"... So we were the only ones to not find anything."
Archer looks around the room at the assembled team as he relays word of his unsuccessful party's hunt. "Figures," he says, shaking his head. "Well, that's fine with me. If the rest of you all managed to accomplish something, then that's still a success in my book."
"Indeed," Tomoe-san says. Even with one group having come back empty-handed, that's still four fewer witches roaming the streets that we can show for our efforts."
"We will have to be careful in the coming days," Mikuni Oriko says. "We've been more thorough in eliminating familiars this time around, so once the current crop of witches is gone that will be it, at least for the time being. For now, we might have no more than three successful hunts, from what I can see."
"Just three?" Nagatsuki Miyuki asks. "That... That can't be enough, can it? I... I still don't know if I'm ready. I can't have gotten enough combat practice in..."
"Do any of us know if we've gotten enough practice in to be ready?" Kirika asks. "I mean, besides Homura." She gestures to you, adding "She and Oriko are kind of the only ones that have any of what we're up against." Eyes fall on you and Mikuni Oriko expectantly, and Kirika asks you "So, what do you two think?"
"I don't know," you're forced to say. This timeline has been one surprise after another, and with witches being far stronger than you've ever faced before you find yourself dreading what Walpurgisnacht might have in store for you. "If we keep at it like we have been, then I think we'll be in the best place we can be, given the circumstance."
You look to Mikuni Oriko, hoping she might have some better insight to give you. "I... The future I saw then was black and fraught with destruction," she says, clenching her fingers together tightly. "I would like to say I agree with Akemi-san, that we will be int he best position we can be, but I cannot say whether that is a good position to be in.
Your sigh might as well have been for the entire team in attendance. You know nothing will be good enough to stand against Walpurgisnacht. Just luck, hope, and your willingness to do this over and over again until you get it right. "Shall we talk of more pleasant things, then?" Tomoe-san asks. "Fretting will get us nowhere and accomplish nothing." She turns to you, asking "How should we divide up tonight's haul of Grief Seeds? Some of us have so many, while others-" Tomoe-san's eyes spare a pass on Nagatsuki Miyuki in particular. "-have too few." You know Tomoe-san is probably including herself among that number, all things considered. Inwardly, you shake your head. Despite her seniority, she has a pitifully low store of Grief Seeds to her name, when considering the number that some others on the team have.
"We brought back four Grief Seeds tonight," you say. Those four Seeds sit at the center of the table, and you group them into two groups of two. "If no one else has any objections, then I think we can spare to give two Grief Seeds each to the two of us who have the fewest."
Kyouko scowls at your suggestion; you're guessing she thinks she put in more work tonight than some others, but miraculously she holds her tongue as Tomoe-san and Nagatsuki Miyuki each take their two Seeds. You still haven't figured out how to evenly divide the other Grief Seeds your team has collected this week, nor have you given any thought as to whom the Grief Fruit dropped by Elsa Maria should go.
"I also think we should discuss how to divide up the Seeds we've been collecting that haven't yet found a home," you say. "So far, our team is up six Grief Seeds, as well as the Grief Fruit we got from defeating Elsa Maria. I think now would be a good time to talk about how we should divide those Seeds up as well."
"Well, two of'em aught'a go ta me," Kyouko says, breaking her silence exactly as you expected she might. "I put in a lotta work , a lot more's worth than just fer two, so I think it's only fair that I get at least that. Ya can give the rest ta Four-Eyes, or split it between her and Mami if ya want. I don' care, s'long as I get at least some'a the credit fer my work."
You look to Kyouko. Everyone else also looks to Kyouko. Some look to Kyouko with less acceptance than others. "It's not like you need that many more Seeds, ya know?" Kirika says. "You've got more than either Tomoe or Nagatsuki, so why are you being so uptight about the number of Seeds you get?"
"Like yer one ta talk?" Kyouko says. "You, Big White, and Spooky all got more than me. I'm just saying I want fair compensation fer the work I put in, is all."
You interject before this argument has a chance to take a turn for the worse. "We're getting nowhere bickering like this," you say. "Frankly, it's a silly argument for us to even be having, considering we don't even need to be so concerned about the number of individual Seeds each of us has." you look to Kyouko, and say nothing as you slide two of the six Grief Seeds in her direction. She looks like someone begging for more food when they're in the middle of a full meal, but "If it'll keep the peace," then you're okay with letting her have the two.
"How many Grief Seeds do you and the others have, Nagatsuki-san?"
"Counting the two I just got tonight?" Nagatsuki Miyuki asks in response to Tomoe-san's question. "Uh... Four, I think; for all of us."
Tomoe-san shakes her head, pushing the remaining four Grief Seeds over to Nagatsuki Miyuki as she says "That just won't do at all. Please, Nagatsuki-san, take the rest and make sure you and your friends have enough."
In addition to Tomoe-san's generosity, you're inclined to contribute one of your own as well. "This should be fine as well," you say. "It's not like any of us needs a massive stock of Seeds anymore."
Hesitantly, as though she expects you and Tomoe-san to go back on your word, Nagatsuki Miyuki claims the Grief Seeds as she asks "So, uh, what's this Grief Fruit you mentioend before?"
"It's an oversized Grief Seed that dropped from the witch we fought two weeks ago," you respond. "We have no idea what its limit is as far as the amount of corruption it can hold, and so far we haven't had to test it out." Your eyes dance from Tomoe-san to Mikuni Oriko, and you ask them "Do either of you have an idea as to what we should do with it?"
"We can keep it in communal storage for right now," Mikuni Oriko says. "It should be safe enough. But perhaps, once we've established ourselves with that secret base idea of yours, we could store it there for safekeeping. I'm sure that between Lancer and myself we'd be able to set up adequate defenses around the Grief Fruit so that no one could take it from us if they managed to sneak in."
"Yeah, that should probably work," you say; if it's Mikuni Oriko saying it will work, then you can trust the chance for success. But how silly is it to be making all these optimistic plans for the future, when you don't even know if that future will ever come?
