Day 21 Chapter 2
[X] Enetious

<Please, you've got to help me find her!>

Mikuni Oriko has disappeared?
It doesn't make any sense to you. Why would she choose now, of all times, to disappear? You quickly run through possible reasons for her disappearance in your head.

At first, you think that she simply skipped town in fear for her life, for one reason or another. Perhaps she saw something with her precognition that made her change her mind about staying in Mitakihara to fight, or her efforts to exterminate the local puella magi population didn't quite go as planned and she had to skip town to avoid someone with an even larger grudge against her than yourself.

But as soon as the idea crosses your mind, you discard it. Mikuni Oriko may be many things, many of them bad, but you do not doubt for a second that the love and care she shows to Kure Kirika is genuine. If Mikuni Oriko had skipped town, you're sure she would have brought Kure Kirika with her, and not left her a frantic and scared mess in the middle of the night.

Unfortunately, all the other options you come up with are no better for her. If she decided to go out hunting again later in the night, it's entirely possible that a witch, or Assassin, or something else lurking in the dark places of the city that you haven't yet encountered, has killed her. Or, even if they didn't kill her directly, the fight could have forced her to take on so much corruption that she became a witch. Or, if you assume that her outburst last night was her own emotion and not the weight of her accumulated corruption, she could have simply had enough and taken her own life.

As you consider the possibility of each option, you can hear on the other end of the line that Kure Kirika is grown ever more frantic, her desperation mounting as the seconds pass and she waits to hear your reply. Finally, the dam breaks. <I know we don't really get along, but you're the only person I can even ask for help! I'm using Oriko's phone right now, and you're the only other number she has. Please, I'm begging you, you have to help me! I'll do anything!>

"The situation isn't looking so good," you say at last. "I've tried to think of reasons why she might have disappeared, but none of them bode well. I can try to get in touch with her telepathically, and I can send the word out to Tomoe-san to bring Caster in on the hunt, but I'm afraid that my own abilities won't be of much help to you in searching for her, assuming she is even still with us."

<Don't say that! Oriko can't die, not without me! She's alive, I know she is! She's got to be... I can't- I can't live without her.>

And to think, you were just starting to feel something other than hatred for Mikuni Oriko...
"Alright, I'll see what I can do." ... "Mikuni Oriko, are you there?" Silence. "I repeat, are you there? Kure Kirika is worried about your disappearance." Still silence. On a last, desperate attempt, on the off chance that she's either asleep or unconscious somewhere that isn't her mansion, you try sending one last message. It contains no words, sounding off only to the loudest cacophony your mind can muster. The roar of storm winds, the chorus of gunfire and explosions, and the crash of buildings collapsing around you.

You send the sounds that you hear every time you fight Walpurgisnacht.

And still, there is silence. You have no choice but to inform Kure Kirika. "I'm sorry," you say. "But I'm not getting any response from her. I can send Archer out to search the city, and I can tell Tomoe-san to ask Caster for aid, but there's nothing else I can realistically do."

You hear only two words from Kure Kirika as she hangs up on you, a tearful, choked <Thank you.> And then silence. You sigh, setting your phone down as Archer enters the living room.

"It's a little early to be chatting with your friends, isn't it?" he asks, taking a seat beside you. "I take it that something bad is happening?"

"That was Kure Kirika. Mikuni Oriko has gone missing."

"What the fuck is wrong with me; why did I do that?"

Because you're secretly a super-good guy and you couldn't stand by and let some idiot child get hurt while there was something you could do to save them.

Your name is Emiya Shirou, and right now, as you stand atop a skyscraper overlooking the city, that's the only thing that you can say. Against your better judgement - indeed, against every drop of mana that comprises your body screaming at you to leave that girl to whatever fate she had wandered into - you had, in the end, followed your master's order when she sent you out to look for Mikuni Oriko.

"That was Kure Kirika. Mikuni Oriko has gone missing."

You cross your arms over your chest as your master gives her report. "Good. Maybe this will teach Kure to be more independent."

Clearly, your master didn't appreciate your response. "Archer, this is a serious matter."

"I know. I'm taking it as seriously as it deserves. Those two are in a distressingly unhealthy relationship and are practically joined at the hip. In fact, if what you said about them having found a way to transfer mana is true, it wouldn't surprise me if that statement was a bit more literal."

Your master eyes you suspiciously, and asks "What does that mean?"

"It means that Kure could stand-" you snicker to yourself as you realize the pun you've just made "-to learn how to live without her babysitter for a few hours. It might be good for her."

