General. Furthermore, she is the driving factor behind the ceasefire and the proposed peace talks. Without her pushing for them and using her connections to the inner circles of both Katrina Steiner and Janos Marik, we wouldn't be in this mess."

"And she holds the Star League library that was unearthed," adds Precentor Dieron, "What can be done about her? Can we not cause internal trouble for her? I remember that the Haseks were causing trouble for the Davions with the current head of House Hasek being ambitious enough to take the Davion name for himself."

"Unfortunately, Duke Hasek-Davion has been neutralised by the First Prince," replies Precentor New Avalon in frustration, "I am unable to identify the details, but Michael Hasek-Davion was behind the attempt on Victoria Davion's life. The First Prince has proof of his duplicity and is apparently sitting on it to avoid a civil war between herself and Hasek-Davion. For us, that means that Hasek-Davion won't be taking any actions against the First Prince for the foreseeable future because while a civil war might be undesirable to the First Prince, it would be the end of him and his ambitions under the current circumstances."

"I will look into opportunities to do something about the First Prince, but judging by how difficult it is proving to get at the Halstead Station cache, I am uncertain that anything will come up to directly strike at her," says Jarlath and Julian feels a sense of approval at how well his appointee is fitting into his new position, "I recommend that we look into indirect ways of targeting Victoria Davion and the Federated Suns if we wish to take action against her."

"I feel that all this talk of action is premature," says Julian, drawing the attention of the First Circuit to himself, "While recent events have been an undeniable disaster for the Blessed Order, I feel that blaming Victoria Davion for all our woes is misplacing the fault. While the First Prince certainly bears some share of the responsibility, I am more concerned about our own involvement. The Precentor ROM captured by a Successor Lord, all of our work to ignite a civil war in the League undone, a Star League library uncovered and seized by a Great House and now a ceasefire and peace talks between three of the Successor States. I wish to know how badly Vesar Kristofur mishandled ROM to allow all of this to occur and I want to make sure it is fixed before it leads to further crises on our hands."

"What are you suggesting, Primus?" asks Precentor Sian as she leans forward.

"The peace talks are unfortunate, but the truth of the matter is that they are unlikely to go anywhere," replies the Primus, "The Suns, the League and the Commonwealth will stop warring for a bit before old hatreds break out and the fighting resumes as talks break down. It may happen naturally on its own or we can inflame their grievances if the talks look like they are going somewhere. In the meantime, the Blessed Order is drawing too much attention to itself right now and ROM has been compromised to an unknown degree. For now we should keep our heads down and let things play out whilst we get our own affairs sorted out. Yes, the current crisis is concerning, but it will hardly be our undoing overnight."

"Julian is right," says Aliz, "I am far from pleased with what has happened, but a hasty and reckless response will only make matters worse. It is undeniable that something is wrong with ROM to allow things to get so out of control and sorting that out should be our first priority. Lest we find ourselves with another situation spiralling out of our control."

"As much as I would like to take action against Victoria Davion before she does something else, I also agree with the point that we should get our own house in order first," says Precentor New Avalon, "I shall keep a closer eye on the First Prince so she doesn't surprise us again. Hopefully, it will be easier now that she is a known factor."

"Right now, I am more concerned about the state of the League's economy," says the Primus, "We were supporting Anton Marik's ambitions to keep the Eagle from becoming too strong compared to our own C-Bill and now that won't be happening. Precentor Atreus, what options do we have to destabilise the economy of the Free Worlds League?"

"Financial manipulation using our control of the HPG network is the most obvious action, but I still recommend against doing that," answers Aliz, "We might get away with it, but the provinces physically comparing records with each other or bypassing us with JumpShip couriers would give the game away and draw undue attention to us. I would be against this under normal circumstances, but if we are going to expose the existence of our Tornado suits, I am especially against doing anything else that would get the Successor Lords looking at the Blessed Order."

"I concur with Precentor Atreus," says Jarlath, "I am only willing to risk drawing so much attention and investigation to our activities under normal circumstances. Under the current circumstances, I am still unaware of all of my predecessor's ongoing operations and I won't know what sort of shape that ROM is truly in until I've had time to sort through Kristofur's hands-on approach to ROM's activities."

"I am inclined to agree with your respective assessments of that course of action," says Julian, "I trust that you have another alternative in mind, Precentor Atreus?"

"Yes, I do, Primus," replies Aliz with a confident and borderline eager nod of his head, "Duchess Humphreys of Andurien is steadfast in her staunch refusal to aid the Captain-General or any other part of House Marik. Additionally, the Principality of Regulus, the current leader of the opposition is currently under substantial suspicion due to portions of its military deciding to side with Anton Marik against the Captain-General and its refusal to hand over those treasonous elements to Janos Marik. While they both present interesting opportunities to exploit on their own, there has been a recent and very intriguing development of Duchess Humphreys reaching out to Count Cameron-Jones yesterday regarding the possibility of the Duchy of Andurien and Principality of Regulus engaging in a joint succession from the League.

"Furthermore, the current Magestrix of Canopus, Kyalla Centrella, has a hatred of the Free Worlds League that is strong enough that she could be provoked or guided into taking action against it. An alliance between the Duchy of Andurien, the Principality of Regulus and the Magistracy of Canopus would be sufficient to see our plans for the League fulfilled with a score of 'Mech regiments between them. The only concern would be managing things so that their secession isn't successful as such an event would leave the Free Worlds League too weak to resist its neighbouring successor states."

"That sounds like an agreeable course of action," says Julian as the Primus of ComStar looks around the table, "Unless anyone has an objection, I would propose that we put it to a vote."

And so the First Circuit of ComStar votes to support an Andurien-Regulan secession from the Free Worlds League as an alternative way to weaken the Eagle and destabilise the League's economy.

