[X][Name] Aurelia
[X][Heritage] Stonemason
[X][Born] Possessed
The girl is born in a lonely mountainside cabin and given the name of a dead king. The birth of a girl is a disappointment. A farmer's daughter can help with the harvest or feed the animals, but a girl can't be expected to carve stone.
Worse, the baby never cries. When put in enough discomfort she will eventually begin screaming, but she never begs to be fed or held like other babies do. It's soon apparent that something is very wrong with her. A spirit has invaded the tiny body. The parents try beating her with thin tree branches until she bleeds and dunking her into ice cold water, but the spirit refuses to leave.
The girl is taken to the village priests, but the ancestor spirits are of no help. One makes a show of straining as if trying to lift something very heavy and eventually gives up. The girl's father gathers a handful of coppers and goes down the big road to see a hag who's said to be able to command spirits and demons. The hag comes to see the girl, spits on the floor, and refuses to have anything to do with her. She doesn't give back the money.
And so Aurelia lives on with two souls inside her. The soul of an ordinary girl is responsible for daily tasks that keep the body fed and out of trouble. But whenever she falters she finds another presence behind her, as solid as the mountain itself. She learns to imitate the other spirit, becoming as cold and as hard as a stone herself.
Traits Gained:
Cold - Aurelia's face sometimes seems to be made of stone. She rarely displays emotions.
Stubborn - Once Aurelia's mind is made up, shifting her opinion is akin to shifting a massive boulder.
As Aurelia grows up, the spirit pushes her to do many strange things. She always walks barefoot so that her body is always touching the ground directly. She gathers small stones until she's collected a sample of every single mineral found within the mountain. She walks fearlessly into places where her father doesn't dare to tread and the living boulders, trolls, and cobolds all ignore her. And when she reaches the age of ten, the spirit guides her to crawl through a tunnel, narrow, winding, and long, until she reaches the secret heart of the mountain. And there the spirit tells her its names. First, the name humans gave it: Big Goat Peak, the highest mountain in the region. And then its name in the language of mountains and stones, the one that sounds like loose gravel and shifting boulders. And then its true name, the first word of
Language Aurelia ever hears. And from then on she is already half a witch.
But before she can become the real thing, she has a lot of growing to do. So Aurelia...