"Archer, when I say that Mikuni Oriko has gone missing, I don't just mean that she's packed her bags on gone on holiday without telling anyone. I mean that she is missing. M-I-A." Your master sounds more distressed about Mikuni's vanishing than you would have expected, given everything you know about their history. "One of my allies - one of the people that I need in order to keep this city safe, to stand a chance of beating Walpurgisnacht - has gone missing, and all attempts at contacting her have turned up silent."

If it were solely up to your own discretion, you would have had no qualms about leaving Mikuni to her fate. But this isn't just about you. Your master needs Mikuni in order to keep this city safe, in order to keep Kaname Madoka safe. As much as you want to leave her, you can't, not without risking the integrity of your own mission in the process.

"Archer, I've just finished speaking with Tomoe-san. According to Caster, Mikuni Oriko is to the northwest, inside a labyrinth. I've instructed Kure Kirika to have Lancer link up with you before you enter."

"She's inside a labyrinth? Then that just means she's taking her sweet time in killing the witch, right?"

"We have no idea how long she's been inside, and if the labyrinth closed behind her we'd have no way of contacting her from the outside. Kure Kirika informed me that when she awoke at four-thirty, Mikuni Oriko had already been gone for some time. Maybe she's taking her time, or maybe the witch has captured her. Or maybe it's the labyrinth of her own witch."

A Lancer servant shouldn't be capable of Independent Action; if Mikuni had fallen in battle, Lancer should have vanished, but she hasn't. But you don't know what happens to a servant if their master becomes a witch, do you?

-[X] Meet up with Kirika and Lancer on-site and try and search for the Labyrinth your Master said Oriko is in. If necessary, pull off that trick with Gae Dearg you used against Assassin's sealed off Labyrinth in order to gain entry. Go in, find Oriko, and extract her if at all possible, and be sure to iterate to Kirika and Lancer that their main priority is extracting Oriko, and that they shouldn't engage the Witch if they don't have too.
--[X] If things go awry and you think you and your allies need it, request that your Master time-stop and lend them aid.
--[X] If Oriko appears to be the Witch, retreat and inform your Master of the problem so that they can regroup with everyone and make a plan.

You know, I really hope this is just a regular Witch that captured Oriko and she isn't trapped in, say, Assassin's Labyrinth. Also I assume Archer will be spammed with all of the backed up Alaya messages at some point during this? And random question, but can a single Puella Magi safely be contracted with 2 Servants?

EDIT: Added the usual 'time-stop if in trouble' bit.

Archer will get what was sent to him, yes.

It would depend on the puella magi, how much mana and Grief Seeds they have; and the servant, how powerful they are, and how much mana it costs to keep them fielded and in top form. It can be done given the right circumstances, but at the same time, there's a reason you don't normally see a single master with more than one servant if they aren't hooked up to the Grail.

Gotcha. All according to keikaku :drevil:.

EDIT: wait, @Enetious Is there a reason that homura or anyone else can't come as well?

At the time Homura was expecting for Archer to have to scour the city for Oriko, so she went to school. She presumably already left for school when she got a reply from Mami after Mami convinced Caster to look for Oriko, and nothing's stopping Archer from requesting assistance in the form of a time-stop if things get shaky (and given that, I'll specify it in the vote).

Gotcha. All according to keikaku :drevil:.
And just what are you planning? Hoping to stick Lancer with another Master if Oriko bites it? Got still another master lined up for when we inevitably need to replace Kirika if Oriko bites it? Hoping to stick Assassin with a stable master/positive influence?

Well, the first two are things we'd have to come up with if such things occur, but weren't what I was referring to. The latter is close, yet so far off from what I've got planned, though it won't come to fruition until Assassin is good and dead (or at least otherwise incapacitated) ;).

Okay, now I'm confused. I hope you're not hoping that you can roll the gacha and get a new Assassin once Jack kicks it.

Nope. Might as well explain it to make sure it's allowed I suppose. Jack is a Wraith, like the Kojiro before her. What's interesting about Wraiths is that they're not supposed to be summoned as Servants, as no Holy Grail is particularly happy about those dirty dirty cheaters who try to game the system. So, what I intend to have happen is to Alaya DM Archer a very specific set of instructions, ones that'll allow Homura to follow in the footsteps of the completely innocent and hard-working Matou Zouken, in that when she either is around Assassin when she is killed or incapacitated that she do the whole summoning speech routine over Assassin's body while adding the name "Hassan-i-Sabah" at the end, as it's the typical "catalyst" to summon a Hassan, in order to summon a True Assassin-equivalent Servant from Assassin's corpse as Zouken did in the Heaven's Feel route of F/SN. It should work as long as Homura has Command Seals already (which she obviously does).