A ComStar interlude and a bit of a timeskip between the first arc and the second arc. I was originally going to show the process step by step from Victoria's perspective, but then I realised it wasn't concise enough for the story I am trying to tell here.

So instead I chose to skip ahead to the next major point in the story and then cover things in, I think the term might be 'in medias res'. I'm not entirely sure if I am using the term right, I'm skipping ahead to actual talks between the Lyrans, Leaguers and Feddies whilst covering the intervening events in a 'these things have happened' sort of way. I figured showing ComStar's reaction to things would be a good way of showing this in addition to establishing what one of the antagonists is up to when Victoria would have no way of knowing herself what ComStar is planning.

Oh, I also butterflied the Marik Civil War away, which is going to have consequences.

Chapter Eight
Solaris City, Solaris VII
Federation of Skye, Lyran Commonwealth
7 May 3014

"So this is Solaris," says Tahmina as the APC takes her, Victoria and the platoon of Davion Guardsmen bodyguarding the First Prince to the hotel that will be their home for the duration of their stay on Solaris.

"Looking to get in a game?" asks Victoria with a smirk.

"Watching one or two, maybe," replies Tahmina as the smaller woman shrugs, "I don't think it would be professional of me to do so. I'm not special when it comes to being a MechWarrior and my ride belongs to AFFS. It would be one thing if my Shadow Hawk was my personal property, but I couldn't justify damaging government property for a personal reason."

"I could sign off on it you know, but I get your point," says Victoria, "I wonder how long these talks will take. Olivia says that preliminary talks have been going well, but there is a lot of bad blood between the Lyrans and Leaguers."

"Don't worry Vic," says Tahmina as she throws an arm around her prince, "If anyone can get them to sit down and listen to reason, it will be you. Morgan said that Katrina was extremely receptive."

"The Archon was open to allying with us back in thirty-ten," replies Victoria thoughtfully, "I guess there is no point in worrying about it now. I'll see where Janos and Katrina stand when I meet them."

A lot has changed since Victoria became the First Prince back at the start of March. It has been a couple of months now and if nothing else, her actions so far have ensured her place in history. The New Avalon Institute of Science is coming along nicely even if it is a couple of years away from completion while the newly formed Team Banzai is an unexpected boon. Not only is the team of geniuses very helpful to the work on understanding the Halstead Station library cache, but the regiment's worth of elite MechWarriors and ASFs pilots will be advantageous when it comes to New Avalon's defence, allowing Victoria to free up another unit from the capital's garrison.

And then her warning to Janos allowed the Captain-General to pre-emptively deal with his brother. Anton Marik and his closest supporters were arrested, his newly and secretly raised Ducal Guard were crushed on New Delos before the ball could get going whilst other units were purged of disloyal personnel. It wasn't perfect or completely painless, but it was certainly significantly better for the Free Worlds League than if Anton had been able to begin his revolt.

The downside is that the lack of a civil war meant that Katrina wasn't able to generously not raid the League to show her good intentions. Hopefully Janos will be suitably grateful for averting a costly civil war that would have weakened the League and undermined his reign. Especially since Anton would have had the Wolf's Dragoons fighting for him thanks to his dealings with Maximilian Liao.

At least Katrina is downright supportive of Victoria's push for peace. The First Prince wasn't expecting the Archon to be so positive about her proposal, but she will take her victories where she can get them, especially since this will be an uphill battle.

The journey through the Black Hills region of Solaris City doesn't take long to reach the hotel that has been rented out for Victoria and her delegation. The entire building has been hired by the Federated Suns for increased security, allowing her guards to go about their business without interfering with other guests and to ensure that no unknown individuals are able to get close to her in the guise of being fellow patrons of the hotel.

Olivia Fenlon is waiting for her, the Minister of Foreign Relations having arrived on Solaris almost a fortnight before the First Prince and about a week before the Archon and the Captain-General arrived. Since then, Olivia has been busy at work, using her diplomatic genius and ministerial position to start laying the groundwork. There have been no concrete deals without Victoria there to agree to them, but Olivia has been sounding out opinions and feeling out the willingness or lack of for certain things.

From the reports that Olivia has been forwarding to Victoria, her work has been going quite well. Beyond Katrina Steiner's odd optimism regarding the peace talks, Janos seems to be at least willing to humour the two of you, if only to keep the Lyrans off his back long enough to get some revenge against the Liaos.

That'll be the key to success, getting it signed so the Lyran Commonwealth can focus on the Draconis Combine and the Free Worlds League can focus on the Capellan Confederation. Then it will just be a matter of hoping that the ceasefire lasts long enough for it to become accepted.

Still a longshot, but one that Victoria is becoming more and more confident in.

"My Prince, it is good to finally have you here," says Olivia as Victoria and Tahmina get out of the APC, "I've been doing what I can, but something of this magnitude needs you personally speaking for the Federated Suns. There is only so much that a mere minister can promise."

"I understand," replies Victoria as the three of them and Victoria's Davion Guard escort enter the hotel, "Give me a run down of what to expect."

"As you are already aware, Katrina is surprisingly supportive of these peace talks and as far as I can tell, she wants them to succeed as much as you do," Olivia tells her, "From what I can gleam from her, she desires to gain some respite from the Succession Wars for her people and support against our mutual foe, the Draconis Combine. More cynically, the Lyran Commonwealth is running out of stamina after so many decades of war and the Archon wants to buy some space so it can catch its breath. Everyone is these days, but her predecessors had the LCAF running at full tilt for too long without any rest."

"So you are saying that Katrina wants to buy some time and breathing room for the LCAF to regroup and rearm?" inquires Victoria.

