"What was that for?"
Not wanting to appear an impolite host, you've waited until the end of the evening's practice session and the departure of your friends before paying back Archer. "That's for giving me bad information." Archer stares at you, a look of confusion worn on his face as he rubs his cheek. "Kure Kirika gave me a little
talk over lunch today; seems you misled me when you told me about s... Some adult things." You can't bring yourself to say the word. Kure Kirika could say it with such ease, but every time your mouth attempts to form the word, your brain freezes.
"So why not hit her then?"
"I'm going to, just as soon as I see her again." You let those words hang in the empty living room for a few moments, before wrapping your arms around Archer's waist. "I"m sorry for hitting you."
"I forgive you," Archer says, returning the gesture by wrapping his own arms around you. "Admittedly, I'm not the best at explaining that kind of thing." You allow the hug to linger for a few seconds longer, before you and Archer break, and he says "Now, I'm assuming we've still got business to take care of before the night is over; is that right?"
"Yes. We need to establish who's going to be hosting tonight; we need to get Nagatsuki Miyuki brought up to speed on how things work around here; and we need to have Saber summoned so we can figure out what they can do and how best to use them." You only have two weeks to get Nagatsuki Miyuki brought up to speed. You somehow managed to accomplish the same feat with Mikuni Oriko ad Kure Kirika in the same amount of time; can you do it again now that the number of people helping to accomplish this has been doubled since the last time?
Why kid yourself. No amount of preparation will get your team ready in time for Walpurgisnacht.
You made sure to log Nagatsuki Miyuki's phone number into your group chat, so a simple text is all it takes to establish tonight's base of operations.
<Homura: Who should be the host tonight? I'm willing, unless someone else has a better idea.>
It doesn't take long before you receive your responses.
<Mikuni Oriko: I'd be more than happy to offer my house, since Nagatsuki-san will be joining us.>
<Tomoe-san: I was about to offer mine as well, but considering Nagatsuki-san's, er, house arrest, perhaps your place would be best, Mikuni-san.>
<Kyouko: I dont care, so long as foods free>
<Nagatsuki Miyuki: Yeah, I think Mikuni's would be easier for me to sneak out to. I don't know where anybody else lives, either, so there's that.>
<Homura: Then it's settled. Mikuni Oriko, since you're willing to host, I suppose the rest of us will be seeing you and Kure Kirika soon.>
<Kure Kirika: You know, you can just call me by my first name now, if I'm really gonna be your "big sis" soon.>
<Nagatsuki Miyuki: Come again?>
<Kure Kirika: My mom's got a thing for Akemi's dad; so now she's started calling me her "big sis" like they're already married or something.>
<Kure Kirika: They haven't even gone on one date yet.>
You decide it would be better not to pay any further attention to this conversation. You'll let your phone buzz in your pocket for awhile longer; that's fine. You didn't need for Kure Kirika to tell Nagatsuki Miyuki all about Archer and her mother.
"Something wrong?"
"No, nothing at all," you say. "We'll be meeting at Mikuni Oriko's place tonight, so we should get moving soon."
"Right. You planning on taking this stuff with you-" Archer gestures to the photocopies of some of Tohsaka Rin's study material you had him make earlier in the evening. One set left with Sayaka, another set stays with you, and you have just enough copies left over for Tomoe-san and Mikuni Oriko to take a look at. Assuming they share their copies with their houseguests, that leaves enough material for everyone; and if anyone should happen to lose their copy, you can always ask Hitomi to make another, now that she has the relevant book in her possession. "Or do you want to leave it here?"
"I'll take them with me," you say, stuffing the photocopies into your shield. "Maybe I'll be able to introduce the idea of using our runes to make Mystic Codes to the others as long as we're all together."
You had forgotten how awkward first meetings with new teammates could be.
Potential teammates, you remind yourself; nothing has been settled yet about allowing Nagatsuki Miyuki a permanent spot on the team. "So..." Nagatsuki Miyuki is the first one to speak up. "I hate to nag, but I hope I didn't sneak out here for nothing."