I also find that it'd also fit the narrative of summoning Servants right out of the end of their respective series if you want to summon either Hassan-i-Sabah from F/Z or F/SN if this play is legal and Assassin is offed nearby Homura.

It's a completely legal play, but I have a counterpoint- Why? What do we stand to gain by adding an extra mouth to our party, and one who probably won't be much use against Walpurgisnacht? There's not a whole lot that Hassans 2-19 can do against Wally, and you'd be crazy if you think our luck is good enough to summon the First off of this scheme.

Now, if you wanted to, say, kill off Berserker, then Assassin would be a class of servant that Kirika could easily support without it tearing her apart from the inside.

Go home, Zolgen Makiri, you're drunk.

*looks at the multitude of events that are occurring outside of Walpurgis* Hey, it would really help if she has another set (or possibly multiple sets) of eyes and ears to keep track of everything going on in the city, and possibly being able to shadow people (and a certain white bunny-cat) with the Assassin-class's Presence Concealment skill. We still need to even get to Walpurgis, need I remind you :).

I'll have you know that Zolgen was a man of innovation who worked tirelessly for centuries to see his life's work complete in the form of the Holy Grail; heck, he even made a whole new "better" Lesser Grail all by himself to improve the whole wish-granting process! Worm-man did nothing wrong. /s

EDIT: Also, I've got possible plans for Berserker since Homura's gotten in better relations with at least Oriko. ;)

I'll bet you're against Wakame abuse too. /s

I feel that this is an accurate representation of how I feel right now.
Ah, don't worry about it for now. A brief explanation (kind of):
Zouken/Zolgen = Man whose soul is actually tied to a body made of magical worms for pseudo-immortality. As gross as it sounds. In the original series there existed the Assassin Servant Kojiro Sasaki, basically a samurai with an extremely long Japanese sword who could cut real good. Apparently all Assassin Servants summoned are only supposed to be Hassan-i-Sabahs (think an ancient creed of legendary assassins like in the first Assassin's Creed), but the Caster of that war was a dirty dirty cheater.

Zouken killed Assassin to use his body's effective "Assassin juice/magic container/whatever" to summon the True Assassin from old Assassin's body who was supposed to be summoned that war. All Hassan-i-Sabah look shadowy wrapped in shadowy bandages, so they all look pretty similar aside from the progenitor of the bunch.

What I want Homura to do is to summon a True Assassin from the current "Fake" Assassin's corpse in order to have another Servant under her control. Hassan-i-Sabahs are usually very placid and follow orders very well, and they're the best of the best Assassins in Fate/Type-Moon lore. So yeah. Special Servant ability varies from Hassan-i-Sabah to Hassan-i-Sabah, depending which one Homura would probably randomly get.

EDIT: To clarify, this whole "resummon from corpse" thing can only be done under these specific circumstances; that is, a Assassin that isn't Hassan-i-Sabah was summoned and someone knows how to summon the actual Assassin (which would be a Hassan) that's supposed to be summoned for the war. Can't be done with any other class either, since the makers of the Grail only restricted the Assassin class to something (aka the Hassans). Should also clarify that Zouken is one of the designers of the Holy Grail system, so he would know this "hack" to resummon this particular Servant, and we'd be informing Homura through Archer about this method through being Alaya.

A regular witch wouldn't
  • capture her - well, unless it's the witch's nature, but that's unlikely.
  • get through the bounded field around the Mikuni mansion, assuming Oriko didn't go out to hunt alone... in which case our vote to break off after one witch would be to blame for this situation.
  • be able to beat a MG with precog and considerable firepower.
It's a safe bet to assume that whatever is inside that labyrinth is bad. Assassin, the egg, Oriko's witch, ... we need contingencies.

Is there any weapon that enforces contracts, as opposed to Rule Breaker anulling them? Because we have a geas on Oriko's soul that Oriko Mikuni will help us kill Walpurgisnacht, and her being a witch is a breach of contract, so we might be able to force her to revert?

If it's Assassin, what weapons exorcise wraiths?

Oh, and we might want to use Archer's superior eyesight to check Kirika's soul gem. This situation must be playing hell on her emotions.

Considering how weird certain Witches can be, it's entirely possible that a Witch could be one that traps someone by shutting off it's entrance and waiting for them to die a nature death or something like that. Heck, the very last Witch Oriko and Homura fought was one that lived by keeping Puella Magi attention on them while hiding away in order to get mana from Puella Magi without necessarily needing to kill them. Prepare for the worst, hope for the best and all that.