"It is certainly part of her motive though it would be wrong to claim that is all she wants," answers Olivia, "Another cynical part of her motivation is that the Lyran Commonwealth has the best economy in the Inner Sphere or any part of the Periphery. Getting a truce or even just a ceasefire benefits the Lyran Commonwealth as peace gives them the chance to leverage their superior economy. Or at least the Archon certainly thinks so from what I can gleam. She has enough faith in her people to believe that they can economically outcompete anyone else. My assessment of Katrina Steiner is that she wants an alliance with us against the Combine and she sees getting a ceasefire with the League as a way for her to secure one of her borders so that she can reassign forces to strengthen her other border."

"That fits with what I remember of her from when I visited Tharkad," says Victoria with a thoughtful look, "I'm glad to hear that she hasn't changed in the years since then."

"While Katrina has proven to be an unexpected source of help, there are concerns from the Lyran side of things," continues Olivia, "Her cousin Frederick Steiner holds ambitions for the throne like Anton Marik or Michael Hasek-Davion to the point that his political puppeteer had to restrain him from marching on Tharkad back when Katrina became Archon. He hasn't been speaking up against the peace talks yet, but if Frederick took an antagonistic stance, he would become a rallying point for those opposed to any alliance with us or agreement with the League."

"How likely is he do to that?" asks Tahmina.

"And could we talk him down from that?" adds Victoria.

"Given his apparently genuine desire to serve the Commonwealth and his service record against the Dracs, I believe he would be supportive of the alliance for the military benefits it would bring," answers Olivia, "Unfortunately, the concern is Aldo Lestrade, Duke of Summer and the unofficial leader of the growing Free Skye movement. While your plans would be to the benefit of the Federation of Skye and Free Skye's professed goals, I have been warned by reliable sources that Duke Lestrade doesn't truly care about Skye and only worries about his personal power. If he thinks that this will get in the way of his personal ambitions, he'll oppose it even if it supports his publicly proclaimed goals."

"Anything we can do to neutralise the threat?" asks Victoria, already suspecting what the answer will be as they reach Victoria's suite of rooms.

"Short of directly courting Frederick Steiner or discrediting Aldo Lestrade, there isn't much that we can do," replies Olivia with a slight shake of her head as the trio begins to get comfortable in Victoria's living room, "The former will be quite difficult as the man is currently stationed several jumps away along the Lyran-Draconis border. As for Lestrade, if he was so easily dealt with, the Archon would have already taken care of him. That isn't to say we can't do anything to fight his influence, but I believe that like the Archon, we are going to find Aldo Lestrade to be a persistent thorn in our side."

"Unfortunate, but at least we have the Archon on our side," says Victoria.

"We also have the official leader of the Federation of Skye in our camp," says Olivia, "It may be possible to get him to exert his official authority to shut down some of Lestrade's actions. In other news, Janos Marik has proven more receptive than I feared he would be. Not as supportive as Katrina is, but he is honouring the ceasefire and he is at least willing to give the peace talks a chance if nothing else."

"What can I expect from him and the League?" asks Victoria.

"Janos is going to be cynical and pragmatic when it comes to the peace talks," answers the Minister of Foreign Relations with a grim look on her face, "Whatever idealism he once had has been slowly burnt away since he became Captain-General and the betrayal from his brother got rid of whatever had still remained at that point. If you hadn't dropped all of this into his lap, I strongly suspect that Janos would have withdrawn into a shell, at least for a time."

"That unfortunately fits with what Loretta has been sharing with me over the years," says Victoria with an equally grim look, "Alright, Olivia, what do I have to work with when it comes to persuading the Captain-General to agree to my plans?"

"The threat of a strong Lyran Commonwealth and a desire to get revenge on the Capellan Confederation," Olivia tells her, "Between Katrina undoing her uncle's 'concentrated weakness' and Maximilian Liao's support for Anton Marik, Janos' agreement to the ceasefire and talks has become accepted as a move to keep the newly empowered Lyran threat at bay while the active Capellan threat is pushed back. Parliament has been spooked by how close the Liaos came to igniting a civil war within the League, something which would have devastated it whilst the Lyrans have recovered enough to be in a position to prey upon the League. It isn't universal, but there is a majority support for using the peace talks to stem the Commonwealth from attacking the League whilst the FWLM puts the Liaos in their place."

"So focus on convincing them by presenting peace with the Lyrans as means to attack the Cappies in peace," says Victoria, "Anything else?"

"You might want to emphasise that an alliance between the Lyran Commonwealth and Federated Suns is going to happen," replies Olivia, "I know it isn't set in stone, but I don't see you and Katrina not coming to an agreement. If you present that as happening to Janos and present it as a choice of being part of that or having to face it as a threat, then that should encourage him to play nice out of pragmatism."

"So tell Janos he has a choice of being inside the tent and pissing out or being outside the tent and being pissed on," muses Victoria and Olivia winces.

"I don't think you quite got that metaphor right and please don't be so vulgar," pleads Olivia, "There is a certain amount of decorum expected when it comes to negotiations with fellow heads of state."

"I know how to play nice," Victoria reassures her, "I accompanied Ian on his visit to Tharkad, remember?"

"So you mentioned," says Olivia, "So to recap, the Lyran side of things is effectively a done deal when it comes to military cooperation against the Draconis Combine and not attacking the League. Anything further with the League from the Lyran perspective will be more difficult. For the League, play up the chance to avoid getting attacked by the Commonwealth whilst they go after Capellans. Point out how even if they hate the Lyrans, they are better off being part of the alliance than being left out of it. Also remember that you need to play to parliament as much as you do Janos. Janos is very eager to make the Chancellor pay for turning his brother and son against him, but the provinces of the League are less personally invested in it."

