[X] Enetious
"Assassin? Yes, that would make sense. My master saw something intrude into her territory, but said she could not make it out. shall we hunt together, then, that our goals are the same?"
You shrug, "Sure, why not? Worked well enough the last two times we went hunting together," you say, seeing no reason to turn down the offered help; and with you being the intruder in this territory, working with Lancer is better than being told to leave by Lancer. "Have any good leads you want to share?"
"I am afraid not. My master was only able to detect static in this rough area, but any more than that was beyond her."
You try to suppress the urge to say something. To say that the precognition her master uses to try and find where Assassin will be next is the same precognition that made her decide wholesale slaughter of almost two-dozen innocent girls was the best way to go about 'saving the world'. That no matter how hard her master tries to erase what she has done, no amount of good deeds will ever take back the willful staining of her hands with so much blood. You try; but you cannot.
"Back then, what made you go along with Mikuni's plans? You seem reasonable enough-" at least when she's not flying off the handle with battle-mania "-so why did you go along with Mikuni's unreasonable plan to kill so many innocent girls? Did she use a Command Seal to make you comply?"
"Is that not what we as servants are meant to do? To do as our masters command us?" Lancer looks at you, her face a mask whose composition you cannot quite describe. "My master outlined her plan in exacting detail to me; that we would take the lives of the lesser puella magi, to spare them from becoming witches, to stockpile their magical energy for use against Walpurgisnacht, and to distract the Incubator so that it would be too busy to contract with Kaname Madoka."
"That was her plan and I, who had no knowledge of the puella magi system before my summoning, had nothing to contribute that might have changed her mind."
"So you just... Went along with it, because that's what you believed had to be done."
"I am a Valkyrie; it is not my place to decide who dies on the battlefield," she says, even though you know better than that. Once, she did decide who would live, and was punished for it by her father Odin. That was what led to Sigurd rescuing her, and in doing so claimed her heart. Either she has learned her lesson from her previous disobedience, or is acting as such to avoid the risk of meeting Sigurd again.
But there was something else that sticks out to you about Lancer's response. Like Caster, Lancer is precise with her use of words, and so her use of the word 'summoned' rather than 'appeared' sticks out to you. "Just a few moments ago, you said that Mikuni 'summoned' you. I was under the impression that the servants of this War had all just appeared, for lack of a better word. So, did Mikuni actually summon you in the proper way?"
"I have no reason to doubt that she did. There was an evocation circle on the floor where I appeared, and I later watched as Mistress Kure was guided through the ritual to summon Berserker."
Lancer's response has caught you off-guard; there shouldn't have been any way for Mikuni to know of the proper ritual for summoning a servant. Unless McRemitz was right, and there actually is mage blood in her family. If that's the case, then what would a girl who was already a mage look like if she were to become a puella magi? She certainly has the affluence to match some of the more storied mage families of the Clocktower, and according to your master she has reserves of magical energy that shouldn't be possible for a normal puella magi; so is there a chance that Mikuni might indeed come from a family of mages?
There's only one way to get to the bottom of this. "Is there anything else you've seen in Mikuni's mansion during your time there? Anything that stands out to you as the property of a mage? Mystic tomes; old Formalcraft circles; maybe the decrepit frame of a Bounded Field that existed prior to the runic one she has up now? Anything like that?"
Lancer shakes her head, saying "No, nowhere in my master's mansion have I seen anything which resembles the trappings of a mage. That she summoned me the proper way, simply is, I believe."
Perhaps she just hasn't been looking in the right places? you think to yourself, before scratching that notion. At their home, Lancer seems to act in the role of a servant in more ways than one; you're doubtful she would have missed something unless she were being truly careless. You'll either have to put the matter to rest that Mikuni isn't a mage, or you'll have to investigate for yourself later on.
But for now, you'll lay the matter to rest, and decide to change the topic of conversation by asking "So, what are your thoughts about everything that's happening lately?"
"The lack of a master to summon the missing Saber servant worries me. Already, this improper War has gone on for a month, and yet the seventh master is still nowhere to be seen. When they appear, if they do, I fear that they will either be our enemy, as Assassin and the many coming witches are, or they will arrive too late to be successfully integrated into the team our masters have built. My thoughts are the same for the Saber servant themselves. Who will they be; will they be friend, or foe?"
"Hopefully the former," you say, thinking of all the way in which the Saber servant could wind up poorly for your master and her allies. "Our masters have a fairly strong compliment of servants, but Sabers are considered the strongest class for a reason, and the wrong servant could easily tear us all to shreds if we let them."
A servant with the invulnerability to stand up to Gilgamesh's Enûma Eliš; the divinity and swiftness to harm Achilles; the skill of sword to cut down Lancelot; the strength to crumple the defenses of Brynhildr which even your strongest blades had difficulty with; and a mind to steel to defeat you inside Unlimited Blade Works. A Saber like that, if they were your enemy, would likely be an even more daunting foe to fight that whatever is to come on Walpurgisnacht.
"Well, right now it's looking like there won't even be a Saber, so hopefully that's not something we have to worry about." Neither you nor Lancer need to dwell on the risk of a dangerous Saber being summoned, not when you're in the middle of hunting Assassin, so again you change the topic, Tracing a small, nondescript sword into your grasp. "I've been following along with my master in trying to learn runes. I went with Tiwaz because it has the most synergy with what I'm already capable of, and I was wondering if you had any pointers you could give to me."
Lancer motions for you to hand her the blade, which you do, and she brings it to level with her eyes. "Your work is not inexperienced, Archer. Tell me, have you had prior training before?"
"A little bit. In life, I studied at the Clocktower as a student for a few years, but outside of things relating to swords there's little I could ever do. Tiwaz just happens to have applications that I can actually use."
"It shows. You use the rune as though you were-" Sigurd, you know she wants to say "-a warrior." Well, she would know.
It dawns on you, as you talk with Lancer, that you still haven't yet found the entrance to Assassin's labyrinth. You know you've been looking, but that little goblin still won't show herself. So, what's the best way to approach this?