Oriko could've gone out to hunt down that second Witch to replenish what she'd lost in total the previous day. Also Oriko needs to actively search for a result with her precog for anything to happen (or at least it won't activate automatically unless something big is going to happen like Madoka's potential Witch).

We don't know what's in that Labyrinth, but it's safe to say that it's probably either a regular Witch with a niche or it's Oriko's Witch. Nothing has been stated that this entity within the egg has anything to do with Witches, and if it actually was Assassin then Oriko would probably be dead already (unless Assassin for whatever reason defected from her own familiar and is considering Oriko to be her new mother for some reason).

Geas doesn't stop people from doing anything. It's just that when they do something against the contract their Magic Circuits (or equivalent) burn out. The only "contract" I can think of that would be enforceable in the way you're thinking of is the curse rune script Ath nGabla, which only prevents both warriors from retreating and forces combat between them.

Theoretically, any Servant can be exorcised, since they're all spirits. It would require specialized work by high ranking members of the Church in order to pull off though, and that's only if they can keep said Servant restrained for long enough in order to do it (at which point you're just better off killing the Servant than exorcising it).

Strictly speaking, it would be in her best interest to be adopted by Oriko. After all, what's better than having one mother? Having two mothers, which Jack would have in Oriko and Kirika.
I suppose Reika could come along and be a third mother, if she wanted to.

You know once this is done Homura should go to the Akemiya and relax. What is the Akemiya you ask? Its a Bar where Homura's from all over the Multiverse join together to relax and release there stress. Ask Homura to take you there sometime after this. Should be an interesting place to visit.

Day 21 Chapter 3
[X] Plan Hero of Justice (... just go with it, Archer)

"... That's the plan. Do you have any objections?" Your master doesn't even give you the time to respond with a snarky comment before adding "And no, objections about the mission objective don't count. I want to know if you have any objections to the tactics of the plan."

You do, actually. "First, I don't like the idea of playing babysitter to Kure while she tags along; frankly, I don't even know why she'd be stupid enough to throw herself into what's almost certain to devolve into a combat situation when she's missing both of her legs."

"I tried to talk her out of going, but she insisted on being there. I tried going over her and convincing Lancer, but for the moment she appears to be treating Kure Kirika as a sort of substitute master, and refuses to back down or attempt to change her mind."

Of course she would. Disregarding how disgustingly like them that is, from a strategic position it makes sense for two partners working that closely together to have ensured that their servants will follow the orders of the other in the event of just this situation.
Alright, Archer. So, you know how your Master and her compatriots need Grief Seeds to restore their magic? What's going to happen when they run out? I mean, Grief Seeds come from Witches, who are... 'matured' Puella Magi. And Oriko and Kirika have killed off most, if not all, of the Puella Magi candidates in the city. And your Master and her allies are now actively hunting the Witches down. And good for them for saving lives and all that, but kind of destroying their own ecosystem, there. Once the last Witch goes down, they're on borrowed time. And if that happens before one of the several impending disasters strike, they might not be in any condition to help you on your mission. So yeah, you might want to help them look into alternate ways of restoring their magical power. It's not an urgent problem, but it's probably one you want to start thinking up a solution to before it becomes urgent. Ya, know?
You know what your "Employer" said to you last night - it's probably the smarter long-term move that your master is making now, too - but still, it doesn't sit right with you to leave a man-eating witch just sitting around, where it can munch down on anybody that happens across it. "Second, are you sure it's a good idea to leave the witch where she is once we've extracted Mikuni? I mean, she could still go after other people later on if we leave her be; wouldn't it be better to take her out now?"

"Normally, I'd be all-in on agreeing with you and taking out the witch before it has a chance to be any more of a threat than it already is. But you and Lancer haven't had the chance to learn how to fight together, and you'll both have to be watching over a combat liability. In this situation, it's better to prioritize the safety of the team than it is to worry about the long-term ramifications of leaving the witch alone."

"Right."
As much as leaving the witch alone to focus on extracting Mikuni doesn't sit right with you, you know that your master is feeling the same. She made her call, and it's your job to see it through.

Despite the advantage that her tracking rune has in leading her to the labyrinth, Lancer's crippled tag-along ensures that she arrives at the destination at the same time as you. Kure sits in her wheelchair, having discarded the cute little "casts" made for her by Tomoe and opting for her ruined legs to go au naturale; maybe she thought that they clashed with the edgy, all-black chunnibyou styling of her battle garb.