"Those are some good starting points," says Victoria, "Better than what I hoped for mere months ago."

"Things are certainly looking more positive than they once were," agrees Olivia with a smile, "Even if it doesn't end the Succession Wars, some measure of peace within the Inner Sphere is worth struggling for. I'm certainly pleased that the Archon has proven wise enough to see the benefits of competing through matters of trade rather than the violence of war. There is one last thing that you should be aware of. Two things to be precise."

"What are they?" asks Victoria.

"Both the Archon and the Captain-General have requested prior meetings with you later today," says Olivia, "My understanding is that they wish to personally feel you out before the formal talks begin tomorrow though exactly what they wish to speak with you about is unknown to me."

"Do you think I should go?" asks Victoria after a moment of silent thinking, "That it won't look suspicious to have private meetings prior to the talks themselves?"

"Only if you agree to a private meeting with one and not the other," replies Olivia, "Go to both or go to neither and I would personally recommend meeting with them. You will find out what they want to discuss with you and you don't need to worry about them potentially feeling snubbed if you decline their request."

"Alright then, I'll go and speak with them," decides Victoria.

And here is the start of the second arc as we start off with a tentative truce and pending peace talks are in place. I choose Solaris over Terra as neutral ground because it offers more potential for trouble than the latter as the OOC reason and the IC reason is that using Terra would be too antagonistic to Janos due to the raw wounds from Anton and Max cutting their deal on Terra.

This update is mostly setting up the post-timeskip circumstances with the upcoming chapters covering the negotiations between the Lyrans, Leaguers and Feddies. I won't be covering every minute detail, but the basics and other important stuff will be shown on-screen provided it doesn't cut too much into the word count.

Please point out any spelling or grammar mistakes that you spot. Please quote them in the thread and explain what you think is wrong so I know what you are referring to.

Chapter Nine
Solaris City, Solaris VII
Federation of Skye, Lyran Commonwealth
7 May 3014

Victoria decides to meet with the Archon first. Katrina has been a friend and sort of ally for longer than Janos has and there are some things that Victoria would like to establish with the most reasonable party first before going to the less reasonable one. For starters, Victoria would like to get some sort of military cooperation against the Draconis Combine agreed to so she can threaten Janos with being left out of a military alliance between the Federation and the Commonwealth.

It was a bit of a decision to decide what to wear to the restaurant that Katrina has invited her to, where the Archon has reserved a private dining room for the two of them. On the one hand, it is traditional and accepted for a First Prince to wear a dress uniform in lieu of a suit or dress. On the other hand, a suitably formal dress is just as acceptable and all of Victoria's dresses are more comfortable than her dress uniform. That said, Victoria has to consider what sort of impression she wants to give off, which is something she needs to worry about now that she is First Prince.

In the end, Victoria decides that unlike with the High Council, her military record won't matter all that much here and chooses a pleasant red and gold dress that is patterned after the Davion sunburst. Hopefully it will come off as a way of showing her House's colours rather than looking ostentatious.

There are other guests at the restaurant, having their dinners as normal with the only sign of the Archon's presence and their pending meeting being the existence of on-duty Royal Guards in the building and outside. And while she cannot see them, Victoria would bet a hefty amount of C-Bills that there are some LIC agents mingled into the restaurant's patrons for the day.

Victoria draws a lot of attention as she enters the restaurant, some of it from her bodyguards, part of it from wearing a blatantly Davion dress in the Silesia region and the rest from being recognised as the First Prince. Thankfully the staff are appropriately professional and discreet for a place with such high profile clientele and Victoria is swiftly ushered into the private room that Katrina is in.

The Archon is just as Victoria expected her to be, a regal beauty that is the epitome of what a Steiner should look like with sharp facial features, steel grey eyes, long blond hair and a tall muscular frame. If Victoria didn't embody the Davion stereotype, she would be jealous of Katrina Steiner's looks and even then, Victoria would judge her Lyran counterpart to be the prettier of them,

Whereas the First Prince has chosen to wear a dress to lunch, Katrina has decided upon an insignia-less dress uniform of the LCAF with her medals out on display. While Victoria doesn't particularly care for it as she has already decided what she wants out of the Archon, the display of military prowess would be a good way to get on your average Feddie's good side.

"Katrina, it is good to see you again," says Victoria as she takes a seat at the table, "I just want to say that I am extremely grateful for your support. I am glad to see that you still support your old plan with Ian for an alliance."

"I am just doing what is best for my people, Victoria," replies Katrina as she gives the First Prince a small smile, "My congratulations on your coronation and my condolences on losing both of your brothers in such rapid succession. The Inner Sphere is a worse off place for their deaths."

"Thank you," says Victoria, "If you don't mind me cutting to the chase, as the First Prince of the Federated Suns, my goals is an alliance with the Lyran Commonwealth against the Draconis Combine and an alliance with the Free Worlds League against the Capellan Confederation. While I am not foolish enough to expect an alliance between the two given the bad blood between them, I would like to convince you to stop shooting each other. As for why I am supporting the Commonwealth and the League against the Dracs and Cappies, it isn't just because those two are my neighbours.

"While the Commonwealth, Federation and League all maintain some degree of rights and freedoms for their citizens, the Combine and Confederation are both states of oppression, tyranny and slavery. My apologies if I am getting ranty here, but I can see an Inner Sphere where the Federated Suns, the Lyran Commonwealth and the Free Worlds League exist in peace with each other. I don't see one where the Draconis Combine or the Capellan Confederation also exist, not without making radical changes that I cannot envision House Liao or House Kurita making."