"Not at all, Nagatsuki-san," Mikuni Oriko says. Ever the gracious host, she chooses this moment to have Lancer bring in tea and snacks. "Thank you, Lancer."
Nagatsuki Miyuki's eyes follow Mikuni Oriko's servant as she departs from the living room, and she asks "That was your, uh, servant, right? What's it like?"
"I imagine it would be a lot less pleasant if the situation in Mitakihara were more like the traditional Grail War which Archer and Rider have described to us." Mikuni Oriko takes a sip of her tea, as beside her Kure Kirika stirs in her usual copious amounts of sugar and jam. "However, with things as they are now, having Lancer around is quite pleasant. She's been a wonderful teacher and a pleasure to be around. I'm sure whichever servant you summon as your Saber servant will be the same."
"Hold on there," you say to Mikuni Oriko. "Before we more forward with inducting Nagatsuki Miyuki into the team, I need to make sure she knows what she's getting herself into."
"Your dad already told me about how this whole servant thing works," Nagatsuki Miyuki says, stirring her tea over and over, yet never once taking a sip. "He made sure I knew all about how this thing works before he let me make my decision."
"My father is not the one who calls the shots when it comes to our team. I need to make sure you're committed to our cause, not just to summoning your servant." You hope this will be the last time you have to tell someone about the coming storm; but you know that it won't be. "There is... A storm coming, in two weeks' time. An incredibly powerful witch will make landfall on the first of May. It's mere arrival will bring destruction, and beyond that..."
Nagatsuki Miyuki is held firmly in her seat by your words, as you recount for her what you know about
Walpurgisnacht; what it can do, when it will arrive, and "I cannot stress enough how important it will be for our team to be working in complete unison for this. Fighting Elsa Maria was difficult enough with all available hands on deck; I can't imagine what
Walpurgisnacht will be like." Mikuni Oriko's living room is silent; it's almost as though no one is in the room outside of you and Nagatsuki Miyuki. You stare into her eyes, and say to her "I need to know that you and Saber will give one-hundred per cent to our cause, to protecting this and the surrounding cities when the time comes. If you can, if you and Saber can learn to work with the rest of us in the time we have left, then you can join our team."
"If you can't, I'll understand completely ; but I'll also have to find someone else who can to be the master of Saber. Do you understand?"
Solemnly, Nagatsuki Miyuki nods her head. "I made the mistake of signing my life away to the Incubator," she says, her hands shaking as they struggle to retain their grasp on her tea cup. "I'll admit, what you've just told me is... Terrifying, beyond anything I can possibly imagine. I'd rather go through hearing my parents yell at me about my drinking a hundred times over than face this, this
Walpurgisnacht of yours." She can't look you in the eye. She can't look anyone in the eye. All she can do is stare into her tea.
Her prospects aren't looking good; you think you'll have to find someone else. "But... I imagine all of you are thinking the same thing, right?"
"I'll do it. I... I'm the only one of my friends who can, so I guess I don't really have a choice in the matter." Then, for just a moment, you think you see what could generously be described as a smile form on Nagatsuki Miyuki's lips, and she says "That, and this'll give me something to take my mind off of how much I'd really like to be drinking."
"Then let me be the first to welcome you into the
Puella Magi Holy Quintet," you say, offering a hand to Nagatsuki Miyuki. A quick glance around the room, and a quick heacount, causes you to rethink your position, and you hastily correct yourself. "Though I suppose 'sextet' would be more accurate now."
Immediately, you realise what you've just said, and your cheeks go scarlet as Kure Kirika's words and Assassin's
images flood your mind. You sputter; and Mikuni Oriko asks you "Akemi-san, what's wrong?"
Beside her, her lover smirks, and Kure Kirika says "Maybe some tea went down the wrong tube. Or maybe she's thinking of things she shouldn't be thinking about; isn't that right,
little sis?"