"I look forward to working alongside you, Archer," Lancer says, offering a bow as you touch down beside her and her temporary master. "I am glad that you have lent your aid in the recovery of my master."

You look past her, downwards in Kure's direction. You may have seen a softer side to her on Sunday, but now she's right back to glaring at everything that isn't Mikuni, yourself included. "Think nothing of it." You honestly hope that they take your advice. You aren't doing this to be nice to them. "Did my master already brief you on the plan?" you ask Kure.

"Yes. We go in, get Oriko, and get out," she replies.

"Good; at least you know what we're in for. But I'll reiterate, we are only focused on Mikuni's extraction. You are in no condition to be in a live combat zone, and once we have Mikuni we'll need to be watching out for her as well, if she's in as bad a shape as all the evidence is pointing towards. Between the two of you, Lancer and I won't have enough eyes to keep you both safe and safely engage the witch in combat."

"And, if we run aground of the worst-case scenario, and it's Mikuni herself who's the witch running the show, we're to pull back and regroup so that we can come up with a prop-" You never get to finish that sentence, as Kure leaps from her wheelchair and throws herself at you, taking you to the ground when as you're caught completely off-guard.

"Don't say that!" she screams in your face, as Lancer scrambles to pick her up off of you. "Don't say that! Oriko can't be gone, she just can't!"

You pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and without skipping a beat say to Kure
[ ] Something harsh
[ ] Something comforting
[ ] Something neutral

Kure looks at you, silent. Then she turns her head away, muttering something to herself under her breath.

As you lead your party across the boundary and into the labyrinth, you find yourself hoping that it won't be Mikuni's witch that you have to fight. That would break Kure, and then your master would be out two allies and their two servants. If Walpurgisnacht is as bad as she says, you know she'll need all the help she can get.

"Well, what do you think?" you ask Kure, gesturing to the landscape woven from colourful yarn, with broken fences and random accoutrements strewn haphazardly about amid a backdrop of a night sky. "You'd know Mikuni better than anyone else; is this her?"

There's palpable relief in Kure's voice when she says "It's not. Thank the gods, it's not."

"Good news, master- The witch we're after is not Mikuni."

"Have you identified the witch?"

"No, but Kure doesn't think that the landscape of the labyrinth would belong to Mikuni. And, I think I'd have to agree with her. Coloured yarn and broken fences just don't strike me as being her."

"Coloured yarn and broken fences... I can't say that's a witch I'd be familiar with. You should be on your guard. If things look like they're going poorly for you, let me know. I'll stop time and head over to provide relief."

"I'll let you know."

[X] Something neutral
[X] Snipe the fences from afar with inexpensive arrows to check if they're familiars.
-[X] If you can hold them in reserve, project an arrow version each of Caladbolg and Hrunting for AoE or precision strikes.
-[X] Our goal is Oriko and Lancer can track her, so let Bryn take the lead.
-[X] If tracking fails, search for the witch; it's the most likely place for Oriko to be.

Something comforting is right out of the gate, and something harsh would only antagonize her without accomplishing anything else. She'll just shrug it off without thinking about it. Being neutral would be our best bet right now.

Also, I don't trust anything in a Labyrinth. I didn't exactly specify since I'm tired, but Archer should be able to avoid mistakes like getting ganked from behind by something.

Edit: Edited in Nacht's expanded vote.

@Nawaf, I fully agree with your vote, but maybe we could expand upon that plan a bit:

Hmm... can we project a Caladbolg and Hrunting arrow each now and hold them in reserve in case we need an AoE or precision strike respectively? I think projections persist for a few hours, but I'm not sure about that time frame.

And Bryn can track Oriko, so we should probably let her take the lead and cover her.

@Nawaf @Nachtigall
... So, I'm just going to point out that if you intend to have Archer hold onto Caladbolg as he uses it as an arrow, Archer would effectively be holding onto a grenade with its pin pulled, so I'm going to veto that. Archer very specifically "breaks" Caladbolg by overloading it with mana in order to get the desired effect (that is a huge implosion at the place of impact), and we can assume that an unbroken Caladbolg wouldn't be capable of releasing its payload and would act more like Fergus' version (aka needing to be activated manually and built up rather than the desired implosion and is more meant for landscape destruction). Hrunting is fair game though, as long as he uses alteration to transform it into an arrow and doesn't boost it's power by breaking it.
EDIT: The fact that any Servant can break any NP at any point makes my point moot.

Which is another reason why I wrote "If you can hold them in reserve". That said, I see no reason why he can't project an unbroken Caladbolg II arrow and overload it before firing, so I'll keep it as part of my vote.