"I can appreciate that," says Katrina, "I have no fondness for the Mariks, but as Archon, I cannot deny that the Kuritas are simply worse. While I do believe that a Lyran world being conquered by the League will result in a decrease in quality of living, I don't need to worry about them being brutalised like I do when the Combine conquers a world from the Commonwealth. If you can convince Janos to go along with it, I am willing to support a truce with the League even if an outright alliance is a bit too much right now. Not that I would personally be opposed, but as you said, there is too much bad blood between our people for such a thing."

"I am glad you see things that way," Victoria tells her, "I don't believe we have discussed this yet, but I believe that our realms would benefit more from trading and cooperating with each other. Speaking of which, you remember how you and Ian were interested in agreeing to some military cooperation against the Combine?"

"I certainly do," confirms Katrina, "I take it that you wish to discuss that now?"

"If it doesn't get in the way of what you wanted to talk to me about, I certainly do," answers Victoria, "I have a meeting with Janos later today, similar to this one, and I would like to come to some agreement for us to have some kind of military alliance against the Dracs. While there isn't any real urgency to it, I would like to be able to tell the Captain-General that the Federated Suns and Lyran Commonwealth have a military alliance and he can either get in on that or he can get left out."

"Hmm," says Katrina with a predatory grin that makes Victoria shiver, just a little, "I can certainly see how that could be considered a threat. Yes, regardless of what becomes of the League in this, I would like to see our realms united against our mutual foe."

***

The rest of the meeting went about as productively as it could have hoped to have been. Nothing was formalised in such a minor meeting, but the First Prince and the Archon agreed upon a few points to be discussed in detail later, all relating to joint cooperation against the Draconis Combine. Things such as sharing military technology, sharing spare parts for 'Mechs produced in their realms or potentially just outright swapping the 'Mechs, potential military officer exchanges and the possibility of sending trainers from the AFFS to train the next generation of officers for the LCAF.

All in all, Victoria is confident that if nothing else, then the Suns' future with the Lyrans is assured. It is with that happy mood that the First Prince goes to meet with the Captain-General.

While Katrina invited her to a restaurant, Janos has invited her to one of the local stables, a move that has Victoria's interest piqued. The stables of Solaris were BattleMech-associated and the structures themselves were 'Mech bays or glorified 'Mech bays, which meant that whatever Janos wanted had to be something to do with 'Mechs.

Perhaps continuing to wear the same dress as before is a mistake, but it is still clean and Victoria doesn't feel like going through the chore of picking something else suitable to wear. It shouldn't be a problem as regardless of what the destination is, Janos has only requested a meeting.

The stable is swarming with people, all wearing the colours of the Free Worlds League, but they let Victoria and her bodyguards from the 1st Davion Guards through without any difficulty or complaint. Inside the stable are more individuals from the League, including the old, but strong figure of Janos Marik, who looks away from the Highlander in the stable's 'Mech bay as the First Prince enters the building.

"First Prince Victoria," the Captain-General greets her, "Thank you for agreeing to meet with me and thank you for your warning about my brother's treachery. I fear that if I hadn't been able to preempt him, Anton would have caused untold devastation and damage to the League."

"I am glad I was able to help you and your people avoid such destruction," replies Victoria, "And you have my sympathy for learning what it is like when your last remaining sibling turns on you in the worst way possible."

"Yes, I have heard of Duke Hasek-Davion's treachery," replies Janos with a polite nod, "He was behind the assassin who struck you in the Davion Palace?"

"I cannot say that my brother-in-law was responsible for that, lest I bring about a destructive civil war for my people like the one that your own people have just narrowly avoided," replies Victoria.

"Of course," concedes Janos, "In any case, please accept this Highlander as a gift of gratitude. You've done a great deal for the League, more than enough to make up for the loss of this 'Mech. In fact, it is part of the equipment that my forces captured from my brother's Ducal Guards on New Delos. I hope you will find it to be a suitable upgrade for your Wolverine."

Well, Janos isn't wrong about it being an upgrade. While Victoria pilots the WVR-6M variant rather than the standard WVR-6R, the HGN-733 Highlander standing before her is a big boost in firepower and survivability at the price of speed. The Assault 'Mech can't move or jump as fast, but it is jump capable with the corresponding mobility. Meanwhile it has several additional tons of armour on top of a heavy autocannon instead of a medium autocannon, a second medium laser and the SRM-6 launcher is supplemented by a LRM-20 launcher.

And Janos is just giving it to her. A big part of Victoria wants to test it out, but the more sensible parts of her are fully aware that if she gets to use her Highlander in battle again, something has almost certainly gone wrong. As much as she hates to admit it, Victoria will primarily be using her new ride in simulated combat.

"Thank you, Captain-General Janos," says Victoria, "It is a great gift."

"I am glad that you appreciate it," replies the Captain-General, "Now, I know your subordinates have been speaking to both myself and my own and that we have corresponded via HPG, but I would like to hear in person why you are pushing for this?"

"Because I can see our nations being at peace while I cannot see us being at peace with the Capellan Confederation or the Draconis Combine," answers Victoria, "The Federated Suns, the Lyran Commonwealth and the Free Worlds League may have our disagreements with each other, but we all maintain some degree of liberty and rights for our people. The Combine and Confederation are both oppressive and slaving tyrannies with the Combine being built upon a desire to conquer the entire Inner Sphere. As for the Confederation, House Liao might have been decent once upon a time, but these days, you cannot trust them not to slide a knife into your back, something that I am sure you are fully aware of."

"You really believe that you could bring about a peaceful end to the Succession Wars?" asks Janos sceptically.