Tomoe-san shoots Kure Kirika a disapproving silent glare; Kyouko just laughs at the whole affair, no doubt having caught on to the meaning behind Kure Kirika's insinuation; Mikuni Oriko just continues to stare in confusion, saying "I don't understand. Dearest, did I miss something? Did something happen between you and Akemi-san at school today?"
"Are you sure you don't want a catalyst?" you ask Nagatsuki Miyuki, as MIkuni Oriko leads the six of you down to the basement. "I'm sure my father would be willing to provide you with one related to any hero you'd like to call on." Swords are, after all, Archer's specialty.
Apparently, the Archer class isn't really made up of Archers after all, if they're more proficient with swords than they are with bows and arrows.
"I don't even know who I'd want," Nagatsuki Miyuki replies. "Or even if I know anybody who'd qualify. Miyamoto Musashi, maybe? But then, how would your dad even know which sword was the right one? Maybe he'd just give me an oar and hope it was good enough; I don't know. And how would he even get it in the first place, let alone get it to me as quickly as you're all moving me along?" Nagatsuki Miyuki shakes her head, and before you can tell her that your father has his ways, she says "I'd rather just take my chances; besides, did any of you have to use a catalyst, or did you also just go in blind?"
The answer from all of your teammates is unanimous; when they summoned their servant, they all went in blind. Only you, using the body of the false Assassin to summon the True one, used anything resembling a catalyst in the summoning ritual. "We all went in blind," Mikuni Oriko says. "So I suppose there's no harm in letting you go in blind as well."
"Catalysts are mostly useful if you've got a specific servant in mind; but since you don't, there's no harm in summoning without one. Your servant will be assigned based on compatibility." You aren't exactly sure about the truthfulness of that point. Kure Kirika summoned Berserker blind, yet until recently he was the cause of constant pain for her.
Granted, that had everything to do with which servant was most compatible with her, and nothing to do with the summoning itself.
"Just repeat after me," Mikuni Oriko says, guiding Nagatsuki Miyuki into position over the summoning circle drawn into the basement floor in thick white chalk. "And everything will go just smoothly."
"Will it... Will it hurt?"
"It will feel... Strange, like your whole body is being filled and emptied at the same time, but it won't hurt."
Nagatsuki Miyuki nods, holding out her hand as Mikuni Oriko instructs her, guiding her through the summoning incantation.
"Fill; fill; fill; fill; fill. Repeat five times, but when each is filled, destroy it."
"Heed my words; my will creates your body, and your sword creates my destiny. If you heed the Grail's call, and obey my will and reason, then answer my summoning!"
"I hereby swear that I shall be all the good in the world. That I shall defeat all evil in the world."
The scarlet rash on the back of Nagatsuki Miyuki's hand fades as she recites the incantation, and in its place are burned three crimson sigils in the shape of a rose in full bloom; her Command Seals.
"Seventh heaven clad in the great words of power, come forth from the circle of binding, guardian of scales!"
It's the same as when you summoned True Assassin;
a blinding flash of light invades your every sense as Nagatsuki Miyuki fulfills the summoning incantation.
The light from the summoning ritual fades, revealing the form of the seventh servant. Saber is a woman of average height and distinctly above-average build, rivalling Tomoe-san or Mikuni Oriko in
certain places. Her face is familiarly Japanese, a welcome change of pace from the many foreign servants filling your team's roster, and her eyes are a pale blue colour. Her hair, long and coloured a pale pink, is tied into a bun and held in place by an oversized hairpin in the shape of a handguard of a katana, save for a single long bang which falls down and over her right shoulder. Her clothes are ancient, elegant, a beautiful mix of rich violet and the crimson of autumn leaves, with her black-brown arm and leg guards covered in more violet and crimson. Completing her attire is an
obi of crimson and decorated with cherry blossoms, around which hangs a belt holding the scabbards of many katanas.
"Servant Saber, at your service," she says to Nagatsuki Miyuki, in a voice brimming with enthusiasm. "Make my stay a fun one, master!"