"I think I might have a shot at it and I won't know if I don't try," replies Victoria, "Sometimes you just need to take a calculated risk and that's what I am doing here. I freely admit that I may be gambling on a longshot here, but I feel the potential benefits are worth the potential risks. So far I have been proven right as while the exact details have yet to be determined, the Archon has agreed to a military alliance between the Suns and the Commonwealth."

"She has?" demands Janos sharply.

"Ian began the groundwork for it back in thirty-ten," explains Victoria with a sympathetic look, "I just took it to the next step after finally speaking with Katrina in person at lunch today. So whatever the outcome of these peace talks, I am looking at walking away with that military alliance. For what is worth, the work on this began before my time as First Prince and if either of my brothers had lived, I would expect that military alliance to have come about by thirty-twenty at the latest."

"Thank you for sharing that with me before tomorrow," says Janos, "I'm sure you appreciate how that changes things."

"I do," says Victoria as she makes sure to make eye contact with the Captain-General, "I may be allying with the Lyrans, but I don't want this to be the Commonwealth and the Suns against the League. I want this to be the Suns, the Commonwealth and the League against the Combine and Confederation. Or at least the Suns and Commonwealth against the Combine alongside the Suns and League against the Confederation."

"I understand your position," says Janos, "I can promise you that I will at least listen to what you and Katrina Steiner have to say."

"That is all I ask of you right now," replies the First Prince.

Here we have the start of the on-screen diplomacy. The Lyran/Feddie alliance is going off to an early start while Janos tries to get on Victoria's good side by gifting her with a new 'Mech and a pretty good one to boot

I've also been trying to be more descriptive in my writing so I don't have chapters full of dialogue with nothing describing the scene or what is going on.

Chapter Ten
Solaris City, Solaris VII
Federation of Skye, Lyran Commonwealth

The peace talks take place at the Solaris Hilton, the best hotel in the neutral part of the city. A couple of other places could compete with the Solaris Hilton for the title of being the premier hotel on Solaris, but neither of them are located on neutral ground and therefore unsuitable for the peace talks.

While only three Successor States are involved in the peace talks, there are four different parties at the round table where the participants have gathered. Captain-General Janos Marik and the delegation from the League, Archon Katrina Steiner and the delegation from the Commonwealth, First Prince Victoria Davion and the delegation from the Suns and finally, Julian Tiepolo, Primus of ComStar and the neutral arbitrator of the peace talks.

The talks are taking place in a conference room that is guarded by a mixture of the 1st Royal Guards, the 1st Davion Guards and the 1st Free Worlds Guards. Their assigned duties mean protecting from assassins and spies, the latter of which has extended to include the media. While all three states involved support some measure of free speech, the peace talks will be difficult enough without adding the need to play to the public on top of that.

"Now that we are all gathered here, I propose that we begin," says Primus Tiepolo, "As First Prince Davion has been the driving factor behind these talks, I also propose that she be allowed to speak first unless there are any objections."

"I have none," says the Archon.

"Neither do I," adds the Captain-General.

"In that case, I would like to state that I am willing to provide a mostly complete copy of the Halstead Station library to both the Lyran Commonwealth and the Free Worlds League if they agree to five year truce," says Victoria, ignoring the shocked gasps that her words bring about, "While I will be keeping the more sensitive and strategically vital portions of it for the Federated Suns alone, I am willing to share most of it as a gesture of goodwill and proof that I am serious about this. I even brought said copies with me in the hope of coming to such an agreement. As for the time limit of the truce, I am not foolish enough to believe in an indefinite peace right now so I will settle for a temporary truce and then see where we stand in a few years."

"That is a very generous offer," says Katrina as she leans forward, looking between Victoria and Janos, "If the Captain-General is willing, I would happily accept it."

"I am also open to your offer, First Prince Victoria, but for the sake of being responsible, I would like to verify the data first," says Janos, glancing at Katrina for a moment before refocusing on Victoria, "As you say you have brought the copies with you, I would like to request that I have a trusted subordinate look at said copy to see if it is truly what you claim it to be."

"Of course, I am not offended by you making sure that you aren't being tricked," replies Victoria to the Captain-General before turning to the Archon, "I would be happy to accept someone of your choosing coming to look at your copy to verify it."

"While I trust you to be truthful, I will take you up on that," replies Katrina, "Not because I feel you may be deceiving me, but because checking will help satisfy the concerns of the naysayers and sceptics."

"Excellent," says Victoria, "You can contact my staff and arrange the visitation. While the truce will need to wait until you have verified my offer, I would like to continue these negotiations with the assumption that it is genuine and the truce will be signed."

"I would be happy to do so," says Katrina, "As I said, I trust your offer to be authentic."

"I am likewise happy," agrees Janos, "While I do need to check, I have no real expectation of being deceived."

"In that case, I would like to raise the issue of military cooperation," says Victoria, "While I don't expect the League and the Commonwealth to engage in military cooperation nor do I expect us to come to an agreement today, I do hold hopes that the AFFS will be able to work with the LCAF against the DCMS and the FWLM against the CCAF."

***

As the first day of talks comes to an end, Victoria feels both that they went well and that she is thoroughly exhausted. Spending the better part of a day in game-changing negotiations has been an entirely new experience for the First Prince and it has been extremely tiring to the point that upon returning to her hotel room, the woman threw herself face down on her bed.

"Tired out?" asks Tahmina as she walks into the room, Victoria's bodyguards having become accustomed to her presence.

"I don't think I've been more exhausted in my life," answers Victoria without looking up from where she is sprawled out across her bed, "Only boot camp comes close to competing."

"Have things really been that bad?" asks Tahmina nervously, "I thought they went pretty well."

"Oh, they did," Victoria reassures her, "I made as much progress as I dared hope, but I am exhausted by it all."

And they certainly made progress today. While neither the FWLM nor the LCAF were willing to work together, the Archon and the Captain-General were willing to accept mutual cooperation with the AFFS and the three Successor Lords even sorted out the basics of a plan. Said plan consisted of the League and Suns launching a strike against the Cappies that the CCAF would be unable to properly resist and then once the Confederation had been dealt a crippling strike, the Commonwealth and Suns would focus on the Combine.

Said strike would take place in 3015, both to give time to get the forces into position and to wait out the remainder of the Wolf's Dragoons' contract with House Liao. While the exact targets had yet to be determined, invasions would form the bulk of it and the list of potential targets would be the Capellan military industry located on their borders, which included all of them with the exceptions of Capellan, Sarna and arguably Nanking.

The downsides of said plan is that the Capellans would have enough forewarning that they could muster up enough forces to put up a decent defence ahead of time and for the Federated Suns, they would have to worry about raids or even invasions from the Combine. Ultimately, it wasn't that much of a concern as the Suns could handle the damage done by the DCMS and in one of her most cynical decisions to date, Victoria is willing to endure such damage as an acceptable price for crippling the Confederation. After all, with the Cappies out of the big picture for the foreseeable future, she could just devote the majority of the AFFS to the Combine border while Katrina did the same with the LCAF.

It wouldn't be so easy to cripple the Dracs like it would be with the Cappies, but with a competent Archon in charge, Victoria is confident that plenty of worlds lost to the Dragon could be reclaimed.

Now she just needs to get the truce formally in place, spend a few more days hammering out the details of the military cooperation and then spend an even longer amount of time sorting out trade and other civilian stuff. If things continue to go as they have been, Victoria should walk away with an uneasy truce between the Lyrans and Leaguers whilst having separate military alliances with both.

Hopefully she can unload some of the work to her subordinates, but with the Archon and Captain-General in attendance, Victoria doesn't think things will be that easy.

"Want me to order some room service for you?" asks Tahmina after a few moments of silence, "I assume from how you are just lying there, you aren't in the mood to go out for dinner."

"Food that comes to me sounds good," answers Victoria as she rolls over to look at her friend, "Anything happened whilst I was busy?"

"Duke Sandoval reports that the Third Davion Guards are raiding Proserpina and while the raid isn't concluded yet, the latest reports have been quite positive so far," replies Tahmina, "Also the Ministry of Education reports that there has been a disaster with one of the Vagabond Schools."

"Damn it, how bad?" asks Victoria as she sits up due to the apparent seriousness of the situation.

"The investigation into what happened and why is still ongoing, but the Kennedy has vanished with everyone onboard," answers Tahmina, "It jumped, but never arrived at its destination. As for what happened to the JumpShip, I don't know as the investigation is still ongoing."

"That is a disaster," says Victoria as she puts her face in her hands, "Okay, I don't know how badly this will impact the reputation and effectiveness of the Vagabond Schools or if it is the first of many incidents, but I want Minister Patel to start looking into alternatives and safer measures of education for the Outback. Perhaps something local or at least planet-based. Maybe boarding schools on select worlds?"

"I'll write up a message for the Minister of Education," says Tahmina, "Now, do you want me to fetch you a menu for dinner, Vicky?"

"That would be great, Tahmina," replies Victoria as she gives her best friend a grateful look, "You're the best."

Solaris City, Solaris VII
Federation of Skye, Lyran Commonwealth
10 May 3014

When the talks got called off for the afternoon so that the parties involved could review some of their own information before resuming the talks the following morning, Victoria decided it would be a good time to blow off some steam. And what better way to relax and reduce her stress levels than to take her new 'Mech for a ride?

So with a pair of 'Mechs from the 1st Davion Guards and Tahmina in her Shadow Hawk as a set of bodyguards, Victoria was stomping her new Highlander through the streets of Solaris when the attacks began.

"Report!" orders Victoria as the First Prince hears the sounds of fighting in the distance.

"Unknown, my Prince," comes the swift response, "We are investigating the source of it now."

Frustrating, but a lack of instantly available information is just an unfortunate aspect of life. Nonetheless, Victoria begins to move towards the fighting as whatever is going on, she doesn't want it ruining the peace talks and a Highlander is a safe enough place for a MechWarrior of Victoria's calibre.

"Victoria!" calls a voice over a private channel and Victoria instantly recognises it as belonging to her old friend Loretta Milano, one of Janos' trusted advisors and a key player in arranging the peace talks, "Are you there?"

"I am here," replies Victoria, "Do you know what is going on?"

"Death Commandos are attacking the Captain-General," answers Loretta, sounding semi-panicked, "The Free Worlds Guards are holding for now, but are you able to send assistance?"

"I am already heading towards the fighting with my Highlander and the rest of my lance," replies Victoria.
"That swiftly?" exclaims Loretta.

"I decided to take my new ride out for a spin to destress," explains Victoria, "I'll see you soon!"

As the call ends, Victoria decides that time is of the essence and she ignites her jump jets, intending to hop across the rooftops to avoid the crowded streets. Her 'Mech should be able to identify which ones are capable of supporting her weight and if she guesses wrong, then her Highlander is built to take rough landings.

"Victoria, what are you doing?" demands Tahmina as she begins to follow Victoria in her Shadow Hawk.

"You heard Loretta, Tahmina," replies the First Prince, "The Death Commandos are attacking the Marik delegation and I'm not going to hang our allies out to dry."

It doesn't take that long to cross the city, but each second feels painfully long, especially after the sounds of fighting get increasingly louder. It doesn't help matters that once Victoria is approaching the battle between the Death Commandos and the 1st Free Worlds Guards, another battle apparently breaks out in the Silesia region.

Despite being the first to move, Victoria isn't the first to make contact with the Death Commandos as one of her bodyguards in their speedier Quickdraw is the first to gain line of sight with the Capellans. Yet the mid-ranged weapons of the QKD-5A mean that of the Davion reinforcements, Victoria is still the first to strike the enemy as she unloads her LRM/20 into a black-clad Thunderbolt.

A full half of her missiles miss, but the remainder pepper the Capellan 'Mech with holes in its armour plating. Victoria follows it up by jumping on top of a nearby building to get a proper angle on the lance of Death Commandos.

The Cappies have brought a Crusader, a Centurion, a Spider and the Thunderbolt she took a shot at to the field. Meanwhile the Leaguers have a pair of Ostrocs and a Shadow Hawk in the field with a couple of Bug 'Mechs on the ground. Victoria snaps a shot with her heavy autocannon into the rear of the enemy Centurion, her autocannon shell ripping into the weaker rear armour before the Capellan pilot can react to her presence.

Her attack is more effective than she expected as not only does Victoria busts open the rear torso armour, but the Centurion's remaining autocannon ammo is ignited as the right torso explodes into flames and shrapnel. As the autocannon-equipped arm of the hostile 'Mech goes flying, Victoria fires a volley of LRMs into the wounded Centurion the moment that her LRM launcher finishes recycling.

And then as her Quickdraw bodyguard and the Leaguer Shadow Hawk pounce upon the damaged Centurion, the Death Commandos switch targets. While the Thunderbolt continues to duel with the Ostrocs, the Crusader and the Spider both shift their attention to Victoria as they jump towards her.

Having her back as always, Tahmina leaps into the way of the Spider, distracting the Death Commando with a full Alpha Strike, leaving Victoria to handle the Crusader. Its jumping capabilities are explained away by her battle computer having identified the 'Mech as the CRD-3L variant, which means that the Crusader has a reduced number of missiles compared to the standard version.

As the Crusader opens fire upon reaching the range where both its LRMs and SRMs are in optimal firing distance, Victoria ignites her jump jets to put some distance between her and the other Capellan 'Mechs. Between her new Highlander and Tahmina, Victoria is confident in her ability to take the Crusader and the Spider. The Leaguers and her bodyguard can handle slaying the Thunderbolt and dealing a death blow to the Centurion.

Missiles splatter across the frontal armour of Victoria's Highlander while a laser sears some of its armour with a glancing blow. Victoria unloads her own weapons into the Capellan 'Mech, but the Death Commando is a skilled and nimble pilot, who jumps just at the right movement to avoid the majority of her shots, including her autocannon.

"Tahmina, handle that Spider," orders Victoria over the radio as she jumps behind a building, "I'll take care of this Crusader."

"Understood, Vicky," replies Tahmina as Victoria watches the sensor contact of the enemy Crusader run around the building she is behind.

Just as her opponent is about to come around the corner, Victoria ignites her jump jets so that when the Crusader comes around to lay into her, it finds itself facing ninety tons of descending metal. To the credit of the Death Commando, they attempt to dodge backwards and even fire one last volley of SRMs at her, but it is too little too late. The feet of the First Prince's Highlander come down hard on the Liao Crusader, one denting its chest armour hard, but the other foot slams into the cockpit, caving it in under its weight.

Having slain her foe, Victoria lets out a victory whoop in the privacy of her cockpit and then lets out a second one as she realises that she has just performed her first 'Highlander burial'. The momentary celebration lasts for just that, a moment, before Victoria gets her head back into the game. Seeing that Tahmina is still duelling the Spider, Victoria decides to lend her best friend a hand especially since it doesn't look like her friend is winning.

Armed with a PPC and an LRM/5 in her SHD-2K, Tahmina is attempting to put some distance between her and the Death Commando, but the Spider is leveraging its superior speed and jumping ability to keep Tahmina off-foot. Whittling away at Tahmina's Shadow Hawk with its medium lasers, it isn't a fast strategy, but it is an effective one.

Using her feet rather than her jump jets to let her heat go down a bit, Victoria unleashes an indirect barrage of LRMs at the Spider. Less than a quarter of them actually hit between the Death Commando's piloting skill and the speed at which they are moving, but it is enough to let the Capellan know there is another player in the game now.

Then again, perhaps that wasn't the best move as the Spider seems to take it as a sign to withdraw. By the time that Victoria is coming around the corner, the Death Commando is already jumping away from both her and Tahmina. Tahmina opens fire on its fleeing form, blasting off an arm with her PPC, but by the time that Victoria's Highlander is ready for another LRM volley, the Spider is already out of sight.

"First Prince Victoria," calls someone over the comms, "We are receiving reports that the Archon is under attack and there are mixed reports on who is responsible."

"Understood," says Victoria as she takes a moment to analyse the current situation.

The Crusader and Centurion are both down, the Thunderbolt is about to die while the Spider is fleeing too fast for Victoria to pursue. Her Highlander has taken damage across the board, but the vast majority of her armour is still there. Just as she can't afford to let anything happen to the Captain-General, Victoria cannot afford to let anything bad befall the Archon.

"Tahmina," says Victoria as she gets moving once again, "We're going to help the Steiners now."

"Of course, we are," comes the reply as her best friend follows her as always.

Halfway into the NaNoWriMo word count and we have our first Mech fight of the story. For the Solaris arc, I'm going to cover the attack on the Steiners and then I'll probably time-skip again to the next plot, mainly because the key parts of the negotiations are done and I don't want to drag out this arc too long as I have a couple more that I want to get done before the story is over and they aren't going to be short arcs.

Please point out any spelling or grammar mistakes that you spot. Please quote them in the thread and explain what you think is wrong so I know what you are referring to.
